[SlimDevices: Touch] CI Audio VDCSB

Getting mine today to replace an SB3, looking forward to improved digital out into my Beresford Dac. Most new bits of kit I've had needed some time from new to bed in soundwise. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
I removed about 5 GByte of non-music files from the USB (~220G in a 320G drive used now). I then did another factory reset because the player had lost mysqueezebox.com password and there appears to be no way of entering it except after a factory reset. After doing the welcome wizard I mounted the USB drive and started a scan. After 4 hours or so it stopped the server with the usual warning SBT has stopped due to a problem (really informative that one). I then restarted the server and it continued scanning (it still is acording to the server status actually). I see the memory is 67% full under advanced/diagnostics. However, now everything is working well. I have my 3k file library all available with albumart and I am logged into mysqueezebox. Lets see how long it lasts. I think this proves that the problems are more software related than hardware. If it works well intermitently then it could always work if they just fix the damn bugs. -- RichardLittlewood RichardLittlewood's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37668 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue ( Solution!)
Tonight I tried and tried to get it to stutter or do anything wrong and nothing worked, it played flawlessly no matter what. 24/96 -8 flac, over WiFi to the server with spectrum analyzer or VU meters, long name so text scrolling in the now playing screen. I tried slideshow over WiFi as well. It just sat there and worked. Its hard to debug something when when you can't make it happen. The worst average CPU was about 50% which was when using VU meters. Once every several minutes the CPU utilization would go up to 95% for a very short time, but still no interruption to the music. The spikes didn't seem to have any relation to the music, it wasn't at the beginning or end of a track, just somewhere in the middle. The VU meters were interesting, when playing a 16/44,1 wav file turning on the VU meters increased the CPU usage a lot, but when playing a 24/96 -8 flac turning on the VU meters made hardly any difference. [SlimDevices: Touch] The Ing is coming
My Touch has been running perfectly well for the last two days. The quick and hasslefree setup with the touch screen is a joy. The things I like the most over the Duet are: - touch screen - native support for HE-AAC (mysqueezebox.com is now sufficient for my favorite radio stations) - 24bit/96kHz support (I don't claim that I can distinguish 24/96 from 24/48 but it's state of the art and I like the idea that my carefully recorded and/or remastered hi-res material can be played back without transcoding. Period.) - rock stable - WOL works after coming back from mysqueezebox.com - no rebuffering at all regardless FLAC compression level and bitrate (external server is wired to the router, Touch is wireless) sound quality (To my ears, to my brain and to my ass even the SPDIF out into the same DAC sounds better than the Duet. If you somehow think that's impossible, feel free to do so, but don't waste your time answering me. For me it's an impressive fact and the usual subjective price/sound correlation can be sorted out at USD 300.) There is literally ONE thing read my lips ONE thing that I'm missing. (I'm not Bill Clinton, you can trust me.) There should be a more customizable browsing menu in 'SqueezeOS'. The only reason why I have to run an external server and can't use the embedded one is the excellent CustomBrowse plugin by Erland. Hi Gazjam, Currently switching between analogue and digital (coaxial), via a QED Digit/Positron DAC, trying to tell which is best. Analogue more enjoyable, via the DAC more information! The analogue outputs are very good, there is always room for improvement but will I be able to hear it? I'm really enjoying listening to mine but may have to think about mods to the QED Digit or look for an alternative. The TeddyPSU (in my opinion) was a must have for the SB3, on the Touch it make only a very slight difference to the bass notes, perhaps slightly clearer and goes lower but my speakers are not really bass monsters and excel in midrange. The SB3 PSU was a right sack of Cr and flooded the mains with noise and replacing it made a huge improvement. I may move the TeddPSU to the bedroom SB3/NVA AP10 system. An improvement for the Touch but is it £200 worth? I think the B'Dac issue is with the NVA pre/power amps passing through and amplifying anything thats fed into it rater than being filtered like a conventional amp. -- shevans SB Touch, TeddySB3 (PSU), QED Digit Positron PSU, NVA P90sa passive pre-amp, NVA A40 monoblock's, Fostex FE206E based big purple people eaters! [SlimDevices: Touch] Performance comparison between my old Server and Touch internal one?
Have always used a server (of course!) to run my SB3, but with the Touch on its way I'm curious about the idea of using its own server rather than having to have the PC on? Some info: My server is an old Dell GX260SFF P4 2Ghz with 1B ram running windows XP. I use an external WD 1TB USB hardrive to supply the FLAC files. I use IPENG to control my music...about 36000 tracks last count. The SB3 was wired to an Access Point in the same room, which in turn was wired to the main router connected to my modem. The only wireless part of the setup was my wifi connection from the ipod to an access point in the same room as my SB3 Now sometimes I got slowdowns when using the SB3, and I had just put it down to my server being an old computer..but people are using EVEN LESSER spec PCs (and not just running Linux ;)) without any problems. I noticed it particularly with SS 7.5...the MYSQL was running 92% CPU on XP, which caused slowdown. Not a major drama, slowdowns come up now and again not all the time but it IS a bit of a pain. I wondered if the slowdownds were with the SB3 itself, and the Touch, with its uprated CPU and memory, would not have this issue? On paper my PC Server has enough horsepower to run my music centre..so any thoughts, ideas or opinions welcome! Of course, the best way to find out is for me to just TRY it (which I will), but Im just wondering what you thought. The only thing that bothers me is that electrolytic cap, it doesn't really need to be there. The voltage out from the DAC chip is already ground referenced. Without a polarizing voltage the electrolytic cap won't be working correctly. Unless its a non polar electrolytic. John S. Interesting, thanks John. You're gonna need it to remotely enjoy your music. To answer your questions and again false statements/comments: Just exactly what vaporware did Logitech sell? The NMP division doesn't even SALE software so how do they sell vaporware? I had one of the first Duets sold. It worked right out of the box. Took all of 7 minutes to setup. And actually, my Receiver is the farthest Squeezebox from my wireless router and I live in an over 5000 sqft home. But again, my network is properly setup with the wireless router in almost the exact middle of the house and on the middle of three floors, set to the channel with the least interference IE not the default channel. I don't have my router setup in the bedroom next to the PC and cable outlet and then expect the signal to go through multiple walls/floors to reach a Duet on the far end of the house. The second Duet took about 5 minutes to setup because I didn't have to read the directions. I am the furthest thing from a Fanboy. Do I enjoy my Squeezeboxes, I do, mainly because I love music and listen to music for 12 hours or more everyday. I have been in the last three beta programs and know I have told Logitech many many things they didn't want to hear. What good is a Fanboy when one is developing a new product. I am still upset/mad that the Touch needs an Internet connection for setup. I have a business model for the Touch that will not work because of this fact. Now for the three: 1) My Duets are used for a minimum of 4 hours a day. I am listening to one now. I even use one in one of my vehicles everyday. 2) Already covered, it is the furthest from my wireless router. 3) Actually I live in reality and know that the problem with just about anything is usually me or the fact that I will not except that something or anything could be wrong with something. I taught Introduction to Basic Programming in the 80's. It was evening classes so I had adults and students as young as 12 years old. The 12 year olds finished the whole course ahead of schedule and I had to come up with extra work for them. The adults did not complete all the programming assignments. Kids know and admit they messed up and then find the problem. Adults say the they did it right but the program just isn't doing the right thing and they feed it in again just to keep getting the wrong result. You seem to be are one of those adults. So if your definition of a dream world is properly working wireless network and always working Duets, maybe I am lucky enough to live in your dream world because that is exactly the world I am living in. PS. With a little work and proper troubleshooting while admitting that it just could be something other then the Duet, you could live in this world also. I don't want to up[set anybody (honestly) but: 1) burn-in testing as described in the links posted earlier is about stress testing (often to destruction) to determine mortality rates etc, especially in high voltage, high risk components. The sort of components found in audio gear are rather different - except for large caps used in valve HT circuits. The burn-in described here is not about burning them in to make them better it's about burning them in to see if/when they fail 2) The mere fact that (audio) equipment ALWAYS sounds better after being burned-in really should give you pause for thought. The reason is simple. It is NOT happening in physical reality. 3) Over a year ago I got my Touch. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and burn in
Phil - some people believe cables burn-in :) Maybe if you apply upwards of 10kV and several 100s of amps you might see a change to a cable. So trying to straighten someone out of the thought that burn-in of a digital device like the Touch is a myth is a long road if they think their copper changes the way it sounds by apply a few volts to it. Heck is far as they are concerned what happens inside the Touch is nothing short of a freakin miracle. I think the burn-in myth probably started with speakers where burn-in actually does have some merit since you are talking about a device that has an elastic component that does change a good bit depending on the make as it is used. But pretty much everything else is either pretty static or formed within seconds of first use. -- m1abrams m1abrams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=850 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77727 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

JohnSwenson;538759 Wrote: Thats why I said to plug it into a laptap rather than a router or switch on the LAN. That's what I did and I don't have a software DHCP server running on my laptop. My Touch had a IP address (192.168.1.5) assigned to it by DHCP already so I did the method you described in your first post and chose a new static IP address (192.168.1.144). Then I reconnected to my wireless network. After that I checked the diagnostics screen on my Touch and those two IP addresses where blinking back and forth. I thought maybe the static IP I chose would show up after I rebooted my Touch but only the old DHCP assigned IP showed up. I repeated the same steps after I turned off DHCP on my router, (turning DHCP back on after I saw my static IP show up in the diagnostics screen) and now I have a static IP. -- oofda oofda's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=36801 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77625 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
