I called Apple Care and said I need to get a copy of the 10.3.7 update, lady snaps did you sign up yet, well no I need the software. So dealt with her, then she said we might as well get the iPods signed up, well I already paid for that, I don't see it. Applecare is a hardware warranty. Not a hand holding service. You need to register to reap the benefits of Applecare. I asked Apple Care if they could send a disk with these updates on there, I would pay for shipping and any reasonable costs. The new tomato on the phone said it's not Apples fault that you do not have the capability to down load a 100 meg file. Applecare is a hardware warranty. Not a hand holding service. Now I really want a G5, tricked out it will run between 5 to 10K. When Apple Care got nasty because I needed a upgrade disk and I mean snotty, Applecare is a hardware warranty. Not a hand holding service. They are not required to supply CD versions of software to a customer. If you don't have a fast enough connection then get one...or go rent one at your local Kinko's for less than the shipping costs would've been. It is not Apple's fault. One more thing, if you think there is a problem get it fixed before the last year of Apple Care and for sure the last 6 months. Less then 6 months they will blame it on a spilled liquid sometime in the last 6 months and Apple does not cover that. This is a joke right? This is slander. Can you back this up with evidence? No? I didn't think so. You must be FREAKING kidding me. I am an Apple Certified Technicianand no where in my training did I learn of this practice. Never have I experienced it in my entire career. I look at a book and diagnose it. I then order the part. Apple can not tell me to say one thing or another. It is a WARRANTY. Now if I open the book and smell coffee and see liquid then yes, I must be honest and decline the warranty work. But that has only happened a couple of times. I am an authorized Service Provider. The wireless computers are my PowerBook and my son's PC laptop. The wired computers are my iMac and my sons' PC towers. Last summer when we made the switch to DSL, everyone said, Get a Netgear router! While the wired computers are always able to be online, the wireless connection sometimes doesn't work. The fix was to disconnect the router's power for a moment, then plug it back in, and the two wireless computers would have the signal restored. Since mid-December, the wireless part hasn't worked at all. Well, let me take that back: one day out of the clear blue it did work. Of course, now everyone is telling us, Why did you get a Netgear? You should have gotten a Linksys! Our ISP suggested looking for firmware updates on the router, which we did. Netgear's tech support explained a fix, which didn't help, then sent us to critical care tech support and they recommended the same fix as the first group. We are currently ping-ponging emails back and forth trying to determine the problem. I am really thinking of buying an Airport Extreme base (or that pre-N router with the three antennas) for the wireless computers, and leaving the wired computers on the existing system. However, I hate to have to buy another router when we already have one. (Planned obsolescence?) Does anyone have a suggestion? Yes. Dump the Netgear and get a Buffalo. They can add RAM etc, but a Hard Drive will void your warranty. I used to manage a tech shop (just 8 months ago) and I am an Apple Certified Desktop and Portable technician. You can't even go into GSX (apple's online suite of ordering software and warranty history etc...) and order the parts. It errors out with a this part is for depot repair only please call blah blah blah... If someone tosses in a HD from an over the counter source like CompUSA then your warranty is now void. Apple Depot technicians are trained to look to see if you have been messing around inside your laptop or not when they start the repair at the depot. My question is this: she's now using Entourage 2001 for e-mail and she has a few messages that she's archived for reference. What is the best way to export these saved messages to the new iBook? She'll have Entourage 2004 on the iBook, but I'm thinking of maybe getting her to try out the mail program that comes with the Mac. What are your opinions on that topic? (Two questions, really!) Of course, I am hoping that nothing goes wrong with it, with or without Applecare, because I have no alternate system and I certainly don't have the money to buy an equivalent replacement or to obtain another system while I'm waiting for it to be repaired. I have heard Applecare also tends to be pretty fast with repairs - sometimes faster than if I were take it to a local authorized service center. It's *always* faster than taking it to a local center. Portables have to be sent to apple For repair if they are under warranty. That is a rule. Even for a certified tech. So sending it to Apple directly is the fastest way. That way you are skipping the middle man. Apple also turns the machine around the same day they get it. Meaning that if they receive it in the morning it will be shipped back out to you the same day fixed. The total turn around time can be as little as 72 hours. It's freaking beautiful. Kyle H. I had no idea they had that policy for turning it around the same day they get it. They absolutely do have that policy. The only reason it would take more than a day is if they needed a part...and that is unlikely. There are 3 repair facilities. Dallas TX, Memphis TN, and Elk Grove CA. I have visited 2 of those 3 and they have the parts...believe me. When I sent my 667 TiBook in for a repair I sent it on Wednesday and Got it back on Friday with a New Logic Board and Hard Drive. Try to find a logic board for under the $350 I paid for my APP on eBay. It won't happen. PS. I read somewhere that you have to buy it within 30 days of the one year initial warrant expiring. Is that a new policy or is it still within one year from the purchase date ? Hoping it's the latter. If you have your original proof of purchase it won't be a problem. If you don't have the POP then it goes by Apple's estimated purchase date. At least if my jewel does go South, that $400 I saved on AppleCare is almost half the price of the current iBook, which except for some video features I don't use and its smallish hard drive is actually more powerful than the 1GHz PowerBook that is now only 1-year-old. If yes, does anybody know what brand/type of white paint is closest to Apple's and what kind of stripper to use? TIA That depends on the mood of the intake technician and the tech that does the repair. Either one will probably void your warranty even if you stri the unit. I would and I am an Apple Certified Technician. No offense or anything, but if you do something like that you should just consider your warranty void. Tis webmail is considerably slower than AOL itself is, so it takes a ecent amount of time to replyh to all of the bounce messages. so what's the deal here? When will this problem be resolved? I know bouncing messages is a somewhat common thing with this mailing list, but seriously, last week I got over 30 bounce messages in oneday. Brian Again...for the 100th time. Bounce messages happen because of some hiccup with Maclaunch's servers. LowendMac has NO CONTROL OVER THEM. There is NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT. Every few weeks for the last 4 years that I have been a nanny people complain about them. Every few weeks the same recurring cycle happens. And guess what? Do you want to know what is funny about it? The bounce messages happen when our bandwidth gets high. What's funny you might ask?? Well, all the messages to the list about what to do about the bounce messages makes it worse! :-0 So, not to call you out individually Brian (this is meant for everybody), but all you can do is reply to the bounce messages or ignore them. I have ignored them and set up a filter (yes, I get them too) to send them directly to the trash. I have never responded to the bounce messages and I have not had the listserver kick me. Not once in 4+ years. So ignore them or reply... Whatever you choose. I will begin posting a message similar to this one every week on all the lists to try to put a stop to the Bounce message threads. Kyle H. Yes, but you don't want to be doing it frequently as the little plastic pins will break off. Replacing the keyboard would be the best option. Re: Shutting down PBs at night
On 9/14/04 8:09 PM, Gary Goldberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] Spew into the Cybertrough: Should they be OUR reasons? Like Donald, I'd like to know if this is a good idea for others Leaving a machine sleeping is leaving it in a very limited on state. Meaning that the power management circuits are charged all the time. For example, in my 17 Powerbook that would leave the Backup Battery Board, the DC in Board, the Bluetooth module, and to a certain extent the Logic Board constantly under power. I don't want to risk having to replace any one of these parts if the unit gets surged or one wears out more quickly from the constant stream of electricity. Whether or not you know or believe this it's true; unless you have some special regulator installed at your house (and I'll bet none of you do), your electricity is constantly spiking and dipping slightly. This is normal. Ask any electrician. Personally, I use a Belkin UPS that has AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) to clean up the power coming into my house from the utility pole. Things like refrigerators and televisions are much more tolerant of line spikes than computers. I have seen a house get surged and nothing was damaged but the iMac, and even things plugged into the same power strip are fine...but the iMac couldn't handle the rapid and drastic change in voltage. I also like to have my memory heap dumped and temp files unloaded, so I use Macjanitor religiously for clean-ups. Apple's stance on the topic is that it's fine to leave your unit on 24/7/365. That's because when your machine breaks you will spend more money at Apple and buy a new one. Apple also considers the Lifetime of a computer to be about 18 months, after that they expect you to upgrade. So they build their machines to last 2-3 years as a minimum. That way if something breaks you will (most likely) be outside of your 1-year warranty period and if you paid more money then your Applecare Protection Plan will cover you for a total of 3 years from the purchase date. And I highly recommend an APP on any powerbook. I bought it myself for my own book. Parts are just too pricey for PB's. What it really comes down to is this: My first powerbook was a PB100. I have had PB's throughout the last 17 years, and aside from a faulty PMU in my Wallstreet (common and well documented problem at Apple) I have had absolutely no problem with any of them doing things the way I do things. I sleep my PB when I am not going to be using it for up to about 6 hours...if the span is going to be longer than that I shut it down. I also shut it down every night and put it in it's Brenthaven bag to prevent dust from getting into it and I regularly open it and clean it. You can do things the way you feel is best, but for example, there is an article in the KBase that attributes constant sleeping to problems with the Pismo series. Kyle H. You can buy it from any retailer, or directly from Apple. I also heard about the extended warranty was not available in Florida due to laws we have here. Does anyone know how this all works in Florida? Up until a few weeks ago I was the manager of an Apple Service provider in the Tampa area. What you are saying is true. You can not (as an individual) buy Applecare in the state of Florida. If you have a business license with a separate tax ID # then you can. What it comes down to is that the gullible (or senile) elderly population in Florida have been marketed to death with offers from insurance companies (many of them scams) and they lobbied to have these types of insurances boycotted. Some companies have found legal loopholes in the system, like CompUSA for example, and they offer their extended warranties, but Apple is not willing to jump through millions of hoops to comply with the pathetic laws of a small and insignificant state like Florida (Quoted from an APP Service Manager in Austin Texas). I find it ridiculous that even if you go looking for Applecare and beg them for it they will not sell it to you if you are not a business in Florida. Go figure. Kyle H. What's the problem with swapping the old drive when the new one when it arrives? How in any way possible does this course of action be detrimental to Apple. Except make one more loyal person a little unhappy. At 18:55 -0500 11/15/2003, Kyle Hansen wrote: Here are a couple of reasons why. When a replacement is shipped and the customer gets a new one, the old/damaged optical drive has to be sent back to Apple as a dead core, they in turn send it back for a partial refund from the manufacturer of the part. You have 7 days to get it back to Apple in Elk Grove California. Now let's say that the shop gave him his optical module back during this repair so he could use it. Then on the 15th of November the shop gets his brand new one in from Apple. They have until the 22nd to get the dead core back. What happens if this customer is on vacation until after thanksgiving? Loses the core unit? Steps on the core unit? Has the core unit stolen out of his car? Accidentally brings in a different module? I maybe wrong, or just misunderstand. If the customer kept the malfunctioning drive to at least get some use of his computer and is able to use it for CDs, the new one arrives and the customer did not do one of the above listed scenarios or one of the million other things possible. Does it not equate to, no core no new replacement to the customer?. Here is where the problem arises. That module is about $330 with a core return. It costs $790 without one. So what happens is that when you go to send the core back, Apple dings you for shipping both ways and the full value of the item if you don't get it back fast enough. The problem is that I have had reasonable and responsible people tell me in my shop that they will be back with the keyboard that is missing 2 keys and they will trade it in when the new one arrives. About 8 out of 10 times they don't. They forget to bring the old one or they tell the service rep at the counter that they will bring it back tomorrow or they mean to come back and do it but get too busy or whatever. I have taken to a policy of education about this with the customers in my shop. I will not UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES give (for example) a Pismo DVD module back to a customer simply because of the thousands of dollars my shop has already had to eat this year. I'm sorry but half of the apples in the barrel are rotten and have spoiled it for everyone. It really adds up. I have had customers tell the service rep that the manager (me) has given them permission to pick up their keyboard and bring the defective back in a week. Flat out lies. It's really a mess, so that is why most shops will require that the defective part stay in their shop. I am surprised that they didn't keep the whole laptopwhich is what Apple requires them to do.They are no in violation of Apple's repair policies and could lose their certification and license for doing what they are doing. What sometimes happens Is a rep from apple calls and needs a Logic Board Revision number before the replacement can take place. If you don't have the laptop there and are forced to guess then things can get sticky. -- Kyle H. Re: G3/Mac OS X Settlement
On 10/29/03 2:11 AM, Edward Jackson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Spew into the Cybertrough: I think that all of this stems directly from the Mac culture itself. Simply putMac user's spend a great deal of time talking about their Mac. Bragging even. And then they find that the $3000 they spent three years ago is now completely obsolete (even an old Dell runs WinDoze XP with minor hardware upgrades) Oh Geez. I am a professional Hardware Technician (Apple and PC certified). Do not *even* bring up Dell. They are one of the crappiest manufacturers of relatively proprietary Winbloze crap on the planet and I cringe at the image of their hardware in my head right now. Gateway and HP are close behind. -- Kyle H. Hansen It's Always darkest... right before it gets totally black. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: G3/Mac OS X Settlement
On 10/28/03 11:03 PM, Krevnik [EMAIL PROTECTED] Spew into the Cybertrough: At the same time, they never said that features that were available before would suddenly NEVER be supported again. Graphics chipset support has come to be a very core part of basic OS functionality, and Apple realized this when they decided to do the drivers themselves. Thus the responsibility for core OS functionality lies on them, not us. This argument (and lawsuit) makes as much sense as people suing Apple because OS 9.2 will not run on their Quadra 700. Apple may have worded it wrong (as far as supported machines goes) when the first OS X release was in the works, but Geez. Move on. You have 2 choices: 1. Shut your mouths and keep using OS 8 or 9 and don't bother with OS X. 2. Try to make OS X run on hardware that is barely capable of it but do so at your own risk and have fun with your experimentation. Oh yeah...for those of you/us still running OS 9.It's been considered a dead OS for a couple of years now. Get with the times or QYB. Apple should not waste any more time or money un-developing their software so that it will run on machines that are years old. 18 months is a LIFETIME in the world of computing. If you can't handle that fact then you need a reality check. You shouldn't be biting the hand that feeds you (aka suing apple). All that I sgoing to do is hurt us all in the long run. And btw, I have an SE-30 happily running OS 7.1 32-bit clean. It was never meant to run 32-bit clean and I did it all on my own, but I didn't sue my favorite computer company because of the fact that it wouldn't run 32-bit clean. I fiddled with it and made it work. I use it as is, and am prepared to do so for some time. It does what I want it to do and that is good enough for me. -- Kyle H. Re: kanga questions
On 10/26/03 4:19 AM, kaldav [EMAIL PROTECTED] Spew into the Cybertrough: Hello, I have a few questions about an original G3 (same form as a 3400). 1. I wish to replace the latch and have the part. I found pictures to assist with hard drive replacement at www.genchan.com about the 3400, however there is nothing about the screen assembly. Is there a website giving instructions for taking apart the screen? Not that I am aware of. 2. I want to put into the Kanga a hard drive from a 5300. That hard drive metal cage has a plastic piece separating the disk from the metal cage and a metal foil type of insulator. However, there is no plastic and no metal foil separation in the Kanga. Is either one needed to prevent shorting out? It's just EMI shielding. They are interchangeable. 3. Is the screen for the original G3 exactly the same as for the 3400 or did Apple put in slightly better components in the Kanga but in the same size screen? Same exact display module. -- Kyle H.
