[Ontbirds] cranberry marsh herons--Wednesday

2015-08-19 Thread Doug Lockrey
In mid-morning of August 19 Alan Woods and I were fortunate to have 2
Green Herons within 30m. of the south platform at Cranberry Marsh in
Whitby, ON. They were within 10m. of each other and periodically thrust
their necks out with beaks wide open.
Other birds seen from this platform were Black-crowned Night Heron, Great
Blue Heron, Great Egrets, Eastern Kingbird, a young Wood Duck, 2 Spotted
Sandpipers and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak.
As we drove up Reesor Rd. we observed a perched American Kestrel.
The north Reesor pond is far too high. We did see a flying, then perched
Osprey.
At the south Reesor pond were 2 tagged Trumpeter Swans.

For the last 15 years I have been involved and coordinator for the Iroquois

moving to Kingsville ON. on the north shore of Lake Erie. It's my hope that
ISRW continues as it is a great inland site in north Whitby. We have had
years with over 12,000 raptors passing overhead plus it's one of the best
 spots for Golden Eagles ( 22 ) in one day Nov. 2nd 2014 over( 9,000 )
 Broad-Wings in 2003 ( 36 ) Bald Eagle in one day in 2007.

If anyone out there is interested in taking over it would be greatly
appreciated. I have all the records going back to 2004, the previous

[Ontbirds] Vesper Sparrow, 1 of 40 birds at Carden on Thursday, June 11/'15

2015-06-11 Thread Doug Lockrey
Ross Lamb and I enjoyed traversing Prospect Rd., Wylie Rd. and Shrike Rd.
in the Carden Alvar between 9am and 3pm today.
Non-birds included 8+ Butterfly species, including 1 Monarch.
Highlight birds would be a loud kidicking Virginia Rail, a
road-puddle-bathing Upland Sandpiper, a top-of-pole Wilson's Snipe that
spent 90% of its time resting its long bill around on its wing feathers,
Alder and Least Flycatchers, many Eastern Bluebirds and Brown Thrashers,
Grasshopper and Savannah Sparrows and a VESPER SPARROW --we spent 10
minutes studying this close-up bird. The fields were full of Bobolinks and
Eastern Meadowlarks. Raptors included 3 Kestrels, 1 Merlin, a Red-tailed
Hawk and a platform-sitting Osprey.
Sandhill Cranes were heard and seen by a number of birders half-way up
Wylie Rd.
We heard but did not see Sedge Wrens.

[Ontbirds] Excellent Monday at Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch

2013-10-28 Thread Doug Lockrey
Monday, Oct.28, at CMRW in southwest Whitby was an exciting day. 7 hours of
rising BP, good thermals, temp. of 8C with very strong N winds dictated a
good number of migrating hawks, many being pushed out over the lake before
returning over the heads of up to 30 viewers.
I do not have the final figures, but here is an approximation--over 500
migrating raptors included 220 Turkey Vultures, 1 Osprey, 30
Sharp-shinneds, 1 Cooper's, 2 Merlins, 3 Red-shouldered, 2 Rough-leggeds,
280 Red-tailed, 3 Bald Eagles and 3 Golden Eagles.
On the marsh were 13 duck species, 2 Greater Yellowlegs and 1 Pectoral
Sandpiper. Near our platform were 30 or more Rusty Blackbirds. Flying
through we saw 12 SNOW BUNTINGS and 20 Bonaparte's Gulls.

CMRW is reached by traveling south down Hall's Rd. (1 block east of
Lakeridge Rd.) from Victoria St. in southwest Whitby. to the second parking
area just north of the lakefront.

[Ontbirds] Broad-winged Hawk migration is probably over

2011-09-18 Thread Doug Lockrey
My reporting this autumn from Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch is very
limited. As I am no longer driving I get there only when someone picks
me up. I have agreed to keep the data records, sending weekly reports
to Doug Woods.

It appears that the Broad-winged flight is over. Indeed the flight
path for 90% of them was very much inland, taking many thousands of
them between Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay down along the north shore
of Lake Erie.

Over the past week we had several days of NW wind, rising barometric
pressure and thermal updraft velocity over 300'/min., ideal for raptor
migration. On Sep. 15 and 16 exactly 5000 Broad-wingeds were counted
flying over CMRW. The aforementioned conditions were not met on Sep.
17 and 18--only 44 hawks were noted.

[Ontbirds] migrating raptors near Darlington-Aug.17/11

2011-08-17 Thread Doug Lockrey
On Wednesday, Aug.17, the mild NW wind and rising barometric pressure
suggested a good autumn hawk migration. Between 10 and 11am Alan Woods
and I were walking along the trail between Solina and Park Rds.
paralleling the RR tracks and just NW of the Darlington nuclear plant.
While enjoying the actions of immature Moorhens and Green Herons we
noted the following in the skies above-- 1 Northern Harrier, several
Turkey Vultures, 2 Red-tailed Hawks and as many as 10 Broad-winged
Hawks--all of them were flying effortlessly westward.

Going westward along the 401 we exited at Courtice Rd., south to the

[Ontbirds] over 700 migrating raptors at Cranberry, incl. Goshawk--Oct.1

2010-10-01 Thread Doug Lockrey
Good N winds and high thermals over Cranberry Marsh in southwest
Whitby on Oct.1 brought over 25 observers to identify and count hawks
as they
tracked high and low from Thickson Pt. over our heads. I was happy to
be with them for 3 hours.

This is an incomplete report because I had to leave 10+ great
observers to continue observing and recording. After 5 hours the
number of migrating
raptors was well over 700, including 440 TURKEY VULTURES, 170
SHARP-SHINNEDS, 88 AM.KESTRELS, 10 BROAD-WINGEDS and
our first N.GOSHAWK.

Between Sep.20 and Sep.30 there have been only 300 migrating hawks
over CMRW, there being only 1 day with NW winds and good thermals.
The total from Aug.23 to Oct.1 will be well in excess of 6000.

I thank every observer and counter for their diligent work.

[Ontbirds] from Nanticoke to Reesor ponds--sandhill cranes, blue-winged teals--Apr.12/10

2010-04-13 Thread Doug Lockrey
Janice Melendez, John Stirrat and I had a fun day of birding on Apr.12 as we
traveled from Whitby to Beamer to Nanticoke and back to the Reesor Rd.
ponds. By the end of the day we had totaled 53 avian species.
Excellent thermals at the Beamer Raptor Watch did not produce great numbers
over the 2 hours we put in there--many Turkey Vultures, a few Sharp-shinned
and Cooper's Hawks and several Red-Taileds.
We then went down to the Fisherville area where we enjoyed watching *Horned
Larks* dusting themselves.
Traveling toward Nanticoke we saw 4 *Sandhill Cranes* fly overhead and were
entertained by a lone male *Wild Turkey*.
The north shore of Lake Erie yielded several spots for waterfowl, but no
birds of note to us.
Then we headed home, stopping in to look over Markham's 2 Reesor Ponds.
Highlights at the North Reesor--2 *Caspian Terns, all 3 Mergansers, Am.
Wigeons
*Highlights at the South Reesor (Reesor Rd, and Steeles Ave.)--male female
*Blue-winged Teals, Ring-necked Ducks, Pied-billed Grebe, Barn N.

[Ontbirds] 98 92 raptors at CRANBERRY in SW Whitby, ON--Oct.17 18/09-- brief look at dickcissel

At 0930EDT on Oct.17 Alf Adamo saw a Dickcissel from the viewing
platform--just a quick

glimpse. On that day a GLAUCOUS GULL and our first ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS were seen.
On the 18th we had several RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, a WILSON'S SNIPE and a
SNOW GOOSE.

On Sunday, Oct.18 we had at least 50 visitors to the platform over the
6-hour period.

Both days had good northerly winds and a rising BP, along with good
thermals.
Undoubtedly there were very high-flying raptors, out-of-view against the
blue skies.

[Ontbirds] 107 RAPTORS, towhee, rusty blackbird at CRANBERRY in SW Whitby, ON--Oct.16/09

2009-10-16 Thread Doug Lockrey

Strong NE wind, a rising BP and good thermals perhaps brought 12 observers
down
to Cranberry this AM; BUT, all-over blue sky made it difficult to see any
high-fliers.

While looking for migrating raptors we were entertained by a Red-tailed Hawk
cavorting
with a Peregrine Falcon, followed by a Sharp-shinned Hawk daring the
Peregrine to

take him on!!

Just as the Falcon settled into a corner tree we had a visit by a large
class of students from
Rouge Valley P.S. Dave Worthington set up his scope so that everyone of the
kids

had a great look at the bird.

[Ontbirds] 116 RAPTORS, PILEATED WOODPECKER at CRANBERRY in SW Whitby, ON--Oct.15/09

2009-10-15 Thread Doug Lockrey

Strong NE wind and a falling BP were not conducive to a significant hawk
migration. But, in
spite of the wind blowing right at us the 7-8 observers appreciated good
thermals bring ing in
116 raptors. APOLOGIES TO GLORIA-- she wants a Bald Eagle; well, 10 minutes
after she left

a young BE came majestically through.
We are presently experiencing good Red-tailed Hawk migration.
At 1110EDT a PILEATED WOODPECKER was heard, then seen flying low over the
