I have used USB HDD for my LMS music for 15 years. In that time 2 drives
have failed so I just plug in the backup USB drive and buy a new one.

I have found unpowered backup drives don't fail (none yet). I don't
think a NAS is any safer than that. All powered drives will fail
eventually.

on any kind of USB drive. In my experience running a pCP LMS with files
on a quality NAS is just as quick and massively safer and robust.

I think it's very device specific. I have an old Western Dig 2TB USB
drive, and hdparm won't spin it down. I know hd-idle on raspbian would
spin it down OK from previous experience, but I tried a chunk of messing
around to get it to spin down on pcp with no luck (but didn't find the

and can't hear them. 3 are within arm's reach and 1 a metre away. It's a
bit unusual for me to have more than 1 USB drive powered up at once. I
can hear a fan in my NUC. :)

Regarding the use of a rpi4 instead of something hardware. I got the pi
in a nice cabinet for free. So it seemed obvious to go for that.
When I got SSH to work, things got much easier.
I think I'm done setting up. Maybe some minor tweaking remains.

Under Unix (and Linux) /home/usr/Music and /home/usr/music are not the

I tried powering down twice. Both times, it connected to the wireless
network, obtained and IP address, and when it indicated that it was
trying to connect to Squeezecenter, it just went blank.
I am able to ping the player, Squeezecenter is running, and I can
browse my music libra
If squeezecenter is running and can't see the squeezebox, first thing to
do is to restart the squeezebox by holding power down till it reboots.
Make sure is connects to the network etc.

computers, thats the "manual Network Configuration" you have a manual
configuration option at the bottom when you scrool, it also show's

the disk may not be mounted until you login. It may be better to keep
your music on the internal drive.
