Yep, it's a virus. One that mutates you from a kick and hi-hat lover to a
bassline and vocals afficionado :-)

It has been passed on to you by Jonny McIntosh and myself through contaminated
313-mails... We too have been infected and are loving every minute of our
disease, which we keep under control by buying huge amounts of vinyl-medication.

:-)))

PS That Boo Williams was released about a year ago.

It's funny, after hosting TP a half dozen times, having Boo out a few
times, and seeing Moodyman and Larry Heard during DEMF, I've gone from
a total experimental techno head to really loving deep house. Is
this some sort of virus?

I played out last saturday night and did my usual 'stuff the crate' 2
hour warm up the night before, just grabbing records that hit me without
thinking too much about it. After I played a kid came up to me and said
DOod excellent! No one plays deep house around here!

Which was pretty funny -- I did play moodyman, and some herbert, and
a few other things with vocals, but I also played Dietrich Schoenemann
and Claude Young. Hmmm...

Re: [313] Re: UR - Hardlife

2001-09-04 Thread stuffed bird
Same anticipation over here :-) As a techno-lover that dug good house turned
into a dedicated house head with a firm love for good techno I was surprised to
hear that housey a cut on ur. For me the original lacked something as well, but
the Aaron Carl mix just blows me away, maybe because it does have that
undefinable techno funk?

The reason why I became more of a house head can be found in the growing number
of loop-based techno that I find increasingly hard to listen to. But that's
another story, and I guess that in the house world it is equally difficult to
find the gems amongst the loads and loads of rubbish pouring out the record
shops each and every week.

I know Ron Mitchell sings the vocals, but I'm not sure about
the production. Sure it's not Mad Mike? There is a vague
similarity between this and his Members of the House stuff.
I have to say its probably the first UR release ever that
I've not actually liked that much, sounds too much like a
Mark Kichen track with those vocals. Timeline was wicked, but
are UR moving in a more house orientated direction??

They have always been on the house-side of things to. Didn't Mad Mike also
recorded some tracks for the submerge related label Happy Tracks. The whol
'X 2 X' series always had this house and jazz feel to them. I don't think
they are making more house-like thing they are just putting out less harder
 techno :)

the chorus: it's an unbelievable house thing, it's unbelievable.

Anyone?

Indeed peepz, take note of what Jonny says, if you're in

New records which are good I reckon: the two new Theo

Larry Heard LP in Ghent and some of that sounds
phenomenal. Snap it up, but
leave a copy for when I get paid please.

On a sad note, will miss Aaliyah. A real RB talent

Detroit's High School for Performing Arts.

Finally, if any Londoners are aware of interesting spaces
(by which I don't
mean some tiny basement of a crap bar) owned/run by party
sympathetic people
that hold around 300, could you drop me a line off list?
Especially in and
around N1, N5, N16 but a good varied range would be cool.
I'm trying to get
a bit of a database together for vague plans.

Cheers,

Jonny.

P.S. I think Prince rocks. And well after Purple Rain,
too.

Re: [313] MUSIC MAN TEN

2001-08-02 Thread stuffed bird
Music Man have lately been putting all their eggs in the Chicago basket...

They released a couple of things from Phuture 303, which was totally uninspired
IMO, hardish acidic techno. And they are about to storm the techno world with a
new Green Velvet LP shortly, which is promising to be huge and a lot different
from his latest stuff. DJ Hell was totally wild about the new material because
of the 80ies feel in it.

Other than that, the MM camp is pretty quiet.

Kenny Larkin and Steve Rachmad both remixed this track, the original is
by A. Faassen and A. D'Onorio (no, I've never heard of them either).
It's pretty typical of what Music Man was doing around that time:
groovy, melodic techno. The remixes are good, I slightly prefer the
hypnotic bouncy feel of Kenny's remix. It's no classic, but you could
certainly do a lot worse as it's pretty solid all around.

I haven't been following Music Man recently (haven't seen any of them

Do you honestly believe that when Underworld made 'Cowgirl' and
'Dubnobasswithmyheadman' that they were aiming to becoming a pop-band? I don't
think so, they were just trying to bring there version of the music we all know
and love: techno. The way they evolved was not the way I liked, so I just
stopped buying their records, not because they lost 'underground-credibility',
but just because I didn't dig what they made.

Point being if I flip through the MAJOR FM radio stations I may pass that
shitty Moby track on a POP station. I'm not going to catch slak or
Elektrostatik EVER on those same stations.

True, just because major FM stations cater the majority of the audience which
would rather hear Moby than Elektrostatic, not because they do not want to
support the underground, but just because they just don't dig the music and
rather hear things they know.

Needless to say, I meet these dumb azz f*ckin promoters from time to time
and consider them mostly a disease. They have no concept whatsoever. They
are just trying to make a buck and be cool at the same time. Throw a bunch
of names on a flyer, add whatever local talent is pandering to you, hire a
bunch of stupid light systems, and voila. Instant success party.

Sorry to burst your underground bubble, but when a promoter asks Derrick May
and Jeff Mills for his party he too is trying to make a buck by putting a bunch
of names on a flyer. He just chose a smaller market which is much easier to
target and is almost surely a success.

Personally
I'd rather shoot myself in the foot than attempt to throw a party of that
caliber.

Well, why don't you get behind the screen and try to throw a different party
then? Don't get me wrong on the previous paragraphs, I do agree with you to a
great extent concerning the big events having no concept and only out to make
money, but that goes for pop as well as techno as any other musical form. I
myself have been throwing parties since 1993, and continue to do so to this
very day with just one thing in mind: fun and music. I haven't gotten a penny
out of it, but the memories and thank you's of my friends have made up for that
in huge fashion. But I do not claim to be underground, I'm just bringing the
music I like to whoever wants to hear it. So stop complaining and just do it!

It was in a recent Autechre interview that they discussed art without a
dissident edge, basically saying that without that propulsion away from the
establishment or from compromise the art isn't really communicating anything
revolutionary or otherwise.

Does art really need to be revolutionary? I don't find Jeff Mills' 'Every Dog'
revolutionary in the least, but for me it is well and truly art. Is it
dissident? Not at all IMO, but it's just good music to my ears, and that's all
that matters.

I think these people (wack promoters) should go get a job at a burger joint
and contribute more to society. I won't tell you what I REALLY think they
should go do...

I do believe that organizing a concert for 1 people and making their day is
a bit more contribution to society than serving burgers and being attacked by
antiglobalist-movements, but that's just my opinion.

Back to you!

Indeed, and imagine the pain they must be going through when:

- making big bucks dj'ing around the globe

- being revered by millions of people

- being revered by countless producers and influencing every techno / house /

I for one couldn't take that much disrespect...

Honestly I think some people here have to start making up their minds, always
stating that techno is underground and should not become commercial and at the
same time always complaining about lack of exposure or being mad whenever a big
event does not pay respect to the underground.

What'll it be?

[313] July party month part 2

2001-07-25 Thread stuffed bird
Hi list (purists and others),

After my trips to London and Paris, and my visit to the 10 days off festival in
Ghent the party month continued. An overview with my humble opinions:

Wednesday 18th July: 10 Days Off

I went to see Derrick Carter who was replacing ear-troubled Garnier but I was
blown away by two others: Herbert and Russ Gabriel. Herbert live was one of the
most inspiring lives I've ever seen. Sometimes he was just a bit too much 'look
what I can do with my machines' and 'look what I dare to do, breaking CD's on
the mic and sampling that to make a track', but the minute his girlfriend came
in on vocals (Dani Siciliano) and the piano player joined as well it was all
about incredibly soulful and deep house music. big up to Herbie!
I'd heard Russ Gabriel bringing it deep three years ago, and the man has
evolved even more towards the deeper side of music. His mixing was far from
flawless, but the tracks made me smile all the way through his set. And he's a
nice fellow as well, what with giving me his last record just because he was
too lazy to write down his e-mail address for future booking purposes :-)
Derrick Carter was a big disappointment. He has given me some of my best nights
in the past, but his uptempo, uninspired tech-house that night made me wanna
cry. How much can you enjoy the music you play when you start playing promo's
that have just been given to you without checking the quality first? Makes you
wonder if Derrick isn't playing too much and just cashing in on his incredible
talents. I hope he gets back to the deeper, vocal side I so love.

Friday 20th July - Monday 23 July: love parade weekend in Berlin

We landed at Tempelhof Airport around 9AM, giving us plenty of time for some
vinyl shopping. The results can be read in the e-mail following this one. So if
you are not interested in my records, don't read it, if you are, prepare to
start weeping :-)

The first night we went to the No Ufo's party at E-Werk, the once legendary
club. Steve Bug absolutely tore it up with his minimal house and techno, a dj
to check out! And a fine producer as well :-) Heard some other dj's that night
too, but they were a bit to rough and loopy for my taste. All in all a good
start.

Saturday afternoon saw us checking out the weirdos at the parade itself.
Getting a good seat close to a drinks-tent, 25°C and just the right amount of
room to be comfortable can turn this parade-thing into quite a nice experience.
The pervy-side of me couldn't help but noticing that German girls all seem to
be over-furnished in the front, the
it-is-love-parade-so-I-need-to-expose-as-much-as-possible attitude didn't quite
help the esthetic side of things, but well, you can't have it all now can you?
In the evening we went to Tresor, impatiently waiting for Blake Baxter to equal
his genius-set of last year, but being blown away by resident dj Senze the
minute we walked into the Globus Room (House room). After that Marshall
Jefferson proved why I ran away 15 minutes into his gig at Cafe D'Anvers in
Belgium a few months back: totally uninspired house with excessive use of the
stupid filter effect on the pioneer mixing table. And again he started with
this white label acapella naming all the things he - Marshall Jefferson - has
done first: bringing a piano into house music, bringing vocals into house
music, and blah blah blah, all rise for the master Marshall Jefferson...
Brother please... Makes you wonder if tracks like Jungle Wonz' 'Time Marches
On', 'The Jungle' or Ten City's 'Suspicious', 'Devotion', etc... were made by a
different Marshall Jefferson.
After two hours of chilling outdoors and checking the basement floor of Tresor
- which must be thee most underground place in the world, but way too hard a
music there for me - Blake was on, and played a fine set, but not quite near as
brilliant as last year.
Sunday saw me just lying in bed the whole day and only getting up for the
Gigolo Records night at WMF. After some problems at the entrance - some 'crowd
selector' thought we were not fit to enter his club until I brought it to his
attention that he had just 'approved' the rest of our gang seconds earlier and
that the necessary girl/boy ratio was thus well-reached by our ladies first
policy - we entered WMF, which I consider to be one of the best clubs I ever
visited, apart from the door policy of course :-)
The smaller of two rooms had DJ Naughty playing some of the finest tracks I
heard in years. Naughty is Fillipo Moscatello, production man behind DJ Hell. I
was just totally blown away by his selection and had to run to the dj booth
time and time again to ID some of his beauties. Crowning moment was when my
'what's that!?' was answered with a big smile and 'that's my remix of

[313] Berlin vinyl harvesting

2001-07-25 Thread stuffed bird
Well, if you think that London or New York can get you sweet amounts of hard to
find vinyls, please read my founds of last weekend in Berlin and reconsider :-)

The shops I went to were Raw/Roh, Hardwax and Space Hall.

We started with Space Hall in the Zossener Strasse, which features a very good
techno-room and a fine house room.

Fisherspooner - Emerge (Naughty's peaktime remix)(Gigolo)

An absolute killer! This track single-handedly contains everything I want from
a house track: it's raw, full of energy and has a bass line from bass line
heaven :-)

DJ Naughty - G3 EP (Gigolo)

More raw stuff from F. Moscatello, clearly giving you clues how Hell gets his
unique sound on his latest recordings...it's Moscatello all over!

TokTok vs Soffy O - Missy Queen's Gonna Die (Bpitch Control)

80ies techno for your body, move over Miss Kittin!

Versatile Family Sampler Limited Edition: Soha - Eve and two other tracks

This track had me crying two weeks ago at the Rex Club when Laurent Garnier
played it. Produced by Julie Jabre and Gregory this is a track which is only
made once in a couple of years and stands out miles from the rest of the French
house scene. Simply beautiful.

Naomi Daniel - Feel The Fire (Innerzon)

Double ep from 1994 featuring 8 tracks. Remixes by Chez'n'Trent, Deep dish and
Craig himself. Quality as can be expected.

Abstract Fusion 2 (Trackmode LP)

8 dep tracks by Larry Heard, GU, Rick Wilhite, ... Pick of the litter is
'Fabulous' by Norma Jean Bell, a track so deep you need a spade for serious
digging to be able to play it...

Savvas Pascalidis - Space Woman (Gigolo)

Typical dark Gigolo track rooted firmly in the 80ies.

We left the Space Hall - with a staff so unfriendly it becomes funny - to cross
the road to Raw/Roh, having no clue of what was awaiting us: vinyl madness!!!

My Chicago Jack/Acid tracks addiction almost suffered an overdose:

2 Chip E tracks on DJ International (forgot the name, they were from 85 and
86). I have often read that Chip E is the true Godfather of house, and now I
know why... Simply amazing tracks which every Chicago-head should own.

Chip E - Jack Me Frankie (DJ International or Underground, can't remember)

More madness from Chip E, honouring the legendary Frankie Knuckles in the days
of the Powerplant.

House People EP on Underground (Tyree, Joe Smooth)

The track 'No Control' blew me away in a Ron Hardy mix on the deephouse page,
and now I have it :-)

Tyree - Acid Over (Underground)

Classic track finally in my crates.

Housemaster Boys - The track we lost (Trax)

How can you lose such a track?

Maurice - This Is Acid (Trax)

More classic Chicago, making you jack like nuthin' else!

Morgan Geist - Super (Environ)

Morgan is the man. My shop only had two copies, which were gone the minute they
were in. I have one too now :-)

Ten City - Whatever Makes You happy, Suspicious and Nothing's Changed (Ibadan)

Three classic Ten City tracks being reworked and refined by Claussell and
Chandler. Nuff said.

Antonio - Celebration of life (Tribal Winds)

The very first Tribal Winds. If you don't know Antonio yet, get to know him.
House to fall in love with.

Braxton Holmes - People Everyday (Cajual)

Another step towards the completion of my Cajual-collection. 63 down, 14 to
go...

Larry Heard - Love's Arrival (Trackmode)

Larry's long-awaited album. Deep quality stuff as expected.

Joshua - Jo-Be EP (Solid Traxx)

As stomped by Derrick Carter for years now. Been searching it for ages. Berlin
provided.

To top it all off I haggled the shopkeeper out of two EP's from his private
collection:

Gherkin Jerks - 1990
Gherkin Jerks - Stomp The Beat

both on Gherkin Records, both by Larry Heard, both nearly impossible to find at
a normal price, both essential IMO. I payed $30 :-)))

After this high Hardwax proved to be a 'normal' shop...

Armando - New World Order 4

Amazing Chicago house in true Armando-fashion (I have 1 and 3 as well, who has
2?).

Furry Phreaks - Want Me Like Water (Peacefrog)

Charles Webster from heaven. Been buying his stuff blind and saw it right every
time :-)

Fabrice Lig / Morgan Geist - Last Eden EP (Star Baby)

Very good Detroitish techno / house with Morgan's touch in one track. And watch
out for Fabrice, fabulous stuff!

I forgot some but I suppose you can understand that with such an unhealthy
amount of tracks... Unhealthy? Not!!!

RE: [313] Moby, underground techno

2001-07-25 Thread stuffed bird

In the beggining techno was underground, but then it was only techno, today
everybody that use somekind of filter is techno.

So if we talking about big events you cant make event, book Moby, FBS,
Underworld(without emerson), Paul van Dyk and call it Techno, because its
POP.

So if I follow your reasoning then Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin,
Dave Clarke, Mark Broom, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Claude Young, Ken Ishii,
etc... who all play or played the I love techno party together with Underworld,
Pills, Mixmaster Mike and others for 3 people here in Belgium (which does
qualify as a big event me thinks) do not play techno but pop?
I'd give a lot to hear their opinion on that...

you can stop that some records go out of thier original place on scene, but
when you start to make songs with that purpose you are history for
underground electronic music. Then you go on Top of the Pops.

When I heard Laurent Garnier play 'Man With The Red Face' live as early as 1999
I don't think that he made that track with the specific purpose of becoming a
hit record. If you could actually know which techno/house records will cross
over into the mainstream I'm willing to bet that all names mentioned above
would not hesitate to make such a track.
Or did you think that Rolando's 'Knights Of The Jaguar' was pre-conceived to
becoming a hit record? He would be glad to hear that...

I could be misreading your thoughts, so feel free to correct me.

RD

Long time ago Moby and crew made that.

Subject: [313] July party month part 2

Hi list (purists and others),

After my trips to London and Paris, and my visit to the 10 days off festival
in Ghent the party month continued. An overview with my humble opinions:

Wednesday 18th July: 10 Days Off

I went to see Derrick Carter who was replacing ear-troubled Garnier but I
was blown away by two others: Herbert and Russ Gabriel. Herbert live was one
of the most inspiring lives I've ever seen. Sometimes he was just a bit too
much 'look what I can do with my machines' and 'look what I dare to do,
breaking CD's on the mic and sampling that to make a track', but the minute
his girlfriend came in on vocals (Dani Siciliano) and the piano player
joined as well it was all about incredibly soulful and deep house music. big
up to Herbie!

I'd heard Russ Gabriel bringing it deep three years ago, and the man has
evolved even more towards the deeper side of music. His mixing was far from
flawless, but the tracks made me smile all the way through his set. And he's
a nice fellow as well, what with giving me his last record just because he
was too lazy to write down his e-mail address for future booking purposes
:-)

Derrick Carter was a big disappointment. He has given me some of my best
nights in the past, but his uptempo, uninspired tech-house that night made
me wanna cry. How much can you enjoy the music you play when you start
playing promo's that have just been given to you without checking the
quality first? Makes you wonder if Derrick isn't playing too much and just
cashing in on his incredible talents. I hope he gets back to the deeper,
vocal side I so love.

Friday 20th July - Monday 23 July: love parade weekend in Berlin

We landed at Tempelhof Airport around 9AM, giving us plenty of time for some
vinyl shopping. The results can be read in the e-mail following this one. So
if you are not interested in my records, don't read it, if you are, prepare
to start weeping :-)

The first night we went to the No Ufo's party at E-Werk, the once legendary
club. Steve Bug absolutely tore it up with his minimal house and techno, a
dj to check out! And a fine producer as well :-) Heard some other dj's that
night too, but they were a bit to rough and loopy for my taste. All in all a
good start.

Saturday afternoon saw us checking out the weirdos at the parade itself.
Getting a good seat close to a drinks-tent, 25°C and just the right amount
of room to be comfortable can turn this parade-thing into quite a nice
experience. The pervy-side of me couldn't help but noticing that German
girls all seem to be over-furnished in the front, the
it-is-love-parade-so-I-need-to-expose-as-much-as-possible attitude didn't
quite help the esthetic side of things, but well, you can't have it all now
can you?

In the evening we went to Tresor, impatiently waiting for Blake Baxter to
equal his genius-set of last year, but being blown away by resident dj Senze
the minute we walked into the Globus Room (House room). After that Marshall
Jefferson proved why I ran away 15 minutes into his gig at Cafe D'Anvers in
Belgium a few months back: totally uninspired house with excessive use of
the stupid filter effect on the pioneer mixing table. And again he started
with this white label acapella naming all the things he - Marshall Jefferson
- has done first: bringing a piano into house music, bringing vocals into
house music, and blah blah blah, all rise for the master Marshall
Jefferson... Brother please... Makes you wonder if tracks like Jungle Wonz'
'Time Marches On', 'The Jungle' or Ten City's 'Suspicious', 'Devotion',
etc... were made by a different Marshall Jefferson.

After two hours of chilling outdoors and checking the basement floor of
Tresor - which must be thee most underground place in the world, but way too
hard a music there for me - Blake was on, and played a fine set, but not
quite near as brilliant as last year.

Sunday saw me just lying in bed the whole day and only getting up for the
Gigolo Records night at WMF. After some problems at the entrance - some
'crowd selector' thought we were not fit to enter his club until I brought
it to his attention that he had just 'approved' the rest of our gang seconds
earlier

[313] House ID's

2001-07-18 Thread stuffed bird
Hi,

Been vibing to a Lil Louis mix I got from somebody (I believe he had it from
the deephouse page) and I just gotta know this track. Its bassline vaguely
reminds me of 'The Word Is Love' by Steve 'Silk' Hurley, and even the whole
feel of this track reminds me of that classic. Lyrics are: keep pushing on,
things are gonna get better, it won't take long, keep on pushing to the top
and then there is another chorus: reach on up and reach on in, keep on pushing
and you'll win which repeats itself for a couple of minutes.
It's NOT 'Rise' by Eddie Amador...

Another track I've been hunting down is a house track in a similar vain which
I heard Derrick Carter, Joe Claussell, Llorca play this weekend, so it should
be fairly recent. Can't tell you much about it, it's a vocal track with a
chorus speaking of 'time and time again'. Quite a minimal house groove, but a
couple of times somes keys / piano licks kick in and heat up the track.

Trainspotters ready?...set...

[313] Bjork - The Hunter Remix

2001-07-18 Thread stuffed bird
Stuffed Bird's trivia continues...sorry for the waste of
bandwidth!

Been searching the world over for any info on a remix of
Bjork's 'The Hunter' that Laurent Garnier played a lot in
1999/2000. I was once told that it was a remix by
Funkstorung, which made sense because they have remixed
more Bjork-tracks.
The track itself is a 4/4 house/techno remix with the
complete unchanged lyrics and a string arrangement that
keeps surging up and down once started.

[313] Three days of emotion

2001-07-16 Thread stuffed bird
Hi peepz,

As July has been officially named party-month at the
stuffed-residence I had quite some blasts these last days.
A review:

Thursday 12 July: called some mates, got into the car and
drove to Paris to check out what could have turned out to
be one of the last Garnier-dj sets ever. The man is
suffering from hearing problems and cancelled almost all
of his gigs for the rest of the year and it remains to be
seen if he will ever return to the decks. With this in
mind the night was rather a mixed feelings one. Now most
of you will know Garnier as a techno dj, but the Rex being
his home he plays allnighters there where he proves just
how diverse his tastes are. The first two hours were so
deep and so house that I just kicked myself in the head
for not going to his Rex-residencies sooner... After the
guest Laurent finished in true Garnier-techno-style: deep,
melodic, full of strings and diversity. If this was
goodbye than it was a good one!

Got back to Belgium in time for the Axion Beach
Beats-festival, the dance counterpart of Beach Rock. Still
tired of the Paris-trip I wanted a slow start and headed
over to the House-tent to check Llorca...to be blown away
from the very first track I heard... This man
single-handedly delivered all that I ever wanted from a
house set: deeper than deep basslines, heavenly vocals,
chicago jack trax (DJ Pierre Phuture mad me totally wild)
and steaming us grooves. Talk about a wake-up call...

After two hours of partying we definitely needed a break
and crashed on the beach to check out Dreadzone on the
main stage; and although I'm not to fond of their
ragga-styled vocals and basslines, they did deliver a
great show and earned everybody's respect.

On to the techno-tent for Stacey Pullen! He had to take
over from T-Quest, who was boring me to death with his
hard, looped techno, and did this in tremendous fashion.
Whereas the crowd went mad to the beats of T-Quest, Stacey
made'em go even more mad to more-than-beats. I know where
my preferences are...

After an hour of Stacey Pullen we had to move again to the
house tent, where master Carter was going to drop some
jackin' beats...and so he did. The first hour was a bit
predictable, but the second hour he gave all he can give,
which in his case means rump-shaking beats and a capella's
thrown in at the right time. My ears were getting a bit
tired by the end of his set, so I decided to call the
dancefloor a day and headed over to the techno tent once
more for the last hour of DJ Hell. And no regrets there!
To my delight Hell's dj sets are going more and more into
the direction of his label-efforts. Delicious 80ies
influenced techno mixed with 'real' 80ies beats and
jackin' house tracks always make my day :-) I headed home
a happy camper...

A good sleep had to get me back in shape for the first day
of the Ten Days Off festival in Ghent (formerly 10 days of
techno). I had been looking forward to this one for some
time: Joe Claussell of BodySoul, Ibadan, Spiritual Life
came to bless us with a 3-hour set! And blessing was
indeed the word! I have NEVER heard anyone put that much
passion and variety into a dj-set. The dj before him
played nowadays typical house set: fast, uninspired,
looped disco beats. And the crowd was digging it in the
way that you are dancing to beats just because everyone
else is and just because it's a party, but there ain't no
true emotion in there, but when Claussell started he
immediately dropped the BPM to a true house-level
(120/125) and started working the EQ's like only NY-dj's
can do. Giving us beats only when we needed them, and then
mixing 'Groovin La Chord' with some Kerri Chandler track
making the whole venue go absolutely insane. It's hard to
describe the feeling I got when he suddenly powered down
the 1200 and played 'Is this love' by Bob Marley... Some
1000 people singing 'Is this love, is this love, is this
love that I'm feeling' when Joe faded the track out during
the chorus is just simply magical. At that moment you
realize that you are not on a house party, you are not on
a techno party, you are just listening and dancing to
music. And all those house and techno purists alike, all
those dj's playing to the formats, all those arty farty
let's follow whatever the hype is types can just retire
and get it over wit

[313] Pathetic Pioneer Projects

2001-07-16 Thread stuffed bird
Hi,

When I visited 10 Days Off in Ghent I couldn't help but
laugh my ass off with the Pioneer add for their newest
DJ-CD player: New features: vinyl emulation, powering down
like a turntable, and more...

Isn't it absolutely hilarious how they are so trying to
make a CD play like vinyls? Next thing you know they'll be
adding a feature providing dust cracks and making the CD's
bigger so they have the size of a 12...

Will somebody please tell 'em that if you are trying to
make CD's like vinyls chances are that we just might
prefer real vinyls? Just a thought perhap

Hi Peepz,

It's been haunting me all day...

I missed the DEMF, which is bad in itself, but all that talk about 'White
Falls' by Lil Louis is getting me pissed.

Sure enough there was a bootleg a few months ago which ripped that track, but
that ain't got nuthin' to do with the original track which is called 'Why'd u
fall' and features on the Epic Release of 'I Called U' from 1989. This piece of
marvel contains 5 tracks, among which the well-known *riing* I called U,
but you weren't there, and the slamming 'The Conversation', best sax-track
ever, with the legendary opening line 'feed me...bass'.

Just setting things straight.

Hi,

While y'all were getting down in Detroit, I went to Fuse in Brussels last
Saturday to see Mr Gigolo Hell.

And it was mad! Hell just played one memorable record after the other, dark,
booming, just the way only he can play.

He even dropped in some old Front 242 stuff :-)

There was one track which stood out, and which also sounded like a Front
242-track, but I can't quite pin it down. It had lyrics in it like 'I wear my
sunglasses at night so I can, so I can...'

Anyone?

Indeed I am and will.

Jori is a great guy and a superb producer IMO. He has released a lot of stuff
which hardly ever leaves my crates.

His releases on F-Com are superb, but he has also released on other labels such
as Lumi Records (co-run by himself I believe) and Plump House (as Bobby
Forrester).
On F-Com his best releases for me are:

Let Me Luv You (as Jii Hoo), limited and pretty hard to find but there is a
release on a uk label as well.

Detach Yorself

And his latest with remixes of Let Me Luv You and Whsipers is da bomb.

He also released a great LP on the now defunct label of Cari Lekebush (forgot
the name): Finland 0 points.

I could give you a complete list of the releases I have, just gimme a yell.

True words by our man John. No Detroit without the Chicago posse as far as I'm
concerned.

Regarding Marshall Jefferson, I love his releases, and he has been there from
the very beginning, but when I heard him DJ a few weeks ago I was soo
disappointed. For two hours he played the most unbelievable cheap filtered

Big bummer I tell you...

Well, I'll keep on playing his records and avoid him as a DJ, easy enough I

[313] Chicago track ID

2001-05-08 Thread stuffed bird
Trainspotter Mac, have a go at this one:

It's a classic chicago track, typical late eighties drum trax, with a vox
throughout and a chorus:

'so let it be real, so let it be house'

There is also a sentence which has been sampled last year by both Trevor
Rockliffe (Mentor 001) and Jonzon - Veinmelter on Gigolo: 'we created a sound
called house but in some minds there still was doubt, we had to clear them'

Re:[313] RE: X-Mix on vinyl

2001-04-27 Thread stuffed bird
There was no X-Mix 1 in the format we all know (video + cd + vinyl). And
indeed, all the X-Mixes (at least the early ones were released on triple
vinyl). I know because I have X-Mix 2 by Laurent Garnier, X-Mix 3
(Hawtin/Aquaviva), X-Mix 4 (Dave Angel) and X-Mix 5 (Hell, best in the series
for me, very rare tracks on that one). And I've seen the Ken Ishii, Hardfloor,
Mr C, Dave Clarke X-Mix'es on vinyl as well.

Happy hunting!

Not all the X-Mix series was released on vinyl, and they definately
aren't available from !K7 anymore.
Hmmm lemme check the network and see what actually was released on
vinyl...
Looks like probably everything from X-Mix 4 (Dave Angel) on.
Good luck finding it.

Mp3, vinyls, CD, etc

2001-04-11 Thread stuffed bird
Hi peepz,

I've been following the medium-discussion for a while now, there have been
solid arguments from all parties, but in the end I think it all comes down to
this: everybody has a preferred way of listening and playing his of her
favourite music. There ain't no right or wrong is this matter, there are just
different ways.

I myself prefer vinyl, because IMO no other medium has up till now reached the
sound of vinyl played on a good turntable with a good soundsystem. I have this
old Hitachi-amp hooked up to my mixer and that dusty, grey, hot as hell after
20 minutes at level 10 baby gives me a sound compared to which all digital
sound seems cold and too clean.
And no matter which technologies will come into being in the future I'm pretty
sure that vinyl will not cease to exist in my lifetime, especially not if I
read all the posts from people who prefer it as well on this list.

And for those people who do prefer MP3's and digital sound, just go ahead and
enjoy the music as much as I do. And if one day there will be a deejay playing
at the same venue as I, only using MP3's, well, if he plays good tracks I'll
have a party, and if he sucks I'll tell him so, and that will have to do with
the music and not the medium.

New Morgan Geist EP (was Morgan Geist)

2001-04-09 Thread stuffed bird
I don't know what Morgan Geist is like as a DJ, but last week I bought 'Metro
Area 3' on Environ, and the a-side of that EP is just totally heavenly.
It has just totally blown me away from the very first moment I heard it. It's
so utterly beautiful is seems even pointless trying to describe it...
He has my vote :-)

RD

Hello folks!

Can anybody give me a comment about Morgan Geist as a DJ?
What kind of stuff does he spin?
Does he play more house or the technoid stuff?

Thanx in advance..

no flames but I disagree, I think that all musicians have the right to forbid
that their music is available on Napster
I love Lil Louis records and it is indeed very difficult to find them, but not
impossible. It has taken me a lot of webtime and a lot of hard cash, but I have
found most or all of his essential stuff one way or the other.
You shouldn't always settle for the easy way!

: Lil Louis, like the Beatles or Metallica,is forbidding
: his tracks on Napster.
: That man is very jealousy of his music, any comments?

this is a pretty silly move it's so difficult to get his records anyway...
now less people are gonna have access to his music. as i was just discussing
with a friend we would by his records as soon as we saw them regardless if
we had them in mp3 format or not. i do understand that it is his music and
he has the right, but it seems a little weird to me.

Re:[313] can't get no decent techno .... but i try

2001-03-30 Thread stuffed bird
yeah sure, just because I don't like banging, looped techno I'm narrow-minded
and I have an elitist attitude...

and I hate to break the news, but some of us do just like the music for being
music without thinking of getting chicks

and FYI, my record boxes are crammed with records that sold over a million
copies and I have not burned them because that turned them too commercial

on the whole it's total lack of respect for opinions and mindless flaming that
brings down the quality of this list filled with people who do love music just
for the sake of it

RD

PS Please don't reply unless you can leave the flaming

I think there are as many quality techno records coming out as there were
in those days,

yeah, when everyone and their mother only uses equipment that's 10 years old
or older, the new sound thing runs thin. So much for being the only
innovative sound eh?

it's just the number of crappy looped banging stuff that has multiplied
enormously,

umm, its always been crappy looped banging stuff. That's what makes it
techno.

and is sadly being bought by loads of young dj's who just want to get the
girls and get paid like a superstar.

isn't getting laid and paid the whole reason for doing ANYTHING? Guys do
certain things because it attracts certain chicks.

Deep house has always been a little less popular and has IMO maintained
more integrity

ahh yes, the whole, if its sold more than a thousand copies the artist MUST
have sold out and have no integrity, bit. Haven't heard THAT before.

I think people take music too seriously for the wrong reasons. YES, its a
powerful medium. YES, its an artform. But dude, RELAX. its just music.
Its not going to cure cancer. Just because an artist writes a song that
other people like besides him does NOT make it evil, nor does it make him a
sellout, or commercialized.

It means he wrote a track that other people like.

Yeah, there's a commercial aspect to music, and there ARE people who
sellout, but i think it happens less than y'all think.

I mean, was andy warhol an evil commercial sellout cause he sold his
paintings?

I just think its time that this whole elitist attitude gives it up. Its
Tired, and i think needs to be saved for acts like britney spears. so Sit
back, RELAX, enjoy the hard beats.

(although the French disco house sound is a serious attempt at destroying
that integrity).

yeah, those evil French Disco House Dj's are just trying to capitalize on
that which is pure and unmoved right? Cause they're makin those Ten Dollah
bills y'all!

Oh well, just wanted to toss my 2 cents in. you're more than welcomed to
your opinion, and if you want to keep yourself as closeminded as possible,
that's great. don't let me stop you from reaching that level of Snobbery
(seriously).

My opinion:

Deep house makes me want to go to bed. For a supposed new sound, its just
as old and rehashed as all music is.

AJ sound

2001-03-28 Thread stuffed bird
Hi,

A few weeks back I finally located and bought a track which has eluded me from
the very first moment I heard it featuring in Laurent Garnier's 'Laboratoire
Mix'. I only heard it once thereafter and that was also when LG was spinning at
10 days of techno.
I now have it and am playing it constantly :-)

I now also have a bit more info: it is a release on a UK label called Decay
Records, 'The Block EP', produced by AJ Sound, with my fave track called
'Basemental'.

I paid a rather steep price because I could not locate it in any database
(HTFR, Sonic Groove, etc) so I had to be really rare.

Any info? Jonny?

Re:[313] OT track id

2001-03-19 Thread stuffed bird
That's Sandee - Notice Me on Fever records. Produced by Clivilés Cole
incredibly enough. Released way back in 1988. There have been re-releases on
other labels but I don't know which. Check www.htfr.com for more details, I
think it's in their database.

RD

Haye!

This one should be easy, though not 313.

I've heard this track quite some years ago. Baaad bassline, some vocals
in spanish wit a lot of reverb. Because all that reverb, I can't understand
what the vocals say besides conocer-me (to know me). It gets to the point
that the vocals go something like: Why didn't you noticed me, like I've
noticed you, why didn't you love me like I loved you... (this one should be
the easy part for the ID)
It has some breaks that are typical of old-school chi-house (even though it
may not be), and some instrumental solos too that you don't hear anymore.
Somewhere out there should spot it. I apreciate it.

Re:[313] Isn't this all just about a party???

2001-03-13 Thread stuffed bird
Whoa indeed, big props to Scott for telling all tight-assed pseudo wannabe a
superstar dj's how it is.

As if Derrick May, Derrick Carter, Laurent Garnier and other true players would
even bother with such a trifling job like taking off labels...

Stop arsing about please.

RD

Whoa!!!

I think this 'label' discussion is a perfect example of how crazy this whole
DJ thing has gotten in the past 5 or so years... Not to ruin the fun for
anybody, but a DJ's set is not really a religious experience, it mainly is
not a piece of artistic expression, it is just some good records being
played to keep the party flowing, and that's what's it's been since it's
beginning in detroit (think of what was being played at the prep scene
parties, hardly stuff that was unknown or secretive)... As far as mixing
and all that stuff, it's really just a way to keep the floor moving and the
party jumping, not necessarily as a way to show how 'good' or 'talented' you
are... Anyone can spin records with enough practice... There is innovation
on the decks, but most everything has been done before, and with enough
practice can be done by anybody... The best DJ's just rock the party IMHO...

How this relates to the 'taking off labels' discussion is this... If you
feel the need to take off your labels, go ahead... But you're being a
complete prick... Crap like this ticks me off... like I'm so cool I don't
want anyone to know what records I'm playing... This is music ideas
something that should be shared with everyone, and anyone... I saw Derrick
May in Connecticut a few months back and it was the first time I heard the
Force record by Technasia... I had to find out what record it was, so I
waited for an appropriate time after his set, and asked him what that 5th or
so record he played was with the white jacket... And he was more than nice
about flipping through his records (he truly didn't know what he had played
as was mentioned earlier in the thread), till I saw it... Then he let me
write down all the info, and told me when I e-mailed them about the record
that I should mention he played it... Very cool I thought... Now that is
the way it should be... Derrick may IMHO is the best DJ in the world
period, and if he's not too big to share the music he plays than who the
hell else is??? We should be a family, not a bunch of spy's trying to keep
what's good away from each other... In My humble opinion at least..

RE: [313] curious on opinions more

2001-03-01 Thread stuffed bird
I guess if we're talking about good and fresh house there are a few names which
people keep forgetting:

Larry Heard, Brett Dancer and for sure Jori Hulkkonen. Besides being a very
cool bloke he keeps on releasing stuff that's getting better by the record.
'Wanna Do You' is absolutely divine, as is his latest ep 'We are Being Watched'.

Which brings me to another point that has not been mentioned on this list since
I joined: F Communications! This label from Eric Morand and Laurent Garnier has
been as consistent in releasing superb stuff as any other label. And I do think
they have one major advantage on many other quality labels like Tresor, Glasgow
Underground, etc, their diversity.
Any comments on that?

RD

:::
:::Glasgow Underground the other GU :)
:::
:::Yeah, both GU's are worth checking out.. how about Rick Wade,
:::Rick Wilhite,
:::anything from the Planet E stable, Johnny Fiasco just to start.
:::
:::Also, the UK lable, Paper often has some good house sounds.

agreed also seem to have common factor signed up too (well under his real
name Nick Calaengart sp?) don't no what the deal is with some of the track
names though eg the nipple song and the penis song but good none the less

been picking up some very nice tunes on classic records from the uk too,
derrick carter, iz wiz dj bang to name a few
but yeah the planet e stuff is definetly worth checking esp. that herbert
remix of recloose also looks like they've released some older tunes on an
album..
this was on juno:

Vital track ID and comment

2001-02-23 Thread stuffed bird
Hi all,

I'm looking for this track, which has a very Green Velvet-feel to it with a
vocal saying 'I'm so nasty' throughout. Has about the same build-up as Velvet's
'Help me' track.
I heard it the first time on a tape from Laurent Garnier at Fuse in 1995, and
last year Derrick Carter played it at Food Club. I asked him what it was and he
showed me the sleeve which stated: Nuthin Nyce 'Nasty Girl'.
Can anyone provide me more info on that one? Label, where can I get it, etc.

Much obliged,

Re:[313] Since We're On The Topic Of Ron Trent

2001-02-15 Thread stuffed bird
Who's talking about influences? Ron Trent is just a great producer making
fabulous music.

Isn't good music what it's all about?

I wish a lot of people would stop seeking influences and labelling things in
electronic music. Good music is good music, no need to divide things IMO.

RD

Greetings,

I'm always suprised to see references to people like Ron Trent on this list
every now and then. I was just curious to find out what kind of influences
Ron has had to the 313 sound?

Ciao,

Joel

RE: [313] Dream Sequence?

2001-02-09 Thread stuffed bird
I think imma have to correct you on that one. There was indeed a re-release of
the Dream Sequence LP a while ago, but only a few weeks back Tresor released a
new Dream Sequence EP with three tracks, and this week or next week will see
the release of a new dream sequence LP, which I saw on CD last weekend in
Muenster DE. The EP contained two rather mediocre tracks and one storming track
in typical Blake style, co-produced by Trevor Rockliffe.

Yep, the first Dream Sequence wasn't his best work for me as well, I prefer the
stuff he did before that on Incognito, KMS, UR or his EP's on UK's Logic
Records.

RD

It's a re-release of an old Blake Baxter album. The original album was
released in 1992 or so. This is definitly not Blake's best work. Try his
latest work or his earliest.

can someone post me a review on Dream Sequence album on
 Tresor (i think it
is Tresor 160) and also some more info on this artist, please?

 thanks

RE: [313] Madkatt Courtship

2001-02-06 Thread stuffed bird
Felix Stallings is indeed his full name, he has released under different guises
such as Aphrohead, Felix Da Housecat, Sharkimaxx, Aura and Thee Dove, a.o.

A few essential tracks:

In the Dark We Live - Aphrohead (Bush Records)
Thee Dawn - Felix D.H. (Guerilla)
Metropolis LP - Felix (Radikal Fear)
and many, many more (mail me privately if you want a complete list, I have some
40 or 50 records of him...)

He was at one time part of Pierre's Phantasy Club I believe, contributing to
Fantasy Girl and other classics if i'm not mistaken.

RD

Aphrohead is also known as Felix the Housecat. He has released numerous
tracks under these 2 names. Felix Stallings (I thought that was his last
name but i'm not sure) is one of the beter DJ Pierre followers. He has
adapted hsi wild pitch sound to his own unique sound. He was also
responsable together with pierre for some choicago house classics but i
forget wich tracks.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well you're right about one thing it is a good album ;-). But
 about the detroit
affiliation no (not that I know). But hey it isn't that far
 apart...just a few
hours driving...and the man made some classic technocuts
 under his APHROHEAD
 guise.

About something in a similar vain. That isn't easy. Try
 locating Armando's (RIP)
Album. Fear the world (I think it is called, but don't have
 my collection here.
List correct me if I'm wrong). Which can stand the comparison.

 JayCee

BTW : Lighten up people...no need to shoot each other to pieces...

Hello - I'm currently listening a lot to I know
 Electrikboy by Madkatt
Courtship - incredible album, incredible production, 90% of
 the tracks are
  excellent singles on their own...
  and :
  1) I seem to remember the guy is somehow
 Detroit-affiliated, is this true ?
  2) any recommandations in the same vein ?
  Thanks in advance
  Gwendal

Re: [313] Gemini CDJ Package For Sale

2001-02-01 Thread stuffed bird
Don't know if there are any Monthy Python fans on this list, but I think this
is turning into a rather silly discussion. Just play what you want at the speed
you want, it's just a matter of feeling comfortable. I usually play no faster
than 120/125bpm, so I have to downpitch almost everything. And if I want to
play Untitled by Robby Hood, I have to pitch up my beats and still play it -8
(for the record, pitching up to +16 does not do anything for downpitching!),
and I like it just fine.
If one should play every record as it was intended, there wouldn't be a lot of
mixing freedom now would there? Hell, you wouldn't even need pitching, let
alone technics. Do you think dj's play the BPM-level the way they made the
record?! That's what I mean, silly ain't it?

RD

On Thu, 1 Feb 2001, Dennis Donohue wrote:

 I agree...
There are alot of older tracks that I rarely play anymore because they are

   Most Metroplex records

why do you ruin good old classics by playing them too fast? that sounds
horrible! and why are you limiting yourself to only about 135 bpm? start
working from slower records then slowly work it up to more uptempo, it's
really easy. then learn to bring the tempo downwards. d'oh. buy yourself a
bit wider range of records and try again. thank you. I can't understand
this i play only this tempo thingy at all. it's so narrow minded.

Re:[313] the LONG short of dj sets

2001-01-31 Thread stuffed bird
Hold your horses! I never denied Mills abilities, nor as a dj, nor as an
artist. And I know he doesn't claim to be God, it's just that when I see
hundreds of kids screaming like madmen just when they see Jeff approaching the
decks, and doing the same when he is bangin' away at a way-too-fast-pace to be
healthy, with more backspins than any normal brain could handle, changing
records every 2 minutes or less, well at that time I do not consider him to be
an exquisite dj, and I long for the moment when he would play his Every Dog Has
Its Day - tracks and other beauties.
I must add that I have only seem him on big raves, and we all know that for
some bizarre reason dj's think that at big raves it has to be harder, faster,
less groovy, no room for downtempo moments. That's wack IMHO.

Who is great in my book?

Derrick Carter, DJ Rasoul, Laurent Garnier, Mark Farina, Mike Dunn.

Those have never disappointed me.

Later,

RD

And finally someone who dares to say that Jeff Mills is not God behind the
decks.

Mills never claims to be God, why would you listen to anyone quoting such
tripe? However if you're denying Mills' ability as an exquisite dj and
artist, I would be curious to see who is 'superb' in your book.
You know I heard Oakenfold is pretty smooth. Same for Guiness Stout and
babies' bottoms...

Re: [313] the long dj set

2001-01-30 Thread stuffed bird
you are not alone on this one my friend :-)

I too hate the 'look mama how many records I can squeeze into an hour'-style.
Just listen to Derrick Carter or Laurent Garnier, mixing for four minutes or
more, they just tell a complete story. It oftens happens that you just don't
know which sound belongs to which track, a new track is born that very moment,
and that's dj-magic for me!

And finally someone who dares to say that Jeff Mills is not God behind the
decks.

Smoothness all the way baby!

RD

the more i read this, the more i ask myself if you guys have ever heard a
really
superb dj (which e.g. jeff mills is a solarsystem away from). even techno
can be
mixed fast but smooth, interesting but building. i can't understand why
people like
this i need to play 10 vinyls in 3 minutes style, no matter what comes. no
matter
if it even is more bumping than smooth. this always makes me completely
confused
when i heard a good track and another one is rolling in like a train in my
face, 5 beats
faster than the one which is just playing (umfgadumppengbaengbumm). even if
i seem
to be alone on this point of view, but i can't dance to that.
i love to spin two tracks for 10 minutes (if possible) together and play
around with them.
there is much more a good dj can build up than with crashing tracks into
each other.

I think that could be Terra Deva (sorry, short-term memory forgot the title,
but if no one else comes through I'll look it up at home, have it somewhere).
The track you want is a Joshua rmx, the b-side has a fabulous stripped-down
underwater grooving Derrick Carter remix. I've got it on True records, a label
distributed by belgian N.E.W.S.

RD

Hi 313ers

If someone could ID the following track for me i would be so happy (i've
been trying to discover what it is for a few years now after i heard Carl
Craig play it on his Radio One Essential mix...)

It's in Kenny Larkin's set on Plus 8 Transmissions part a, and it plays at
aroun 18mins 30 secs.WHAT a track : kind of a looped strummed guitar
sound with simple but effective bassline with the occasional break in the
loop...vocal comes in : searchin'.searchin' every night which
loops round and round

Hopefully yours,

Re:[313] Haha, you are so lame!! (was future of DJ'ing)

2001-01-24 Thread stuffed bird
I got to admit, Tosh has some very strong arguments here,
but he has especially mastered the art of making a point
in his favor by using a lot of put-down remarks. A keen
and commonly used trick to baffle opponents in a
discussion.

What are we talking about here? Is the digital jockey the
end of our music? Of course it isn’t. No less than DJ’s
who still prefer vinyl and refuse using a laptop are
small-minded traditionalists.
What bothers me in all this ranting and raving about
progression and embracing new technology is the emptiness
of it all. Everyday we are slapped in the face with some
new and improved technology which we should use because we
would not wish to be hopelessly retarded now would we?
Sorry to break the news to all the technology freaks, but
this is absolute bollocks. Just take a minute to look back
in the past and see what was the last invention which has
really affected all of our lives, whether we wanted it or
not. Was it the mobile phone? Was it the internet? No it
wasn’t. People not using the internet, or not using a
mobile phone are perfectly happy and do not miss a single
thing without which they could not live. The last
invention which really affected everybody and everything
was the car. It gave us the possibility to see more of the
world, it affected the environment (roads, pollution), it
affected the economy. It changed the face of the earth.
All the other new and revolutionary technologies are mere
trifles in our lives.

What does this all have to do with our discussion? Well,
whether you use vinyl or final scratch, the progression
will always made by your mind, by the things you play, by
the feeling you can pass on to people listening.
Making things ‘easier’ has absolutely nothing to do with
progress, it’s called laziness, and IMO it’s laziness
which brings things to a halt.

I prefer to play with vinyls, and I don’t care to tow
along truckloads of record bags, I feel good with it, and
if you think that makes me a narrow-minded, old-fashioned
conservative, you couldn’t be more wrong.

RD

I can't believe the things I read on this list. This
list, which uses
the works of Alvin Toffler in vain and frequently evokes
the imagry of
Blade Runner and music created in a present future
dystopia, and then I
read crap like this:

Sounds horrible, going through the box is part of the
artform. It would
make it too calculated, you can't flick through your box,
land on
something
else and think hmmm, now maybe I can play that instead.

The smell of brand new vinyl out of the sleeve, the
crackle of the record under the needle... there's
something spiritual and special about vinyl that no
other media can replicate.

Pushing buttons has nothing to do with dj'ing as far as
I am concerned.
Imagine the joy of finally finding that record you've
been
after for several years, and then compare it to
downloading that track

Seeing a set being pieced together with records and
the DJ making the set come together is part of the
thrill and artform.

Do you really want to watch some dude just press a few
buttons on a computer, a pre-planned set, there could be
no spontaneity,
by default. It would be as boring as hell. Any fool could
use the new
system as it would be a relative cinch.

I can't see too many house DJs adopting the new thing

Like aren't some of the hip-hop turntablists
establishing a way of
notating scratches?

I also sometimes wonder about about the reading ability
of people on
this list. I seem to recall saying the only aspect of
DJ'ing that it
changes is the carrying of vinyl and selecting of tracks
to play. Do
you people have that much difficulty with English? Is
the Aussie
dialect really that difficult that it doesn't penetrate
the quoted
sentence? I will break down the sentence:

*the only aspect of DJ'ing that it changes* - this
implies there is only
one aspect, but there are actually two, now I see why you
are all
confused.
*is the carrying of vinyl* - this is aspect one, the DJ
doesn't have to
carry around as much vinyl anymore. How much less is up
to the
individual.
*and selecting of tracks to play* - this is the other
aspect, the DJ no
longer has to flip through a box of records.

PAY ATTENTION! THE PERFORMER STILL MUST BUILD A SET,
MUST STILL
PLACE THE NEEDLE ON A RECORD ON A TECHNICS 1200, MUST
STILL MATCH BEATS,
MUST STILL CREATE A MOMENTARY EVENT, MUST STILL LOOK FOR
HO'S, MUST
STILL TRY NOT TO KNOCK THE NEEDLE WHEN BLOWING COKE, MUST
STILL DECIDE
IF RECORD 'B' IS SUITABLE TO PLAY AFTER RECORD 'A', ETC
ETC
ET-FU**ING-CETERA.

So with that out of the way and because I am bored and
incredulous I
will respond to each of these in order.

Sounds horrible, going through the box is part of the
artform. It would
make it too calculated, you can't flick through your box,
land on
something
else and think hmmm, now maybe I can play that instead.

Laurent ID's

I posted this one a few weeks ago, but it was kinda hidden
among several other ID-wants, so here we go again, I know
you can do it!

This is a mix of Laurent Garnier, played at the weekend of
love 2000 at No Ufo's the evening before the love parade.

The mix can be found on www.stereofm.com, it's an
absolutely stunning Laurent Garnier at his very best, I'm
like two tracks to be ID'd in particular. First one is
38min into the mix, second one 46min into the mix.

Re: [313] Future of DJ'ing, also anyone at MIDEM?

2001-01-22 Thread stuffed bird
And even then...

Same reason why I refuse to play any CD's applies here as
well. Pushing buttons has nothing to do with dj'ing as far
as I am concerned.
Imagine the joy of finally finding that record you've been
after for several years, and then compare it to
downloading that track from the internet...
Nuff said I think.

RD

Sounds horrible, going through the box is part of the
artform. It would make
it too calculated, you can't flick through your box, land
on something else
and think hmmm, now maybe I can play that instead. The
advantage is that it
overcomes the dreaded, 'the airline lost my records, damn
I will have to
borrow Judge Jules' records or make a quick sortie to the
local record
store' syndrome.

Anyone at MIDEM and see the release of Final Scratch?

You know how I've been going on about the future of
DJ'ing? Well Hawtin
and Acquaviva along with N2IT out of The Netherlands did
their press
release of Final Scratch yesterday. It's not the first
time they've
used the system, it was used during their Peel show a
few months ago,
and John has been using it at almost every gig for the
last few months.

Essentially the only aspect of DJ'ing that it changes is
the carrying of
vinyl and selecting of tracks to play. Now instead of
carrying boxes of
vinyl you need only a suitable powerful laptop, and
instead of flipping
through your record box you just double-click a track
and it's ready to
go. That is the only aspect of DJ'ing as we all
currently know that
changes.

track id's laurent garnier

2001-01-17 Thread stuffed bird
Mighty 313-spotters,

A huge task awaits you. I have some 7 tracks I'd really like to be ID'd.

First of all, there are two tracks laurent garnier played at the Weekend Of
Love of NO UFO's on the love parade 2000. A part of that set can be found on
www.stereoFM.com (there's only one garnier mix, can't miss it)

It's the second track in the mix, first track being Phuture's 'String Free', it
has a kind of new wave male vocal in it singing: my force is in my soul, my
force is in my heart, come to me, come to me, love me, don't leave me, leave me
alone, the track itself is a driving techhouse thing, vox reminds me of Jimi
Tenor or New Order.

And around 33 min into that mix there is another gem I don't know. Reminds me
of some of the softer stuff of Johannes Heil. A typical Garnier-as-a-dj-track.

Right, part 2. I have this tape from a radio show called Nightgroove, I believe
in Frankfurt in Germany. Laurent once again spinning the tracks. The first 6
tracks of that mix are pure magic, and I only know one of them... Here we go:

Track 1: electro-track, machine vox saying: You've got no work, because of me.
I'm a machine, I never sleep. And now you pray all night and day. A funny way,
I'm human made

Track 2: definitely Björk, but probably a remix, lyrics: I'm a hunter, I bring
back the goods, I'm not stopping, Leaving it all behind, someone told me this
was a rare remix by Funkstörung? Label?

Track 3: typical track for Garnier to play, heavenly synth line, and a driving
loop coming in around half of the track going higher and higher, no vox here
:-((

Track 4 is ME's 'Ride' on Trax-records.

Track 5: WHAT IS THIS? Detroit-styled rhythms and drums, synth lines
equalling Jaguar, and then suddenly someone starts stabbing a synth/organ sound
in a Carl Craig way.

Track 6: purpose maker styled with an overwhelming synth kicking in

That's it, I'm waiting and hoping.

track ID's Ron Hardy Mix

2001-01-11 Thread stuffed bird
Hi all,

I love Detroit, but I absolutely adore Chicago, so forgive me if some of you
find this off topic (which it is really not because who influenced Derrick May,
Juan and others? Yep, the late Ron Hardy).

Here we go, the mix I listened to is on http://deephousepage.com/mix12.htm

It is No 438 from the list, a Ron Hardy mix from 1987:

My everlasting love and respect to those who can ID the following tracks:

track 5: Trax-style all the way, female singing: Fall down on me, I need you,
I need you,etc

track 6: Trax-style, male singing: Can't you see, everybody is dancing with
me...Music takes control, music that's good for your soul...

track 7: a deep deep bassline turning into a scorching acid loop, wind gusting
throughout the track

I'm hoping that the mighty 313 spotters can help me here. But I'm sure you'll
all have a blast listening to the mix!

Thanks,

RD

Re: [313] dodgy mixing

2001-01-05 Thread stuffed bird
My mail about dodgy mixing was not directly related to the UR DJ's or UR party,
it was just a general impression I have after 10 years of visiting parties and
listening to tapes and mixes.
Also, Ken Ishii was just an example I gave. When I saw him, way back in 97,
just when he had started earning a (well deserved) name as producer, he just
couldn't mix. The fact that he has become a good DJ now (would be sad if he
hadn't after three years...) does not change the point I was trying to make:
great producers often start DJ'ing to make good money just when they are not
ready to give a good DJ performance. It is their right to capitalize on their
producing success, but I feel ripped-off when some big name turns out to be a
crappy DJ, and sadly it happens all the time.

I'm confused about this supposed dodgy mixing by the UR DJs. Not that I
heard
and saw.

Also, the post 5-am shutdown was completely in line with the entire
presentation
UR did. The point is, they show up, they do their thing, then they're gone.
This is not a standard presentation and not supposed to be. If that offends,
so be it, but I know that UR have their reasons for doing things...

Hello think tank,

I'm looking for the track which was first sampled (that I know of) by Johnny
Fiasco on his Cajual EP in the track 'Get Up' (The label on the vinyl says
Funkies Funk 2, but I think they got the order wrong), the same EP also
contains 'Conduction'. That very same sample is now not used but abused in the
club hit 'IntroD' by Alan Braxe/Fred Falke.

Anyone?

As long as party-organisations continue to book good producers for DJ sets just
because they attract a crowd, and as long as producers regard DJ'ing just as a
way of making easy money you'll have awful mixing by well-known names. A few
years ago Ken Ishii was announced as the great Japanese DJ, not to be missed at
Ten Days Of Techno in Ghent. It was a bloody disgrace, the sucker couldn't even
put the beats in the right tempo, he was still desperately listening to his
headphones (with both ears...) and didn't even hear his first record was
finished...
Steve Stoll is even worse...

What everebody should learn to do is cut the hype about these people and stop
yelling and screaming when they are being announced or when they come on stage
and just learn who the true DJ's are and who the producers are.

I'm sure that half of the DJ's which are announced a big parties can be
outclassed by many people here on 313.

Big respect to the likes of Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Laurent Garnier and
some others who truly know what DJ'ing is all about, and for most of the
others, please put together a decent live show and leave the decks to those who
know!

Re: [313] 313 rumor...

Another cool 'breakthrough' story is the one of Finish house genius Jori
Hulkkonen:

He discovered early house and techno in his above-the-polar-circle town Oulu
through a Swedish radio show. He didn't know for the world where to get those
records and that kind of music so he decided to make his own and started buying
old equipment wherever he could find it. After a while he started sending tapes
to various labels he had discovered through frequent visits to Helsinki (where
he had finally found some house records). A few months later his mother told
him that there was an American gentleman on the phone for him...it turned out
to be Carl Craig who wanted to give him a contract on Planet E. Jori was so
overwhelmed he couldn't answer immediately so Carl gave him a few days to think
about it. The following day he had just about made his decision when the phone
rang again...it was a French gentleman calling from his car. It turned out to
be Laurent Garnier who immediately offered him a contract for a whole slew of
12...

Talk about choices, choices...

Subject: [313] 313 rumor...

This one is 313, and it does not even concern Atkins' drug addiction : I'd
like to have some confirmation for the following story :
 Matt from detroit is
recloose, who has released four 12inches on carl craig' s planet e.
matt was working in a deli right next to the planet e office, where
carl craig and hannah went out to having brunch every day. one day
carl craig found a tape in the sandwich just between ham, salad and
mayonnaise. this was from matt. that's why the first recloose
release on planet e had a comic sandwich on the cover!

And as a general rule : this rumor seems very similar to the one about Kid
Koala and Ninja Tune - is there some common urban legend there, or are
there
other verified examples of producers DJs getting attention by finding
some weird way of giving their tapes to label people ?

track ID's Derrick May

2000-12-21 Thread stuffed bird
Hi people,

Right, I've got this tape mixed by Derrick May at Simon's in Gainsville (I
believe 1998), somewhere around 50min he plays 'Silvery Sounds' by Sound Of K
on Fcom, right after that he plays this track which is kinda the ultimate party
track: a kind of jazzy, big band bass line and this female scatting voice over
top talking about the moo-moo blues in an incredibly fast way, what the hell is
this track?!

part 2, a track commonly played by Derrick and by Blake Baxter sampling 'I love
music, any kind of music', ID please

thanks guys and girls

Hi strangers,

Just joined this list after hearing from it through John
O., Belgium's leading Detroit techno journalist.

Is this a nothing-but-detroit-do-not-look-beyond type of
list or do you welcome a DJ who plays all music groovy, be
it Motor City, Windy City, Big Easy or Big Apple?
