Need help with link utilisation [7:55347]

2002-10-10 Thread John Botha (Mnet)

Hi group

I have a problem that is currently scrambling my noodle. Our link to our ISP
shows up as under utilized from a show interface command, most often sitting
at less than 100/255. I questioned the slow response during working hours
with one of their engineers, and his interface to us is showing at running
at greater than 200/255 at the same time that my receiving interface is
showing less than 100/255. Surely transmitter and receiver interfaces should
show the same load?

Any help and/or ideas would be appreciated.

Regards,

John

This may not be relevant since it's just the socket that changes, but you
don't have another workstation with a duplicate address, do you? I have
seen similar symptoms from that.

reading BGP4 table size via SNMP [7:55340]

2002-10-10 Thread Oliver Hensel

Hello.

Does anybody know how I could read the BGP4 table size via
SNMP from a Cisco router (7200VXR and 7603)?

The only suggestion I've found so far is to walk the table
and count. This is not practical for me (full BGP table
with ~120.000 prefixes).

Also scripted telnet or ssh login is not possible for
political reasons.

So, any suggestions?

Thank you and best regards,
Oliver

Interesting enough, after I plugged it in, it shows up under "show

RE: vpn clients on VPN3030, loosing connectivity to DNS servers [7:55332]

2002-10-10 Thread Elijah Savage III

If you find a fix for this please let me know because I have even opened
a TAC case for this exact same thing and they have not been able to
provide me with an answer. We were told to upgrade and did so to the
latest on the concentrator which are 2 3030's, clients range from 3.5.4
to 3.6.2.

Also from time to time our clients seem to get disconnected totally and
have to reconnect, no answer for this either we have the idle time set
for 2 hours. I have been disconnected in the middle of browsing the web
so I know it is not the idle timeout causing it.

Has anyone else experienced this? there are about 350 users connecting
to
VPN3030. Concentrator supplies two dns servers to the client upon
connection. Occasionally and sporadically, loose access to dns servers.

Usually doesn't last very long and regains access to them. It doesn't
appear to loose the setting. just an inquiry, anyone?

Sure.

"show port" will give you information about the installed GBIC or it will
say "No GBIC"

CL: does "show modules" still work? or "show ports"? IIRC, those were the
Cat5 commands I used to use. If not, a "show interface" should work, I would
think.

You're not a dork. SMTP is very dorky, though, and the sender's e-mail
application must have been kind of dorked out too. ;-)

SMTP indicates the end of the mail data by sending a line containing only a
"." In other words, it sends Carriage Return/Line Feed period Carriage
Return/Line Feed. Isn't that arcane?

The sender's e-mail application should still allow someone to type this,
however. RFC 2821 (and probably also the original RFC for SMTP, 821) have a
transparency feature:

Before sending a line of mail text, the SMTP client checks the first
character of the line. If it is a period, one additional period is inserted
at the beginning of the line.

When a line of mail text is received by the SMTP server, it checks the
line. If the line is composed of a single period, it is treated as the end
of mail indicator. If the first character is a period and there are other
characters on the line, the first character is deleted.

Even more arcane! Although not as arcane as OSPF external routes mabye. ;-)

Re: OSPF dead-interval to hello-interval relation? [7:54969]

2002-10-10 Thread Jenny McLeod

Actually, this looks consistent to me. At least as consistent as anything
else Cisco does.
Changing the hello interval drives changes to the dead interval, but not the
reverse.
If the dead interval is set to the default (four times hello interval), and
you change the hello interval, you will change the dead interval.
If the dead interval is *not* the default, then it's assumed that you know
what you want it set to (perhaps a rash assumption), and so in this case
changes to the hello interval don't change the dead interval.
Your changes seem to be consistent with this.

Complicated Network Scenerio [7:55318]

2002-10-10 Thread Azhar Teza

Hi Folks, I have this complicated scenerio, and really need someone's help.
The new network: (2) 6509 Switches with layer 3 blade(5) 3500 Gigabit Stack
for Server farm 1. The subnet will be 192.160.20.0/24 VLAN 20(5) 3500
Gigable Stack for Server farm 2. The subnet will be 192.168.30.0/24 VLAN
30(1) 4006 for IDF will be on VLAN 85, subnet 192.168.85.0.24(1) 4006 for
same IDF, but will be on VLAN 86, subnet 192.168.86.0.24 1st 6509 will be
root bridge for vlan 85 to reach vlan 20, 2nd 6509 will be root bridge for
vlan 85 to reach vlan 302nd 6509 will be a root bridge for vlan 86 to reach
vlan 30, 1st 6509 will be a root bridge for vlan 85 to reach vlan 20. On
top, I will also do HSRP for layer 3 redundancy. per say on 6509's, I could
do 1st
6509:
   2nd 6509int vlan 85
   int vlan 85ip address 192.168.85.2 255.255.255.0
   ip address 192.168.85.3 255.255.255.0standby 1 ip ip
192.168.85.1 standby 1 ip
192.168.85.1standby 1 priority 100
  standby 1 priority 120 int vlan 86
int vlan 86ip address 192.168.86.2
255.255.255.0 ip address 192.168.86.3
255.255.255.0 standby 1 ip 192.168.86.1
 standby 1 ip 192.168.86.1standby 1 priority 100
   standby 1 priority 120 Sam!
e procedure for server farm vlans 20 and 30, and other vlans. To add the complexity,
customer has an exisiting network and want to migrate slowly by connecting their
existing network to this new network. Customer currently has (2) Catalyst 4000 Server
Farm switches and two 7500 router. and tons of IDF swithes and they reach the server
farm switches via 7500 routers. 1st 4006 has subnet 192.168.20.0/24 same as we will
use for the new network2nd 4006 has subnet 192.168.30.0/24 again same for the new
server farms. No vlans are used. (2) 7500 router connects to both switch to support
HSRP. 7500 routers are doing both LAN and WAN traffic. Eventually 7500 will only be
used for WAN after the migration. One thing I could do to connect their 4006 switch
to my 3500 server farm switches. All I need to make sure that to assign a different
ip addresses on 6509 switches from the same existing subnets which are 192.168.20.0
and 192.168.30.0. Meaning if the customer is using 192.!
168.20.1 (Virtual ip address for HSRP) and 192.168.20.2 an 192.168.20.3 as physical
address on 1st 7507 and 192.168.30.1 (Virtual IP address for HSRP), 192.168.30.2 and
192.168.30.3 as physical addresses on the 2nd 7507. I could use the different
addresses from the same subnets for my 6509 backbone switches let say, 192.168.20.252
(virtual ip address, and 192.168.20.253 and 254 as a physical ip addresses. Luckily
only server farm subnets can not be changed. For the floors' IDFs they will be using
all new subnets which will not conflict with their exisiting subnets. Now, 6509
switches will be connecting to the new IDF switches. Now, traffic from the 6509 (new
network) and traffic from the 7500 routers should be able to reach the server which
are currently on 4006 switches but slowly will be moved to 3500 gigastack switches.
Will this work? Someone said that first I will have to connect 4006 switches
serverfarm to the new 3500 switch server farm, and then I will also hav!
e to connect 7500 routers direclty to 3500 server farm switches in order for traffic
to reach to server farms from 6509 and 7500 respectivlely. What a mess ? I really
need suggestions here to smoothly do this. Regards, Teza

RE: Again: OSPF external type 2 [7:55291]

2002-10-10 Thread s vermill

And is the cost from that third router to E.F.G.H higher than 8? Page 21 of
RFC 2178 includes this passage:

“When several equal-cost Type 2 routes exist, the internal distance to the
advertising router is used to break the tie.”

It also includes this interesting tidbit:

“Both Type 1 and Type 2 external metrics can be present in the AS at the
same time. In that event, Type 1 external metrics always takes precedence.”

This is contrary to what you will read in at least one Cisco Press book. It
does make more sense to me that Type 1 would be preferred.

The fact that internal cost is used to break the tie at first glance makes a
Type 2 look an awful lot like a Type 1. The RFC addresses the issue.
Basically, it says that when using Type 2, it’s assumed that routing between
AS’s is the greatest cost. The internal cost is insignificant relative to
the cost of moving the packet out of the AS. A Type 2 metric is said to be
“an order of magnitude larger.” I guess this makes it a whole new class of
metric that is allowed to be considered larger, without needing to have
outrageously high numbers. A Type 2 metric of 20 would represent a higher
cost than would a Type 1 metric of 100.

Hello All , I am looking into two litte projects

1. automatically retrieving the config of a 7500 router on a daily basis -
is there a windows based solution anyone knows about for this? If so i would
be interested in purchasing software. If not , any suggestions?

2. setting up a router log server ( not linux based) - same thing is there a

bri0/0.1 and bri0/0.2 keeps going down?? [7:55315]

2002-10-10 Thread Cisco Nuts

Hello,

Once in a couple of days, my Merge isdn simulator keeps breaking down, I
guess.

Bri0/0 shows UP/UP but bri0/0.1 and bri0/0.2 shows down/down.

BRI0/0 10.1.1.1YES manual up
up
BRI0/0.1 unassigned YES unset up

BRI0/0.2 unassigned YES unset up
up
BRI0/0:1 unassigned YES unset down
down
BRI0/0:2 unassigned YES unset down
down

Where did the double bri0/0.1 and .2 come from?

A #debug isdn q931 shows the following:

1d01h: ISDN BR0/0: TX ->  SETUP pd = 8  callref = 0x44
1d01h: Bearer Capability i = 0x8890
1d01h: Channel ID i = 0x83
1d01h: Keypad Facility i = '5551000'
1d01h: ISDN BR0/0: RX <- RELEASE_COMP pd = 8 callref = 0xC4
1d01h: Cause i = 0x82A2 - No circuit/channel available
1d01h: ISDN BR0/0: Setup was rejected, cause = 22

Does anyone know what could be possibly wrong?

Everything else looks fine:

RTD#sh is stat
Global ISDN Switchtype = basic-ni
ISDN BRI0/0 interface
dsl 0, interface ISDN Switchtype = basic-ni
Layer 1 Status:

Layer 2 Status:

Endpoint ID Info: epsf = 0, usid = 2, tid = 1
TEI 81, ces = 2, state = 8(established)
spid2 configured, spid2 sent, spid2 valid

Layer 3 Status:
0 Active Layer 3 Call(s)
Activated dsl 0 CCBs = 0
The Free Channel Mask: 0x8003
Total Allocated ISDN CCBs = 0

Everytime this happens, I have to get back into the Merge, ask it to use the
configured spids and save the config. Obviously, I cannot do this when I am
telnetted from work :-)
And this really slows me down as I have to wait another 9 hours to get back
home and fix this. :-(

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Sincerely

RE: DLSW Backup peer question [7:55311]

2002-10-10 Thread Mike Martins

Ignore the subject.
I checked, on R1 I get full reachability to R3's ethernet network via R2. It
is just an interesting observation that no actual connection is active when
I enter 'sh dlsw peer' on R3 but in fact it is peering with the backup peer.
On R1 I see a Netbios name that sits behind R3 with R2 as the peer via whee
it comes. It is not cached info because I cleared it.
So much for my logic.

RE: Redistribution metrics. [7:55297]

2002-10-10 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

Rajesh Kumar wrote:

This message will have a few basic comments and then a more complicated
comment at the end, when I realized your question was more advanced than we
originally thought...

Routing protocols aren't compatible with each other, but they can learn
information from each other. Specifically, they aren't compatible with
regards to the metrics they use.

When you redistribute a route frome one routing protocol into a new routing
protocol, you have to tell the new routing protocol a starting metric to
use. This must be in the format that the new routing protocol understands.
EIGRP uses bandwidth, delay, reliability, and load. EIGRP routers also share
information about MTU. Although it's not part of the composite metric
calculation, MTU information is associated with a route and shared among
EIGRP routers. (Actually, as Chuck mentioned, reliability and load aren't
used either in the metric calculation unless you configure the metric
weights command, but EIGRP routers share information about these factors
anyway, so you need to include them.)

If a route was learned by OSPF and now you are redistributing it into EIGRP,
the route won't have information about bandwidth, etc. associated with it,
because OSPF uses cost. So you have to manually supply this information.

If you were redistributing from EIGRP into OSPF, then you would have to
manually configure a cost for OSPF.

More comments below...

You're saying that the bandwidth metric will be 10,000 kbps instead of 1544
kbps for these redistributed routes. So you're saying that to reach the
networks that are on the OSPF side, you want the EIGRP routers to know that
they are reachable via a 10,000,000 link, (Ethernet probably?) You wouldn't
want to use this value unless it's true that the link to those networks
really is higher-speed than the 1544 Mbps. You should probably adjust the
delay too. The delay is much lower for 10 Mbps versus 1.544 Mbps.

Where they came from. You're telling EIGRP the metric to use for networks on
the OSPF side. When a router on the EIGRP side receives the EIGRP update
with these networks in it, it take this info into account and info about the
characteristics of the network where the Update arrived. So that EIGRP
network is added into the equation by the recipients and isn't something you
manualy configure when redistributing. You configure the metric as viewed
from the other side, if that makes sense.

DLSW Backup peer question [7:55311]

2002-10-10 Thread Mike Martins

Hi
A DLSW backup peer question if anyone would care to clarify this:

  |>>(BACKUP)>>R2>>>|
R1 R3
  |>>>(primary)>|

I have this DLSW scenario:
R1 can reach R3 via the primary path. I have made my IP routing
so that R1 can reach r2 and r2 can reach r3 on the back up path,
but R1 cannot reach R3 across the whole back up path (because of
the way certain routes are being redistributed).
Anyway, I break the primary link (R1-R3) and the backup kicks in,
so R1 peers with r2. R2 knows all about the netbios stations behind
R3, but no 'official' dlsw connection is active between R2-R3 once the
backup comes in. I looked at the configs on the cisco website and other
examples, there is nothing wrong with my actual configs I dont think.
My logic tells me that there should be a session between r2-r3 and
r2-r1. I can 'force' R2 and R3 establish a connection by adding
remote peer statements on both routers (I tried it and it worked), but of
all the sample configs I looked at none of them had the remote peer
statements on R2/3 equivalent.
Is this normal?

R1
dlsw local-peer peer-id 200.1.1.1
dlsw remote-peer 0 tcp 12.1.1.1
dlsw remote-peer 0 tcp 100.1.1.1 backup-peer 12.1.1.1 linger 5
dlsw bridge-group 1

R2
dlsw local-peer peer-id 100.1.1.1 promiscuous
dlsw bridge-group 1

R3
dlsw local-peer peer-id 12.1.1.1 promiscuous
dlsw bridge-group 1

2002-10-10 Thread Lupi, Guy

There is not enough information here to really help you, from a static route
perspective 2 routes, one with a higher admin distance for the T1 will work
quite well. You should probably run a routing protocol in this scenario, so
that in the event that the T3 line is taking so many errors that it is
unusable, but the line protocol remains up, the fact that you don't have end
to end connectivity to maintain a neighbor relationship will remove the
invalid route from the table.

Dear All,

We do have two sites (LIC and 45). one with MSFC2

and

T-1. We would like to use the T-1 as a backup in case T-3 fails .We

given a

We want a solution to this problem by using Static Routes and

   Administrative Distance.

Note: Please, be advise that the IP addresses might not be the right

one. (Those IPs we came up with are just samples.)

Another consideration is that we have to deal with bridging irb

too so would you please think at anything that we are missing
but solve

 our problem.

We want to see this scenarios from another angle and to consider another

way of achieving our goal (we might need to use IP of Loop back
Interfaces on

both : RSM and MSFC ,or to use IP address of VLAN 20 on one site and VLAN
120

on the other site, also the use of access list too ) by using static
route

Also, you might want to use different IP scheme and also keep in mind
that in

LIC site (vlan 30) the Gateway is 130.0.5.1 and 45 (vlan 120) the GW IP:

is 10.120.9.1 and is configured in all the workstations.

Any help or input it will be GREAT.

Thanks Priscilla for a very good explanation.

The numbers were just made up, but it keeps changing from 85E8 to E885 and
back to 85E8 a second later.

As far as I have found out so far, 85E8 is Microsoft Endpoint Mapper for
RPC, however the workstation is a Windows 98.

I will take a closer look at the workstation, but if anyone have a good
tip, please let me know.

The number after network.node is the IPX socket number, not an SPX socket
number. Some protocols, such as IPX and DDP, have a socket number at the
network layer.

SPX was used by RCONSOLE. Some SNA gateways used it, though most used
NetBIOS. I think some printing can use SPX. Ordinary client/server traffic
uses NetWare Core Protocol (NCP), however, which resides directly above
IPX
and does not use SPX. NCP has its own build-in transport like behavior
that
is similar to the old IPX PEP and provides a semi-reliable delivery
service
for single packet exchanges (often called a ping/pong protocol). SPX
behaves
more like TCP but is way less important and not used by much.

It would be normal for a client's socket number to change if new
appliations
were started or restarted. Could you watch this user and see what they do?
I
usually blame the users. ;-) Could they be playing a game perhaps?

Were those numbers you told us made up to hide the details for security
reasons? Can you tell us the actual numbers?

You can probably get more detailed info at novell.com, but here's a few
nuggets about IPX sockets:

Socket numbers between 0x4000 and 0x7FFF are dynamic sockets; these are
used
by clients to communicate with servers. Socket numbers between 0x8000 and
0x are well-known sockets; these are assigned by Novell to specific
processes. Software developers who write NetWare applications can ask
Novell
to reserve a socket number and get on the list of well-known sockets.
Novell
also reserves several sockets for use in the NetWare environment. Here's a
partial list of socket numbers.

Socket Process
0x0002 Cisco IPX ping
0x0451 NCP server
0x0452 SAP
0x0453 RIP
0x0455 Novell NetBIOS
0x0456 Diagnostics
0x85BE EIGRP
0x9001 NLSP
0x9004 IPXWAN

CL: the only thing to be careful about is understanding the EIGRP defaults
for calculation ( the "k" values )
under normal circumstances, the only metrics that matter are the bandwidth
and the delay values. you have to manually change the "k" values in order
for load, reliability, and MTU values to become part of the equation.

RE: Redistribution metrics. [7:55297]

2002-10-10 Thread Clark, John

What difference does it make when I say "default-metric 1 100 255 1
1550" instead of the above.

answer: EIGRP uses a composite metric so you would be changing the bandwidth
(1) and MTU (1550) for routes from ospf that were redistributed into
EIGRP. All the metric does is set a base metric to start from. Since a
redistributed route did not originate from that router then it does not have
a metric to assign to it and therefore can not run DUAL (or SPF for ospf)
hence you have to assign a metric to that route so that the route has
metrics associated with it. I hope this helps and if I was incorrect about
anything then someone else please correct me.

Subject: Redistribution metrics. [7:55297]

Hi all,

Everytime I get confused with this metrics while redistribution :

The scenario is this :

1. Redist from OSPF to EIGRP.

router eigrp 1
redis ospf 1
default-metric 1544 100 255 1 1500

router ospf 1
redis eigrp 1 subnets
default-metric 25

What difference does it make when I say "default-metric 1 100 255 1
1550" instead of the above.

Does the metrics points to the destination interface ( metrics ) where
it is redistributed into OR it points where the routes are originated
from ( ethernet interface or serial int )?

Thanks,
Rajesh

I'd say they have some old content showing up. They've been busy making

Re: Novell Server node address change [7:55264]

2002-10-10 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

The number after network.node is the IPX socket number, not an SPX socket
number. Some protocols, such as IPX and DDP, have a socket number at the
network layer.

SPX was used by RCONSOLE. Some SNA gateways used it, though most used
NetBIOS. I think some printing can use SPX. Ordinary client/server traffic
uses NetWare Core Protocol (NCP), however, which resides directly above IPX
and does not use SPX. NCP has its own build-in transport like behavior that
is similar to the old IPX PEP and provides a semi-reliable delivery service
for single packet exchanges (often called a ping/pong protocol). SPX behaves
more like TCP but is way less important and not used by much.

It would be normal for a client's socket number to change if new appliations
were started or restarted.

Socket numbers between 0x4000 and 0x7FFF are dynamic sockets; these are used
by clients to communicate with servers. Socket numbers between 0x8000 and
0x are well-known sockets; these are assigned by Novell to specific
processes. Software developers who write NetWare applications can ask Novell
to reserve a socket number and get on the list of well-known sockets. Novell
also reserves several sockets for use in the NetWare environment. Here's a
partial list of socket numbers.

Socket Process
0x0002 Cisco IPX ping
0x0451 NCP server
0x0452 SAP
0x0453 RIP
0x0455 Novell NetBIOS
0x0456 Diagnostics
0x85BE EIGRP
0x9001 NLSP
0x9004 IPXWAN
0x9086 Novell IPX ping

2002-10-10 Thread Rajesh Kumar

Thanks,
Rajesh

I have job for you in Clifton NJ. I haven't cleaned my bathroom this week
and its getting little unsightly. If your good with a mop and broom thats a
big plus. Certifications are also a plus but not nescessary.

and yes this is not hotjobs or monster so don't post here. Lots of people on
this list are looking for work, if we all posted requests for work here it'd
mess things up.

Re: LS1010 problem - Problem solved [7:55275]

2002-10-10 Thread Tangled Up in Blue

Thanks Dave and others! Actually we added cell scrambling (which we had in
there at some point in this process) to both router ATM interfaces and the
framing command you stated, and we got RX red lights on the box. But having
that idea, removed the framing command, kept cell scrambling on the router
int's AND added it to the LS1010 as well and boom, the circuits came up.

One note and question though, even though we can ping ip across the pvc in
both directions now, on the LS1010, the "PING atm int atm 0/0/0 3 40
end-loopback" command does not work, however the same command for the 7500
does not work, and they now have identical PVC 3/x configs. Any thoughts on
that?

..another GroupStudy question success!

Also, you might want to use different IP scheme and also keep in mind
that in

LIC site (vlan 30) the Gateway is 130.0.5.1 and 45 (vlan 120) the GW IP:

is 10.120.9.1 and is configured in all the workstations.

Re: LS1010 problem [7:55275]

2002-10-10 Thread MADMAN

Try adding to the router ATM interfaces:

 atm scrambling cell-payload
 atm framing cbitplcp

The reason the OAM line brings "down" the interface is that OAM is end
to end whereas without OAM you are up but only to the LS1010.

too so would you please think at anything that we are missing
but solve

 our problem.

We want to see this scenarios from another angle and to consider another

way of achieving our goal (we might need to use IP of Loop back
Interfaces on

both : RSM and MSFC ,or to use IP address of VLAN 30 on one site and VLAN
130

on the other site, also the use of access list too ) by using static
route

and administrative distance.

Also, you might want to use different IP scheme and also keep in mind
that in

LIC site (vlan 30) the Gateway is 130.0.5.1 and 39Bway (vlan 130) the GW
IP:

is 10.130.9.1 and is configured in all the workstations.

Any help or input it will be GREAT.

Thank you,

Mike P.

RE: LS1010 problem [7:55275]

2002-10-10 Thread Daniel Cotts

Do you have basic layer one working?
show atm int atm 5/1/0 should be a start. Try the various show atm commands.
My atm experience uses the 11.x command set which is quite different from
what you have. You might want to try that older command set once basic
connectivity between boxes is confirmed. There should be some configs on the
docs for the CX-AIP card.

2002-10-10 Thread Barbu Alexandru

Hi everybody! In about two weeks I will be taking
the remote access exam. I have studied from:

Cisco CCNP Remote Access Exam Certification Guide (the
cisco press book), CCNP Training Kit (questions from
Cisco) and the Boson tests.

I was wondering if you could give me a last advice
or so..

I have two other questions: 1: what is the passing
score? I've seen so many passing scores on different
web sites and I am totally confused. 2: Cisco says
that there are no more 700 series router questions;
are there or aren't there?

Thanks a lot,
Alexandru Barbu

Ed Dames! Although, he'd probably just suggest that the world was going

Yeah, I think you're right. I am not spending much time on the NW side of
my network, so I can't remember all the facts by heart.

The apps installed on that WorkStation are the same as installed on most

Ole, it's been a long time for me as well, but isn't that last set of
numbers - the four after the : ( colon ) the SPX socket number? That is
the
thing that appears to be changing.

Not that I would know what the change signifies. what's running on that

CL: you would think that the telco would give you a mincir of something
faster than what you can get with a dial up connection :->

OSPF External Type 2 question! [7:55276]

2002-10-10 Thread asdfsafa asdfasdf

Hello, I have one question and maybe you could help me
with this.
Suppose that we have several routers speaking OSPF.
Now suppose that two of them (A.B.C.D and E.F.G.G) are
redistributing the same static router (redistribute
static subnet), let's say for example that they are
redistributing X.Y.Z.W/24

LS1010 problem [7:55275]

2002-10-10 Thread Tangled Up in Blue

I can't get a 3600 and a 7500 w/ ATM DS3 ints to communicate over the PVC
through the LS1010!

All documented configuration I've found is v. simple and straightforward,
but something is amiss. Any pointers, advice from the groupstudy guys would
be great (Note, I have a TAC case open on this and they haven't been able to
solve it yet):

Here's a diagram of what we have set up. Very simple setup we have:

NOTES:

- When the routers are terminated with a physical loopback they ping their
own ATM ints just fine.
- All interfaces on the routers have been in production in recent past.
- SW1010 can terminate its interfaces w/ physical loopback and it looks fine
- 3600 interface stopped flapping when we extended its cable.
- Routers can ping their own ATM ints also when they are plugged into LS1010
AND the other LS1010 interface it is mapped to is plugged into itself with
at physical loopback.
- 3600 can ping its own ATM int even when it is plugged into LS1010 AND 7500
is plugged into other LS1010 interface to which its mapped
- Also, on the LS1010, when we do a "ping atm interface atm0/0/1 3 50
end-loopback" command it works fine (this is with a normal setup like i just
mentioned above), but the same "ping atm" command mapping to the 7500's
interface and pvc does not work because we can't run OAM-PVC MANAGE on the
7500 sub-int without it bringing down the interface??
- Throughout this process we have occasionally been able to get pings
through from the 3600 atm int to the 7500 atm int.
- We've tried many debugs, and one common debug message on pings is
"encapsulation failed", but we have aal5snap defined on both ends of the PVC
- I know we don't need ILMI on a PVC, but it helps for debugging
- Both atm interfaces on the routers are set to CLOCKING=LINE, and the
LS1010 is set to "Current clock source:System clock, priority:1"

Any advice or help would be appreciated!

Jason Evans

I'm curious. We offer DSL and CIR as far as I've ever dealt with it is the
minimum throughput the telco will guarantee. Are they mistating? For
example, our 768x128 dsl has a cir of 10k.

Actually, the pvc 0/35 is just to put numbers in the holes. We have DSL
customers over our ATM circuits using every type of router imaginable from
speedstream to cisco and they all always have the same pvc on their end.
Just my nickel's worth. :)

Dream lab

2 3640s with 2 FE, 2 t1 serial ints, and ATM 155 (or 2621 with two wic-1ts,
if ATM cannot be part of this dream)

3 2610s with two t1 serial

3 2611s with 2 t1 serial

2 2501s (to be used as backbone routers in scenarios like Ipexpert's)

1 2523 or 2522 as frame switch and third backbone router to connect to

 Voice equipment -- 2X NM-1V and 2X VIC-2FXS to move about among the 2600s
or 2640s as needed

1 LS 1010

1 ISDN Simulator

2 3550s EMI

Okay, it's not realistic, but he did say "dream lab". Just be glad I didn't
make them all 3662s.

Ole, it's been a long time for me as well, but isn't that last set of

thing that appears to be changing.

Not that I would know what the change signifies. what's running on that

RE: CCDP Recert Exam #640-529 [7:55091]

2002-10-10 Thread Dale Cullum

I too am working on this, and its proving to be a struggle, as the
questions for this are taken from four different exams
(640-503,640-504,640-505 and 640-025). Unfortunately cisco has long
since pulled these exams (except 640-025), so getting relevant materials
to study from is difficult. It does not help that I have not touched a
Cisco router for more than two years!

I think I may just get the closest Boson tests for each of the 4 exams
and just practise/learn from them until I am happy with the core topics.
If I fail the exam first time it will be more of an experiment than a
disaster!

Regards

Dale

Re: Friday Follies On Wednesday - what's the problem? [7:55218]

2002-10-10 Thread John Neiberger

So, what's the answer? Or do we have to wait until Friday?? I'll admit
that I still haven't figured out where you're going with this one. I'll
probably smack myself in the head when you give us the answer.

OT: Novell Server node address change [7:55264]

2002-10-10 Thread Ole D Jensen

This is a good step off the Cisco topic, but since it is in the network
world, I'm sure at least one person on this list knows the answer.

I have an old Novell NetWare 4.10 running, and sometimes it start changing
the address of one specific workstation. I have looked over and over at
the workstation to find a possible bug, but everything lookes fine, and
reinstalling the Novell Client has not changed anything.

Every 30 seconds, the Novell Server changes the node address back and
forth:

10-10-028:20:00 am:Server-4.10-3191
Server WORKSTATION_27
Address has changed from 0040:123456789012:1234
to 0040:123456789012:3412
Information came from router at 123456789012

10-10-028:20:01 am:Server-4.10-3191

Server WORKSTATION_27
Address has changed from 0040:123456789012:3412
to 0040:123456789012:1234
Information came from router at 123456789012

To avoid misunderstandings, the WORKSTATION_27 is the workstation that it
keeps changing the address on. I am not sure if it's the workstation
itself that changes this address or the server, but it also says that the
information came from router 123456789012 which is the workstation.

I'm sure there's a logical explanation for this.

Thanks in advance for any comments,

Ole

Re: CCNP brain dump!!!!!! [7:55166]

2002-10-10 Thread Johnny Routin

I just lost alot of respect for Nokia knowing that they hire people with no
experience for their security engineer positions. I guess it demonstrates
how big the tech bubble was in 2000...

Nokia HR Person
Do you have any experience in networking and/or security?

CCNP with no practical experience...
No, but I have my CCNP!

Nokia HR Person
Great... you're hired... does 90k a year sound ok or would you like more?

CCNP with no practical experience...
Yea... I guess I'll be nice to you and start with that... Just remember me
at bonus time... I am a CCNP after all...

OT: Cisco ExecNet [7:55259]

2002-10-10 Thread Albert Lu

Hello Group,

Has anyone checked out the Cisco ExecNet, which is basically thoughts about
where technology is heading in the future from the VPs at Cisco.

http://newsroom.cisco.com/dlls/tln/execnet/

>From what they are saying (specifically Mike Volpi), the direction for
technology is heading towards: CDN, Security, Wireless, IP Telephony, VPN.
Reegineering business processes to best utilise these technologies in order
to improve productivity and reduce cost for enterprises.

Does anyone have any comments about this, and where money will be spent in
the future for technologies?

Regards,

FW: #640-603 RTING - Being Retired [7:55188]

2002-10-10 Thread Fred Devera

It looks like we've got until 10/25. That's less than 16 days before Routing
640-603 is retired (some of you may have 640-503 books which is pretty much
the same thing as 640-603). As far as I can tell, the only thing different
in the new Routing test (BSCN 640-901) is that it includes knowing and
configuring the IS-IS protocol. See the following link:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/current_exam
s/640-901.html

Also, the Boson Router simulator does not cover IS-IS, BGP, or OSPF in
Multiple areas - it only covers OSPF in single areas and EIGRP. Cisco CIM
DVP - covers EIGRP as well. The Sybex CCNP Virtual lab ($199) covers BGP,
OSPF in multiple areas, and everything else (including the other CCNP tests)
but leaves out IS-IS for Routing. If you end up taking the test after 10/25,
Cisco has a CIM for IS-IS, which also includes OSPF for $89.96:

http://www.ciscopress.com/catalog/product.asp?product_id={032E05FE-681A-43E5
-949F-579FCBA3E63D} (don't click, copy this link since the "}" is actually
part of the link.)

Here's some information on IS-IS incase you plan on taking the Routing test
after 10/25 and don't want to buy another book:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/732/Tech/routing/isis.shtml
http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/Support/browse/psp_view.pl?p=Internetworking:I
SIS

Do any of you nice people in Groupstudy have any suggestions or
recommendations to help our little study group out? All of us are CCNA, have
no access to real equipment, and only one of us has any real experience.

Thanks,

I just noticed on CCO that on October 25th, exam 640-603 will be
retired. Certification reqs. for CCNP and CCDP already reflect this and list
only BSCI as an exam for CCNP/CCDP.

People out-there preparing for 640-603 should either hurry up, or
recheck the requirements for BSCI...

Two observations...

3.5 years experience is a little light for a "consultant/architect"
This list is not a job list... groupstudy has one of those but you did not
