I have two links - one on the desktop which loads the skin I've edited (only minor, but it means they don't get overwritten on a point release without me realising it), and another one in the favorites menu to load the unmolested skin. I was looking at the browser loaded from favorites and not the desktop. It has fixed those onchange issues you have open in bugzilla for the N800 though... Re: [slim] Nokia 770
I picked up a N770 for $130 from Buy.com. No charge for shipping and it arrived 3 - 4 days sooner than expected. It has the 2006OS, so I have not tried to update anything. I probably won't. I have played with it for a few days and I really, really like surfing with it. The web experience is better than I expected. I would like to be able to use youtube but I knew it wasn't capable of that before I bought it. Ben's skin is really slick and again, quicker than I expected. I can't get the brouse album art to work. Any suggestions? Has anyone had problems turning the N770 on? The power button doesn't want to work sometimes. Is mine defective or is this the nature of the beast? I suspect it's a software thing because I have never had trouble turning it off. Can anyone point me to step by step instructions to stream music to the N770? I was hoping I could access my slimserver music. -- jblotz jblotz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37234 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Nokia 770
The power button got me until I read the docs... You need to hold it on for a couple seconds for it to recognize it as a button press instead of an oops. Turning it off isn't as picky (sort of): a short button press brings up the menu for various things (key/screen lock, PIN lock, Offline mode, or really off) and a longer button press turns it off without the question. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37234 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Nokia 770
I have the N800. Having never used or seen an N770, I can't say how much faster the newer device is. Ben's skin is excellent. There are a couple of minor improvements that would be nice, but it does an excellent job. The main problem with using the Nxxx as a remote replacement is the need to leave it on for an extended period so that it's available when required. Whereas the Slim Remote is an always-on, instant device, the startup time of the Nokia is about 1 minute with another minute required to start the browser, load the home page. none of this is anything Ben can fix Outside of use as a remote replacement, the web browser is nice. I haven't used it for Skype or Google talk. Canola looks nice also. There's lots of other Linux derived freeware, but installation can be difficult for a non Linux expert. I've tried to install several apps that have failed due to a library being missing, with no mention of how to get/install the required file. However the OS does provide an interface for installing apps that have been officially blessed by Nokia. -- oreillymj oreillymj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=699 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37234 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

when I'm in eye-shot of the SB, I prefer to use the IR remote, but when I am outside, listening to tunes on my back patio, the N770 definitley does the job. For some reason I still have not figured out, it works slower on some skins than on others. When using the default skin, its not too bad, with my music reacting about 0.5 seconds after I click a button. I'm really pleased with mine. It's much better to browse on than the remote (the limited SB screen is a pain for me - not enough characters and/or I have to squint!). Plus it's great for just browsing the internet - the wife likes it so much we might get another! One of my good friends from college used this statement to describe a date he'd gone on: well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that. I kind of think the Nokia experience is similar. It offers some really nice improvements over using the IR remote (list browsing and cover art are prime examples), but in some other cases (having to wait to connect to wifi, browser delays) it doesn't make the cut. The Nokia tablet is pretty whiz bang cool for some other things though too, so don't discount that. I really love using mine for a personal media player on flights. So, anything after 12149 should be fine for your 770. Okay, so the original intention here was that IE users pointing their browser to Nokia770 would get redirected to Touch, as Nokia770's css bruises IE's fragile consciousness. BUT, some versions of the Nokia Opera browser send out a user agent string that spoofs as IE (this is a common Opera trick), therefore redirecting people actually using a 770 or 800 to Touch, which is no good. My argument here, take it or leave it, is that the first priority of the Nokia770 skin is to support the people using the Nokia, and a widget to push IE users to Touch is second priority. Therefore, what do you think about backing out the user agent redirect altogether? The problem I see arising is that even if we cover all the current Nokia user agent strings, new versions of Opera on the Nokia tablet may again change the user agent string to more closely resemble IE, thus breaking this again. cheers, #!/ben -- bklaas the Nokia770 skin guy http://www.last.fm/user/bklaas/ bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19369 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I've always been part of the school that says IE users who keep expecting everything to work perfectly at all times should be smacked. However, a more realistic approach would indeed be to ignore that problem. If it was that simple, then the three bugs should have been closed off as wontfix. They were not, so would probably have to be reopened pending some sort of official stance that says 'you will just have to live with it'. It's unlikely that Microsoft will change to using those. I'm going to read into the minds of the folks putting together the Nokia Opera browser-- my guess is that one of the big complaints that they get from users is that they get an error message saying they can't browse (insert critical-to-user website address here) because (insert critical-to-user website address here) parses the user agent string and dumps an error if it's not IE. Different sites employ different methods of parsing the user agent string, thus the best thing for Nokia Opera to do is spoof as IE as closely as possible. At least, that's what I'd do. IMO, it seems like the Maemo Opera user agent string is a moving target, so this is an uphill battle with possible breaks down the line. I'm still of the opinion that IE users are out of luck if they point their browser to Nokia770/ skin, and its not a necessary function of slimserver to redirect to Touch in these situations. It's a noble idea, but if it incorrectly redirects (some) Nokia users, I'm not for it. As for an official stance of not supporting IE on the Nokia770/ skin, I'm pretty sure that is the case. There's a dev forum thread from last year I could dig up that discusses just that... As an alternative, I'm going to try to post to a Maemo forum sometime today and ask if there's any part of the user agent string that I can absolutely count on not to go away that identifies the browser as coming from the Maemo browser (much as Nigel has suggested). cheers, #!/ben -- bklaas the Nokia770 skin guy http://www.last.fm/user/bklaas/ bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19369 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Nokia 770/Slim Server Skin
I've had good luck running the svn code on linux lately. Since you already have slimserver installed, you ought to be able to install and run the 6.5x branch pretty easily. This will give you all the latest cool stuff in the 770 skin. Log in as root. Perform these steps: Code: service slimserver stop mkdir /usr/local/slimserver65 svn co http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/slim/branches/6.5/ /usr/local/slimserver65 chown -R slimserver:slimserver /usr/local/slimserver65 cp /etc/slimserver.conf /etc/slimserver.conf.org cp /etc/sysconfig/slimserver /etc/sysconfig/slimserver.org Now edit the /etc/sysconfig/slimserver file so that it reads: Code: # Edit this to suit your setup SLIMSERVER_USER=slimserver SLIMSERVER_HOME=/usr/local/slimserver65/server SLIMSERVER_CFG=/etc/slimserver.conf SLIMSERVER_LOG=/var/log/slimserver SLIMSERVER_ARGS=--daemon --prefsfile=$SLIMSERVER_CFG --logdir=$SLIMSERVER_LOG Also, edit your /etc/slimserver.conf file and replace any references to /usr/local/slimserver with /usr/local/slimserver65. Now, when you execute a service slimserver start you should be running the 6.5x branch code. You'll need to reconfigure all your settings and rescan your music library, of course. Any time you want to freshen up the 6.5x code with the latest svn, do the following: Code: service slimserver stop svn up /usr/local/slimserver65 chown -R slimserver:slimserver /usr/local/slimserver65 service slimserver start To my mind, that is the real advantage of using the svn code: the ability to apply any slimserver bug fixes and new features with a couple of commands that can be put in a shell script. If you don't like what you see with this 6.5x code, you can go back to your original setup by simply doing this: Code: service slimserver stop cp /etc/sysconfig/slimserver.org /etc/sysconfig/slimserver cp /etc/slimserver.conf.org /etc/slimserver.conf service slimserver start Caveat: I've really only run slimserver on Fedora, and really only with the trunk code, not the 65 branch, so I don't know if any of these details will need to change if you use a different distro. I suppose, also, that you may have to update your version of perl and run /usr/local/slimserver65/server/Bin/build-perl-modules.pl to get the latest perl packages for the 6.5x code. -- gharris999 gharris999's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=115 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36560 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Nokia 770 $129 on woot.com now!
The 770 seems to work ok. I attached the case to the wall, so it would be like a control panel. Still, I'm a little disappointed; for one thing, the screen won't show both the frames (list of albums etc. plus current playlist) that are needed for most slimserver interfaces. I also have a suggestion for the Nokia 770 interface---it would be nice if the Now Playing screen would show more items in the playlist, rather than just three. Actually, I really wish that one could view a list of artists/albums/songs, and the current playlist, side by side, but maybe that's not possible. Anyway, I'm still playing with the 770, and I definitely appreciate the effort that went into the 770 skin, even if I imagined it would more more like a typical slimserver skin. -- washburn washburn's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=507 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36370 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

i answered my own question.. this is from their site Will I receive customer support like I'm used to? No. Well, not really. If you buy something you don't end up liking or you have what marketing people call buyer's remorse, sell it on eBay. It's likely you'll make money doing this and save everyone a hassle. If the item doesn't work, find out what you're doing wrong. Yes, we know you think the item is bad, but it's probably your fault. Google your problem, or come back to that product discussion in our community and ask other people if they know. Try to call the manufacturer and ask if they know. If you give up and must return it to us, then follow on to the next FAQ entry. How do I return a defective product? Unless we specifically tell you not to, call the manufacturer of the product you bought. You will likely get a replacement of a new model or better item from them. If we still haven't dissuaded you, email [EMAIL PROTECTED] with your woot order number, the name of the product you are returning, and the detailed problem with the item. We will respond with return authorization by the next business day. Because we aren't likely to have a replacement in stock, you should be prepared for a refund-only option if that's all we can do. Know that return freight will be at your expense. Again, you will probably get a better deal from the manufacturer, or whoever else handling customer service for that product. -- jclyle jclyle's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11752 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36370 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

A couple suggestions to those Woot!ing the 770 today: the first thing you should do is install the most current 770 OS image available. who knows what version the Woot! 770s will come with, and a lot of stuff got fixed between initial release and what's current today. secondly, install the streaming media manager Canola. http://openbossa.indt.org/canola/ for using my skin, make sure you have javascript enabled in the browser, view the skin in full-screen mode (button on the top of the device toggles full-screen mode), and make sure the browser settings are to not show the toolbar in full-screen mode. good luck woot!ers, #!/ben -- bklaas the Nokia770 skin guy http://www.last.fm/user/bklaas/ bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36370 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Nokia 770 $129 on woot.com now!
Hey Ben: thanks for your great addition to the slimserver arsenal. You say: make sure the browser settings are to not show the toolbar in full-screen mode. How do I do that on my N800? Ever since my update of the OS on the N800, (all of which went fine), the toolbar at the bottom of the 770 skin screen floats over the rest of the window (scrolls up and down as I move the screen around with my finger or pen). I must have solved this problem before, but it is pesky now. Have I described it adequately? -- utowana utowana's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4204 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36370 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Can you describe this a little further, please? 1. what version of slimserver are you using, and what OS does slimserver run on? 2. when you say that the toolbar floats over the rest of the window, are you talking about something that's part of the skin (i.e., the bar that has links for server settings, player settings, etc.) or the toolbar for the browser itself? If you mean the former, that's a bug I need to look at. The latter you can change in the browser settings under the View-toolbars-(uncheck) full-screen option (or something like that). cheers, #!/ben -- bklaas the Nokia770 skin guy http://www.last.fm/user/bklaas/ bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36370 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Nokia 770 $129 on woot.com now!
Darn them sales! I keep Woot.com open in a tab and when I spotted the 770 I emailed the LUG list and didn't splurge (yet). Tried to convince myself I didn't need it but they were still available 20 hours later. I wish they would have sold out. At least I only got one. For those regretting not getting one, they'll be on Ebay in droves with buyers finding they can't get more than $150 because too many are being offered. -- notanatheist notanatheist's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2642 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36370 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Nokia 770 screenshot?
Anyone have a link to screenshots for the Nokia 770 skin they can post for me? The skin doesn't come up correctly on IE5/6 or the sony PSP. In MSIE use Touch skin instead. It's basically the same, except it's not optimized to the Nokia's screen size. Michael ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Maybe my system is whacked or I'm expecting something that isn't there but I only get two buttons at the top - play and pause. Are there supposed to be ff, rew, stop, volume, etc? Re: [slim] Nokia 770 screenshot?
OK, I'm looking at the html for the nokia and it would appear there is only a play and pause button at the top. I'm by no means an html expert but I am a programmer and it would appear I have something to learn about slim's html. Never seen the [% %] constructs in html before. I'm guessing these are preprocessing instructions for the html server? My goal for the PSP isn't to replicate all the web interface functionality, but just the player controls. If there is more you'd like to see in the interface let me know why you'd want the functionality on the PSP and I'll consider adding it. Re: [slim] Nokia 770 or other handheld to controll slimserver
i'm also interested in a tablet or other handheld device as a 'remote' but there is one thing i dont understand: i would NOT want it to actually run Slimserver. My slimserver is in the closet on a ReadyNAS+. The only PC software I have ever used to start-stop music is the .html browser-based application Slimserver. What software would i run on my 'tablet' that would 'connect' to Slimserver and tell it what to do? how does this handshake actually work? is this documented somewhere (not developer section, I'm not an engineer).
