What you have here is a contradiction in terms. There are no cheap simulators. Black Box sells a simulator that I know nothing about, but they do offer 20% for you first purchase. This brings the price down around $1700 I think. If you check the archives, there is mention of a company in Dallas that resells the every popular Teltone. This is supposed to be one of the cheaper outlets to purchase this simulator. I chose the Emutel because of the software reconfiguration of the ports between S/T and U. I don't think the Teltone does that. The Emutel also is completely configurable with respect to numbers and such. I think the Teltone is a fixed number configuration. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. The Emutel is around $2000 and you can purchase them from a company in San Francisco. And then there is the Adtran Atlas 550, with modules it is more expensive than any of the above, but leaves you with unlimited configurations for your lab. I love my Emulel, but it took me a while to figure some things out, so here's what you need to get the thing running... Emutel Lite ISDN BRI Simulator Configuration PortB-channel DN* SPID 1 1 384000 384001 1 2 384010 384002 2 1 384020 384021 2 2 384030 384022 * The DN (Directory Number) is similar to a phone number used to identify a desired connection. The ISDN switch-type for the Emutel Lite is basic-dms100. If you are planning to attach this unit to Cisco 2503's you will need two NT1s; hardware devices that can be purchased retail for $150-200, or on e-bay for about $50 (don't forget, you need 2 of them)... OK lets see, using your prices here is a price comparison of renting two ISDN lines or buying a ISDN simulator for the typical 4 month study period required to get your CCIE certification. Two line ISDN rental: $300 setup fee's and $100.00 per month rental fee's Purchase 1 Teltone ISDN Demonstrator: (has two ISDN line capability) $1700.00 OK you are now in for $700.00 in rental fees or $1700.00 ownership costs. Here is where the buying pays off, most CCIE candidates fail their first attempt and a retest is now a seven month waiting period which equates to $700 more in rental fees bringing your total to $1400.00. Still cheaper than owning an ISDN sim though huh? Not quite... You can now turn around and sell your ISDN simulator for close to what you paid for it say $1500.00 bringing you total cost of ISDN practice to $200.00. Depending upon your location maybe you could order a couple of ISDN lines. Where I'm at, for residental, they are $40 flat rate monthly. Cisco has one for $150.00 , it's their CIM CD it's really good, almost real and it has much more QA to. www.cisco.com/go/cim or www.ciscopress.com/cim they have 6 CD's and one of them is the ISDN one. Hi Charles, I agree with Andy...check into the monthly rate of ISDN in your area, that may be the best way to go. A few months ago, another engineer and I bought a ISDN simulator from ARCA Technologies. We decided upon ARCA mainly due to the fact that they have a 2 port BRI simulator with built in NT1s. They were little more expensive than Teltone, but the unit has worked fine. I agree, its a hefty investment for your lab, and perhaps sharing the cost of the simulator may make it more affordable ? FYI My company just purchased an ARCA Solo. The ISDN ports can be software switched to S/T or U interface. Also they can be switched to ADSL if required. Rest of the features are same as the Emutel lite. I heard that they have stopped the Emutel Lite. Cost of the Solo is same at the LITE.. about $1995 plus shipping. I that for a single user $1995 is a bit too high. But if the company is paying then i guess its okay. Buy a real one if you are planning on going for the CCIE. You will need it. You could rent the lines but it is like pouring money down the drain because you will not get it back. You can resell your used simulator for the same as you paid for it after your done with it! Bear in mind, the CCIE lab retest schedule is approaching 6 months. If you fail it the first time you are going to have to rent those lines for quite a bit longer than you expected to originally. With setup fee's and monthly charges you could pay up to $500.00 for six months. If you need them longer, keep adding monthly charges to that number! BTW, with the inclusion of IPSec in the CCIE lab you may also want to invest in a telephone line simulator too. Teltone makes a number of decent ones. Expect to pay close to $1600.00 for a Teltone ISDN demonstrator, used or new, and the Telco sim will be between 200 and 500 depending on the model. Most importantly for CCIE candidates, the sim products cannot do a fraction of the scenarios you will need to know for the CCIE. It's funny... maybe an hour ago I got an e-mail from Amazon suggesting I take a look at the ISDN CIM for only $120. Is that a sign? I'm in the market for an ISDN simulator, but I'll probably bite the cost and still just get the actual physical box as opposed to the CIM. I know Amazon has an extremely accurate profiling database; it's uncanny how dead on their recommendations become after you spend a lot of money with them over the course of a few years. I agree, you need real ISDN. Everyone I've talked with sees ISDN on day 1 in the lab. (I just failed my lab by a couple of points, but not due to a lack of ISDN knowledge - But at least I made it to Day 2 ) I'm putting my ISDN simulator up for sale on eBay today. It's a Teltone ILS-2000 (not the cheaper demonstrator) purchased new 6 months ago for $2800.00. It has 2 S/T and 2 U ISDN connections, is software configurable for different switch types and spids. It emulates NI-1, AT&T Custom, DMS Custom, and ETSI (European) Switch types. It comes with software, serial cable, and manuals. Just picked up and Emutel Solo this week. PROS 1. Interfaces are S or U software configurable 2. All numbers and spids are software configurable 3. Uses a power supply, but has a battery for about 2 hours of runtime when disconnected from PS. Easy to take home or on the road. CONS 1. Worst documentation I have seen in a while. 2. Yes, what they have is correct. It's a floating static route that is given an admin distance higher than the one derived through the routing protocol. It is designed to kick in as a last resort. They are routing all traffic to 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255 out interface BRI0 and setting an admin distance of 200 on that route. There is nothing wrong with this and, in fact, it is quite normal. Fred, My first question would be which model did you get? The ILS 2000 comes with support for both U and ST BRI interfaces, whereas the Demonstrator only supports the U interface. What does this mean...? You'll need two NT1's in order to make your connection if this is the case. BS, I don't how much different the ILS 2000 is from your model, but the one I have has a RS-232 async <---> DB 9 connection for the software support. Teltone has the software that can be downloaded from their web site. Basically it allows you to change between the 4 major bri switch types... National ISDN-1 AT&T Custom DMS100 ETSI The only difference here is that like the National ISDN-1 which requires "spids" to be configured the AT&T Custom does not require them. Hey guys, I found out my problem. I am using a Demonstrator, even though the person who sold it to me told me that it was a Teltone-2000. To compound the problem, one of my straight through cables only has pins 1, 2, 3, and 6. I'm glad I had a few NT1s sitting around. I dont think there is any such thing as an "affordable" ISDN simulator but i got the Emutel Solo and it works like a champ. It has configurable S/T or U interfaces and supports all kinds of switch types. It is comparable to the Teltone ILS 2000 ($2800) and the price direct from Arca technologies is $1995. The only problem is that buying it direct is a HUGE pain in the butt. I eventually bought mine from the supplier that is associated with ccbootcamp.com. It was more then the direct price but saved a lot of time an hassle. They sell for pretty big bucks on Ebay so i figure if after i am done with it i can sell it for 70% of what i payed it isn't so painful. HTH Ed ""Raul F. I think you will find that renting real isdn lines will end up being much more expensive. You will really need at least 4 months of time to prep. Even if you use only one line it is going to cost you $240 and then you will not be able to simulate ppp mulitlink. If you look at what the simulators are going for on ebay they hold their value very well. I have seen people sell slimlines used for more then you are selling them new. They rarely go for less then $100 off of the new price. If a person is patient you can find an older merge for around $1000 on ebay every now and then. Also you need to look everywhere on the internet. It's already been said that getting the lines run is usually too expensive. I know from experience. In my area it was $200/mo to install. $80 for 2 B channels. That's just 1 ptp link. you would need to buy another ISDN line to get 4 B channels, and be able to use multilink ppp connections. ($160/mo recurring costs) Simulators. I bought a used Teltone Demonstrator and 2 NT1 devices for $1400. I almost bought an alternative - a 2610 with NM-2V, VIC-2-BRI-NT, which will simulate an ISDN network. The cost on them is almost the same as a regular simulator, with the ISDN simulator being more supported, possibly more "accurate", and ready to use, no configs required. Here's my suggestion for a "shoe string" option. You mentioned your shool, but you say your schedule is off. You can schedule time on remote racks, and you'll have access to the equipment remotely. This way, you can plan on having a day of access to the rack, rather than "hit and miss". I offer this type of rack access at www.CCIEwannabe.com. There you can access all of my routers, and practice on my ISDN simulator. For example, my cost of $20 for 24 hours of access will get you access to the ISDN network, without large investment in equipment. In another month, you can come back, and refine your skills. Your cost after this point would be about as much as it costs to ship a simulator. For me, buying a simulator made the most sense, because I provide it as a service to Cisco canidates. You'll have to determine how much you would be willing to spend to rent, or if it's worth it to put somewhere near $1300 in your home lab. If you find you're wanting to use ISDN daily, the simulator may be a good choice. There are a few good reasons to buy a simulator. You can usually resell it for somewhere close to what you paid for it. If you have ISDN routers at your house, you can access them any time, without scheduling the time. I'll list a couple other online racks you can investigate. JB, No, I think getting an ISDN simulator is more effecient. You can always use your isdn simulator for 6 months than turn around and resell it. I guess it really boils down to how much money you can afford to spend and how much time you will need the ISDN lines for. If you only need the isdn lines for a couple months, then it might make sense to go with a couple ISDN lines. However if you're going to need them for the long haul, (6mos-1yr), I'd go with the simulator. Someone just asked me ISDN simulators, and told me that the price of the one they were thinking of buying, an Emutel, had dropped 500 dollars. I have a Teltone ISDN Demonstrator, and I like it fine, but I would look into the Emutel if its price has fallen so much. You don't need NT1s for the one he is looking at. The Emutel is British, I think, and the folks in Europe don't use NT1s, I gather. They get to connect to S/T interfaces, so their ISDN simulators tend to use S/T interfaces. The Emutel may have U interfaces, too, for all I know, which would be good to have in case you get routers that already have NT1s built in. I believe Steve was referring to the ISDN Simulator equipment, not the software. This is something you can plug into your router to act as an ISDN switch. Steve, there's no standard for the lab since you won't be configuring one in the CCIE lab exam. 2 issues off the top of my head... 1)The physically one router creating one full network (2 points) will not work- it's called IP address overlap and you'll see the errors when you begin to configure this. I have seen this many times within my own goofing-ups. 2)I'm almost positive your 4500 BRI interfaces are S/T and will require an NTI. A second ISDN router should not be a huge investment. I have seen the 2524 and 2525s on Ebay sell for less than $200. With a little memory upgrade- it could run as a peer (Enterprise functions) to your 4500. All the best !!! For the money, the Arca Emutel Solo kicks butt. I had an Arca and I currently have a Atlas and for the money the Arca wins hands down. A couple of features that make the Arca significantly better than then cheapisdn unit and most others on the market is the ports are S/T or U and can be configured as such from a user menu. This is a BIG BONUS. No NT1's necessary. It also has an internal NiCad battery to run for a couple of hours when not attached to a power source. I don't know how useful this feature is in a lab, but great for trade shows. With the correct download code this switch can emulate all the switch types outside North America. You buy the unit as either North American or European, what Arca doesn't really let you know is the only difference is a firmware download to change country emulations. I have both sets of code! Good support even though it is in Ireland. The support was very helpful whenever I had questions or issues. The downside is it only has two ports. I would still be using it today if it weren't for this. I would suggest when you are ready for the ISDN, to rent a rack with the simulator rather then try to bluff your way through it using a sim program. That way you can try all kinds of configs, not just what the sim has. My rack has a 2 port S/T simulator. The newer ones can use either a U or S/T but I got mine at a fair price so beggers can not be too choosy :) Right now it's between two 2500s. The 1600, 2600 etc with WICs can come either flavor, U or S/T. The U interface has the NT1 built in. If the simulator does ST, the NT1 is built in for you. Some will do both.. many older ones only do one or the other. I use an Emutel myself.. I have seen here on the groups one from someone else which looks to be a pretty good deal given the stiff prices of a used simulator on eBay. Kenneth, Hi! That is a Simline2 you are referring to. It's a great ISDN simulator and most certainly the CHEAPEST way to emulate an ISDN switch for a CCIE lab. We've sold quite a few of them and I can recommend them very highly. We used to sell the Emutel Solo which is also an excellent product, it just costs a few hundred more. The main difference between the Simline2 and the Emutel is the Simline2 has only S/T interface types and the Emutel is software selectable for either S/T or U. If you have a 2503, 2504, etc with S/T inteface types, the Simline2 is great because you do not need an external NT1 (like you would with a Teltone ILS-1000 demonstrator). RE: ISDN Simulator Ni1 or AT&T Switch type
It really doesn't matter which one you choose. NI1 is a standard that will run on AT&T's 5ESS and Northern's DMS switch types.
