Tim, are you thinking about the MicroB browser or something different?
If so, it's been available (for testing and development) for a few
months. Some of the features (non-SB related admittedly) look pretty
good, especially the improved RSS handling.

Sorry, to quote one of the characters out of Little Britain, (I don't
know if that has crossed the Atlantic yet) I got myself into a bit of a
kerfuffle!

I have two links - one on the desktop which loads the skin I've edited
(only minor, but it means they don't get overwritten on a point release
without me realising it), and another one in the favorites menu to load
the unmolested skin.

I was looking at the browser loaded from favorites and not the desktop.
It has fixed those onchange issues you have open in bugzilla for the
N800 though...

I couldn't vind a way to look at the headers, do tell.

okay, that's great news.

If all else runs fine, I may end up making a fix for the player
chooser list bug by telling N800 users to upgrade to OS2008.

could you check this bug as well and see if it now works?
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5295

the only thing I don't know about is if these bugs are occuring in
OS2006 (i.e., the OS for the 770). I don't have a 770, so I'd need
someone with a 770, multiple players, and running the latest SC7.0 to
test for me. That's probably asking too much...

I don't know how far OS2008 is, but the browser install is fairly
painless. The only thing that is not on the menu is to switch back to
opera rendering. I was initially confused by this article:

I'll try to break it over the next couple of days and post any
discoveries back here. I'm a happy camper as I was about to downgrade
back to 6.5, and now it appears I don't have to.

Is the search function broken too?

Re: [slim] Nokia 770

2007-08-08 Thread jblotz

I picked up a N770 for $130 from Buy.com. No charge for shipping and it
arrived 3 - 4 days sooner than expected. It has the 2006OS, so I have
not tried to update anything. I probably won't.

I have played with it for a few days and I really, really like surfing
with it. The web experience is better than I expected. I would like to
be able to use youtube but I knew it wasn't capable of that before I
bought it. Ben's skin is really slick and again, quicker than I
expected. I can't get the brouse album art to work. Any suggestions?

Has anyone had problems turning the N770 on? The power button doesn't
want to work sometimes. Is mine defective or is this the nature of the
beast? I suspect it's a software thing because I have never had trouble
turning it off.

Can anyone point me to step by step instructions to stream music to the
N770? I was hoping I could access my slimserver music.

The power button got me until I read the docs...

You need to hold it on for a couple seconds for it to recognize it as a
button press instead of an oops.

Turning it off isn't as picky (sort of): a short button press brings up
the menu for various things (key/screen lock, PIN lock, Offline mode, or
really off) and a longer button press turns it off without the question.

As long as you turn off the wifi and aren't playing movies the battery

have a spare (or even better, would charge via USB), but other than
that, it is great.

Well, the 770 is end-of-life, the current prices are to clear out
warehouses (which is odd: since for a long time it was really hard to
get ahold of ... they never seemed to have any in stock).

It is not only a great remote for Slimserver, I carry it for an
emergency ssh host in case I need to log in to fix something at work.
Between the various free international Wifi providers, I should be able
to get online anywhere. (Default, Linksys and Buffalo are all
great free wifi ISP's here :P)

Re: [slim] Nokia 770

2007-07-31 Thread oreillymj

I have the N800. Having never used or seen an N770, I can't say how much
faster the newer device is.

Ben's skin is excellent. There are a couple of minor improvements that
would be nice, but it does an excellent job.

The main problem with using the Nxxx as a remote replacement is the
need to leave it on for an extended period so that it's available when
required.
Whereas the Slim Remote is an always-on, instant device, the startup
time of the Nokia is about 1 minute with another minute required to
start the browser, load the home page. none of this is anything Ben can
fix

Outside of use as a remote replacement, the web browser is nice. I
haven't used it for Skype or Google talk. Canola looks nice also.

There's lots of other Linux derived freeware, but installation can be
difficult for a non Linux expert. I've tried to install several apps
that have failed due to a library being missing, with no mention of how
to get/install the required file.

However the OS does provide an interface for installing apps that have
been officially blessed by Nokia.

when I'm in eye-shot of the SB, I prefer to use the IR remote, but when
I am outside, listening to tunes on my back patio, the N770 definitley
does the job. For some reason I still have not figured out, it works
slower on some skins than on others. When using the default skin, its
not too bad, with my music reacting about 0.5 seconds after I click a
button. I got it for $130 from Buy.com and have been happy (although
not thrilled) I got it.

I'm really pleased with mine. It's much better to browse on than the
remote (the limited SB screen is a pain for me - not enough characters
and/or I have to squint!). Plus it's great for just browsing the
internet - the wife likes it so much we might get another!

It used to sell for £250 in the UK ($500), and at that price the
reviews are justified, but IMO at $130 you really can't go wrong.

One of my good friends from college used this statement to describe a
date he'd gone on: well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some
of that. I kind of think the Nokia experience is similar.

It offers some really nice improvements over using the IR remote (list
browsing and cover art are prime examples), but in some other cases
(having to wait to connect to wifi, browser delays) it doesn't make the
cut.

The Nokia tablet is pretty whiz bang cool for some other things though
too, so don't discount that. I really love using mine for a personal
media player on flights.

Also, Canola is fantastic for streaming media directly to the tablet.

cheers,

Ok, I have the same problem as others(I think)where using the thumbpad

by the upper and lower menu bars. I just picked up my Nokia 770 from

Search should definitely work (and I just confirmed it does work on
mine). What version of Slimserver are you using?

Don't take this the wrong way, but are you sure you're hitting the
search button and not the round dot underneath it?

One of these days I'm going to rework some of the look-feel of the
search page. It's not bad now, but could be improved upon.

I'm using trunk from yesterday:
SlimServer_trunk_v2007-07-17.noarch.rpm

SlimServer Version: 7.0a1 - 12394 - Linux - EN - iso-8859-1
Server IP address: 192.168.1.3
Perl Version: 5.8.8 x86_64-linux-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.18

Nokia 770 OS 2006 edition Version 3.2006.49-2

Yes, I'm clicking button :-) I can change the dots by clicking songs,
artists or albums buttons. But clicking clear doesn't clear the text
area and clicking search doesn't work. They work ok if I load the 770
skin in IE or Firefox.

Okay, so the original intention here was that IE users pointing their
browser to Nokia770 would get redirected to Touch, as Nokia770's css
bruises IE's fragile consciousness.

BUT, some versions of the Nokia Opera browser send out a user agent
string that spoofs as IE (this is a common Opera trick), therefore
redirecting people actually using a 770 or 800 to Touch, which is no
good.

My argument here, take it or leave it, is that the first priority of
the Nokia770 skin is to support the people using the Nokia, and a
widget to push IE users to Touch is second priority.

Therefore, what do you think about backing out the user agent redirect
altogether? The problem I see arising is that even if we cover all the
current Nokia user agent strings, new versions of Opera on the Nokia
tablet may again change the user agent string to more closely resemble
IE, thus breaking this again.

I've always been part of the school that says IE users who keep
expecting everything to work perfectly at all times should be smacked.
However, a more realistic approach would indeed be to ignore that
problem. If it was that simple, then the three bugs should have been
closed off as wontfix. They were not, so would probably have to be
reopened pending some sort of official stance that says 'you will just
have to live with it'.

What are the odds that the nokia version of opera will change the agent
string to match IE entirely, as opposed to including IE with
compatible and opera?

NigelMSB;214226 Wrote:
Why not check for Maemo and for Tablet browser? It's unlikely that

I'm going to read into the minds of the folks putting together the
Nokia Opera browser-- my guess is that one of the big complaints that
they get from users is that they get an error message saying they can't
browse (insert critical-to-user website address here) because (insert
critical-to-user website address here) parses the user agent string and
dumps an error if it's not IE. Different sites employ different methods
of parsing the user agent string, thus the best thing for Nokia Opera
to do is spoof as IE as closely as possible. At least, that's what I'd
do.

IMO, it seems like the Maemo Opera user agent string is a moving
target, so this is an uphill battle with possible breaks down the
line.

I'm still of the opinion that IE users are out of luck if they point
their browser to Nokia770/ skin, and its not a necessary function of
slimserver to redirect to Touch in these situations. It's a noble idea,
but if it incorrectly redirects (some) Nokia users, I'm not for it.

As for an official stance of not supporting IE on the Nokia770/ skin,
I'm pretty sure that is the case. There's a dev forum thread from last
year I could dig up that discusses just that...

As an alternative, I'm going to try to post to a Maemo forum sometime
today and ask if there's any part of the user agent string that I can
absolutely count on not to go away that identifies the browser as
coming from the Maemo browser (much as Nigel has suggested).

cheers,
#!/ben

Personally I think you should ditch the the browser check at it seems to
be redirecting me to touch also. Browser and platform info:

Browser = Opera
Full version string = 4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; X11; Linux armv6l; U)
Full User Agent string = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; X11; Linux

The User Agent string you posted indicates that the browser within the
N770 is being detected as Internet Explorer when, in fact, it is Opera.
Due to problems w/ IE handling the Nokia770 skin the current default
action (when SlimServer sees IE and the Nokia770 skin) is to switch to
Touch. This is a bug and not something you set up incorrectly--

Nigel and kdf are working on this currently and Nigel has confirmed a

About 15mins after my post, I finally got the update to work, but it was
through trial and error. The timing has to be fairly perfect for the
update to work.

I understand that flashing the device is risky, but an update from
utility that loads an image from the SD card would be a good option for
both Windows users and greatly simplify the life of Linux users.

The PSP's update method works really well.

Can anyone with an N800 tell me if they managed to do a firmware upgrade
using the Windows app supplied by Nokia.

I've tried it on both my PC Laptop and neither are able to detect the
N800 even though Windows explorer sees the device and mounts 2
additional drives.
The software just sits there saying Searching
before timing out.

It's pretty annoying. Anyone know of a manual way to do the update

If windows is mounting the device's cards as drives you aren't in the
right mode for the upgrade.

Make sure to follow the directions on the Windows wizard precisely...it
goes something like launch wizard, connect usb cable, *then* power on
the 800 while holding home key...etc.. If you just connect the 800
while it's already booted to the OS the upgrade will not work.

In my experience, windows upgrader works just peachy.

good luck,

what should display is a bunch of text to the browser, but I'm also

I'm completely baffled right now, so any input from someone else would

It seems fine to me: my only guess is that the Nokia has much worse
802.11g networking than the SB in the same room... I usually see around
70% signal on the SB and around 30% on the Nokia. It could be that the
connection is more marginal and causing retransmits.

(even at 30% it works fine, page loads on all sites are a bit slow
sometimes, but i cant blame the skin for google news loading slowly.)

The first thing I'd try is a different browser than IE. Nokia770 was
specifically built with the 770's opera browser in mind, and I know it
to also work excellent in Firefox. IE is a notoriously lousy browser
that I don't spend a lot (well, any) time on, and it wouldn't be the
first time something didn't work in IE that worked everywhere else.
Firefox and Opera are both free, so trying it can't hurt...

The other thing I might try is going to Server Settings-Security-CSRF
Protection Level and setting it to None, and see if that does
anything.

What slimserver version are you running? Would you consider updating to
the most recent 6.5 nightly build?

Sorry, I'm kind of clutching at straws, because everything is very
responsive on my system (Slimserver 6.5.2 on Ubuntu).

quickly (0.5 or 1 second...). But when I set SS to the N770 Skin, it

this the way it will work when I get the N770? Thanks for any

does old laptop = old browser?

responsiveness should be just the opposite, IMO. You should see a
performance *improvement* with N770 skin. And it absolutely shouldn't
take 5 to 10 seconds for a song skip. Something odd is afoot there.

Bookmark plugin and he uses Slim::Player::Source::gototime($client,

Skins can't easily run custom code in perl. But in SlimServer 7 there will
be access to the the full command set available in the CLI through a
JSON/RPC interface. It should then be possible to implement this with some
javascripting. Ben could probably add this feature to his growing list ;-)

Re: [slim] Nokia 770/Slim Server Skin

2007-07-03 Thread gharris999

I've had good luck running the svn code on linux lately. Since you
already have slimserver installed, you ought to be able to install and
run the 6.5x branch pretty easily. This will give you all the latest
cool stuff in the 770 skin.

Log in as root. Perform these steps:

Code:

  service slimserver stop
  mkdir /usr/local/slimserver65
  svn co http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/slim/branches/6.5/
/usr/local/slimserver65
  chown -R slimserver:slimserver /usr/local/slimserver65
  cp /etc/slimserver.conf /etc/slimserver.conf.org
  cp /etc/sysconfig/slimserver /etc/sysconfig/slimserver.org

Now edit the /etc/sysconfig/slimserver file so that it reads:

Code:

  # Edit this to suit your setup
  SLIMSERVER_USER=slimserver
  SLIMSERVER_HOME=/usr/local/slimserver65/server
  SLIMSERVER_CFG=/etc/slimserver.conf
  SLIMSERVER_LOG=/var/log/slimserver
  SLIMSERVER_ARGS=--daemon --prefsfile=$SLIMSERVER_CFG
--logdir=$SLIMSERVER_LOG

Also, edit your /etc/slimserver.conf file and replace any references to
/usr/local/slimserver with /usr/local/slimserver65.

Now, when you execute a service slimserver start you should be
running the 6.5x branch code. You'll need to reconfigure all your
settings and rescan your music library, of course.

Any time you want to freshen up the 6.5x code with the latest svn, do
the following:

Code:

  service slimserver stop
  svn up /usr/local/slimserver65
  chown -R slimserver:slimserver /usr/local/slimserver65
  service slimserver start

To my mind, that is the real advantage of using the svn code: the
ability to apply any slimserver bug fixes and new features with a
couple of commands that can be put in a shell script.

If you don't like what you see with this 6.5x code, you can go back to
your original setup by simply doing this:

Code:

  service slimserver stop
  cp /etc/sysconfig/slimserver.org /etc/sysconfig/slimserver
  cp /etc/slimserver.conf.org /etc/slimserver.conf
  service slimserver start

Caveat: I've really only run slimserver on Fedora, and really only with
the trunk code, not the 65 branch, so I don't know if any of these
details will need to change if you use a different distro. I suppose,
also, that you may have to update your version of perl and run
/usr/local/slimserver65/server/Bin/build-perl-modules.pl to get the
latest perl packages for the 6.5x code.

I have a feature request: on the Now Playing status page: how about a

Bookmark plugin and he uses Slim::Player::Source::gototime($client,

This would be a handy feature for me for use with audio books. I end up
with single mp3s 7 or more hours long and the standard slimserver ff and
rw controls don't cut it in terms of trying to get back to a point, say
3 hours in, in a file. The iPod has a good interface for this purpose.
I wish slimserver had one too.

Ben, New 770 via woot owner. Your 770skin made me buy the 770!

I have been struggling to make play.this.gif (and add.gif) in

buttons on the 770 with my finger. Any normal html changes (width=

could create a new larger icon, but wanted to try to leave the files
clean and not add new icons.

Thoughts?

Re: [slim] Nokia 770 $129 on woot.com now!

2007-07-01 Thread Dave Dewey
Quoting digihead ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):

Hello. New to the forum here. First post.

I recently purchased the Infrant NAS NV+ Squeezebox package deal and a
 Nokia770 on the woot.com deal.

When I try to navigate to my NAS, via http://serverip:9900/nokia770/ I
get a message 'cannot connect to remote server'

Try:

http://serverip:9000/nokia770/

The port number should be 9000, not 9900, unless you changed it in
the slimserver configuration.

Hi Ben. I've been away on business trying to earn enough money to buy
another gadget.

Re your questions above:

1. SlimServer Version: 6.5.2 - 12047 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252

2. The former! Using full-screen option on my N800, the lower dark
grey tool bar of your skin (showing 19247 songs, 1423 artists, 1561
albums space About Server Settings Player Settings remains fixed
over the bottom of the second row of icons in your skin. It actually
obscures the text label of the icons. Make sense?

My observation is that this occurred after upgrade of the OS on the
N800. It was not a problem before. Currently using the latest
download from Nokia: Internet Tablet OS 2007 edition Version:
3.2007.10-7

Thanks for continued work on the skin!

Re: [slim] Nokia 770 $129 on woot.com now!

2007-06-30 Thread washburn

The nokia 770 *can* show both frames of the usual slimserver skins; I
guess that before I just didn't give it time to refresh enough to
display properly.

However the normal skins are sort of small for the Nokia. It'd be nice
if there were a normal skin that just used a somewhat larger font.

Re: [slim] Nokia 770 $129 on woot.com now!

2007-06-29 Thread washburn

The 770 seems to work ok. I attached the case to the wall, so it would
be like a control panel.

Still, I'm a little disappointed; for one thing, the screen won't show
both the frames (list of albums etc. plus current playlist) that are
needed for most slimserver interfaces.

I also have a suggestion for the Nokia 770 interface---it would be nice
if the Now Playing screen would show more items in the playlist,
rather than just three. Actually, I really wish that one could view a
list of artists/albums/songs, and the current playlist, side by side,
but maybe that's not possible.

Anyway, I'm still playing with the 770, and I definitely appreciate the
effort that went into the 770 skin, even if I imagined it would more
more like a typical slimserver skin.

2007-06-25 Thread jclyle

i answered my own question.. this is from their site

Will I receive customer support like I'm used to?
No. Well, not really. If you buy something you don't end up liking or
you have what marketing people call buyer's remorse, sell it on eBay.
It's likely you'll make money doing this and save everyone a hassle. If
the item doesn't work, find out what you're doing wrong. Yes, we know
you think the item is bad, but it's probably your fault. Google your
problem, or come back to that product discussion in our community and
ask other people if they know. Try to call the manufacturer and ask if
they know. If you give up and must return it to us, then follow on to
the next FAQ entry.
How do I return a defective product?
Unless we specifically tell you not to, call the manufacturer of the
product you bought. You will likely get a replacement of a new model or
better item from them. If we still haven't dissuaded you, email
[EMAIL PROTECTED] with your woot order number, the name of the product you
are returning, and the detailed problem with the item. We will respond
with return authorization by the next business day. Because we aren't
likely to have a replacement in stock, you should be prepared for a
refund-only option if that's all we can do. Know that return freight
will be at your expense. Again, you will probably get a better deal
from the manufacturer, or whoever else handling customer service for
that product.

guessing these are preprocessing instructions for the html server?

My goal for the PSP isn't to replicate all the web interface
functionality, but just the player controls. If there is more you'd
like to see in the interface let me know why you'd want the
functionality on the PSP and I'll consider adding it.
