Re: CMDB/DSL - Cleaning Up Product Dictionary Entries
Hi Michael - No solution for you, but we will likely do something similar. We've done some editing of the DSL behind the scenes, using the forms you've already mentioned, and have not seen issues. We'll likely build our own maintenance form(s) as well for any future DSL updates. Having said that, we put in an RFE for better overall DSL management capabilities, including the ability to categorize the software as you like, instead of just Software-Application-Third Party, which does zip for our reporting. The more RFE's they get on this, the more likely they'll beef it up I would think. Cindy ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org ARSlist:Where the Answers Are
EIE 7.0 Issues (hanging + API Error)
Listers - Having issues with EIE 7.0 hanging after working for about a week. I have several active data exchanges which worked until 2 days ago, then just stopped. Have debugging on, and after restarting EIE service, eiemain.dbg would just show Starting to look for changes to data exchange definitions and then nothing more. Since this is a dev server, eie.cfg has a ConfigInterval set to 1 - but it never continues to check each minute, it just seems to hang. I rebooted the box this a.m. (Windows 2003 server), and got the following in eiemain.dbg (see below). Two things to note: API error and the fact that after 9:43, it never cycled again to look for changes. I tried looking up the API error, no luck. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm stuck! DST changes this weekend
With the US and many other countries changing from back DST time this weekend, I was wondering how other admins handle the change. We have users and support groups in more than 100 countries and twice a year our admin team had to manually update business hours. Only a few support groups are 24x7. To complicate things, some countries change at different times, while other countries go the opposite direction later this year (Ex: Brazil on Nov. 5). We are currently on a custom system but I am wondering if ITSM handles this automatically or if manual updates are required. Do you need to update the business hours ? Converting Remedy Datetime for SQL Query
Fellow ARSList Members I need to convert the Epoch time format that Remedy stores its datetime data into a more readable format for an SQL query. According to an older KB article I have from Remedy, Remedy recommends using DATEADD(day, h.Cinsert field id-2440588, '01/01/1970') to format what they store as 1161641694 into 10/23/2006 6:14:54 PM. The article also claims I have to add h.Cinsert field id IS NOT NULL and h.Cinsert field id 2440590 to the where statement of the query. The following is the SQL query I am running based on the KB article. select h.C1 as Case ID, DATEADD(day, h.C3-2440588, '01/01/1970') as Arrival Time, from T87 h where h.C1 = 'HD367848' and h.C3 IS NOT NULL and h.C3 2440590 When I use this query, my Microsoft SQL Server 2000 returns Adding a value to a 'datetime' column caused overflow. Does anyone have the correct string to use in a SQL query to convert the returned date/time values into readable date/time format. After some testing I then added this user to the local Admin group and also added the employee's domain\username to the local Admin group. Local accounts do not have access to connect to our remedy web server, only authenticated domain users. With each attempt the Windows login prompt was presented. When I provided my network credentials the web app knew that I was using my login name and not the local user. I then attempted to Run As IE as the local account user (logged into Windows as me) and entered the URL in the address field. The web app knew it was me. I then logged into Windows as the local account and ran IE with Run As me. Same result. The web app checks the domain when logging in. All our employees are in the same domain, so checking here is easy. For companies that have multiple domains additional checks would need to be done. You could also track a lot of details regarding the SSO web app session, such as IP address, computer name, etc. If someone successfully spoofed a login [to get into Remedy only] in the logging file/table tracks could lead back to the culprit. The only thing I didn't try was to rename my computer to the name of the domain. This may present the web app with domain\username, however the Remedy web server still wouldn't allow access without a valid domain account login. To spoof the web app I think that either the browser or .Net libraries would need to be hacked. Or, if they somehow intercepted calls made to HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name from the web app and interjected a new value when sending data back to the web server it might work. Can't say for sure, but if someone can hack into this they may also be able to hack into LDAP authentication as well. A few weeks after the decision was made not to purchase I began reading more and more posts about implementing SSO. I gleaned some ideas from Listers and determined that I was going to find a solution. It didn't take long to see that this would work. It may not be applicable in certain companies/organizations (ie. top secret government work), but I suppose it could be useful in about 90% of Remedy installations. Re: NEW: Open Window Actions Blocked - Other Methods?
Craig, When there was a way around popup blockers, other people would use that as well and that way the popup blockers would not be of much use. If your users are all in a windows domain you can try talking to the Windows team, they can push a policy setting where your mid-tier domain would be allowed to show popups. If you do not have control over your users clients you could choose not to open new forms but include display only fields on the current form, maybe with a different color or something, to display those messages. This way you would have no popups so also no problems with popup blockers. -- Michiel On 10/27/06, Carter, Craig J Civ ARPC/DPD [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: ** ARS 6.3 P16 ServletExec 5.0 AS Windows IIS We've built several web applications that open new windows (another Remedy form) to display informational messages, get feedback, etc. Our customers are worldwide and many of them are using ISP-provided browsers and tools that prevent Javascript popup windows from being displayed. Re: MS/SQL - does 1=0 filter push action table scans
David, there have been lots of discussions about this in the past. the outcome was that even Oracle does not perform a table scan on this. For more info please search the archives. If you would like to find out how MS SQL2000 does this you could use the SQL Profiler tool which should be installed on the server or at least at the DBA's workstation. MORE IMPORTANT: there is no real need for the use of 1=0. If you want a push fields action to always create requests, you should leave the field under Push Field If empty, and select If No Requests Match: Create New Request. This would always create a new request. -- Michiel On 10/28/06, David Chan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all I am trying to confirm... Then it works because with that, actions are executed in the desired order, because normally, without '!, push fields actions are delayed into a later phase and executed as a bulk after the Set Fields actions. Re: Client Application SSO (U)
Dylan, The Remedy SSO interface requires additional configuration and programming on mid tier. From what I have read (here and elsewhere) and conversations I've had this is not trivial. Two mid tier-specific products I reviewed cost $15K - $20K for SSO, plus annual support. The SSO interface in mid tier is not an out-of-the-box implementation - although it should be. If you have a quick and easy solution for mid tier SSO, please let us know how you got it to work and your environment. My mid tier environment: ARS 6.3 Windows Server 2003 IIS 6 ServletExec 5.0 Regarding SSO for the Windows User Tool, you can set it to cache your Remedy password. In many organizations this is considered a security risk that is too high. I have previously researched developing an SSO solution for WUT. It's on hold for now as there are other projects I need to work on. I plan to get back to the SSO for WUT project in a few months. Marc, Just a quick comment: Regarding You first real API call (ARGetListSchema), or a call to ARVerifyUser, will actually test out that the server/user/password is fine., in my login routine I attempt to generate a GUID immediately after login. ARInitialization simply setus up some client side state, and in general won't fail. It doesn't actually connect to the server. You first real API call (ARGetListSchema), or a call to ARVerifyUser, will actually test out that the server/user/password is fine. First of all, you should not use the C API without RTL. (http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/rtl). It will reduce your C code below by 80 or 90% and make it much more bulletproof. Everything you've done would be about 8 lines of code (see below). To see why and another comparison, go to http://rtl.sourceforge.net/doc. With rtl, you won't have to worry about freeing status lists, allocating memory, testing errors after every call, doing expensive lookups with for loops, etc. I cringe looking at how verbose and error prone API programs are without it. That is my ultimate goal. So if anyone has any experience with that or knows where some sample code is, I'd appreciate it. I'm going to use ctypes to make the dll calls and am building the structures. However, I've hit a wall so far with Python so I decided to run some example code in C and follow the process. I don't understand what is happening here, so I'm hoping someone could explain it to me. I am running the example given in the Remedy API documentation (with a couple of small modifications): Let me start off by saying that the code works, however almost seemingly by accident. The problem is when I step through it using Visual Studio, it doesn't respond like I thought it would. Here's the problem: Right now I have the application set up to fail at the initialization stage. So at Step A (marked below) I should see a failure after the ARInitialization call is made. However that is not the case. Instead I get back a response of '0', and it does not fall into the exception loop. Instead it moves on and attempts the ARGetListSchema call. At Step B is when the error for the initialization is actually recognized. So then it falls in the exception loop, prints out the error that was supposed to be printed in ARInit loop, and finishes execution. This also means that the status list is not being freed like is supposed to happen during the FreeARStatusList proc. It's still there when the next function is called. So in the end the application does work, but it's not failing at the correct place. So until I understand how this is supposed to properly work, there's no way I'll be able to get it interfaced over to another language. Does anyone know what either I or it is doing wrong? Thanks, Marc // ARS.cpp : Defines the entry point for the console application. // #include stdafx.h #include ar.h #include arextern.h #include arfree.h void printStatusList(ARStatusList *theList) { unsigned int i; for (i=0; i theList - numItems; i++) { if (theList - statusList[i].appendedText == NULL || theList - statusList[i].appendedText == '\0') printf(%s, theList - statusList[i].messageText); else printf(%s:%s, theList - statusList[i].messageText, theList -
Re: Auto guest user
Maxim, What we use here is the person's network login for both Guest and tech logins. These are tied to data in our Active Directory. With Guest login, we can tie the login to the individual's name, phone number, email address, etc. It also provides the ability to search for past tickets opened for that person's network id. In our link's to lookup tickets or create a new one, we encode the login in the url string. Not sure why you would want to generate a random login. This makes the linkage described above impossible. Maybe you can explain to us a little bit better why you would want a random login. ** Hi James, Clarity only has one method to integrate with it, that is via XML using the Clarity XOG (XML Open Gateway- developed jointly by Niku and Xinify) so yes you are on the right track. Xinify has integrated Niku/Clarity with Remedy since before the days of web services in Remedy. Back then we had to jump through hoops to export the data, convert to XML then import. Muchmore straight forwardthese days :). Are you wanting to import time sheet data to associate with Clarity projects, integrate projects to change requests? We've done both. Upgrading and switching platforms at the same time

We have a mostly-customized ARS system, but have installed the Asset Tracking module. Two approaches: 1. Install Oracle on the new machine. Install ARS on the new machine. Export all the form and workflow definitions and form data from the old system and import it into the new. 2.Copy the present Oracle database from the old machine to the new. Rename the database and upgrade it. Install ARS. The second approach sounds easier. Any pitfalls that we should be aware of? Re: EIE 7.0 Issues (hanging + API Error)
** Hi Cindy, The setting to 1 minute in the eie.cfg is too frequent. By default it is set to check every 5 minutes. This setting determines how often EIE creates new threads and deletes old ones. I think it is probably falling over from all the created/delete. If you set it to 1440, it will check once a day. It is recommended that you set it to at least 60 minutes. Re: Direct SQL - How can I use a $TIMESTAMP$ reference?
Leigh, Try the following statement (I've substituted a SQL-based calculation of epoch time for the $TIMESTAMP$ value): SELECT count(*) FROM Issue WHERE Customer_Abbreviation = '$Customer_Abbreviation$' AND Create_Date (ABS(DATEDIFF(ss,GetUTCDate(),'1970-01-01')) - ($Threshold Days$ * 24 * 60 * 60)) ABS(DATEDIFF(ss,GetUTCDate(),'1970-01-01')) represents the current date and time in epoch time. I'm assuming $Threshold Days$ is already an integer value; if not, you may need to include a CAST function to convert it from a varchar to an int. Hi, Mike: You're right. It's not there. I've been informed by tech support that, it appears that our customers will no longer be able to submit such RFE on the web anymore. paraphrased Although, I've been told by the BMC Product Line Manager that it was unintentional, they can't say that there is a plan to reimplement this functionality. Since, BMC was already considering having all enhancement requests flow through Customer Support. /paraphrased Submit your enhancement requests as you would your other incidents through the support site. Re: Not allow users to close a form
There are several reasons for this need. 1. Users who think they know everything and always close the Support Console, then call me when they can not figure out how to do something that was on the console. 2. I run several interval active links on the console to do checks and to run a news ticker, this will stop when the User closes the form. Also the news ticker is suppose to be required viewing by the manager for sending emergency news to the users. 3. Some users never close their clients, so I always get calls after a change is made to the system from users that did not get the change (also their client cache files mess up more then users that close their clients). So I have used interval active links on the console to close the users client every day at 11pm. Now all my users always pick up the changes and the amount of corrupt client cache files has gone way down. The browser interface doesn't enable selecting a row in the pool. One can click wherever one wants and nothing is highlighted inside the pool. The first click on the pool causes the buttons to appear. The result of the first invocation of the Add button is an attachment displayed in the top row of the pool. A second invocation of the Add button results in a dialog asking whether one wants to replace the first attachment with the newly specified one. This is probably true for some browsers. Seems that some do not store https info in browser history, though I do not know of a standard that would prevent this and I would not expect all browsers to act the same. All in all, it's not a secure method to pass credentials that should otherwise be private. Brian, Is the 'Sign In Date' field a date/time field or a date field? If it is date/time (even if it is only set to display as date-only), then your qualification would only prevent multiple requests from being created for the current user for given second of the day, *not* for the given day. If this is the cause, you should be able to correct this without converting to the date field type by using this modified qualification: ( 'Submitter' = $USER$) AND ( 'Sign In Date' = $DATE$) HTH, --Thomas - Original Message - From: Sokol, Brian [EMAIL PROTECTED] Newsgroups: gmane.comp.crm.arsystem.general Sent: Monday, October 30, 2006 11:11 Subject: Push Field Problem I am trying to create some simple time auditing based upon when forms are opened. Re: Push Field Problem
There is a bug related to this, I can't remember if it was corrected in a 5.1.2 patch or in version 6.x possibly... Essentially, the $DATE$ keyword is resolving to Unix epoch seconds instead of the correct value for date fields (# of days since Jan 1, 4713 B.C.). As I recall, the bug only affected using $DATE$ in a workflow qualification with a date field (the $DATE$ keyword should work correctly as a set fields value for a date field). I believe the workaround I used was to set a hidden display-only date field to $DATE$, then use this field in place of the $DATE$ keyword in the qualification. For example: Set Fields: 'zTmpDate' = $DATE$ Subsequent 'Push Field If': ( 'Submitter' = $USER$) AND ( 'Sign In Date' = 'zTmpDate') HTH, Thomas - Original Message - From: Sokol, Brian [EMAIL PROTECTED] Newsgroups: gmane.comp.crm.arsystem.general Sent: Monday, October 30, 2006 11:43 Subject: Re: Push Field Problem It is a Date field. ** I think you can run an unlicensed AR Server with ITSM apps up to, but not including, ITSM 6.0. Capture Path of Document (File Chooser)
How might I capture file location with User client? Request is to implement a file chooser, such as with typical application using File Open. Instead of opening the document, simply want to capture the location at the which document was found. As a possible solution, I considered letting person attach document to attachment pool and then get location using SET Field action. Problem was encountered when file was in network share. The capture path was in TEMP folder within windows profile. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org ARSlist:Where the Answers Are

Re: Newb needs API help...couple of questions
** Thanks for all the help! I had not scoured sourceforge yet and, by the Beard of Zeus, someone has already done a Python interface. Very good news indeed. I was able to install it, run it, and start getting results almost immediately. Apparently it's also using ctypes to interface with the DLLs. I was rather close but was not aware of the magical '.value' extension that is required to access the contents of a char pointer. However I'm not interested in re-creating the wheel, so the fact that it's already out there saves me tons of time. For those that use this though, I did have a problem actually with the example shown in the documention. The ARGetSchema helper function didn't work. First it's using the variable 'schema' and trying to reference it without a definition. And then some of the fields within the structure were being called with incorrect definitions. I started trying to fix the problems, but then wondered if maybe there's another file that I need to reference. I don't need this function at the moment, but I'm worried that if there's another file that I don't have correctly configured I may have problems elsewhere. Did anyone else who uses pyARS have this problem? MarcOn 10/30/06, Dirk Reiter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Marc, there is a python module called pyars that covers most of the ARS API and CMDB functions.http://sourceforge.net/projects/pyars/We use it for automizing migration stuff for ARS and find it quite useful and stable. // #include stdafx.h #include ar.h #include arextern.h #include arfree.h void printStatusList(ARStatusList *theList) {unsigned int i;for (i=0; i theList - numItems; i++){if (theList - statusList[i].appendedText == NULL || theList - statusList[i].appendedText == '\0')printf(%s, theList - statusList[i].messageText);elseprintf(%s:%s, theList - statusList[i].messageText, theList - statusList[i].appendedText);printf((ARERR %d)\n, theList - statusList[i].messageNum); printf((Type %d)\n, theList - statusList[i].messageType);} } int main(void) {ARControlStruct control = {0,0,TEST_REMEDY,TEST_REMEDY02,,0,,TSTREMEDY01};ARNameList formNameList;unsigned int i;unsigned int ARInt; unsigned int ARGetInt;ARStatusList status;ARInt = ARInitialization(control, status); --STEP Aprintf((ARInt %d)\n, ARInt);if ( ARInt = AR_RETURN_ERROR){printStatusList(status); FreeARStatusList(status, FALSE);return 1;}FreeARStatusList(status, FALSE);ARGetInt = ARGetListSchema(control, 0, AR_LIST_SCHEMA_ALL|AR_HIDDEN_INCREMENT,NULL,NULL,formNameList, status); --STEP Bif(ARGetInt = AR_RETURN_ERROR)printStatusList(status);else{for (i=0; i formNameList.numItems; i++)printf(%s\n,formNameList.nameList[i]);}FreeARStatusList(status, FALSE);FreeARNameList(formNameList,

Re: multiple attachments in pool on mid tier?
Title: Re: multiple attachments in pool on mid tier? ** Doug, This is exactly what happens when you do not select another row in the pool before clicking the Add button. You have to click the row below the file column header (far left column)clicking under any other column will not allow selection of the row. The individual row permissions must be set as well as the overall attachment pool. Since you are not selecting a different row in the pool, it prompts to see whether you want to replace the existing file. It doesnt sound like anything is wrong. You need to verify the permissions for each row of the pool, make sure you are opening the page in submit mode, and make sure you are selecting the row beneath the file column header before clicking the add button. Unless its one of these things, Im not sure what to tell you since it should work. If its working for the first row, youve confirmed it works as expected so my guess would be the additional rows in the pool do not have the proper permissions or you are not clicking in the pool under the proper header. Hi Rocky, Michelle, Craig, et al., It's not a permissions issue and yes, we're using the built-in Add, Delete, Display buttons. It's not my application, so I won't carry the investigation any further at this point. I'll be interested to see whether the issue evaporates when we (eventually) upgrade to 6.3 or 7.x ARS.
