2002-09-03 Thread John Brandis

Hi All,

I am building a new LAN, and I wish to use 802.10 as the encaps type for my
VTP domain.

I am also, getting some NEC IP Telephones. Does any know, if I can use the
802.10 to trunk to the phone ? Or do you need to use .1q ?

Thanks all,

RE: Which PIX to buy [7:52572]

2002-09-03 Thread William Pearch

Although I can't help with the leasing issue...

If you really need speed and you are using the 6500's take a look at the
new firewall blade. List is $43K a pop, but wow, talk about throughput
(5 Gigs is the spec sheet.)
Runs PIX OS, supports everything, yada, yada, yada, ymmv, vwpbl... Ok,
so it's overkill for the proffered OC3 issue, but very, very cool and
may fit in to what you want to do. I'll take two...

I'm wondering which PIX I need. I need something that will work with
OC12
155Mbps when saturated. Right now we have a T3 line and will eventually

get an OC3. I would need redundant PIXs. Can anyone recommend a
company
that leases them?

Thank you.

RE: Router IOS Upgrade bug in 12.1 images [7:52489]

2002-09-03 Thread Claudia Walter

Hi Marc,

this is likely to be IOS bug CSCdv65027/CSCds28168.

Description:
The command-line interface (CLI) does not prompt for the
erase keyword when the copy [/erase] source-url destination-url EXEC
command is entered. This behaviour does not allow a file system to be erased
using the copy [/erase] source-url destination-url EXEC command.

Workaround: Enter the erase filesystem: command before
entering the copy EXEC command.

Hope that helps ;-)

I've done this before, and it's not like it's real tough, but.

I am trying to upgrade my IOS images. Neither the Router Software Loader,
not the good old copy tftp: flash: is working.

RSL gives me some odd message

the copy function never asks if I want to erase the current image on the
flash - it just starts to copy, then stops, with a message that there is
not
enough rook on the destination device.

 sample output of my process:

 Router_7#copy tftp flash:

This process will accept the copy options and then terminate
the current system image to use the ROM based image for the copy.
Routing functionality will not be available during that time.
If you are logged in via telnet, this connection will terminate.
Users with console access can see the results of the copy operation.

As you can see - no asking to erase. I suspect this is a problem with the

different image. Unfortunately, just about all my routers have this
 identical image in place.

Anyone seen this? got a fix?

Make sure that you carefully figure out the correct side of the
connection.
ICQ server runs on port 4000, and the client chooses a random
high-numbered
port. That means you will see UDP packets FROM (inbound/source) port
4000
going to the random port. In other words, don't go looking in a port
database trying to figure what that random, high-numbered port means.
The
significant port is the source.

ICQ now has a web based version also, just go the web put in your ID and
your on. Now being devils advocate I am aware of the trojans and viruses
that get spread on ICQ, but if it is not interferring with work progress
then why such the hassle. It seems as if your burning more cycles trying
to block it when it almost seems to me that this is a loosing battle.
The only recourse I think you have is to go to HR with your security
plan have them put this in your computer ussage policy for work and then
brief everyone of the employees why this is a no no. I have sniffed the
web version with sniffer pro and it looks to me it strictly uses port
80.

But just by blocking it and I do not know if you are notifying anyone or
if this is in your security poilicy it just seems like you're a loose
renegade on the network to implement your own security policy which will
tick people off. I think if you take my approach above and people
understand why your are doing it then it is less likely to turn
whirlwinds into a hurricane of upset users especially if it was allowed
in the past.

NO BASHING please :) you may have took these steps already then if so
the only thing to do is report them to HR especially if it is causing
problems for you on the network and putting business assets at risk.

I may be off my rocker, but I think it's possible that you could set up
an IDS system that blocks access to any IP on the outside that sends
packets to your network that look like ICQ. At the very least it could
record the addresses for future inclusion into ACLs.

This won't block the people who set up SSH tunnelling as described in
other messages, but you can make it a violation of security policy to
use that kind of back door.

Thanks,
Shawn

I failed in QOS exam a few days back coz there is no specific book and as
well paper is new and no one around has taken it. So no idea about it at
all...I have already passed IP Telephony CVOICE exams but facing
difficulty only with QOS eaxm. If some one has taken this exam and would
like to give some comments then it would be great help.

CL: I feel your pain, after my frustrating experience with CIPT. I'll be
taking the DQoS class here in a week or two. I'm also just about finished
with the 12.1 QoS configuration guide downloaded from CCO, plus some other
materials from various places. I'll let you know if anything good comes up
from my experiences.

 Thanks in Advance!

Re: flash PCMCIA [7:52604]

2002-09-03 Thread YASSER ALY

You should be able to do this from the router itself.

However, if the PCMCIA is not recognized on the router you need to format
it on a machine that supports BSD as BSD file system and the one used
with the router are compatible. If by any chance you have access to MAC
OS you will be able to do it as it supports BSD.

I haven't find a driver for windows that can do this. If you reached one
I would be glad to have a copy from.

Regards,

Yasser

I need a driver to install the PCMCIA flash or disk of Cisco 7200 router
on the labtop to delete or copy files (images to it) any ideas?

According to the Cisco website, they don't publish passing scores anymore.
They state:
Cisco does not publish exam passing scores because exam questions and
passing scores are subject to change without notice.
So, even if someone gave you their passing score, yours may not be the same.

VLan encap. over WAN [7:52613]

2002-09-03 Thread Arni V. Skarphedinsson

I have the following problem,

I have two locations connected bya ATM from a service provide, and I get
ethernet at each end, now I would like to send Vlan tagged frames 802.1q
over the link, as I need to have two IP networks span both sites.

But when I turn tagging on, It does not work, and the Provider says that his
equipment canĀ“t handle the tagged frames

Is there any way to work around this, with routing or switching ??

please let me know

Best regards

Multiple Helper-addresses on same interface [7:52616]

2002-09-03 Thread Quezada, Jose L

Hello all,

Can anyone enlighten me on the behavior of having multiple ip
helper-address statements on the same interface? We are setting up a DHCP
solution where we will have two DHCP servers and the Cisco router serving as
the relay agent. If I have two ip helper-address statements on the Ethernet
interface of the router, each one pointing to a different DHCP server, will
the router send the unicast message to each server?? Or will it randomly
send it to one or the other? Or if one server is not available, the router
will send the unicast message to the server that is available? What does the
router do with multiple ip helper-address statements? Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks.

Yes routing will solve the problem. Also the Cisco, or formerly Cisco
8110 supports a larger enet packet size. The problem with the tagged
frames is that they look like giants, 1518 bytes.

Re: AGAIN... aCS2.6 on W2k advanced server with bug!!!! [7:52621]

2002-09-03 Thread Shawn Heisey

Magdy,

You did not make it clear what kind of device you are using. If you are
using a PIX or other device with missing or braindead accounting, the
max-sessions feature will not work as expected. Aironet is another
device that is broken. If the device is non-cisco, it probably does not
send accounting in the way that ACS expects.

ACS uses accounting records to count sessions, and if those records are
not perfect, the feature will break. Here's a URL that talks about
what's needed for the logged-in user report, which is tied in with
max-sessions:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/480/csntfaq.html#Q28

The PIX can do accounting, but because there's no good way to track when
a user stops using the internet, its accounting is useless to ACS as far
as session tracking.

Thanks,
Shawn

Resolved: Router IOS Upgrade bug in 12.1 images [7:52489]

2002-09-03 Thread Chuck's Long Road

yes indeed this is a bug. corrected in versions later, although it worked in
a previous IOS version that was on my routers that supposedly contained this
particular bug, so I question the accuracy of CCO in this regard.

The resolution:

1) set the config register to 0x2101 and reload so that the system comes up
in boot mode ( config-register 0x2101 )
Router_3(boot)#

the copy tftp flash command works as it should from this mode

2) after successful copy, change the config register back to 0x2102 and
reload.

3) life is good.

during the course of this I discovered a number of interesting things, that
might become the topic of a homily, one of these days.

 Hi Marc,

this is likely to be IOS bug CSCdv65027/CSCds28168.

 Description:
The command-line interface (CLI) does not prompt for the
erase keyword when the copy [/erase] source-url destination-url EXEC
command is entered. This behaviour does not allow a file system to be
erased
using the copy [/erase] source-url destination-url EXEC command.

Workaround: Enter the erase filesystem: command before
 entering the copy EXEC command.

 Hope that helps ;-)

I am using Router Sim for my CCNP studies. The Simulator from Sybex is
exactly the same as the one from Router Sim. The reason one will see a
difference in their prices is because Router Sim will give you upgrades. I
had this confirmed from their sales rep (six months ago)

Thoughts?

I was able to complete all my routing lab exercises on the simulator but the
commands covered in the book or the exam are much more. Many commands that I
wanted to try and practice were not there. I guess I got what I paid for.

Re: BSCI - are boson.com exams good? [7:52574]

2002-09-03 Thread Lars Bucher

Hi Neal

I completed my CCIP a month ago with the BSCI-exam. IMHO the BSCI was much
easier than all the other CCIP exams and even the BSCN. Compared to the BSCN
there's just some additional IS-IS. Further, this exam didn't go much into
deep. To prepare, I used the CCNP preparation guide (cisco press) and read
the IS-IS chapter in the Jeff Doyle book. As there were just
'surface'-questions, I was prepared more than enough! I would say, the
BSCI-Bosons were much more difficult than the exam itself. As I said:
Peanuts compared to MPLS or QoS and MCAST, where you really need to know
your stuff.

Hope this helps.

Cheers and good luck

Lars

Can someone who has passed the BSCI comment on this? I've studied less

upgrade DRAM memory on 2600 [7:52632]

2002-09-03 Thread Tom Scott

Hardware Enthusiasts,

We want to upgrade DRAM (volatile) from 32 MB to 64 MB on our
2600 router (I think it's a 2621).

The existing DRAM chip (clip? or whatever it's called) has this
written on it:

69000178 - C01 - CSC
8MX32 EDO DIMM
0031P0245

Something like that. To order the memory we need a part number
that begins with MEM. If anyone has a suggestion, please post.

The current required score is an 849 out of possible 1000 points.

Of course they give you the first 300 points for just showing up for the
test.

Best of Luck on the test. It has gotten harder with the new simulations now
added to the test. Get some practice on a router or two before attempting
the actual test.

The first question to ask yourself is if the current 32 mbs of dram is a
single 32 dram simm or 2 - 16 mb dram simms?

Then go to www.crucial.com for the 32 mb dram simm or simm(s) that you need
depending upon your current router configuration.

I just order 12 more on Sunday at a cost of $18.91 a piece plus free second
day shipping.

RE: What's next after CCNP AND CCDP [7:52611]

2002-09-03 Thread Heffner Christopher

It depends upon your background I would say.

Do you have any background or interest in the security side of things.

If you do then the CSS1 is just for more courses and/or tests and probably
could be completed in about 6 months or less.

Understand that all the CSS1 tests are about to change in the next 6 to 8
weeks.

You seem to have the knowledge and drive to pass the CCNP and CCDP which is
great so continuing on to the CCIE Routing and Switching could also be the
next logical step.

I would start with studying for the CCIE Routing and Switching Written
test. That should take you about 4 to 6 weeks of gooding reading of such
books like the Cisco Press Internetworking Technlogies Handbook which most
chapters can be found on Cisco website also.

Try the written test first and then see what you think.

You can always go back to the security stuff later.

Understand the CCIE Routing and Switch Lab test is another big challenge and
will demand a lot of time and commitment on your part. Most folks spend at
least a year or close to two years getting ready for the lab exam and take
it 3 or 4 times just to pass. You need lots of studying, reading and lots
and lots and lots of practice on real Cisco gear.

Either way get signed up for the other groupstudy lists once you have
decided.

Best of luck in your new challenges.

OT: What exactly is GRIP..! [7:52640]

2002-09-03 Thread Nigel Taylor

All,
I've been trying to obtain a greater understanding of cisco's newest
protocol enhancements technologies/mechanism - GRIP.

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/732/Tech/grip/learn.shtml

It seems very interesting but seems to address some of the same issues
already
identified by the IETF and the various working groups. Mainly what caught my
attention is the technologies claim to provide faster convergence times for
the Border Gateway Protocol(BGP). Here's a link to the pdf document that
discusses a bit but really only makes note of the users(admins)
responsibility
to use existing IOS mechanisms to speed up convergence.

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/732/Tech/grip/docs/qa.pdf

Based on my past reading of rfc's like 2918, 2439, and drafts like the
Graceful Restart Mechanism, I couldn't find anything that identifies what
GRIP implements to assist in convergence times. Has anyone looked at this
or
heard anything from the cisco camp on exactly what it does from the BGP
standpoint.

thanks
Nigel

RE: CSIDS ???????? [7:52630]

2002-09-03 Thread Christopher M. Heffner

I doubt anybody has the exact dates yet not until they finish grading all
300 betas test for each exam which means 1200 betas test. Then they have to
update and make corrections to the questions on the beta exam before going
live.

There is a email address up under the training page for Cisco for people to
ask questions but you probably won't get a straight answer yet.

Sorry.

Base on what you are saying, I should be able to buy the Cisco Secure
Intrusion Detection System book(Published Octber 10, 2001...isbn 158705034x)
and be able to prepare myself for the 9E0-558 CSIDS test. The reason of my

want to wait until a new book is released.

RE: What's next after CCNP AND CCDP [7:52611]

2002-09-03 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

True, or the other way around. The knowledge gained by the Security
specialization may help with the CCIE lab. The reason I say this is because
the RS CCIE Written 350-001 pre-qualification exam blueprint shows
Security as a topic you must understand for this exam. This leads me to
believe that you may possibly be asked to configure some basic
Security-based solutions when taking the RS CCIE lab.
Cisco states, The Routing and Switching Lab exam tests any feature that can
be configured on the equipment in the Equipment List, except for LAT,
DECnet, Apollo, Banyan VINES, ISO CLNS, XNS, ATM LANE, X.25, and Appletalk.
Nothing is said about Security being exempt from the RS CCIE lab.
However, I also believe that major testing of Security-based solutions would
be tested on the Security CCIE lab. Just be aware that you could possibly
see some Security on the standard RS CCIE lab.

I have same issue. My solution was to start focusing on the CCIE Routing

Switching (still in the process of studying). Theory is that most of the
advanced knowledge gained by CCIE will help with the specializations.

Spam [7:52650]

2002-09-03 Thread Hamed Sedighi

Hi,
Some days ago, I got an email from a network administrator who reported to me
about some spam mails from some IP Address which belong to my network. When I
investigated about those mails, I underestand the all of spam mails have been
sent without passing from my Mail Server. By the way, I don't have any smtp
services on my other stations or servers. How is it possible? Is there any
way
to block these Spam Emails in my Router? I will be happy if you advise me
about this problem.

Tonight's Homily - Keeping an Even Keel [7:52651]

2002-09-03 Thread Chuck's Long Road

A look at the calendar shows me that I am 90 days away. A long time in some
ways. Not much in others. With two Lab attempts behind me, I know all too
well that ninety days is not much time.

On the other hand, I'm a lot more juiced than before. With the announced
removal of some of the trivia, I'm finding my studies a bit easier in that I
can talk to customers about what I am learning. QoS is relevant. The 3550
switches are relevant. I'm studying things I sell, things that will help my
customers. No ATM LANE, no IGRP, no token ring, no IPX. These are things
customers are throwing out the window. DLSW? Well there has to be SOMETHING
in the Lab just to mess with you :-

The router IOS's have all been changed to something that supports the
technologies I believe are being emphasized. I heard a rumor today that
voice is worth a lot more points than it was last time through. Good.
Counting on my fingers, I'm estimating that 60% of the next Lab I see will
be this good clean difficult but relevant stuff.

So I'm jazzed. I'm enjoying my reading. I'm digging in with yellow pen and a
notebook for writing down things to test. I'm going to be saving the big
labs - the NLI, the IP Expert - for special occasions. Maybe once a month
for now. During the last two weeks I'll be doing nothing but labs. Right now
I just want to test things, test ideas, get used to the commands, read the
documentation ( something I didn't do enough of last time around )

The most difficult thing I am finding is keeping an even keel. It is far too
easy for me to ride the peaks, then burn out, and have to fight my way back
to concentrating on the task at hand. Keeping it even. That's the key. Go
out each and every day, one day at a time, one task at a time, practicing
the habits that make one successful.

Over the years I have collected the good advice of people who have achieved
their CCIE. Some of it is there on my web site. Some of it is on one of the
computers around here, waiting for me to find the time to edit it and
publish. One thing I do recall inferring from, but not seeing explicitly
stated, in all that advice is keeping an even keel. Keeping up the routine.
Going out there day after day, reading, thinking, practicing.

Success is achieved one day at a time, one project at a time, one skill at a
time.

The Groupstudy Homilies will become a once a week format, probably on Sunday
evening, after I've had a weekend of work, and can report more technical
findings, more interesting conclusions. Time is catching up to me. So things
will change.

Still waters. Falling leaves. Clear sunsets.

Goodnight, Everyone.
