This is not something you should do by a cook book approach. You should
understand what you are doing. The security of your communications is
at risk.

In particular, you should not tell people to accept an invalid
certificate unless you understand the precise nature of the problem, and
you have done a risk analysis. If that risk analysis indicates that the
risk to the users of your system is acceptable, you should still tell
people that they should never accept an invalid certificate without
management authority. (A recently expired certificate is a very low
risk, but one that doesn't match the server should ring alarm bells.)

Pidgin requires GUI libraries that only exist for desktop systems.

We don't know what protocol Oracle's internal servers use, although it
likely to be XMPP, so just search the relevant app store for XMPP. You

Regarding the original question, you cannot log on to Pidgin. What you
are failing to log onto is Office Communicator.

Office Communicator support appears to be provided by a third party
plugin, so you need to contact the maintainers of that plugin directly
as this list doesn't cover third party plugins. There seems to be more
than one, so I don't know which you are using.

NTLM authentication is one of the authentication schemes used by
Microsoft software. It is possible that the server you are using does
not support that and requires MS Kerberos. I don't know if the plugin
you are using supports that.

There isn't such a thing as a Pidgin account. Pidgin is a client

It is almost certain that they will need to see a copy of the debug log

Even though this is not the usual "can't login in to pidgin" question
from Oracle employees, you should probably take note of this standard
response, as it is some part of Oracle that sets the policy that is
resulting in the groups being overridden by the server.

The Oracle eyes only web page mentioned may give appropriate contact
information for obtaining more general support on Oracle's IM server.

We do not know anything about Oracle services, this is a peer support
list for a third-party software package (Pidgin) used by Oracle.

No, the necessary libraries to run Pidgin on iOS do not exist.

Pidgin cannot have clients, because it is purely a client. I wonder if
you are confusing Pidgin with the services it accesses (as is common

However remember that IM services are not provided to allow people to

It is unlikely that anyone here knows what Smarthinking's servers

Anyone with the ability to understand the OpenSSL documentation, which
presumably includes all the Pidgin developers, can become a free
certificate authority. The difficulty is convincing browser and
operating system suppliers that you are actually checking the identity
of the people requesting the certificates properly, and, for Microsoft,
probably paying them a fee for inclusion.

Certificates aren't necessary for encryption; they are necessary to be
sure that the encrypted channel is going directly to the organisation to
which you think it is going without a man in the middle being able to
decrypt and re-encrypt it.

cacert.org is a much longer established free certificate authority, but
they are still not included in Microsoft systems. letsencrypt get into
Microsoft software because they are a second level authority, although
that begs the question as to why Microsoft should allow that, for a
public second level authority.

Whereas cacert document their trust model up front, I couldn't see
anything explaining the trust model for letsencrypt on a quick scan of
their site.

2016-10-08 Thread David Woolley

On 08/10/16 22:49, Alex Oren wrote:

Are there any compelling reasons not to use an internet forum?

Their many advantages over mailing lists include:
- Easier searching for existing solutions.
- Fine-grained control over email notifications.
- The ability to display prominent explanation of what support can be
expected.

This subject produces very polarised response whenever it comes up on
other mailing lists, but from my point of view:

- I can afford to be on a lot more mailing lists that forums (with
forums you have to go and visit each one to see if there are updates);

- mailing lists provide a consistent user interface;
- although possibly not an issue with Pidgin, forums tend to result in
fragmentation, as people tend to belong to just one forum, and forums
are often advertising funded, so their operators tend to have an
incentive to get people to use their forum, rather than any other forum
covering the subject, exacerbating that fragmentation;
- forums don't allow you to maintain an offline archive that you can
search and search tools for them are often not very effective;

- forums cannot be read offline

Also if you are going to assume that there is one direction of progress,
shouldn't be you calling for Web RTC speech connections on the grounds
that forums are noughties technology (difficult without a paid for
contact centre, of course), but it does make the point that support
channels need to match those providing the support.

In my view, a lot of, so called, progress, is really either fashion or
driven by commercial considerations (e.g., as noted above, forums allow
advertising funding, and from the point of view of forum hosters, are
often seen purely as means of delivering advertising).

Yahoo is going to a completely proprietary protocol. There will be no

Pidgin, as the desktop user agent, has nothing to do that. You will
need to ask the people that run your instant messaging server.

Decentralisation can be a problem. SMTP mail is designed to be
decentralised, but anyone attempting to use it in that way, these days,
is likely to fall foul of spam filters that that want email to come from
a limited number of mail hubs that are trusted to vet their users.

(Actually, in my view, SMTP was the original IM protocol, however, it
bloated, both in terms of meta data, and also in the need to construct
emails as formal business letters.)

Similarly for SIP. Whilst it can do point to point normal users will
not accept incoming traffic from anyone but there ITSP. (SIP is
actually a decentralised IM protocol, as well.)

Re: Old Version Pidgin

2017-04-14 Thread David Woolley
Are you using this with the Oracle internal IM server or with a public
server? In the latter case, we would probably appreciate knowing more
about the problem.

In the latter case, could you please contact Oracle's internal support,
as they may be able to fix the problem at the server end, and, if not,
they are the only people with enough knowledge about their servers to be
in a position to raise a bug report.

You can download old versions of Pidgin from

There is no support organisation for Pidgin. You get support from other
users by posting a to public mailing list. You are warned that it is a
public mailing list at the time that you are given the email address.

In general, if you seek support for any open source software for which
you have not paid a support fee, your questions will be public.

For the avoidance of doubt, I am an ordinary user, and have no power to
remove the posting from pipermail, let alone Google or any of the many
other sites where it will have been archived.

Please note that today's postings are also public.

Pidgin is not something to which you can login. It is something that
you can use to login to many different things. In your case, it is
probably Oracle's internal messaging server, to which no-one on this
list has access.

However, we understand that people with access to the Oracle VPN can get
more information from ,
however we have no way of independently verifying this.

It generally surprises how many of the Oracle staff are unable to find
the correct place to get IT support.

We do not provide a service! We are fellow users of a piece of open
source software that can be used to access many different services. You
need to contact the people who actually operate the specific service
that you are trying to use.

There is no password for Pidgin; Pidgin just forwards your password to
the IM service you are using. You will need to contact the people who
run that service to find out why it is rejecting you.

People on this, peer support, mailing list will have no access to your
IM service and can only guess what it might be.
