Re: Max Vty's

2001-03-12 Thread Groupstudy

I wanted to configure some additional vty's a while back and couldn't find
the answer. I posted a question to the CCIE lab mailing list and someone
told me this. I haven't checked it first hand on an Enterprise-running
router yet though!

Am i in the wrong place, of is this the cisco study group? As a lab router
the 1600 series is great (cheap, small, low power) and will run all of the
routing protocols (exzcept is-is IIRC).

Hi Group.

Is the situation really that bad as we are hearing ? If so , then I guess we
need to rethink of these certs. For people who are in the process /mid-way
to acheive these certs its disheartening to know that they are not of the
same value anymore.

I heard that a lot of CCNP guys are on bench. Is this true?

How long do u think that this trend will continue? Personally, I feel this
is more of a clean up process and things will fall in place in due course.

There are two issues here. One is which, if any, versions of IOS for
the 1600 platform support BGP.

Second, if the goal is to learn BGP, there is no benefit to having a
full routing table. What are you going to do with it? Inspect every
line? To put this into perspective, and rounding off a bit, the
default-free routing table has around 100,000 routes in it. A tier 1
provider will have an additional
30,000 or so customer and internal routes.

Many of these routes (remember, in BGP speak, a route is a
destination) will have four potential paths to use. Depending on the
number of peers, there may be appreciably sized views that differ per
peer or per peer group.

Even in operational practice, full routes aren't always necessary.
Depending on the policies in effect, you might want to see only
customer routes of your provider, or routes that belong to some
community, etc.

I really don't believe it is that bad for people with tech skills. Yeah dot
coms are mostly a distant memory, but sane companies that use the net as
part of their business plan, as opposed to the entire business plan, still
need people to make it go.

Quite correct that DLCIs are locally significant. When you order a
virtual circuit, the carrier will give you two DLCIs. For example,
if you ordered a circuit between Lagos and New York, your Lagos site
might be told that DLCI 71 takes them to New York, and the New York
site might be told that DLCI 113 takes them to Lagos.

In the real world, people make mistakes at the provider. One of the
more common errors is accidentally reversing the DLCI assignments.
If the virtual circuit in question didn't come up, one of the first
things I might try, after verifying that neither DLCI 71 or 113 is
active at either site, is to use DLCI 71 in Lagos and 113 in New York.

Access list to deny IPSEC on C1600

2001-03-12 Thread Damien Kelly

Hi All

One of our office is on ISDN dialup and has a firewall behind it on the LAN,
we have an issue with the line connecting to the ISP every min, 24 x 7, as
you can imagine the ISDN bill is huge. We have determined the VPN link is
cauing the dialup's. The Cisco is a 1603, I want to create an accesslist,
But don't know how to define protocol 50 ( IPSEC ), as it isn't really TCP
or UDP

Can I set an access list as follows

Access-list 101 deny IP any any eq 50

Or do I need to replace the IP with a different definition

Any Suggestions

( If I can get the IPSec definition, I may create a timebased accesslist, so
as not to defeat the purpose of the VPN. )

Thanks Damien Kelly

Hi everyone

Just wondered if anyone has heard of this problem as I am waiting for

I am trying to upgrade a 2610 from 8mb flash to 16 mb flash. I ordered the

Kingston advised that this is a known problem and that I should be using

Now I have to wait for them to re-create the problem in the U.S.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I also wrote this examn on Friday but my sentiments differ from that of
Andrew.
I found this examn to be the most ambiguous of all the Cisco examns
I've ever written! Some of the questions did not even make any sense.
Unfortunately the non-disclosure agreement does not permit me to discuss
these so I cannot prove my point. And to prove that this is not a matter
of just sour grapes, I got a final score of 945/1000. Although more than
85% of the exam was elementary, I was not impressed with some of the
other questions.

Subject: Radiius with Windows2000

Has anyone got any Cisco products to run with the Windows2000 Radius? I was
curios as we are trying to get the Cisco 5001 VPN to work with Win2K radius
but have not been successful. It does work with funk radius, however I don't
want to have to buy a third party product when windows has it built in. We
did have it working at one time, but when we upgraded the IOS on the VPN box
it suddenly stopped working...Still had errors when it worked, but at least
it worked.

Frame-relay traffic shaping with custom queuing

2001-03-12 Thread Sam Deckert

Hello everyone,

It has been good listening to all of you, I have learnt a lot!

Just wondered if anyone has any thoughts on a problem I am working on at the
moment.

It involves a frame-relay network here in Australia. It consists of a
hub-and-spoke topology - one central site connected to all other sites using
sub-interfaces with point-to-point links.

Since this network was setup, the users have been complaining of slow
responses when using applications such as Telnet or Citrix. It appears that
Lotus Notes replication traffic is hogging the links and causing these
delays.

What I am looking at doing is using frame-relay traffic shaping with
traffic-rate throttling and custom queuing. I have identified the protocols
and ports that need high priority, however am a bit unsure as to how to
allocate the byte-count values.

Apparently if the byte-count is too high then the router will service one
particular queue for too long and will cause delays to other queues. I am
wondering what would be a reasonable byte-count in order for this not to
happen.

The link that I will be testing this on initially has a CIR of 192kbps. I
was going to setup three queues, one for telnet, one for citrix and one
default for everything else (other traffic consists of Notes
mail/replication, NT domain replication).

What proportion of the bandwidth should I give to each protocol? I was
thinking about 1/3 for each queue, as if a queue's reserved bandwidth is not
being fully used other queues can use itany thoughts? If anyone could
give me some idea as to what byte-counts would be ok to use on this kind of
link, that would be great. Any other suggestions/comments would also be
good.

In calculating the byte-count, I have found the average citrix frame size to
be about 120bytes, and the average telnet frame size to be about 80bytes.

This is my first real job involving Cisco - I am in my last year at
University.

Thankyou for reading all this! Hope you can help!

Sam.

i do not know what you been smoking but
the udp is 500 for ipsec iskmp (or simply ike)
you can verify simply checkin on your
winx machine's port list.
50 and 51 is not related to ipsec port but
they are protocols.
of course related to ipsec.

Hi All,
I just wanna know if 1600 routers support BGP. If yes,
then which IOS version and what are the memory
requirements. I've heard that BGP is rather a platform
dependent routing protocol. Is this true? I've tried
12.0 IP and IP/PLUS versions and it says 'Unknown
Routing Protocol' in response to the command 'Router

PPP callback

2001-03-12 Thread Roberto Luesma

I've been trying to implement PPP callback for remote Microsoft hots. =
The
access server is a Cisco 2509 router.

Configuration seems to be OK but everytime we dial into the access =
server
with the username/password we don't get disconnected and no callback is
performed.

Looking into Cisco documentation, we found out that in order to run
Microsoft callback, we need Cisco IOS 11.3.2 T or later.

This is the version we have:

IOS (tm) 3000 Software (IGS-I-L), Version 11.0(16), RELEASE SOFTWARE =
(fc1)
Copyright (c) 1986-1997 by cisco Systems, Inc.

Anibody can tell me if we need an update?? Is this version enough for =
our
goal???

Re: Building crossover cable

2001-03-12 Thread EA Louie

If you don't have a good understanding of "null modem", then you'd be better
off buying a crossover cable with standard connectors and then using the
individual adapter cables at the device ends (for example, V.35 or RS-449
crossover off the shelf). Otherwise, you'll spend more time troubleshooting
and debugging your cable (bad pushpins, cold solder joints, loose
connections, etc) than actually using it. That being said, here's the
pinout for a V.35 crossover cable from the DB-60 serial connector on a Cisco
interface to a V.35 Winchester connector: (use the wiring in Table 23)

CISCO PRESS BOOKS: Really good books BUT they do
contain errors. All the books that I have read have
them. Some are just typos and others simply poor
phrasing or grammar. (Routing TCP/IP has some subnet
mask typos that make it confusing)

The laura chappell (spelling?) ACRC book: Some major
mistakes, but a decent book overall.

Subject: OSPF multicast addresses

Hi everyone,

I am trying to figure out in which situations certain OSPF multicast
addresses are used. The two multicast addresses used in OSPF that I know of
are 224.0.0.5 and 224.0.0.6. From my understanding, in a broadcast network,
all ospf routers send link info to the DR/BDR with the address of 224.0.0.6.
The DR will then send all the data back to the DROTHER routers using the
address of 224.0.0.5. Is this correct?

I previously thought that the DR sent the data back using the address of
224.0.0.6, but this wouldn't work because the DROTHER routers don't listen
to that address. Is this also correct?

Thanks in advance,
Fred

Reverse Telnet on 2600 routers not working

2001-03-12 Thread John Neiberger

I posted this problem about a year or so ago and we never did find a
resolution to it and I still can't find anything on CCO about it. The
problem is that I can't reverse telnet out of the AUX port on a 2600
router. I have a dial modem attached to it that does function, yet when
I try to RT to it the connection is refused.

Here is the config:

line aux 0
 modem InOut
 transport input all
 stopbits 1
 speed 38400
 flowcontrol hardware

Someone suggested adding "no exec", but that had no effect. This exact
config works just fine on any 2500 in our network, but I have yet to get
RT working with a 2600 series router running 12.0 or 12.1.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
John

Are the original Domain permissions still attached to them?

RE: 6500 Catalyst Boots straight to MSFC router module ...

2001-03-12 Thread Ramachandran, Ranjit

Hi

You have a switch which has been shipped with the router IOS . what you
need to do is to upgrade the supervisor software IOS . Please be careful ,
in case you use redundant sups and flash cards. Download the IOS from the
site , remove one flash card from the switch and upgrade to switch IOS ,
then do the same for the other flash card too . It works , but its funny ,
cisco always ships it this way . Normally a session command needs to work ,
but basically the switch thinks that its a router in the presence of the
MSFC card in switch and straightaway boots as a router , hence the router
prompt instead of the normal switch prompt .

Thanks

We see the radius request make it to the server but no authentication is
ever given. I know there are a lot of attributes to configure. You have to
actually set the VPN box up as the radius client not the person that is

Subject: Reverse Telnet on 2600 routers not working

Thanks,
John

RE: O/T One question CID test

2001-03-12 Thread Leigh Anne Chisholm

If "none of the above" is the correct answer, why would "E" be the right one
to select? If "E" actually WAS the correct answer, there would be no need
for "F". Thus, F must truly be the correct response IF E is correct.

Dang!

Job wanted: Test question writer. Will work for slivered peanuts. (-:

Personally I would have selected D. My reasoning? A and B are out because
no one EVER puts requirements BELOW the multiple choice selections. C is
out because it could be construed as being too much like A. E and F are out
because someone can't be that silly to develop a question where you would
use the correct answer as a distractor also.

**DISCLAIMER**: I refuse to take any responsibility should you encounter a
question like this on any industry test. It's just entirely possible E or F
>IS< the correct answer...

Nope, I posted the entire AUX port config. This exact configs works
perfectly on all 2500 series routers, but reverse telnet does not work
with this config on a 2600. The dial backup modem functions on both
routers, though. If the main circuit goes down, the backup modem will
dial out and proceeds to function normally, only reverse telnet is
broken.

Re: O/T One question CID test

2001-03-12 Thread The.Rock

With that kind of so called deductive reasoning, F would also be a correct
answer. Here's the reason. E is negating all the above answers ( that is to
say that A,B,C and D are wrong). Then F says that even E is wrong. So F
covers all basis more so than E. The simple logic is that there is no
"answer" given to the question in the first place, so how could one argue
that one answer is better with such trivial choices. It's like the chicken
and the egg factor, which one came firstProve it And what is
logic??..And if you do know, based on who's definition?...Presumable one
that you were taught, which is opinion and biased anyway..So where does that
leave you, back to square 1.

I posted this problem about a year or so ago and we never did find a
resolution to it and I still can't find anything on CCO about it. The
problem is that I can't reverse telnet out of the AUX port on a 2600
router. I have a dial modem attached to it that does function, yet
when
I try to RT to it the connection is refused.

Here is the config:

line aux 0
 modem InOut
 transport input all
 stopbits 1
 speed 38400
 flowcontrol hardware

Someone suggested adding "no exec", but that had no effect. This
exact
config works just fine on any 2500 in our network, but I have yet to

Wanted to get everyone's input on this, every last statement on an
access lists should be some sort of permit all, right? Check out this
question, the answer is B. I thought it would be D. Any solutions to this,
or is this a wrong answer from the author !!!

1. Given the following criteria for granting access from a remote site
to your LAN:

Restrict access on interface E0
E0=128.12.22.55
Deny access to telnet, FTP
All other types of operations.

Which line should come last in configuring your access list?

A. Access-List 101
B. Access-List 101 deny E0 telnet FTP
C. Access list 101 allow all except FTP telnet
D. Access list 101 permit IP 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 any

Subject: Does BENT 8.5 support NT permissions on a redirected restore

Hello All,

Does BENT 8.5 support NT permissions on a redirected restore?

1.Backup of shared/NT folders with NT Domain permissions.
2.Server crashed
3.Re-directed restore to another server

Are the original Domain permissions still attached to them?

Thanks!

Martin E.

God bless you

Two ISP's

2001-03-12 Thread AABAN34

I have one ISP with 192K going to the Internet and I am using NAT not PAT
to resolve my UN-register to register to the Internet. I now want to add a
differant ISP now to the same router, a full T/1. What are the pro's and
con's to this? I need to keep the 192k for reason's but 100 share the 192K
link and it's slow. I need to setup NAT on T/1 interface I know that? should
I use policy routing coming from my LAN to the T/1? would this work?

Re: Hardware Req's

2001-03-12 Thread Bob Timmons

16MB of Flash is nice, but I don't believe required for a lab. You can get
virtually any IOS image on 8MB of flash by using a compression utility.
Personally, I'd recommend 8MB Flash and 16MB RAM. The RAM is
cheaper and if you're running any kind of Enterprise IOS or one that does
Firewall, etc, you'll need the RAM. I don't know why they'd recommend
16Flash/8Ram. If you have a 12MB Flash image, chances are, you'll need
more than 8MB RAM to run it. The 12.1.7 IOS that has IP/IPX/AT for the
25xx series is 9MB. You can probably compress this to about 4-5MB for the
Flash. The largest IOS I could find on CCO was 16,158,604. I compressed
that down to 7,249,938. That would fit nicely on 8MB of Flash and would
definitely require 16MB RAM.

A/S serial port connecting to console port.

2001-03-12 Thread Changchun Xie

Any one know how to setup the connection from A/S serial port on 2523 to the
console port?

I got a cisco2523. It has 8 A/S serial ports. The A/S serial ports are set
to "physical-layer async". I am wondering whether they can be used to
connecting to a cisco console port. If that works, I will use it as a
frame-switch and also as a terminal server.

Does anyone can help? or it's just undoable.

thanks,

Chan.

Re: Hardware Req's

2001-03-12 Thread Bob Timmons

Oh,

I guess I should mention that using a compression utility could potentially
cause
problems in production environments. Use your best judgement. I only use
it
for lab purposes. If you're in a production environment, have the company
shell
out the dough-ray-me for the extra flash if required.

Bob

http://bobtimmons.home.mindspring.com/bin/mzmaker.exe

Please note that this utility only runs on a "DOS compatible" platform (no
MACs, no UNIX, etc.) Also, please note that the flash images it produces
will run only on 68000-series Cisco routers (eg. 3000, 2500, older 4000 and
7000, etc). It will *not* work with RISC router processors.

If you wish to test the images this utility produces *BEFORE* copying those
images into flash memory, simply install a TFTP server and have the IOS
image downloaded by TFTP on bootup. This will provide a means to test the
compressed flash image.

Yes, It seems you have not enough IP addresses to run BGP4.So, policy routing is a good
choice for you. I formerly implement the similar solution under a similar situation
except I did NAT on a firewall insteading of on the router.Did you get some additional
public IP addresses from the second ISP?

Re: smallest BGP Network size

2001-03-12 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

>What is the smallest network that can support BGP ?

Again, distinguish between external routing and the BGP protocol. The
BGP protocol itself imposes no restriction on prefix length, but the
policies of the ISPs involved do.

>we have a /27 network with two ISP UUNET and @work

From which ISP do you have the /27? It's unlikely that a prefix that
small would ever be globally routable. If it is from UUNET space,
both UUNET and @work would have to agree to let @work advertise that
block. Very unlikely that would happen.

If you must solve this problem from a pure routing standpoint, it is
probably much more realistic to get two diverse connections to UUNET,
assuming your address space is part of theirs.

There may be other strategies if you have address assignments from
both UUNET and @work, but they will probably involve DNS, NAT, and
possibly secondary server addresses.

Unfortunately, there are no general solutions for multiprovider,
multihomed routing for small networks. To help more, I'd really need
to know more about your applications -- what problem you are trying
to solve. Do you support servers that need to be reached from the
Internet? Is the connectivity for your clients reaching external
servers? Are there VPNs involved?

>when the router is full configured for load balancing traffic going out

Just started looking at it tonight. I will be speaking with its
author at the IETF meeting next week. I would think long and hard
before I'd claim any router is the "best" core router. Individual
numbers can be misleading.

I have a draft out on single-router BGP convergence time,
http://www.isi.edu/internet-drafts/draft-berkowitz-bgpcon-00.txt. It
is fairly rough, but starts talking about the interactions of
multiple parameters. Unfortunately, the appendix giving various ISP
applications for BGP routers isn't in that draft, but will be in the
next one.

It's misleading to think that all ISP routers need to be "core."
Arguably, the highest-bandwidth "core" routers inside an ISP may not
need to run full BGP, but have more stringent demands on OSPF, ISIS,
and/or MPLS. Think of RFC 2547 "P" routers.

An ISP POP access router might have the greatest number of BGP routes
and paths, but not as much bandwidth requirements. If the POP router
primarily deals with customers, it will advertise only default and
partial routes to many of them. Only a small proportion of customers
want full routes. A POP router will also generally accept only a
small number of routes from customers.

Interprovider routers at tier 1 are unlikely to need to exchange full
routes Such routers are bandwidth-intense, but the definition of a
tier 1 is that you exchange only customer routes (perhaps
oversimplifying, but that's close) with other tier 1 providers.

A revised draft will be presented at the IETF next week to the
benchmarking methodology (BMWG) and inter-domain routing (IDR,
responsible for BGP). This draft is coauthored by Alvaro Retana at
Cisco, and Sue Hares and Padma Krishnaswamy at NextHop (the former
GateD organization, which is the base for quite a number of
implementations). Hopefully, we will also get a Juniper coauthor.
The plan is that it will become a BMWG working group document in the
standards track (well, as much as standards track applies to
performance measurement documents, a subtlety of the IETF process).
