Re: EIGRP [7:49678]
I had a conversation with a cisco engineer about why there are so many undocumented commands. He basically told me that before a command is documented it needs to be documented (no pun intended) by the engineer, this as it turns out is not as easy as it would sounds. There is a process that needs to be completed on the engineers side that documents all possible output, provides debugs and command syntax in all possible compinations. The fact that this is so time consuming many engineers avoid doing it! Oleg Oz. RE: VLAN Trunk Protocol [7:49647]
VTP - is only used to disseminate information among switches in the same VTP domain - or manage VLAN configurations. Setting a switch as a server allows you to add/delete/modify VLAN's from that switch for the entire VTP domain. If the VTP domain server dies :( no problem, your domain will be fine, however you will not be able to perform your add/deletes/modifys on that domain. This can be remedied by making another switch a SERVER. Hope that answers you question. Oleg Oz. Frank, Like you I did not study for the beta exam (I wanted to know what it was all about and not loose 300 bucks.) I have not received my graded beta exam yet not did I expect to pass (however if the pass grade was 45, I may have passed.) You are on target with saying that the current exam was much easier (mostly becasue the beta had newly added subjects that I have no practical experiance with.) CCIE beta results [7:45853]
I took the CCIE beta exam at the begining on May (a day beofore the end) and could wait no more. I called prometric to see if they had a grade in thier system, they told me that thier system showed a "P" for pass (I called twice to confirm.) Cisco's system does not show anything yet (I know it can take up to ten days to show up.) Now, I still do not belive that I passed (until I have the printed copy in my hand) and wanted to check with the group to see if anyone else had this experience. That is, not getting the official results and calling prometric to get the results (and the finding out the the info prometric had was not correct. Thanks Oleg. RE: Not the whole domain - Re: Delete VLAN [7:37254]
I belive that the part about a VTP client not saving VLAN information is not correct. Yes, a client gets updates from the VTP server and Yes "changes" (add, delete, mods) can only be initaited on a server. But, I belive that the client does save the most current revision of the VTP domain config in memory. Also, If a VTP server reloads and some how loses (or has cleared) its VLAN info but retains the VTP domain configuration and its revision number somehow is lower than a clients revision, the server will accept config the VLAN conifguration from the client. Atleast that is what I think/remember. Oleg Oz... RE: Ethernet or FastEthernet [7:35245]
Mike, yes the IEEE802.1Q does insert the VLAN tag into the frame (ISL encapsulates the frame.) I am going to try and get this part right. The max frame size for an ethernet frame is 1518, however if you are going to insert the 801.1Q Vlan tag you would require an additional 4 bytes. 2 bytes for Length/Type = 802.1Q Tag Type 2 bytes for Tag Control Information) Bringing the grand total to 1522. I belive that the older chip sets supported a max of 1518 (later the standard was changed to support 1522.) So, I belive that the age on the hardware has a bit to do with this as the change to the frame size (or the IEEE standard change) did not occur until sometime in '98. Now Cisco's ISL came along and decided to take it a bit further. Cisco's implementation encapsulates the frame (the original 1518 byte frame) and by doing so adds 30 more bytes. This 1548 byte max. frame again presents a problem to older Ethernet chip sets. So you may find certine Ethernet HW that will support the 1522 byte size and not the 1548 byte size (I am pretty sure of this but will not swear to it) and hence some hardware will support 802.1Q and not ISL. I hope I am not wrong about this. Oleg Oz... http://www.techfest.com/networking/lan/ethernet2.htm http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/741_4.html Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=35404&t=35245 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: Ethernet or FastEthernet [7:35245]
I also belive that it is possible to run isl/802.1Q over ethernet. I seem to remember reading that the limiting factor was the age of the ethernet hardware. The originally ethernet chips used in cisco network modules only supported a fixed frame size. When ISL/802.1Q came along, the hardware needed to support some additional space to accomadate the VLAN info. This was a problem with older ethernet chips sets however the newer hardware supports this. The chip sets used on the FE board did not have this problem because they were already designed to allow for a larger frame. Can anyone verify my recollection??? Oleg Oz.. I would think the reality of a CCIE proves to a potential employer 1. Broad knowledge on internetworking 2. A deep knowledge of Cisco products 3. A stout troubleshooting methodology. 4. Ability to interpret the big picture 5. Fast ramp up speed on current technology 6. Communicate all of the above to the pinheads like me and the bean counters. Anything outside this is fair game so to speak and the market will dictate the results. It's really just an MD of Internetworking and then you will specialise in an area (s). So being that just like an MD you need to know a little about a lot and then as the specialist you add a lot about a little. And just like most other high end jobs it's in a state of flux. Re: Legacy???
Legacy means specific to a particular company it's really I guess its a nice way of saying odd ball, off the wall, also . As in each "legacy" piece of hardware/ software has to be dealt with seperately. As in DEC Vines etc In the software world legacy usually means an application that is specific to the company. Like say a bank that hass there own accounting system built . Re: Why the ban on HTML email??
For the members who use the digest for it becomes a mess and publishing on web pages becomes messy also. Don't forget many members don''t have cheap high speed access and may pay by the minute and or what they download. Then by using HTML we end us with 60 K posts because everyone likes a background and pic of their favorite dog. And just to make more painful some whacked out font which then kicks the browsers into loading yet more garbage. Re: 2621 Router crash with compression module activated
Bus Error / SegV Exception Bus errors and SegV Exceptions are the most common types of crashes. They occur when the processor tries to access a memory-mapped address that either does not exist (software error) or does not respond in time (hardware problem). A SegV exception occurs only on the RISC processors when the memory-mapped address does not exist. The type of processor (RISC or 68000) is seen using the show version command. Below is the important information you see in the output of show version taken from two different routers: cisco 3640 (R4700) processor (revision 0x00) with 49152K/16384K bytes of memory. ^ +- The R indicates a RISC processor. cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision D) with 8192K/2048K bytes of memory. ^ +- This indicates a non-RISC processor. The address the processor was trying to access when the system crashed provides some indication as to whether the failure is due to software or hardware. For the 68000 processors, if the operand address is a valid physical memory address in the memory map, the problem is probably in the hardware. Bus errors on an address not in the map usually indicate a software bug. Get the show stack output decoded. For the RISC processors, the rule about addressing errors being due to hardware when the address is valid doesn't work anymore. This is because some memory regions do not support all types of CPU accesses, and the hardware will correctly return an error if the software incorrectly uses the wrong access mode. On RISC processors, the virtual addresses are used instead of directly accessing the physical addresses. Get confirmation from an experienced engineer before swapping hardware based on an addressing error Oz http://www.mcseco-op.com/helpfull_links.htm ___ UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: CIT Support Exam in CCNP 2.0 Track.
In a frame cloud it relates to the QOS levels your bandwidth contract has it's know as BIR (Burst Information Rate and CIR Committed Information Rate My understanding in simple terms is CIR means a guarenteed availablitity of say 128K burstable to say 1.5 meg on a T1 But the higher the CIR the more you pay Whichs means you get 128 k all the time and subject to availability 1.5 meg ie in the middle of the night Heh Cisco call it this too CIR committed information rate. Rate at which a Frame Relay network agrees to transfer information under normal conditions, averaged over a minimum increment of time. CIR, measured in bits per second, is one of the key negotiated tariff metrics. Bc Committed Burst. Negotiated tariff metric in Frame Relay internetworks. The maximum amount of data (in bits) that a Frame Relay internetwork is committed to accept and transmit at the CIR Be excess burst. Negotiated tariff metric in Frame Relay internetworks. The number of bits that a Frame Relay internetwork will attempt to transmit after Bc is accommodated. Be data is, in general, delivered with a lower probability than Bc data because Be data can be marked as DE by the network. Re: ISDN problem
Description: Protocol suite: PPP. Type: PPP Network Control Protocol. PPP Protocol: 0x8031. A Network Control Protocol (NCP) used for establishing and configuring Remote Bridging protocol over PPP links. RFC 1638, pages 1, 2, 9 and 10: This document defines the Network Control Protocol for establishing and configuring Remote Bridging for PPP links. Two basic algorithms are ambient in the industry for Bridging of Local Area Networks. The more common algorithm is called "Transparent Bridging", and has been standardized for Extended LAN configurations by IEEE 802.1. The other is called "Source Route Bridging", and is prevalent on IEEE 802.5 Token Ring LANs. The IEEE has combined these two methods into a device called a Source Routing Transparent (SRT) bridge, which concurrently provides both Source Route and Transparent bridging. The Bridging Control Protocol (BCP) is responsible for configuring, enabling and disabling the bridge protocol modules on both ends of the point-to-point link. BCP uses the same packet exchange mechanism as the Link Control Protocol. BCP packets may not be exchanged until PPP has reached the Network-Layer Protocol phase. BCP packets received before this phase is reached SHOULD be silently discarded. Before any Bridged LAN Traffic or BPDUs may be communicated, PPP MUST reach the Network-Layer Protocol phase, and the Bridging Control Protocol MUST reach the Opened state. hmmm long spiel maybe bridging is not set on the other end ? Re: Cisco Prerequisites
Erik, That took about 2 minutes to find on the web and you probably needed service pack applied .. Thats what the hell that means and we all know you hate windows and thats fine . But please you cannot tell new folks to forget it .. I have worked in huge enviroments that had lots of NT and windows and many issues would not have been solved if my knowledge of NT was not there.. As a router dude you can get a lot of issues that can SEEM to be wan related when in fact it can be simple desktop/server issues.. Sure there are many folks out there that know networking and unix but also by not knowing NT windows could limit those same folks too . Just like my limited Unix limits me .too. And for folks just starting up NT is fine as chances are they will start at the desktop anyhow .. And there is not many unix desktops around these days . And whether you like it or not Cisco is making more stuff for NT all the time and there are some that are NT windows only .. I don't care for any particular OS to me they all are the same.. But I have to care because many places are multi OS environments and you need to know a little about them all. And I am not trying to start an OS war here just trying to give some balance here.. The market has shifted and thats a fact and so will the workforce have to shift in the direction of the market it's just that simple.. For someone on a limited budget NT can help them out sure they can do Linux but right now there is not much market for entry level Linux folks. Whereas win NT desktop there is tons of work.. And for Adedapo MTA errors usually are due to corrupted databases but I have not played with exchange for a long time. Re: Another New CCIE Book
Sometimes you have to move the mountain to moses. The cost of real routers is not really that much money. The initial cost versus the experience gained is so high % wise that it's foolish to do any other way (just about). I was on an interview today and the dude said and he was kidding I bet you have a few routers at home ? And I told him yes about 20 odd .. Then I told him why I had 20 and he said that I was one of a very few who he had interviewed that had labs at home.. then he said about VOIP and much to his surprise I told him I had a couple of VOIP boxes but just have not has the time to play with them .. I don't really need this job but I am just keeping my options open in case something else does not pan out. But every job I have even from the help desk days it was my playing with the toys that got me jobs more so than letters and passing exams. Because thats how newbies get the experience by buying the toys and playing with them SEEING how it works and or does not work .. FOR ME that helps me understand it all . like right now playing with Checkpoint and it's cool I can create a real complicated access list debug it then export in to a router cool huh. Kinda make the Cisco was a little arcane but it has helped me understand access lists a heap more. Which mean I just learn that I know very little sigh Oz http://www.mcseco-op.com/helpfull_links.htm Maybe the Lab as I strongly suspect and the contributors here have rightly indicated is the make/break but the simple question is where the devil is Cisco going to find the Networkers to do the job? Where is the hands on going to come and who is going to let a newbie anywhere near an operational router? ___ UPDATED Posting Guidelines: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/guide.html FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Passed COD
Maybe the wifes don't understand just like most of us men don't understand the toilet seat lid up thingy. Maybe cause we forget to acknowledge the work the wife performs behind the scenes as we are miles away in our clouds. I am sure to a point it becomes a slight form of jealousy as we take way wife and family time .. But even tho they may not say much to you . I am sure she brags about it to her friends. I overheard a conversation my wife had with one of her friends and it went something like this.. Oh he works on networks and Cisco stuff and servers.. Cisco that the company that joins all the internet together.. ( maybe you have to explain in very basic terms what routers do ) Sigh my kitchenette look like a computer store with cables and equipment all over the place. Heck no I don't touch anything. his mess his problem.. yes the money is great but sometimes he is never home but I am used to it know. it makes him happy and provides for the family so it's good. he has worked very hard to get where he is so at least it's better than race cars. And he has his own money to buy stuff and at least he is home playing rather than in a garage somewhere or driving all over the place. the rest was woman talk So the wifes do understand to a point just as a side bar I just asked my 7 yro old what i do for a job and he said a "computerist" heh. I asked did he know what a network was and he did not know . So I asked him what the internet was and he says a bunch of servers. So I tell OK so Daddy helps build the internet. Ok says the 7 yro then you build servers ? Re: Cisco specializations - Which?
VPN's and firewall are hot and an easy sell. Easy to sell when you mention security and or lack thereof. Wireless at the moment I see as speciality deal the same with phones many big corps already own private phone networks so they are not ready to jump into the VOIP deal. Re: Working hour
It really depends Some corps work a 35 hour week some a 40 hour week. Also if you are staff it makes a difference also. I average a 55 hour week and have worked 80 hour weeks .. generally speaking staff will work more hours than contractors on a the same site simply because the contractors get paid for every hour where a staff gets paid a flat rate .. OTOH I worked on a site where it was the exact opposite as the staff were very lazy and once the 40 hours were up they went home and left the resulting mess for the contractors to clean up. I would figure my average would be in the 55 hour range not including the call in the missle of the night etc. The biggest difference I see is when rolling out a site versus maintaining a site . During the rollout the hours can be very very long but once the site is done and after the debugging is done then things calm down a little ( sometimes) Oz http://www.mcseco-op.com/helpfull_links.htm What is the normal working hour per week in each country? and what is the normal working hour per week for NETWORK ENGINEER have to work per week? Re: Nooo! I failed! what now?
hey no big deal look at it as $100 invested into the future .. No one said the tests will be easy ( sure few have but many know better) What's the big rush if you pass this week next week or in 10 weeks what is the most important fact about passing.. ? Some silly letters after your name or a strong basic foundation to build more knowledge on. Me thinks the latter is more important. Go get yourself a router to play and you will pass the ios portion and learn some troubleshooting . The more I play with this stuff the more FOR ME I realize that there is NO book in the world going to teach me all of this only just supplement knowledge at best. AN important factor maybe for you to understand why you did not pass . Maybe look at alternate learning methods , maybe you may have the same problem as me read but can't remember so I do it then I remember. Hmm let me re-phrase that I do remember by reading but I remember more by doing .. I have an app lying around somewhere that helps you define which part of your brain you use during the learning process. I will dig it out and throw it on my web site for you. Don;t let this be a problem it's just a fumble in the game the key is to learn from the mistake and go forward . Thats why we have our eyes in the front of our head. A mistake only retains it's status by repetition. Save driving yourself nuts and a potential law suit from a person with a 2503 embedded in their skull try using terraterm you can get it free from the link below. Heh Oz http://www.mcseco-op.com/helpfull_links.htm I had the same problem with a 2501. Must have something to do with the console port chips that Cisco uses. Re: RPC on Solaris
maybe a sparky newsgroup would help you out a little better the answer came from Sun. older cuts of solaris 7 (cuts before 11/99) had a bug (id 4194687) where the keyserv would try to start up, which it shouldn't, on reboot. the work around is either use a newer cut of the cd or set your /etc/domainname, even if you're not using NIS. I am assuming that is why a lot of folks never saw it as a problem - they use NIS so they had this set. from www.google.com Oz http://www.mcseco-op.com/helpfull_links.htm Hi All, I have installed Solaris 2.7 on Sun E 450. Re: Internet Access
Just have about 50 users all hitting the internet at the same time they will get the idea.. ( grin) if you do the math 128 K divided by 500 aint ,much at all . But How many folks DO use the internet, how much time per day do they surf ? How much stuff do you cache with a proxy server / What are they doing on the internet ? Corp to corp data transfer, email , ??? the easiest way if the net is part of their job is to show how much time is wasted waiting to access pages etc this can create a good ROI argument . I guess one way would be to random sample 10 users, Dump their browser cache and monitor it for size at the end of each day. then if each user get say 2 meg of temp files on the cache you can make some projections from that. Sure thats not really super accurate but it will give you an idea .. Also you may want to look into local caching if they hit a lot of the same sites all the time.. Also if you have proxy server that can give you a lot of info too. the magic # really depends on what kind of performance . if you want a deal like everyone can get average performance at any given time Guaranteed then use say 5k per user. this way you would have close to 56k modem dialup speed. And if less people are on the performance will increase guess you need the corp to define a QOS level and go from there. I can tell you that I have been on site with 40 users and 56 k lease line and it's pretty ugly surfing the net., heh Oz http://www.mcseco-op.com/helpfull_links.htm I would like to get some ideas on how to tackle one customer. Re: Router CPU power
When the router boots up it will tell you what CPU is used . or the cisco site for the different routers or search in this case MPC860 and when you see this on the info Motorola MPC860 40 MHz (50 MHz for Cisco 262x) it gets more confusing So i guess the MPC860 can be either speed.
