If I remember correctly from the biographies I have read on both, JRR Tolkien was the first Roman Catholic Dean of English at Oxford. CS Lewis was both a friend and a confidant of Tolkien. Tolkien actually was instrumental in his conversion to Christianity. Apparently he was an atheist.
