This looks like a nice pieces of software, but it is only needed if
you're feeding the KAT500 less than 10-20W (that is, KX3 barefoot). The
KAT500 senses operating frequency from RF, but it needs about that level
to do so.

Another good reason for using this band decoder is to automatically
switch antennas or bandpass filters.

Yes Bill, I believe that is correct but I want it to band follow so that the
solution will be set to the last correct solution for the current frequency
when only receiving. It follows the K3/KPA500 and the the question is “how do
I implement this with the KX3?

[Elecraft] KAT500 with KX3

2016-05-19 Thread Michael Blake
Which data connection(s) do I use to control the band/frequency settings on the
KAT500 when the transceiver is a KX3? The amplifier is a low drive modified
ALS-600 which seems like a straight forward keying connection but I am not sure

Stated differently which interconnecting cables do I need to order to cause the

Mike,

You can order one from Elecraft.
Order the KXSERa (3.5mm to DB9-F): Extra Cable 3.5mm to RS232 DB9-F for
KX3.

It can be found in the KX3 or the KPA500 order listings.

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Hello,
I am trying to understand the operation of the KAT500 utility. Not
sure if my problem is pilot error or maybe a problem within the tuner
itself. I have the latest firmware installed.
I am unable to manually select the antenna using the utility. I cannot
physically check the tuner as it is in a remote location. Each time I select
an antenna other than ANT1 using the radio buttons, the selection reverts
back to ANT1. This happens whether in Bypass, Manual, or Auto modes. I have
verified the antenna setup per band. In my case I want to use ANT2 for 80
meters, and have set this up in the antenna tab. I have even disabled ANT1
for 80 meters, but the utility still won't let me select ANT2 for 80 meters.
The KAT500 also does not automatically switch when RF is applied, even
though the utility will read the correct 3.5 MHz frequency.
Any ides for what to check?

[Elecraft] KAT500 utility works -- then doesn't

2016-02-09 Thread John Shadle
Hi all,
After finishing up my K3S build with only one incident (the 400Hz filters
mysteriously not working in the new rig -- they are now at Elecraft for
testing, FYI), I am reconnecting my K3S and the rest of my station.
Finally, I got motivated to finally get my KAT500 connected to my computer!

I installed the latest version of the utility and all was good. I was able
to view the SWR and FWD/REF power as the unit trained itself (after
clearing the memories, first). Then, without warning, the utility stopped
recognizing the KAT500. The COM port is still there and it hasn't changed,
but the KAT500 is no longer found. Many options are now grayed out.

I've tried changing the COM port assignment for the KXUSB adapter, but that
does nothing. I tried removing then reinstalling the adapter, which also
results in no change.

Any ideas what is going on? Could RF have somehow gotten into the
controller in the KAT500 to make it not respond to the KXUSB polling?

The KAT500 still tunes as usual, but I'm just not able to access the unit
at all via the computer interface.

Thanks for your help.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 tuning problem

2016-02-05 Thread Bill

That was my first thought - so I laid out a new coax to the antenna.

That said, this morning everything works just fine. I can only figure
the KAT500 heard me say that it was leaving and it decided to work. Be
interesting to see how long this holds.

[Elecraft] KAT500 tuning problem

2016-02-04 Thread Bill
For the past month I have been experiencing tuning problems with the
KAT500.

The antenna in question is a simple 75 meter dipole fed with coax. You
tune the antenna at 3922, 2955 and 3975 - just for example. When you
return to those frequencies, a few hours later, the tuning is all off
and the KPA500 demos its displeasure by beeping and flashing lights.
Retuning will again hold for a few hours, then all goes haywire again.

I have given shake test to the antenna/halyards - with an analog SWR
bridge in line - and see nothing to indicate breaks or damage. I
replaced the feed line and it still does everything the same. All coax
lines inside have also been changed out - to no avail.

I should mention that this problem exists on an alternate antenna also.
The alternate is also a dipole type. No remote baluns, nothing other
than simple center insulators. Chances are they are built properly -
been doing it for over 55 years and have never experienced anything like
this.

I have reset the KAT500 to default a couple of times - reinstalled the
software - all the things you do with black boxes - went through the
training thing. I spoken with Elecraft and followed their instructions
to the letter also (which were the same as what I had been doing). It
all holds well for a few hours, then goes wacko.

If I have to push the buttons every time I QSY, there is little reason
to continuing using the KAT500. Of course that makes using the KPA500
more difficult or impossible.

Shipping is expensive and so are service charges - the tuner is way out
of warranty.

Anyone have experiences such as these or suggestions?

I am seriously considering regressing to a manual tuner.

Thanks,

Bill W2BLC K-Line

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 tuning problem

2016-02-04 Thread Keith Onishi
Have you checked your KAT500 with a dummy load instead of feed line?
This would tell you either your KAT500 or feed line to antenna (and antenna) is
in trouble.

Bill,

After you do the initial TUNE (training the ATU), do you switch it to
MAN? If not try that and see if it corrects your situation.

If not, then it is time to contact support.

I should mention that this problem exists on an alternate antenna

anything like this.

I have reset the KAT500 to default a couple of times - reinstalled the

training thing. I spoken with Elecraft and followed their instructions
to the letter also (which were the same as what I had been doing). It
all holds well for a few hours, then goes wacko.

Is it to have a change made to the KAT500 firmware so we could lock it in

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 tuning problem

2016-02-04 Thread Jim Miller
Since you are running KPA500 along with the KAT500 and you stated you don't
have a balun, I assume you don't have a common mode choke either.

I suggest a trip to http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf as I suspect
you have RF in the shack.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 tuning problem

2016-02-04 Thread Bill
I have done the reading of the printout - some really crazy SWR numbers
for the antenna that I know are not correct.

So far as RF in the shack - I might consider that - if things had not
been working correctly until abut a month ago. Nothing has changed until
then, causing all the efforts and modifications to isolate the problem.
Other rigs - with ATUs - are working just fine with the entire station.

Everything RF is brought into the house to a well grounded bulkhead.
Longest run from any rig/amp/tuner is 6 feet to the bulkhead.
Interconnects are all as short as possible. Equipment is all connected
to a central grounding point. In other words - been there and done that
out of habit.

Tonight I am running barefoot with the antenna running direct to the K3
- all is good. Tomorrow I will try to get everything back to where it
was before this mess started and tune when I QSO as a routine and forget
whatever else the tuner is supposed to do. Sure reminds me of what it
was doing when I first got it.

A manual tuner will be ordered very soon and the KAT500 removed from the
lineup.

I don't see a magic bullet on this - thanks for all the ideas.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Re-Tuning

2015-11-15 Thread Cliff Frescura
Antenna issues specific to the OP aside, there is a valid reason to have the
KAT500 recognize split and inhibit retuning/recall.

The need for this functionality is very apparent when running split on 40m
SSB when the DX is below 7.1 MHz and listening up much higher than 5KHz for
anyone using a narrow bandwidth 40m antenna. Consider that the KAT500
already tuned the antenna on your TX, so the "fix the antenna solution"
doesn't apply. Listening ~50KHz away should not require any retuning since
the tuner's settings at your TX should be good enough for RX.

Here is how it would work:

1. When the KAT500 sees a *transition* from split off to split on...
a. The KAT500 would recall settings for TX Frequency or retune
(under the VSWR settings condition) when it sees RF for the first time after
this split transition
2. When split is on (Split mode)
b. The tuner should not change any settings regardless of
frequency/band - except under VSWR conditions based on settings.
c. Perhaps both the "Auto" and "Man" indicators would be on in order

3. When the KAT500 sees a transition from split on to split off then go into

The main reason I am using the tuner is because of a compromise antenna. If
the antenna was flat enough across the band I wouldn't even engage it. In
my specific situation there is also at KPA500 connected, so the way that the
KAT500 works today will result in the KAT inhibiting the KPA while it
retunes/recalls. Although fast, I suspect that the amp is not engaged
initially when I send (speak) my call sign in the pile. On very rare
occasions there is also a KPA VSWR Fault. While probably not an issue, the
amount of relay chatter in very short period of time between fast RX/TX/RX
transitions is a bit unsettling.

Other suggestions. First, put it on bypass and see what the SWR indication
is. If it's reasonable, go to MAN mode, force a tuning (put
K3 in TUN mode) and let it tune.

Carefully check the entire coax path between K3 and the antenna. All
connectors should be finger tight, then tighten with gas pliers.

Any indication that the coax is wet? Moisture entering anywhere along the
run will usually migrate all the way down to the lowest point. Open
connectors to see if there's any moisture. A good way to test is to use a
tissue or paper towel as a probe.

If you have TDR capability, look at the feedline for any discontinuities.
You should see connectors, the antenna, and any switching between the
antenna and your test point. Most vector analyzers can do TDR. If you don't
have one of them, ask around your ham neighbors to borrow one (and ask them
to help you do the measurement).

2015-11-15 Thread Cliff Frescura
I went back and reviewed the KAT500 command set and it doesn't look like
this is possible because the serial protocol does not have a way to
communicate split status. I've been knee deep in the KPA500 serial protocol
(with great results thanks to Jack W6FB) and thought they may have some high
level similarities, but not really.

Do you know how the KAT500 interprets frequency, if driving only the band
data lines (BAND0-3) via an external TTL device? Does it pick middle of the
band if there is no last used frequency?

Robert,

The KAT500 can select 1 of 3 antennas for any band. All you need to do
is select the antenna of interest from the Front Panel - no computer
required.

KAT500 Utility can make the setup of the various bands and antennas
easier than doing it manually. That does require a computer, but once
set up, no computer is required.

You can setup the KAT500 without the use of KAT500 Utility, but it will
take longer and require more mechanical steps.
The Utility program can be downloaded from the Elecraft website - it
does not come already installed with the KAT500.

[Elecraft] KAT500 Ant outlets

2015-11-14 Thread G4GNX
I am about to buy a KAT500 and having read the owner’s manual (shock horror!) I
notice that the tuner will choose an antenna according to a particular
band/frequency it’s encountered before.

Is it possible to defeat this feature as I tend to use two different multi-band
antennas, according to conditions. The vertical in particular is better for DX,
with it’s high angle of radiation. I often swap the antennas on the same
band/frequency, so would not want auto-recognition.

Doesn't the KAT500 come with a utility program already installed? And...can the

The KAT500 Utility is a CONFIGURATION UTILITY. Look at it. It allows the
user to choose which outputs CAN be used on each band. That set of
choices is saved to the unit. Then, during operation, the user chooses
the output as he operates using a front panel button that cycles through
those choices.

Let's say, for example, that my only 30M antenna is on output number
three. I set the KAT500 so that it automatically goes there when I go to
30M. Now, I have a 20M-6M SteppIR on output number one and a 20m
monobander on output number 2. When I go to 20M, the Ant Selector button
on the KAT500 toggles between output 1 and output 2.

This is a simple example. There are many possibilities. My station has
monoband antennas for 160, 40, 20, 15, and 10, so I select them with an
external switch to output number 2. And, like the previous example, my
SteppIR is on output number 1. On these bands, the front panel button
toggles me between outputs 1 and 2. I happen to have three antennas for
40m, so the third one gets switched externally between it and the 30M
antenna to output #3. So on 40M, the front panel button toggles between
all three outputs.

Put up a new antenna? Use the KAT500 Utility to change the config as
you need it.

Hope this helps.

What's the antenna? From the symptom, I suspect it's nowhere near

into the feedline. And, if the antenna is a poor match to the feedline

[Elecraft] KAT500 Re-Tuning

While working the Willis Island pileup, following the operator on 12

2015-11-04 Thread Wes (N7WS)
I don't believe that it has anything to do with whether or not a match can be
reached. Some SWRs are simply too difficult to measure accurately, even with an
error-corrected network analyzer. For near ideal reactances or very high or
very low SWR, reflection measurements are inappropriate. In other words, if the
impedance is on or near the periphery of a Smith Chart (rho ~ 1) find another
method.

Some of what you say is true, but has nothing to do with the problem.

Soapbox comment: Personally, I would (and do) rather use Heliax before I would
ever use ladder line.

Try it with a 1: balun and see if the SWR improves or not.

As for actual, honest SWR readings, I assume that most meters are unreliable
in the actual readings when the SWR gets high, especially 10:1 and above.
They are really built to operate in the 50 ohm range, not 500 or 1000.

Feed point Z's:
1.9: 5.6-j1149
3.9: 78+j2
7.2: 2703+j2201

Your ladder line will transform these impedances to something else ...
unless it happens to be a multiple of a half-wave at one of those
frequencies. Tell me how long it is and we can calculate what it looks
like on the high side of your 4:1 transformer. I don't recommend
holding your breath that it will be good on all three bands though.

The radiation resistance on 160 will be very low and the 4:1 transformer
will divide it by 4, meaning just a tad above 1 ohm. It is also very
reactive.

If you really want to use it on 160, try shorting the ladder line at the
feed end, remove the transformer, and connect the shorted end to the
coax through a variable cap. Run 1 or 2 wires on the ground from the
coax shield and see if you can feed it as a Marconi-T.

If your ladder line is 60 ft long, feed Z at the shorted end of the
ladder line will be about 110+j1400 and an Xc of 1400 ohms will probably
work fine for the KAT500.

SWR meters, which usually measure VSWR are fairly unreliable at high
values of mismatch.

Thanks, you are exactly right. My curiosity is about what the KAT500 was doing

2015-10-26 Thread Bill Wiehe via Elecraft
Some may recall I had a issue with my KAT500 not connecting to the computer
therefore not allowing me to use the KAT Utility. After checking com ports and
ever purchasing a new KXUSB cable from Elecraft, I sent the unit off to the
mother ship for a look-see.  Turns out we lost transistors Q1 and Q2. They were
replaced and all is well once again.
I do not know how or why they were "blown" but we happy all is once again
working. Thanks to the Elecraft Team and Service Tech Cory for the quick turn
around.

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] PC Data to Amp Control?

2015-10-10 Thread Jack Brindle
See below for a better understanding of how the KPA500 works when set for RADIO
= SERIAL mode.

The KPA is designed to either connect directly to the Kenwood radio or with a
“Y” adapter it can eavesdrop on the computer-radio conversation. When
eavesdropping, it is the computer (or other controlling device) that determines
the polling rate. When that devices issues a frequency request the radio
responds and the KPA500 will receive the data and respond accordingly.

When the KPA is set for RADIO=SERIAL, the SER POLL setting becomes important.
When OFF, the KPA does exactly as described above - it only listens for data
from the radio. If you directly connect the KPA to the radio (no Y cable into
the KPA), then set the SER POLL item to ON. This will cause the KPA to
periodically poll the radio for frequency. The poll rate is once per second,
and the KPA issues the following commands for each poll: “FA;FB;FT;”. Again,
note that this _only_ works when the KPA is allowed to talk to the radio
directly.

The KPA500 is constantly available for data coming into its serial ports, and
reacts to that data within 1 millisecond of the receipt of the terminating
semicolon. If you are seeing it react every five seconds, that means the radio
is only sending the information every 5 seconds. You should determine why that
is happening, most likely because the commanding device is only polling with
that period.

If the DXLabs can send the proper format for the KAT500, then this might work.
There are very few devices that do send native KAT500 or KPA500 commands, so
you might want to look at another method unless that device happens to be on
the short list. I have no info about the DXLabs device, but tend to doubt it
handles the format. Also realize that the KPA500 will change bands immediately
on detecting transmitted RF at its input on a band other than the one it last
used, so this should not be as critical as you might think.

The KAT500 does not listen to the K3’s serial port for its frequency
information, but rather to the K3’s Auxbus channel. It also does not understand
the K3 responses, so piping K3 - formatted serial data into the KAT500 (or the
KPA500 for that matter) will pretty much do nothing.

If no computer is involved in the station setup, it is quite possible that the
you may want to have the DXLabs device eavesdrop on the KPA-computer
communications. In either case, also realize that nothing is actually sending
the BCD data for the KAT500 or KPA500 to respond to. Neither of these devices
will drive the BCD signals, they only listen to them. That means that both must
respond to RF data to determine band changes, unless you find some way to tell
both (independently) the new band. Perhaps the DXLabs box can perform that
function. It is possible for a KRC-2 to do this function, although I have never
tried it.

Good luck and 73!

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] PC Data to Amp Control?

2015-10-10 Thread Cliff Frescura
Update:

Bottom line is that the sniffer approach works.

Details:
1. Ideally, the sniffer should *not* be attached to the radio (Kenwood) RS-232
line, but to the secondary RS-232 line (Configured by DXLabs software). It
appears that KPA500 only responds to commands from DXLabs and not the radio (I
suspect this is because polling is being used by DXLabs and not the Kenwood
Auto Info command) - yes, I did try a pin 2/3 swap on the sniffer tap point.
This also has implications when the KPA500 is turned on after frequency changes
because it will know the current frequency (not fatal since it can RF Sense
switch anyway).

2. The KPA500 seems to "look for" radio RS-232 data about every 5 seconds
because that is the lag from the Kenwood changing frequency to the KPA changing
bands. A bit too long for me but tolerable.

Next Steps:
1. Move the sniffer to the KAT500 RS-232 line where DXLabs will send data via
the Secondary COM Port (K3 native format) to the KAT500 when clicking on a spot
or moving the Kenwood VFO. Alas, I have the USB cable for the KAT500, so I
need to get the RS-232 cable.

Or connect the Kenwood’s serial port to the KPA500’s Radio port, then set the
RADIO = SERIAL in the KPA.
Follow the directions in the KPA manual. This is exactly what that serial port
is designed to do. Make sure you use the RADIO port, not the PC port for this.

If you connect the serial port from the TS-940 to a computer, just make a Y
cable to allow the KPA to see the data going from the Radio to the computer.
And make sure the TX line is not connected to the KPA.

Also note that the KPA will not interpret the data destined for the KAT500. It
is specifically look for transceiver data on the Radio port, or KPA-specific
commands on the PC port.

[Elecraft] [KAT500] PC Data to Amp Control?

2015-10-09 Thread Cliff Frescura
Hi,

If I change bands on the KAT500 via the PC Data port, it appears that the
new band data is not sent to the Amp Control connector. Is this expected
behavior? (hoping no).

For reference, my setup is:

Kenwood TS-940

DXLabs Logging program

KAT500

KPA500

The 940 is connected to the computer and controlled by DXLabs. DXLabs is
configured to send commands to the KAT500 (follow the 940). This all works
fine. I'm now trying to have the KPA500 follow the KAT500 via the Amp
Control connector on the KAT500 (with E850463 cable).

Thanks Dick,

Looks like I could either have the KPA500 sniff the RS-232 line into the
KAT500 (use RXD pin only at the KPA500), or implement BAND0-3 and make it
minimally emulate a K3S into the KPA500.

Today I realized that when I switched from, say, 10m to 6m that the ANT
stayed with ANT-1. In fact, it stays on whatever I manually move it to.

I also have ANT3 which is a cantenna dummy load kludge, fwiw.

Using the KAT500 Utility I verified that 6m has "Enabled" both #2 and
#3. 6 has #2 "Preferred" .

10m, and all HF, has #1 and #3 "Enabled" and #1 Preferred.

Inside the KAT500 utility I can switch Auto, manual and bypass. It seems
I have full control of the KAT500 with the utility.

I removed DC power from both K3 as well as KAT500 after checking.

Summary is no matter what band I select on the K3, the KAT500 doe not
follow.

What can I check, here, to see why the antenna tuner no longer
automatically switches when I change bands?

got the answer direct email ... seems due to the extreme rats-nest of
cable(s) to 3 XVxx transverters; EME sequencers, KAT500, PC cables and
stuff passing back and forth, that I overlooked a slightly removed cable.

Sounds like the amplifier key line is not connected thru the KAT500. The ATU
must be able to break the amp key line during tuning and all other ATU relay
transitions.

I finally found out the answer. In checking the AuxBus cables, I found a
cable connecting the K3 Key Out to the KPA500 PA Key. Removing this cable
made the fault go away. Perhaps I had followed the Figure 3 on page 23 of
the KPA500 manual at some point. Anyway there is a lot of cabling back
there.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Fault

2015-10-02 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Right! You want only ONE key line. Note that in Figure 3 (pg 13) the
KPAK3AUX cable contains a key line inside of it. Figure 4 (page 14) show an
external key line cable between the K3 and KPA500 so you can break into it
to control some external gear such as a Stepp-IR antenna controller, but
also shows the "key line interrupter" between the K3 and the KPAK3AUX cable.
The interrupter opens the key line inside the KPAK3AUX cable so it's no
longer active.

Every time I have to recable my K3/P3/KPA500/KAT500 setup - which is almost
daily - I think to myself "Isn't wireless fun?"

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Fault

2015-10-01 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Dave,
I don't have the full context of your note but here is some information that
may help:

3.9.5 Tuner Fault Conditions
The FAULT LED being lit does not mean there is an equipment failure to cause
you concern. Rather, it indicates a condition that you should correct.
A fault will occur, and the FAULT LED will light under the following conditions:
• If the RF drive power exceeds 110 watts during a tune operation. This
can happen if your amplifier outputs more than 110 watts and the KAT500 does
not interrupt the keying line while it is tuning. You should be using a K3–KPA
Cable as shown in Figure 3 4 or a separate keying line cable as shown in Figure
3 3. Note that the KAT500 will not open the keying line if the power input to
the tuner is greater than 30 watts unless you have configured it as shown in
Section 3.8.
• The VSWR of the antenna is higher than the configured Amplifier Key
Interrupt VSWR Threshold and the red FAULT LED illuminates. If this occurs,
the amplifier’s keying line is interrupted.
This fault may occur frequently while the tuner is tuning and will be cleared
automatically when the tuner is finished and a transmission occurs where the
VSWR is about 10% lower than the threshold. If the fault persists, press any
KAT500 key, change bands, antenna or KAT500 mode, or fix the antenna problem
and transmit again. Because this fault may occur frequently, and normally,
when tuning, it is not written into the fault log.
• The impedance is outside the normal tuning range (see Table 3.1) but
the KAT500 is able to match it. In this case, you should reduce the power as
needed to protect the KAT500.
To reset a fault, tap the TUNE switch or switch the power off and then on by
holding the MODE switch.

[Elecraft] KAT500 Fault

2015-09-30 Thread dave_w0ru
I have the K3, KPA500 and KAT500 setup per Figure 1 on page 5 of the owner's
manual. With the KAT500 in Standby, I can tune with the KAT500 just fine.
When I try to tune with the KPA500 in Operate, I get a fault on the KAT500.
The KAT500 utility shows the maximum power set at 1500 watts. My
understanding is that the KAT500 switches the KPA500 out for the tuning and
back in when tuning is done. What is causing the fault on the KAT500?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Not Working - Not Resolved

2015-09-25 Thread Byron Peebles

I've gone through a bit of this under Windows 10.

Open DEVICE MANAGER and the PORTS device listing. This is in
Settings->System->About->Device Manager.

Connect your cable to the KAT500. You should hear a beep and see the
device appear. That is the COM.

The ports are 38400 and the COM might come up a 9600, so you change the
settings to 38400.

If you computer confuses the KPA and KAT and you KNOW they are
different, I'd suggest you add a good quality USB powered hub and
connect through it. I have a pretty good computer and I've had to
attach eight external powered USB3 Hub ports to it for stability.

[Elecraft] KAT500 - Utility not working

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility

2015-08-24 Thread Warren Merkel
Brian,

I had this happen to me one time.I believe it was trying to find the
KAT500 on a port that was no longer the correct COM port. A device was
there but it wasn't the KAT500.Try unplugging all other USB devices
that you can, leaving only the KAT500 connected, and start the
application again. (Kill the task in the process list if you see it's
already there) If no joy, try disabling any COM port sharing software
you might be using as well.

I just tried to find where the KAT500 utility stores config info and
interestingly didn't find a thing in what looks to be the right place
( %appdata%\Elecraft\KAT500 Configuration) The folder is empty!
Was hoping it was just a config file that we could look at.

Might I suggest you look in the Control Panel Device Manager, and
determine which port is being assigned to the KAT500. It should be
listed under Ports and LPT It shows up as USB Serial Port (COMx)
Where x is a number. Make mental note of what the COMx is in your
case. That at least means that the KAT500 is being recognized by the
computer and is assigned a COM port. If this port assignment doesn't
make sense from what you expect or what it was using previously,
possibly the Utility is hung while trying to use different port than
what it is being assigned to the KAT500 now-- and not doing a good job
of telling you it's having an issue.

Have you tried uninstalling the Utility completely and then reinstall
it? Hopefully the uninstaller will remove the incorrect configuration
information on the way out. The developer needs to chime in on where
that is kept.

Hi to the group.

I have not wanted to get into this discussion but I have had a similar problem
with other programs and will throw this out just in case it is your problem. If
you have a second monitor and display that program on the second monitor the
program will not show up on the main monitor even if the second monitor is
missing. I had to put my second monitor back on and move the program back to
see it. This happens on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 so you might give that a try.

[Elecraft] KAT500 Remote Utility

2015-08-19 Thread Wes (N7WS)
I'm trying to use the KAT500 Remote Utility and having an issue. I've used this
in the past without incident, although that may have been an earlier version.

The current version 1.0.9.0 connects to the KAT500 normally, briefly displays
the (correct) state of the tuner then almost immediately crashes. Can anyone
else verify this and/or offer a fix?

Thanks, Wes N7WS

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 / W2 Serial Connection

2015-08-17 Thread Don Wilhelm

Brian,

I don't know which DE-9 to 3.5mm cable that you currently have, but it
is easy to check with an ohmmeter.

Does DE9 pin 5 connect to the shell of the 3.5mm? That is Signal Ground.
Next check DE-9 pin 2 - that should connect to the tip of the 3.5mm plug.
Then DE-9 pin 3 should connect to the ring of the 3.5mm plug.

If all the cables you are asking about come from Elecraft gear, the
answer is that they are interchangeable.

OK, there is some confusion in the designation of RXD and TXD - if the
tip and ring connections are swapped in my connections above, that is
the result of that confusion - in other words, if pins 2 and 3 are
swapped from my description, it is my error, and the cable will work.

I once did a TDR measurement of the distance between the input and

It comes out to be about 18.Interesting, I would have expected
much less.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 tuner

2015-08-07 Thread fromjustthek...@frontier.com
Hi again Alan,
As far as your IC-7100 goes using the KAT500 auto tuner, the only thing that
you should do as I mentioned in my earlier post (to make sure that the KAT500
is giving you the most accurate tuning possible), is to increase the 7100's
power out to about 30 watts, press the TUNE button (or use the AUTO mode) on
the KAT500 for EACH new frequency you want to tune up on each band, and that
setting will be automatically stored, for each frequency, band and antenna you
tuned up on.
Once that is done, put the KAT500 in MAN (MANUAL) mode, go to whatever
frequency you want to operate on, and INSTEAD of pressing the TUNER/CALL
button, just hold down the PTT button the mic for a moment and the KAT500 will
recall the tuner's settings for that (or the nearest to that) frequency.
Remember that once the settings are all stored, you can leave your power level
at whatever you want to use. Just that simple.
You will be very happy I'm sure using the KAT500 both with your K3 KPA500, as
well as your IC-7100.
Have fun. 73, Alan, AB6C

Thanks to all of you who replied to my initial message. I think I'd part
convinced myself that I would prefer the KAT500 and your various comments
have reinforced those thoughts.

The KAT500 User Manual mentions use of the AH-4 protocol, which is what the
IC7100 uses. It also mentions use of 7 Watts, so I would hope that the
IC7100 would work OK as it outputs 10W in tune mode.

It's more important to me that the K3 and KPA500 interfaces with the KAT500,
the Icom interface would be a secondary useful bonus.

It would be interesting to compare the toroids and capacitors in both
products. My guess is that they would be similar, and the difference in
ratings is based on the degree to which the manufacturer wishes to be
conservative. As I've said on numerous occasions, MFJ products are rated in
MFJ watts, which are half the size of regular watts (Pmfj = 2EI).

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 tuner

2015-08-05 Thread David Bunte
Alan -

If you are satisfied with the performance of the MFJ tuner, you can
certainly give it a try. A friend of mine had one to sell a few years ago,
and let me try it on my very NON-resonant antenna. I have a 30' vertical
that requires a tuner on any except 30 meters. The tuner in the K3 handles
it quite well on 40 through 6 meters, but struggles on 80, where the native
SWR is about 18:1. The MFJ 998 could not achieve a decent match on 2 or 3
bands, including 40 meters, which is one of my favorite bands. I wanted to
get an amplifier, so I did not did not buy the 998. I now have the KAT500
and KPA500. The KAT500 has no trouble with those bands, so I can run my
amp at full power when and where I want... except for 80. For that band, I
switch to a Palstar AT-AUTO, and can run the amp at 500 watts. I know they
don't all get to the antenna, but I have only 30' of coax from there to the
antenna, and the coax is LMR600, so I have mitigated the losses somewhat.

A friend had a MFJ998 that he mounted outside in a weatherproof enclosure,
and ran 1500 watts to an inverted L. He was very happy with that setup,
until a tree fell on the enclosure and destroyed the tuner. He then bought
the MFJ998RT, and last I heard he was satisfied with it.

I am sorry, but I am not sure about the integration of the KAT500 with your
Icom 7100. Another friend used his Icom 7566PROIII with his KAT500, and
had to press Tune on the rig... and then Tune on the tuner... but once the
settings were memorized, then just a single DIT from the key, or a syllable
or two on SSB and the KAT500 was all set and ready to go.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 tuner

2015-08-05 Thread fromjustthek...@frontier.com
Hi Alan,

I think I can give you some insight. I have the KAT500 auto tuner that I used
first with my Icom IC-756Pro3, and now with my IC-7600. I also have an IC-7000
as well for mobile use, but have not used it with it, and since it doesn't have
a built in auto tuner, I don't know for sure what amount of RF it may put out
when a non-Icom auto tuner is connected to its Molex tuner port. For an Icom
AH-4 for example, its specs state that tuning power required is 5-15 watts and
that radiated power during tuning is less than 0.3 watt.

If you use the KAT500 with any rig that does have an internal automatic tuner,
make absolutely sure that it is turned off at any time the KAT500 is in use.
Internal auto tuners and external auto tuners do not cohabit well,
consequently, any tune settings will be greatly suspect. Its either one or the
other, never both in circuit at the same time.

I too intended to use it by pushing the TUNER on the rig, which puts out about
10 watts or so as all modern Icom transceivers do as far as I know.
Unfortunately, the KAT500 really needs to see somewhere in the vicinity of
about 30 watts RF out, in order to accurately tune the radio. I talked to
Elecraft tech support extensively, (who by the way are about the best in the
business, both professionally and technically) regarding getting different tune
settings using the tuner button (at 10 watts out) on the rig vs manually
setting power out to about 30 watts.
On the Elecraft website, in the FAQ's, it says:
Q: Can I use a 5 or 10 watt radio with the KAT500?A: The KAT500 can tune with
10 W but we recommend 20 W to 100 W for best tuning accuracy. If the KAT500 has
already stored a tuning memory for the current frequency, it is possible to
recall the tuned memory setting with less than 10 W. The KAT500 measures
transmit frequency to automatically select tuning memories and antennas.
So, based on Elecraft tech support's recommendations, I manually used 30 watts
to train the tuner to memorize all the frequencies I wanted to be stored,
which worked very well, and continues to do so to this day. But that is WITHOUT
using the TUNER button on the rig WITH a cable connected between Icom's TUNER
Molex connector on the back of the rig, and the other end going to the back of
the KAT500's TUNE jack and power jack.

The bottom line turned out to be that IF the rig's TUNER button is used to
train or use the KAT500 to tune new frequencies (with the cable described above
and because it only puts out 10 watts this way), the results you get will not
be as accurate, or reliable as those you would get by manually using it using
the TUNE button on the KAT500 itself (with no cable connected to the Molex
connector on the rig going to the KAT500). All of this was verified by Elecraft.
In reality, using the TUNE button on the KAT500 is just as fast as using the
tuner button on the rig with the sole exception that you DO have to set the
power out to about 30 watts. It may well be that it will work similarly with
your IC-7000.

Hope this gives you some insight as to what I found out. If you get the KAT500,
you will love it!!! I do. Let us know how it works for you. I'm sure that
others will be very interested as well.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 tuner

2015-08-05 Thread edeveloper_1--- via Elecraft
Hi Alan,
Like you, I have an MFJ-998 auto tuner, but was never really satisfied with its
integration with the Elecraft K3. I suggested to Martin that MFJ produce a
cable to integrate with Elecraft radios, but that hasn't yet happened so far as
I know.
Based on the superb tuning capability that the internal K3 tuner has, I decided
to take the plunge on a KAT500. I can't be happier that I did. The integration
with the K3 is seamless and pretty much flawless. The tuner follows my K3
wherever it goes, quickly and silently (silently because I've stored matches
for all bands; on the initial tune there's of need a bit of clatter but nothing
like the 998's) matching my two low wire dipoles on all bands including 6M,
though 160M is a bit tough because of the 52-foot length of the wires. I don't
get the surprise! tune-ups that I got with the 998. I get many more matches
on 160M and 80M than I got with the 998. All I have to do is switch my amp when
I change bands now. At some point I know I'll end up with a KPA500 and that
switching function will become a thing of the past too. I recently added a
third antenna (coil-loaded sloper) for 160M/80M and the KAT500 loads it up
beautifully. It's sweet that that particular antenna remains always selected
for those two bands.
I suspect that at least in part, the MFJ-998 is designed to evaluate situations
where it must expect the user will throw a full 1.5KW at it into a really poor
match, and it then must say My components really aren't designed for that
particular extreme, and I can't give you a 2:1 match. There's no way for me to
tell it Hey, I'm never sending you more than 800, I promise!
One thing I did like about the 998 is I had two sets of tuning settings - one
for dry weather, and one for rainy/snowy weather. It was easy to switch between
the two on each antenna.
Of course that is possible to do with the KAT500 as well. You can save a dry
weather configuration file and a wet weather file and read the appropriate
one into the tuner as needed. I've not yet gotten 'round to creating the wet
weather file.
I keep the 998 around thinking one day MFJ will produce a cable for Elecraft
radios, and I may decide to go through the hassle of getting a building permit
to install 240v to the shack, and go fully QRO. Until then, it's not connected
to anything now and the KAT500 is my do-it-all tuner for all occasions.
I went the kit route with the KAT500 and like all the Elecraft kits, it was a
barrel of fun to assemble.
I can't speak to how the KAT500 will integrate with your Icom, but as for its
integration with the K3, it's the bees knees.

Subject: [Elecraft] KAT500 won't tune the 6 meter antenna

My KAT500 doesn't tune my 6 meter antenna. I tried it on AUTO mode and
MANUAL mode. The antenna has 13:1 SWR. The KAT500 relays doesn't make noise
when I keyed the K3. Did I miss something?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 won't tune the 6 meter antenna

2015-07-06 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
Hi George,

A 13:1 SWR is what you might measure on 50 MHz looking into 50 feet of RG8
with NOTHING attached to the far end. From a reasonableness and efficiency
standpoint one should not plan anything more than 3:1 as a normal load for
a coax in coax out tuner. Less than that as frequency goes up.

Particularly 10m and above can have quite a bit of loss if not operated
well-matched (1.5:1 or less) over coax long enough to go from a shack
outside and up to an elevated antenna.

An antenna tuner is not a remote trouble neutralizer. Time to find out what
is busted in the antenna up there, or if the coax is cut or crushed.

Good luck on chasing down the trouble. Been there done that for sure. :)

I can't help you with the KAT500 question, but with a 13 to 1 SWR on 6m you
would be strongly advised to improve the match at the aerial.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 won't tune the 6 meter antenna

2015-07-05 Thread Jack Brindle
Yes. Check the KAT500 specs on page 2 of the KAT500 manual. The tuner is
limited to matching no more than a 10:1 SWR in the HF range, and lower at VHF.
Note that this is specified for 500 watts of power, so you may be able to get a
little more. 13:1 indicates a very bad match, however. You will be burning up
most of your TX power in the coax between the tuner and the antenna.

By far the best thing you can do is to fix the antenna so that is presents a
much better impedance to the feed line (and thus the tuner). Doing so will get
much more of that precious power into the air.
