RE: Your Switching Exam Prep

2000-08-18 Thread Mike Tandino

Carl,

I too have the switching book from Sean Odom and Doug Hammond. You are so
correct that it is far better than the Cisco Press Books. I looked for one
by Todd Lammle but he doesn't have one out yet. We are all trying to get
our CCNP 2.0 so that the company can keep it's Gold Partner certification
for purchasing discounts. We have been using the Switching Exam Prep and
passing the test without taking the BCMSN course.

Chapter 4 which you were talking about is worth the books price in itself.
I found it the cheapest on Fatbrain.com. I saw the Switching Black Book by
Sean Odom is coming out too and pre-ordered it on AMAZON. Also if you go to
Sean's website it shows that he has written the Routing Book with Todd
Lammle. His website is in the back of the book.
www.thequestforcertification.com <-could he make it any longer?

No offense to Thomas but Sean Odom and Doug Hammonds book is better
organized and spells things out much cleaner. Yes it covers everything
Thomas's book covers and more. There is even a very good chapter on ATM.
One of the biggest benefits is Chapter 4 which outlines every single switch,

and their features, available modules, ports, speeds, etc. It would take me

weeks to compile all this information. I wish someone would do that for
routers.

For those who have been asking what the book title and ISBN numeber is. The

Switching Exam Prep, by Coriolis. The author is Sean Odom and Doug Hammond.

ISBN number 1-157610-689-6. It is a good book!

Re: upgrading ios on a 7513

If you are lucky you may have space on flash card for 2 IOS images.

Use boot command in config like this: (my 7513 router)
boot system flash slot0:rsp-isv-mz_120-2a.bin
Old image could be on flash in slot0, new image in slot1

Find information about boot command here:

DSL newbie

2000-08-18 Thread jeongwoo park

Hi all
Here is situation.
My friend got dsl from Northpoint. His roommate wanted
to have dsl on his computer. So my friend bought
netopia dsl router.
Does he have enough equipment to get his roommate dsl?
Of course, he knows he needs extra cables.
any other missing things?
Also, he had 3com sdsl modem to get his dsl
connection.
Does he still need this 3com sdsl modem to get his
roommate dsl connection? or this modem is unnecessary
while he is going to use netopia dsl router?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Thanks for the heads up. The problem is that the signature didn't append to

Sorry 'bout that.

Just want to add that this work is likely to be sporadic, a few days at a

Integrated ISIS / EIGRP / Mutual Redistribution

2000-08-18 Thread Frédéric Bosquet-Denis

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on Integrated-ISIS and more precisely on a method
called "Route Leaking" which consist of enabling redistribution level-2 IP
routes into level-1 areas. And it doesn't seems to work. Well let's go
throught it. I've got three routers.

routerA --- routerB --- routerC

routerA is running I-ISIS L1
routerB is running EIGRP and I-ISIS L1L2. There is a mutual redistribution
between EIGRP and I-ISIS L2. Route Leaking is implemented here : L2 into L1.
routerC is running EIGRP and it sees routerA through External route which
normal.

Because routerB is running I-ISIS L1L2, routerA install a default route to
routerB.

And then routerA can communicate with routerC BUT i don't want that way of
function. I'd like routerA install all the routes from EIGRP and not only a
default route. So i'm working on Route Leaking.

Is there anyone ever worked on something similar ?

Re: Problem with Doc CD & Verity 4.00

2000-08-18 Thread Bharat Suneja

Search in the GroupStudy archives for solutions to this problem. Cisco web
site also some info about it. I've had problems with the Doc CD (even the
March 2000 edition). However, after my laptop was rebuilt and the registry
hack procedure performed, it is working fine. It never worked previously on
Win2000 even after I uninstalled completely & changed the registry &
resinstalled... maybe it leaves some artifacts in the registry even after
you uninstall - just a guess.

Re: ospf lsu using 224.0.0.5 and 224.0.0.6 ?

Hi Jason:

When there is a change a router forwards the LSU to the DR of the
multiaccess network using the OSPF multicast 224.0.0.6. The DR acknowledges
the receipt of the change and floods the LSU to the others int the
multiaccess network using the OSPF multicast address 224.0.0.5.

Hope this helps,

Re: ISDN lab setup

2000-08-18 Thread Kenneth

that's only for one line though. You'll need 2 to simulate.

I think getting an ISDN simulator is the best way since you can always sell
it back for a very good price. Teltone simulators hold up their value
pretty good.

At ebay, they generally sell it for $1900 and I figure you can sell it back
for about $1600

Re: 2505 Router/Hub

2000-08-18 Thread Arya Salahi

You should think of the Ethernet0 interface as a virtual inerface. since
the hub is built in, then you don't need a physical Ethernet interface. You
can verfiy by doing a "no shut" on the Ethernet0 interface and watch it come
up.

Wireless

2000-08-18 Thread 221BSB Kruczkowski, Raphael

Hi all,
I'm thinking about getting a IMAC for my mother, I want to get the Apple
AirPort wireless link for it.
My question is, will the AirPort wireless link work with some other
company's wireless?

I was reading that the Apple's AirPort uses the 802.11 DSSS standard. I
also have a IBM laptop that I would like to use the wireless, but I bet that
the Apple PCMCIA card will not work in a PC, So what I want to do is get
Cisco's Aironet's PCMCIA card (won't it be cool having a IBM laptop with a
big Cisco card sticking out of it sitting on the lawn browsing the net? with
NO cables???) to access the apple hub.

Anyone know?

Also, are there any Apple geeks (hehe) here? I have a few questions...
email me.

AirPort (Rebadged Lucent), WaveLan/Orinoco and Aironet all work together
when I've tested them. It was pretty seamless. Same goes for any other
802.11-compliant DSSS wireless LAN device. Nokia makes an 802.11 card that
I've tested with Aironet as well.

I'm less impressed with the AirPort base station itself, but it's really
aimed at the SOHO market, not the enterprise market, and most of my
objections revolve around the sorts of tradeoffs made there.

Do note that you will need either a Mac or a third-party java-based config
app to configure the AirPort base station. This isn't much of a problem in
practice, but it is annoying that there's no serial-console-based interface
to the device.

Yes, this is true, but not the whole story. As a study topic, why
doesn't the reporting router send to the unicast address of the DR?
Multicasts imply that more than one destination will listen. Who
else would be interested in this update? Why?

RFC 2328, section A.1, page 184.

Seriously, when you are asking why a protocol does something, the RFC
is really the first place to go. I didn't know the specific reference
in the OSPF specification, but a search on 224.0.0.6 quickly found it.

Hint: OSPF uses two different multicast addresses, and in certain
circumstances unicast addresses. The underlying idea is what
formally is called "scoping". A broadcast has a scope that includes
everyone, while an unicast has a scope of one destination. Think of
circumstances where it would be reasonable to have multicasts with
more restricted scope than broadcasts. Think of protocol messages
that some, not all, OSPF routers need to hear.

Re: Ethernet Collisions

2000-08-18 Thread Ed Moss

If the router and the switch are the only devices connected, say by a cross
over cable, I would first make the assumption that the crossover cable is at
fault. Next, I believe all of the 10Mb router interfaces are half-duplex, so
I would ensure the switch port is set to half-duplex and 10Mb (don't let the
switch auto configure the connection)

Last the only time I have personally seen this was when the network had
multiple subnets configured with workstations at 100Mb, and the router had
to route between them. This was during an IP address conversion that wasn't
quite completed. (Servers were left on one subnet while workstation were on
another.)

Workstations would negotiate a 100Mb, full duplex connection... then try to
talk to a server (same broadcast domain, different subnet) at 100Mb
full-duplex. The bottleneck was the router at 10Mb half-duplex.

Re: simple question about FR/ATM (ethernet)

2000-08-18 Thread Circusnuts

I guess...  FR &
ATM use PVC's or SVC's, that are virtual paths (or circuits)...  So- with
Ethernet only one can exist @ one place @ one time in any given space
(collision domain stuff), but ATM or FR (logically) can have
co-existing traffic traveling on virtual connections, never colliding
(more like say a VLAN than CSMA/CD).  In real physical terms,
these PVC are almost like individual paths to a hub being mux-ed into one
line @ the other end of the device.  They are really just flagged cells
(ATM) or Frames (FR), but you configure that virtual path as if nothing
will ever come in contact with each PCV.  This is quite amazing when
you get into DS3's or OC3s interfaces (no 2500
series Cisco processor found here :-)

Did I come close to
answering your question ???

Re: Ethernet Collisions

2000-08-18 Thread John Neiberger

Collisions using 10BaseT, half-duplex ethernet are to be expected. They are
the rule, not the exception, and unless you are getting an exceptionally
high ratio of collisions to frames output, I wouldn't worry about it.

Now, if you were seeing LATE collisions between the router and the switch, I
would think that you have the switchport set for full duplex, which will
cause late collisions if connected to a half duplex device.

HTH,
John Neiberger

Re: PRI Connection

You have to be mindful of the PRI switch type 4ess, 5ess, or DMS. You can
get all of that from the telco that brought the circuit. You should be able
to drop the ckt right into the wic on your router and configure from there.
Use CCO to get the necessary reference material and you'll do fine.

Chuck,

My understanding/knowledge of QoS and the like is the
same as yours. I'm not a QoS, MPLS, Traffic
Engineering Guru but I was just explaining the basic
issues with what he was asking for. I've read the QoS
book (the skinny one with the blue cover) and the book
basically has same conclusion. I'm not sure of all the
details of MPLS VPNs but that is what people are
talking about on other lists when it comes to VPNs and
QoS stuff. It's going to be awhile before QoS, etc is
really effective across the 'net end-to-end (if ever).

RE: Wireless

2000-08-18 Thread dacarl4

Raphael,

I just asked one of the guys in my group that is testing all of Cisco's
Wireless (Aironet) equipment. He said that as long as the Airport hub is
802.11 DSSS compliant it should work. I see that you did already read that
the AirPort is 802.11 so I would think you will be good to go.

Hope this helps.

Subject:Wireless

Hi all,
I'm thinking about getting a IMAC for my mother, I want to get the Apple

I have a few questions...
email me.

Re: switching 2.0 --help

2000-08-18 Thread shanseverijn

When I took the test all I got hit on was
-trunking
-VTP
-STP (sh spantree, portfast, uplinkfast)
-Mulitcast. (CGMP, IGMP, DVMRP)
-Of course VLANS
-RSM (cmd syntax, etc.)
-it's weird alot ofthe questions on the 2.0 tests are pretty vague only a
couple ask for you to specify cmd's now. THe 2.0 tests are easier in my
eyes. How hard is it to click on the exhibit button and pick a cmd from a
list.

Hope this helps...

Re: BCRAN

2000-08-18 Thread shanseverijn

Don't worry about typing in alot of cmds. The test only has 6-8 questions
where they have you type in actual cmds. There easy.
eg. copy run start, sh tech, sh cpu proc, sh interface.

Know your ISDN, AAA, Virtual templates / profiles, DDR, x.25, frame-relay.
For some reason they hit you on alot of product specific info like seies of
routers and what each model has for interfaces.

Re: BCRAN

2000-08-18 Thread Daniel Boutet

I just wrote the exam and there was a lot of "writting the commands"
questions but you had a choice of about 80 or so commands.
Know them because they have tricky commands just to confuse the hell out of
you.

Know ISDN and modem stuff very well. Just for reinforcement learn AT
commands.
A few frame and x25 questions. Just a few queuing, aaa, and compression
question.
PPP of course was the main focus.
I got 795 and the passing was 709. I really did not know the MODELS enough.
700 series to 12000 (at least know what their purpose are.)

I could add more but I think that you get the picture.

Re: question on ip packet

2000-08-18 Thread Jason

There is absolutely no value whatsoever in this reply. Please stop reading
if you are expecting to find any thing of value in this message.
The only reason I'm replying is that I figure if I'm going to have to wade
through all this cow jokes and whathaveyou, I might as well add to it.

By the way, I'm a CCMC but I do not know what is inside milk. Is it white
color or can I get brown color and pink color milk from the cow or do I have
to feed them differently ? . I know this is a simple Q, but I know lots of
CCMC working in multi-million dollar milk farm who doesn't know how to
config a router or server and I figure I'm ahead of them in this game . NOW
if you are wondering how I get my CCMC, well, I know how to milk a Cow and
the Sybex book on CCMC never ask me to look at the color of the milk. I also
make use of the CCMC for Dummies book. I feel that that is a great book and
is just the right book for me.

BGP mesh

2000-08-18 Thread Frank Wells

Would someone be so kind as to explain why BGP speakers within a common AS
need to be fully meshed please.

I am reading some Cisco documentation that is attached to this message.

The paragraphs in red are what is not quite clear to me.

Thanks a lot.

Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Figure 12-2: Internal BGP Example

!Router A
router bgp 100
neighbor 180.10.30.1 remote-as 100
neighbor 190.10.50.1 remote-as 100
neighbor 170.10.20.2 remote-as 300
network 150.10.0.0

!Router B
router bgp 100
neighbor 150.10.30.1 remote-as 100
neighbor 175.10.40.1 remote-as 400
neighbor 180.10.30.1 remote-as 100
network 190.10.50.0

!Router C
router bgp 400
neighbor 175.10.40.2 remote-as 100
network 175.10.0.0

!Router D
router bgp 100
neighbor 150.10.30.1 remote-as 100
neighbor 190.10.50.1 remote as 100
network 190.10.0.0

When a BGP speaker receives an update from other BGP speakers in its own AS (that is, via IBGP), the receiving BGP speaker uses EBGP to forward the update to external BGP speakers only. This behavior of IBGP is why it is necessary for BGP speakers within an AS to be fully meshed.
For example, in Figure 12-2, if there were no IBGP session between Routers B and D, Router A would send updates from Router B to Router E but not to Router D. If you want Router D to receive updates from Router B, Router B must be configured so that Router D is a BGP peer.

I've run into this before. The only way to do this quickly is to take the
flash from the msfc and put it into a 4500 or 4700. From there, you can
partition the flash, and copy tftp flash the code on there. Let me know if
you need anything else.

RE: switching 2.0 --help

2000-08-18 Thread Lewis, John M

I don't think that CLSC exam-prep book would be enough to pass the exam as
the new switching 2.0 has a lot more then cat 5000 on it. I think they test
different things. The passing score is 699.

RE: DSL newbie

2000-08-18 Thread jeongwoo park

Hi Chuck
Thanks for your reply.
Since dsl is using existing phone line, is this phone
line coming from the wall supposed to be connected to
the dsl router? This phone line has RJ-11 connector.
Then would this connector fit to any port on dsl
router? IF so, which port?
Also, what ip address are those pc's going to take?
Are they going to take any ip addresses as long as
they are private ip addresses, such as 10.#.#.#?
Besides that, does he still need dsl modem? or no need
any more?

Re: BGP mesh

2000-08-18 Thread David L. Blair

First, no idea.  But I have found in my
readings that you can also turn "Route Reflectors", RR,  to eliminate the
need for the fully meshed.  The formula to fully mesh n routers is
n(n-1)/2.  For 10 routers that is
10(10-1)/2 equals 45 routes.  Somehow RR
eliminate the need to specify all those routes.

Re: Wireless

2000-08-18 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

As long as you buy wireless devices that adhere to the IEEE 802.11
standard, you shouldn't have any serious problems. I have gotten a variety
of installations working with wireless, using a mix of vendors' equipment.

A Cisco person at Networkers told me that there might be a problem with
encryption not working correctly when getting Cisco's card to talk to
Apple's AirPort hub, but I have not found that to be the case.

As with any new technology, you might have to do a bit of tinkering to get
everything working. The only gotcha I ran into was that on the PC you have
to type in the name of the LAN you want to get on, (aka the Service Set ID
or SSID). It's case sensitive, which I didn't expect. On the Mac, (which
is, of course, much more user friendly &;-), a pop-up menu appeared and you
could just select the LAN name. No typing in SSIDs.

BGP mesh

2000-08-18 Thread Frank Wells

Would someone be so kind as to explain why BGP speakers within a common AS
need to be fully meshed please.

I am reading some Cisco documentation that is attached to this message.

The paragraphs in red are what is not quite clear to me.

Thanks a lot.

Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Figure 12-2: Internal BGP Example

!Router A
router bgp 100
neighbor 180.10.30.1 remote-as 100
neighbor 190.10.50.1 remote-as 100
neighbor 170.10.20.2 remote-as 300
network 150.10.0.0

!Router B
router bgp 100
neighbor 150.10.30.1 remote-as 100
neighbor 175.10.40.1 remote-as 400
neighbor 180.10.30.1 remote-as 100
network 190.10.50.0

!Router C
router bgp 400
neighbor 175.10.40.2 remote-as 100
network 175.10.0.0

!Router D
router bgp 100
neighbor 150.10.30.1 remote-as 100
neighbor 190.10.50.1 remote as 100
network 190.10.0.0

When a BGP speaker receives an update from other BGP speakers in its own AS (that is, via IBGP), the receiving BGP speaker uses EBGP to forward the update to external BGP speakers only. This behavior of IBGP is why it is necessary for BGP speakers within an AS to be fully meshed.
For example, in Figure 12-2, if there were no IBGP session between Routers B and D, Router A would send updates from Router B to Router E but not to Router D. If you want Router D to receive updates from Router B, Router B must be configured so that Router D is a BGP peer.

Helping Folks Out- WAS question on ip packet

2000-08-18 Thread Chuck Larrieu

This thread did get a bit carried away. I believe I provided an adequate, if
minimal answer to the question. As one of the smart asses of the group, and
one prone to a bit of sarcasm myself, I still think that it is more than
fair for other folks - new folks and regulars - to point out that this is
indeed supposed to be a place where people can ask for help, information,
resources without belittlement.

Let me offer all folks new to the certification game some information on
protocols.

One can find a wealth of information at
http://www.radcom-inc.com/acad/acatoc.htm , including the World of protocols
book I referred to. Everything you didn't want to know about the contents of
those headers at all layers.

I would also like to ask - how many people, without looking at a chart
someplace, can define the contents of an IP header, a TCP header, a UDP
header. I mean bit for bit in order? I would guess that most of us have an
idea of the contents. Most of us know there are 20 bytes in both the TCP and
IP headers, and that the UDP header is 8 bytes 9 had to look it up. Was
thinking 10 ), but could tell all without referring to something.

This is the kind of depth that is not covered in CCNA or CCNP, and with all
due respect to the difficulty of the CCIE, I don't recall anything about
this in my reading and references there either.

It's ok to ask questions that will further your knowledge about routing,
routers, and how it all works. Honest.

Chuck

RE: CCIE Written exam material

2000-08-18 Thread Dale Holmes

It doesn't sound fishy so much as it sounds poor... It costs a lot to start
a business these days (having done so recently I know for sure...).

I am sure that they intend to co-locate their own dedicated server somewhere
and buy their own domain, etc. once they get off the ground.

I see nothing wrong with some technical folks getting together and starting
a business on a shoestring. If it never goes anywhere, the loss is minimal,
if it only does moderately well, then at least they have reduced overhead to
a bare minimum. If it takes off wildly, then they can re-invest the profits
and build the business to meet the demand.

I have to say that the sample questions that they show are much like a test
that I once took... Maybe their materials are OK. If you spend $50 bucks and
the materials don't get you through the exam, it won't be the end of the
world. If, however, the materials never show, or turn out to be total crap,
then that's another story, but that could happen with stuff from anybody,
whether or not they own their own domain and web/smtp server.

What they ought to do, though, if they want to instill a sense of confidence
in potential customers, is publish a contact name and address (real physical
address). That way at least people would feel like they could be reasonably
assured some success if they ever had make any kind of complaint about the
service...

Just my cents...

Also check the AIM daughter card is seated correctly, also DRAM chips are
seated correctly as these can cause SEGV violation errors.

Re: Transit traffic

2000-08-18 Thread Andy Harding

transit means where traffic from a direct BGP peer is not destined for your
AS - ie it transits your AS to go somewhere else. this is common between
service providers, but ISP customers will typically take their upstream as
transit, but the ISP not use the customer as transit
