I have a couple different 50 mile rides I do, they are both on mostly paved surfaces, both have at least 8-10 miles of climbing and descending. I’ve done both these rides for close to 25 years. When I got my first 650B bike (in the early 2000s), I started riding that bike more than most. It fits 38-42mm tires, has fenders, lighting, bag, racks etc... My zippy road bike has been shod with700 28-35C tires, it is lean and carries nothing but a small under seat bag. While the road bike feels “faster”. The time it takes to complete either of these loops on either bike is never more than the time it takes to make a quick bathroom break. Neither is ever faster than the other. Re: [RBW] Re: Finally building up the Hubbah Hubbah- any tips?
In regards to tires: I have Schwalbe super Moto X tires on my HHH They are big, fat, cushy tires. In my very humble opinion, they are perfect for the bike. Paired with a nicely broken in sprung brooks for the stoker, the bike has plenty of suspension for the stoker. We intentionally hit a bunch of bumps and potholes to find the limits of comfort. For those new to tandems, as the captain, it’s your responsibility to warn your stoker about bumps. For the poster who was concerned about tires clearing the brakes. The Super Motos are 2.4” and clear the brakes just fine. You need to unhook the brake. Keep in mind that the posts are really far apart. I’m running the stock rims that Rivendell offers for these tandems. A narrower rim might pose some issues with tire clearance but if you went with the Alex rims or the Velocity Cliffhanger, you should be fine. You will really enjoy your bike. [RBW] Finally building up the Hubbah Hubbah- any tips?
Tim, When I got my first tandem several decades ago I built it up myself. After it was built up, a few people commented on how “tricky” tandems could be. Not so. I built my HHH this year and it went together very smoothly. Set up the rear just as you would if it were a single bike, get everything dialed in then set up your timing chain. When you set up the rear, decide how you like your gearing, I run triples on my tandems so I use neutral chain line on the middle ring and middle of the cassette/freewheel. I like to bias my eccentric so it is low and forward, this keeps the seattube angle shallower than if it were biased towards the rear. Seattube angles on Riva are already shallow so if you want yours a bit steeper, bias it towards the rear. Getting tension adjusted is quite simple, assuming your chain is the correct length. With the eccentric set low and forward, I start with it loose in the 6:00 position viewed from the drive side, turn the eccentric forward, check tension so it doesn’t bind but is not so loose that it will come off. Very much like setting tension on a fixed gear or single speed. I am fanatical about brakes on tandems, do an A plus job on your brakes. You have a wealth of help on this list. [RBW] Re: 59 vs. 52 Clem L
One other thing to consider, is there a possibility you will share this bike with anyone or have guests who could use it? Since step through frames offer a lot of flexibility in sizing you may add that into your decision making process. If people shorter than you might use the bike then it adds to the versatility if you go with the smaller bike. If you may l Ian it to a taller person then perhaps the larger size might be a better option. I test road a few Mixtes at Riv and two sizes would fit but the smaller one felt a little cramped, not a lot but the larger bike felt better. Good Job Patrick, Certain beans will go quickly from first to second crack, I observe this with Kenya coffees quite often. It could also be the heat of your roasting apparatus. [RBW] Re: Roast your own coffee?
For those who asked; I think equipment is far less important than buying good quality beans. Coffee is a food crop. Environmental factors, processing and handling all play a huge part in how good the beans are. Personal preference is also important, if you like something, that is all that matters. The difference between really good coffee and mediocre coffee is like the difference between perfect summer ripe homegrown tomatoes and pink pulpy tomatoes purchased from the grocery store in the dead of winter. I've used the Gene roaster, the Behmor roaster, a commercial Probat, stovetop whirlypop poppers and several different hot air poppers. I've been able to take the exact same coffee and roast it in a commercial roaster and roast the same beans, from the same bag and roast them in a hot air popper. I have shared these coffees in blind tastings on various occasions to my staff when we all worked together. Staff coffee was a daily ritual. No one ever detected any remarkable difference between coffee roasted in a $15,000 commercial roaster and a $15 hot air popper. I worked as an executive chef for many decades. Results are more dependent on understanding the basic and simple chemistry than in buying expensive equipment. If you want a nice roaster and like John, will amortize the cost and justify the expense, then get one. It will work great for years. If you are going to use a hot air popper then take the time to find an Oiginal Westbend "The Poppery" It has a 1500 watt heater and they work much better than any 1200 watt machine. The 1200 watt machines can often stall your roast and many will have trouble going from first crack to second crack. These days, I use the poppery exclusively. My reason is quite simple, it works great and it roasts a small amount of coffee. I like small batches because I can change the coffee I drink about every three days. I roast my coffee while I am doing morning chores in my kitchen, I roast completely by ear and pay very little attention to the roast until I hear the first crack ending. At one time, I took one of these units apart and put the heating element on a separate plug that I plugged into a Variac. For those who don't know, a Variac is an instrument that allows you vary the voltage of anything electronic. Repairmen that work (ed) on tube televisions, tube amplifiers and lots of other equipment, would use them to slowly power up gear and feed low doses of voltage rather than blow up a costly component. Using one on an air popper allowed me to reduce the heat once the beans reached first crack. The benefit to this is to allow the sugars to caramelize Slowly and (theoretically) develop more complexity. I no longer do this, it was a fun experiment and I used it for a long time but it doesn't make a very big difference. I've purchased beans from numerous vendors and when I had a connection with a boutique commercial roaster I got beans from him. I like Sweet Maria's, I like the way they work with farmers, I like the way they give details about the origins of their coffees and the results of various roast profiles. The benefits of buying from someone like them is to sample numerous different coffees from around the world and decide what you like. Descriptions of coffee nuances are not tossed around like wine adjectives but it would help any new roaster to read descriptions and try the coffees that sound interesting so that you get an idea of what the very subjective descriptions will taste like to you. For me, it's fun, I love good coffee, it takes very little time the way I roast it. All my friends are blown away by how good the coffee is. I also roast and give out coffee at the holidays. It's the one time of year I would make use of a larger machine. Maybe I'll get another one someday but right now a friend and I are working on establishing some connections in Central America and building a portable roaster. We'll see how that progresses. Re: [RBW] Re: Roast your own coffee?
I've been home roasting for years and years. Even in the Bay Area where I live, there is no coffee available that is as good as what I can roast in 7 minutes in my kitchen. Benefits, fresher coffee Lower expense, about half the cost of buying roasted coffee Ups drops green beans at the door Green coffee stays fresh for months but after about six months, some of the nuances can degrade a bit but it's still very good I'm able to drink something different every couple days High quality coffee and lots of varietals available. Nuanced coffee like you probably have not tasted before. Coffee has about twice the flavonoids of wine. Ability to control your roast profile and tailor your roasts to your specific tastes. Super simple Takes less time to roast coffee than to go buy it. Plenty more pluses Negatives? I haven't really found any. I usually keep about two days ahead on my roasting so the coffee has a chance to rest and the oils settle. Some types benefit from a longer rest but two days is a good ballpark. A little smokey but I just open the window over the sink. Chat makes a little mess but I let it blow into the sink and it takes ten- fifteen seconds to pick up. It's far easier than most people expect and you really don't need to overthink it. It's just like cooking, don't waste your money on a bunch of gadgets, just play attention, decide how dark or light you prefer your brew and roast accordingly. I'm happy to talk with you privately. Patrick, I divided an 8oz bottle between three tubes. I turned the bottle upside down and then marked it with a sharpie. The amount of air space at the top of the bottle would make it harder to guess at the amount accurately. Make sense? I'm not particularly exact with air pressure. Re: [RBW] Re: OT: Is there any effective protection for iPhone 6 glass?
Patrick, What makes the 6 and newer phones more fragile is the glass goes all the way to the edge of the phone and there is no protective frame border built in to the casing. It makes for a slimmer phone with larger screens but if the phone tops and lands on the edge, the glass breaks. I wouldn't expect that to change anytime soon. Sleep on the plane. As for the 2.4" tires, if you are referring to the Super Motos that you suggested to me, they look like a big fat road racing motorcycle tire with plenty of clearance. I've got a Mtn Mixte from the first batch and my PBH is about 78. The bike is a great fit so don't think you need to be Roman's size to fit one well. Re: [RBW] Re: On downsizing (and the 1 bike, and 650b)
One other thing to consider and it may have already been mentioned. If you go with two sets of wheels, consider having the width of the rims very close or the same as each other. If you have to completely readjust your brakes every time you make a wheel swap, you won't be as likely to get all the added utility that "one" bike was intended to offer. [RBW] Rear disc question for Hubbuhubbuh
I don't have much experience with disc brakes. I'm planning to run a cable actuated disc as a drag brake on the HHH. There was a Blug post that said to run a 40mm bracket with a 180mm rotor on the small size tandem. The bracket on mine measures 50mm on center for the mounting screws. To confuse matters further, the Avid BB7 180mm rotor I was looking at has no mention of bracket size but lists 74mm in the description. Is that a pad measurement? Is the 40mm bracket the de facto standard for that brake size or is this a case of caveat emptor? [RBW] What tires are people running on their Hubbuhubbuhs?
Just curious what sort of tire choices people are making for their tandems. I'm thinking about starting with something in the 2.00"-2.25". Schwalbe and Continental both have some nice looking tires. The Riv site is currently out on a couple of them but I can wait for a little while. The largest Compass tires are a bit smaller than what I want. I've been running Schwalbe Thunder Burts on a single for a few months and they are great but might be a bit less sturdy for a tandem than I want. The HHH has a theme song by the Beat Farmers called "Happy Boy" It seems rather fitting, cue the kazoo. Re: [RBW] Hubbuh Gears
Getting in sync with your stoker has a huge role in riding uphill. This is particularly true if you try to stand for hills. On my road oriented tandem, I have 30 tooth front and 30 tooth rear. This has been an issue with less experienced stokers and has had ME standing and going as hard as I can while they did less work. Gearing aside, get really familiar with your stoker before attacking anything too steep. These HHH tandems are ideal for all the fun things a tandem is great for. A 24 front with a 34 or 36 rear should cover most needs under most conditions. Preparing your riding partner for what's in store is a real responsibility for the captain. The stoker is never at fault, IMHO Ray -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Cork grips shellac - clear vs. amber
I did it for vanity Ryan. I've used the cork grips in their raw state and they end up looking dirty. They probably function better with no coating since the cork maintains it's nice dry texture. [RBW] Orange Hubbuhubbah WOW!
I got to see the orange tandem in the steel today. Anyone getting one is in for a great experience. All the colors are great but that orange just screams Funhouse. Mine is blue and it will take a little while before I can gather everything to build it. These really are some of the best tandems ever. Unless you are part of a team that always rides together, these FAT tired cruiser tandems will be the most versatile, most fun bikes. I'm putting quick releases on my seat binders to facilitate quick adjustments for anyone wanting to try it out. I'm curious how people like the Bullmoose Boscoe bars. The only misgivings I have are due to the fixed angle. I'm sure it's not an issue if you dial in the fit for the captain but what about other people who are taller or shorter. Re: [Ext] Re: [RBW] Re: The Hubbuhubbuhs are here!
That orange looks great! Who is going to be the one who starts the tandem gallery so we can see them all in one place. Bill mentioned his feeling quite normal as a single. I have ridden my tandem solo to pick up other people, the only issue is the rear wheel being easy to lock up with no weight over it but it rides great solo. The guy that built the frame used to routinely take his on BART (our local rail system) and ride up and down the line until he met someone who wanted to go riding. Re: [RBW] Re: Braking for Tandems - from the Santana website
I've had a tandem for over 30 years and my drag brake is an Arai drum. It has been controlled by a Suntour bar on until recently and it is now controlled by a Suntour thumbshifter. In many years of tandeming, with numerous different stokers, it is my humble opinion that it is asking a lot of a stoker to be attentive 100% of the time so they can apply the drag/emergency brake. For a dedicated tandem team that always rides together and the stoker is always attentive, things may be different. My personal experience is to communicate bumps and intentions to the stoker but to handle all the controls for the sake of safety. I wonder if a barcon pulls enough cable for a disc? Re: [RBW] Re: book of possible interest to Rivendell riders
I'll admit to having a few fountain pens here. I've owned them for nearly 3 decades. Parker, Waterman and Pelikan. If you care to spring for the gold nibs, they are supposed to be more flexible. I'm not sure if it's a myth or nor but folklore used to say that you shouldn't let other people use your fountain pen because the nib breaks in to your own writing style. It sounds like an awful good reason to prevent some hamfisted philistine from scratching away with your prized scribing tool but I seriously doubt the pen has a memory. For anyone wanting to try making their own quill pen, if you're ever in Vallejo CA, I'll be happy to give you a macaw feather or two. If you're shopping for feathers, I would suggest wing feathers over tail feathers. Wing feathers take much higher loads than tailfeathers and the shaft is thicker and heavier as a result. Unless of course, you are a gold nibbed aficionado, then for sure you'll want the improved flexibility of a tailfeathered quill. Just don't let anyone use it after it conforms to your writing style. I'll add an endorsement, I have one out of the first batch and it's a great and versatile bike. Because of the wide range of people it will fit, it can be used for guests as well. Most bikes won't be quite as flexible in regards to sizes of riders it will fit. Ray Vallejo CA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: book of possible interest to Rivendell riders
I'd like to add another thought to this discussion, it has to do with public radio vs mainstream corporate media. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, we have a couple great public radio stations that play a very diverse mix of programming. The hosts bring their own tastes and flavors to the audience, they give in depth history on bands and musicians, they sometimes have live acts in the studio. They keep the audience aware of small clubs, local venues and obscure genres of music that just doesn't exist in corporate media. Instead of hearing THE one cut from a record that the corporation wants to be a hit. I know a lot of people are fond of some of the streaming services and think they get a good exposure to varied artists, and on some level they do. Where I find them lacking is they don't dig to deep. There's something about an individual who is passionate about a chosen genre and how they bring exposure and education to the listening audience. The sterility of a streaming digital service will never rival that sort of listening experience. Re: [RBW] Re: book of possible interest to Rivendell riders
Patrick et al, One thing that vinyl used to add, and I can't say if it does today, is the element of listening to an entire side or both sides of an album. Add some friends to the mix and you pass around the album cover, read the liner notes and anything else the band or producers had to say about the making of the recording. It involved a level of social interaction that doesn't exist while wearing earbuds. It required an attention span that involved listening to more than one cut. Music today is very convenient but most people don't listen to more than one song by a given artist. I confess to still owning and listening to vinyl, on vintage tube gear no less. The sound quality drwarfs anything available on a compressed format but it really loses in the convenient column. [RBW] Re: Advice on Choosing a New Rivendell Appaloosa, Hillborne or Clem
Given that you already have a Romulus, the Sam will be closer to that than the other two. There is another option that would allow both you and your wife to use the same bike, get on the list for one of the Roscoe Mtn Mixte. As of yesterday, they had five people committed and wanted eight to make the next run. Given the choice of the three bikes you are considering, the Appaloosa is about as versatile of a bike as you could ask for. I've never had a bike that I thought would fit too large of a tire but I've had plenty that I wished would fit something larger. I think you can key off the 55m Cheviut for sizing, seat tube is within a half centimeter and the top tube length is about the same.and it takes pretty fat tires, a fair bit fatter than the Chev. [RBW] Helpful resources for building a bike at home?
For decades I owned a Park professional shop stand and a few years ago I sold it in an effort to clear up some space. I don't miss it a bit. I don't build as many bikes as I used to but still build some and do lots of maintenance. I would buy a bench mount stand if I ever bought another stand. Same Pro quality clamp but they can be mounted to a bench or a post. Good way to free up some floor space and just slide it into the collar when you need it. I also like the VAR ceiling hooks, does anyone know of a source for those? They could live in my carport, hung up out of the way. [RBW] Re: OT: dual monitor question
A few years back I was looking for a flat screen tv to view some of my photos. I took my laptop with me to a shop with dozens of tvs and told the salesman what I was doing. I hooked my computer up to a couple dozen different tvs. The picture quality BY FAR was best on plasma screens. The difference was so remarkably obvious I would never consider an LED or LCD. Screen for my use. The color on the plasma was better by leaps and bounds, the resolution was fluid and natural where as the color on the others was harsh and unnatural, the definition of images on the plasma was perfect. On the others it was harsh, the lines were jagged and very unnatural. I don't know how this would translate to documents but my guess is that a plasma screen would be far less fatiguing to work on. Re: [RBW] Re: New tires, perhaps?
If you go back and look at the original pics that Leah posted, you can see brake wear at the spokes and see the eyelets pulling away from the rim. I don't know how much wear that rim has but if the sidewalls are worn enough to cause the sidewalls to bulge at the spoke holes then it's a pretty well worn rim. If the spokes bulging and the eyelets pulling are an indication of too much tension or a defective rim then a message to the manufacturer might be in order. Rims are consumable and it's possible it lived a useful life. Several years of hard braking on downhills seems pretty reasonable. If it was a new wheel and this happened in the first year of use then that would seem premature. Using a bike for everyday transportation assumes some level of maintenance and replacement of consumables. Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot touring?
I've had a couple bikes that I used clamp on water bottle cages on. They used to come with clamps that looked very similar to cable guide clamps but had a little dimple instead of a channel. I used them from the early 70s up through the late 90s. They were the only thing I used when frames lacked water bottle braze-ons and I used them to supplement a bike that only had one set of h2o bosses. I ever had an issue with them moving and if you put a thin layer of tape under them, they won't mar your finish. The tires might not pick up as much detritus once they get a little scuffed. Hopefully. Your encounter with the fellow at the bike shop made for an interesting juxtaposition. [RBW] Re: Tires for HHH tandem
Tandems have some ratty significant advantages over singles in terms of headwinds, crosswinds, downhills and general cruising. A sturdier tire will not handicap general riding, especially on the cruiser/bomber type tandem the HHH will be. The tandem I've owned for many years has both a caliper and a drum brake, making fixing rear flats a fair amount more of a hassle than on a typical single. Personally, I would opt for a 55-60mm tirefrom a company like Schwalbe over a Compass tire. I definitely would avoid the extra light casing compass tires for just about any tandem. I think you are entering the territory of diminishing returns. Ask any stoker how much they feel bumps on the rear of the tandem. They are just subjected to significantly higher loads than a sporty single. Even on old Schwinn cruiser tandems with stock Schwinn cruiser tires, you could really get moving with two very average riders. My humble opinion would suggest a tire more in line with the design of the HHH. Ray Vallejo CA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Grant's Other Book
Hmmm, perhaps years ago when the book was written, Skinner may have been misunderstood but in today's world he is widely regarded (relatively speaking) as bringing the practice of operant conditioning to the mainstream practice of working with animals and people with extreme learning disabilities. You can thank two of his phd students for that. Keller and Marion Breland left their studies to open ABE which trained thousands of animals for all sorts of work. If you ever saw a dancing chicken at a fair or a pig in a Purina commercial, it was likely trained at ABE. Bob Bailey was an employee of theirs and later married Marion after Keller passed. Bob Bailey still speaks publicly on occasion and is well worth seeing if you get the opportunity. He worked for the military prior to joining ABE and worked marine mammals, birds etc... prior to the development of guided misses they trained pigeons to peck at a screen to keep missles on course, Ravens to fly into buildings to steal top secret papers, dolphins to place electronic jamming devices on enemy ships and much more. Marion eventually returned to her studies and went on to apply their training principles to children with autism as well as other disorders. Until I just read that Skinner was misunderstood, it never crossed my mind, then again, I've read some of his work but never encountered much in the way of hearsay. No matter how cognizant you are of the tenets of operant conditioning, Pavlov is always on your shoulder. Re: [RBW] New tires, perhaps?
Leah, Not to be devils advocate, but if you are using your bike for everyday transportation and or recreation, it makes good sense to have a second bike. I've ever been reliant on a shop for my repairs and maintenance but there have been many occasions where I was leaving for work and either had a flat or something that I forgot to deal with the previous day and was able to just grab another bike. Set them up a bit differently. I'm setting up my Roscoe to be a bit more of a workhorse than other bikes. Like a good attorney, you will slowly develop your case so that it becomes so logical and makes such perfect sense that anyone would see how obvious it is that you need another bike.
