[UC] Man on bicycle casing cars on 4900-5000 Catharine St

2011-08-10 Thread Naomi Fiordimondo
From Facebook this morning:

A little while ago a man on a bike was casing out all the cars on the 4900
block of Catharine Street, tried to intimidate a woman, and then pedaled up to
the 5000 block of Catharine. She advised everyone to remove any valuables from
your car (I'd even remove any spare change). Crimes in this area this summer
have been happening at all times of the day... in broad daylight. (Someone
posted about this in the Cedar Park Neighbors page a little while ago.)

Just drove past abt. 20 mins ago. There was a TV camera guy from WPVI (Ch 6)
and a number of other folks that could have been print/web reporters
(notepads in hand recording comments from individual folks off to the side).
There was also a crowd of about 15-20 folks (not including security) and a
man in the middle of the crowd writing on a notepad. (I was guessing the man
was the designated scribe recording the list of belongings that will
hopefully be retrieved from each apartment?) Not sure how you can dictate
every important thing you own and need to retrieve from a home while
standing in a crowd on the sidewalk but I hope this is some help to the
Windermere residents who have already been through so much.

[UC] Carpet Tiles?

Has anyone ever used carpet tiles?

(Carpet tiles are modular, stick-down sections of carpets around 20 sq.
that you can lay in designs and can replace individually if they become
damaged. This is one manufacturer: http://www.flor.com/)

Do they stay down? Do you like them?

We have a floor in really bad shape that we would like to carpet and are
considering this as an options.

Thanks for any input!

[UC] Central Air Units Stolen

2009-04-07 Thread Naomi Fiordimondo
Not sure if this is part of a new trend but wanted to let you know that over
the weekend, a few central air units were stolen off our block. I am not
sure of the best way to secure these units but I can tell you the ones that
were stolen were visible from the street (about 1/2 back in the alleyway)
and there was no barrier (fence, etc) to prevent them from being moved from
where they were installed.

[UC] Looking for Smaller Radiators

2008-09-14 Thread Naomi Fiordimondo
Anyone replacing their old cast iron radiators?

We are getting ready to rearrange our kitchen and the design hinges on being
able to replace the one big radiator with two smaller units to fit in front
of/under two windows. (We looked into baseboard units and found out we'd
need 18 of baseboard to replace the BTUs from this big guy!)

I know folks are sometimes upgrading and looking for someone to haul them
away - or have them in their basement from a previous job. We'll come and
get them if they work for our space. (Ideally, about 30 wide or narrower
and somewhere around 28 high but within a few inches of this would likely
work, too.)

Thanks!

[UC] Lost Dog spotted - is it yours? - at 50th Baltimore last night

Male, I'm guessing about 40lbs. I'm not sure of the breed. Chow/ Husky-like
features (Curled tail, thick pointed ears, chow-length hair) BUT fur is
red/auburn and is smaller than both in stature. He is wearing a flea color
and a regular collar but would not let me or another neighbor get close
enough to see what was on the tag. Looks like he may have been out for a few
days - maybe even a week? We've spotted him 2x last night on our block (50th
Catharine) looking for food and water and I saw him in Cedar Park and over
by Dock St trying to make friends with other dogs.

[UC] FREE Original Front Door - Salvaged from 46xx Larchwood?

2008-02-24 Thread Naomi Fiordimondo
I salvaged this door when the owner replaced it. It was the original door
from the house and is really quite beautiful. It measures 39-1/2 x 81 and
has 6 rows of 4 lights for a total of 24 panes of glass - all in good
condition. It could use a scraping/paint job but is in good condition
otherwise.

I salvaged it from Larchwood - I think - and had the idea of doing an fun
interior project with it but we have decided otherwise. It is VERY heavy.
You will need help getting it into your vehicle. If my husband is around, he
will be glad to help.

We are at 5007 Catharine St (diagonal from Dock St just off Baltimore ave).
The door is in the breezeway alongside the porch. (It was stored covered
under the porch up until this morning.)

Please come and rescue it before my husband puts it on the curb.

Thanks.

Title: Re: [UC] Sad commentary

This is indeed a sad commentary. There were some wonderfully diverse and locally owned vendors operating out of the food court that were moved out so we could have more multi-billion dollar corporate chains brought in. Not only is the food they are serving unhealthy, but their business practices will do nothing positive for the community. The majority of the money spent will be sent back to corporate headquarters. (KFC and taco Bell are both owned by Yum! Brands the worlds largest restaurant company based in Louisville, KY and Quiznos is based in Denver, CO.)

This is from Quiznos website:

Quiznos sells a franchise, on average, every 4 hours. This means that by the time a flight leaves L.A. and lands in Chicago, Quiznos has sold another franchise.

Quiznos signs a lease, on average, every 14 hours.

A new Quiznos opens, on average, every 8 hours somewhere in the world.

Quiznos, Taco Bell, KFC to hit Moravian
By austin lavin
April 19, 2005

Officials moved one step closer to filling the Moravian Cafes at 3401 Walnut Street with announcements that Taco Bell, KFC and Quiznos signed a letter of intent late last week.In addition to filling two of three remaining spots in the food court, the University also finalized a lease with CVS Pharmacies.

With the deal, officials announced that the current campus CVS located at 3915 Walnut St. will eventually close in the fall.

Construction will begin on CVS soon, Penn won't start construction with Quiznos or Taco Bell or any retailer until they sign a lease. But a letter of intent is a good sign of progress, Facilities and Real Estate Services spokesman Tony Sorrentino said.

A letter of intent is not necessarily a binding legal document. However, Sorrentino said that the University has confidence that a lease will be signed.

Taco Bell is a Mexican fast-food chain, Quiznos sells subs and KFC sells chicken.

Officials are still looking to fill one remaining spot in the eastern side of Moravian, a space which has remained mostly empty since the beginning of the semester.

Famous Famiglia and Gourmet Ice Cream will continue to operate.

Though no contract is in place, Sorrentino said he hoped the new food court tenants will open by September.

A dividing wall currently exists between the half of the 15,000-square-foot site that will become a CVS and the other half that will be occupied by five individual food venders.

Both campus CVS stores will operate for a few months during the transition, but officials hope to have the old space in use by 2006.

The 3900 block of Walnut Street now has several major vacancies, which officials said they will address later this week.

The new placement of CVS upsets some who live on the western side of campus.

College freshman Nicky Berman, who lives in Harnwell College house, said the new pharmacy will be inconveniently located.

She also said that she does not plan on visiting the new Moravian to eat because she has no interest in any of the new restaurants.

They are all really bad for you, she said.

College sophomore Eitan Danon looks forward to change.

I'm just really excited to have Taco Bell on campus. We've long deserved a Taco Bell, Danon said, adding that he will probably go more often because of the new selections.

I am puzzled at the fact that split systems are not more common in the
US. They have all the advantages of central AC without requiring
expensive and inefficient duct work, and are great for zoning. I have
seen them in commercial installations, but in that case they have a
single evaporator for each compressor. One of the big advantages of a
good split system is that you can have two or three evaporators for
 each compressor.

The only split-systems I'm familiar with are relatively small. That
is to say, they are typically aimed at installing a single evaporator
in each small room of a fairly small room complex, and are severely
limited in both the total number of cubic feet which can be cooled, and
the distance the evaporator can be from the compressor. Each evaporator
is only capable of cooling one room.

However, if by split system you are simply referring to something
different from a Window Unit, where the Compressor and evaporator are
in a single chassis, then that is the norm in the US for any kind of
installed or whole house (or commercial) cooling system.'

A typical commercial installation, like in an apartment house, for
example, is more likely to be a chilled water installation, where a
central chiller chills the water which is in turn piped to the
individual in-room evaporators, which may or may not include fans.
These systems are typically switched between hot water and chilled
water on a seasonal basis. Which is why Warm Spring days tend have no
cooling available, and cool Fall days no heat!

Residential systems typically use a Freon (whatever it's called now)
gas instead of water.

The primary advantage to a high-velocity system is that it does NOT
require expensive ductwork. Because of the number of these 4-inch ducts
per room, and the significantly higher air-flow, the issue of
efficiency is different. Efficiency is a multi-headed monster.
Generally speaking, efficiency equates to the ability to cool any
given area more than it does to the cost of any system. [i.e. an
undersized unit of any kind simply can not cool an area even if it
costs less both to install and run.]

Based on the little bit I know about Japanese (don't know about
European versions) split-systems, their efficiency is significantly
lower than that of any US-style central system where the evaporator
and compressor are independent of the distribution system. That is to
say, one needs significantly more compressor capacity to cool any given
area as that area (volume) increases in size.

Probably the biggest reason why Japanese style split systems are not
popular in the US is the simple fact that they require an unobstructed
location in the room -- either fairly high on the wall above furniture,
or on a wall by themselves. This requirement tends to integrate quite
poorly with most US housing and decorating tastes. These kinds of
cultural differences are quite similar to why Asians and Europeans like
watching TV on Cell Phones and hand-held games while most Americans
prefer to watch TV on as big a screen as they can afford. Instant
Messaging adoption is much the same issue ... Americans have far more
networked computers with 9 to 17 inch screens than they have
cell-phones.

I think you missed the part where I explained that our bar and wait staff helped us make the decision to have limited smoking hours. They felt it was too great a financial risk (for them and for the business) to completely ban smoking based on our clientele and location. And again, we were in FAVOR of the ban. We want all bars and restaurants to not have to make the tough decision of either income or health. If all of them are non-smoking, its a non-issue.

Vincent is right, we are not 100% non-smoking. But Abbraccio and the White Dog, although we are only 1 mile apart, have very different surroundings as far as competition and customer base.

As we are located in the heart of the campus and surrounded by 3 other bars that all offer smoking all the time at their bars, we agonized over the decision to go smoke-free for years before we finally came to a compromise decision a year ago. This decision came from many discussions with our bar staff, wait staff that works in the main bar and seasonal patio area, and our customers. We decided to ban all smoking except for in our main bar from 10pm - 2am and on the seasonal patio. (We have never allowed smoking in the restaurant or at our piano bar.) Our late night customers threatened to go elsewhere if smoking was banned entirely and our staff (many of whom are non-smokers) were worried that, without customers, their incomes would be drastically reduced. Our late night crowd is mostly graduate students, hospital staff and neighbors - many of whom smoke. With 3 other bars offering smoking on our block, we felt that we couldn't completely go smoke free without seriously hurting business - and our staffs' income. The partial smoke-free decision did hurt financially us, but we felt that the calculated loss was for the best for our employees' health and for the well being of our customers.

Prior to this decision, we extensively looked into ventilation systems that would draft the smoke out of the room more quickly but being in a very old building that has already been retrofitted for kitchen equipment, we didn't have many options. So we use the hood over the grill station to vent it out and have the incoming air positioned to bring in fresh air as quickly as possible. We also, whenever possible, offer additional seating away from the main bar for those that don't want to be near the second-hand smoke.

We really wanted to see this bill go through so that all the bars were on an even playing field - we even sent one of our employees to testify an the council hearings for this bill. It was really difficult for us and for our employees to have to choose between physically healthy and financially healthy decisions. Elizabeth is right, we do have a choice. We could go completely smoke free on principal and hurt the financial balance of the restaurant and hurt our employees financial well-being (which they have told us they can not afford), or we could compromise and allow smoking in 1 of our eight dining rooms for 4 hours a day.

I think making sure the White Dog is here next year and that our employees can support themselves is worth a small compromise. We support 100+ employees with a living wage (starting at a min. $8/hr - instead of minimum wage - $5.??/hr). We offer healthcare and dental insurance, a retirement plan, an emergency sunshine fund, free bank checking plan, help with their taxes, an interest-free computer loan program, reimbursement for smoking cessation programs (their choice), a workplace giving fund and, of course discounted and free food (that's sustainable, local and fresh), drinks and admission to our events - including international travel with our sister restaurant program. Our staff is treated better than most restaurants and we always keep their best interests at heart when making decisions. Keeping the business financially viable is in the best interest of all 100 employees, not just the folks working late night who want the big tipping smokers to sit at our bar.

Anyone who has been in the restaurant business can understand that there is a lot more to running a restaurant than just the food. It's a delicate balance with a small profit margin. This bill would have helped put everyone on the same playing field and we will support it when it is reintroduced.

Title: Re: [UC] No Smoking Bill, White Dog Abbraccio

Some people will argue that, because we serve meat that we are contributing to obesity and heart disease rates and, therefore do not care about the health of our customers. A vegetarian lifestyle, like a non-smoking lifestyle, is in deed more healthy for the body and for the planet. But there are many people out there who choose to eat meat. Just like there are many folks out there who choose to smoke. Our compromise with the meat was that we would only sell humanely raised meat. Our compromise with smoking is that we have a small area of our restaurant designated smoking for a short period of time.

Is this our final decision? Absolutely not. We reserve the right to try other options as circumstances change. (Elisabeth, interesting idea of a non-smoking night or two. Ill bring it up next week.) If enough new and current customers come in late at night and say they want a smoke-free environment, we would gladly change our policy. (And by all means, the next time you are in the Cafe during the 11 hours that we do not allow smoking, and want to leave a note that you would come during our late night hours were it not for the smoking, please do. All management, the owner and many others here read the comment cards. And policies do change based on the feedback we receive from them.) But for now, this is what the customers and employees have said they want.

Trust me, I would be thrilled if we go 100% non-smoking. Its really difficult, confusing and space-consuming to advertise when we have smoking and when we are non-smoking. As I do the advertising and promotions, Id much rather be able to say it all in 2 words instead of a dozen. But I cant ignore the desires of our customers and staff. Our mission is to serve the customers, staff, community and the earth - listed in no particular order. (To read more, visit http://www.whitedog.com/mission.html ) All decisions made at the Cafe takes all of those areas into account.

And just for the record, I am not the owner of the Cafe. (But thanks for the thought!) Officially my title is Communications Director but, as anyone in small business knows, you wear whatever hat needs to be worn at the moment.

Vincent is right, we are not 100% non-smoking. But Abbraccio and
the White Dog, although we are only 1 mile apart, have very
different surroundings as far as competition and customer base.

As we are located in the heart of the campus and surrounded by 3
other bars that all offer smoking all the time at their bars, we
agonized over the decision to go smoke-free for years before we
finally came to a compromise decision a year ago. This decision
came from many discussions with our bar staff, wait staff that
works in the main bar and seasonal patio area, and our customers.
We decided to ban all smoking except for in our main bar from 10pm
 - 2am and on the seasonal patio. (We have never allowed smoking in
the restaurant or at our piano bar.) Our late night customers
threatened to go elsewhere if smoking was banned entirely and our
staff (many of whom are non-smokers) were worried that, without
customers, their incomes would be drastically reduced. Our late
night crowd is mostly graduate students, hospital staff and
neighbors - many of whom smoke. With 3 other bars offering smoking
on our block, we felt that we couldn't completely go smoke free
without seriously hurting business - and our staffs' income. The

Title: Re: [UC] UPenn Vet Hospital

I agree with Kyle. UPenn is Very overpriced and not very customer friendly. Best for only the most dire of emergencies.

I love Girard Vet Clinic for our cat. They are a little scruffy on the exterior and they are a walk-in only so you may have to wait a little bit depending on how late you get there but they genuinely care about the animals and will bend over backwards to give great care at a very affordable price. Cindy, the vet there, is also one of only vets in the city who will work on strays. Most vets will just offer to put them down or refuse service all together.

Our office managers cat chewed out her stitches after getting spayed. It was not a pretty sight. She took the cat to UPenn at it was an emergency and was told that the estimate for restiching the cat up was $1700 1/2 of which needed to be paid upfront (cash or credit card only) before they would even start work. A vet student overheard the teary-eyed conversation and quietly suggested a way to bandage up the cat until she could get her to Girard the next morning. Girard took her in first thing the next morning and $72 later, her cat was healthy and able to go home that afternoon complete with a little collar to prevent her from ripping at the stitches again.

Ive heard other similar stories from other friends. I choose to take our cat to a place that really cares about the animals and the owners.

If the neighborhood and appearance of Girard scares you, The Cat Doctor (on 22nd st (?) just off Spring Garden) is also very good but much more expensive.

We gave mr. hugs liquid antibiotics (bubble gum flavored -- I'm pretty sure it was just childrens edible antibiotics) he actually seemed to like it.

Thunderbelly went to the vet hospital because he'd eaten a piece of metal. They x-rayed him and told us it would probably work itself out. The visit was $300. And the metal did work istelf out. He didn't seem to mind.

They broke things, shrugged it off and then charged me more than they quoted. Ive used Mambo 3 times and feel that they are by far the best in the city and worth every penny. I continue to recommend them to everyone I know. Some of my moves and my furniture were really challenging (the last move was 9 straight hours and involved a solid mahogany desk that needed to go on the 2nd floor past some delicate woodwork). They handled it all with grace, ease and a smile. Mambo is by far the best Ive ever used. Hopefully this last move was it but, if I need to move again, you can bet Ill call Mambo.

Title: Re: [UC] Mid-Atlantic AAA- Why Do They Suck So Badly?

I had my tires slashed one night near South Street about 5 years ago in the middle of August. Fortunately, I had a place to stay nearby that night so I decided to call it a night and call AAA in the morning. I explained to them that I had my tires slashed. (Which implies that there is a hole in the tire and it will not hold air correct?) So, 3 hours after my call, a guy with an air compressor shows up to fix my flat. No patch kit, no fix-a-flat, no nothing. I had a full-size spare but the special jack required to release the spare from the holding area in the car was long gone so he was unable to do anything for me and said hed tell AAA to dispatch someone else now that they knew what the problem was. 2 hours later another guy with an air compressor and a flat bed showed up and offered to fix my flat. I showed him the hole. He shrugged and offered to tow me home or to a garage - either of which would require that I pay him has I was at 5th South and a tow to Ucity was out of range for my basic membership. He said that I could pay him cash under the table and it would be cheaper than AAAs rates. I turned him down and called AAA again. After much screaming and my decision to completely give up on AAA and start calling local tow companies myself, a kind soul with the same model car parked behind me. He used his jack to get my tire out of the well, and had my slashed tire replaced in 5 minutes. I swore off AAA from then on.

one particularly egregious occasion, I wrote a nasty a letter and received,

have not carried a AAA membership for at least four years since our last two
cars came with their own road side assistance plans. I have always found
these plan provider's response time to be much better than AAA. I spoke to
a client who owns a towing company. He told me that his company gives AAA
calls a lower priority than other roadside company's call because AAA's
reimbursement rates are so low.

I had a completely different experience dealing with the Northampton County
AAA. I had driven to Easton for a court appearance. As I got out of my
car, I noticed that the rear, driver side tire was almost flat (which
surprised me since I hadn't notice anything wrong up to that point). I
proceeded to attend the hearing and then placed a call to AAA. I explained
where the car was parked, and they told me they would be there shortly.
Being used to Mid-Atlantic AAA's response time, I lingered in the courthouse
(it was raining) for several minutes during which time I realized that I had
left my umbrella in the courtroom. I walked back to the courtroom to
retrieve it and walked out of the courthouse, across the drive to the
parking garage, and up several flight of stairs to my car. (The amount of
time that transpired between the call and my arrival was no more than 10
minutes) By the time I arrived at my car, the AAA guy was already there, had
jacked up the car and was waiting for me.

Ive been hit up on this one before. Same story - AIDS , cop with bad directions, been walking for hours I see the guy sporadically near the White Dog hitting up folks on Walnut St. I gave him a token the first time with directions and offered to call for some help for him (the homeless hotline for emergency shelter). He said the busses he needed to take to Swarthmore didnt take tokens and declined the offer to call for lodging for the night. I saw him a few times since then but havent seen him in about a year.

These guys sound smarter than the guy who stopped me one morning
Telling me a story about how he had just lost a $25 bill and
Desperately needed a loan to get a taxi to take him to the
Airport.

There's another one that I've seen three or four times in as many
years. It was pretty convincing the first time, but now that I've
seen it a few times I'm impervious. I've run into this in different
parts of the city, with people heading in different directions.

Say you're walking west on Walnut. A guy approaches me walking east,
and asks me directions to 69th street station. So, you tell him to
turn around and walk about 25 blocks west. He deflates, he's already
been walking for 15 blocks because some cop gave him bad directions.
So, now he's walking alongside you, talking to you. Maybe the cop
gave me bad directions on purpose. The cop got all freaked out when
he found out I had AIDS, didn't want me near him and stuff. Oh,
that's awful, you say. He tells you what a good person you are, many
people don't understand about AIDS, but you aren't one of those. He
takes your hand, and there's a touching moment (literally) because he
really appreciates the simple human contact. Then he explains that
he's on his way to an AIDS hostel or retreat or something in
Swarthmore, and that once he gets to 69th Street station he's got 50
cents for the train - someone said it was the R3?. After that, it's a
pretty standard con, money for the train to 69th, money for the R3 to
Swarthmore, money for food, etc. He may throw in that he needs to be
there by some deadline, that he isn't going to make if he needs to
walk to 69th and then panhandle for the fare.

I've gotten this in center city when I was walking east (City Hall to
Temple), and in west philly walking west (69th street station to
Swarthmmore). Same story, possibly the same guy, it was more than a
year later. As I said, I've gotten it three or four times. Probably
comes from walking a lot.

One guy added a particularly pathetic twist. He appeared to be a deaf
mute, with a small pad of paper and a pencil. Same story, though.

You can get something called Antenna Service through the cable company. They wont advertise it I dont think they make much off it so you have to ask. Its about $13/month and it gives you all the channels that you would receive via antenna but through cable no box required if your TV is cable ready. This way, the regular channels come in clearly. We have it and it made all those maddening fights with the rabbit ears go away.

Re: [UC] arsenic in the soil

Title: Re: [UC] arsenic in the soil

Arsenic in the soil was an issue where I grew up in Jersey. When the railroad companies would replace the railroad ties, they would offer them up for free to whomever would take them away. Folks would use them for lining gardening edges or for creating raised beds. But the ties were heavily treated with chemicals including arsenic to make the wood last longer. The arsenic would leach into the soil, and then into the plants. It was also a big issue because many rural residents use well water and the arsenic would leach into the water.

As for our area, I dont know how it would get there or what effect it would have on the homeowner. Obviously its not good for the environment and the water system as a whole, but unless you eat the dirt or things grown in the contaminated dirt, I dont know if it is an immediate health risk. I think the only way to remove it is to remove the contaminated soil and replace it with new soil and/or clean fill. But, again, Im not a soil expert.

But he had a good selection and prices seemed reasonable (most everything a dollar, a few things were a bit more). And he was friendly. Its nice to have a veggie source so close by.

Philadelphia made headlines around the world a few months ago when Mayor
Street announced his plan to make the city the country's first major
city-wide internet hotspot. This plan would potentially provide free
internet access to city residents, and help attract new business and
tourism to the city. With an estimated cost of $10 million and build-out
to begin as early as summer 2005, now's the time to ask:

* What is Wi-Fi and what's all the buzz about it?
* What are the possibilities and benefits?
* Is Wi-Fi a reasonable priority given the City's tight finances?
* Can Wi-Fi help close the Digital Divide (or does it just expand access
for those who already have it)?
* What is the best management model (municipal, non-profit, corporate, or
some combination)?
* How can we ensure this plan meets its highest civic purpose?

Come learn more about Wi-Fi technology, how it's used, and its potential to
transform our city. Local and national tech and policy experts explore the
goals and challenges of the proposed plan, present case studies and models,
and discuss how it fits within a growing national trend of wireless

[UC] Oil vs. Gas Heat

2004-11-12 Thread Naomi
Title: Oil vs. Gas Heat

I am in the process of purchasing a UC house that needs the 50 year-old gas heater replaced. We are considering switching to oil - or some other way to heat that does not rely on a monopoly like PGW - and wanted to solicit opinions. (Has anyone done this recently? Any success or horror stories?)

We have a few factors that we are basing our decision on:

The Environment
Which has more of an impact? (Our initial thought was that gas was cleaner but Im guessing that gas and oil come from the same base ingredient and I have no idea what is involved on the back end to turn it into gas.) Are there any other realistic alternatives?

Cost
Were not wealthy. And the house needs a lot of additional work right away. Both the conversion/upgrade and the long term use need to be competitively priced.

Convenience Ease of use
Is it relatively easy to maintain? When there is a problem, will people actually come to fix it?

Any and all opinions appreciated. (And if I missed any big factors, feel free to let me know what I havent considered yet.)

Thanks.

I have heard this story from a number of other people - all registered

a lot of run-around. One person at the office handling the absentee

The other missing absentee ballots are unexplained.

Before we get to far into the conspiracy theory, I wanted to know if
anyone else is experiencing any difficulty in getting their absentee

I vote swapped in 2000, also with someone from Texas. We emailed before the election and afterward. The site was shut down shortly after I swapped votes. The political powers that be wanted the swapping to stop so they took the folks behind the website to court to argue the legality of swapping votes. While in court, they had an injunction temporarily shut down the site until they decided if it was kosher or not. So, if you are interested in this, do it sooner rather than later.

The idea is to connect to and come to an informal agreement with a Kerry supporter in a non-battleground state to pair your votes. I did this in 2000 through another website, hooking up with a Gore supporter in Texas (named Clydie!). So Clydie and I agreed that he would vote for Nader for me down there, and I would vote for Gore up here. That way I got my third-party vote counted on the national level, and Clydie did his part to get another important vote being cast for Gore up here in Pa. where it mattered for the electoral college. (Think about what could have happened if just a few more of the Nader supporters in Florida had done this back then)

Theres lots of information on the website FAQ page, including thoughtful responses to these very logical questions: Is vote pairing legal? http://www.votepair.org/faq.php#legal and How do I know that the person with whom I am paired will honor their pledge? http://www.votepair.org/faq.php#howdoIknow

Subject: [UC] Why Libertarians Need to Help Vote Bush Out

Today's New York Times Magazine presents yet another stark demonstration of why Bush needs to be voted out of office. In a word, the man is totally out of touch with reality, dangerously so. In the excerpt below, Bruce Bartlett, former Reagan adviser and libertarian Republican describes how Bush believes he is on a mission from God.
What does this have to do with University City? I can think of several things right off the top of my head, but I'll let others go first.

Without a Doubt
By RON SUSKIND

Published: October 17, 2004

ruce Bartlett, a domestic policy adviser to Ronald Reagan and a treasury official for the first President Bush, told me recently that ''if Bush wins, there will be a civil war in the Republican Party starting on Nov. 3.'' The nature of that conflict, as Bartlett sees it? Essentially, the same as the one raging across much of the world: a battle between modernists and fundamentalists, pragmatists and true believers, reason and religion.

''Just in the past few months,'' Bartlett said, ''I think a light has gone off for people who've spent time up close to Bush: that this instinct he's always talking about is this sort of weird, Messianic idea of what he thinks God has told him to do.'' Bartlett, a 53-year-old columnist and self-described libertarian Republican who has lately been a champion for traditional Republicans concerned about Bush's governance, went on to say: ''This is why George W. Bush is so clear-eyed about Al Qaeda and the Islamic fundamentalist enemy. He believes you have to kill them all. They can't be persuaded, that they're extremists, driven by a dark vision. He understands them, because he's just like them. . . .

''This is why he dispenses with people who confront him with inconvenient facts,'' Bartlett went on to say. ''He truly believes he's on a mission from God. Absolute faith like that overwhelms a need for analysis. The whole thing about faith is to believe things for which there is no empirical evidence.'' Bartlett paused, then said, ''But you can't run the world on faith.''

I have to agree. If Kerry is for reinstating the draft for both men women with no educational deferment and no conscientious objector status (as I have read but have not heard directly from Kerry), there needs to be a non-military option like volunteering in the school systems or hospitals or in the local and national parks. There's so much work that could be done by a strong volunteer work force that would really improve the quality of life for so many. And volunteer work is so rewarding and humbling all at the same time.

A lot of parks are filled with parasite vines like this
killing useful trees.

It's good there are people like you willing to volunteer
to do stuff like that for a whole summer.
When they did away with the draft they should have
replaced it with some sort of mandatory service to
the country for a year or two.

The only exemption would be for people
who join the military out of high school.

There are lots of things like this that could be done
to make things better at a minimal cost.

I spent an entire summer in Mannassas National Battlefield Park in Virginia
as a volunteer removing Trees of Heaven because they were an invasive,
non-native species taking over areas of the park. They are nasty, horrible
weeds cleverly disguised as trees. They send a tap root down nearly as tall
as the tree itself which has to be dug up completely. They also send out a
large web of surface roots. When removing these trees, you need to remove
ALL of these roots or new little baby Tree of Heavens will sprout from the
rings of root bits left in the soil. It was the hardest job of my life and
if I never see another Tree of Hell it will be to soon.

Title: Re: [UC] Habitat for Humanity

I use to volunteer regularly with Habitat when they were on the 4900 Block of West Stiles - both on my own and by bringing groups from the White Dog there. I found it very satisfying (but I'm just to busy now).

My suggestions: If you want to bring a larger (15+) group there, especially on a Saturday, call way in advance to book it. I would regularly book 8 months out for the White Dog groups. If it's a smaller group or just a few folks, they can probably just slip you in somewhere. Or if it's during the week (Tues - Fri) they probably have lots of availability.

They are now at the 4200 Block of West Stiles St. - just off Belmont Girard. Call them at 215-447-4639.

It's a good way to learn home repair/construction skills and meet some nice folks.

anyone participates in/knows about Habitat for Humanity. I've been meaning

I finally feel like getting off my duff and doing it.

We thought it might be nice if we could get a bunch of people (from this

Andy De Gruchy is too expensive, but he will recommend others who can do the job. The UCD people should have a listing for him.

I had our house and garage pointed last summer. It was done by Carlos Salvatore from Adam Brick and Stone pointing. Telephone is 215-990-8489. The cost was reasonable and the work excellent. He was neat and clean and left no mess after he was done.

You may want to talk to Carlo Salvatore of Adam's Brick Stone Pointing (215-755-6521). Carlo did the brick pointing on our house 5 or 6 years ago, works like a god. If the nature of the work is outside his specialty I would trust him to refer someone good.

2004-04-01 Thread Naomi
Title: Re: [UC] Interested in Pastured/Humanely raised meats and poultry?

If people are going to eat meat - which the majority of people in this country do, there needs to be more humane options. Yes, humanely raised animals are treated well during their lives. And yes, they are killed for food. They are killed in the most humane way possible - this varies by species.

If you are going to eat meat - and wear leather for that matter - you need to be aware of and respectful towards the animals' lives before it reaches you. Factory farmed animals - which is what you will mostly find in mainstream stores - are tortured and depraved during their short lives then they are crated off to be killed in awful ways with no respect towards their feelings or their lives as a whole.

If you choose to eat meat - which you do not need to survive - you should take responsibility for the actions that bring that meat to you.

If you don't like the thought of any of this, become a vegetarian. The earth will thank you.

Let me get this straight. These animals are raised naturally, without
hormones and chemicals, with good feed, not tortured all their lives or
anything like that. So these are humanely raised, right? Then what - one
day you slaughter them and ship them off to market and eat them? Oh...
Are they humanely slaughtered? Just wondering...

I'm planning to attend the pro-choice March For Women's Lives on Sunday,
April 25 in Washington, DC. In light of the right wing's attacks on
personal freedom in this election year, I think it's important to send a
message to the current administration loud and clear. Is there an

chartering buses, but of course, I'd prefer to enjoy the company of

We have this issue in Moravian Street behind the Cafe (which is a privately owned and cooperatively operated street). We use RK Towing. They are very responsive and often will just drive our street on their Penn rounds. They have occasionally towed our vendors for not having a sticker - an ongoing sore point with us - but they have also kept the street clear for the big delivery trucks to keep the businesses on this block running. If you want to talk to them to see what would be involved, talk to Kenny (215-271-0505) This service doesn't cost us anything as they charge the folks that illegally park to get their cars back (anywhere from $50 (if they just hooked up the car but haven't towed it yet) to $120 (if it's been towed and stored less than a day) and up depending on how long it's been stored on their tow lot.)

Just in time for Buy Nothing Day - November 28th

Just writing to let you know about an interesting new service in Philly called Freecycle. It's a way of recycling stuff you don't want to throw away. It works via a Yahoo listserv, which you can find at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/phillyfreecycle. It's set up so that you don't have to actually subscribe to read what people are offering, but do have to subscribe to post your own. There are a number of these in other areas of the country (and world). The Philly version was just set up in the last few weeks by Betsy Teutsch and Meenal Raval.

Current postings: a queen-size water bed, women's size 11 shoes, 5 rolls of packing tape, and in invitation to recycle your old computer.

Someone emailed me with this question so I thought I'd post the answer to the listserv.

Sorry to bother you, but where/what is the Farmstand??

The Fair Food Farmstand is a stand in center court in the Reading Terminal Market (12 Arch) every Friday run by the Fair Food Foundation. They sell a large assortment of local, sustainable, organic/chemical-free foods like cheese, meat, tofu and, of course, fruits and veggies. They have an email list you can subscribe to to receive weekly announcements of what the farmers are bringing in for the upcoming week. Just email [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you would like to get on the list, to order a turkey or if you have any questions!

I'd like to buy an organic turkey from a local farmer for Thanksgiving.
Last year, I was able to order one for pick-up at the White Dog; I have
unfortunately misplaced the contact info of the group I ordered it
through and haven't received any email about the program being run again
this year.

Does anyone know of such a program running this year? Thanks.

We have an inspector scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday) at 10am so we hope to be able to open tomorrow afternoon. I went to court yesterday to try and fight them forcing me to close but they made me anyway.
They are referring Pharmacy needs to the 49th St store. I asked about prescriptions called in recently to the 42nd store and he said the pharmacy is sealed closed and there won't be a pharmacist to answer questions until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest.

As I leave for vacation tomorrow morning, I'm hoping 49th St is able to help.

Re: [UC] RE: Bike traffic increases dramatically on Spruce St

Title: Re: [UC] RE: Bike traffic increases dramatically on Spruce St

In Cuba, they use low cement barriers spaced about 5 feet apart to separate the bike lanes from the traffic. Even though the traffic seems just as busy in parts of Havana, it is nearly impossible for cars to venture into the Bike Lanes during the straight aways. At the intersections, the border was marked with low-lying cement bumps that had reflectors in them. As a novice rider, I still felt completely safe at all times even with the cars just a few feet away. Perhaps we could lobby for something similar.

Just my $0.02.

Just for the record, a few weeks ago I was riding in that bike lane and got doored by a passenger who suddenly got out of a car in the lane next to me. I wound up in the ER for an open fracture to the toe (weird injury, I know, but I was wearing sandals). Before that, I was always vigilant and terrified when riding on Spruce between 38th and 33rd, and now I just plain won't ride there at all. It's just too busy with taxis, loading, and chaos. No one pays attention to bikes, and despite the sign regarding ticketing vehicles in the bike lane, I don't think people think twice about hovering there in their cars. I honestly don't know what should be done there, but there is still an inherent conflict between the bike lane presence and the fact that it just isn't safe... in other words, just because you put a bike lane there does change the nature of the street. So, what's the solution?

(I'm ccing the univcity list on this, not to bring up the bike topic again but just as a reminder to be safe on Spruce.)

On tuesday afternoon I took a one hour bike count on Spruce St. west of 38th using a digital camera. Tentatively between 110 and 120 bikes used Spruce St between 4 and 5 pm. In 1998 a pre-bike lane count was undertaken by the Streets Department Consulting Team at RBA 6 hours a day during 3 weeks in April. Back then the peak evening hourly count average was 75 bikes. The absolute highest number for any hourly count was 91 bikes in the morning.

This represents a 40 - 50% increase in bike traffic after bike lanes were installed on Spruce St. Over the few days I will do further analysis of the photos to determine helmet use, wrong way and sidewalk riding.

A side note - a Penn Police van and a flower van blocked the bike lane for several minutes in front of me., While the police van could claim emergency vehicle status (they were answering a call) the officers basically ignored the flower van right behind them.

try to cut yourself off from all such people. But in doing so, you can no
longer grumble about the failure of people to consult with the community or
alert residents when something comes up that you later wish they had
notified you about. You can try to isolate yourself from the unruly city
around you, or you can remain open to its constant blur of outreach and sift
through the stuff that rains upon your doorstep in good humor.

I recommend the latter approach. Circular Free decals are bad for civic
communication. A neighborhood with too many of them will be a neighborhood
that's poor at talking to itself.

I'm with Tony on this one. Sure, I get irritated at the flyers that keep
turning up; after all, how much variation is there among pizzerias? But,
I think I'd much rather allow nearly anyone to broadcast news, ideas
and opinions. (And as the recent Hack meeting indicates, flyers and
leaftlets can be very useful.)

On a related front, I'd like to throw a suggestion out to the community.
A few months ago, when we were getting the Clark Park Festival ready, we
were a little frustrated because we couldn't do posters as much as we
used to because UCD's been, well, pretty efficient at cleaning them up.
(And as we all know, the Clark Park festival posters have had a
tradition of being a lot nicer to look at than most.) But, the city laws
regarding posters are pretty clear-cut, and UCD's simply enforcing what
the city has as law.

But posters do seem to be a good thing for active communities (European
cities have them on many intersections), and they are a centuries-old
tradition. Has anyone noticed that cylindrical poster kiosk (or whatever
it's called) along the 40th block of Pine street? Seems to me that
these'd be a really nice thing to have throughout the neighborhood, say,
at particular street corners, and smaller design could be used in the
front yards of people who'd be willing to shoulder the responsibility of
cleaning and maintenance. (I'd been thinking of doing something like
this myself, but I can't find a design that's both attractive and
buildable within my skill-set.)

A while back I met a woman who worked as an on location accountant for
a movie production company. As she put it, movies shot on location
hemorrhage money. Everyone who claims to be inconvenienced by the
shoot gets paid off. Homeless people who say, hey, that's my usual
spot! get paid off.

Of course, if the neighbors don't cooperate, the production companies
may stop shooting in Philadelphia. If nothing else, they are paying
wage tax and sales tax, so they are bringing money into the city.

I don't remember any discussion or attempted communication but I did just get a letter (actually, a 1/2 page xeroxed standard form) crumpled in my front door (at 4400 Baltimore) informing me that certain locations (including the 4400 Block of Larchwood and areas near Clark Park) would be off limits for parking effective Sept 1 with no end date anywhere on the form.

Can they do that? Just take over blocks of parking? Is this generating revenue for the area businesses? Is the community getting anything from this? We haven't seen them in the White Dog since they've been here.

Subject: [UC] Hack filming in our neighborhood

About two weeks ago, I was talking with a friend, and he complained a bit
about the parking situation when _Hack_ films in the neighborhood. I sorta
of made conciliatory noises (I don't own a car, and I like the idea that my
neighborhood's such a great location), but he complained about how nobody
seemed to have _asked_ anyone about the production coming into the
neighborhood. Ive since spoken to several people who live on blocks where
filming's happened, and I heard the same story; it's as if someone had
decided that the filming next day signs were all the warning the
neighborhood needed.

Production companies aren't usually that callous, and there's the city's
film production office to deal with, so it's my guess that the producers of
_Hack_ must have spoken to _someone_ about filming in our neighborhood.
Whoever or whatever that was, they didn't seem to have notified anybody
about the way _Hack_'s production would affect our neighborhood.

Now I'm watching the students return, and there's the more-than-usual glut
of cars along our streets, and I'm wondering if any local production in the
fall's going to create even _more_ problems. And frankly, I'd rather not
have _Hack_ move into some other place for filming; like I said, it's
another reason to be proud of the neighborhood.

So I'd like to throw out a general, open-question thing to this list. Has
there been any kind of open community discussion about this? Has there been
any attempt to develop methods for handling the parking situation? Has
production helped out local economy in any big way (i.e., does the crew
ever eat food that's not catered?) Has anyone experienced any impact--
good, bad, whatever-- as a result of the production?

Has anyone been to the new gym on Chestnut St - Fit? Any recommendations one
way or the other? I'm also interested in any experiences anyone may have had
with their Personal Trainers. Thanks!

Re: [UC] Fit Gym?

2003-08-15 Thread Naomi
Title: Re: [UC] Fit Gym?

Here's what I found out about Fit (which I couldn't find in the phone listings):

Fit
4415 Chestnut St, Suite 201, Phila, PA
(215) 386-

Hours:
6am - 9pm Mon - Fri
9am - 5pm Sat Sun
(They said these hours will be expanding in September.)

Prices:
$349/year
$200/6 months
$89/3 months
$49/1 month

They have Personal Trainers.
$30/hour
$20/ 1/2 hour
They couldn't say if any of their trainers had a medical background but they did say that they have you fill out a medical questionnaire and they research the latest physical therapies for medical conditions. You can talk to a trainer before you hire them. And they said that they are a no pressure gym - opposite of Bally's no one will harass you while you are working out to hire them as a trainer.

Sounds like it's worth popping in for a visit. Hope this helps anyone else trying to get up the motivation to go.

I'd be interested in any feedback on Fit (they are two blocks from home which is attractive!). Please post to the list or copy me as well on direct responses to Naomi.

Thanks!

Title: Re: [UC] Indian Food Recommendation

I have eaten at all of the Indian Restaurants in UCity and am very partial to New Delhi on Chestnut. I avoid Sitar on 38th. I don't think they put any care into the food and I've found their small selection to be over cooked, greasy and, believe it or not, bland.

Does anyone have any recommendations concerning the numerous Indian

Re: [UC] housing for older years

2003-03-25 Thread Naomi
Title: Re: [UC] housing for older years

Even though I am quite a ways away from retiring, I have been thinking a lot about housing opportunities and creating community in this neighborhood that I love. I have been doing a good bit of reading about co-housing and have visited a number of co-housing communities - N Street in Davis, CA being the only urban one. The residents there bought up an entire block, one house at a time, took down the fences that separated their yards and created a large community green space behind their houses. There is a garden with plots for each of the households that want one, plenty of space for children to run and play, safety because to enter the space, you have to go through a house and out the back door, and each house had control of what the space directly behind their home looks like so there is individuality, too. One of the houses is run a a community space for meetings and art studio/work space, community dinners in the community kitchen (with a community outdoor patio and BBQ grill) and rooms for transitional people visiting the community or in the process of purchasing their own property in the community. The block is run like a corporation where you buy a share into the community when you buy your house. The money is used for community improvements and events - all controlled by the shareholders in the community. There are many generations and differences in interests among the people but, for the most part, it works because there is a balance of community and privacy (as each home is still individually owned). It has also successfully worked in Europe (Denmark, Sweden, Germany, etc.). I am curious if anyone else has an interest in creating something like this in UCity. I think this would be the ideal place to raise a family and to retire to.

I guess because I just had another birthday, I was once again thinking about
the problem of getting older and feeling safe living in this neighborhood I
love. I'm thinking that when I'm 70 or 75, or maybe before, my housemate and
I may no longer feel safe living in our big old house on 49th St.
I always fantasized about living in the beautiful house at 48th and
Springfield, with a group of older friends, when I reached that age. It has
that wonderful, round, enclosed porch to sit on. However, Ellie and her
husband have bought it and done such lovely renovations, and they might not
be open to the idea of an old folks home in the future.
Yesterday I was walking, and there it was! The beautiful apartment building
at 48th and Warrington. I can just imagine living on the second floor with
that great porch overlooking 48th St. I'm sorry to talk so enviously about a
place that many people currently call home, but I'm talking about 10 or 15
years in the future. Wouldn't it make great condominiums? And not necessarily
for only older people?
There is Warrington Community Garden across the street, and a great selection
of restaurants within one block, stores, Davis Pharmacy, the trolley,
Mariposa, barbers, St. Francis DeSales and Calvary with its cultural events.
Has anyone else been thinking about their senior years, and worrying about
living in their big old house, with its never-ending need for upkeep and
renovations? Does anyone else have any good ideas?

2 blocks up, Fresh Grocer sells them, I believe. You can also hop off at the 30th St (free exchange) and get them without having to pay to get back on to go to 40th St.

Anyone know where one can buy septa tokens on 40th Street? Last time I
was at the 40th Market station, they didn't have a machine, and I
didn't see a sign in a window on the way up indicating sales.

Thanks.

[UC] Dog Cage

2002-11-15 Thread Naomi
Does anyone have a medium sized dog cage that could be borrowed for a few
weeks to confine an injured cat? One of our cats has an injured leg and is
under Dr.'s orders to not run, jump or climb stairs. But she doesn't listen
to the Dr. and her house is a cat playground of things to jump on or run
through. She is also a bit of a scaredy cat and her siblings insist on
chasing her around. We thought if we could confine her in a quiet space for
a while, she might have a chance to heal.

Thanks.

[UC] Found Dog

2002-07-18 Thread Naomi

A friend of mine found a black male dog last night at 47th Baltimore. A
neighbor said she has been putting water out for the dog for the last two
weeks so he may have been lost/abandonded for a while.

(She has already contacted the owners of Mindy who put up Lost Black Dog
posters around the neighborhood. It is not their dog.)

If anyone knows anything about this dog, please call (215) 727-6510.

Thanks.
