The Audiolab M-DAC looks interesting enough that I've pre-ordered one
(sight unseen). It's chinese manufactured, but the designer (John
West) is a respected digital engineer, and the (early) reviews have
been generally favorable. Lots of discussion about the M-DAC and the
new Audiolab 8200 series in the Pink Fish Media forums, which John West
has been active on.

However, I'm still learning how to interpret all the graphs (especially

Having replaced my SB3 with the Touch (both feeding a Benchmark DAC-1),

think many will go for sources that can provide such support.

Also many believe, for good reasons, that most is gained from
increasing the bitdepth from 16 to 24 which as we know is supported.

Well said!

Slim/Logitech needs to be working on the SB4, with 24/96 (ideally
24/192) streaming. That, paired with a Benchmark (or equivalent 24/192
DAC), would be the cats meow! If they don't stay competitive, Sooloos,

the Controller and your own choice of DAC. I currently have a Benchmark

the high-res download market will really take off in the next year or
so, and Slim/Logitech needs to offer a slimmed down device to be
well-positioned for that market. Otherwise, I'll be looking for
another audiophile-grade product that fills that niche.

I use that particular track extensively, whenever tweaking my speaker

They run it three times- left and right channel up, left to right

heard it properly until I got my ML Summits, and optimized their
positioning. Once you achieve that level of soundstage detail, there's
no going back! IMHO, this single test track separates the audiophiles

Here's a link to that Chesky CD. Unfortunately, they don't have an mp3

One caveat though, folks ordering from Chesky direct have reported lots
of problems with tardy order fulfillment. I suggest using a more
reliable source.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best digital output... Coax or Tos?

2007-09-29 Thread sleepysurf

One MAJOR advantage of Toslink over coax (for me) using a WIRED
Squeezebox, is that TOSlink isolates my audio setup from potential
surges (e.g. lightning strike) coming in via my Cat5 network
connection. I am feeding my SB2 to a Benchmark DAC-1, and couldn't
appreciate any difference between a quality coax vs. (glass) TOSlink.
The optical connection adds an extra layer of electrical isolation for
my entire audio chain.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: S/PDIF sounds poor

2006-08-17 Thread sleepysurf

Well, I spent a couple hours investigating this further tonight. In a
nutshell... RANDOM result.

First off, I had pulled the transmitter off the top of my permanent
doorbell chime, trying to determine how it works, what frequency, etc.
When I put it back tonight, I couldn't (initially) get it to to trigger
at all with my In Trutina test track. After replacing the batteries,
and adjusting it's exact positioning a bit, finally got it working.

I tried five repetitions of the test, using coax out to my Benchmark
DAC, with mute off, then on. This time, I got random results, with
the chime ringing once (sometimes even twice), or occasionally not at
all, even before changing the mute setting. Having the analog RCA
cables attached or not did not matter.

However, I found that if I adjusted the Benchmark volume attenuator ONE
click up or down, I could turn on or turn off the effect pretty
consistently, regardless of whether the mute was invoked.

When I posted my initial chime observation a couple days ago, I had
only done two repetitions of the test, and quit, since I had 100%
consistency on my findings.

In retrospect, I should have done a few more repetitions to be sure. I
think what happened is the Benchmark Volume setting was straddling the
range that can trigger zero, one, or two, rings, possibly depending upon
where I was standing during the test.

I still think the analog muting DOES have audible improvement (in my
setup), but can no longer offer my chime extender as objective
proof.

Hopefully somebody with an oscilloscope, or some other more objective
measure, can definitively prove whether or not the mute tweak is real,
or just a ding-dong theory. :)

andy_c Wrote:
Q for sleepysurf: Is there a cable connecting the analog out of the SB

If so, try the experiment with this cable disconnected.

If there is no such cable, or the problem persists when the cable is
removed, try using TosLink between the SB and Benchmark. That will
prevent conducted EMI between the two boxes.

Late day at work, no time for testing tonight. However, to answer the
above question, YES, I actually have BOTH the RCA analog out and
TosLink digital outs feeding my Yamaha RXV-1000 (which I alternately
use). The Digital coax is going direct to the Benchmark DAC.
Complicating things further, I am using a Niles AXP-1, to switch
between the Yamaha and Benchmark, feeding my amp. Tomorrow night I'll
have (a little) time to test the effect separately with isolated
outputs.

I've glanced over the various postings on this topic, and opinions seem
to go both ways re: ? improved sound. I posted my doorbell chime
extender observation solely because, IMHO, it offers *objective* proof
that *something* has changed. BTW, I'm not entirely sure how the chime
TRANSMITTER works. It has 4 AAA batteries, and physically sits on top
of my main doorbell chime box. There is a small opening which might be
a microphone or some other sensor, and when it hears the main doorbell
chime, it sends a wireless signal to the RECEIVING unit, which is A/C
powered, and located at the back of my house. The RECEIVING unit is
the one that I hear ringing (or not) depending upon whether the mute
trick is invoked. Perhaps a phone call to Heath-Zenith can answer some
questions re: the technical aspects.

Clearly, more testing is indicated.

2006-08-15 Thread sleepysurf

If I disconnect my speakers, the doorbell doesn't ring, so it's not
spurious noise from somewhere else in my audio chain. It's clearly
triggered from the speakers hitting a certain high note. I just played
around varying the Benchmark volume control, and *can* trigger the
doorbell (even WITH the analog muted), if I crank it up just a bit, so
perhaps there is a slight decrease in S/PDIF output gain when the Pre
Amp Volume Control is set to 63. Perhaps there is something else in my
listening room resonating, and amplifying that particular note, but I
doubt my wife will let me strip it bare one item at a time g.
Unfortunately, I've gotta run to a meeting, and am working late
tomorrow... will continue experimenting Thurs.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Tube Pre-Amp or MF X-10 Tube Buffer?

2006-08-13 Thread sleepysurf

Oops, just stumbled back upon this thread, and realized I never posted a
f/u.

In a nutshell... tried the MF X-10, which indeed softened the highs,
albeit sounding syrupy, but it really muddied up the bass (at least
to my ears). I returned it (one of the benefits of buying NEW from a
reputable dealer!)

I subsequently borrowed an Art Audio VPS DM tube pre, which was warmer,
but articulate in the mids and highs, yet still muddying up the bass
slightly (though less than the X-10).

Next up, I plan to finally try the Modwright SWL 9.0, a tube/SS hybrid
design, which supposedly retains tight bass output.

Further mucking up my decision-making is the upcoming release of the
Transporter. However, the ONE thing apparently lacking in the
Transporter (? fatal error) is a Home Theater bypass loop. That
precludes truly using it as a preamp (at least in MY system).

I ditto the DVD solution. I have a relatively cheap Toshiba DVD player
that I use for the occasional CD that I can't wait to rip in order
to listen to. However, IMHO, the SB beats the pants off any other

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Tube Pre-Amp or MF X-10 Tube Buffer?

2006-05-18 Thread sleepysurf

Actually, overall, I'm VERY pleased with the Squeezebox paired with the
Benchmark. The Benchmarks razor sharp resolution was exactly what I
found lacking with the stock SB. Together, they bring out the best in
95% of my collection. However, the remaining 5% are older or poorly
recorded redbook CD's, with an exceptionally harsh digital sound.
It's probably foolish to think the X-10 will make those 5% more
listenable without deleterious effects on the other 95%. I'm looking
forward to an extended listening session this weekend, and will report
back.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Active Speakers

2006-05-15 Thread sleepysurf

Further f/u on the Swan S200A's... apparently this last batch is
BURGUNDY, with piano black (and possibly other colors) available in the
future.

Upon further listening, I must say these speakers are INCREDIBLE...
even rivaling my Martin Logan mains for transparency and detail. They
also put out tremendous bass for only a 5 woofer. It's a shame I have
to mount them high up on cabinets in my game room.

My only complaint is that the power is not auto-sensing, and must be
manually toggled off with the switch inconveniently located in back.
Since mine are too high to reach, I am using a switched surge
protector.

As for the balanced inputs... not sure if they are TRUE balanced, but
it's a moot point for me, since I'm just feeding the SB's RCA's into
them.

I anticipate some RAVE audiophile reviews, once folks get their
hands/ears on these beauties.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Active Speakers

2006-05-14 Thread sleepysurf

Well, I just got my pair of Swans S200A's, with a few surprises!
-The finish color was NOT Black and Ivory (as advertised), but rather
VERY DARK ROSEWOOD, with a machined aluminum baffle. Actually this
COLOR is richer looking, and the aluminum baffle matches my decor
better. The overall fit and finish is superb.
-They include both RCA and BALANCED audio inputs (definitely
audiophile grade).
-The speakers that arrived had clearly been returned and reshipped,
? possibly because the finish was not as expected.

My total cost (incl shipping) was $381.

As for the sound... VERY impressive. Surprisingly deep bass and
crystalline mid-range and highs, with excellent imaging. Definitely
audiophile sound, despite my using them high up on top of wall
cabinets, in a secondary system.

Despite being an apparent open box item, with a different finish than
expected, I plan on keeping them, as they work magnificently with the
SB2.

I have attached a pic of one of the speakers here, for those who want
to compare it to what their website shows. Before ordering any, I
would suggest emailing Jon at theaudioinsider.com to clarify the issue
of finish, etc.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Benchmark DAC1, the next step ?

2006-05-13 Thread sleepysurf

I'm feeding my SB2 to a Benchmark DAC-1, then DIRECT to my Amp.
Stepping up to the Benchmark brought SUBTLE improvement, evident only
on some recordings. Actually, bypassing my Pre, and feeding the
Benchmark DIRECT to my Amp brought MUCH greater improvement. Whether
the Benchmark offers $975 worth of sonic bliss is an individual
decision. For me it was worth it.

I now have a Musical Fidelity X-10 on order, and will see if it offers
that last bit of sweetness that I crave in my system. If so, for a
TOTAL outlay of $1600 ($200 for wired SB2, $25 for Elpac linear PSU,
plus Benchmark and X-10), I will have achieved sonic nirvana for MY
ears. YMMV.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Tube Pre-Amp or MF X-10 Tube Buffer?

2006-05-08 Thread sleepysurf

I'm thrilled with my current Squeezebox2 - Benchmark DAC - Sunfire Amp
setup, except for the digital glare that I still notice in the highs
(no worse than when I used a CD transport). I'm now thinking about
adding a Tube Pre into my setup (possibly the Modwright SWL 9.0), or
alternatively, the more inexpensive Musical Fidelity X-10 v.3 Vacuum
Tube Buffer, which I've read various pros/cons on.

Anybody care to comment on how the Squeezebox (either with native or
outboard DAC) sounds with a Tube Pre (or MF X-10), into a SS Amp.

I'm sure the Bolder or Red Wine mods offer significant improvement.
However, I prefer step-wise separates upgrades, thus when the SB4
eventually comes out, I can plug-and-play into my system. Actually,
since adding the Benchmark, my systems digital glare is already much
improved. Like most audiophiles though, I'm still seeking the holy
grail! I don't REALLY need a Pre (from a source-switching standpoint),
thus the MF X-10 might be a cost-effective way to get that tube
sweetness. Think I'll keep checking A'gon for a used one.

poetic about the form, function, and fidelity, of our beloved box. But
of course, those of us in the know are already smitten! Will be

I hope he'll continue his audition for the print review using 6.2.2 (or
6.5 if out) along with the latest firmware. Hopefully he'll also
compare feeding direct to amp (with or without an outboard DAC),
perhaps eventually trying a linear PSU or one of the modded units.
Mentions of Squeezenetwork and Pandora would also be nice!

I am feeding my SB2 to a Benchmark DAC1 going *DIRECT* to my Amp. Also
using the Elpac linear PSU. I have adjusted the Benchmark volume such
that I can run the SB2 at 35-40 volume (thus minimal or no loss of
digital bits). IMHO, the addition of the Elpac PSU offered a slight
audible improvement, and the addition of the Benchmark a bit more.
However, eliminating the pre-amp stage altogether was the biggest
improvement of all (at least for my system). The bass, midrange, and
higher end are now exquisite.

P.S. I am running 6.2.2 with firmware 35

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Inwall amplifiers

2006-02-07 Thread sleepysurf

Those Pragmatic in wall amps look very slick, but I'd still be leery
about having a heat generating electrical device hidden in a wall,
faceplate or not.

Facing a similar situation (retro-fitting an amp) for my bedroom
Squeezebox setup... I went with a Russound R235LS (35 watts)...
http://russound.com/amplifiers.htm

This amp has a reasonably small form factor with wall/cabinet mount
screw holes. It also offers MULTIPLE inputs with automatic override...
so my music signal automatically shuts off whenever my TV audio is on.

I have been using the Elpac PSU with both my SB2 (wireless) and SB3

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Direct connection to amp

2005-10-19 Thread sleepysurf

Just curious how many are using the new Preamp Volume Control (under
Player Settings - Audio, in recent Slimserver beta) to *DIRECTLY*
connect your Squeezebox2 to your amp, via analog outs.

With an attenuation setting of 2, I now have full range volume
control without clipping or overloading my amp (a Sunfire Cinema Grand
200 ~five, which is vertically biamped for driving Martin-Logan Aerius
i's)

I am utterly flabbergasted by the quantum leap in audio quality this
provides in *MY* system, and am wondering what others have found. I am
even more flabbergasted by the quality of the native SB2 DAC under these
conditions. I was originally planning to buy an outboard DAC
(Benchmark) but can't imagine how it could possibly sound any better
than what I've got now!
