I have the same thing happening fairly often, although I'm running a much older version (but also on XP SP3). If I just go away and let it run, it usually does finish eventually but it may take half an hour or more. If I'm impatient, I force it closed -- and so far have not seen any serious permanent damage to my files, although the display layout tends to change if I do this. My best guess, and it IS just a guess, is that TB is doing some cleanup housekeeping, since I do have a number of "cleanup on exit" options checked. It doesn't bother me frequently, since I leave TB running in a virtual machine on a Linux host 24/7 and only close it down to reboot after updates to either the guest (no more after today!) or the host. -- Best regards, Jimmailto:j...@jimkyle.com Using The Bat! v4.2.36.4 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 3 on VirtualBox 4.2.18 under Xubuntu 12.04.3 with AntiSpamSniper Version 3.2.4.5 Current version is 6.1.8 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

I, roo, filter most messages using Common Folders, and my replies used to be rejected by some servers because they were sent from the "wrong" account. I never thought of moving from one outbox to another, however. Someone on this list told me about the "Account" macro that can be used in the templates for each folder, and presumably for each personality although I've never set up multiple personalities, just multiple accounts. It can also be used in the templates of address book entries, including groups. This makes account selection completely automatic, with no need for me to keep track of any of these details. Since their home page is clear that the program syncs things via The Cloud, it would require all machines involved to connect via the internet, which might (let me emphasize MIGHT) be a security risk. For more than seven years now, I've run my copy of The Bat! in a way that allows me to access it from any workstation on my home-office LAN; that's by running it in a virtual machine using Oracle's VirtualBox virtualization program, and accessing it via the Remote Desktop protocol. Only machines on my local network can access it. This means I have only one copy of TB! and it is running 24/7, checking for new mail every 7 minutes. My solution might not be acceptable in your case, since if one of you were actually using TB! at any given instant, the other would not be able to connect until the first person hung up the RDP connection. (It's possible to configure RDP to allow multiple connections, but would be best to leave it at the default single-connect-only setting because two people trying to type at once would simply create a mess). Several years ago, I used an open-source program similar to PC Anywhere, called UltraVNC, that allowed my customers to connect to my system over the internet, with the connection encrypted with a key known only to me and built into the UltraVNC client I made available to the customers. This gave me full access to their system but under their control. If it's still around, you could use this to allow each laptop to connect to the desktop via UltraVNC, from anywhere at all, but again it would be single-user at a time. I did some more searching on the drive that holds TB; it's not the system drive itself but another, larger one. I found a couple of copies of the whole TB directory, stemming from long-ago disasters, and one of them held three *.TLX files. One of them was the AM version; the others are named ACCENT.TLX and CORRECT.TLX. Apparently the last time I installed TB, some 5 or 6 years ago, I somehow failed to get the spell checker fully functional although enough of it did get in to provide me the squiggly red line beneath unrecognized words. I copied all three over to the active directory where the international pack had put all the others, re-started TB, and everything now seems to work properly or at least as I would expect. I can add words, both as words to be accepted and as words to be corrected, and they persist from day to day. The only question I have left involves the format of TLX files; I'd like to find a help file or article that exposes their details. They appear to be plain text, one word to a line, and entries in the WinXP registry tell TB which of them to use -- but they have a few mysteries, and I always want to know what goes on behind the curtain (as in "Undocumented DOS," a book I co-authored some 23 years ago). I'll start by saying that all of this reply deals only with POP3 access to the server; I do not use IMAP at all. I want my messages stored only on my local machines, not retained on a server outside my control -- and I do use a gmail account, configured to download via POP3 at regular intervals. I have three virtual folders: unread, flagged, and parked, in addition to five account folders and almost 200 common folders that form a filing system for my messages. The five accounts connect to three actual mail servers: one from my ISP, one from my web presence provider, and one from gmail. The other accounts allow for different formatting of outgoing messages. All except for the ISP account are checked for incoming mail at intervals ranging from 5 to 10 minutes, staggered to minimize the number of times more than one is being checked at the same time. The common folders form a tree with a small number of general categories at the top, more specific categories in some of those, and specific correspondents at the lowest level. When incoming messages arrive, the Sorting Office in TB! moves all that it can recognize to the appropriate common folder. At the same time, the "unread" virtual folder collects the address of each new message within the tree of common folders. Those not recognized by the Sorting Office remain in the inbox of the appropriate account so that I can move them manually, and they too appear in the "unread" virtual folder, which is the only one I display in the message list (selected by tabs at the bottom of the message list pane). I also use the "sound" properties of each account folder and some common folders to help me identify the sources of messages that are of most interest to me. Once the accounts are set up, all this is automatic, and it's why I continue to use TB! even though I have to do so in a virtual machine since I no longer boot directly into Windows. When I create a new common folder, there's an area in its property pages to select which virtual folders watch it. If I create another virtual folder, its properties include filter criteria and a list of actual folders that it will watch. My Sorting Office filters always just direct messages to one of the common folders. And after these initial setup steps, TB! does the rest automagically. Hope this helps! Is there such a possibility? How about using the Sorting Office to put a flag into the Memo field for incoming messages, then in the reply template looking for that flag and setting the editor to use accordingly? Here's a test filter that I created, using an incoming message that I knew to have an HTML version: TB! Then in your reply template, use the macro to test the Memo field for "IS_HTML" and that should do it... Of course, if you already use the Memo field for something else this would not work. I don't use it at all here, so it's just another feature being ignored... Restoring an account
I run TB in a VirtualBox virtual machine, since it requires Windows and my systems all run on Linux these days. Late last week, something damaged the virtual disk file for that machine, making it unusable and thus losing nearly a year's worth of mesages and all of my configuration data. Fortunately I had a copy of the virtual disk file, made last August after I became suspicious that my LAN had been invaded (through my own security lapse, not via any vulnerability), and was able to mount that one as the E: drive on a new WinXP VM. After setting the mail directory from "default" to "E:\The Bat!" I was able to recover all the common folders, as well as one (inactive) account -- but the other two accounts did not appear in the new installation. I've verified that their folders are present in the directory, but have forgotten (if I ever knew) how to get them into TR's awareness. One of the two is the one that contains my copies of all the forum messages, so I cannot search for the data. Meanwhile I'm using Thunderbird on another Linux box to stay in touch... Can someone tell me how to import/activate those accounts? Many thanks! -- Jim Kyle Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

I copied all settings from the old account (except, of course, for the server addresses, user id, and passwords) to the new and now that the name server changes have propagated somewhat, am receiving mail through the new server. Dragging the folder back up to its proper level should put things back as theyy were before the move, but you may find that initially all the sub-folders seem to be empty. I had that experience when I copied my installation from one machine to another. However I discovered that when I clicked on any of the "empty" folders, it immediately was re-populated. Apparently there are internal indexes that don't get built when moving the mail system, but do get built on the first attempt to access the folder. It was quite disconcerting at first, but all turned out well once I had found out how to trigger the rebuilding action! One caution: instead of deleting the present top-level structure, I would simply rename it to something like "My Doicuments\tb.new" so that you don't lose the messages that it contains. Nothing at all, since the filters for routing those messages are associated with another account. I could move all of them to "Common" and it would probably work, but that introduced other problems when I tried it several years ago with a much older version of TB. > I see nothing strange. Whatever account has focus is active. If a > common or virtual folder has focus, no account is active. That exactly describes what I see here, but the program did not act this way with the older version that I used for years. The old action was that this checkbox determined which account would be used for server access and had nothing to do with focus. It defaulted to the account checked off as the "mailto" one, but could be changed manually from the pop-up. The current action makes it essentially useless since it offers no information not already on the screen because of the focus. Incidentally, I looked at the pop-up while typing this reply, which is working in my "tbudlacct" account. None of the three is checked. The reason for having a separate account for tbudl is to have no numbering of replies when messaging here. My normal account does number the replies, but folk objected to that happening on the list -- and since numbering is controlled at the account level, not by the template in use, the separate account was necessary. > If you are creating "accounts" that will neither send nor receive > mail, I have to wonder if your purpose might be better served by > instead creating folders under your one account that actually sends > and receives. The tbudlacct must be able to send, but it need not receive since the filter on the normal account will direct incoming messages to it properly. The problem is that messages to other recipients are sent from it with no warning, unless I check the active account item before replying. If there are now macros that I can add to templates that will force my desired routing, I'd definitely be willing to use them! That is, all traffic to or from tbudl should use tbudlacct while all other traffic should use the account "web" (the third account is for a service on different servers that I no longer track daily, but merely check manually every week or two). Active account question
Hello Bats!, I'm having a strange problem: from time to time, my active account choice gets changed for no apparent reason. I have three separate accounts in my installation but intend for only one of them to be used for contacting my mail server. I check that one off on the "active account" item of the system tray pop-up menu, and have it checked as the default account for mailto actions. Neither of the others has the default account checkbox checked, nor are they set for checking automatically at any time. However, after TP has been running for a while, suddenly incoming and outgoing traffic is being handled by one of the two other accounts, and when I look at the systray pop-up, none of the accounts is checked as active -- or, sometimes, the checkmark has moved to the third account! I move it back manually, and a few hours later this happens again. Since my sorting office has most of the filters defined only for the "standard" account, this bollixes my automatic sorting of messages. I have to manually move each new or sent message to the appropriate common folder. Is anyone else experiencing such a strange situation, or have any idea what might be going on? Furthermore, why do i even have to check those options? I start from the top down. That is, I first set up the templates for my accounts (I only use three accounts, and one of those is for archiving old messages so it's never used for sending or receiving, hence does not need any templates). Then, if I want the same template in both accounts, I set it up as a Common Template and in its Options pane, check off both accounts under "Use In." This lets me omit that template from both the accounts. The next level down is at the "Group" stage. I have several groups of users that get specialized templates, stored under the "Group." Finally, there are individual templates at the Address Book level, and apply only to the specific user. When a template is to be used, the program looks first at the Address Book level for one specific to the recipient. If there's not one, it looks at the groups to which that recipient belongs. If there's still not one, it looks in the Common Templates if the account is checked, and finally at the Account properties. The first time it finda a template, it's the one used. The only ones that have to be there are those in the Account properties. All the rest are optional, letting you select special treatment for individual users, for user groups, or everyone. In my case, most of the template properties provided are left blank. Only a few Address Book templates are used, a couple of groups get special treatment, and most of my Quick Templates are specific to one account or the other although in all of them I have "Use In" checked for both because I created most of them before learning about the Common Templates. I don't use the QTINCLUDE macro a lot, but it's nice to have available. I hope this helps a bit; I agree that the documentation leaves much to be desired, mostly because so much of what does exist is obsolete and no longer valid. There is a conventional online forum, but my experience has been that the mailing lists are so much more helpful that I've not logged into that forum for many weeks now and when I do, I don't find much of interest. One of the reasons for lack of documentation is the lack of a common language; the user base here is the most internationalized of all the programs I use. I understand that if I were able to read Russian I could find more information on line (since that's the native language of the developers). This is a problem for many other programs as well; that's why the mailing lists continue to be the most reliable data sources. -- Jim Kyle Using The Bat! v4.0.34 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600Service Pack 3 with AntiSpamSniper Version 3.0.1.2 Current version is 4.1.11 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

I've been using AntiSpam Sniper for nearly a year now, through several major upgrades, and it catches almost everything that comes my way. Since I do commercial database recovery and more than half of my business arrives through Email I cannot depend on whitelisting alone, and I have to make my address available on my web site -- but the Sniper still does a great job. I still check my Junk mail folder often, before deleting its content, and found it quite helpful to sort that message list (and just that list, no others) on the "To" address column. This makes it easy to check my two published addresses for possibly good mail, and lets me skip over all the spam that's addressed to others but has me on a BCC list... -- Jim Kyle Using The Bat! v3.85.03 on Windows 98 4.10 Build A Current version is 3.99 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re[2]: Antispam Sniper
There's a filter rule in the Sniper that's disabled by default, to classify as spam any message with attached image files. If you enable it, you should get 100% rejection. Unfortunately it will also reject any messages from friends or family that have attached images, unless those senders are in the "friends" list. Since some of my customers (not in the friends list) attach image files of screen shots when asking for assistance, I can't use this rule -- but it should be quite helpful to most folk. -- Jim Kyle Using The Bat! v3.85.03 on Windows 98 4.10 Build A Current version is 3.95.06 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Connecvtion Center hangs
Hello tbudl, Starting yesterday, my copy of TB! seems to hang with the Connection Center active. That is, it never closes down after checking my two accounts for new traffic. It does bring in all the messages, and I'm able to filter them properly, but it never finishes its tasks. When I attempt to quit TB!, I get the warning box that tasks are still active, and the Abort button does nothing to force an exit. My backup strategy, using an external backup program, requires that I shut down TB! before the backup program runs. Last night I used the "Terminate application" capability of TaskInfo to force the shutdown but I'm concerned that this may leave TB! databases in some undefined state and make things worse. Any ideas? -- Jim Kyle mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Using The Bat! v3.85.03 on Windows 98 4.10 Build A Current version is 3.85.03 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

This brings up the list of possible views, and I select "threaded" from it. That appears to set some partially hidden property of the single folder, without having any effect on the others. Originally, when I left a folder after changing anything about its view (such as the view itself or the column widths) TB would prompt me asking whether to save the changes.
