This is got me stumped. I have even switched hard drives. The last time I
tried to install and the PB did it again. This time I can't even mount the
hard drive. It is being resurrected as I type this by Norton Volume Recover.
DiskWarrier couldn't even see it. It mounted with SystemWorks.

The 5300ce has 16 megs on board, and so it cannot use the 56 mb card.
Why it can't use the 48, I don't know. Data Memory Systems lists a 48 MB
card for the 5300ce...
I haven't tested it, but on Windows machines with RAM limits, and for sure
on my 6400, usually the extra RAM doesn't kill
to make coffee with the inverter! grin

If you wanted to change from OS 9 to OS 8.6, is installation the same

OK, but where is it? If it can share files, so can the Mac, of course.
Umm actually no, but sorta, depending on HOW you want it to access the mac
files, and the Mac to access IT's files. Just because one can see the
other's sharing doesn't mean the converse (I've not played much with XP Pro
on it and defragment then such as Norton and no doubt
others will do this.

Did you try to use only the Apple extensions and the Toast CD Reader
extension. That's what i do on my 3400 and i can use my yamaha CD burner
placed in an external SCSI case as a CD reader without any problem.

you're pretty much stuck with Win95 on the 1400 unless somehow someone with
64 RAM is able to get just over the edge, that I can't with my 60. With
48, there's just no way.

people here. A company called Shreve Systems (which carries Mac stuff) is
going out of business. They've got some Powerbook items such as an auto
adapter for a 5300/190 for $5, dual battery chargers, batteries, and other

useability than they expected, than the reverse. Doing some homework is
definitely necessary if you don't wish to be disappointed. Don't just ebay
a used drive and expect happiness, is my take on it.

What? Most CD-R drives aren't supported by MacOS? That's nonsense. The
MacOS, actually several of them, support almost every SCSI CD-R without
using any extra drivers at all. I've used 4 different brands of SCSI CD-R
and RW with several different Macs and different operating systems. It was
adapter for Newton
Messagepads (www.kallisys.com) has had to deal with some special cases, for
example.
