Re: [Chevelle-list] Best primer - frame/ suspension parts2

2006-09-11 Thread Dan McIntosh

I've never heard of a powdercoat
"primer"

I know of some places that zinc plate or galvanize
before they apply the powdercoating though.

The biggest problems with powdercoating is poor
prep work (cleaning, degreasing, etc..) and improper cure time/
temperature.

I powdercoat stuff all the time here at home and
get better results than the stuff I took to the "pros".  Of course, my size
capabilities are limited to what I can fit into the oven in my
garage.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Best primer - frame/ suspension parts

2006-09-08 Thread Dan McIntosh

Epoxy Primer is your best bet on bare metal,
whether its your frame, or your sheetmetal.  All bodywork should be done on
top of the epoxy primer.

You can pick up a cheap gravity feed gun at Harbor
Freight for about 15 bucks that will work great for spraying your frame and
suspension.

Best of luck!

My question is, what sort of primer should I use on these parts?
Because ofwhere I am doing this (outside, not in an enclosed area), I'd

Re: [Chevelle-list] Welding question

2006-08-29 Thread Dan McIntosh

Hi Karl,

The problem with the .035 flux core is the amount
of heat required to turn it liquid is sometimes a bit hotter than is required to
puddle the base material.  Thats why you get blow thru.

Maybe see if a local welding supply store offers
the flux core in an .025.  you'll need to change the contact tip but your
existing liner should work fine.

I'm using .035 flux core right now.  I also have
.025 and shielding gas, but probably won't use it because I don't
have  an enclosed space to weld in (and it can get kinda windy where
  the car is).

I'll go in a direction nobody else has yet and
ask, what size wire are you running?  I've had great success on thin
gauge steel with .025 solid core wire and shielding gas.

You can also weld thin stuff with .035 but the
technique is different.

Also, don't forget to tack weld, move, tack
weld, move, etc...   giving the metal ample time to cool in order
to minimize warpage.

Good luck and keep practicing!

pictures of the 65 Malibu I had a few years ago.  This car was my reason
for finding and joining this list.  Although I've moved on to a completely
different style of vehicles now, I have alot of good memories of fun times with
this 65.

I replaced just about every interior component in
it while I had it.  Under the hood was an inline 6.  Not exactly a
tire shredder, but with the fresh interior, the shiny paint, and the radio
turned up a little on the loud side, it made weekend cruises with the wife very
enjoyable.

Heres the link.

Last Friday when I was going home from work I had 2 crotch rockets pass
me.  They were doing around 70~75 MPH.  The front biker sat up,
looked around and popped a wheelie.  He held it up for at least 1/8 of a
mile.  No helmet, only jeans and a t-shirt, in heavy traffic.
Scared the heck out of me.  If he would have lost it he would have looked
like a deer hit by a trailer truck.  Sorry, I guess I am getting too
old and think about what could happen.
  Had to vent, Russ

Hi Guys,  I'm still fighting the pre-oiler
wars with my new crate 350.  Several
Chevelle List members helped me determine that a screwdriver shaft
can't work since it needs a bushing to oil the upper galleries and
valvetrain.  So I bought a Proform
"66896 Professional Oil Pump Primer with Bushing" at my local Speed
Shop.

Today I cranked it for a couple of minutes but
still don't see any oil coming from the pushrod/rocker area.
Am I missing something?  It seems like it shouldn't be this
difficult.  No, there is not a big pool of oil under the
car.

I dunno all the specificas about bearing
requirements in rear ends, but, in general, roller bearing handle more of a load
and last longer than ball bearings.  If you decide to go with ball bearing,
get sealed units so they wont leak.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Front coil springs

2005-12-27 Thread Dan McIntosh

It's a much better option than heating the coils,
but not as good as buying lowering springs.
If you do decide to do this, use a method other
than flame cutting, such as abrasive wheel, cold saw, etc...

Just remember, don't cut off too much at once, a 3"
cut on the spring, DOES NOT equate to 3 inches of
drop.

  Subject: [Chevelle-list] Tool
Definitions: (just had to pass it on)

  Happy Holidays to the Chevelle
  list!!!

For those of you in the shoplight gang, and other mechanics, wives of
mechanics, and otherwise foolhardy individuals with the moxy to tackle the
  untamable beast in your garage!

  TOOL DEFINITIONS:

DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat
metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and
flings your soda across the room, splattering it against that freshly
  painted part you were drying.

WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under
the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprint whorls and
hard-earned guitar calluses in about the time it takes you to say, "Ouch"

ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning pop rivets in their holes
until you die of old age.

PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads.

HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board
principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion,
and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future
  becomes.

VISE-GRIPS: Used to round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available,
they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your
  hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable
objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the
wheel hub that you want the bearing out of.

WHITWORTH SOCKETS: Once used for working on older British cars and
motorcycles, they are now used mainly for impersonating that 9/16 or 1/2
socket you've been searching for the last 15 minutes.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after
you have installed your new disk brake pads, trapping the jack handle firmly
  under the bumper.

EIGHT-FOOT LONG DOUGLAS FIR 2 X 4: Used for levering an automobile upward
  off a hydraulic jack handle.

TWEEZERS: A tool for removing wood splinters.

PHONE: Tool for calling your neighbors to see if he has another hydraulic
  floor jack.

SNAP-ON GASKET SCRAPER: Theoretically useful as a sandwich tool for
spreading mayonnaise; used mainly for getting dog crap or horse crap off your
  boots.

E-Z OUT BOLT AND STUD EXTRACTOR: A tool ten times harder than any known
drill bit that snaps off in bolt holes you couldn't use anyway.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the tensile strength on
  everything you forgot to disconnect.

CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 16-INCH SCREWDRIVER: A large pry bar that inexplicably
has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the end opposite the handle.

  AVIATION METAL SNIPS: See hacksaw.

SHOP LIGHT: The home mechanic's own tanning booth. Sometimes called a
drop light, it is a good source of vitamin D, "the sunshine vitamin," which is
not otherwise found under cars at night. Health benefits aside, it's main
purpose is to consume 40-watt light bulbs at about the same rate that 105-mm
howitzer shells might be used during, say, the first few hours of the Battle
of the Bulge. More often dark than light, its name is somewhat misleading.
(also used to sear permanent scar onto back of hand as initiation ritual,
signifying membership into garage floor mechanic gang aka: the 'Shoplight
  Boyz')

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the lids of old-style
paper-and-tin oil cans and splash oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as
the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.

AIR COMPRESSOR: A machine that takes energy produced in a coal-burning
power plant 200 miles away and transforms it into compressed air that travels
by hose to a Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench that grips rusty bolts last over
tightened 58 years ago by someone at ERCO, and neatly rounds off their heads.

PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or
bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50¢ part.

HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to cut hoses too short.

HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is
used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts not far from
the object we are trying to hit.

MECHANIC'S KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of
cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on
contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector
magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts.

Aint it the truth, Clint. Reagan once announced in a
speech that "inflation is tax". The media people didn't understand it so
they never attacked him for it. Lucky for Reagan, most media people can't
figure out whether they should lease their new Chevy or buy it. For that
matter, neither can anyone else because they don't teach the concept in
school...they're too busy teaching gay tolerance and Ebonics.

Just for the record, my idea of "gun control" is
putting the second round through the same hole as the first.

Again, I hate to interject here but the Fed raises
rates to check inflation because BUSINESS wants them to, not because
government wants them to. 99.% of the people in the world do not know
that inflation is TAX. It is not discussed by politicians and media
because a) it is over the head of most media people and b) it is over the
head of nearly all attorneys and our politicians are all attorneys.

Inflation is the systematic devaluation of a
currency. When you see the "national debt" number, what is not discussed is
to whom that debt is owed. The fact is, the debt is owed almost entirely to
American citizens (and their pension plans, IRAs and 401ks) in the form
of US Treasury bills and notes and bonds (among which is the ubiquitous
Savings Bond). Inflation benefits "net debtors", that is, people or
countries or companies who owe more money in debt than is owed to them by
others. The government is the biggest "net debtor" by a gigantic margin.
Thus, inflation HELPS the government because it allows them to pay YOU back
with dollars that have been "devalued"...that is, they are worth less than
the dollars you loaned them when you bought the bond, T-bill, T-note,
etc.

All you Vietnam era vets and citizens might remember
that at the end of the Vietnam War the national debt was staggering. In
fact, the US could not pay it off so the government, then under Richard
Nixon, devalued the currency 25% in one day. And this was on top of
inflation rates that ranged from 12% to 20% over the preceeding three or
four years. Folks, this is "inflation" gone mad. Some of you might also
remember stories about the inflation rate in Brazil being 100% per month and
things like that. That, too, is just the government in power "devaluing" the
currency. It happens all over the world, all the time.

If you really want to see true change in this
country, demand that your schools teach people two things: The "time value
of money" (also called "discounted cash flow" and how to figure it out) and
the difference between "progressive" and "regressive" tax systems. If
ordinary people understood these two things, every politician in office
would be thrown out on his or her fat behind - Repulicans and Democrats
alike. In fact, I'll go farther than that - if people understood the concept
of regressive taxes alone every politician in office would be arrested and
charged with sedition. The old saying "the rich get richer and the poor get
poorer" exists not because rich people screw poor people but because the
government screws poor people. They do this because they can - you see, the
rich people "get it". They understand how the tax system works and how to
circumvent the system. Poor people don't have the knowledge so they get
screwed. It isn't a big conspiracy, it is your elected representatives
creating a tax system that enables them to tax the people with the smallest
voice - and that is you and me.

Finally, permit me to say that, I can teach
ANYONE who graduated from high school these two ideas and the fact that our
high schools do NOT teach these things is, IMHO, nearly criminal. I was
taught these ideas in the first accounting class I

Thanks
Rick. I have drums in front. My blower motor is not working right now. The
orange wire does come from the bundle that crosses the firewall. On the top
of my A/C box is a thing that looks sort of like a horn relay. That has a
plastic connector with 2 wires going into it, one of which is orange, and it
is not connected to anything. It is only a few inches long and has a lug on
it as if it went into a plastic inline fuse holder at some point. If that is
where I am supposed to hook up power to the blower, then my harness has the
wrong connector.

I
also have a purple wire that goes up toward that horn relay looking thing
and is not connected to anything. It has a spade type connector on it.
Wondering what that is too...

The tan wire
for the brake (on my 72) plugs into the end of the proportioning
valve.  Its hot because if the proportioning valve detects a fault with
the brake hydraulics (unequal pressure) it grounds the 12 volts on that
wire.  Then the brake warning light on your dash illuminates.
Thats how the 72 is, I'd imagine that 69 is similar.  Although if
you have drums up front you will have a distribution block instead of
the prop valve.

John does your  heater blower fan work?   The diagram I
looked at also shows the orange wire going to the fan.  But you have
A/C and I believe that the orange wire to the fan on A/C cars comes acrossed
the top of the engine firewall, behind the distributor.

One thing to note... if you go the powder coat way you have to give
them a bare housing... the bushings and insides will never take the
heat.  If it's already together... paint is the only way.  I have to
do the same to my rear... i plan to primer it and then paint it a gloss
black can get the paint from a local store... or eastwood.

I like the idea about using the cherry picker I was going to paint

  Good luck!!

Any place that sells 3M products will have it.

You can pick up a multi speed polisher and the
bonnets rather inexpensively at a Harbor Freight if there's one nearby.
Use the foam pads soaked in water, they run much cooler than the wool ones,
reducing your chance of burning through the clear. If you don't have a Harbor
freight, Sears sells the stuff but at a higher price.

This is the kind of polisher you will want, not the
other kind:

  http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=90820

Good luck!  Its not that hard to do even the
first time, just be ready to dedicate a full day to polishing it, then washing
it real well afterwards.  You'll also need to reapply the wax
afterwards.

  Hi Dan
I used FatMat from ebay, it was about 100 dollars
for 100 square feet. It really cut down on road noise.
It was pretty user friendly, just make sure to
wipe the surfaces down with acetone or something similar before applying it.
Also, the roller they supplied was pure garbage, I'd suggest finding a good
  wood roller somewhere.
I really cut down on road noise.
Here's a pic of the FatMat installed in my old 64
  Impala.

I used FatMat from ebay, it was about 100 dollars

It was pretty user friendly, just make sure to

Also, the roller they supplied was pure garbage, I'd suggest finding a good

[Chevelle-list] fuel pump or carb part 2

2005-08-01 Thread Dan McIntosh

Well guys,

After school today, I removed the fuel pump from
the motor, then took off the back plate so I could inspect the push
rod.

Everything with the pushrod looked good, and I
stuck it in the hole and had the wife crank the motor while I pushed on it with
my finger.  It moved back and forth following the cam lobe, about 1/2 of an
inch.  Does this seem correct?

While I was at it, I blew air through the "tank to
pump" line, until I heard air bubbling in the gas tank. So I'm assuming that
line is free of obstructions.

Looking back, it used to take only 3 or 4 pumps of
the pedal to get the car started, lately it has been taking 40-50 pumps, after
sitting for a few days, that is.

Also, nobody around here seems to stock the pump
that I need, in fact, the young kid at Auto Zone pulled it up on his computer
and then brought out an electric inline pump.  When I pointed to the box,
and told him mine looked like the mechanical pump pictured, he said, "let me ask
this guy" referring to a co-worker, who's response was, "I think that's an EGR
valve"

So I'm going to NAPA tomorrow in hopes of them
having one, if they don't, I'll be on my way to Summit Racing for the Holley
pump.

carb?

Hi all, today I was out driving the 63, and it
started feeling like it had no power, bogging out and stuff, until it
finally died on the side of the road.
I had the wife bring me starting fluid, at
which point it ran until the fluid dissipated. I took the line off the carb,
removed the filter from the carb, and cranked the motor, no fuel shot out.

So I sent her to get some gas, and dumped 5
gallons into the car (dunno the status of the gauge, it was reading half,
and it seemed to work before)
Shot it with the starting fluid, and it cranked
right over.
I drove it for about 2 minutes, then it did it
again.  Got out, sprayed the fluid, and started it up, I'd go to rev it
up, it would die.
Finally, it started back up, and ran the 35
seconds it took to get to my driveway.
Also, there's a strange "knocking" noise from
the motor that wasn't there before, not as loud as a rod knock, but not as
quiet as a lifter tick.  I don't know if this is coincidental or
not.
Any ideas?

Thank you.

Re: [Chevelle-list] fuel pump or carb?

2005-07-31 Thread Dan McIntosh

The knocking noise was going on when I started it
up today, before the stalling problem, almost sounds like it's from the
carb.
Remember, the front of my car bounces 30-40 inches
in the air, so strange thing could happen.
Now that I think about it, I was hopping it hard
last time I drove it, and when I restarted it, it sounded funny, but I
disregarded it thinking maybe I cracked an exhaust manifold or something, never
checked it out though.
I only had to drive it a few seconds to get it home
after the hopping last time.
I have no clue what I screwed up this
time.

Hi Dan, sounds like you've got a fuel pump
that's N.G. The knocking noise is could be fromtoo much starting fluid.
That stuff can ruin an engine. I hope, for your sake, that is not the case

Re: [Chevelle-list] Recall

if it's a safety recall ( Im assuming seat belts
fall under this category), they have to honor it.
You can call and give them the VIN, and they'll
know if it has had the recall work done or not.
If you're the original owner, then you'd already
know this though.

ya, the "certain crowd" thing gets mentioned
as well.
it's funny, because real lowriders
aren't  the troublemakers that the media portrays, you're more likely
to see them guys in the mini truck/ import section.  hell, most of us work
full time jobs to support our habit, just like rodders, plus, we build
rides that are cleaner than the majority of hot rods, they just
happen go up and down and stand on 3 wheels as well..

take my old 64 impala as an example, you'd
be hard pressed to find a cleaner ride at shows.  but it was built
"lowrider style", so it got no respect at rod shows.. which is fine.  I
build what I like.

oh well, a closed mind only hurts the person

is airbagged. I guess its kind of done hot rod style or whatever because mine
are real slow. I just come into a show and slam it, then up for driving. No
hopping going down the street haha. That's cool that youre into that, but just
not my thing. Plus it seems there is a certain crowd around those kind of cars

Re: [Chevelle-list] Dan McIntosh

2005-06-26 Thread Dan McIntosh

Hey Tim, whats up!

Anyway, as far as the crossmember
smacking... well, it does sometimes.  If the person isn't very good at
timing the switch, the car will smack the ground.  A person with good
timing will hit it up while the car is about 1/2 way through the down travel,
which will prevent the springs from ever compressing far enough to allow the
frame to have any contact with the ground.

Most lowriders don't even hop their
cars.  Myself, I cant help it.  I can pull my tires in the air about
24 inches on a good day.  Once I swap out my stock frame for my fully
reinforced frame, I'll add bigger springs and more batteries, and should be
hitting in the mid 40's.

Craziness, huh?  I get allot of hate
from the hot rod shows around here.  I always here, "you ruined that
car"

like the guy with the 18 point roll cage
welded into his camaro, or the dude with the chopped top 50 merc, didn't ruin
their cars, if that's how you look at it, lol.

oh well, hey if you want to know anything
else about lowriders, hydraulics, or air suspension, just ask.

Just checking out eBay for stuff I need for my 69

and their brother is building clones, but this should be against the law. They
will even ''age'' it for you. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4553646239&category=10076

I am curious, how many of you would
consider building a clone and what is your age? I ask age because it seems
like younger guys who build clones see nothing wrong with it. Personally I
think it takes away from original cars, I mean you go to a show to see rare
stuff and it takes the fun out of it. I would much rather look at a dozen
Malibus and one SS versus a dozen fakes. I would bet there are more
''SS'' cars on the road now then there ever were built
  originally!!

Sorry to vent, but I had to get this out of
  my system.

Hi all,
i have a 283 in my 63 Impala, and I'm having some
issues getting it to run correctly.
the main problem is, in park or neutral, it runs
fine, with good to slightly high engine RPM's.  But In drive, when I come
to a stop, it wants to bog down and die due to the RPM's dropping super
low.  As long as I'm driving it, it runs very good, although with some
hesitation ands stumble when I gas it.
The motor is basically stock, with a 2bbl carb, and
an Accell HEI distributor.  The Accel has an adjustable vacuum advance
unit.  I've tried to adjust it a turn at a time and drive it to see if
there are any improvements, and there doesn't seem to be.
Any ideas on what I can check next?

was on the motor in my blue 64 Impala.

V10219CGC

The V stands for the Flint Michigan engine plant. there should be only 4
numbers between the V and the C, and those are
the month and day the motor was built.

The first 8 digits, I have no idea.

I wonder what the difference is in the control arms? I have stock control
arms(top and bottom), but I have air bags, not Air Ride though. Mine is
custom, the dual pumpkin type. I have 2" drop spindles, but I can lay my
cross member on the ground. Maybe the different years (mines a 66) has
something to do with it. Dont know. I want to see some pictures when its done

My new lower a-arms were shipped today and are supposed to be delivered
Thursday morning. Air Ride told us that with their lowers and Shockwaves
that I should be able to lower the car, without air,to within 1 1/2" to 2"
from the ground to the crossmember. That'll work.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Air Ride installation

2005-05-08 Thread Dan McIntosh

Hi Fellas,
I installed air suspension on my old 64
Impala.  While it was faster acting than what you'd use for a lowrod style
setup, the idea is the same.  Basically, all 4 coil springs are replaced
with air bellows bags.
On my 64, the ride quality was amazing.
Even with the front shocks and sway bar removed, the handling was better than
stock.
The biggest thing to worry about is keeping the
tank clean of water.  Make sure to drain it every month minimum.
Otherwise, you could get rust in the tank, either causing particles to make
their way into the valves, or, at worst, cause the tank to rupture.
You want to make sure that the air lines are
well protected and routed well away from heat sources.
Nothing makes you need new undies quite like a
corner of the car dropping whilst doing 75 on the highway.
Oh ya, it is advisable to get a system that has
independent wheel control, instead of one that ties the front wheels together,
and the back wheels together.  With them tied together, you will get alot
of weight transfer when cornering, which is VERY undesirable, lol.
If you guys have any questions on air
suspension, please feel free to ask me, I've had a ton on experience with it on
the 250PSI 12 gallon 1/2" valves and lines engine driven compressor and a
nitrogen tank that raises the car in a split second scale, so I've had my
share of troubleshooting and re-engineering.
alrighty

Sure,be glad to,Tom. As for the air tank &
compressor, they are mounted underneath the car. Behind the fuel tank is a flat
crossmember or bulkhead. Between that and the rear bumper is an area that
measures approximately 24" x 28". I went with a five gallon air tank and it
fits in that space with plenty of room.

  I don’t think anyone
has ever had their posts deleted because it wasn’t 64-72
  related.

  With that said, I
believe 99% of the list owns (or wants to own) a 64-72 model.  If one has
a 73-87 model, there might be better lists or forums available, but all are

My OLD eyes are getting bad and my Confuser
screens small.. But it dose look like one of the aftermarket hood
ornaments  JC Whitney and Penn-Jersey use to sell.
a popular one in our area was a Swan type bird
with plastic  wings in a V configuration.  You could install a
lamp in the base that defused the light through the solid base illuminating
  the wings... UGLY..

  Dear Cindy:
if you don't like the topic don't read it. Yes this is a Chevelle list

I'd like to suggest the use of a heat shrink tube

Mike, is right on in describing the correct way
to do a wire solder joint. All you need is a small film of solder to fill
the voids in the wireconnection.Resistance is determined by what
the electricity needs to flow throughwhether it be the wire itself and
each connection.  The longer the wire runand more connections the
greater the resistance no matter what the wiresize.   I
personally will solder any joint that is assessable willing totake more
apart to make it easier to solder.  It will prevent the potentialfor
a loose connections and looks more professional in my honest opinion. And
like Mike said always tape a solder connection to prevent moisture anda
  bare connection.Krister MeisterBloomingdale, IL'66 SS

The biggest problem with soldering is the person holding
the iron/gunwhateverUSUALLY. Most folks just have no experience in
soldering. Your commentabouta solder joint needing to have mechanical
integrity is absolutely correct. It is thefirst step to a good joint.
The next step is to get proper heating ofboth/all elementsto be
soldered and then apply the solder to the joint. It is not correct toapply
thesoldering tool to the solder to get it to melt. It is correct to apply
thesolder to thehot joint and have it melt evenly over the
joint. Also electrical soldering has no resemblance to body soldering or
Acid Coretype soldering.Once a joint is properly executed it should
still be covered in a means toprotect itfrom the elements that can and
will cause oxidation.Crimp joints are just like solder joints. Using
the right tools andtechniques is the key tohaving good crimp joints.
And as with a solder joint it also requiresattention after thefact to
protect it from the elements. You can go either way as long as the
joint is properly done be it solder orcrimp. I useboth ways but
generally lean towards soldering. However in a vehicle Iusually lean
towardscrimp and other compression joints. It's just easier than soldering
aconnection under a dashand having molten solder drip on your
nose.Yeah, I know I am gonna get hammered on this one because everyone
has anopinion thathas to be one way or the other.Hey!
