[slim] Re: Squeezebox sudden problem help!!!!
The SB3 is still unresponsive. It failed to reset to factory settings after numerous attempts. I will let it "rest" for 24 hours and try back tomorrow night. By then, hopefully, I should have an answer from tech support. The strange thing about all this is how sudden and unexpected the "death" was. The SB3 had worked flawlessly since January. No glitches, bugs, crashes, nothing! Many times, after reading about the woes of other users, I said to myself: I am lucky or perhaps I managed to set this thing perfectly right the first time around... But I guess all good things come to an end...It was great while it lasted. [slim] Slimsever 6.2.2 on intel mac so slow it's unusable.
Hello, I used to run slimserver on a Linux box, with the music stored on a NAS device. That Linux box just died on me so I moved to server to my new Intel iMac. (I used the Mac 6.2.2 dmg file) And there I found out that it is barely usable. - The web interface is slow. It takes _several minutes_ before a page apears. During that time music playback stops. - The interface on the box is slow too. To the point of being unusable. It takes between 10-20 seconds for the display to react to key presses on the remote. Half of the time "lost contact with slimserver" apears between updates. All this time the slimserver process only consumes about 3-4% of CPU power. So it is obviously not a computer performance problem. What can I do about this? -- KristVB KristVB's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5660 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24194 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: server database is case sensitive and that's bad. read why.
Well, I have to agree with NWP that this has been an interesting thread, one of those that takes on a life of its own... it started out with a debate about the merits of case sensitivity, did a neat hand-brake turn on the point of whether databases should be case sensitive at all, and has now lurched off into a familiar debate on the role of the slimserver database! Especially entertaining is the bit where someone comments on one topic and has their message interpreted as if it were on another one! Having joined in the first bit, I can't resist joining in the later stages, though, so here is my two penn'orth on the slimserver database... I'm pretty sure that for the large majority of users, the current model is correct, i.e. that the tags are the source of data and that the slimserver database is purely for the convenience of slimserver. This works well because all the ripping programs or download sources provide more-or-less standard tags. However, since slim have gone to the trouble of providing a "proper" database, it would be a real shame if we couldn't use it in a lot more interesting ways. This, I understand, is one of the motivations for moving to MySQL, and I think we see the beginnings of what might be done with erland's plugins. The big issue with the slim database, though - as has been mentioned here as previously - is that it is considered "throwaway", which effectively stops anyone putting interesting information in it. And no, "tags" are not the full answer - I can easily imagine data which is not solely about a track and which therefore doesn't rightly belong in a track's tags (e.g. any information about the relationship between two tracks). So if we are going to store relational information somewhere, AND we want to keep the open principles of slimserver (i.e., its easy for third parties to add functionality and plug in), we need to establish some principles: (1) there is some basic player information that slimserver needs to be able to play tracks. This has to be generated from somewhere (today, from tags). The data model for this stuff is slimserver's to own: the slimserver developers need to be able to make changes to this in future versions without reference to anyone. (2) the writers of plugins to slimserver will want the ability to add extra information in tables of their own (eg Lazysearch). At the moment they are limited to storing information that can easily be regenerated, but in the future they really ought to be able to store stuff persistently somewhere (possibly in a different database). (3) we need to acknowledge that there are other programs and databases out there, which people like JSonnabend want to use for a variety of purposes beyond the knowledge of slim, and which slimserver really ought to be able to co-exist with. So, I think there potentially three different kinds of RELATIONAL data (i.e. in addition to the data that can easily be stored in tags): (1) the data owned by slimserver for the purposes of playing tracks (2) additional data used by slimserver plugins for whatever purpose (3) data managed by applications that slim knows nothing about at all I suspect the three need to be stored in different databases. Also that the right answer for JSonnabend is to provide an easy means of transferring the relevant data from the external database into the slimserver one: as MichaelWagner says, file tags are a simple and standard way of doing this... one drawback I can think of is that you lose the ability to transfer any relational data. Another is that it's not the right answer for dynamic data like "last played". If you don't want to use tags as a communication route, I think you have to link the two databases up (though it creates a maintenance problem for someone). I don't think the answer is to try to shoehorn it all into one database, that would cripple both sets of developers. I'll stop now before my ramblings take on a life of their own, like this thread. [slim] Re: Wireless networking
The whole wireless networking thing is such a mixed bag. I've been having problems with my SB playing OK for a bit (minutes, not hours) then starting to stutter. Like you I've got the less then perfect (though domestically necessary) situation of the SB, router and server (all Belkin kit) all being independently connected to the same wireless network. It's 802.11g so bandwidth shouldn't be a problem but it seems as if the wireless kit in the SB is the problem. It's at the other end of the same room as the router, while the PC is directly above in the upstairs back bedroom. The trouble is that while the PC/Router connection is rock-solid at 97-100% signal strength, the SB manages 60% at best and drops as low as 35%, which is when the stuttering starts. Poor considering it's in line-of-sight of the router. Anyway, I debated whether to shell out for triple set of Homeplug mains ethernet widgets but didn't want to spend £120 making all my wireless kit redundant. In the end I paid £40 for another wireless access point, which I've used in bridge mode to extend the network and I've connected the SB to it with an ethernet cable. Since then it's behaved impeccably. -- hifisteve hifisteve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4227 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24171 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I feel I'm getting a bit off topic of the original meaning of the thread, but here it comes. NWP Wrote: > If the databases are linked, either realtime or with periodic > import/exports, how are they linked? > > They only way I can think of that would be possible would be linking on > the field that contains the filepath. I don't know anything about the > internal workings of the slimserver db, but I assume there is a field > that contains the path to the file. The TrackStat plugin which stores its own persistent information inside the slimserver database uses the following information as links between the TrackStat tables and the slimserver tables: 1. Primary link is musicbrainz id's (slimserver will read the musicbrainz tags from the files and store them in its database) 2. If musicbrainz id's does not exist the filepath is used as link instead. This results that if you have musicbrainz id's in the tags of your files the links will survive a slimserver rescan. If you don't the links will survive a rescan as long as you don't move the file. There are also a third option for linking which might be possible to use, but I think it isn't supported by slimserver yet. This third option is the new PUID defined by musicdns.org. Regarding storage of information in tags, my opinion is that tags is useful for information that doesn't change often and isn't different for different users. I don't want software to change my music files continuously , the reason is that there is to easy that there is a bug in the software that completely destroys the music file. This means that tags should be used for stuff like: - unique ids (PUID's, musicbrainz id's) - artists, albums, track names - track lengths, track numbers Tags should on the other hand not be used for stuff like: - last played time - play counts - ratings (which will be different for different users) However, its still important that all this information is persistently stored somewhere since it can't be easily regenerated. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-trackstat) , 'SQLPlayList' (http://tinyurl.com/pptqy) and 'DynamicPlayList' (http://tinyurl.com/kfrgs) plugins) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24093 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

There is another tag that can be used as an ID tag. Each track made with a proper tagger knows the CD ID that it came from. The combination of CD ID and track number should make any track unique. I don't recall at the moment what the tag is called, but it's the thing that allows taggers to know what album your track came from even if the album name tag is gone. Oh, and I think Ceejay's analysis is correct - the reason we're tying ourselves in knots is that there are really several types of data being mushed together in the slimserver database these days (it just kinda growed), and without separating them by persistance and scope you can't have a meaningful discussion. -- Michaelwagner Michaelwagner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24093 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Fair enough. There has to be a process that assigns tag IDs for music that didn't come from CDs, like music that came from old LPs, speeches like you say, home recordings, etc. This is why I say there has to be a tagger that can handle the needs of Slmserver, but isn't part of Slimserver and can have a real user interface. -- Michaelwagner Michaelwagner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24093 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

An update on this- no good news yet. :( have now exchanged around 12 emails with draytek...still no nearer to resolution. I'm told it is with their 2nd/3rd line support engineers.. I have no idea how they can hope to resolve this without actually building this in their lab. What can cause the drops ?- it can only be: 1/ The SB3 responding badly to some 'dodgy' ethernet frames sent out from the router when the DSL is connected, or 2/ the draytek dropping the connection because of some memory or other bizarre firmware issue. I'm going to get a wireless sniffer onto the LAN to check if there are any malformed/spurious ethernet frames that are present when the dsl is connected (which the SB responds badly to). If there is nothing coming over the network then it has to be point 2. I am hoping I will see something coming out of the draytek as then I have some real substantive data to throw at draytek (rather than reporting the symptoms)...or even slimdevices could be part of the fix (if there is something odd that causes the wireless to drop - either the SB3 ignores it or the draytek does not send it!) Can anyone help me please. I was checking out Skins for my PC and selected one which I cannot now clear from my desktop. I did not catch the name of it, but it looks like an Apple I-Pod skin. White screen, Large Icons. There appears to be no way back to change this. I've clicked on all buttons, and nothing takes me back to settings. I have just downloaded newest version of Slim hoping it would default back to the original skin, but it hasn't. I have looked in all the folders in the Slimserver programme folder, but to be honest that is getting beyond my level of knowledge. Can anyone advise how to get back the settings to change the skin. Please someone get rid of this horrible skin which leads to stalemate. The Danish spelling would be "wienerbrød", while Swedish uses a different diacritical on the last vowel: "wienerbröt". The word traditionally refers to a somewhat specific sweetened bread rolled multiple times with butter before baking but usage has of course generalized a bit. Point well taken, though. [slim] PSP server skin ?
Hello everyone, this is my first post, i got my squeezebox this morning, at work. I'm wondering if anybody has started working on a PSP skin for SlimServer. I'm a programmer/graphic designer working on interfaces for cellphone games so i'm used to small screen sizes and UI stuff. I have many ideas to hack the hell out of it and implement special tricks like reading the analog pad to scroll lists faster (i'm a very good javascripter). If nothing has been done yet, i'll start working on it pretty soon. -- Lowrent Lowrent's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5665 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24205 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: A hardware bug? Digital output is always on!
This is a software feature and will be changed. What you consider a bug is a benefit for others, since having the output on at all times helps to maintain sync with the receiver in situations where you would not want to drop the carrier, eg to avoid a few seconds of "lock time" lag. This was an issue with SB1, where we had limited control over the s/pdif and could not force it to be on continuously. The plan is to make this behavior configurable. By the way, SB3 is the only device I'm aware of to feature a completely "soft" (as opposed to silicon) s/pdif transmitter, which allows us to tweak it however we want. It's just a matter of prioritizing this improvement. Please feel free to vote or add additional comments to the bug if you have anything to add. -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24204 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

To my knowledge, no. But, you might start by looking at the Nokia770 skin in slimserver 6.5, which is heavily javascripted and built for a handheld landscape display. It has both coax SPDIF and Toslink optical inputs, with no physical switch, and gives priority to the coax connection. One workaround may be to use coax for the transport and Toslink for the Squeezebox. However, if the transport behaves similarly, by always sending a valid digital signal, then you're left to turn off the transport to play the Squeezebox. By the looks of request #1397, you'd be left to turn off the Squeezebox to allow the transport to play, so it's six of one, half dozen of the other. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24204 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I thought it was about the cost. If you call them cables or phono cables or RCA cables it refers to wires that you wouldn't want to spend too much money on. Ah, it hadn't ocurred to me that "set" in that context meant, well, "set". Makes perfect sense now. That's one of those things that went from making intuitive sense to just being arbitrary. I'm impressed with the effort and the concept of the 770, but it's a far from perfect device. Yeah, it doesn't have built in wireless, so you have to stick in a PCMCIA card. One thing that annoys me about it is the lack of a keyboard port. [slim] No FF or REW in native files!
I've started ripping cds in FLAC, because its native to the SB3. Accordingly, my understanding is that it should allow ff and rew inside the song, where formats that must be converted (for example apple lossless etc.) do not offer this. Unfortunately I am not able to ff and rew within each song. I can only skip to the beginning of the song (for rew) or skip to the next song (for ff). For more advanced playlist creation/management I'd recommend you use a separate music management program. However, you can do what you're requesting more efficiently than you might think if you use the fishbone skin. In fishbone you can delete an entire album from the playlist. Then begin playing the track that you want to insert your album *after*, and use the "play next" feature of the skin to insert the desired album. -- azinck3 azinck3's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3967 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24212 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Anyone else hearing blips of crud in a stream
Sorry for the title - can't think of a way to say it in one line. I'm running latest 6.3 and an SB3. But this is not a new issue. When I'm playing a live stream, and I think more often soon after its started after playing something else, I hear a very short segment which is clearly out of place. For example, a spoken word fragment in the middle of an instrumental passage. The fragments are quite short, and when it happens there will often be several fragments different from each other. In implementation terms, it sounds like what I'd expect if a stale buffer fragment was either played by the SB3 or sent to it by the server. I can't reproduce this. I can't prove its not in the source stream. So I'm trying to find out if others are experiencing this. CeeJay's right in spirit, but separate linked databases scare me as a great source of problems. A single database extended on demand with an externally described schema can be done, but it's not particularly easy. Hence our current state. I'd like to see a persistent database with support for useful information like ratings, and a separate database from the tags might be the right way to get that. Seems the LazySearch and other plugins could really benefit from a persistent database, and the performance gains from more infrequent scanning are hard to argue with. -- "I spent all me tin with the ladies drinking gin,So across the Western ocean I must wander" -- traditional ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Going back to the original subject of this thread regarding capitalization, I do have a problem with SlimServer ignoring what I so-purposefully put in the tags. I'm trying to maintain album and track names as faithfully as possible to how they are listed on the album itself, and this includes those often-annoying stylistic capitalizations (or lack thereof) that various artists go through. Personally I find it rather silly, but the artists didn't put it on there by chance, it was for a definite reason. Therefore for the sake of accuracy I have tried to preserve these affectations in tags. See here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=107576&postcount=15 My problem is that SlimServer is doing exactly what the OP wishes it to do - it is case -insensitive- in my case, listing tracks and albums that should be attributable to "The Smashing Pumpkins" with "smashing pumpkins". I wish it wouldn't! This is not accurate. It's not the end of the world, it just looks kind of silly and defeats the purpose of maintaining accuracy with capitalization and the way artists sometimes subtly change their names over the years. So I really would rather SlimServer not force case sensitivity and keeps things exactly as they are in the tags. Unlike the OP, my tags are about as accurate as I can make them yet SlimServer sometimes ignores that. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24093 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The question is really, though, whether "typographic" changes are Artist Intent for the music or just for cover art. I have tons of tracks that "should" be in allcaps if I went by cover art That would be painful to read. In most cases, I don't think the band is changing their name, just their logo. Unless I want to try to guess the font (and figure out how to load it into the SB...) used by each artist, it's best to just stick to plain ascii/latin1/utf as the case may be. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24093 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Unlike the OP, my tags > are about as accurate as I can make them yet SlimServer sometimes > ignores that. There's a difference between what is _displayed_ and what is _used_ for most operations, such as searching and sorting. What is displayed is neither here nor there - SlimServer doesn't use the string for anything other than eye candy. The Beatles Beatles THE BEATLES the beatles will all be recognized as the same artist, as most people would want. The string that gets stored for sorting and searching purposes is simply "BEATLES". All caps, and assuming you're using the default of removing leading common articles, with "The" removed. If you were to use all four of those variations on the artist name in your tags, it would be a crap shoot as to which will end up being the displayed string. I believe it's currently "last one in", meaning that the display string is whatever the artist tag is set to in the track that SlimServer happens to scan last. If you're seeing "smashing pumpkins" displayed, it's a pretty good bet (I'd say near 100% certain) that you've tagged at least one track with that exact string, including that particular capitalization. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24093 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Player does not play tracks in order
OK, I don't use godfather myself but I know others do. As for that annoying behaviour of mp3tag - its very easy to fix: it remembers the last directory you were looking at when it next starts up, so all you have to do is point it at a single CD directory, say, before you close it down. I rarely use it for the whole music library at a time anyway. Two things to try: 1 - use a different browse method, in case there is something odd happening with browse by artwork. Browse by album instead and see what happens. You should be able to browse to the album, select "play", and get all the tracks loaded up in the right order. 2 - check that you don't have both ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags in your file - slimserver really doesn't like this. I don't know how you do this in The godfather, but in mp3tag you: - from the menu, View - Customise columns - click the star button in the middle of the dialog box to add a "new configuration" - Enter "Tags" in the Name box and "%_tag%" in the Value box - OK If it says "ID3v1 ID3v2" for the files in question then you have two (possibly conflicting) sets of tags. In the tools - Options dialog you will find an option to delete one of them.
