[Ontbirds] cranberry marsh herons--Wednesday
In mid-morning of August 19 Alan Woods and I were fortunate to have 2 Green Herons within 30m. of the south platform at Cranberry Marsh in Whitby, ON. They were within 10m. of each other and periodically thrust their necks out with beaks wide open. Other birds seen from this platform were Black-crowned Night Heron, Great Blue Heron, Great Egrets, Eastern Kingbird, a young Wood Duck, 2 Spotted Sandpipers and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak. As we drove up Reesor Rd. we observed a perched American Kestrel. The north Reesor pond is far too high. We did see a flying, then perched Osprey. At the south Reesor pond were 2 tagged Trumpeter Swans. Doug Lockrey, Whitby, ON ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. Re: [Ontbirds] ISRW Moving
ALLOW ME TO ADD MY HOPES THAT SOMEONE WILL STEP IN TO ENSURE THAT THE IROQUOIS SHORELINE RAPTOR WATCH CONTINUES THIS FALL. MIKE HAS DONE A SUPERB JOB OVER THE PAST NUMBER OF YEARS. It's my hope that ISRW continues as it is a great inland site in north Whitby. We have had years with over 12,000 raptors passing overhead plus it's one of the best spots for Golden Eagles ( 22 ) in one day Nov. 2nd 2014 over( 9,000 ) Broad-Wings in 2003 ( 36 ) Bald Eagle in one day in 2007. [Ontbirds] Vesper Sparrow, 1 of 40 birds at Carden on Thursday, June 11/'15
Ross Lamb and I enjoyed traversing Prospect Rd., Wylie Rd. and Shrike Rd. in the Carden Alvar between 9am and 3pm today. Non-birds included 8+ Butterfly species, including 1 Monarch. Highlight birds would be a loud kidicking Virginia Rail, a road-puddle-bathing Upland Sandpiper, a top-of-pole Wilson's Snipe that spent 90% of its time resting its long bill around on its wing feathers, Alder and Least Flycatchers, many Eastern Bluebirds and Brown Thrashers, Grasshopper and Savannah Sparrows and a VESPER SPARROW --we spent 10 minutes studying this close-up bird. The fields were full of Bobolinks and Eastern Meadowlarks. Raptors included 3 Kestrels, 1 Merlin, a Red-tailed Hawk and a platform-sitting Osprey. Sandhill Cranes were heard and seen by a number of birders half-way up Wylie Rd. We heard but did not see Sedge Wrens. [Ontbirds] monarch in Carden June 5
On Friday, June 5, 3 of us saw a Monarch Butterfly in Carden; I believe it was in the lower reaches of Wylie Rd. On Prospect Rd. 2 VIRGINIA RAILS strode across the road, they being 1km. apart. The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE appeared on the east side of Wylie Rd., then flying across to its favourite dead tree about 150m. west of bluebird box 10. I had a wonderful view of a singing SEDGE WREN atop a cattail. Doug Lockrey, Whitby, ON ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] 47 bird species at Carden on Saturday, May 29
12 of us from the Pickering Naturalists had a great day from 9:30am until 3:30pm, led by John Stirrat. Starting from McNamee Rd. we travelled north along Wylie Rd., eventually turning around to go back down the very rutted road to go over to Prospect Rd. We ended up with 47 bird species Along Wylie some of the highlights were SANDHILL CRANES, UPLAND SANDPIPERS, COMMON SNIPES, ALDER FLYCATCHER, COMMON RAVENS, SEDGE WRENS, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, BROWN THRASHERS, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, WARBLING VIREO, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, TOWHEE, SAVANNAH SPARROWS, GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, BOBOLINKS and EASTERN MEADOWLARKS. Jim McKnight and I put in 3 hours of late morning birding at Carden, to the east of Beaverton, ON on Sunday. We were fortunate to have a singing SEDGE WREN go to sit for 10 minutes on a nearby cattail at the north end of the Wylie Rd. marshland. 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS flew low past the wren. Although others did see THE Shrike we had no luck. Other good birds that we saw and heard included BOBOLINK, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, COMMON SNIPE, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, RUFOUS-SIDED TOWHEE, BROWN THRASHER, NORTHERN ORIOLE, 3 OSPREYS sitting on their platform nests, and many others. [Ontbirds] Excellent Monday at Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch
Monday, Oct.28, at CMRW in southwest Whitby was an exciting day. 7 hours of rising BP, good thermals, temp. of 8C with very strong N winds dictated a good number of migrating hawks, many being pushed out over the lake before returning over the heads of up to 30 viewers. I do not have the final figures, but here is an approximation--over 500 migrating raptors included 220 Turkey Vultures, 1 Osprey, 30 Sharp-shinneds, 1 Cooper's, 2 Merlins, 3 Red-shouldered, 2 Rough-leggeds, 280 Red-tailed, 3 Bald Eagles and 3 Golden Eagles. On the marsh were 13 duck species, 2 Greater Yellowlegs and 1 Pectoral Sandpiper. Near our platform were 30 or more Rusty Blackbirds. Flying through we saw 12 SNOW BUNTINGS and 20 Bonaparte's Gulls. CMRW is reached by traveling south down Hall's Rd. (1 block east of Lakeridge Rd.) from Victoria St. in southwest Whitby. to the second parking area just north of the lakefront. A number of us had wonderful views of a Boreal Chickadee at 11am today, along with both Kinglets. The B.C. is being seen just a little south of the north walkway along Hall's Rd. Patient waiting is rewarded with the bird flying out to near the roadside, showing off his diagnostic all-brown head and pinkish brown flanks. Pine Siskins flew into the tree tops near the south platform. From Lakeridge Rd. going east along Victoria St. to the first street-- Hall's Rd.--turn south towards the lake. On Thursday, May 4, afternoon, I saw what appeared to be a Warbling Vireo in the middle of Thickson's Woods. But it had a wing bar, albeit rather thin. Although we recorded only 5 raptors on Oct.20, much time was spent watching 10 duck species, incl. over 7000 red-breasted mergansers flying west along the lakefront; on the wetland there were perhaps 100 Am.Wigeons, several Wood Ducks, many N.Pintails, Pied-billed Grebe, Am.Coot, 2 Great Egrets, Blue-winged teal, Green-winged teal, N.shoveler. An imm. Red-headed Woodpecker was noted in a tree at the north end. A Rusty blackbird appeared among the birds feeding on the path near our viewing platform. Thanks to Geoff Carpentier for his Oct.19 raptor report-- 433 migrating hawks over 3.5 morning hours--incl. 2 Bald Eagles, 1 Osprey, 415 Turkey Vultures. [Ontbirds] Broad-winged Hawk migration is probably over
My reporting this autumn from Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch is very limited. As I am no longer driving I get there only when someone picks me up. I have agreed to keep the data records, sending weekly reports to Doug Woods. It appears that the Broad-winged flight is over. Indeed the flight path for 90% of them was very much inland, taking many thousands of them between Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay down along the north shore of Lake Erie. Over the past week we had several days of NW wind, rising barometric pressure and thermal updraft velocity over 300'/min., ideal for raptor migration. On Sep. 15 and 16 exactly 5000 Broad-wingeds were counted flying over CMRW. The aforementioned conditions were not met on Sep. 17 and 18--only 44 hawks were noted. [Ontbirds] good thermals, NW wind brought 720 raptors and 25 birders to Cranberry on Sep.15/11
It was great to have many birders and photogs from Kawartha at Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch on this Sep.15 day that had medium NW winds, a rising BP and thermals of 400ft./min., all being condusive to a good flight of migratory raptor over the platform. Sure enough we kept Alan Woods busy counting over 700 hawks over a period of 5 hours. Highlights were 2 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, 11 BALD EAGLES and over 500 BROAD-WINGEDS Up to the time that I left we had 49 Turkey Vultures, 74 Sharp-shinneds and 56 American Kestrels. Non-raptors included 5 warbler species, GLOSSY IBIS, several great egrets, wood ducks, many hummingbirds, wood ducks, 15 common loons, common gallinule. 1 block east of Lakeridge Rd. off Victoria St. in sw Whitby is Hall's Rd.--south toward the lake to the second roadside parking area--walk to the platform. [Ontbirds] migrating raptors near Darlington-Aug.17/11
On Wednesday, Aug.17, the mild NW wind and rising barometric pressure suggested a good autumn hawk migration. Between 10 and 11am Alan Woods and I were walking along the trail between Solina and Park Rds. paralleling the RR tracks and just NW of the Darlington nuclear plant. While enjoying the actions of immature Moorhens and Green Herons we noted the following in the skies above-- 1 Northern Harrier, several Turkey Vultures, 2 Red-tailed Hawks and as many as 10 Broad-winged Hawks--all of them were flying effortlessly westward. Going westward along the 401 we exited at Courtice Rd., south to the South Service Rd., then eastward along it to Solina Rd., turning south toward Lake Ontario--at the south end we parked the car to walk eastward along the trail. 'Twas a cold NE wind that blew onto the faces of 8 eager hawk-watchers at CMRW in sw Whitby at 10AM on Monday, Oct.4. After 3 consecutive days with good N winds, rising BP and good thermals gave us nearly 3000 migrating raptors today's NE winds, steady BP and lower thermals brought only 50 hawks to be counted. [Ontbirds] pelican at Second Marsh all day June 27
The GREAT WHITE PELICAN has been seen several times during the day--Sunday, June 27. At 8:45am I saw it straight out from the viewing platform, literally among the very many Great Blue Herons. At 1:30pm Geoff Carpentier phoned to tell me he was on the platform viewing the bird as he (the bird, that is) popped his head up from behind the cattails somewhat to the west near an island. Directions--401 Exit 419 onto Farewell, south through Bloor to Col.Sam Dr., east about 2.5km. towards the large GM building--just west of it, go into the parking lot's west side overlooking the wetlands. [Ontbirds] clay-coloured, Lincoln's sparrows at Thickson's--sw Whitby--May 4/10
Tuesday, May 4 brought very few birds into the woods of Thickson's Woods. The beautiful singing of the Winter Wren and periodic singing of a Black-throated Blue Warbler were all that I detected. Near the home of Dennis Barry was a mid-AM LINCOLN'S SPARROW. I strolled around the north meadow for an hour, managing to see and hear SCARLET TANAGER, BROWN THRASHER, YELLOW WARBLER, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK AND A *CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW.* South down Thickson Rd. from the 401, parking on the road to walk down the east-west roadway. [Ontbirds] 7 HUDSONIAN GODWITS-lakefront south of Lynde Creek C.A.--noon May 2/10
At 1230PM Dan Kaczynski phoned me from the lakefront as he was watching 7 *HUDSONIAN GODWITS*. Of course it is difficult to say how long they will stay there, but if they stay it would be well worth the long walk. From the Lynde Shores C.A. parking lot (south side of Victoria St. halfway between Lakeridge Rd. and Henry St.) in southwest Whitby walk through the woodlot to the southbound trail. Take this trail south across the meadowland for over a km., whence it joins onto the private roadway--walk down it to the lakefront. Dan was seeing the birds near the waterfront just to the east. [Ontbirds] from Nanticoke to Reesor ponds--sandhill cranes, blue-winged teals--Apr.12/10
Janice Melendez, John Stirrat and I had a fun day of birding on Apr.12 as we traveled from Whitby to Beamer to Nanticoke and back to the Reesor Rd. ponds. By the end of the day we had totaled 53 avian species. Excellent thermals at the Beamer Raptor Watch did not produce great numbers over the 2 hours we put in there--many Turkey Vultures, a few Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks and several Red-Taileds. We then went down to the Fisherville area where we enjoyed watching *Horned Larks* dusting themselves. Traveling toward Nanticoke we saw 4 *Sandhill Cranes* fly overhead and were entertained by a lone male *Wild Turkey*. The north shore of Lake Erie yielded several spots for waterfowl, but no birds of note to us. Then we headed home, stopping in to look over Markham's 2 Reesor Ponds. Highlights at the North Reesor--2 *Caspian Terns, all 3 Mergansers, Am. Wigeons *Highlights at the South Reesor (Reesor Rd, and Steeles Ave.)--male female *Blue-winged Teals, Ring-necked Ducks, Pied-billed Grebe, Barn N. Rough-winged Swallows*. Strong NE wind, a rising BP and good thermals perhaps brought 12 observers down to Cranberry this AM; BUT, all-over blue sky made it difficult to see any high-fliers. While looking for migrating raptors we were entertained by a Red-tailed Hawk cavorting with a Peregrine Falcon, followed by a Sharp-shinned Hawk daring the Peregrine to take him on!! Just as the Falcon settled into a corner tree we had a visit by a large class of students from Rouge Valley P.S. Cranberry Marsh sw Whitby, Ontario, Canada--south roadside parking area on Hall's Rd. Monday, Sep.14/09 Observation time: 0730-1200, 1200-1500EDT Official Counter: Doug Lockrey, Jim Skene Observers: Jim Skene, Dan Kaczynski, Karl Jennewein, Jean Iron, Charlie Adey, Ron Stephenson, Joe Noordman, Jim McKnight, Steve Woods, Tyler Hoar, Marty Allinson and 10+ others Weather: overcast replaced by sunny with cloud patches; light-medium W, then NW winds, Bar.pr.101.6 rising, TUV=2, 20C Many of us arrived with great anticipation of a reasonable hawk flight, but the predicted good NW wind did not materialize.
