Just to let you know that with a new CPU card - all problems gone, even with the original memory. Also a plug for Crucial Memory, who get 10/10 for helpful tech support. The person who picked up the customer support number **was the technician** (no transfers!) and knew all about macs, straight off the top of his head, even down to which models had firmware revisions for RAM speeds. Wallstreet Video Problem
Well, since we're discussing Wallstreet problems, I have one for you. I could research it myself, but I'm not sure how to accurately describe it, or what it's called. This is my setup: Wallstreet II 266 384MB RAM 40GB H.D. (8 partitions, plenty of room in each one) OS - 8.5 to 10.2.4. VM turned off if not prohibited FWIW I have had the disk cache set to 1024 (I just changed it to 2048 to see if that has any effect) I almost always have at least 8 applications running simultaneously (which I use all the all the time), including the Finder/System, which consumes memory like an application. I also always have around40-50 application/Finder windows open all of the time. Sometimes I run 8 or 9 simultaneous applications. That's when I see the following problem. How do I describe what happens to the video? Well, in OS 8.6, every time certain windows are changed, there is a brief moment where they have squiggly lines in them (hard to explain, but similar to lines full of tilde ~ marks). I haven't done a lot of self-diagnosis, but it *seems* to be windows that are active even when in the background. For instance, I'm in Eudora now, if I switch to my Telnet client (for Unix email), that window -- which is in essence always active -- that window has the momentary video weirdness. The same thing happens if I bring the Monitor window of IPNetMonitor to the front (it is constantly showing TCP/IP input/output, so it is active all the time as well). This does not happen if I reactive a Eudora window, or a browser winder, or a text edit window. In this OS, the problem will eventually cause the System to crash. However, if I am judicious with opening additional windows after the problem appears, I can usually continue using things for another 3-7 days before experiencing the system crash (I rarely shut down, except to change OSes or recover from a crash). If I'm in OS 9.2.2, it usually manifests itself after waking up from sleep. There the problem is worse. All the text on the screen is fuzzy and hard to read. If I scroll any window the text becomes muddied and completely illegible. The cursor become almost transparent. It's practically impossible to see ( or even find) on the screen. I have not noticed the problem in OS X. But I use it the least of all of the operating systems. Now, this acts likes a memory problem. It seems to only occur after opening one or two additional programs. However, I am very meticulous as to the manner in which I open and close applications (in fact, I almost never close any of the primary 8 that I use all of the time), so I don't have a fragmented memory problem. And I usually have between 180 to 250MB RAM free when the problem occurs. The only other thing I can think of that would cause this kind of problem, would be the video/video RAM. I don't know if the System heap could cause this or not. Seems like I have heard of Wallstreet problems that might have been similar (but again, it's a difficult problem to be described the same way by everyone). Does it sound familiar to anyone? Does anyone know what the solution is? I sure would appreciate some knowledgeable input. It's made OS 9 all but unusable. -Original Message- From: G-Books [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Bryan Kattwinkel Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 00:12 To: G-Books Subject: Fuse in Yo-Yo? Is there a fuse inside the Yo-Yo power cord (for dual-USB iBook G3), and if so is there any way to get in there and replace the fuse? TIA, Bryan I don't know if there is a fuse or not, but the Yo-Yo adapters are completely glued together you can break them apart but they never go back together right. I took one apart one day when I was having a momentary lapse of intelligence. The battery was completely drained so I plugged it in it didn't turn on so I thought that the adapter wasn't working. Later I remembered that it was work's Dell laptop that had the blinking green charging light not my Pismo. Oh well the frayed cord on it was starting to worry me anyway, so a new one was in order. Re: Lombard superdrive
The 835 is only the way to go if you don't need a Region Free firmware update, which is not available yet on the 835 (not sure about 825). The 815 has region free firmware and a backwards flasher to region locked (for warranty repairs so they can't blame the region hack). This is the one dissappointment I had with my new PowerBook, I can no longer use it to watch my region 3 DVDs. Re: Open Firmware for Powerbook Superdrive?
I seem to recall someone talking about an Open Firmware update for the Powerbook Superdrive which would allow it to use DVD-RW and also let it burn at 2x speeds. Does anyone have more information about that? TjL There is a firmware upgrade meant for at least some TiBooks with superdrives. I have it installed (Powerbook G4 Titanium 1GHz) and have had no major issues with it, but mind you this is a totally unsupported thing, and you may well ruin your drive if something nasty happens during the upgrade. This upgrade allowed me to burn DVD-R at 2x (originally 1x), and also to double the burning speed for CD-R (16x vs 8x) and CD-RW (8x vs 4x). Support for DVD-RW, though, is not very consistent. I have burned one or two successfully, failed some others, but in at least one occasion an apparently successful burn produced a disk that wouldn't be recognized and was even hard to eject. In that event Disk Utility could not be used (it kept the spinning beach ball, apparently trying and trying to read this disk). I had to restart holding the mouse button to get that stubborn DVD-RW out of the drive. Remember, this is *unsupported* and, if something goes wrong, can render your drive unuseable. Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.
That's not a fair comparison, Dell's laptops are generic Taiwan models with the Dell brand. Look at a high-end IBM ThinkPad, the T42 for example, and you find a build-to-order model that allows a choice of processors, screen size, networking and connectivity options, even options for embedded security and finger print readers. They even let you choose the built-in pointing device (the eraserhead, which I love) or the eraserhead AND the touchpad. Apple is getting better with video options on the 15 PowerBook, but for the most part they come one way. Yes, the Apple laptops are very well integrated, but pick up a ThinkPad T42 and you will see the same build quality and integration. IBM used to even give you the option of Linux instead of Windows, not sure if they still do that or not. Using the car analogy that is so common, if Apple is selling BMW, comparing to Dell you are comparing to Chevrolet, while IBM would represent Mercedes. I have (and currently) own both Apple and IBM laptops, and there are honestly things that I like better about each, not to mention a few areas in which IBM's design is better than Apple's. For example, hinges. Any long time Apple laptop owner has likely had issues with hinges. My current 12 PowerBook is great, but my last 12 POwerBook, while not loose, tended to bind a bit (new is smooth as glass). Titanium PB hinges flat-out break, as do those on Wallstreets, while Lombard and Pismo hinges just get loose. I've owned four ThinkPads over the years, and every single one of them had firm, smooth and sturdy hinges that held up to hard use. IBM's current T-series are very thin and light, weighing about the same as my 12 PowerBook and being just as thin, though with a 14 screen and a swappable drive bay that takes a second battery. That is great design, though Apple's trade-off is the wonderful slot-loading drive, which if they put their design emphasis on it, could probably be made to work in a removable bay, which could probably be crammed into the current form-fact. What I'm saying is that Apple's design, while up there with the very best in the industry, is not THE BEST in every area. Other companies (Sony, Toshiba to name two) also have design elements in their laptops that are innovative and superior. As Mac users we have it pretty good, but the fact that so many people here hang on to their Pismo and Lombard models makes it pretty clear that people value removable drives and multiple battery capability. Starting with the Titanium, Apple abandoned those features, while IBM continues to improve them with every revision to their T-series ThinkPad. Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.
I think they kept the ThinkPad division, not sure. Anyway, ThinkPads have been made in China for the last four years, so I suspect nothing will change other than the location of the headquarters. ThinkPads have always been profitable, but my take is that IBM wants to sell eCommerce solutions, which laptop and desktop PCs don't really fit into. Re: New PowerBooks
Good for you! For me it was very difficult choosing between the 12 (superdrive) and 15 (combodrive) this time around. The lighted keyboard would be nice, as would the larger screen. Also, while I do travel and like the small size of the 12, I'm not a student anymore and thus do not have to carry and set up multiple times per day, so the 15 wouldn't be too bad. What it really came down to was comfort. I've owned the 12 (1GHz) for a year and found that it really fit my lifestyle. It is small enough to take almost everywhere, and as a result, it is always there when I need it. I've had machines the size of the 15 before (T-series ThinkPad was my preferred laptop in my Windows days) and while only around 5lbs and not too bulky, it was just large enough that I often left it at home. The little PowerBook, on the other hand, is actually small enough that I don't bother with a PDA anymore. The screen on the 12 is fine (as you probably know). It may be inadequate if you do heavy content creation, but considering that until the Titanium came out 1024X768 was the best you could do on a Mac laptop anyway, it remains plenty for most of what a laptop is used for. I only want more resolution when doing things like video editing, for which I just plug in my external monitor. Slow iBook G4 1Ghz
About one year ago I had a Wallstreet II / PDQ 266 with 128MB RAM running Panther (I believe 10.3.5. and Jaguar 10.2.6 before that). I know this was too little, but unless I used very memory intensive apps it was OK. Now have encountered an iBook G4 1Ghz with 128MB running Panther 10.3.6 that is slower than my old WS machine! I looked at the processor with Top and it was running at about 50%. Some VM activity was going on, but it didn't seem excessive nor did the drive trash. Also I only found 3 swap files, which I'd expect with this little RAM. In my old WS changing to another app could take about 5 seconds at times, longer if I ran more than say 5 apps. To start an app took maybe 10 dock bounces. On this book starting an app takes very long time, like 15 bounces. Changing app takes way more than 15 seconds, between say, Word and System Preferences, those two being the only ones loaded. While any machine with 128MB is running sub-optimally, I was impressed on the WS 266 when Panther support in XPostFacto arrived and how much snappier my machine felt even with as little as 128MB ( I later upgraded to 384MB). It seems that I'm not looking at processor overload, but something more complex. Anyone have any suggestions what to look for including hardware problems in this model? I'm going to try to redo prebinding and getting rid of all suspect prefs, before I install more RAM. Any other suggestions? -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... There are reasons for the larger screen at the same resolution, the most important being that it is easier on the eyes. My 12 PoewrBook and 14 Lombard have the same 1024X768 resolution (I think the Lombard uses the same screen as the 14 iBook), and while the available real estate is exactly the same, the 14 is a lot nicer when working at a desk or reading text. On the 12, I end up zooming the text on most websites and usually have my word documents set to 140% magnification (plenty of real estate for that), and end up with nice, readable text. On the 14 I do the same, mainly out of habit, and end up with giant-size text that is a pleasure to read, but looks freakishly large. The 12 is definitely adequate, but the 14 is just a lot more relaxing. Of course, the price is bulk. Andrew -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... OT - Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.
Just looked it up. Lenova has a 5-year-license on the Think names, including ThinkPad, and that is renewable. Also, IBM will continue to sell the machine, only Lenovo will be the primary manufacturer (IBM owns an 18% stake in Lenovo. There will still be IBM ThinkPads for years to come, but there will also be Lenovo ThinkPads, most likely sold in China and Asia, with the IBM models continuing in the US and Europe. This is a merger, not strictly a sale, kind of like the HP/Compaq merger. We still have iPaqs, only they are called HP iPaqs now. Hopefully that means that nothing will really change, if the IBM press release can be believed. The manual for my Aluminum PB seems to make no official statement on the subject, but it shows an illustration that indicates one is not needed. This could be an oversight, however. I plan on traveling to places where power fluctuations occur more often than in the US, so I'm interested in the wisdom of folks on this list. There is a certain amount of cumulative protection. That is having a power strip with surge protection means that the protection built into your computer won't have to work much. And surge suppressors are usually rated for a total amount of energy absorbed, above that and they stop protecting. So putting a protected power strip ahead of your equipment does protect your equipment better. A laptop has a double layer of protection too, the external power supply has protection on the AC line and the power controller in the laptop protects against noise and surges coming in from the external power supply. Thus a strong enough surge might blow the power supply but not hurt the laptop. An external surge protector will add another layer of protection but it's more to protect the power supply than the laptop. Personally I don't use an added surge protector with my laptop. It's a convenience thing and basically I'm willing to risk the power supply as it's a small risk. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Safari/Camino/non-IE browser problems?
Does anyone else have problems using any browser other than IE, or is it just me/my router/my ISP? I've gotten along reasonably well with just IE until I installed Panther, where it seems to crash more, and until more sites started not working in IE... I've tried Netscape, Opera, Camino, Mozilla, Firefox, Safari, iCab, and OmniWeb, always a similar problem. There's a few sites I'm forced to use Camino for, like Gmail, so it's irritating. In all of these browsers, I almost always have to stop-reload-stop-reload-stop-reload a zillion times before any page will load, though for some like Safari and OmniWeb, the first page or two will load, and then nothing else period (for Safari) or nothing else without the stop-reload thing frequently (OmniWeb). iCab works very slightly better than OmniWeb, loads and doesn't load in fits and spurts, though it's lack of a bar at the top window and no preferences place that I can find. The rest, you're lucky to even load the start page! This occurs with all Macs connected to this network, wired or wireless, Jaguar or Panther. It does not happen when the same machines are moved to another network using different providers and routers. Changing ISPs is not an option. Anyone else have this problem? If so, what kind of router/ISP do you use? Is there any sort of setting I have to change that's on by default for all these browsers? -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Slow iBook G4 1Ghz
I too would really like to know about this. I recently acquired a G4 800mhz iBook and immediately upgraded it to a gig of RAM and I swear that it is slower at most tasks than my 400mhz Pismo, also with a gig of RAM. I really expected a big difference in speed and I just haven't seen it. Any ideas?? I just have one question regarding the timing of the purchase; As the G5 is some way off, the 1.5GHz is plenty good for me, but what about Tiger, would it not be better buying the AlBook with Tiger installed ?!? I will always have access to Tiger later (no need to harp on about software licensing, we all have different levels of conciense...) ;o) but maybe it'd be better to wait ?!... Larry Larry, Since you suggest that you will always have access to Tiger, there really isn't much of a reason to wait for it to be pre-installed on the PB's is there ? Re: New PowerBooks
Sometimes they are fine, but your chances of trouble are reduced by going with a mature product. Rev A on the 12 powerbook had serious heat issues and bottom cases that warped, making the machine wobble on a flat surface. SOme did it, some didn't, but the problem is much reduced on the Rev B, which also runs much cooler. I'm not saying All of the entire batch of Rev A G5 Powerbooks will be bad What I am saying is, Given the history of Rev A products writ large [which have ranged from CD ejection to paint coming off to weak battery life / wifi signal], if you are looking to buy a Powerbook and will buy one of the first batch off the presses [Rev A.0], you have a much higher likelihood of running into problems than you do if you were to buy a G4 Powerbook at this point when the line is fairly well polished. Does buying Rev A guarantee you problems and buying Rev Z guarantee you won't have problems? Heck no. But I'll stand by my suggestion that you'd be better off, statistically speaking, to avoid the potential problems. Saying Rev A problems are a myth is absurd. There's far too much evidence to the contrary. TjL -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: New PowerBooks
They seem to run cooler every revision. I tried the Rev A in the Apple Store and after just ten minutes playng with iTunes and exploring Jaguar the machine was scalding hot (I didn't buy it). I did buy the Rev B 12 last year, and it did get rather warm, but nowhere near as bad as the Rev A models. I bought the Rev D two-weeks-ago, and despite a 50% faster processor, it runs at about the same temperature as the Rev B, or maybe a little cooler (on account of the processor not being pushed as hard?). They have definitely improved the product during the production run, but more than the added features, the Rev B model had a totally new system board design that addressed the majority of the heat issues. I plan on traveling to places where power fluctuations occur more often than in the US, so I'm interested in the wisdom of folks on this list. TIA. SMPSs are inherently better than older transformer-based devices at filtering over-voltage (surge) and under-voltage conditions out, but spikes (e.g. due to lightning strikes) are still a problem. Of course, most consumer surge protectors aren't particularly effective against severe spikes either. I'd say you'd generally be fine as far as the power supply is concerned, but if you plan on hooking into any hotel modem or ethernet jacks, you'll definitely want surge protectors for them. Re: Safari/Camino/non-IE browser problems?
Do you have similar problems connecting with other protocols (e.g. FTP, POP3, SMTP)? To me, the issues you describe seem similar to those caused by high rates of packet loss over your connection; however, the fact that IE works doesn't fit in with that hypothesis. Just a check: try opening Terminal, and typing telnet www.apple.com 80, hitting return, waiting a couple of seconds, typing GET /, and hitting return again. What happens? If everything is working correctly, you should see a large amount of text outputted within a few seconds of you typing the commands.
