[SlimDevices: Touch] CI Audio VDCSB

2010-04-22 Thread luny

Hello,

Currently I have an SB3 with a CI Audio VDC•SB.
The CI Audio VDC•SB supplies 5V DC @ 2.2 Amps.

Can I also use the VDC•SB for the Touch?
Can somebody confirm this will work?

Thx in advance

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and burn in

2010-04-22 Thread Gazjam

Getting mine today to replace an SB3, looking forward to improved
digital out into my Beresford Dac.

Most new bits of kit I've had needed some time from new to bed in
soundwise. Now the Touch has been out for a while, can any experienced
users comment on if this is the case with the Touch?

Ta.

No.

Standard now playing screen with titles and artwork. No SSH or inbuilt

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?

2010-04-22 Thread RichardLittlewood

I removed about 5 GByte of non-music files from the USB (~220G in a 320G
drive used now). I then did another factory reset because the player had
lost mysqueezebox.com password and there appears to be no way of
entering it except after a factory reset. After doing the welcome
wizard I mounted the USB drive and started a scan.

After 4 hours or so it stopped the server with the usual warning SBT
has stopped due to a problem (really informative that one). I then
restarted the server and it continued scanning (it still is acording to
the server status actually). I see the memory is 67% full under
advanced/diagnostics.

However, now everything is working well. I have my 3k file library
all available with albumart and I am logged into mysqueezebox. Lets see
how long it lasts.

I think this proves that the problems are more software related than
hardware. If it works well intermitently then it could always work if
they just fix the damn bugs.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue ( Solution!)

2010-04-22 Thread JohnSwenson

Tonight I tried and tried to get it to stutter or do anything wrong and
nothing worked, it played flawlessly no matter what. 24/96 -8 flac,
over WiFi to the server with spectrum analyzer or VU meters, long name
so text scrolling in the now playing screen. I tried slideshow over
WiFi as well. It just sat there and worked.

Its hard to debug something when when you can't make it happen.

The worst average CPU was about 50% which was when using VU meters.
Once every several minutes the CPU utilization would go up to 95% for a
very short time, but still no interruption to the music. The spikes
didn't seem to have any relation to the music, it wasn't at the
beginning or end of a track, just somewhere in the middle.

The VU meters were interesting, when playing a 16/44,1 wav file turning
on the VU meters increased the CPU usage a lot, but when playing a 24/96
-8 flac turning on the VU meters made hardly any difference.

[SlimDevices: Touch] The Ing is coming

2010-04-22 Thread Quad

My Touch has been running perfectly well for the last two days. The
quick and hasslefree setup with the touch screen is a joy.

The things I like the most over the Duet are:

- touch screen
- native support for HE-AAC (mysqueezebox.com is now sufficient for my
favorite radio stations)
- 24bit/96kHz support (I don't claim that I can distinguish 24/96 from
24/48 but it's state of the art and I like the idea that my carefully
recorded and/or remastered hi-res material can be played back without
transcoding. Period.)
- rock stable
- WOL works after coming back from mysqueezebox.com
- no rebuffering at all regardless FLAC compression level and bitrate
(external server is wired to the router, Touch is wireless)
sound quality (To my ears, to my brain and to my ass even the SPDIF out
into the same DAC sounds better than the Duet. If you somehow think
that's impossible, feel free to do so, but don't waste your time
answering me. For me it's an impressive fact and the usual subjective
price/sound correlation can be sorted out at USD 300.)

There is literally ONE thing – read my lips – ONE thing that I'm
missing. (I'm not Bill Clinton, you can trust me.) There should be a
more customizable browsing menu in 'SqueezeOS'. The only reason why I
have to run an external server and can't use the embedded one is the
excellent CustomBrowse plugin by Erland.

Disclaimer:
- I'm not a Logitech employee (nor Slim Devices, Sonos, CIA, UBS,...)
- I like Obamacare

cheers to you all

a lot of music. I'd imagine lots of PC based software would struggle to
get that scanned let alone a small little touch.

Ricard,

I don't believe that Touch loses the password, there is some other
connection problem when tinySC/Touch Server is running.

Try http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=538071postcount=17
and see if it reconncts you to mySB after you've had the error message.
If that works like it did for me, then it shows the password is

My understanding is that the Touch doesn't have a native setup for

I was surprised no one else has yet commented on the initial sound from

A six hours later most of this had disappeared but its taken a week of

Hi Gazjam,

Currently switching between analogue and digital (coaxial), via a QED
Digit/Positron DAC, trying to tell which is best. Analogue more
enjoyable, via the DAC more information!

The analogue outputs are very good, there is always room for
improvement but will I be able to hear it? I'm really enjoying
listening to mine but may have to think about mods to the QED Digit or
look for an alternative.

The TeddyPSU (in my opinion) was a must have for the SB3, on the Touch
it make only a very slight difference to the bass notes, perhaps
slightly clearer and goes lower but my speakers are not really bass
monsters and excel in midrange. The SB3 PSU was a right sack of Cr
and flooded the mains with noise and replacing it made a huge
improvement. I may move the TeddPSU to the bedroom SB3/NVA AP10 system.
An improvement for the Touch but is it £200 worth?

I think the B'Dac issue is with the NVA pre/power amps passing through
and amplifying anything thats fed into it rater than being filtered
like a conventional amp.

Your real world take on the improvements (will I actually HEAR it??),
ring true with mine, which makes your comments on burn in for the Touch
even more relevent. :)

Another question?
The Touch display...how do you find viewing it from a distance?
I know about the two skins and I sit about ten feet away from the

I found the middle text size on the SB3 quite viewable, I whilst I know
the text size is SLIGHTLY smaller on teh Touch, I would THINK that the
white text on a black background (once ive changed the default
wallpaper) will be even more legable?
How do you find it?

Thanks mate.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Performance comparison between my old Server and Touch internal one?

2010-04-22 Thread Gazjam

Have always used a server (of course!) to run my SB3, but with the Touch
on its way I'm curious about the idea of using its own server rather
than having to have the PC on?

Some info:
My server is an old Dell GX260SFF P4 2Ghz with 1B ram running windows
XP.
I use an external WD 1TB USB hardrive to supply the FLAC files.
I use IPENG to control my music...about 36000 tracks last count.

The SB3 was wired to an Access Point in the same room, which in turn
was wired to the main router connected to my modem.
The only wireless part of the setup was my wifi connection from the
ipod to an access point in the same room as my SB3

Now sometimes I got slowdowns when using the SB3, and I had just put it
down to my server being an old computer..but people are using EVEN
LESSER spec PCs (and not just running Linux ;)) without any problems.
I noticed it particularly with SS 7.5...the MYSQL was running 92% CPU
on XP, which caused slowdown.

Not a major drama, slowdowns come up now and again not all the time but
it IS a bit of a pain.

I wondered if the slowdownds were with the SB3 itself, and the Touch,
with its uprated CPU and memory, would not have this issue?

On paper my PC Server has enough horsepower to run my music centre..so
any thoughts, ideas or opinions welcome!

Of course, the best way to find out is for me to just TRY it (which I
will), but Im just wondering what you thought.

Ta.

Thanks for that, just wondering...
do you have an old fireguard to put round it? ;)

Its just arrived, so going to set it up..will get back with how I find
it.

Its very simple. The DAC has a voltage out, so no I/V stage is needed.
The output goes to a series resistor after which is a cap to ground
(low pass filter) then a series cap (SMD electrolytic, not sure of the
model) and on to the RCA jack.

The only thing that bothers me is that electrolytic cap, it doesn't
really need to be there. The voltage out from the DAC chip is already
ground referenced. Without a polarizing voltage the electrolytic cap
won't be working correctly. Unless its a non polar electrolytic.

 John S.

Interesting, thanks John. Presumably the series cap is there to remove
DC offset, however according to the spec sheet of the AK4420 this should
be less than 60mV. Can you see the value?

2010-04-22 Thread marlo

I'm running sbs (7.5) on an single core Atom Whs (1,6Ghz, 2GB RAM). And
I also like the idea of using the touch's internal server. At it's
current state, its performance and stability is miles away from the
atom and that stopped me from following that idea very soon.
Besides, I don't want to miss the extended features of the 'real' sbs
(eg. dynamic playlists.).

I think Gaz has a good point here. Most components need a period of
burning in to achieve their optimum sound. Personally I am not going to
comment on sound quality until I have used mine for a week or so.

Are you using the mysql that comes with SBS?
In that case you might be able to gain a little by doing this

However I do not think that is your problem.

Are there anything unusual in the server or scanner logfiles? errors?
constant repeated scanning?

See, it IS better than a Duet ;)

I got mine earlier today, setup in minutes playing from external
server.
Love everthing about it honestly, sound into my Dac is sublime.
Did a comparison with analogue outs, which while better than my old SB3
ain't a patch on the digital out.

Will be even better once te Touch burns in ;)

Wellit's here. :)

seup and running in minutes after upgrading it's software.
What a cracking little bit of kit!

I had concerns (from seeing videos online) about the screen text size
but you know what?
It's spot on. Bright, very clear and sharp. There's several now
playing views and once you switch off the silly wallpaper to a black
background, the albumart with track information is really great.
Only niggle I have is that the stand makes the Touch angle back too
far, and I had problems seeing the screen easily due to reflections and
the angle being bad.
Lego block with a blob of blutak...sorted. Fit n forget and out of
sight, now the screen is spot on. An adjustable stand would have been
better, but not to worry.

It's been playing LastFm for the last couple of hours and the sound IS
changing.
Yup, it really is. :)

the bass is firming up getting more depth as it goes..more about the
song than the hifi stuff now.
And this is on 128k MP3.

Currently setting up screensavers n stuff...very cool toy that happens
to sound as good as it does.

Hi, thanks for the replies.

I DO own a Touch yeah..I was relaying my experiences with the SB3.
Actually, when I posted the Touch was in transit with the Courier and
I hadn't received it yet.

Been playing my LastFM for the last couple of hours..REALLY I
pressed with the sound quality into my Dac...even at 128kbs it sounds
sublime..a good step up over the Sb3 into my Dac.

I think the problem is mysql related..as it always hovers at high
usage, even when I uninstalled the Trackstat plugin..
I've cleared my dell server of any SB software, cleaned out the
registry and defragged my hard drive.
Fresh install of version 7.5 with a hopefully speeded up XP...I'll see
how I get on.

If I still happens I'll take a look at the server logs.
Thanks.

Mozilla.org. Logitech sold vaporware with the Duet. It's that simple.

Folks that claim they've never had issues with the duet either:

 1) rarely use it
 2) have it setup right next to their router
 3) live in a dream world

Good luck to all you Touch owners. You're gonna need it to remotely
 enjoy your music.

To answer your questions and again false statements/comments:

Just exactly what vaporware did Logitech sell? The NMP division doesn't
even SALE software so how do they sell vaporware? I had one of the first
Duets sold. It worked right out of the box. Took all of 7 minutes to
setup. And actually, my Receiver is the farthest Squeezebox from my
wireless router and I live in an over 5000 sqft home. But again, my
network is properly setup with the wireless router in almost the exact
middle of the house and on the middle of three floors, set to the
channel with the least interference IE not the default channel. I don't
have my router setup in the bedroom next to the PC and cable outlet and
then expect the signal to go through multiple walls/floors to reach a
Duet on the far end of the house. The second Duet took about 5 minutes
to setup because I didn't have to read the directions.

I am the furthest thing from a Fanboy. Do I enjoy my Squeezeboxes, I
do, mainly because I love music and listen to music for 12 hours or
more everyday. I have been in the last three beta programs and know I
have told Logitech many many things they didn't want to hear. What good
is a Fanboy when one is developing a new product. I am still upset/mad
that the Touch needs an Internet connection for setup. I have a
business model for the Touch that will not work because of this fact.

Now for the three:
1) My Duets are used for a minimum of 4 hours a day. I am listening to
one now. I even use one in one of my vehicles everyday.
2) Already covered, it is the furthest from my wireless router.
3) Actually I live in reality and know that the problem with just about
anything is usually me or the fact that I will not except that something
or anything could be wrong with something. I taught Introduction to
Basic Programming in the 80's. It was evening classes so I had adults
and students as young as 12 years old. The 12 year olds finished the
whole course ahead of schedule and I had to come up with extra work for
them. The adults did not complete all the programming assignments. Kids
know and admit they messed up and then find the problem. Adults say the
they did it right but the program just isn't doing the right thing and
they feed it in again just to keep getting the wrong result. You seem
to be are one of those adults. So if your definition of a dream world
is properly working wireless network and always working Duets, maybe I
am lucky enough to live in your dream world because that is exactly the
world I am living in.

PS. With a little work and proper troubleshooting while admitting that
it just could be something other then the Duet, you could live in this
world also. It could be as simple as buying a new router!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Performance comparison between my old Server and Touch internal one?

2010-04-22 Thread Mnyb

92% cpu ! maybe you do a clean reinstall of the whole machine, if it's
only used for music. I gets high during start for 10 sec or so

Unless when you are scanning then 90% is the norm, it scans as fast as
it can using the resources available.

Or do you need to transcode, then it could be high.

I have an 1.2gHz machine 3% cpu when playing flac to 1 Squeezebox

when transcoding via SOX to get the 24/96 flac to play on my lesser
players.

70% cpu load.

As already mentioned, something has to be wrong if it's continuously
using 92% CPU. If it's only now and then it could be normal, especially
if you are measuring while browsing your library or doing something that
execute queries towards the database.

I've almost only used Linux of course but I can't imagine that it's
normal that it uses 92% continuously on Windows.

If you are using my plugins note that:

- TrackStat runs import, export and restore operations in the
background, so if you have started one of these it might be running and
cause high CPU. Restore and import can be pretty slow if you have a lot
of renamed/moved files in the files your are restoring from backup. You
will get a message in the server.log when it's finished. Import/Export
operation is visible in the Custom Scan settings page.

- Custom Scan plugin runs import, scanning and export operations in the
background, you can see in the Custom Scan page if something is running
or not.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Performance comparison between my old Server and Touch internal one?

2010-04-22 Thread Gazjam

server PC now reinstalled with 7.5 rather than 7.4.

You know what?
7.5 seems to run a LOT sweeter than 7.4 did.
Currently scanning my library, mysqld at 14 percent CPU load,
scanner.exe at 73 percent.

More efficient coding maybe? A bugfix?

I DO transcode Flac files on the server rather than on the SB3/Touch,
which perhaps in 7.4 was a problem.

At this rate, I might even reinstall TrackStat on teh server! Loved it
when used with IPENG.

Like a super playlist/favourite function.

Think for teh moment I'll stick to using the USB for pictures for the
Image Viewer screensaver.

Thanks for the replies.

[SlimDevices: Touch] TouchServer Synchronisation

2010-04-22 Thread DigitalMitch

Does anyone please have any success or tips for getting the
TouchServer/tinySC to stream synchronously to itself and a couple of
other players (specifically Receiver and Radio).

It will sometime work for moderate periods and at other times won't
last a few seconds without rebuffering/stuttering and losing sync.

My Setup
Touch attached to Samsung Story 1.5T
Receiver and Radio, wired via Homeplug [this network supports 5 players
from SBS on WHS]
20,539 tracks - 95% FLAC ripped by EAC at flac -6 768kbit/s
I have had some scanning issues covered separately here
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230

Symptoms
rebuffering and stuttering - ometimes continuous, sometimes reduces and
stops.
complete silence (sometimes restarted by skipping track)
Touch 'Now playing' not updating the progress bar (but on cycling can
display the VU and Graphic Equaliser displays)
Receiver stops playing (light goes dull) but Controller and Touch still
think it is sync'd [unsync'd and resync'd to get it playing again]
track moves to 'Stopped' status.
Radio and Controller don;t display artwork (Touch does with text but
not 'just' artwork)

You can use the Analog VU Meter style without jstraw's images, it
will use the standard Logitech VU Meter graphics by default.

The images hasn't been published as separate files yet on jstraw's site
but I'm sure he is working on it.

By the way, for anyone interested, I just uploaded a Analog VU Meter
style for the Radio too and it's a bit slower than the Touch but if you
just want some moving needles it definitely works. I need to adjust the
Custom Clock applet a bit to make it possible to only show a single
needle on the Radio, at the moment it shows 2 needles which doesn't
really make sense on the Radio which has mono audio.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and burn in

2010-04-22 Thread Phil Leigh

I don't want to up[set anybody (honestly) but:
1) burn-in testing as described in the links posted earlier is about
stress testing (often to destruction) to determine mortality rates etc,
especially in high voltage, high risk components. The sort of components
found in audio gear are rather different - except for large caps used in
valve HT circuits. The burn-in described here is not about burning them
in to make them better it's about burning them in to see if/when they
fail

2) The mere fact that (audio) equipment ALWAYS sounds better after
being burned-in really should give you pause for thought. Why would
this be? - after all, we know that actually electrolytic caps begin to
deteriorate as soon as you start using them... What law of the universe
determines that burn-in is always beneficial to audio quality? Have you
EVER heard anyone say it sounded great at first then it got worse...
No, thought not. The reason is simple. It is NOT happening in physical
reality.

3) Over a year ago I got my Touch. In preparation for this very
question I made some recordings (24/192) of the analogue and digital
outputs when it was just out of the box, after 1 week, 1 month and
nearly 12 months. AudioDiffMaker finds nothing different in these
recordings.

4) Human audio memory is rubbish. We are (mostly) great at pitch,
rhythm/timing, harmony, melody and timbre. Very poor at everything
else. The brain on the other hand is the most powerful and elegant
thing in creation...

5) I really hope no-one belives that the digital circuits burn-in. I
just can't recall the last time I felt my new computer improved its
speed and cripness of image, disk read speed etc during its first few
days/weeks of usage... The analogue circuit of the Touch comprise the
DAC chip, two caps and a resistor. These are not the sort of caps that
burn-in (form).

None of this matters. What matters is that you like the sound, now that
you are used to it.

Having an electronics background from years ago, burn-in to me was
always about running electonics over a long period of time to gain
confidence that none of the components would fail due to infant
mortality. It was about improving performance or making then work
better.

Yes, the brain and how it affects perception is very powerful. In a
completely different area - has you car ever run smoother, faster, etc.
because you washed and waxed it? Because you changed the oil? Mine has
:-). And I'm still not immune. I recently had my car detailed and I
swear my car runs better. Does it really? Of course not, but my brain
perceives it as such.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and burn in

2010-04-22 Thread m1abrams

Phil - some people believe cables burn-in :) Maybe if you apply
upwards of 10kV and several 100s of amps you might see a change to a
cable. So trying to straighten someone out of the thought that burn-in
of a digital device like the Touch is a myth is a long road if they
think their copper changes the way it sounds by apply a few volts to
it.

Heck is far as they are concerned what happens inside the Touch is
nothing short of a freakin miracle.

I think the burn-in myth probably started with speakers where burn-in
actually does have some merit since you are talking about a device that
has an elastic component that does change a good bit depending on the
make as it is used. But pretty much everything else is either pretty
static or formed within seconds of first use.

That's what I did and I don't have a software DHCP server running on my

already so I did the method you described in your first post and chose
a new static IP address (192.168.1.144). Then I reconnected to my
wireless network. After that I checked the diagnostics screen on my
Touch and those two IP addresses where blinking back and forth. I
thought maybe the static IP I chose would show up after I rebooted my
Touch but only the old DHCP assigned IP showed up. I repeated the same
steps after I turned off DHCP on my router, (turning DHCP back on after
I saw my static IP show up in the diagnostics screen) and now I have a

I figured it should be version 5, but was wondering if perhaps it had
been updated yet and whether anyone had a later version.

Beta testers last year were asked to exchange their earlier beta
versions of the Touch and were sent devices showing that they were
hardware version 5. IIRC, this was at about the same time that they
went to production, before sales were held up due to the software
development issues.

Hi Erland

I don't use all the functionalities of CustomBrowse regularly

But my browsing structure looks like this thanks to your plugin:

-My Music
-Audiophile
-Album
-Classical
-Composer
-Album
-Jazz
-Artist

-Pop

If there would be a possibility to browse by composer at the top level
together with artist and album, this would already be a huge
improvement as the composer field is populated within classical music
only.

Thanks!

[SlimDevices: Touch] FatFinger Skin for Touch

I played a bit with my Touch today to modify the NowPlaying screen to
better suit my fat fingers - I made the buttons the same size as the

Attached is a Zip file with the patch necessary (or just the changed

Enjoy!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Looking for good backup program

2010-04-22 Thread MrC

I tried this software back in March, and decided to remove it.
Unfortunately, the version I'd installed (up to date at the time) did
not uninstall well. It left a task around, but the task description
was non-existent, causing launchd to crash / restart constantly. I
discovered this only after about a month when debugging some other
problem. The logs were littered with crash/error messages deposited
every couple of seconds.

The problem has since been resolved, as there is an Uninstaller.

The screensavers take up significant CPU as I understand it, especially
the analog VU meter one. Perhaps the CPU is getting maxed out.

To avoid the issue, perhaps you could try not using the screensaver and
just leave the now playing screen up.

The Touch can not play WMA lossles by itself.

But if you run the server on a Windows machine it should transcode to

Do you have flac.exe installed ?

If you scroll down a bit to:

Code:

What are your settings there or are they greyed out ?
