fyi, 13 minutes of that mills set is people talking in spanish about nothing very interesting. The Soundslike party (Alex posted the LD link) is definately the place to be on Thursday night if you like good music. Raf and Dave are wicked djs and Dani Sicilliano played some great tracks at the party I was at a couple of weeks ago, she was joined by Herbert for a while too. I'll be there if anyone wants to meet up. Friday night at Sonar itself is a pretty good lineup: Jamie Lidell, Soft Pink Truth, Laurent Garnier. The Kompakt beach party is always fun on Sunday but I can't remember the address - ask about, lots of people will be going. It's the greatest city in the world and there are some great club nights, so you don't need to bother with the event itself (esp. the night one) Yes, it is a nice city.. ..but please note that it is getting popular in Barcelona to add some fuk'n high season extra to accommodation prices in Barcelona during Sonar festival. I would highly recommend to visit the city some other time.. But if you're going there you should book the accommodation *right now*! Getting some decent and cheap rooms to sleep in is getting difficult..it may be too late already?

It is a great city. I just like being in Barcelona with a few friends, soaking up the sun the atmosphere. Having a good festival to go to is a bonus! I don't like large events / festivals in the U.K usually, but at Sonar it seems to be organized so much better. hmmm ken i recently saw Mathew Jonson here in rome and he totally blew us away so im thinking it cant get any better than thatjust a feeling. regarding Hawtin Villalobos, im thinking that the best place ever to see them play is definitely in Berlin, especially at the free Club Der Visionaere after hour club on the river - 'twas a free party and RR played the most amazing music non stop for over 4 hours after having played most of the night at Watergate. Definitely a party for those who know, a sort of hush hush affair;). anyway RR as well as Magda (and Dimbiman, and others) are all playing here in Roma for the Dissonanze festival in May, so that's one of the reasons im not feeling Sonar. Plus i've seen almost all the artists form this years lineup, so i dont feel like employing resources to go to Barca and risk seeing something like Mills playing looped bangers to a horde of pilled-up 20 somethings. You get the equipped kitchen etc for less than a hotel room. But last year they also switched to high season pricing with 20-30% extra to regular prices. I agree with everyone that says Sonar Barcelona is not worth the trip. Not only is the lineup lackluster and the city not at it's best at that time of year, but also Sonar doesn't take care of the majority of artists that play at the festival. According to a trusted Germany producer friend (who has been booked at Sonar), only the main acts like Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills and a couple of really big English acts with strong management get paid to play. They pay very few of the German acts (Villalobos now probably) - they all have to pay their own flights, no wage and only receive a hotel room for one day! So, many of the artists that we would consider paying to see, never get paid themselves. How does that support the music subculture??? I think generally the idea has been that it's a huge publicity opportunity for the artists, so it's more than worth doing for free. In fact, I had been under the impression that the artists playing at the daytime event actually paid to play, much the same way as you would pay to have a record stand there - it's all for promotion. I think in that sense it supports the sub-culture far more than a couple of hundred quid and a plane ticket would. I guess when it started up it also wouldn't have been possible to run such an underground event if everyone was expecting their usual fee. Personally, I don' think that's a bad thing at all, I'm all for the scene being based more on mutual support rather than cash, where possible. I too thought Mills' set was amazing. I loved the way he used the old footage of Donna Summer, Chic Sugarhill Gang - it was like they were performing live with him. He played 'We are the Robots' as well - that was a definite highlight. I don't hear enough Kraftwerk in clubs! Mills was in the local record shop as well, signing new 7' records handing them out. Surprisingly, it wasn't even that busy in the shop. G. Naturally our group was late in arriving at Sonar by nite, we arrived in about 1:45am, so missed the start, wandered over to the room they where on. A massive room, It was great, totally blown away by there set. I would definitely go see them again. Matthew Dear Sonar Nite Friday I can't really remember much about Matthew Dear, but I do remember really enjoying it and having a great time, although there seemed to be some small technical difficulties with the sound, but it didn't really matter. Agoria Agoria banged it out, but not the usual boring hard techno, again can't remember the tunes he played but the place was going mad, I just remember having a good time. Jeff Mills Sonar Nite Saturday Jeff Mills was amazing, I've seen Mills play in Dublin and London, but this was my favourite of them all, I half expected not to be impressed with Mills, but he was brilliant, he played a few classics like The Bells etc. Halfway through his set the Sonar Model (one of the faces of Sonar 2004) came on stage with a camera to take pictures of the crowd (although probably no film in the camera), the place was jammed at this stage so many more people there than Friday nite. Mills kept playing although he didn't seem distracted by her, but he certainly had a quick look at her... He was also playing the 909 and brought one to the front of the stage and got on his knees and played it in front of everyone. It looked great and sounded great. Totally impressed by him! They also had 3 cameras looking at the decks on the main stage so you could see from the back of the room... Miss Kitten Sonar Nite Saturday She played twice over the weekend, on Thursday and then again on Saturday nite to fill in for Carl Cox (definitely a bonus). Miss Kitten was great, can't remember the tunes she played with the exception of Stock Exchange at the end of her set. She rocked the place and was dancing around the decks and appeared to be having a great time! David Carretta Sonar Nite Saturday Only saw a small bit of Carretta, again he was rocking the outdoor part of the Sonar by nite. DJ Hell Sonar Nite Saturday Only saw a small bit of Hell, again he was rocking the outdoor part of the Sonar by nite. SonarLab (I think it was the Lab...) Sonar Day Saturday On Saturday afternoon, it was pretty relaxed in the Sonar Village, But at around 5 or 6 in the afternoon the skies where getting dark and you could hear the reliable sound of the 4, 4 coming from the SonarLab tent ( I think it was the SonarLab tent..), about 15 minutes before it started to rain, people started crowding into the tent, the kick drum was like a magnet the place was going mad, it was like 3:00am in the morning, it was jammed, then it started to rain, which made it even busier, definitely one of the highlights of Saturday afternoon was seeing the tent fill so fast and seeing everyone just going for it... I can't remember the exact time, somewhere between 4:30 - 6:00 but it was either DJ Nudge DJ Paul Naza (I could be wrong here.) Bad Bits Dave Clarke Sonar Nite Saturday Boring Boring Boring! He was $hit! I don't think e even smiled! Why was he the last DJ on Saturday nite?

I saw some of his set, which was fantastic - but he was on at the same time as Mills who absolutely rocked it, so I was torn between the two for a couple of hours. The end of Mills' set was off the hook - he took the 909 off its stand behind the decks and carried it to the front of the stage where he crouched down and worked it for about five minutes with 10,000 people going apeshit... The subway system is really good there, so it's hard to stay in a bad place - you can get to a station from most anywhere, and it's fast. I highly recommend using it when you're there. Or, when you first get there, climb on one of the big double-decker Bus Turistic busses - they go around to all the major sightseeing spots, and you can get off and back on at will, given a 1-day or 2-day pass. It's a good way to get your sea legs there, and get an overview of the city. Then you can abandon it and get around on your own, i.e. on foot or by subway or cab - if it's too late at night. I've never ridden the city busses as it's too hard for me to figure out the routes, much less speak Spanish to the driver to ask WTF they're going :-) Besides, I like to walk when I'm there - and eventually you'll hit a subway station anyway. There's a temptation to stay along (or as close to as possible) Las Ramblas. I wouldn't - too trafficy, too noisy, too many pickpockets, etc. etc. While it's worth the occasional walk-down, I prefer a nice quiet area to sleep in that's still close to public transport and the thick of things (down near the water). This has led to Sonar being somewhat narrow-cast in range, as can be seen by the fact that the intersection of Movement/DEMF and Sonar is only Jeff and Rich. Want 313? Want Electro? Want Tech-House? Want insert your favorite sub-genre here? You won't get it at Sonar. Curiously, for the adventurousness of some of the bookings (I disagree with Ken Odeluga here - I can't wait to see The Soft Pink Truth [half of Matmos], for example), the organizers are playing it far too safe these days and aren't willing to consider anything special or out of the ordinary. For example, it's the 10th anniversary of Sonar - Rich wanted to do a 6-hour closing set at the Sonar Village at the CCCB (4-10) playing a 10-year retrospective. They refused and would only offer him his usual 2-hour banging set at night. G. That would've been kickass. - Greg

I always think the Sonar line-ups are odd, to be honest. Looking at the list below, and leaving aside those car thieves ON, you might wonder why has-beens Underworld are in there, for example. Or Fat Truckers? Or Darren Price? He's been so low-profile the last few years I thought he'd retired. Then you always seem to get the same old big DJ names playing - Mills, Garnier, Hawtin, Cox, Peterson etc - who although they're all good DJs in their different ways, are hardly going to be much of an event to the people attending. I reckon they all just like the festival so much they're willing to drop their prices to play there every year. But Robert is right, it's the little known acts, along with all the other parties and just the general atmosphere of the festival and the beauty of Barca, that are the best reasons for going. I'd love to go again but once again, lack of funds prevents it. I'll be in Barceloneta from the 4th to the 12th, moving up nearer the CCCB on the 12th for the festival. I'm sure there'll be some sort of 313 meetup whether formal or informal - you can't help but run into each other at the CCCB! The only really good reason to bitch about Sonar is the godawful mausoleum they moved Sonar Noche to from the Pavella de la mar Bella. The Pavella and the beach was a big part of the appeal. Who can forget being out on the patio when the Sun rises over the Mediterranean? (Extra special element for Americans: having the smell of clouds of cheap Hashish waft into your nostrils out on the patio.) Now, as for the lineup ... Sonar tends to be this odd mish-mash of the daytime (and night) IDM with the nighttime Big Name Bangin' DJs. I suspect this reflects the taste of the organizers along with a desire to crowd-please - i.e. the Spanish like their Techno hard and bangin', and nighttime Sonar has served up the goods quite well in that dept. the 3 years I've gone. This has led to Sonar being somewhat narrow-cast in range, as can be seen by the fact that the intersection of Movement/DEMF and Sonar is only Jeff and Rich. Want 313? Want Electro? Want Tech-House? Want insert your favorite sub-genre here? You won't get it at Sonar. Curiously, for the adventurousness of some of the bookings (I disagree with Ken Odeluga here - I can't wait to see The Soft Pink Truth [half of Matmos], for example), the organizers are playing it far too safe these days and aren't willing to consider anything special or out of the ordinary. For example, it's the 10th anniversary of Sonar - Rich wanted to do a 6-hour closing set at the Sonar Village at the CCCB (4-10) playing a 10-year retrospective. They refused and would only offer him his usual 2-hour banging set at night. G. That would've been kickass. - Greg

Sonar's main attraction is that it's slap bang in the middle of Barcelona. You can go and see a showcase of Mille Plateaux artists in the afternoon, retire to a tapas bar in the lanes for the evening, and then roll up at 3 am to see Jeff Mills. I'd much rather be seeing denham, vogel, d.diggler and villalobos (and many others) on a flyer than the others... Oh come on - it is a HUGE festival and its pedigree is enough to make me want to go without needing to see a line-up. A weeks holiday in Barca is enough to entice me anyway. If there's no acts there to attract you at all, you're no music fan. one important thing about sonar: sonar day is great for hearing new exciting music. great atmo. great vibes, and small stages make it very intimate. sonar nite is the other way around alot of people, bad atmo, sound system which sound too hard. not intimate events at all. and again the line up in the nite is for me at least boring. john digweed? carl cox??? my view of sonar was that it was essentially a 'music industry' event as with Midem in Cannes, Popkom in Cologne WMC in Miami. Not a festival per se like tribal Gathering, Homelands etc. But as with Miami the general public have become involved due to the extra revenue brought in. Vogel DJ'ed (as well as played with Super_Collider) at Sonar a couple of years ago. One of the best hard Techno sets I've ever heard. I picked up Vogel's Dungeon Master out on Tresor last night. I'd prefer to NOT be able to say that Daniel Bell I outdrew someone of FK's stature for a fraction of his fee. would fall under that label, this has always been a curious term however. I
would be interested to know what sound Mr. Tyreer would consider to be
tech-house as opposed to John Tejada's sound, for example. I know there may be
some issues with the term tech-house being used rather loosely by certain DJs in
the UK that I'm not fully aware of here in the state. In one way, it seems like
a lot of Detroit techno records could actually be called tech-house as they do
fall somewhere in between techno (esp. in the fullon banging sense of the term)
and house.

I thought John Tejada was one of the sets I enjoyed most at Sonar. I am not
aware of having heard John play before but I'll certainly look out for him
in future. The program described John as the most prestigous name in Tech
House. Is that right? What I heard him play at Sonar (and i dont know trax
to be able to name them) was not what i interpret as Tech-house. I believe
John is a member of this board and would be interested to know what style he

Its rather lame for me to say that i also rated Richie's as one of the most
enjoyable as I'm a well known RH groupie! Jeff Mills came on and played a
blinder, so I wasnt really expecting Richie to better it, particularly, as
of late, I've been disappointed with a lot of what Rich has played. His
first 10 minutes or so were spent showing off the remixing potential of
Final Scratch, but from then he really rocked, and it was definately one of
the best sets I have heard from that man in the last couple of years.
I was also impressed with Thomas Brinkman as Soul Centre and Fabrice Lig in
his Soul Designer guise who each played on either side of John Tejada. (And
to think I nearly didnt go on the Friday night . a night, where I also
then got invited to another party to hear the end of a 7hr Sven Vath set,
with an exuberant RH partying alongside.. which really put the icing on my
visit to Sonar!).
