Re: [313] carl craig at cranbrook
was there also... unfortunately, i sat on the right side of the auditorium, right next to one of the surround speakers. the best place to be was directly in the middle, as carl was controlling the feeds sent to each speaker and to get the full impact of the effect you needed to be in the middle. i forget who/what exactly was the inspiration, but if i remember correctly it had to do with an installation that had been done over in europe somewhere. the installation featured different feeds going to speakers placed within a venue, so that the listener created his own mix by moving around the area. i believe carl was controlling the feeds from recloose and his own gear - not sure about the drummer. anyone remember more details? take care, linda g mailing list http://www.onelist.com/community/detroitscience science office 313-534-7420 science fax 313-534-5155 mobile 313-790-7300 pager 800-200-5176 www.detroitscience.com was at that gig too...It was Carl, the drummer that he worked with on Innerzone Orchestra and Recloose (DJ Bubbilicious at the time). To be honest, I don't remember it being terribly enjoyable but it was definitely interesting and innovative. A lecture on Techno by Motor's Adriel was cool. It definitely preceded the innerzone lp and was a testament to Carl's creativity... Re: [313] oliver chesler/"summer's lust"
first of all - quote ppl properly. this was from someone else, not me: I know he (Oliver Chesler) did a great job clearing the dancefloor (in fact the whole venue) when he played in Detroit at the "by the bridge" space two years ago. furthermore, i was excited to see oliver. i like his work and was looking forward to the live pa. and yes - it was oliver. i don't have the exact date of the party, i would have to go back in my old fliers. the promoter who threw the party is a close friend of mine, which is why i have the skinny. i'm sure that oliver does a wicked live pa - he just didn't this time.it's no big deal to me, i was just passing along some information. if you forwarded the previous email to oliver that's perfectly fine with me, and i'm sure that you will pass this one along as well. i have no problem with that, because i only post what i know to be the circumstances. and since you are going to forward this, i'm sure, please let oliver know that i still have his hat and the invitation to drink jaeger with me anytime still holds. now, let me ask you an intelligent question since you have seen oliver live - how many people does it take to do the live pa? since he does get so into the vocals and really puts on a show, i would assume it would take at least 2 or 3 people total to do his tracks proper justice. maybe it was too difficult to pack up all of his gear and take it on the road, especially to an unknown warehouse venue in detroit? only oliver knows for sure. my point is simply this - the gig was booked as a live pa to the promoter. the promoter did not get a live pa - he got a track act to dat. and yes - it was his brother who came out to detroit with him, i met and talked with both of them. finally, there is no need for careless insults. please do a little bit of homework before calling me a "hip-hop kiddie". i quote "Anyone who's into hip-hop has gotta be a loser anyway. oliver chesler/"summer's lust" party
I know he (Oliver Chesler) did a great job clearing the dancefloor (in fact the whole venue) when he played in Detroit at the "by the bridge" space two years ago. little known fact: his supposed "live" gig was in fact a track act to a dat. the keyboard was just a prop. oliver was just using a microphone. the promoter was told it was going to be a live pa and found out the truth at the airport. after his set i dragged him outside and made him drink jaeger with me and asked for an explanation. he said that it was "too hard" to do a live pa. wtf? now, remember the set that mike clark played after oliver's little charade? old skool hip hop dj skills matched with banging techno and house... take care, linda g Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Re: [313] St.Andy's Next Saturday...
I think this is pretty disturbing party. Very enigmatic stuff. Some of these kids are playing live for the first time, and some of them might be >really fantastic. >To me it seems like a fucking awesome idea that's gotten into the wrong >hands. well, i know the promoter pretty well, and one of the reasons that he was attempting an all live-pa event was because most of the guys on his label, emp records, play out live all the time. he decided that there were prolly a lot of up-and-coming producers that deserved a chance, and started working on the concept of an all live pa event. different concept, could work - or it couldn't. What made the promoters of this turn it into candy rave massive? Are all >these tweaked out highschoolers even going to care that something like >this has neer been pulled off in detroit history? they're promoting this event just like they promote all of their other events. "gotta catch 'em all" or "jiggly puff" didn't come to the lists' attention because they were exactly that - candy raver parties. he wanted to do something different and in a legal venue, hence st. andy's, esp because of all of the gear that will be there. his production on the night should be alright, and he does actually give a shit about the kids. adding kevin and juan to the lineup was kinda an afterthought to the live concept, to appeal to a broader and possibly older crowd that would like to see kevin and juan, but not at a dirty illegal rave. to tell the truth, if it was at an illegal venue i don't think he would have put kevin and juan on the bill, but going into a legal venue cuts out part of the crowd and therefore he needed to draw in a different segment of the crowd. as for juan showing up, they had lunch yesterday and juan is paid up and has said that he has every intention of being there. we'll see what happens with flights the day of, though. i'll swing through and check it out, i don't know if they're planning on recording the sets. g mailing list http://www.onelist.com/community/detroitscience science office 313-534-7420 science fax 313-534-5155 mobile 313-790-7300 pager 800-200-5176 www.detroitscience.com Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
RE: [313] DEMF & 'Hurt Feelings'
i say the 313 gets together and opens our own club. that way we can be the >hot club owners who take over the festival after he gets sick of it. or >maybe we can leave it up to linda, who definately knows wassup in the club >life... lordy lordy. be thankful that you DON'T know wassup in this lovely world called clubland. you'd prolly go nuts. any rich ppl out there that wanna but me a club and give me shitload of money to book artists only with integrity and true love of the music? didn't think so. of course, the next best thing would be to import me an educated, clubgoing crowd so that i wouldn't ever have to be fiscally responsible to a bottom line. let me tell you one of linda g's rules of life: "to get the 20% you want, you have to deal with 80% bullshit." the 80/20 rule applies to just about everything. i had to give up my dream booking last year because i couldn't even justify it to myself, much less motor. i got thomas heckman to agree to come over and do a live pa, which i think that i prolly would have died happily after. but, i couldn't headline it and be guaranteed a crowd. nor could i tag it onto a night along with a dj that would be a guaranteed draw because the additional cost couldn't be justified. plus, the owners of motor didn't know who he was so if they didn't know... you get the idea? it SUCKS. ok, i'll stop this minor rant and get outta the club for the night... by the way where's my t-shirt linda??? ya gotta come and gettit. take care, linda g mailing list http://www.onelist.com/community/detroitscience science office 313-534-7420 science fax 313-534-5155 mobile 313-790-7300 pager 800-200-5176 www.detroitscience.com Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

ummm, ok - is anyone else not quite sure about these numbers? 750,000 seems to be a super high number to me, especially considering that we parked less than 2 blocks away all weekend. how many people come down to the fireworks every year? i thought that number was around a million, and when there are that many people downtown it's packed crazy can't move can't park can't breath. trust me, i'm not dissing the attendance - it was amazing - but i'm just wondering if these numbers aren't a little high? g well, from what I understand from the article in the newspaper this morning, the city isnt allowed to count officially...but the estimated figure was 900,000 plus. Hiya, all Heres the skinny on the 313 list event I had to get a few things sorted out and boy, has it been a coupla interesting days. Im changing slightly the programming of the club. From 9 pm until 2 am we will be rocking along as a dance club, and then at 2 am shifting gears to a downtempo chill-out afterhours with food until 5 am. So, this affects the 313 lineup a bit, as we need to schedule sets accordingly. All dance sets in both rooms need to be completed by 2 am and then switch over to eclectic/chill-out. However, I know that we have more than enough music in the collective record crate Because of their set-ups, I need to keep the live pas in the dance room and have them done by 2am. Cyborg k, o-zone and micho have been working on their sets for this for a while and were all tailoring them to specifically dance-floor. Jwan, what is shawns pa like? Could that possibly work as chill? Please let me know also, he will need to coordinate with [EMAIL PROTECTED] for live gear if he in fact can go chill... whos up for a downtempo/chill/ambient set? Paging bvl? We have 6 slots that need to be filled, three in the dance room and three on the deck. I had in the dance room: HYPERVINYL - JWAN ALLEN/SHAWN RUDIMAN - LIVE CYBORG K LIVE IZADE O-ZONE LIVE NOVA DETRONIK LIVE TRISTAN & RYAN And in the front, although the time slots werent set yet these volunteers: GERALD MEIGHEN JOSH EQUINOX SEAN DEASON PHRED HORSEPOWER So, Im asking for help, guys. Who can switch gears and play us some lovely experimental/downtempo sets? Sorry about this at such short notice, its something that came up kinda suddenly. Also, instead of printing out the list of people subbed to both the regular and digest versions of the list Im just going to do a cyberinvite. Hell, print out multiple copies if you want or forward it to friends the more the merrier. Its reaay early/late depending on your point of view so I gotta get a few hours of sleep before Im back in here. Re: [313] age then vs. age now
oh yeah..the graystone ballroombut yer leaving out things like the racist skins, cops showing up cause of fights etc yep, the skins had a house called "the bunker" just a few blocks away, north of michigan ave. but i still wanted to be out there and see all of the different music that the city had to offer and if you were under-age what options did you have? which actually kinda proves the point that if you're underage in detroit your options are very limited... g Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
age then vs. age now
hmmm, well as one of the ppl that started hanging out in downtown detroit when i was 13 i can tell you this much - the focus of the 13-yr-olds that are out and about these days is not the same. yeah, i had fake id by the time that i was 14 but i just wanted to get out and experience - not get out and get messed up. there were a lot of different influences in detroit in the mid & late 80's to absorb - punk, ska, goth, new wave, whatever - and we went everywhere. anyone on the list ever hit the graystone(all ages, remember lotsa jolt cola)? bookies? alcove? todd's? city club/liedernacht(wow, anyone seen sterling lately?) oh boy - even homesick night @ industry? hey, if there was music i could dance to i was there... i'm sure that other drugs were around, but weed and alcohol were the primaries that i saw with coke and acid as secondaries - not e, g, k or any of the other letters that are doing so much damage to kids today. personally, i didn't even really start drinking until i was 25 - ahhh, please no smart-ass comments about me making up for lost time since then. so yeah - kids will always be out running around when they shouldn't. but in the time period where i was 13-18 (1983-1988) there also weren't giant parties where drugs were readily available to underage kids every weekend. yep, i really really really like to get my drink on and find a speaker stack. but i was also there sober for years. most kids get into the rave scene from a friend - their "rave momma" or "rave poppa" - and often goes to their first party and does their first pill on the same night. i've been introduced to countless kids this way: "hey, i want you to meet ___. it's her first party and she's rolling for the first time." by and large, someone doesn't just go to a rave alone for the first time, and if their "rave momma" shows them the way that it's done and that's how they're introduced to the scene it might be a while - if ever - before they realize that they don't need the drugs. there really is nothing safe and legal for those under 18 to do in detroit. raves, fake ids or house parties are pretty much the options. so is there a need in detroit for a legal all-ages club without a liquor license that could be open all night? sure. will it happen? not with the midnight curfew in the city for those under 18, and not with the casinos coming into the city. there is a lot of pbs (politics and bullshit) that many are not aware of unless you're involved in the scene from the standpoint of trying to do things fully legally. g mailing list http://www.onelist.com/community/detroitscience science office 313-534-7420 science fax 313-534-5155 mobile 313-790-7300 pager 800-200-5176 Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Re: (313) DEMF After Hours
linda, please get laurent garnier to play at science. He's a sick dj from what i've heard and it would be great to hear him afterhours. i wish it were that easy. trying to tag onto some of the talent that will be here is harder than it would seem. he is amazing, and the set that he's doing for demf is actually live with his band. i've been trying to get him to detroit for over 2 years now, he had a really bad experience the last time he was here. a drive-by shooting happened at a party and the person who was shot was 2 people in front of laurent. i talked to him about it last year at wmc and have been bugging his agent - club is much different than rave, obviously. we'll see, sometimes spur-of-the-moment things happen, too. g Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
djs for may 313 5/26
hiya, all - who else is coming into town? who from detroit is staying in town? i have part of the lineup set: NOVA (WOMB.COM/MIAMI) DETRONIK (SYNTHETIC/DETROIT) LIVE IZADE (CHICAGO) O-ZONE (4TH DIMENSION/DETROIT) LIVE CYBORG K (DETROIT) LIVE SEAN DEASON (MATRIX RECORDS/DETROIT) for those of you that were here for 12/18, the entry area has been redone: the outdoor deck opens directly off of it and we are constructing a free-pour bar in between the deck and the entry area. i'm designing and building the dj booth behind the green bar, same place where the djs were spinning last time. the sound system in the main dance room has actually been upgraded twice since then. of course, i'm not going to be happy until the walls are made of titanium bass bins... :^) otto had made a suggestion that we do a list-only bbq out on the deck in the sunshine, what are the feelings on that? take care, linda g mailing list http://www.onelist.com/community/detroitscience science office 313-534-7420 science fax 313-534-5155 mobile 313-790-7300 pager 800-200-5176 Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Re: (313) DEMF After Hours
Perhaps some of you out of towners may want to experience some of Detroit after hours. Do any of the Europeans in particular wish to go to some of the more rootsy, less hyped, multicultrual gigs as apposed to the 'mee toos' ravey type places or am I off base here. we're figuring out what we're going to do for afterhours, since we'll have the deck open and we'll be open at least until 5 am. the other bars have to close at 2 am, so it'll be interesting to see what happens. unless the schedule changes drastically, it seems that there will be a buncha ppl that will be looking for house & techno on sunday night starting at 8 pm. we've been discussing opening up on sunday night and staying open until 8 am. john aquaviva is playing at motor, but at the most that will take 1200 people and they have to close at 2 am. tp's night is up at tonic in pontiac (approx 30 min north of hart plaza) but that also has to close around 2 am. so... we're thinking that it will be a good idea for us to do a sunday night. we're 15 minutes from downtown, all expressway so it's easy to get to. what do y'all think? g Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Re: (313) December 313 List Party archives
hiya, miss holly - could someone please email me the lineup from this event? i'm trying to figure out who some of the sets are, and would like to put them in chronological order so the night is as close to recreated as possible... the intended lineup was as follows: dance room 9pm - 11pm brooks mosher & sutekh 11pm - 12ammatt macqueen & david siska 12am - 1am horsepower & aaron bennett 1am - 2:30am derek plaslaiko & craig gonzales & leslie rollins 2:30am entry 9pm - 10:30pm otto & lowlands 10:30pm - 11:30pm rob. 11:30pm - 12:30am phred 12:30am - 1:30ammatrix 1:30am - 2:30am emanuel vs. chris 2:30am ? now, i chickenscratched the names/times on the dats themselves or on the stickers on the dat cases, so josh would have that information as long as everything hasn't gotten mixed up in the transfering process. also, i know that gerald threw down in the big room after 2:30am, rob. never played in the front room but ian dinsmor did, phred went back on the decks in the front and closed out the night there... i also found another dat here from the night. i can figure out the progression if josh gets the dats back to me... g mailing list http://www.onelist.com/community/detroitscience science office 313-534-7420 science fax 313-534-5155 mobile 313-790-7300 pager 800-200-5176 __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

hiya, shannon & list - the st. regis isn't downtown proper, but i can get you in there at $69 usd room & tax per night. i also work with the atheneum in greektown, but for that weekend i don't think that they'll give me any break on the rates. the st. regis is about 10 minutes taxi ride north of hart plaza (where the fest is) so it's not bad. let me know, i just checked with the st. regis and they said that at this point they weren't in a sold-out and that they should be able to hold that rate for me. take care, linda g mailing list http://www.onelist.com/community/detroitscience science office 313-534-7420 science fax 313-534-5155 mobile 313-790-7300 pager 800-200-5176 From: "shannon" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "detroit science" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: (313) det elec fest/313-list event Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2000 07:05:59 -0500 From: "detroit science" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > any other questions about it that i can try to sort out for people? at this point i'm just looking for suggestions about where to stay. we were hoping for somewhere downtown proper, but everyone's rates seem prohibitively high. best quote we've been able to get for the little marriot (not renaissance center proper) was about $110 a night. that's icky. thx. shannon by collapsing concept into matter, & the mental into the material, the rekkid [sic] functions in 2 parallel systems: as a concept visualized on vinyl & as punishing frequencies, orchestrally arranged Techno, sepulchral & frosted, a Rhythmachine of planetary information. --kodwo eshun "synthetic fiction/electronic thought" _more brilliant than the sun: adventures in sonic fiction_ __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

the person who is doing the show has to be well informed themselves. ive heard holly & craig botch track i.d's beyond belief on X2K. to the point where i just sat and looked at the radio in disbelief. true. that's one of the reasons that i'm doing web research for them like forwarding josh's interview with kit clayton - so that they can get better info. i'm willing to take some of my time to work with the _current_ situation at hand and see if i can help improve it. maybe i can't, but for each of the cds that we're suggesting i'm also going to give them some bio info. if helping them is within my sphere of influence, i'm gonna do it. if they are going to drown quality 313 classics & new tracks with >trance and Basement Jaxx whats the use??? i'd rather think of it as getting one or two tracks in the mix... then three or four... and so on. if it gives even one artist some airplay or even one listener goes out and buys a cd then it's better than it was. like i mentioned earlier, the more exposure that they have to (our opinion!!!) music and good background info the more chances of it getting played and talked about. think about *detroit technology* and tell me how 89x feels about >our music... u. that's a can o worms that i'm not going to get into - suffice to say that there was a lot behind the scenes going on. i tend to be a little more pragmatic and deal with the current situation. yeah, that was a bad situation - but here's where we are now. they are actively working with us on saturdays now - and my focus at science on saturdays is on local labels, dj collectives, etc. up and coming artists that would never get the exposure otherwise. this is a new direction for their show and it'll evolve. this saturday, for example is a bang tech 12 release party. who? precisely - 4 local djs that have thrown parties and are working on a record label. the backing music to the 60-second radio spot is theirs, and craig and holly have the cd to play this sat on the show and bio info on all of the djs and the label. it'll be some trial and error but i believe it'll be worthwhile for all involved. here are saturdays coming up: 3/4 out of the box: boomer "omegaman" reynolds, michael geiger, keith kemp 3/11 pisces party: mike taylor-live techno set, ben wu, beau gangnier, gary g 3/18 dialect records release party: ryan hines, derrick ramirez aka dez, mike ransom, mike santiago 3/25 d. wynn 4/1 adversary records: recoil, sherry castro, pirahna, skurge 4/8 aries party: *attention* detroit-based aries djs - email me 4/15 tba 4/24 aphasic press 4/29 women on wax 5/6 tba 5/13 taurus party: again, taurus djs email me 5/20 chisel records 6/17 tp presents "a real right night @ science" give you an idea of what i'm up to? g mailing list http://www.onelist.com/community/detroitscience science office 313-534-7420 science fax 313-534-5155 mobile 313-790-7300 pager 800-200-5176 __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Re: (313) 89x suggestions
Doesnt this raise the question of why, if they are interested in dance music, 89x doesnt have a turntable in the studio? Can't they afford a turntable? If craig is interested in playing dance music why doesnt he bring his own turntable into the studio. Why does someone have a radio show which plays dance music when they dont even know what to play? Shouldnt a dj know what to play? If 89x are interested in dance music they should commit to it by providing turntables and knowleadgeable djs ... sounds like they're really interested in something else. Let craig do his own homework and decide what to play - might be interesting to see what his taste leads him to. good points - since i know a lot more about the circumstances of the request let me try to elaborate. as always, remember, all of us started somewhere... take a step back if you will and think about what it was like to be out on the dancefloor, not knowing what tracks are being played. at some point you decided that you wanted to know more. me for example - i'm not a trainspotter - i know djs, not labels and producers and tracks etc etc. i know how to organize and make things happen, and y'all need people like me to convince sports bar owners to hand over the creative control of their venues so that places like science can happen. :^) and your role and influence on the scene that we love is different than mine as well. similarly, craig is the marketing and promotions director for 89x and the x2k show just kinda happened - it wasn't a conscious decision of 89x to branch off into dance music. the only reason that he has the show is BECAUSE he's the marketing and promotions director. the programming director leaves the content strictly up to him and his co-host holly. but craig doesn't come from a dj background - and he quite frankly doesn't have the time to do a lot of research since his full-time job @ 89x is quite different. that's why he asks for input, and if we can help steer him to good music available on cd maybe the fact that all of the really good stuff is on vinyl will push him to get 89x to spring for tables. i don't know where it will lead to, but unless the foundation is laid we won't know what could happen with the show. and ultimately, yes - craig will decide what to play - but we can influence it. if i give him a list of 20 cds that the 313 list recommends he's gonna go get them and listen and who knows what direction the show will take. does that explain the situation a little better? take care and thanks for the input, linda g mailing list http://www.onelist.com/community/detroitscience science office 313-534-7420 science fax 313-534-5155 mobile 313-790-7300 pager 800-200-5176 __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Re: (313) Detroit Electronic Music Festival and more
This too is a graduation gift to me. I think we talked early about a (313) roundup number 2? yep, that's already on my calendar. since the events in hart plaza are running from noon until midnight, science is the only logical choice for any afterparty events. all of the other bars would have to close @ 2am, which would be impractical. at that point the deck will be open with the second sound system out there, so it should be pretty intense. speaking of sound, you all will be pleased to hear that the new dance system is being installed this week in time for doc martin and king britt fri 2/11/00. probably not as happy as me, but now the audiophiles can stop hassling me. ;^) i'm awaiting the festival lineup so that i can program science's memorial weekend accordingly. to those planning on coming into town, please please please start letting me know NOW about hotel st.regis rooms as i don't know how their vacancies will fare over the holiday weekend. also, my web site is being worked on which will have a 313-event page to archive the 12/18/00 party and also provide links to listmember related sites etc etc etc. as i get closer to completion i will post the requests for info. holly has graciously offered to host the archived sets, and josh will be transfering the dats to the proper format, thank you to all who offered to help. take care, linda g __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
