[RCSE] F3J in the Rockies - Pilots please read

2005-05-20 Thread Howard Mark
We will be flying on the EAST FIELD -- 1/2MILE EAST OF TOWER RD ON 120TH AVE.
See http://www.rmsadenver.com/ for directions.
The pilot's meeting will be at 8:30 AM. As most of you know, I am disinclined
to reward tardiness.
Please sign the AMA waiver forms and be paid up before the pilot's meeting. You
should have your planes assembled as well; so as to be able to set up lines and
fly immediately following the meeting.
The pilot's meeting will be brief as the rules are very straightforward:

Full rules F3J - 4 man team protection - carryover of prelim scores to the
finals.
Top 10 to the finals - Get your own support for the finals!
One throw out for the prelims - assuming 6 or more rounds are flown.
One throw out for the fly-offs assuming 4 or more rounds are flown.

Once the contest is underway, we will start the 5 min prep time for a group
immediately after the previous working time ends. We should be able to complete
a full round in about one hour. We will TRY for 8 ten minute rounds Saturday
and 3 ten minute rounds Sunday before the 15 minute flyoff rounds begin about
noon.

SATURDAY
19-10
210-11
311-12
412-1
51-2
62-3
73-4
84-5

Sunday
19-10
210-11
311-12

Flyoff rounds continue until 4pm (last start).

Wow I'm shocked - Gordy's coming to F3J in the Rockies! Looks like he's teamed

BTW - The party is Saturday night at my house - and Gordy can come if he
promises to behave himself and not drink all the tequila.
If ya come ya gotta wear Hawaiian - cause it's my going away bash too.

RE: [RCSE] Ultimate soaring car? (extreme VAN)

2005-05-11 Thread Howard Mark
If you are interested in a rig to take to soaring contests, I'm selling MONGO
the van and my 21' travel trailer.
MONGO is a 1999 Ford E350 Chateau van with a 7.3L TD engine (85K mi) and will
carry a boatload of stuff AND seven passengers in comfort + gets great mileage
for a BIG van. MONGO can tow 10K lbs too. The trailer (Hotel Howard) is a 2001
StarLite - sleeps 5 and is in great shape as well.
MONGO goes for $11,500, the trailer $9,500. I'd make a deal on the pair.

Thanks for the bandwidth!

Question:
With two GPS coordinates, is there a simple formula or converter to
calculate the distance in miles between those two GPS points.

For instance: One GPS coordinate is in Chicago; and a second is in Northern
Canada; what is the distance (mileage) between these two points?

I came up dry searching Google!

Ben,

You are so right. My 4.0L Grand would get 21MPG average overall - better than
most Subaru's.
Here in Denver, you can get an '05 for about $21K.
However, sadly I just traded my '01 for a new Mustang convertible. Terrible
soaring car. GREAT beach car.
I see a nice beach and a margarita in my future :)

Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.7L. Fits every criteria. Can be had for
$26k. I like the big engine version, but mileage goes to crap and cost
can go as high as $38. I can fit 1/4 scale tow plane, two 5M gliders,
two 3M gliders, winch, two batteries and all the other stuff needed.
Still have one seat free for a pax and can hit any forest service road
without concern.

[RCSE] WTB - electric motor...

2005-03-29 Thread Howard Mark
I have a Reichard XL-3200 in need of a power source.
Anyone have a motor/gearbox/ESC/prop. appropriate for this beast (130 or
so) at a reasonable price?
Of course I'd like a brushless setup that will take it to 1000' in 3 sec on 7
cells :) BUT this is just for lazy thermalling so anything that'll get it up is
OK.
For a different plane -- I could use an ESC for a geared speed 600 can motor
(35-50 AMP) as well.
Please reply direct.

it sits gathering dust while we fly our club contests with Icons, Sharons and a
myriad of aircraft; each one infinitely better in performance and fun than any

being manufactured -ata timewhen there is a long waiting list

2M will die eventually; for the same

Once again the powers that be have forced the many to to their will by sticking

RE: [RCSE] High Altitude Glider

2005-01-17 Thread Howard Mark
Jim,

The 400 foot limit within 3 miles of an airport thing is an AMA safety rule;
it has nothing to do with FAA airspace. So are the no autonomous flight and
maintain unenhanced visual contact rules. The AMA rules used to correspond
exectly to the published FAA guidelines for model aircraft operations. I don't
know if they still do.

Most of us that fly anywhere remotely near urban areas fly in controlled
airspace (see below). The only reason that we are not violating FAA regulations
is that the FAA HAS NO REGULATIONS regarding operation of model aircraft. The
FAA doesn't even have a good definition of what a model aircraft is! The FAI
does. Essentially if your model weighs less than 5 Kg. (FAI limit), then you
have a pretty good argument for it being a model (unless you use it
commercially). Depending on who you talk to at the FAA and what you're using
your model for, they will probably say it's a UAV if you're going to take it
very high - certainly if you're wanting to venture into class A airspace!

Because model gliders routinely operate at a thousand feet or higher within
controlled airspace, I firmly believe that the FAA should take control of model
aircraft regulations. If nothing else, the FAA should provide guidelines and
assistance (NOTAMS...) for high altitude model operations around established
AMA facilities, XC operations, and record attempts. At the moment, it is
impossible to work with those guys as they have no established procedures.
Right now, the AMA has a head in the sand attitude and will take no action to
coordinate with the FAA.

**
All US airspace is classified as A,B,C,D or E - or uncontrolled.

Class A is above 18K feet in the continental US.
Class B is airspace from the surface to 10,000 feet MSL surrounding the
nation's busiest airports.
Class C airspace extends from the surface to 4,000 feet above the airport
elevation (charted in MSL) surrounding those airports that have an operational
control tower, are serviced by a radar approach control, and that have a
certain number of IFR operations or passenger enplanements.
Class D airspace extends from the surface to 2,500 feet above the airport
elevation (charted in MSL) surrounding those airports that have an operational
control tower.
Generally, if the airspace is not Class A, Class B, Class C, or Class D, and it
is controlled airspace, it is Class E airspace.
Except for 18,000 feet MSL, Class E airspace has no defined vertical limit but
rather it extends upward from either the surface or a designated altitude to
the overlying or adjacent controlled airspace. There are Class E airspace areas
beginning at either 700 or 1,200 feet AGL used to transition to/from the
terminal or en route environment.

Jim,

I've seen this site before. Projects like this are the reason that the
FAA wants to regulate UAVs (and RC aircraft) flying under autopilot or
video downlink. This case is specifically mentioned when they talk
about having to control any aircraft in their airspace. It doesn't
apply to RC until you get above 400', then you're in their space again.
They also regularly use the example of a full scale helicopter flying
under an RC trainer with a video downlink under it. The helicopter
never saw the RC plane as it passed ~100' below it. Unfortunately this
kind of story constantly pops up on the internet giving the feds more
ammunition to make stricter regs with.

Luckily the FAA isn't that concerned with typical RC flying, only with
vision enhanced systems or autonomous systems.

Happy flying,

Jim

Ben,

In any event, if you are not a FAA licensed pilot or an airplane owner the FAA
has no means of enforcing anything against you.

FAR's are federal law. They apply to all individuals - pilots or not. Violation
of regulations may subject you to severe penalties - including fines and jail
time.
The AC encourages voluntary compliance. Violations have no legal
ramifications.

It does have some legal power as it show the intent of the FAA.
Judges can use these when interpreting FARs. Still, there is no FAR

RE: [RCSE] High Altitude Glider

2005-01-17 Thread Howard Mark

Question:
How would the average modeler ever know about a given local FAR, NOTAM,
etc? law or not it is not likely we would be aware of said regulation.

John,
I think the answer is to educate the full-scale folks about the
capabilities of model aircraft and establish procedures for model aircraft
operations in special modes such as XC, and altitude record attempts. The AMA
cannot do this. It takes the FAA. The FAA should mark sectional charts with
model glider field locations - just as they do for full-scale gliders. They
should issue NOTAMS for events like the NATS - not only for XC; but for any
event where there is a possibility of collision. The average modeler is not
flying at 3000 feet. Those that want to should be required to know and follow
safety rules -- and full-scale aircraft flying in the vicinity have a right to
know that model aircraft are operating there.

Right now we all have to follow your suggestion - Fly with reasonable care,
and know your location. But ask yourself if flying a model glider in an
airport traffic pattern really makes sense? You are right -- if we ask the FAA
if it's OK to fly at 3000 ft - they will say NO! That's because they don't
understand models and are not responsible for their operations. If they were
responsible, then they would be forced to implement solutions to these issues
instead of passing the buck. The situation now is a disaster waiting to happen.

Ben,
This should answer your question concerning FAA penalties for FAR violations:
http://www.agl.faa.gov/publicaffairs/HowWork/Civil.doc
As I said, penalties for violating FAR's can be levied on anyone - not just
pilots.
FAA regulation violations carry no criminal penalty per se. However many
infractions are covered by other federal and state laws. Violations such as
interfering with a crew member and flying while intoxicated are examples.

Can you please then tell us what penalty the FAA may enforce upon a
non-pilot, non-aircraft owner for a violation of an FAR? Please site
the relevant statutes. Please also compare the administrative process
the FAA uses for enforcement actions with federal criminal proceedings
which may result in fines and imprisonment.

AC's are often sited in judicial proceedings (usually against pilots).
While they aren't regulatory in nature, they support the FAA's
intentions. As a pilot, if you dare to violate an AC you risk facing
the wrath of some creative FAA inspector armed with his book of woe.

Hey Team!

Here in Minneapolis, we missed The Big One. Unlike Muncie, the ground is
barely covered with white stuff. However, the temps are minus -10 to -15
below zero. Hi (daytime) temp may hit +2.

Just thought I would mention a tradition which our club conducts each
January. We schedule a Freeze Fly on New Years Day. A dozen hardy souls
head out on the surface of a frozen lake; launch a few sailplanes with a
hi-starts, hand launch and electric park flyers, just to say we did it;
drink hot chocolate (I think it's hot chocolate in those thermos
bottles!); and head back to where it's warm and welcoming.

Any other interesting winter Soaring Club Traditions to share?

Merry Christmas to all!

[RCSE] Pager? Interference

2004-10-22 Thread Howard Mark
At one field I fly at often, we've had problems with interference since the facility
was opened 3 years ago.
JR receivers seem to have the biggest issues. I believe the early 700's (could be
600's) were worst. I've heard JR has updated the receiver to fix the issues. I mention
JR only as information and NOT as a slam. Many of the guys that had problems with JR
gear have replaced the receivers with RCD and have had no more big issues.
A couple of weeks ago I (ch32) was aerotowing a friend's (Jon) sailplane. He got hit
shortly after takeoff (ch44) and also just before landing - causing him to damage a
beautiful sailplane. Jon was flying Airtronics gear (Stylus) PPM. Just a few minutes
later a pilot flying a 1/3 scale 3D plane with JR PCM reported that he'd had a lot of
hits. Turns out he didn't know if the interference was caused by his ignition,
setup Or if it was coming from some other source. I witnessed several uneventful
flights so I figured it was safe to fly. I fired up my trusty Skybolt and wrung it out
for a few minutes. I thought I had a minor hit once - just before the thing dove
straight into the ground - full throttle - from about 200 feet. The model exploded and
was a total write-off. I've flown this model at the same facility dozens of times
before without a problem. I used an Airtronics 660 / RCD 535 in the Skybolt. Of course
a frequency scanner showed that my frequency was clean AFTER the wreck.

Club members have tried in vain to find the source of the interference. I had not had
many problems before I lost the Skybolt - a few glitches that last a second or so -
and those are rare. But once Bob Vixie came out to fly there and his Tiger II went
wacko on approach. It dove straight at the ground rolling - full throttle, pulled out
inverted at about 3 feet and rolled back upright and cut the throttle - all on it's
own before giving control back to Bob. Bob was so shaken that he shoved the radio at
me and said Here - YOU land it!. Bob had the susceptible gear in his plane.

Now to my question. Is it possible that this is pager interference? I've downloaded
the coordinates of pager antennas from the FCC and plotted them. Connecting the dots
by company reveals three possible sources. Of course I don't know if these are pager
repeaters or not. Is it POSSIBLE that our field is in the path of a high-powered pager
repeater - and that this could be the source of our interference? Our field is on the
high plains just east of the foothills near Denver. The pager antennas are located in
the foothills above - and in the plains to the east below. A hi-gain antenna (yagi...)
will still probably have a beam width wide enough to cause a problem for anything
close to the centerline of it's path. I've read that repeaters can use 300W of power!

Any info that anyone can supply would be appreciated!!! - but please facts and NOT
just opinions.

Mark

RE: [RCSE] Security issues and R/C models-keep politics off the exchange

2004-10-21 Thread Howard Mark
Kevin,

WHAT work with the FAA has Dave Brown done? In his August article - (which should be
required reading for ALL soaring enthusiasts) he tells of his trip to the FAA; a
meeting in which he said he was shocked to discover that pilots regularly flew models
higher than 400 feet! Reminds me of Captain Renault from Cassablanca:

Rick : How can you close me up? On what grounds?
Captain Renault : I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!
[a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]
Croupier : Your winnings, sir.
Captain Renault : [sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much.

Dave Brown participated in a record autonomous flight - then prohibited autonomous
flight with an AMA safety rule!
He has intervened to prevent new world records by at least 2 pilots I know by refusing
to sanction flights into class A airspace or refusing record applications.
He has NOT worked with the FAA in this area and he has left it up to the pilots to
fight HIS fight with the FAA while he waits on the sidelines (sound familiar).

We deserve better.

While I agree with Barry's premise that partisan politics (while at the same time
sheepishly admitting to contributing to it in the past) are best discussed elsewhere,
it would be foolish of us to ignore the effect of lobbying efforts in our represented
republic.

All three of the AMA presidential candidates mention working with various governmental
organizations in their election statements. While Dave Brown's work with the FAA is
important I think that all three of them might be neglecting the source of some of the
more recent temporary flight restrictions (another debate in itself), that being
Homeland Security. Large companies, organizations and other groups all hire lobbyists
to ensure their interests are fairly represented in Washington (yet another
discussion, money in politics).

I think the AMA needs to not only continue the efforts they have made recently with
the FAA and others, they also need to expand it to keep us out of the limelight and
keep those who might be crafting legislation educated about our activities. I think
this effort is truly non-partisan since it effects us all.

This is just a curiosity question since I don't know much about the AMA at the
president and AVP level (the executive counsil): Do the SIG presidents, TK and Jack
before him, have much input in the AMA? My guess is they don't since they aren't
included in the EC.

One last item since I don't post much, did I miss the annual PETA v. KoB
(Killers-of-Bambie) thread with obligatory soaring content of course?

Soaring should be a safe haven from politics.

We can't ignore politics because unfortunately it won't ignore us. I'd
wholehartedly agree that bringing in the NRA with all the baggage that
entails isn't at all constructive but at the other extreme just pretending
that government is going to look out for us -- or even care that we exist --
just isn't realistic.

This whole thread started because it appeared that someone out there -- some
mid to lower level official, not an elected politician -- decided that R/C
aircraft presented a sufficient threat to the well being of important
people that they could be disabled at will. Since we are now in a
security-oriented culture nobody will tell us what they're doing or why so
we don't even know for sure that this is happening and if it is under what
policies it was applied -- we don't even know who to ask and we're unlikely
to get answer sif we did. There are politics involved because politics sets
the agenda, the cultural environment, and its the only way we're going to
have any kind of input into this process.

RE: [RCSE] The SHORTENED Runway

2004-10-01 Thread Howard Mark
Jim,

When I was about 15, I read Flying Forts by Martin Caidin. I was truly impressed by
the punishment that the plane could endure and still bring her crews back.
Two stories from that book stick out in my mind. One is about an English gentleman
that witnessed a B-17 land in an open field - away from any air bases. The plane
rolled to a stop. When the Englishman approached to greet the crew, there was no one
on board.
The second is about a B-17 that was cut virtually in half by an Me-109. It managed to
fly back to base where it landed safely, then broke in two. You can see pictures of
the plane and other incredible stuff at:
http://www.daveswarbirds.com/b-17/fuselag2.htm
I found an old copy of Flying Forts recently and I scarfed it up.

War stories:

My father related this incident about a takeoff in a fully loaded B-17 about
to embark on mission forty-something over Europe. He was lead in the second
group to take off and was well into the takeoff roll when a gas truck,
apparently thinking either everyone had left or that he had sufficient time,
started to cross the active runway. Things were definitely not looking good
when my father jammed full down elevator, compressed the gear, hauled back
on the yoke and literally bounced over the gas truck. They left the
tailwheel somewhere behind them on the runway after it hit the gas truck.
The brief contact with the gas truck and the subsequent touchdown did enough
damage to the tail cone that they did not make that mission.

My father also had DFC, but I have no idea what it was for as he rarely
talked about his actual combat experiences.

He did, however, rather enjoy relating the fun stories. One of which was
that occasionally they could find an excuse for a check flight. After
fueling, they'd load up with the fixin's for ice cream, climb high enough to
freeze the mix, make the ice cream and then quickly land and share with the
other flight and maintenance crews. I think these were the things that
provided the comic relief that enabled them to cope with what they
experienced over Europe.

Rudy,

Thanks! It is truely amazing that Bob (and many observers -- including our CD witness Bob Lewan) could easily see the plane at close to eight thousand feet!
It was a rare Rocky Mountain day with very low humidity; and we had some cumies to provide contrast. We have had the plane to four thousand feet many times - and on most days it's pretty hard to see! This time everything came together and worked flawlessly.

Rudy,

This was pure thermal. The Boulder flying field is located on the high plains a few miles from where the wave begins in the foothills. The wind was only about 3 to 5 mph - even at altitude -- so no wave. No lenticular clouds in sight at all! Maybe in the future?

Guys: Was this a thermal flight or moutain wave?
Back in 1995, my brother and I spent an afternoon
watching glider ops at the Boulder airport. Many
pilots told us about the mountain wave.

We were there to fly in the Great Cross Country Air
Race from Jeffco to Oshkosh. We won the twin engine
class in my bro's Aerostar at 303 mph, which was also
sanctioned as a point-to-point record.

Great flying! Rudy

RE: [RCSE] Looking For Digital Camera

2004-06-16 Thread Howard Mark
EVERY non-slr digital has noticable shutter lag.
This is because of several reasons:

The CCD has to be cleared for the shot.
Autoexposure / autofocus chores performed..

Most cameras allow you to press the shutter halfway to focus and set exposure --- that
helps.
Panning with the action helps too.

BUT if you want the shortest delay get a SLR.

BTW you lose the LCD preview with a SLR - it's just used for playback.

For photographing Soaring action, I would make #1 the shot speed. Some
digital cameras have a noticable delay from when you press the button
to when it takes the picture.

So when Gordy is DSing the rotor on a parked minivan- You might miss
the shot where it goes through the windshield.

I have an older Sony digital camera and the delay is annoying when
taking picures of my boys - by the time the shutter clicks, they have
run off.

If you find one that is quick on the click, let me know. The boys will
wonder when they grow up why I only have pictures of the back of their
heads.

RE: [RCSE] F3J Juniors Snubbed?

2003-09-02 Thread Howard Mark

David,

Please get your facts straight.
RMSA collected NO fees and made not one thin
dime on this event.
We do these things because we love soaring,
not for money.
If it were up to me, we'd let the juniors
fly for free.
If you have a beef about fees - you'd best
take that matter up with the AMA.

Everyone did do a great job. My post
did thank them and was not meant to insult them or their effort, especially
Phil Renaud (who was on the spot to make the hard decision ). It was to
meant to point out the lack of flight time for their investment.
Many pilots and helpers really made an extraeffort to take the juniors
under their wing, to teach them for the future, as well as help them perform
better now. Thank you.Experienced pilotsdo this
most of the time, but even more so at this event, as it is
  labor-intensive.

I looked, but didn't see any guidelines
posted for how often a junior flies. In the bid for the F3J worlds, it
statesthe fees are half for junior ($125) as for those of seniors ($250)
and tower/helper fees are also halved for juniors, so I can see that it would
be fair that they fly less as well. But...the AMA and RMSA made no
discounts to juniors for this contest.

I think (read that as MY OPINION) that if
they are paying as much, they should get equal time. If not, it should

David,
It was very unfortunate that the weather did
not cooperate at the F3J Finals. I believe that Phil Renaud and the Rocky
Mountain group did a great job under the extreme pressure they were under to
get this contest completed. It is natural for a competitor to want
toget as many chances to fly as possible. It is always tough in an
abbreviated contest, especially if you are sitting on 2 throw-out scores in
a 1 throw-out contest. I don't believe that the Juniors were slighted, all
had equal chances to score, and hopefully they enjoyed their competition and
gained valuable experience. I agree that it would have been desirable for
the juniors to have the same number of flights as the seniors. Even at
the World Champs the Juniors will fly fewer roundsthan the Senior
pilots. It is also desirable for the juniors to have their finals at the
same site and time as the open contest so that they can gainexperience
and learn the sport.
We are lucky to have generous people willing
to give up their Labor Day weekend to make this contest possible. Thanks a
million to the crew that pulled this one off, you did a great job. Regards

[RCSE] Team Selection F3J - BRING DEET!

2003-08-27 Thread Howard Mark
You may have heard that Colorado is suffering from the West Nile virus.
We've had over 750 cases this year - most in the last month. This is a
serious problem as the virus is known to exist in the area that we'll be
flying. Sod farms are breeding grounds for mosquitoes - so I'd suggest that
every contestant bring and use mosquito repellent. Any repellent with DEET
will work (Off, Cutter).

It has filaments through it. Not as strong as filament tape, but thicker and

RE: [RCSE] Transmitter pack - Walmart 1850 mAh AA cells

2003-02-21 Thread Howard Mark
Andrew,

If you follow the digital camera forums, you'll see these mentioned all the
time (1600+Mah NiMh batteries).
I have read that there are some in the 1800Mah range that are pretty
reasonably priced, and can be had with a 1 hr charger. I would guess that
those can be fast charged no problem. I've been fast charging NiMh batteries
since I've been using them without adverse effect - except perhaps a bit
diminished life. The 1600 cells work great in a digital camera - which has
about the same current draw as a transmitter (perhaps a bit more). I'd not
hesitate to try a 2C (or more) charge on these, at lease for a short time,
dropping to 1C or less to finish the job. I'm curious as to why you say they
royally suck at this charge rate? Is this just a problem with the Energizer
brand?

Has anyone tried to use the Walmart Energizer AA size 1850 mAh
Ni-MH cells in a transmitter pack?

From the data I've been able to gather on these, they are
limited to C max (they seem to be rated to 2C but royally
suck at that). My 8103 takes about 250 mA, so they should
be just fine. Not good for airborne packs though.

If someone has found contrary data, please share!

RE: [RCSE] Hitec 225 strikes again I WAS LUCKY

2003-02-18 Thread Howard Mark
I've used HiTech servos for years in lots of airplanes - both powered and
sailplanes. I've never had a systemic failure of HS225 or HS85 servos. I
would not consider them inferior to a comparable JR or airtronics servo.
I did replace two HS85's in an Escape once when I blew out both aileron
servo gears in a super hard F3J launch! I replaced them with JR368's (thanks
Mike!) and never had a problem again. I should not have had the HS85's in
there to begin with - the problem was caused by flutter of the surface - any
plastic geared servo would have failed. I have HS85's in my Zenith as it
does not get launched nearly as hard. The only problem I've had with the
Zenith is stripping the Airtronics 141 flap servo gears. The flap servos are
old, but they were free. I had to smile reading Gordy's post on smokin'
motors. The last flap servo I fixed had a lot of crap in the servo and the
motor. Yes - I cleaned it up rather than replace the servo (even pulled the
motor apart and cleaned the commutator!). It did last thru the SWC. I'll
replace the 141's with HS85MG's or HS225MG's and not think twice.

OH BTW - I think the SWC finish/opinion/authority metric is GREAT!
I finished 11th at the SWC, so that makes my opinion very near the top :-)
Maybe if I had better servos, I could beat Fred (Sage)!
Now if the other Fred is listening, I'm ready to sign that big sponsorship
deal.

No new experimental aircraft? You would hear the hue and cry from

Be cautious about dismissing this issue out of hand. I'd encourage you to
go back to the August 2002 issue of Model Aviation and read Dave Brown's
and Bob Hunt's columns. They both talk about the potential for further
government regulation of model aviation arising out of 9-11 related
concerns about the misuse of model technology. Especially autopilot or
autonomous control systems.

While I have no special knowledge or insight about what may be happening,
what Mark has related is entirely within the realm of possibility.

Regarding soaring and AMA our greater number of entries in most of the
recent NATS has not really acknowledged by AMA. RC pattern and Pylon seem to
be the sweetheart events. Possibly because they spend a lot more money with
the advertisers in Model Aviation.

We have always had to do most of the work in our events--even before LSF
took over. In defense of Model Aviation and Bob Hunt and control line I have
a couple of comments. Unlike soaring where we all fly multiple events the
control line events are radically different from one to another and most
control line flyers fly only their specific event. Generally speed flyers
only fly speed (and the several classes within it), precision acrobatic
flyers only fly PA (and the three major classes within it), etc. Therefore
coverage is given to each cl discipline. Soaring has always been soaring,
that's it, even though we fly different classes and events. Free flight and
indoor and treated the same as we are.

Remember that LSF is a special interest group and AMA is a political
organization. Since I joined AMA in 1955 there have always been complaints
about some aspect of the organization but all modelers are much better off
with AMA than without it and we should support it and change it from within
if necessary.

RE: [RCSE] Help - 2A2FER(V-tail) Infinity 660

2002-10-17 Thread Howard Mark
Been there - done that.

NO - you CAN'T program it for flaps on 2 channels - read the manual!
What you can do is get a servo reverser for the other flap and a
Y-connector.

Another thing you can't do -

Have BOTH launch flaps and landing without using an alternate model and now
HALF of your model memory for 2 of 4 models!

To get launch flaps the BEST solution is to go ahead and use another model
and set the flaps on that model in the launch position.
Use the ALT MODEL switch to select that model for launch.
When out of launch mode (ALT MODEL) the flaps are operated off the throttle

I can't find a way to activate the second flap! I can gang them together on
the same channel but then I have to mount one of them asymmetrically (i.e.
facing the same way). I really don't want to hack an larger hole in the
wing to do this. Come on guys, somebody must have figured this out.

RE: [RCSE] The Bozo method to Straighten Fusion Fuse

2002-08-29 Thread Howard Mark

Of course- this self repair was a result of the Coreolis effect. Good
thing Bozo lives in the northern hemisphere. Had he done this in, say
Australia - the problem would have been exacerbated :-)

The ASPIRE 2M is a great wood ARF. Light, well made and looks great.

THis is an oversimplification, unless you are comparing a Spirit to a
foamie. A good wood trainer is much easier to fly than a foamie because
it is much slower..

RE: [RCSE] I'm afraid of my sailplane

Yea - sounds familiar.
Check the longitudinal balance.
The left wing might be heavy. It doesn't take much to cause this problem.

I believe I have bit off more than I can chew by
investing in the fun that comes with a full house
glider. I've got a Condor (NSP variety, not MPX or
Slegers) that I thought I was ready to histart.
Set initial CG per Sal (43% back from LE)
A hand launch of this seemed sufficiently stable.
Towhook is 1/8 in front of that.
No launch presets. Controls all neutral.
First launch veered left and popped off about
30 feet up, going fast. Managed to pull out before a
stall and fly the pattern. Required 4 clicks down ele
to keep a glide, otherwise she'd pitch up to stall.
My questions are many, but my most nagging query is:
What?
I'm scared to launch this thing again.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Could use a little help.
Thanks a bunch,
Pete

[RCSE] RE: F3J in the Rockies - tow men available

2002-04-22 Thread Howard Mark
Title: RE: F3J in the Rockies

Bob,

F3J is
really not an incredibly strenuous activity. Towing with a pulley requires more
bulk and leg strength; and less raw speed.
You
only pull for a few seconds.
Guys
in our general physical condition should have no problem.
HOWEVER -- I am working to get hired tow men
(high school football team
guys) at the contest.
Dr.
Dan is also in negotaitions with another group.
You
will need to supply tow equipment - which requires a minimal investment (mainly
mono) for a basic setup.
Let me know if you are
interested.

RE: [RCSE] F3J in the Rockies - frequency list

2002-04-22 Thread Howard Mark

Dan,

Different frequencies are not necessarily required for flyoffs. But all
fly-off pilots MUST have a unique frequency. For this reason, I'd like to
know what frequencies that pilots have available - so we can tell them which
to use for the flyoffs. For example, I'm the only pilot registered on ch 59
- so I'll use that channel for the contest and the flyoffs. Skip, Dusty and
Lenny are all on Ch 12 for the contest. They can do that because their team
has protection (team members do not fly against each other) for up to three
pilots. However, if they all make the flyoffs - each pilot will need his own
frequency as they WILL fly against each other.

[RCSE] Pasadena / TRIAD / F3J in the Rockies

2002-04-19 Thread Howard Mark

OK - How about this idea.

THIS year - we replace Pasadena with F3J in the Rockies for the triad
series.
NEXT year - we have a soaring festival in Denver (Memorial day weekend as
usual) as part of the QUAD (or triad if Pasadena is dead).

Thoughts?

Mark
