I took the recert at the last networkers 2001 in LA.  I didn't study and I
got 892 out of 1000.  When I took it you needed at least 750 or something
like that.  The questions were a hodge podge of the 4 other current test I
believe.  If you are working with the equipment it should be a breeze.  This
is the reason why the cisco certs are so important.  To make sure that you
are keeping up with technology.

Any security concerns if rsh enabled on Cisco routers [7:26818]

I just find that Cisco routers can support rsh so that I can use a UNIX
machine to remotely execute command. However, I would like to know is there
any security holes if I enable rsh at Cisco routers? If so, how to improve
it?

A standard Cat5k does not look into a packet at a layer greater than layer
2 (MAC).  If you want a switch to perform this type of function then either
trunk your traffic via a router or get a switch with a router blade.

Frame Relay question. [7:26819]

Hi..
Assume that I have several routers attached to a FR Cloud and  they are
already communicating with each other. Now, one of you (who reads this
subject) wants to build up a new connection between one of his routers and
mine. Since there is a common network between us, each router attached to
that cloud has to have a unique identifier. Using this identifier, anybody
should be able to set-up a PVC or a SVC to another persons router (if he is
granted,of course) anytime.
 
Now , here is (are) the question(s).*  I have not seen such an
identifier during the configuration of FR circuits  *. Don't tell me
that DLCI is the identifier, because it has no global significance, but just
a local parameter. In this case, how is a FR packet switched inside this
common FR cloud.? Don't we have to worry about configuring PVC s, because
this is (is it really) done by Telco?. If so, how do we set up SVCs then?
What kind of a header does a FR packet have. How does a FR switch tell my
packet from those of others.?
 
I would very much appreciate your enlightment . Just give me a clue, no
details needed. Thanks in advance.

I think I was not able to explain what i want do. I want to configure my
1003 Cisco Router so that if it fails to connect to one access server it
should automatically switch to another access router somewhere else. It's
simple to backup a serial connection. You configure your in your serial
interface a backup dialer interface for example. But you cannot do the same
in your bri interface.

segment from inside  or vice versa.Since Pix can act as a router ,will
enabling routing solve this purpose without use of NAT.Applying access list

do I go about?

Have you checked the keys are the same in the server and router, also check
the source IP address the router is using and that which is in your server's
entry for the router. Check the logs on your TACACS server, otherwise I
think more info is needed

CCIE One Day Lab FAIL [7:26835]

O.k.  I sat the exam last week and failed but by not a lot.  Silly mistakes
killed me.  For those of you who have still to experience the one day lab
then please read ahead.

Mostly everyone on this list stated that there was no time to do the lab or
check anything.  I found this to be so untrue it was unreal.  Most people on
the lab finished with an hour to go and I had more time than this to check
and try to get the annoying things that didn't work to work (although I
failed to get two things working)... So from that, my advice is if you are
stuck on something, move on and work your way through the workbook.  Once
you get to the end you should have plenty time to fix (if you can) the
problems you left.

From my experience of Brussels everything was there.  The proctors turned up
when they should, answered any questions you asked, there were icons for
each element you had to configure, there was paper, there were pens,
pencils, sharpeners and erasers.  Lunch was horrible although I don't think
anyone was to bothered about lunch, so if you are a person who cannot go
without lunch bring a packed lunch with you (just don't put your answers in
your lunch box !!).

All in all enjoy the experience and READ the questions (even the smallest
detail).  I am resetting in Feb next year and I reckon the pressure will
really be on then.  Most people fail 1st time anyway is what I can say this
time but next time ??

What do you want to do with it?  In the real world, it can be very 
hard to get a provider-independent /24, and even harder to get it 
globally routed.  Your best solution may be to design your 
environment to be renumbering-friendly, and get a /24 from your 
upstream provider.

In general, you will have to demonstrate 50% immediate use of a /20 
to get your own allocation.

Incidentally, don't think Class C in getting assignments, think /24 
(if that's what you actually need). Class-based allocation is long 
obsolete in the public network, regardless of what Cisco teaches in 
basic courses.

connect the RAS server using PPP and I use the router's local user database
for authenication. It can works without any problems. However, I cannot
trace when and which users login. Is there any commands can do that? Here

 That's pretty much the list of gear that you need.  When you say

knew
 of ccbootcamp).  After I went through lab8, I realized how little I
actually
 knew, and got my butt in gear for my studying.

Anyway, I also have a standard cabling that works fine for me . I actually
spent time going through the lab scenerios trying to figure out if my eqpt
would works for the scenerio and how to optimize the eqpts placements , and
that waste lots of time because it has to be repeated for every lab
scenerio, I'm however glad that you are working on updating the scenerios.

 We are in the process of going through ALL of the labs, removing the
errors,
 removing the old technologies, making the configs standardized for our
racks
 (frame-relay interfaces, router #s, etc), and including pre-config files
 (for IP addresses, etc, like the new 1-day lab).

It's not so much the binding as the quality of the presentation, I could
scan a page and let everybody take a look at what I mean, part of the edge
of the page is missing, etc..However, I don't see the point to that This
info is just meant to help people decided ... The other problem is that the
labs was standardise on your eqpt, i.e. if you have AGS, you assume
everybody has AGS, etc... so it's difficult to find the exact number of
interfaces, etc as what you have in the scenerios..

  somewhat irregular . IPExperts has not stated their official policy on
  updates, is it free or will there be some small fees. I have bought

If the PC is on a local LAN segment with a Cisco
router, you could policy-route the traffic. Any
traffic going out port 80, and other web ports use the
broadband for their next-hop, and if it's email
another next-hop.

On Cisco.com, search for policy-routing and route-maps
and you should get some ideas.

Well, not quite. First, CertificationZone products (as distinct from 
IP Expert, which is a partner), have a somewhat different model than 
other study product vendors.

Essentially, a subscription gives you three kinds of service, all 
related.  First, the monthly topic has a fairly extensive tutorial 
(25-35 pages, sometimes longer) on a particular technology.  There 
will be at least one of these a month at the CCIE (RS) level, plus 
an increasing number at CCNP and specialist level. Coupled with the 
tutorial will be a set of sample questions and one or more scenarios. 
We also put up various short papers on narrowly defined subjects 
which may or may not contain a scenario.

The key point is that we believe having a focused tutorial better 
prepares the candidate for success on the lab.  In the same manner, 
our questions are not questions alone, but contain substantial 
explanations of the correct answers and of answers that might seem 
misleadingly correct.  Many people have suggested that these 
questions sometimes are harder than the actual exam, and I'm not 
complaining if this is so -- we intend to build a base of 
understanding that will put you in good shape for the exam -- 
thinking of the army motto, sweat in training saves blood in combat.

We should be adding, in the next month or two, some additional 
scenario related things, but we are not trying to compete 
head-to-head on nothing but the number of scenarios.

Incidentally, if you find something pathetic, tell us about it so 
we either can fix it or clarify it.

No, you do not.  If you want to do a No Nat configuration, make an acl for 
no nat (using id 0) for the ips you do not want to translate.  Of course, 
this is only sensible if you have registered ips on the inside.  If not, 
you really should use NAT.

The pix is generally a horrible router, it only supports rip.A 
router in the most generic sense of a multihomed host that can move from 
interface a to interface b is barely a router.  Heck, Windows NT can do 
that.  (shudder)

You have not defined what security policy you want.  access-lists for 
what?  Inbound or outbound?  If you use PAT (which is really a misnamed 
ciscoism), you have some light level of security for inbound 
conneciton.  By default, no one can hit your inside from the outside unless 
you have statics + access lists.  If you use static NATs, you WILL open a 
security hole for sure unless you got ACLs blocking on the outside 
interface.  Remember, the inflexible Cisco pix can only do inbound ACLs to 
any interface.  (However, you can still simulate the inbound outbound 
security policy by putting it on the other interfaces).

You have not mentioned inbound or outbound.  If you mean inbound, use a 
static (from the outside to the inside) and write an acl that allows him 
access through.

I know you said this is a test environment.  However, I think you should 
review some of the pix's basic configurations on Cisco's web site to get a 
better understanding and should definitely get a consultant to review your 
final configuration before deployment.

knew of that had developed a 5-day BGP class. At this time Global Knowledge
had a 3-day one and Cisco didn't even have one. Having taught for many
years, when I saw Larry teach, I knew, hands-down, that he was the best
instructor that I had ever seen. You'll really like him and you'll really
enjoy the BGP class he developed. If I recall correctly, each BGP router pod
has 5 routers which you and a classmate will share. If you are planning for
the CCIE, this is a must-have class!

One thing that surprised me about your post was that Computer Data was
sponsoring the class--Larry used to do his teaching through IMS in Atlanta.
I've had problems with IMS in the past (ie, them not paying me money they
owed me) and Larry probably ran into the same thing. If you take the class,

The procedure does work but not exactly as you might think. The push button
on the front doesnt reset the config( or not on mine) but does bypass the
config on startup. You can edit the startup, change the password, etc then
save it and reboot. I had to do this when I mistyped the file name for a
remote boot file off a TFTP server.. oops..

IF you have tried this and it doesnt reset, take the cover off and spray
some contact cleaner into the pushswitch. This switch is rarely used and it
will get all kinds of crud in it ranging from smoke deposits to corrosion.
Sometimes pushing the switch from the CCA instead of the button works.

The wan provider maps the DLCI to the IP of the FR switch at the opposite
end through special tables..  Furthermore, the Frame Relay header is stipped
off when entering the cloud and travels around via regualr IP or ATM, etc.
The FR header is then put back on once it reached the opposite FR switch.
They police your speed with CAR.

We do it all over in our LSS service, (LAN Switching Service).  Though
we no longer use 4700's, dead product, it works fine and these things
were bridging.  Only time we had a very strange problem that has never
been resolved was a customer connect about 6 sites thru this fully
meshed service with a completely flat 5000 node network!!  Finally
convinced them to put routers on the inside of these 4700 bridges.

  If it's only for a lab then certainly go ahead.

advice on CCNP exams [7:26850]

For all those people who are starting CCNP, I have some advice for you. Dont
be discouraged by all the people telling you they got a 990 on every exam.
That was then, and this is now. I new price of 125 (Nov 11th) for test
indicates that things have changed very much. I say this because Cisco
states the 125 is for the cost of changing the exams. I have just heard from
friends that took it and that alot of their friends are failing. I have
failed CCNP Routing as well just recently.

The number of CCNPs has increased this year, by 100% since the following
year, I think that trend is coming to a screaching halt.

How to study, it should be common sense, which i dont have much of :) Print
out the study guideline from Cisco, and know everything they mention
forwards and backwards. Obviously OSPF, BGP. If you have any study guides,
dont really put much stock in them there not worth 2c anymore.  I suggest
exam cram for a basic idea of what its about, and cisco press to look up the
things that are hard to understand. And maybe sybex if you want to read the
entire book :) I think some of the questions on Boson go overboard, but that
might be what you need. I guess it cant hurt to know too much. Boson is now
only good for learning what type of questions are on the exam, not THE
actual questions on the exam anymore.

What IOS to choose? [7:26852]

Hi All

I'm looking at upgrading the IOS for a couple of 7204 routers so that they
can support SSH, I'm after a bit of info' on a good method of selecting the
IOS to upgrade to.
I've searched the CCO and found that I need an IPSec version, say the
Enterprise IPsec with 3Des, I then get a list of IOS to choose from, easy
enough. I would like the most stable IOS possible for our situation, so I
picked out an IOS 12.1(5)T9, I choose this on the basis of memory
requirements alone and the presumption that the earlier versions (T - T8)
may have had more bugs. I've then done a search on the bug tool to check for
known bugs, and I didn't get any with this specific version. Can anyone else
help me with the selection of the IOS, like what else to search for or check
before deploying it

Your choice is as good as any. Not being sarcastic, but I have been
through the ringer with IOS and Cisco for the last 6 months.
Specifically with 7200's and 7500's. TAC will not provide you with Code
recommendation unless you are experiencing issues with code. 

In regards to your selection, I would say that you are probably in a
safe place. I am actually performing an upgrade this afternoon to
12.1(5)T7. This version is said to be stable as it resolves a NAT issue
I am dealing with. I have also been told that 12.2 code has issues as
well. So  Hope your upgrade goes well. I have to say that I am sorely
dissappointed with the declining quality of Cisco IOS and Hardware
alike.

I started taking the CCNP exams under the 1.0 versions. I took the CLSC
(Switching), CMTD (RAS) and failed the ACRC (Routing) exams, then the
switch happened. I then took the Routing exam, and the old ACRC made the
routing exam I took look like a walk in the park. After that, the
Support exam  wasn't challenging at all. It wouldn't surprise me if
Cisco decided to increase the difficulty on those exams.

ACL's on a VLAN [7:26858]

I'd like to use ACL's on a 2948 G-L3 switch. Cisco states that you cannot
put extended access lists on physical interfaces, see below. I need the
access list security. Do extended access lists work on logical VLAN
interfaces?

In release 12.0(7)W5(15d), the Catalyst 2948G-L3 does not support:
  a.. Data-plane (security) access-control lists (ACLs) on any interfaces
(in other words, user data traffic cannot be restricted using input or
output access lists on the router interfaces)

In Cisco's network model they say access lists should be used at the
disrtibution layer only and they classify the 2948 G-L3 as a distribution
layer switch/router. How could they then not support ACL's on this $10K
switch/router. To say the least i'm very frustrated.

I've never been a fan of the Exam Crams used as the core of my studying.
To their credit though, they're short and sweet. A day or two before I
take an exam sometimes I'll burn through an examcram book, and if I read
something that I couldn't add three or four more sentences to, then I
know that's a topic I still need work on. I have the RS exam cram, and
there's nothing wrong with it, I just prefer to use other books for my
actual studying.

I thought about that after I took the exam, but there was something else
I noticed when taking the boson tests. Try taking one of the more
popular CCIE prep books, or maybe even the CCIE Professional Development
books, and go through a section. (Not a chapter, but one section of a
chapter). Then, try to think of 5 questions you could ask someone that
would test their comprehension of that section. I'm willing to bet that
4 of those 5 questions you thought of will show up, worded slightly
differently, on the boson tests, and 1 or 2 of those 5 questions are in
the test bank for the written.

 agree with other posters: there are several errors in the book,

 would come up in my cross-referencing, and partially out of 
 laziness =)
 I consider the Lammle/Swartz book a worthy investment though; a month
 ago I had practically 0 experience or knowledge of reading and
 interpretting RIF's or working with multicast protocols. One 
 of the down
 sides of some of the more detailed books out there is that 
 they contain
 so much information that a subject you know nothing about can be
 intimidating. For example, I THOUGHT I knew ethernet until I read the
 ethernet chapter in Giles' book. Reading a book like his to 
 learn about
 something you know little about is painful at best, and fruitless at
 worst. The Sybex book does an excellent job of explaining 
 the underlying
 concepts in english, giving you a foundation to build on.
 
 I also bought one of the Boson CCIE tests yesterday and went 
 through it
 for a few hours before I took the test. Let me say, that was 
 the second
 best $40 dollars I've spent on this test. (The best $40 was 
 the bar tab
 I racked up last night) The questions in the Boson test were very
 challenging, many of them more challenging than the Written. 
 I'm pretty
 sure, I wouldn't have passed without it.
 
 I had one other resource backing me up, I teach the Cisco Networking
 Academy classes. Believe it or not, knowing the CCNA netacad 
 curriculum
 forwards and backwards contributed greatly to my success on the exam.
 
 Anyways, enough babbling... after taking a short break I 
 need to start
 getting ready for the lab. I don't post much on here (usually because
 the few questions I'm qualified to answer, get answered six 
 times before
 I can hit the Reply button), but I want to thank everyone on

If you're good at something - a test may seem easy. On the other hand, if
you're not good at something - a test may seem very tough.

The point is, the exams are no harder than you make them, and if everything
makes sense to you and you have a good logical way of thinking - the CCIE
lab could seem like a walk in the park to you.

Also, you should be careful how you talk about books. Some books might not
work for you, but could be excellent for other. A good example is when you
read the reviews on amazon - you can find one person writing that the books
was perfect, and he passed the exam reading only that book, while another
person who failed the exam is sending the book straight to hell.

In regards to the Boson tests. They gives you a good fine tuning to prepare
for the exam, but as far as I know has never given you the exact same
questions as on the real one - that would be an open invitation to a big
lawsuit from Cisco.

If anyone has a link to an official comment/article from Cisco regarding the
change of their tests to harder ones, please send that to the list.

Any time I use the default keyword, the daemon refuses to load giving an
expected string error.

It's good practice, though.  I've almost locked myself out of the switch. 
As long as I'm too lazy to cycle the power, I'll hack at it until I get it
right.  :-)

True, the written exam is tough, but really all about understanding rif and
dlsw technologies.  From there it comes down to memorizing the questions and
taking the test a few times.  I know guys that took that thing over 8 times
in a row, just to pass it.  I just got lucky and happened to pass it on the
first time.  Been a few months, and still have not scheduled the daunting
lab though.

Did you ever think that some people on amazon are mixing the reviews just to
throw people off, and slow them down from getting certified? On the flip
note, It could be the authors friends posting good stuff about the books. I
guess you could call this Job security either way. So in my posting I just
really say use multiple books. I think that is a good idea.

The boson exam Idea, someone else posted here. It said that the CCIE boson
had alot of the same questions, and why was it legal to do that.

No matter what, test are just paper. You have to know the true matieral, and
how things work to be gainfully employed and successful. And everyone must
recertify CCNP every 2 years, and I think thats a good idea on Ciscos part.

logic alone will not get you very far.

I am not saying that is my 2 cents, because i dont like that saying :)

My question is about support of sna FRBAN feature on a Cisco CIP router
directly connected to frame-relay network and specially when we use a FRAD
RFC 1490 COMPLIANT ON ANOTHER SITE and not a Cisco router.

PPP Multilink - Virtual Interface [7:26877]

Hey all.  I came across something and I can't find a good answer anywhere. 
So here goes.

There is a 7500 router with multiple T1s that go to many remote sites.  Some
of these remote sites use multiple T1 lines.  These are configured with PPP
Multilink and Virtual Templates.

I know that when configuring MLP without Virtual Templates, you can specify
a multilink group (bundle).  However, we aren't specifying a bundle or group
number on our serial interfaces.  We simply have them using MLP and then a
multilink virtual-template 1 command.

Here's my question.  How does the router (the Virtual Template) know which
line to put in which bundle?  Does it use a neighbor-type relationship to
determine which links need to be part of which bundles?

So again, how did the Virtual-Template know to group S5/0/0 and S5/0/1 into
a bundle?

A secondary question:  What's the advantage(s) to using Virtual-Templates
over simply configuring the MLP bundles directly?

If anyone has a good link or document about how Cisco implements MLP with
and without Virutal-Templates, let me know.  Aside from straight here's how
to configure documents, I can't find any good info.

You really missed a precious thing that could have saved your life It is the 
Cisco press book. You do not need anything keen,troytec,sybex etc...if you 
have this book in hand. The book is written by Catherine Paquest., follow 
the book each and evey line. You would find answers to alomost all of 
questions you went wrong at the exam. YES the exam has been compliled from 
these books, practise with the review questions at the end of each chapter, 
they are the 'real' ones.

I took the routing 503 exam, I guess I was not prepared enough because i
failed. I did study, but obviously not enough. Also, just as a precaution, 
i
used some study guides. Not only did I just use the guides, I looked up the
meaning behind them in my books, so i would understand it. The only advice 
I
have is not to use study guides because they do not work. I read exam cram,
and syngress, but obviously not enough. I looked some friends guides
Crambible, Keen, Troytech 503, Coolcram, and AF Bigstep. I was really using
these guides to find out what kind of questions were on the exam, then to
look them up. I needed a 690, and i got a 650. Well I guess this will only
help me learn the subject better.

More advice on taking an exam, give youself plent of time before you
schedule it. I gave myself 2 days, and one of those days something happened
where i could not study. Also i got in a traffic jam, and a bad day at 
work.
By the time I was ready to take the exam, my mind was somewhere else and i
was kinda shaken from the bad day. My testing center is open weekends, i
dont know why I didnt take it on a Sunday or something.

Oh well, I took 125$ lesson. I guess I will just know the subject really
well next time I take the test, because I am going to be 100% sure of 
myself
next time I spend the money. Please be gentle in your return post :) I feel
bad enought :(

Tcp window size question [7:26861]

Hi
I used a sniffer to monitor my network traffic. I
found even if the tcp window size is very big (around
32000), my ftp session is still getting one ack after
every two pakets sent.

So who is deciding how frequent the ack will be sent?

I thought it should be decided by the TCP window size.
Please correct me.

defined as the the one used for configuring the modems from the router. You 
open the telnet session with the modem-connected right from the router. You

I don't know as this is the first I've heard of the 2948G-L3 switches. 
However, I did read this:

The Catalyst 2948G-L3 has the ability to prevent security breaches via the
use of both IP and IPX access lists. This is useful in preventing users from
accessing certain applications or services. The Catalyst 2948G-L3 supports
both inbound and outbound access lists on its two Gigabit Ethernet
interfaces. These access lists can be defined similar to any Cisco IOS
router as standard IPX access lists as well as standard and extended
IP-based access lists.

This tells me that it supports Standard IP/IPX ACL and Extended IP ACL but
only on it's two Gig interfaces.  Now, if you have multiple VLANs, and use
the Gig links as trunks, I don't know if using ACLs is still an option,

KB and kb are different. Usually network links are measured in kilo bits per
second. KB is Kilo Bytes per second. To convert Bytes to Bits you need to
times Bytes by 8 bits. 

So, 75KB times 8 = 600kilobits / sec.

To convert kilobits to megabits you need to divide by 1024. 

So, 600kilobits / 1024 = .58megbits / sec

I would say your best bet would be to scour Cisco's website on each part and
see the differences.  For instance, there are some functions that a
MSFC2/PFC2 can do that an MSFC1/PFC1 can't do.  (AFAIK) you HAVE to have a
Sup 2 to support a MSFC2/PFC2, but you can run an MSFC1/PFC2 on either a
Sup1 or Sup2.  If you look on Cisco's website for Supervisor IOS you'll
find information about the Native IOS (Native IOS = Supervisor IOS).  Hybrid
is where the switch side of the box runs a CatOS and the router part (the
MSFC1/2) runs an IOS.  Under Native (or Supervisor) IOS, the IOS controls
the whole box.  So basically with Native IOS, every switchport can act as a
separate router interface, so it's like having a router with 200+ ethernet
interfaces =).

I know that's not what you want to hear, but digging on Cisco's website is
about the best way to figure out all of those details.

My logic has always been, if someone can afford to take any cert exam 8
times, and doesn't mind losing the money, then odds are they're
financially well-off enough that they can just retire now and get it
over with.

Now that the written costs $300 US, taking the written 8 times would
cost $2400, and taking the lab eight times would cost over 9 grand.
That's a lot of beer money to go donating to Cisco...

It's easy to see what's happening here. All of Boson's tests are done by
different authors. Each author is going to try like hell to get their
questions as close as possible to the questions on the actual exams, if not
right from the exams. Boson doesn't care because they state right in their
author contract that they are not responsible for exams that contain
questions that break the NDA. The author will be held responsible. It's not
like Boson's going to double-check every authored exam for NDA violations.
Anyway, the closer the author comes to the actual exam questions, the more
exams he'll sell when word gets around that, for example, Boson Test #2 is
the one you need to get. However, Boson isn't doing anything different than
any other company selling certification practice exams. It's a ridiculously
huge, cut-throat, and competitive market out there for study materials.

I thought about that after I took the exam, but there was something else I
noticed when taking the boson tests. Try taking one of the more popular CCIE
prep books, or maybe even the CCIE Professional Development books, and go
through a section. (Not a chapter, but one section of a chapter). Then, try
to think of 5 questions you could ask someone that would test their
comprehension of that section. I'm willing to bet that 4 of those 5
questions you thought of will show up, worded slightly differently, on the
boson tests, and 1 or 2 of those 5 questions are in the test bank for the
written.

You are probably right about the reviews, which is why I mostly go for books
with more than 10 different ones - and better if even more.

I also agree with you about multiple books - I have done that with all my
exams except the BCRAN, because that book was just perfect (in my eyes).

However, I have seen people who just get it right away. I mean, you can show
them the worst book, and they will understand the entire thing right away,
and go up and score 1000.

Me, on the other hand, unless it's a really good book (again - for me that
is) do not always get it right away, and must re-read it in the same and/or
other books, and then after still not getting it when answering wrong on a
boson test, finally figure it out.

What I was trying to say was, that I think you should be careful posting to
a list that some books just don't work for the exam(s), because there are
always many new members, and some of them might never buy one of those books
you talk badly about, and that would not be fair to the writers nor to the
publishers, because those books are probably pretty good in other peoples
eyes.

Anyway, this is still my 2 cents, and I like to say that :-)

Did you ever think that some people on amazon are mixing the reviews just to
throw people off, and slow them down from getting certified? On the flip
note, It could be the authors friends posting good stuff about the books. I
guess you could call this Job security either way. So in my posting I just
really say use multiple books. I think that is a good idea.

The boson exam Idea, someone else posted here. It said that the CCIE boson
had alot of the same questions, and why was it legal to do that.

No matter what, test are just paper. You have to know the true matieral, and
how things work to be gainfully employed and successful. And everyone must
recertify CCNP every 2 years, and I think thats a good idea on Ciscos part.

logic alone will not get you very far.

I am not saying that is my 2 cents, because i dont like that saying :)

Interesting observation. I don't think Cisco would even care if a
company was putting out test questions that matched the exam... after
all, if less qualified people try and fail at the lab, that's just easy
money for them anyway.

 to think of 5 questions you could ask someone that would test their
 comprehension of that section. I'm willing to bet that 4 of those 5
 questions you thought of will show up, worded slightly 
 differently, on the
 boson tests, and 1 or 2 of those 5 questions are in the test 
 bank for the
 written.

1/2000  since then, i've attempted the lab 4x...i'm going to attempt the
lab as many times as i can before the written recertification (in 1/2003),
after that, sad to say but i'm planning to give up...it just ain't worth it

My logic has always been, if someone can afford to take any cert exam 8
times, and doesn't mind losing the money, then odds are they're
financially well-off enough that they can just retire now and get it
over with.

Now that the written costs $300 US, taking the written 8 times would
cost $2400, and taking the lab eight times would cost over 9 grand.
That's a lot of beer money to go donating to Cisco...

I think the class is $3995 for the week. Not bad if work's paying.  Here's
some confirmation info from computer data.

Prereq:  A good understanding of the operation and configuration of Interior
Routing Protocols especially EIGRP and OSPF.

Been there, done that...not any fun.  Brokerage environment; UDP
directed-broadcast traffic to nearly 200 sites.  Buffers tuned to the max to
keep from dropping packets because the application didn't handle
re-transmissions...etc., etc.,  Of course, priority queuing was required to
ensure that web browsing wasn't stepping on the mission-critical app.
RSP4's in the 7500's were running into the 90% range on a regular
basis...couldn't talk the client into spending the $$ to re-design the
network; they couldn't understand why the users were complaining about poor
network performance.  They figured that if the processors were running near
100% that they were getting their $$ out of the infrastructure investment -
I still have bad dreams about it :)  - working for a new client now... :)

From personal experience I'd put that figure at 3% too high :-)
In the dim dark past we were running some 7500s with badly overloaded RSPs.
They would run with no discernible problems up to 97% or 98% CPU.  Then
late morning the traffic load would build up, and output queues on some of
the ports would eventually overrun, and DLSW circuits would start to
bounce, and the network would go into meltdown very spectacularly.
For various reasons it took us a while to get hold of upgraded RSPs, so
peak hour wasn't a lot of fun for us or the network users...

YMMV.  I do *not* recommend running at 97% CPU on a production network.

you can't run at 60-70%, leaving enough room for burst in CPU activity
so that you never hit 101%.

Verify that the router can reach the TACACS server (ping) and verify that
the TACACS server and router are configured with matching parameters.  Note:
you may have to restart the TACACS server process when you add a router.

I'm assuming that you copy/pasted the same set of config lines in all of the
routers; you might want to verify that all of the lines made it into the
config properly.  If you created your script on a 12.1 router it may have
problems getting entered into a 12.0 router, for example.

Hope this helps.

 I have configured a number of routers to authenticate to the TACACS+
 server we have on site.  some routers get the login prompt and some dont
 and at time others do.

 Has anyone got any ideas to this.

What port for Win2K VPN [7:26897]

I like to run Win2K VPN server behind the cisco PIX 520 firewall and
wonderig what port would I need to open on PIX so it sends all vpn
requests to Win2K box running behind the PIX or on SSN.

Just did one to see and they are just as easy as always.  Nothing changed
yet.

Off topic:

Is it just me and my superstitions, or does any one else feel that the
survey before each test on how many certs you have, experience you have,
etc., changes the difficulty on the test based on how well you say you know
the stuff, number of yearsd in, etc,.?  Also, what would happen if you said
no the the NDA before the test?  Does it boot you off and send you home $125
poorer?

 things that are hard to understand. And maybe sybex if you want to read

 entire book :) I think some of the questions on Boson go overboard, but
that
 might be what you need. I guess it cant hurt to know too much. Boson is
now
 only good for learning what type of questions are on the exam, not THE
 actual questions on the exam anymore.

I said these books are my suggestion I didnt say use ONLY these books. I
am just a guy on the internet. Im sure people dont take my emails as the
final word on CCNP. Just curtious so I know when I take it, what did you use
for BCRAN? CCNP Cisco? I have that book already if it is. But havnt got that
far yet.

I just bought the Cisco CCNP training kit (released in OCT 2001) from BN. it

Hi all,

I have been going thru the book - Cisco BGP 4 - command and
configuration handbook from William Parkhurst and personally feel that
book is very good - explaining each and every command options and
examples for that.

It is useful for me to practice each and every command for my exam.  At
the same time, I am also thinking whether is there any other book
similar to this for other protocols like OSPF, EIGRP, IGRP/RIP.  Of
course I wonder, why Parkhurst himself hasn't written similar books and
just only for BGP.

Have anybody come across a similar guide for these other protocols as
well.

O.k.  I sat the exam last week and failed but by not a lot.  Silly
mistakes killed me.  For those of you who have still to experience the
one day lab then please read ahead.

Mostly everyone on this list stated that there was no time to do the lab
or check anything.  I found this to be so untrue it was unreal.  Most
people on the lab finished with an hour to go and I had more time than
this to check and try to get the annoying things that didn't work to
work (although I failed to get two things working)... So from that, my
advice is if you are stuck on something, move on and work your way
through the workbook.  Once you get to the end you should have plenty
time to fix (if you can) the problems you left.

From my experience of Brussels everything was there.  The proctors
turned up when they should, answered any questions you asked, there were
icons for each element you had to configure, there was paper, there were
pens, pencils, sharpeners and erasers.  Lunch was horrible although I
don't think anyone was to bothered about lunch, so if you are a person
who cannot go without lunch bring a packed lunch with you (just don't
put your answers in your lunch box !!).

All in all enjoy the experience and READ the questions (even the
smallest detail).  I am resetting in Feb next year and I reckon the
pressure will really be on then.  Most people fail 1st time anyway is
what I can say this time but next time ??

The best way to troubleshoot the problem would be to enable debugging on the
Tacacs server, The following commands assume you have a Unix Tacacs server
and you will need root access. 
The first file you need to edit is the  $BASEDIR/config/CSU.cfg file. You
will need to change the following lines
NUMBER config_system_logging_level = 0x80;  ( sets the debug to local 0
facility )
NUMBER config_logging_configuration = 0x0fff;  ( sets the debugging
verbose level )

You will then need to modify the /etc/syslog.conf file by adding the
following line
local0.debug/var/log/csuslog

The file csuslog must be created in the /var/log directory, in fact you can
direct the output to any file in any directory as long as you put the full
path in the syslog.conf file.

You will then need to stop and start CiscoSecure and also restart the syslog
daemon

Then log into the routers and go back and view the log file ( csuslog in
this case )

The most likely issue that you will have is that the secret keys are
incorrect.

Verify that the router can reach the TACACS server (ping) and verify that

I'm assuming that you copy/pasted the same set of config lines in all of the
routers; you might want to verify that all of the lines made it into the
config properly.  If you created your script on a 12.1 router it may have
problems getting entered into a 12.0 router, for example.

 and at time others do.

VoIP Guy has brought up a very good question. I wouldn't think the questions
in the beginning asking for background information and so forth would affect
the difficulty of test. Why would they ask you this information every time?
But I think it affects the difficulty of the test. Call me crazy, but I have
answered the questions sometimes falsely, to see if I get easier or harder
questions and I haven't come to a conclusion. I hope it doesn't affect it,
but weirder things happen.

I like to say that is my 0010 cents. =)

As far as I know, you can't just put a gender-changer device on a TR
interface and the other end of it be a Ethernet directly into a Ethernet
Concentrator.

What you would have to do is have a TR Blade in a Modular switch primarily
working with Ethernet, or vise-versa.
Then you have to have the correct OS on the Switch, and configure Bridging
between the TR and Ethernet networks within the OS Configuration.
Do-able, but much more complicated.

Huh?  How is the ethernet interface on a router going to deal with token
ring frames?  Would it pass the token correctly?  I don't think using a
converter on a token ring connector and plugging into an ethernet
interface on a router will work at all.

I must share your superstition. I always filled out the survey as if I was
doing a career change and didn't know squat about networking even though
I've got numerous certs and have hands-on experience. I've heard that the
grading of an exam is somewhat based on your answers to this survey. So, I
don't think that the questions would be more difficult, just possibly the
grading. Whether it's true or why they would do this, I don't know. It's
just an interesting bit of information I heard about and decided that it's
better to be safe than sorry!

I always say I am changing careers, never seen a router, have no certs, etc.
Some people have told me they swear that if you say you are the man on that
survey, they really make the test harder.  I'm afraid to find out myself :)

On the PIX, you need to open port tcp 1723 and GRE 47, assuming that you
are using Microsoft PPTP buggy stuff.

 For all those people who are starting CCNP, I have some advice for you.
Dont
 be discouraged by all the people telling you they got a 990 on every exam.
 That was then, and this is now. I new price of 125 (Nov 11th) for test
 indicates that things have changed very much. I say this because Cisco
 states the 125 is for the cost of changing the exams. I have just heard
from
 friends that took it and that alot of their friends are failing. I have
 failed CCNP Routing as well just recently.

 The number of CCNPs has increased this year, by 100% since the following
 year, I think that trend is coming to a screaching halt.

 How to study, it should be common sense, which i dont have much of :)
Print
 out the study guideline from Cisco, and know everything they mention
 forwards and backwards. Obviously OSPF, BGP. If you have any study guides,
 dont really put much stock in them there not worth 2c anymore.  I suggest
 exam cram for a basic idea of what its about, and cisco press to look up
the
 things that are hard to understand. And maybe sybex if you want to read
the
 entire book :) I think some of the questions on Boson go overboard, but
that
 might be what you need. I guess it cant hurt to know too much. Boson is
now
 only good for learning what type of questions are on the exam, not THE
 actual questions on the exam anymore.

Which path to take? [7:26918]

Hello, looking for some career pathing advice. I am currently pursuing CCNP
but looking to specialize. It seems to me that the two hot paths right now
are VoIP/AVVID and Security/SAFE.

To get blunt, which one of these specializations is going to be more in
demand/pay more in the long run? I like both technologies, but what really
brings this post is a price list I saw recently from a VAR in Kansas City.
They were charging around $150 for security stuff, but for phone stuff it
was $225 and up. 

I like both technologies, but am not sure which is going to be the better
road to take. Would appreciate any input on this matter.
