same reason - I had i810 videocard. Following the advices I got from this

Have you got the device /dev/io.
To check, run 'ls -l /dev/io'
If it comes back 'file not found' you need to do a 'mknod /dev/io c 2 14'
and then 'chmod 600 /dev/io'

So from now on I accept -4 .old or what ever. But wouldn't it have been easier if

anXious to configure X-server 3.3.6 I can not get virtual consoles F1-F6 in
TEXT MODE anymore. Switching to F1 for example image is completely nuts. It

7.2, the same PC worked OK with RedHat 7.1, with x-windows running.
The monitor and the video card had been succesfully
detected in the installation, but, when I try to start X-Windows with "startx",

Hello,
I have an EVO n800w Compaq laptop. I use XFree 4.2.1 with the ATI
drivers. I try to use the TV-OUT of my video device. The laptop works
fine in 1440x1050 but the TV didn't like this resolution.
I can't change the resolution (CRTL ALT +/-), I can find the modelines
for the other resolution
