might help to know the exact id of the card, so a 'lspci' might help. looks
like most of their cards are bttv878 chipsets, so install xawtv, and run
harddrake
what sort of connection does the cam have to the the pci card? composite?
I ain't sure, but the cam model might not make any diff, just getting the card
recognized might do the whole works.., once v4l sees and uses that card, you
should be good to go..

I recently upgrade from hdb being a dvd reader and hdc a 5 gig, and hdd a
cdwriter, to a dvd writer at hdd and a 120 gig at hdc, in MDk 9.1. I plugged
in the drive to the case, and I started the computer, fired up MCC, went to
diskdrake and told it the change, and that I wanted to make a 45 gig
/var/www. it asked if I wanted what was now in my /var/www copied over (of
course I did, and it did fine), and I now have a separate /var/www from /var.
have you just tried to see if you can just do it with out thinking about it
and using the gui?

you might chectk to see what the complete /dev device is for the /sdb? what
exactly was the error message? maybe the link format is backwards, or you
need to link to something like /dev/video/video0... sorry I cann't check

heee, are you sure about that??? I just add the folders from the
#4 powerpack 7.2 to the sofware sources and search for viavoice, it finds and
installs it fine. the foldes I add are "/Blackdown" and "/Viavoice" I have

[expert] 9.1 smp questions

2003-03-28 Thread et
I have upgraded to 9.1 from 9.0, the family boxes, with no hitch (celerys,
333, 500, 1200) and see no problems yet but those boxes are built to be linux
friendly anyway. my "real" concern is _my_ SMP box (dual 1gig P111
coppermine) as the only posts I have seen mention problems with apic, which
has worked like a charm for me. anyone got any info before I kick myself? if
this thing would upgrade as smooth as the rest, I would be there yesterday,
but the implemention of apic has me waiting on this box, as I will have to
schedule the major backup and downtime to do a fresh install.
so when some one gets it worked out, and can let me know, I would sure
appreciate hearing.

this may not be the anser you want, but it is time to upgrade the whole distro
if you are running 7.0 MDK. if you upgrade glibc then you will need to
upgrade other stuff and then other stuff and it will just go on and on. you
would be quicker even on a dialup, to download the gpl versions ISO and burn
a new cdrom. it is just my opinion, but sure is a mess to upgrade that much,
from that far aged. of course, back everything up first.

Civileme has left the lists for a while in the past, and will again return (I
hope and predict), and I think all the folks on the lists should take it as a
great compliment that someone so "in the know" would consider that not being
here would not be more detrimental to the Mandrake-Linux effort than being
here. In other words, I take it as his saying that while Mandrake-Linux is
less than "perfectly capitalized" at this stage, he believes that this list,
as well as newbie, will be just fine, and when the Capital situation for the
Company is improved, the whole effort will be reinvigorated, and in the mean
time, he needs to be spending his time concentrating oh his own
"capitaization" and looking for employment, even if it requires his
relocation.
I sure wish I could help him out in anyway, but I do not have any grewat
contacts looking for IT employees, other than what he can find on Monster
anyway. and I think he know's if he needs shelter durring a job search in our
locals , how to contact us.
We always miss his help and viewpoints, and wish him well.

As I understood a lot of the discussion it boiled down to you should not have
to edit etc/hosts to include an alias for either the server name or the
loopback name
so
what works for me on rc1
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.0.1 dads.tharp dads
192.168.0.16greybox.tharp
is not really "correct" but as far as I can tell it works ok
I think they said
 127.0.0.1 localhost
would be the "correct" entry, but it sure made stuff slow
try it and let us/me know

Ahhh, your killing me,,, (an American) I am laffing so freaking hard, talk

sell it to you at 2x the price and you can call it liberty software.

well now, with that info (that it works at 512 megs) _I_ would sure be
guessing about what the problem could be. I don't even remember what video
card you use, weither it was "onboard" and if the BIOS settings for the agp
type, speed and "opening" are set correctly. I am sure the vga=768 is a
setting for the video mode. (and I think it is a "fairly low" resolution) but
if it is a setting in LILO that you are screwing with, then just forget about
a vidoe mode durring bootup would be my suggestion.

that number is a video mode, were was it that you changed it (in lilo?
compileing a kernel? how long did you let the "lockup" sit? you may have just
been booting using a mode your video card could not do, so rather than do a
display that would hurt the card, you got no display, and it "may" have come
back had you let it sit 3 mins with a working X, or at leasta command prompt

just tell the install kernel you only have 256 with the f1 instead of "enter
to install or upgrade" and type (without the quotes) "linux mem=256M" and
then hit enter to install.
maybe the "freeze" ain't even a freeze, just a longer pause for processing
than you were used to, and is due to all that mem.

in my opinion it has much less to do with the speed of the burn of the cd (but
is MUCH more applicable when it is a Rewritable CD) than the abilities of the
burner.
now about this statement "If you put in a x2 re-writable, it'll only write at
x2, if it's a x8, it'll only write at x8, irrespective of what you want it to
burn at ?"
It has also been my experience that it is VERY possible to (_attempt_ to) burn
at speeds (both higher and lower) than either what is rated on the disk, or
what is rated on the burner.

well there are only about 3 million reasons you could have such a problem, and
without asking a few more questions, I don't think you will be able to get a
clearer answer.
are you using a command line or a GUI to burn? what command or GUI have you
tried? are you burning a file from a local hard drive? cd to cd "burn on the
fly"? what IDE bus is the CD burner on? I recomend burning no faster than 8x
anytime and anyway, for insurance against "overcoastering". (creating more
coasters than my microwave can zap in one 24 hour period.)

thank you..

I had built "back in the day" this same guy a p2 /500 (bx440 chipset) with
scsi drives and an 3 gig ide boot drive (WINnt4), and he was happy for a long
time, but I guess he got some cash some where, and now wants to spend some of
it, so I was more than happy to offer to build his next box too. so he wants
a box that we put in the corner and use for the next 5 years, like the last
one.
since I hope to be able to convert his uses to linux, and I am so damn happy
myself with the way Mandrake handles my dual P3 1000s (especially compared to
win2k on the same box, M$ just does not handle SMP like linux and the
advantges just are not the same IMHO) I wonder if dual p4s are worth
anything, especially considering "multithreading" CPUs.

not _this_ list. maybe if an individual want to see an attchment of a screen

thanks this is exactly the kinda discussion I was hoping for. got any good
clues as to what chipsets to look for, or stay away from? I think (pretty
damn sure) they want a SMP board of some sort.

[expert] building box for sound recording studio

2003-02-27 Thread et
just got a very nice deal to build a box (in the next couple of months,
quality is much more important than fast delivery) to run a sound recording
studio. I would love to hear suggestions. Budget is to be less than
$10,000.00 USD delivered, not including (professional) software. or sound
card (will have an Audigy, but the studio owner has some other card he wants
in the box along with the Audigy, and that card was over $900.00USD.
I figure for about that I ought to be able to create a pretty nice and fast
box. this box should be UFW scsi2 raid I guess, and I would love some first
hand knowledge of fast-wide scsi2 cards and drives. I am also wondering about
places I should be looking to check out some quad zeon mother boards.

I really like this, thank you. I am going to put those other memsticks in
this afternoon. since i also have win 2k on the box, will I need to make any
changes to it?
As far as MDK goes, when useing either a multi CPU board or more than 1 gig
mem, there are different kernel versions (smp, and enterprise.) but linux
really uses smp and more mem much better than WIn2k.
thanks,
see I learnt something again today... life is good.

for me, I just install win98, then MDK, and I split MDK all over two hard
drives (one / on hda6, swap hda7, home on hdb5, /var hdb7) and have 9gigs in
hdb6 as ntfs for win2kpro, and just install win2k pro last, and chose the
remaining partiton for win2k. this way lilo has one win entre and that loads
the win2k boot loader adn then I chose which win to run.

ehhh, no mater what, or so I have heard, win 9x to win me will NOT boot with
more than 512 megs ram. I can say that for sure with winME.
it is really the way the ram is used, as far as I know, that makes the
differences, that and the way it is tested by the kernal developers to decide
what really is the best optimization for the ram use.

compare the "second loading" times then, notice how much faster an application
loads the second time in Linux, then compare the comparitive app in M$win, or
even better, compare loading the app (try Adobe photoshop) in a VMware window
the second time, then compare loading it as dual boot.

Some wher, not to long ago, I was reading about adding an "Irish" English

The big change was to be all buttons that used to say "OK" would now be
changed to "so it is, so it is"
I would naturally consider that just like in the movie "they live" the message
should overwhelming be "Consume"

I noticed my local (Charlotte NC) CompUSA is still stocking Mandrake 8.2
powerpacks.

I always download (via modem, takes weeks, but thank you, d4x) the "final"
version, and I pre-order from the Mandrake Store a box set too, since all the
"joys and toys" of the boxed set are not included in the download. I also
have a silver membership, and if i compare what I get with that, to the
purchase of 1 legal copy of M$ anything win9x or better, and the purchase of
a legal copy of the current M$ office suite, I am still ahead by 50%.
and who in their right mind would want to buy anything M$ these days?

some of the problem may be that it is winME and WINME does not play fair with
third party defrag utilities unless they were made for winME. if you upgrade
from WIN98 to WinMe and have defrag utilities from other than MS, they will
eat the end of your hard drive as well as some DLLs.
but the replace winME with 2000 well ok...

I think they have had a number above RH for some long time, "overtakeing" as
long as three years ago is not anything new.

depending on the defination of "support" and what you thnk you should be
intitled to when you get something that is available for free. Perhaps if you
purchased the box version at a retail store in The USa you"might" have some
beef worth bringing up with the vendor, (best buy?,or McMillian publishing?
or whomever gave you the idea that this "free to download" product should
have support provided for you.

this is just false. Please refrain form public statemants as "fact" unless you
are prepared to provide public evidence to back up your statement.
such "falsehoods" in other forums (about other products too) might be enough
to get you sued for slander. the suit may not prevail, but you certianly
could find yourself paying a lot in legal fees that you would never recover.

As I understand it, Mandrakesoft is a "for profit" company, and not a "free
software distributor" I think that defination should be reserved for...
say... the PLF.

_I_ will say they should not support older versions.
I was going to go into my reasons, but I will leave that since it is worth
discussing in a new thread or by personal offlist mail if anyone else cares
enough to ask. Really, I think the reasons are self-evident to anyone that
thinks about it for a few minutes.

I would like to see a "free support" and a "paid for support level that is
extended, but that seems to be what they tried to do... support th "server
series" longer than the "desktop" series. that said, I firmly believe the
powerpack makes for a damn sweet serveer too, that can fillin as a desktop
when needed

I think it is worth mentioning, (more for someone that is just looking thru
the archives and comes across this thread) that the "support" we are talking
about is actully package sucurity updates, and not "I just got given a
Mandrake 7.2 cd, how do I get it installed" letters to the mail lists. I am
pretty sure that those kinda questions will still get some attention, just
not to be worried about by Mandrake Paid Employees.

I have noticed that Redhat, and M$ has lately published listing reguardiing
expected support cycles, and all of them are shorter than what most people
expect for manufactured products, but this is the way of things, and even
more so with computers, since the hardware is planned to be obsolete in 3 to
4 years anyway. the real problem (from my narrow little pinhole viewpoint) is
the need for applications needing all the computing power available. while
most companies got P3 M$ windows boxes, they still use them to emmulate
access to a termanel off the server, or run word. stuff they could have done
with the wyse monochrom termanal they threw away to have pretty colors.

if you are under the impression that M$ has an 8 year product suport for

both cases, but SO is the only common thread _that_ _we_ _know_ _of_.

hmmm sounds like rtfd is not his friend, and I would sure have been suprized
if he felt the same way had he considered the f1-rescue instead of enter to
install, and the fact it is all spelled out in a manner even a 12 year old
native english speaker could understand. I think the rescue mode is what he
is asking for. or else he is asking for M$. and believe me, reinstalling over
a botched install/configuratiion of M$anything does not neccessarly fix
anything.

dozen winows in Konq and six in Galeon. as well as backup the hard drive to a
different computer. in win 2k burning a cd is about all it can do at one
time. I used to see if I could do so many things that the box would slow
down, but I have given that up in Mandrake, I just don't see a slowdown. in
win ME I can burn a cd and surf the web at the same time, just can't burn a
cd and render a video at the same time, but in Mandreake, while the render
may take a little longer, there is none of the mouse freezing that win2k
cann't get past.
