[arr] Re: A.R.Rahman Religion Story

2008-01-30 Thread Ranojoy
Okay, I would never discuss these things here, but I owe it to A R
that I must clear obvious mistakes.
I must say that some of the info is pretty close to the actual
story, but isn't. Abdul Qadir Jeelani is a Muslim scholar from many
centuries ago, so the name of the guy is Kareemullah I think (I
think AR had KM studio in his honor).
The name issue I have discussed before. His name was originally
Abdur-Rahman or Abdul Rahman. For Roja, not his mom but K.
BALACHANDER requested that he use the muslim name. So A R R wanted
to use ONLY the initials A R as it sounded cool :) But Balachander
liked the ring of A R Rahman, and A R became Allah-Rakha which again
is actually a single name.
I know it sounds pretty fantastic, but this is the real story. I
hope you have seen in the past 6 1/2 years that I don't post
inaccurate info about A R :)

 The story:
After his father passed away, the burden of earning the bread and
butter for his family fell on Dileep's shoulders at the very young
age
of 11, and because of that, he had been struggling extremely hard
for
 some years.

His family went through a rough patch following his father's death,
which literally shook their world. He even had to work in amateur
Kannada plays at the age of 13, to earn money for his family.

Because of these hardships, sometime afterwards he stopped
believing in
the God. He believed that there was no God. There was a feeling of
restlessness within him. But later when he stabilized himself, he
found
that the concept of God in Islam was very appealing to him.

He learnt that there can be no life without a force governing,
without
God. And then he found what he was looking for - in Islam. It all
happened around 1988, when one of his sisters fell seriously ill,
with
similar inexplicable conditions as their father. Numerous attempts
to
cure her failed. Her condition progressively worsened. The family
tried
everything from medicine to religious methods like havanas and
prayers
 in the church.

The family had given up all hope; when they came in contact with a
Muslim Pir called as Pir Karimulla Shah Qadri or Sheik Abdul Qadir
 Jeelani Sahib or Pir Qadri.

The family had earlier gone to the Pir when Dileep's father had
similar
troubles, but were too late to save him. With Pir's prayers and
blessings, Dileep's sister made a miraculous recovery. Pir Quadri
advised the family frequently. It was Pir who taught them the
purpose
of life, and also led Dileep and his family members to accept
Islam.

Rattled by the bad experiences earlier in the case of his father
and
now his sister, and influenced by the teachings of the Pir and the
succor that they found in him, the entire family converted to
Islam. So
great was the influence of the Pir on the family, that Dileep
started
using the place which he had blessed first as his music room, and
later, when he started becoming successful, a studio. When the
family
shifted to their current house, they resolved to stick to the
devotion.
So he and his family - excluding one of his sisters - converted to
Islam. But it was not an instantaneous decision - it took them
whole 10
years to come to that decision.

The meeting with Pir was, for Dileep, an inner awakening and
cleansing.
He started feeling, that it is not about being Hindu or being
Muslim or
anything, but there is this one feeling and that is God - The
Almighty.

Both his father and mother were strong believers in Astrology. His
mother took him along once to an astrologer called Ulaganathan, in

She asked the astrologer to suggest an Islamic name for Dileep. The

Yea I got that :) I would have them on my list too.. Completely
strange vocals (other than the style) in some songs, although in
Arari Ariraro (Karuthamma) and Thirupachi Arivale (Taj Mahal) he
makes it work!
To Chord and others, of course A R R still makes excellent music.
That was not being disputed here. All I was doing was answering your
question of A R R living up to his standards (or not).
I do also believe that A R R built a fan-base based on his early 90s
music, and he must be true to the aspect of his music that is not
reliant on technology (the untouchable, abstract). In the name of
innovativeness, he cannot isolate the fan base completely. He doesn't
go back to his earlier work, but he has to go back within himself and
stay honest to that. And I believe he does that, and because of this,
although SEL's jazz sounds like jazz, A R's jazz still sounds
Rahmanesque.

Great translation.. Just a few points..
Saara sadaqa aap ka = All the *charity* is yours (Literal).. Or
the only meaningful charity is yours (Interpreted) .. Also, qalb
means HEART. Also Sooraj ka uthna hai aap se obviously shouldn't be
read for its literal meaning, but as, loosely, you are an integral,
active part of the Divine plan/destiny..
Needless to say the words are mostly directly Arabic.

One correction... this track is not exactly a Naat, it's a
Nasheed. Naat
is generally referred to any religious poems/shayari/verses.
Whether a Naat
contains music or not is completely up to the producer of Naat, it
doesn't
have to be one way or other. Usually Naats praise the God, but
when they
are specifically meant for prophet Muhammed(PBUH), they are called
Nasheeds. Therefore, this album has all Nasheeds.

Marhaba Mustafa is an awesome Nasheed, very simple yet spiritual.
 The one
thing different about it is the arabic rhythm/singing layered with
guitar/strings, and it has the regular harmonium and claps. It's a
soul-stirring song, as soon as I heard it, it kept on repeating it
my head,
it has that effect. Soulful singing by Rahman!!

Keith has always played the bass guitars.. I think maybe you are
thinking of the accoustic guitars (Prasanna, Kabuli, Neil

Raashid play electric guitars. The guitar in Only You is played by
Kabuli, but he can't pull it off for live shows apparently. That's

I met Rahman in 1988, when I was working for Music Director Raj

he had called me for doing jingles. He has always been a very

for
 me.* I
thank him a lot for getting me out of that hotel.

Each song of Rahman is a different experience. He is a very great

 Keith's speed

 wait more

They are totally different from recordings. You have to be

loves
 that.
My kinf od Jazz is little modern. Each person on the band

All his songs are so beautiful. Esp Chinna chinna Aasai, Pudhu

The style that we play with fingers is called peeking style.

Slab Base - Kadhal Sadugudu ( Alaipayudhey )

*8. Is there any song that you have not played for rahman ?*
( Laughs) That we have to ask him. Before, when Tamil, Kannada,

  9. *How many Children ?*

MY wife is a housewife. I have two children. But all the support

now . I
 come

 Just take

musicians.
 One is

The other

Yes. The song Oh Maria Oh Maria from Kadhalar Dhinam. we

 it . But
Rahman didn't like it . So we were trying different patterns.
Then
 we did

The reviews here are not so constructive either! five or ten people
writing many emails all super-praising the songs (not that there is
anything wrong with that!). Where are the rest of the opinions?

Isn't it surprising that A R R makes Naveen play the second verse of
Jashn at a higher octave and the flute slightly Carnatic-ally
throughout! The verses feel very much like A R's earlier work like
Pudhiya Mugham.. It is a VERY pleasant change to hear Naveen.. I
haven't heard the other songs in detail though! In the actual song, I
felt J A (who shares his initials with the movie, like the lyricist
ahem..) goes a bit off-pitch sometimes in the verses. I also wish
they'd change the lyrics of the refrain saare sahmey hawaaein hain
slightly everytime the tune is repeated.. But it is the most instantly
likeable of all the songs IMHO.

2008-01-01 Thread Ranojoy
Check the archives for stuff like this :) As you keep watching, you
will find the BGM that was later used as Aa Sikku from Gangmaster (on
flutes). In Bombay, you will find a BGM that was used as So Gaye Hain,
and also the Marathi/Gujrati (?) Folk song that was used in
Indira/Priyanka (Yeh Jaanti Paanti Kaisi).
Except for the last two cases, I find the BGMs better than the songs.

Re: [arr] Pls clarify - ARR Humming List

2007-12-20 Thread Ranojoy
Okay, there are MANY songs where A R R seemingly lends his voice
(many a time in the chorus). Give these a listen.
1. Iruvar, Vidhu Dalai Vidhu Dalai
2. Muqabala you missed the Ole O
3. En Swasa Thirakatha
4. Muthu Kokku Saiva
5. Kizhakku Chemayile Kathazhang (he seems to sing in the chorus
sometimes, just after the first verse ends for example) WHAT A SONG!!
thanks to Krish Ashwin, who pointed me the chords in the second verse
of this song, and the second interlude! PHENOMENAL.

There are MANY, MANY more like this, not all of which I can remember
off the top of my head. Some subtle ones like number 5 above.. There
are some in May Maadham I think.
This is where the old timers like Vij or Gopal can show off as
well ;)

 Yes. that is by ARR.
also the following pieces are hummed/sung by ARR
 1) Roja : chotti si aasha _ Yelelo
 2) Kilzhaku cheemayile : Aathangara marame.
 3) Muthu - Oruvan Oruvan
 4) Indian - Maya machindra - beginning, barely audible, high
pitched.
 5) Alai Payuthey - Pachai Nirame _ Sakiye
 6) Kadhalan - Urvasi - Marahaba :)
 7) Bombay - Kannalane - the sufi style
 8) Ratchagan - Lucky Luck - beginning, love the **@ ???
 9) Bombay - Halla Gulla - the piece in high pitch almost at the end,
 before the flute.
 10) Bombay Dreams - Bombay Dreams: just after the Market place noise
 ends Aaah...Aaaah
 Anything else ?

Of late, since ARR is singing more full-tracks, I guess this kind of
 hummings have gone down.

Also, the word is Sehmay not Sahan.. I doubt that it is either
Shafqat or Vishal. Sounds a lot like Sonu Nigam.. It's not Murtuza or

[arr] Re: AL - RISALAH

2007-12-17 Thread Ranojoy
Just type The Message in IMDB. The actors in the movie are major
Hollywood actors (of the time) like Anthony Quinn. The movie is
originally in English, but Ar-Risalah is the Arabic name of the
movie, and they kept the title for the Hindi-Urdu version I guess,
meaning The Prophethood.

Please post in proper English and not the chatting technique. It is
really difficult to read what you are trying to say. These methods were
invented so young people could chat faster on instant messengers (or
pay less money for txts, age-old technique from telegrams), and so
their parents wouldn't quickly figure out what they were saying if the
parents happened to glance on the computer screen. Neither applies to

[arr] Re: [Semi ARR] URGENT: How to save cassettes and CDs from fungus?

You need an air-tight container so that no moisture can get in. Like
a cookie jar, only larger, for your collection. Also you can use an

Obviously you can go extreme while building something like that ;)
Nitrogen purges etc., depending on how much you love your tapes.

Would like it if someone could post some of Aslam (Rajasthani's)
videos, for general viewing.. He was effortlessly singing the most
difficult songs, and took the mic off his mouth for breathers and
brought it back at the right moments for even a very fast song like
Rang De Basanti. Totally cool to watch, although he looks too simple
in real life.

Ni Main samajh Gayi, I can't understand what it's doing in the
concert lineup and why it wasn't scrapped instead of the other songs.
If Sukhvinder had to sing a fourth song, he could have sung Chinnamma
Chilakamma or something.

 Hi Gopal

Had it not been for Sukhwinder's creative urge probably 2 of the
skipped songs could have been accomodated. Sukhwinder needs to be
put
on a leash. He just dragged chiya chaiya, ramta jogi and ni samajh
gayi. although people enjoyed chaiya chiya they started to lose
patience during ramta jogi and especially ni main samajh gayi.

[arr] Re: NY Concert Song List

2007-06-17 Thread Ranojoy
I was at the show with Gopal Srinivasan.. He has the official song
list in the order in which they were performed.. AR's group arrived
only around 4 pm, and went to the show at around 6 pm for the mic
test and to rehearse the two singers Geoff Iqbal (Mitwa) and master
Bhattacharya (Yeh Tara) (who will also be at DC)..
The show started around 8:15 pm I guess with Jaage Hain.. Chitra
opening the show, and then Rahman coming in.. Next was Khalbali, and
some dancer knocked out A R's cheat sheet from the stage..
Most of the songs are covered already I guess.. There was a
variation of Ghanan Ghanan.. Solos by my friend Rashid, and by
Sivamani, with the bongo player (Gopal will tell you his name, Pat I
guess) etc. The Rajasthani singer Aslam absolutely absolutely gave a
stunning performance of Rang De Basanti and also had a folk solo,
and was part of Ni Main Samajh Gayi..
Because of time constraints, Chanda Re and Barso Re were knocked
off..
A R DID PERFORM NEW YORK NAGARAM.. The whole stadium went ballistic
for Vaaji Vaaji, which was the first tamil song, followed by
Sahara.. The cell-phone lighting was there for Pray for me Brother..
A R went to the piano for the song, then did the unplugged, with En
Kaadhale and other songs.. Humma Humma had the greatest reception,
(along with Chhaiyya) and VM to end the show.. Gopal and I thought
that A R said We'll skip Dil Se for this show and then immediately
sang Dil Se Re.
Ravichandran on Keys. Navin on Flute. An American (?) saxophonist.
Another western flautist. Kalyan on Cello. 1 Violon. Sivakumar on
the trigger with Pat (?) (also on Bongo). Keith Peters on Bass
guitar, Rashid on Guitars, Sivamani on percussion. Srinivas Moorthy
conducted. Backing vocals by Ishrath, Reyhana (also sang Chhaiyya),
Sayonara (sang Athiradee, Sa re Ga Me etc.), Tanvi, Naresh, and one
more singer (Dr).. Aslam (number 2) sang the Mayya chants (Neethi,
also for Ramta Jogi). Sridhar mixed (volume).
A R left for DC after the show.. I couldn't make it to DC as
planned.

2007-06-14 Thread Ranojoy
I'll hope he will perform New York Nagaram at the New York concert. I
also wonder how he is not performing Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera in front of
American and Canadian NRIs.
H. Sridhar loves Blaaze's 'sound' apparently.
If I had to pick singers, I would pick Shreya Ghoshal over
Madhushree, but I think the list is based on singers that have
featured in A R's song list, and based on who A R might personally
like.
I think Sonu Nigam would have been a plus, along with Udit. Sonu
Nigam is doing shows with Asha Bhonsle..

hey vijay, i would like to say that i do agree with the fact that

rahman. just like me. i really love rahman sahab, and thats why i
thought the concert was damn awesome. but if we really look at the
concert critcally, there could have been a few improvements; the
sound, memorization of lines, a host, no delays, sometimes we
couldnt make out what the singers and commentators were saying or
singing. I read someone reviewing the Oakland concert, the one i
went to, saying the audience made the concert more lively. i
wouldnt

I am surprised that ARR did not sing Anbe Aruyire, New York Nagaram,

A R R composed a few ORIGINAL themes for Fire.. And he scores
(original) for Bombil B as I mentioned before..
Deepa Mehta wanted to use the Bombay Theme, as well as have A R R
score the film.. She got both..
As a sidenote, A R R told me once that maniratnam wanted the score
of Yuva to sound like Boom.. After Boom bombed, they quickly changed
their ways.. You can see the influence in Dol Dol, which was
suppposed to be the only song in Yuva.. Maybe I've mentioned all
this before, but seems relevant given the Bombil connection..

A R R's group didn't have a visa as of last Sunday, so I am really
hoping it all works out.. He is headed back to Chennai again next
week I think..

[arr] Re: AR Rahman's hard work

2007-05-15 Thread Ranojoy
A R R records abroad only if there is an urgency or if, for example,
he is recording the Czech symphony orchestra and it costs more to
hire 144 men and women to come and record in India than for him to go
to Prague.. The mastering for all Indian projects is done at
Panchathan or AM, all the programming usually as well..
If you see people recording in NY etc., it's because the mastering
engineers are very good, and usually because the composers just
happen to be there at the time..

owns a complete new hi-tech studio to international standards in
Chennai. For that sake even other chennai music directors sometimes
do record songs bgms in abroad or other indian cities' studios when
there are hi-tech studios in chennai itself. Why is this practice ?
or What could be the fact other than reasons like chennai studios are
booked for some other movie projects on the dates required. Coz such

It's official now. AVM came up with
an announcement on Friday, the 10th of May on the release date of its
next Magnum Opus production - Sivaji.

The worldwide release date has been announced as 31st May.
Generally, expectations soar high where Shankar's movies are
concerned - it just got bigger with Rajini.
Sivaji will be AVM Productions' 168th movie. With Sivaji,
Rajini's will be completing his century in Kollywood. Another
interesting fact is, this movie is AVM-Rajini combo's 9 th venture
together. Incidentally this is Shankar's 8th movie, which happens to
be his lucky number.

If you suppose Rajini-Shankar-AVM combination is big enough, then
think again. Because all the biggies in their respective fields of
expertise have worked for Sivaji. Camera by KV Anand, art direction
by Thotta Dharani, editing by Antony, dialogues by Sujatha, music by
AR Rahman, lyrics by Vaali, Vairamuthu, Na Muthukumar and Pa Vijay
and stunts by Peter Haynes just to name a few.

AR Rahman's hard work seems to have obtained the desired results.
As Sivaji's songs, which are repeatedly broadcasted by all radio
stations, are now the talk of the town. The movie's BGM and re-
recording, which have come out exceptionally well and far more
superior have been done at London and Czech Republic's capital Prague.

Stunt master Peter Haynes' fight scenes have been made aiming at
perfection. KV Anand has used the latest technology Super 35 and
4K. It is the first time that 4K technology is being used for a
Tamil movie. Sivaji will also be the first Tamil movie to have more
number of prints than ever before. According to the press release
every teeny weeny bit of detail is taken care of.

 SPB rocks! You just can¢t believe that SPB is a man of his age;
where does all that energy, that zing come from. Does singing for the
Superstar turn on some kind of switch, it surely must. This song is
going to hit theaters like a hurricane. There is no stopping the
combination of Rajni-SPB and Rahman. This time you have Shankar
thrown in for good measure. You have to hear it, see it.to
believe it.

the songs leaking, he wasn't overly disturbed. Said we checked out
the songs.. it was in mono, so couldn't tell if it was the final mix..
you know, cds go around in the production.. someone must have just
ripped it and put up the songs online.. I did not ask about your
favorite questions, who sang Sunlight, or how many songs there were in
the movie.. AR likes this excitement that is generated anyway.

When I asked him about the release, he said it's tomorrow right?..
He has been wrong about releases before, because he is not always
aware of the dates. So even A R is not the based source for this info.

the Hariharan song sounds very good actually.. The second interlude

It happens to A R R because he is a high profile musician.

The hope is that there is a committed fan base like the people here

the real thing.

The USA concerts are almost finalized. I will try and bring more info
as things become clearer.

I cannot believe that songs are leaked out of A R's studio. Only a
few people that A R trusts immensely are ever allowed to hear or own
the final mp3s before release, and they would certainly not dishonor
this privelege. Whatever happens, happens probably after the mp3s are
sent to the directors.

[arr] Re: The making of the PFMB video

2007-03-02 Thread Ranojoy
Hey Dasun and Vij,
Thanks for adding your perspective on the issue. I wish every success
for A R R and his cause, which I am a silent part of, since his first
meeting at the UN headquarters in 2004 here in NY when he became the
ambassador.
The ultimate sign of right and wrong is the effectiveness of the
album with the public.

No matter how I feel about a song, I have never tried to influence A
R's creativity (and neither does ANYONE else who is close to him) or
the way he decides to interpret themes and ideas. Even in this case,
I am not saying that A R R is right or wrong in choosing a certain
type of music, just that I don't fully agree with it. At this time..
I have been wrong before about these things. I did not think that
Mayya Mayya could be number 1 on the Hindi countdowns, among other
things.

wrote:

I don't think PFMB is completely hip-hop. However, even if you take
the
section of the song that is rapped, it is not the social stigma
associated
with rap that we need to look at, but the message. I mean, I agree
with you
that a message like this conveyed through purely a rap medium
(which is not
the case here), may have lost the majority of its intended audience
even if
the message was good, but ironically, rap as a medium of art
originated out
of the need to express a sense of helplessness and frustration of
poverty,
and the situation of World Poverty is just the same problem with
greater
magnitude and therefore not too far from the origins of rap. So, in
that
sense I don't think ARR erred in his judgement in using rap.

Then, I think the fact that the intended audience that he is trying
to
influence, which would be the younger generation who will be
leaders of the
future world, are currently listening to hip-hop as the main source
of
popular art, would have been a key factor as well. Now I do not
advocate the
messages with which hip-hop music has become synonymous these days,
but I do
understand, that more than what the lyrics and the message of this
hip-hop
songs communicate, it is the rythm of hip-hop songs that infect and
draw
people to it. So, we should not dismiss a medium of art, just
because it is
associated with thugs and rowdy men who have little civility,
because those
are not attributes of the form itself, but its content. If an
artist can use
a form's ability to infect people to pass on a good message, then
more
strength to that artist for leading the way for others to follow. I
still
think of No Problem from Love Birds (1996) as a prime example of
how rap and
reggae was used to empower an audience. That's a great message
right there.

Another Day in Paradise is truly an al time great song with great
feeling in
the league of We Are the World and Heal the World, but that was
created with
an 80s feeling, but since this is the 00s, I think ARR is just
following the
trends just like PC did in 1989. I have great respect for Rano's
taste and
thoughts. Just wanted to share my view.

[arr] Re: Are Rahman's songs too hard to sing for the common man?

2007-02-12 Thread Ranojoy
An interesting thread.. I have heard this complaint as well.. Most
people are comfortable humming N-S or J-L songs, and no matter what
you say, some of their songs are lyrically and musically sweet (you
put it as cheesy) undoubtedly, and somehow has mass appeal.
With Rahman, replaying his music in your head, and actually
listening to it are two completely different issues. There is so
much to the music, so much has been thought out. For every song, he
seems to have found the best combination of chords to go along with
the melodies. His interpretation of music is entirely different from
other musicians, although the basics are the same. For example in
the song Tere Bina, when Chinmayee goes o o o o, tere bina just
listen to the chords.. there is a weird sinking feeling due to the
chords.. You feel it again when she sings the words Chaand bhi..

A R works incredibly hard.. He may not sound as melodious sometimes
because he is original and does not copy time-tested hits from other
countries.
Just my opinion..

--- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Ajit [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

For now, I'm speaking about his Hindi output. When I listen to
songs
like Ay Hairathe, Tere Bina, Lukka Chuppi, Tu Bin Bataye, Yeh
Rishta,
Yeh Jo Desh, Saawariya, Pal Pal Bhari, Desh Ki Mitti, Naina Neer,
Piya
Ho, etc. etc. etc., there is no doubt in my mind that no other
musical
director in recent times has created as powerful and moving
melodies
as our Boss. Nevermind the arrangements, rhythm, sound, for which
our
Boss is already king and known for it. There is an evergreen
stamp to
many of his recent melodies. However, I don't hear the media or
the
general public raving about his sense of melody too often. And I
think it's ignorant to say that Rahman should be known for his
technical skills rather than his tune skills. Without a doubt, the
man is a master tunesmith. I just don't see how people don't
realize
that when listening to the examples above.

One reason why his melodies may not be as appreciated as they
should
is based on a comment that my parents made recently after
listening to
some of Rahman's songs. They like Rahman a lot and know how
brilliant
he is, etc. However, they keep mentioning how the songs of today
in
general compared to the evergreen years lack powerful yet simple
melodies and moving lyrics. When I point to Rahman's songs, they
agree that his songs are melodious, but the THEY ARE HARD TO SING.
For them, that is the sticking point, that Rahman's songs are often
too difficult to sing (unless one is a trained and talented singer)
and one cannot hum them as easily. Seems like an overly simplistic
point, but perhaps to the commaon man, it's true. While Rahman's
songs are beautiful, full of melody, the melodic contours are often
full of twists and turns and tinged with a classical bent, making
them
difficult for the average person to just listen with ease and to
hum
along. I think this makes a difference with popularity. Many of
Rahman's most commercially successful numbers were ones that were
not
only catchy, but easy to hum along and sing with.

Maybe this is the reason why Nadeem Shravan were called the melody
kings (don't make me laugh too hard). Although their melodies
were
often stale and cheesy, their songs were easy to sing along with,
light and easy music for the common man to digest. Not that Rahman
has to ever stoop as low as NS, but perhaps there is a point here.
One of the reasons why the song Tere Bina is so popular is
perhaps
that along with being beautiful and brilliant, the melody itself is
fairly simple enough to understand and remember easily, esp. the
dham
dhara dham part. Same goes for Ru Ba Ru from RDB.

Anyway, agree or disagree, I think this will be interesting to
discuss.

I would include Mera Saaya, Kashmir Ki Kali(OPN with his horses),
Amar Prem, Aandhi (RDB), Guide(SDB) and from the last two decades,
certainly Saajan, Aashiqui (NS), Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (AM) (not
including ARR albums).. Shankar-Jaishiken have some fabulous songs
too.. I find Hu Tu Tu much better than Maachis personally, although
not an alltime great.. Anyway, his choice I guess. He also must have
been pressed for time. Oh well. :)

However, I am not sure about the authenticity of this list. I

Gems like Hum Dono (Abhi na jao chod kar, main zindagi ka saath,

I am no so sure that Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Sadma, Qurbani or Hero

[arr] Re: Interesting about Ey Hairathe

2006-11-30 Thread Ranojoy
Why is this not mentioned on the CD?

Ae Hairaten as a song is good, but Mujhpe Toofan Udhaye from Tehzeeb
was much better to me, lyrically and musically, being in the same
genre. I like Hariharan singing songs like Thottal Poo Malarum, but
sometimes he isn't the best choice. He is an awesome singer and a
very nice person. Always a smile on his face. Same goes for SP Bala
and Shankar Mahadevan.

If you remember (or as some of you will check), the world cup final
between India and Australia was played the same day as the LA
concert 3 years ago. The A R R group arranged for the game in the
hotel lobby. So there I was, with Sonu Nigam, SP Bala and wife,
Shankar M, H. Sridhar, Vasundhara Das, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Hariharan,
Sivamani (with a bongo or congo, although I don't know how many
chances he got at being jubilant. He gave us an excellent lunch
break though), and some of the dancers (A R R does not like
cricket). So these are the cricket-crazy people in A R R's
association. I left after Tendulkar got out in the first over or so.
Point is, I got to see some of these people at close range and found
especially the Tamil stars to be very modest people. Also, coming to
Sivamani, some cricket networks have paid him money in the past to
go to games and play the drums or percussion to get the crowds
excited.

Re: [arr] Help on Additional Programmer or Additional Arranger!!

2006-11-18 Thread Ranojoy
Programming refers to arrangements done on pro music software.. In A
R R's case, it's logic pro. Rahman does most of this work himself.
Some of the bass lines, rhythm or additional synth work is done by
the programmers, but the amount of work depends from song to song.
People who have played this role are Ranjit Barot, Pravin Mani, Josh
Sridhar, H. Sridhar, Rafee, Yak Bondy and GV.
Obviously both PM and RB are very talented. Ranjit Barot's
song khwahishon se from Holiday is very good.

[arr] Re: Did arr go to london in 80's ??

2006-03-30 Thread Ranojoy
WHY IS THIS EVEN AN ISSUE? Trinity is a school of music in INDIA,
started perhaps by the British, with a uniform standard all over
India.. A R R did level 7 and the day before he was to appear for
level 8, he got called by IR. This was in the early 80s. Look at the
Stanford video. He was ONE of IR's keyboardists for a while (VIJY
MANUEL was the primary one, although he himself thinks he is one of
many). G. V Prakash (AR's nephew, son of his sister Reyhana, and
programmer) has done all ten levels and so has Yuvan Shankar or
Karthik I think. I don't know if ARR had ever been to London before
Roja, but certainly his bands did rounds all over India.
There are many people on this group who know about trinity. Please
do not speculate and/or add non-verified info to his biography.
YES THERE IS ALSO A TRINITY COLLEGE IN LONDON.

[arr] Re: Michigan concert poster

2006-03-18 Thread Ranojoy
A R R will perform with students from ohio.. I am not sure if these
are the same kids who sang for the NY concert last time (a cheerful
lot, having met them, and huge fans of A R R (sang Chale Chalo
then)).. anyway, only these two concerts for now, and others in July
hopefully, but again, they may not be regular A R R concerts..

First of all, you have to be PRETTY good to work for A R R as far as
programming. So HJ is certainly good with programming work.. As a
composer, I haven't heard him much except Minnale..
BUT I DO THINK that the entire bass line of Endrendrum is pretty
close to the REAL SLIM SHADY by Eminem.. Any second opinions? how
did that happen??

[arr] Re: ARR's Favorite Keyboard??

2006-02-13 Thread Ranojoy
All sequencing is done in Logic and not on any keyboard. They are
essentially used as sound banks, and for live concerts, unless they
are specialized keyboards (this helps save a LOT of space in
studios). I have seen him sequence using Oxygen or Ozone MIDI
keyboards using the Protools Toolbox as a MIDI interface and he is
PHENOMENAL with them. Point is, he does not need sophisticated
equipment (hardware).

Re: [arr] dinner with boss in melbourne

2005-09-06 Thread Ranojoy
hmm.. from my experience with these, after every concert, the entire
group of performers has dinner with the producers etc. For the two
concerts where I have accompanied a r r (LA, NY last time), he visits
the dinner site for 5 minutes or so, and then leaves (because of his
special eating habits I think, and because he may be shy). IT MAY BE
DIFFERENT SINCE THEY ARE SELLING TICKETS FOR WHAT YOU SAY, but I just
wanted to point this out.

[arr] rising..

2005-07-14 Thread Ranojoy
first impression is that the album is extraordinary. it's very
westernized for the nature of the movie but the ambience exactly fits
anyhow! takey takey has overtones of oh darling yeh hai india I
guess.. Main vari vari.. the main tune is based on very western chord
progressions and a r changes melodies in ways not done in classical
indian styles. chords are too good.. rasiya.. the main chorus is
astounding.. again the backing chords and sound texture is amazing..
santoors in the background I guess.. saarangis, all sound great..
al maddath maula.. got to hear this first ;) excellent again.. murtaza
and qadir perform as usual.. the lines i mentioned before and the few
following lines are great. lots of strings..
overall the album is a lot more HAPPY than I would have expected.
upbeat, uptempo.. but the songs are catchy.. mangal mangal is an
excellent song as well..
i personally like the sound and the ambience of the album.. i would
put the sound as lucknowi or north indian traditional.. rasiya
chorus.. only a r r can do this I guess.
happy listening..

[arr] Re: 'Noor' Translation is here

2005-06-21 Thread Ranojoy

It seems from his movies that his ONLY intention in making movies is
objectifying women. Combined with his age, it's kinda scary. It's
stupid to hurt people's sentiments by trying to justify your own
perversions religiously. He did try to show a connection between the
noor you mention (24:35) and female beauty in the movie and hence
caused riots.
My opinions anyway.

I did try to translate 'Zikr' last time and it would be an honor
for me to translate Noor-un-ala-noor for the members, from the
limited capability and knowledge I possess. It's kind of you to ask
me to do so. Again, I am not perfect... but I regard this Qawwali
very close to my heart as it is can be seen as a 'Sangam' of MF
Hussain sahib's thoughts words and ArRahman's imagination and
music!

I am sorry that I was a little upset from comments which are made
by us sometimes unintentionally, with limited knowledge and without
thinking how it will have an impact on others, with similar quantity
of knowledge, which causes a chain reaction Therefore, we have
to know the true worth of our own words first... in order to
understand the depth in others' words. I am lucky to be part of this
group and want the best for all its members!

Noor-un-ala-Noor as I mentioned earlier is arabic for 'DIVINE'
light upon light like we say ... 'layers upon layers'... so
basically it is light upon light ...the only light of the DIVINE
that is everywhere... it can trace its roots from a verse in the
QURAN (1 :115) that says... To Allah belongs the EASTS and the
WESTS...Wherever you shall turn is the face of Allah for He is all
knowing and prevading.

The soul that we possess according to Islam are given to us by
God...originally it was breathed in ADAM, (the first human being
created with clay by God) ...who then put a soul in Adam. So you
see... we are Breath of the Divine Breath and when this breath
begins to emerge in its original form... it becomes pure .. and
clear being is found.

Just like us, everything around us that our senses can register,
are creations of God also...thus containtaning His Noor or His
Light. (Noor = Divine Light), thus LIGHT UPON LIGHT!

 So here goes the translation:

 chaaro.n taraf chaaro.n taraf nuur-un-alaa nuur-un\-alaa nuur-un-
alaa nuur
Everywhere Everywhere!... there is the divine lightlight upon
light !

 ye barq\-e\-tajallii a.ndhero.n ko chiiratii
This Tajali piercing through these darknesses!

(Tajali is arabic and is refered to the Divine sight that was made
by Moses on mount Sinai, who used to communicate with God from this
mountain without seeing Him)

yahaa.N bhii tuu vahaa.N bhii tu, ye roshanii kyaa roshanii
I find you Here ... I find You There... this Light!.. O WHAT a
LIGHT!

tere siwaa ko_ii hai ke puuchhuu.N
Is there a reason to ask if there is anything other than YOU!

a.ndhero.n se puuchhaa to chup ho gaye chup ho gaye
The darkeness became silent when questioned!

ujaalo.n se puuchhaa to sharamaa gaye sharamaa gaye
The brightness became shy when questioned!

pari.ndo.n se puuchhaa kahaa.N parawaaz hai
I questioned the birds ...where to, do your flights take you?

Kaamoshii se puuchhaa kahaa.N aawaaz hai
I questioned the silence ..where does sound exist?

 phuulo.n se patto.n se ra.ngo.n seaayii sadaaa
It was then...from the flowers , the leaves and the colors came
the same reply:

 chaaro.n taraf chaaro.n taraf nuur-un-alaa nuur-un\-alaa nuur-un-
alaa nuur
Everywhere Everywhere!... there is the divine lightlight upon
light !

I think I meant to say we (the yahoogroup) will have 2 concerts, but
I see what you mean.. :) haha. I might join a r r for the american
leg spoiling things here and there, but I am not useful in live
shows at all!
I didn't hear of australian shows yet. A R R is in London preparing
for the English shows I guess.
A R R wasn't planning on any shows, but wants to do it for the
Tsunami victims. A R R finds the English ambiance to be unfitting
for his film music for some reason, so those shows might be
different! We'll find out I guess. (Again Vij, we means us here)
take care

[arr] Re: ARR 's BGM in Swades

2005-04-19 Thread Ranojoy

It's all A R R.. Have you seen Mera Rang De from TLOBS? A R R is
truly incredible. There's a hidden irony and sadness in a r's music
that is abstract and beautiful, and no one can emulate that, because
it is a state of mind and not musical talent. That's what makes him
a good COMPOSER. If you hear Pavithra without watching the movie,
you can create many images in your mind, and then when you see the
movie, you can see that the songs are playing in the background and
are not well picturized at all..
A G makes a director's commentary for the entire movie to help guide
A R for the bgm.
I have seen A R play, and seen him compose, but I can truly only see
a very talented musician and nothing beyond that. Other than that,
he is a very normal and down-to-earth guy. How he gets these songs
to sound so good is a mystery.
I do think that the children's theme is a bit too much Adiemus.

As far as I remember National Awards is not yet announced for 2005.
 But wish ARR gets it.

  Dear ARR Fans,

Sorry if this mail is slightly off-track..

But I managed to see Swades only yesterday! Here is my take on
the
  maestro's BGM:

  1) NASA backdrop - easy one for the maestro.

  2) When SRK travels to India in flight. A great probing music,
that
conveys the mental turmoil of SRK coupled with nostalgic
feelings;
exactly what would be a better instrument than an accordion/mouth
organ. Simply stunning (also part of the title music)

  2) The fast-paced chorus when STK enters Charanpur in the
caravan -
what a music!!! It rightly captures the sentiments of curious
onlooker, the rush of excitement of SRK visitinig Kaveriamma..
Simply
brilliant - one of the finest ARR has composed MR's films I
guess.

  3) The flute + some Alaipyudhe kind of feel when SRK and Geetha
meet
often; potrays some kind of closeness/bond between the lead
characters.

Extremely happy that ARR has been awarded the best BGM for
National
  award (!)..
What a great visualization he has in sharing and easing the
burden of
the director in potraying the intricacies of the script. A great
  milestone in a music-composer's career.

[arr] Re: English Translation of ZIKR

2005-04-07 Thread Ranojoy

hey Noman.. excellent work.. I was stumped by some of the Urdu!
Dhikr also means rememberance.
The first part of the asma-ul-husna is YA HAYYUL YA QAYYUM I
think..
Hasbi Rabbi Jalallah; Ma Fe Qalbi Ghairullah~=Enough (hasbi) is my
Rabb, the Majestic (jalallah) for me, There is none (ghair) besides
Allah in my heart (qalb).
It's very similar to the meaning of Only You from VM.
And I also like the fact that Noman didn't resort to YE OLDE ENGLISH
in translating like the movie Swades!!! :)

  Hello all,

I have tried to translate the song Zikr. But first... I must say
though that it is not perfect... its almost like translating
Bhagvat
Geeta in English what counts more is the state of mind that
one
achieves by listening to it and how one's soul concieves it
and
reacts to it or dances to it...(in some cases)

Lemme start off from the word Zikr it can be defined in a
 couple of meanings...

  1. Rememberence of Allah (Almighty Supereme Being)

  2. To repeat Allah's name over and over again that starts from
the
tounge and eventually... sinks in the heart...then the
soul
and then Everywhere it can be seen and felt!!

It is the first time that Ar Rahman has actually come out of his
inner self and decided to declare in this song what just the names
of
Allah can achieve ..if they are just repeated over and over again
with an open and a clear heart... e.g mor me..listening to this
song
over and over againeach time a jewel was picked out from
it

now...one could argue that it is the way the song is made or
one could say that it is just a mirror where your rooh (soul)
sees
itself... clearer the reflection...clearer the image is...

Now... the most heard name you will hear throughout the song
(especially in the background heavy chorus) is :

ALLAH HU You all know Allah is the name for God in Arabic
and
He is what you could call Brahama or Ishvar ... the creator of all
 creationsthe Only creator...

Hu... is according to Sufism the FIRST WORD... it is infact
the
only word that exists...and it is mostly this name ALLAH HU that
is
used in Zikr Now if you notice the entire song is being sung
with
different lyrics...yet ALLAH Hu is constantly repeating

Nafs : the self of the human beings. It could be an animal
self ...pure selfetc. For proper answers look up these sites :
  1. http://www.geocities.com/naseehath/e30.htm
  2. http://www.rosanna.com/books/khanonrumi.htm

Now... let us proceed towards the song

  Zikr...

Ahl-e-talab aja tum ko bulai ahed Allah
o...those of you who are in thirst/need (talab)...come ..the
Onenes
 of Allah calls you!

zikr se burh ke nahin hai amal koiee hai farman-e-rasool Allah
There is no action superior to Zikr..it is the saying of the
 Prophet of Allah!

nijaat milti hai unko yaqeenan karein jo qalb se zikr Allah
Indeed those who do zikr from the depth of the heart are saved!

zikr se sur kat-ta hai Nafs ka beshaq zikr hai saif-ullah
head of the Nafs* can be chopped off from zikr ...indeed Zikr is
 Allah's sword

zikr aman hai zikr hai fatah zikr shifa hai zikr hai dawa
zikr is Peace...zikr is Victory...zikr is Healing...zikr is the
Cure

Allah ho baqimil qule fani aur fana hai sub wo muqab-Allah
Allah is the only eternal and immortal and rest is perishable
and
 to be returened to Him

  Hasb-e-Rabi Jallallah, maafi-qalbi gher-ullah

  noor-e-Muhammad sallallah, haq laillaha illallah
Light of Muhammad may peace be upon him...There is not other
Truth
 except Allah

  hu... Allah hu... Allah hu

Har gul mein har rooh mein, har shey mein noor-ullah
In every flower... in every soulin every creation is the
Light
 of Allah
  (*remember Noor-un-Alla-Noor from Menaxi*)

Har dil mein har pal mein reh zikr-e-illallah
May Allah's zikr stay in every single heart and in every single
 moment

zikr hai behtar nafrat se zikr hai behtar ghaflat se
zikr is better than hatred...zikr is better than ignorance..

zikr hai behtar hujat se zikr hai behtar gheebat se
zikr is better than fantasy...zikr is better than back biting

  Hasb-e-Rabi Jallallah, maafi-qalbi gherullah
  noor-e-Muhammad sallallah, haq laillaha illallah
Allah hu Allah hu, la illaha illallah

Ya Qayum ya Qayum Ya Qayum
