Hi,

You'll be much happier with G4 so don't even consider G3...seriously.
Here's an affordable upgrade from an outstanding company:
 https://4daystar.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPRODProdID=512

Thanks! They offer a good price - however, the necessity of having my
laptop sent over to them is a huge drawback. Wonder if there's any
chance of just having the necessary components sent my way; will ask
the Daystar chaps.

Also, I'll cosign Bruce and Laurent's recommendation of DMS for your
 RAM needs; top drawer service.

I'll have to stick to eBay - trying to make this upgrade as
budget-friendly as possible.

Cheerio,

BAD idea. You'll end up spending more time on it that it's worth,
likely suffer poor performance and system instability.

DMS prices are always competitive: they want $39 for a 256 MB for the
lower slot, $32 for the upper. http://tinyurl.com/bobbe

Bad ram masquerades as all sorts of problems and is one of the most
maddening issues to troubleshoot, particularly since you want to
stress the system with a hot-rodded CPU.

Your path is penny-wise, pound-foolish. Essentially you're buying a
used car, dropping a high performance engine into it, then buying
tires from a junkyard. I'd pay for new ram way before I'd consider
putting in a CPU upgrade.

WallStreet upgrade: enquiries and ruminations

2006-02-08 Thread Der Mickster
Fellow gentlebeings,

I'm sure I saw it discussed somewhere (here? on applefritter? some
obscure web forum in another dimension? in a dream? i dream of long
lists of mac-related hardware these days, you know . . .), but I can't
seem to find the link now, if there was one in the first place.

And so: presumably, my G3 300 WallStreet can handle a maximum of 512
megs of RAM. I wanted to clarify a few points concerning the exact
specifications of the modules I shall have to use. SPD. Check. Chips
on both shoulders . . . ahem, sides of the module. Got it. Make sure
it's 144-pin (the other kind wouldn't fit, anyway). Fine. 100/133 mhz
shouldn't really make that much of a difference due to backwards
compatibility, insofar as I understand it. Okay so far.

The question is: is the above list of criteria exhaustive? Anything
else I might be overlooking? Any known caveats? Also - is there such a
thing as a list of 256-meg RAM modules tested on WallStreets and known
to work? Any notoriously nasty modules? Most curious; this beast runs
a total of 192 now (OS X 10.2 sans Classic, I was an idiot to format
the drive and NOT install MacOS 9 anywhere, but those were the salad
days of the Mac user in me; another excuse that I have is that I
actually followed the advice of another Mac user, a daft and dangerous
tosser, as it turns out, but he seemed knowledgeable at the time, so
there; still on the lookout for a copy of the nine).

Next: there was much talk here about Wegener Media, and, going by the
amount of dissatisfied customers, my best option would be to avoid
them like the plague. Yet they appear to carry the cheapest CPU
upgrades for the WallStreet. Given the choice between G3 500 and G4
500, which would you go for? Is there any reason the former is
actually some 20 USD more expensive than the latter, although
chronology suggests the reverse to be more logical? On their site they
claim that I'll only need the G4 features if I work with video. Not
the case with yours truly; however, this machine is definitely used
for audio (for the meantime, Csound is the absolute champion speed-
and stability-wise; however, after the upgrade I intend to delve a
great deal further into the world of GUI ).

So yeah: do I really need a G4, and are there any cheaper/faster
options, such as getting the G3 and overclocking it, or is 500 mhz the
limit on a WallStreet because of bus speed?

Low priority issue: the LCD looks bleak, as though someone has gone
and sucked the very essence of colour out of it, devouring the
contrast for desert. Must be the relentless demon of age; the
calibration tool doesn't do much beyond making the hues look sombre
and funereal. Also, it proudly wears a couple of battle decorations
commonly referred to as dead pixels. I'd love to replace it, but how
do I go about it, exactly? Will a generic 14 panel do the trick? If
the answer to this one is in the positive, is there any chance I might
perform the transplantation myself with the assistance of a soldering
iron, a Torx screwdriver, a Sisters of Mercy album, a Talk Talk album,
a Joni Mitchell album, a gallon of Coca-Cola, a gramme of sulfate and
five packets of fags? If not, where do I look for one? Should I just
get me a complete screen assembly and discover the LCD panel to be
just as bleak as the one I have? Please advise.

I have more questions, but I suspect the Procrustean message size
quota may well have been exceeded already; if not, the above opus is
all yours to peruse and ridicule.

Curtsies,

Mickey.

Quit tossing, turning and worrying about it, just go buy your ram

right stuff.

I've upgraded dozens of systems (including wallstreets) with their
ram and save for one time I ordered the wrong thing, one time they
had the wrong thing in the correctly labeled package, and one time
they had been given the wrong specs for a particular model (a PC

100/133 mhz
shouldn't really make that much of a difference due to backwards
compatibility, insofar as I understand it.

There's industry standard backward compatibility and then there's Mac
standard backward compatibility.

Wallstreets will not accept many high density PC100 and PC133 sticks.

A PC100/PC133 stick may indeed be 256 MB (and low profile, too), but a
Wallstreet may read this as only 128 MB, even though the on-stick EEPROM
says it is 256 MB.

Wallstreets and similar machines (Beige G3, for example) have problems
with high density chips, and more particularly high density chips on one
or both sides of the stick. Even low density chips on both sides of the
stick can be a problem.

Later machines, say, BW and Lombard/Pismos do not have these same issues.

This seems to be a characteristic of the DRAM controller chip used on the
two affected series of machines, Beige DT/MT/AIO and 1998 PB.

wallstreet connection

2006-02-04 Thread l s
Greetings,
I have a Wallstreet that I am trying to connect to
my cable modem. I know the modem works, because I can
connect with my BW. I take the ethernet cable from
the back of the BW and connect it to the ethernet
port on the Wallstreet and then start it up. I try to
connect using IE, but it doesn't connect. I am
running 10.2 on the wallstreet. I have the
configuration set to DHCP server and the IP address
has changed from 000.000 to one similiar to my BW.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Lee

The easiest way would be to put a router between the
cable modem and the other computers.

To do what you are trying, I expect that you will have
to unplug the modem, connect the Wallstreet, and then
power up the modem and then the Wallstreet. Check the
settings in the TCP/IP control panel (or whatever it is
called in OS 10.2.8 - can't recall at the moment).

Generally, the modem gets the MAC address of the first
device it sees and expects that to be the only device
attached. A router fools the modem and passes out addresses
as needed.

Re: wallstreet connection

2006-02-04 Thread Geoffrey Peters

Stardate 060204.13:31 -0800. A subspace message from l s reads:

I have a Wallstreet that I am trying to connect to
my cable modem. I know the modem works, because I can
connect with my BW.

This could well be an issue with your modem, and not the laptop.

You see, cable ISPs used to be quite narky about the number of
machines that could be connected, so cable modems were made to
'spoof' the MAC address (the physical identifier of your computer's
ethernet interface chip - MAC stands for Media Access Controller) of
the first *real* ethernet device plugged into it.

My guess is this is what the modem has done, and to reset this
'spoofed' MAC address, you need to do a full factory reset of the
modem. The process for this will differ from modem to modem, so you
should contact your ISP and tell them you're changing machines and
you need to know how to do this factory-defaults trick.

Once you *have* reset the modem, do *NOT* plug a computer into it -
in fact, don't even turn it on yet. Instead, nip out to any PC shop
and buy a small ethernet switch (not a plain 'hub', you need a device
with its own valid MAC address). Plug this into the cable modem, and
your Macs into the switch.

It is important that you power everything up in *just* the right
order, or you will have to start this all over again with another
factory-reset of the modem. This is the order:

- the switch
- your main computer (the BW)
- the cable-modem
- your laptop, and any other computers you may have hooked in.

... and even then, there is no guarantee this will work, depending on
both the ISP and the cable-modem.

What I suggest you do instead, is buy a second ethernet interface for
your snurftower (hey, it's blue and white, and cute - byte me ;)),
leave it hooked up to the cable modem as you have done normally, and
hook the laptop to the new ethernet socket. Then, go to your System
Preferences, open Networks, and then to your onboard ethernet
interface. Select Share this connection. This will now activate OS
X's built-in internet connection sharing and DHCP system - any
computer(s) plugged into your *new* ethernet port on the BW *should*
be able to see and use the internet that's coming in from your cable
modem.

Re: WallStreet DVD-ROM issue, perchance?

2006-02-02 Thread Udo Huth
Also - if my display can't keep vertical and needs something heavy to
lean against, does it mean my hinges are pushing up the daisies?

Well, it means the hinges are broken. Nothing one can do about that except
replacing the hinges.

I bought a used Wallstreet off ebay for the price two new hinges would have
cost me and had the complete screen replaced. As I had a 14 screen and the
bought Wallstreet only had a 13 screen I now oughta have the only
Wallstreet which lets you select screen resolutions in the Monitor control
panel... - so the technician told me.

Another thing: I've read a couple of scare stories about how hard
drives with more capacity than 30-40 gig may not be too friendly with
the WallStreet . . . should I look no further than the 40-gig
Travelstar that I mentioned in a previous post?

A 20 GB hard disk is working just fine inside my Wallstreet.

If you already have a (presumably faulty) dvd/cd drive for the

DVD-ROM modules with their accompanying PC-Cards are about as common
as chickens with molars. If you can get a working set for the price
mentioned, you are probably lucky.

Yep. Bad hinges are a well known feature of the G3 Series machines.
The only real fix seems to be replacement. I have seen stainless steel
ones being sold, but too many $$ for me. A stack of books behind the
display is much cheaper!

I have a 40gig Western Digital In a WS/300. Seems to work well, but
I haven't had it all that long and don't use them machine all that
much.

Should have got me a Pismo, by the look of it. But, well, I have this
WallStreet and it's here to stay, and I intend to use the living hell
out of it. So, yeah . . .

Any idea about how to procure a budget-conscious bootable DVDROM drive
for the WallStreet? I'm being offered one for 80 USD, which somehow
strikes as a ripoff, especially considering that the postage will eat
 up another 30 . . . I don't think I'm ready to spend that much for a
 mere DVDROM; ideas, anyone?

Also - if my display can't keep vertical and needs something heavy to
lean against, does it mean my hinges are pushing up the daisies? I've
seen an excellent HOWTO that covered the issue extensively, but I am
somewhat squeamish about attempting it myself. RAM, HDD, whatever, but
the display . . . scary. Or is it some other problem that can be more
 easily soluble?

Another thing: I've read a couple of scare stories about how hard
drives with more capacity than 30-40 gig may not be too friendly with
the WallStreet . . . should I look no further than the 40-gig
Travelstar that I mentioned in a previous post?

 Cheerio,

 Mick.

Re: WallStreet DVD-ROM issue, perchance?

2006-02-01 Thread James Sanderson
I was able to get a Pismo on eBay for $200+s/h. I did spend money to
add memory and move to a 500 MHz processor. I think that I got
'lucky' because the comp's description included a pink-light-on-start-
up-but -goes-away-after-a-seconds issue. The latter hasn't bothered
me in the least. I've priced out the replacement. I think I'll be
with this one for a while.
I was happy with the WS for basic internet surfing and note-taking.
When I decided I wanted to use Keynote for several school
presentation, the WS became obsolete.

Cheers,

Try Powerbook Parts for new replacement steel hinges. They will also
replace them for you, if you don't want to try it yourself.

I have no personal experience with them, but their name comes up
whenever someone needs new hinges.

WallStreet doesn't completely start

2006-01-19 Thread Frisco Del Rosario
What could be wrong with this WallStreet (10.2.8, 512 RAM,
Sonnet G4 processor) ?

At startup, the desktop doesn't fully load. Sometimes the
menu bar comes into view, sometimes not, but the weird
thing that whatever is in view -- clock, battery indicator,
menu bar -- the items open on click, but don't do anything.
Same with the Dock. If I mouse over the Dock, it appears,
but the icons don't work.

If I start in OS 9.2.1, it works OK, but freezes
intermittently, which is also weird because that never
happens when it's running in Classic (but that's actually
different, isn't that true?).

2006-01-19 Thread Gary Goldberg

I had a similar problem when my Sonnet G4/500
CPU was installed under OS 9.1 (upgraded from 8.1 at the
same time). The problem was that the heat shield wasn't
properly installed and thus the heat during bootup became
too great and the machine froze.

I'll have to check the tech doc... But as I recall, I think the
Wallstreet is like the Lombard -- the power circuity, including the
jack is on a small i/o card. Depending on how the jack is damaged,
you might be able to fix it. Otherwise just replace the i/o card.

The power jack is on the Sound/AC in board of the Wallstreet, IIRC
(Thankfully I haven't had to open mine in a very long time.) If you're
handy with the soldering gun, you can probably just fix the cracked
solder connections on the bottom of the jack that are likely causing
the problem.

99% of the time that's the fix.

If you're not a fan of soldering then you can take your chances with a
new Sound/power board on eBay or the swap list.

Good luck!

2006-01-12 Thread Debra Platt
I have a Wallstreet that had that problem. There is a known issue with
the Wallstreet jacks. I took it apart and soldered the board, and so
far, it now works fine. You can google info for the fix and a
take-apart guide from PBFixit.com.

There is actually an AC board on it that can be replaced. It attaches to the
motherboard. Pretty easy fix but does require disassembly. These can be
found pretty cheap on eBay also.

Re: Can you fix a wallstreet power jack?

2006-01-12 Thread Tom and Lisa Peters

I have a wallstreet I got from ebay with a broken power jack. I am
trying to return it for a refund, but can this jack be fixed? If I
wedge it upwards, it will charge, but to do a perma-fix, can you
replace this or do you have to replace the logic board?
Thanks
Tom

Easy as pie. Usually.

Re: Advice Needed - Wallstreet upgrade

2006-01-06 Thread Frank Dutra

I have installed 10.3 on my Wallstreet with the help of XPostFacto
and it worked well after working out two hitches that were known at
the time.
One was related to the colors on the screen (a lot of purple :-))
and was solved by removing a specific file (don't remember exactly
but the issue was well documented).
The other was the lack of built-in support for the ejection of
cardbus cards (solved by downloading a kext that someone had
prepared).
After that, it has been working strong ever since and is now running
10.3.9 (using just the regular Software Update feature for all
updates since the initial install).

Thanks Luis

It's beginning to seem like making a bootable copy with Xpostfacto on
my G4 with the Panther DVD, then cloning it to the Wallstreet with
CarbonCopyCloner may be possible, though fraught with peril... maybe
I'm better off buying the Panther cd without iLife.

I don't know. It might work if you pre install XpostFacto (assuming
you are talking about 10.3 here).

Anyone else on this one for a series II Wallstreet? It didn't need
XpostFacto to install OS 10.2.8, being officially supported by Apple.
I'm hoping to get OS 10.3 from Apple with the iLife suite on DVD

not to, because I have 4 macs running Tiger now, and my Wallstreet is

G3 Wallstreet CDROM drive tray won't open all the way

2006-01-03 Thread Edward Felberbaum
I recently became the proud owner of an Apple G3 Wallstreet. The CDROM
drive, M2451, has a problem where when the drive is opened, the tray only
slides out *half way*. The tray only extends to the point where about half
of the spindle (the center part that grabs onto the CD hole) is visible.

Out of desperation I carefully removed the top metal cover of the CD drive
and looked around inside but as of yet I do not see what is preventing the
tray from opening fully.

Has anyone had this problem and solved it?

Aside from this problem, the drive works well because I was able to install
Mac OS 8.6. You may ask how did I manage to do this when the drive only
opens half way? Apparently when I first got the machine, the CD tray DID
extend far enough to let me insert a CD - but I don't remember seeing the
tray opening all the way, but it must have because it is almost impossible
to insert a CD with the tray half open, without scratching the CD.

I hope I can fix this problem and not have to buy a new CD drive.

Thanks.

Eddie

Advice Needed - Wallstreet upgrade

2005-12-31 Thread Frank Dutra

Hi All, new to this list... seems like a great place.

My dilemma is with a partially restored series 11 (266) Wallstreet.
Last year I put in a 40 gb HD, extra ram (256 total), a USB (ADS 2.0
turbo) card, and an 802.11b Wireless Lan card, running OS 9.2.2 and
!0.2. Worked great for my purposes at that time but I know find
myself traveling more and hoping to use it in the field for capturing
video/audio files from a quick cam or other USB camera. I've also hit
the OS 10.2.8 bump on my desktop and plan to upgrade soon to 10.3,
and was hoping to keep the 2 machines synched. I'm also still fairly
dependent on Classic for my older Apps, though I'd be willing to dual
boot on the laptop if need be.

Is anyone running !0.3 daily with a Wallstreet? Will I need the extra
ram (expensive low profile) ?
Can I use Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate my G4 desktop (dual 450
gigabit ethernet) without any problems (missing drivers/control
panels)?

I also need a new pram battery (expensive) and new main batteries
(expensive) and when I recently upgraded to 10.2.8, I lost my USB
connectivity to my external OWC Elite HD and also took a speed hit.
(might this be the dead pram battery?)

Is it worth the expense of upgrading further or should I bite the
bullet and forget the whole idea of 10.3, synching, and video capture
on this venerable old machine? (love torturing Windows users by
telling them it's a 1998 model!)

Thanks in advance,

Frank

I use 10.3.9 on my wallstreet. It works quite well. More RAM is
better, and when running X, I recommend maxing out the RAM.

I have 10.3.9 on three Wallstreet IIs, 256-320 Mb RAM and 20-40 Gb.
Wireless and USB on them too. Works well although one wigged out and
took some finessing with XpostFacto to restore to operations (no data
loss though)

Re: Wallstreet questions

2005-12-30 Thread Udo Huth
ever made for this machine? Second, can the lower
RAM chip be replace, if so how is this done?
Hi,

yes, the lower RAM card can be replaced. You have to remove the processor
board.

Before you begin, remove
the following:
€ AC adapter
€ Expansion bay modules
€ Keyboard
€ Heat sink
€ Hard drive
1 Position a nylon tool under the center of the right side of the board and
lift up to release it.
2 Pull the microprocessor board to the right.
Replacement Note:
Align the tabs on the left side of the board with the slots on the top case
stiffener, then press down firmly on the right side of the board to seat the
connector.
Replacement Caution:
The microprocessor board can be partially inserted and the computer will
still function. However, over time, heat will cause the microprocessor board
to lose contact and can cause the system to have intermittent problems such
as no booting.
Therefore, check proper installation by pressing on the microprocessor board
connector a second time to make sure the board is fully seated.

I really don't think you need to remove the hard drive - Having it
out of the way makes it easier to get something under the edge of the
card to lever it up, but I'm sure that I only removed the hard drive
one or 2 times and I pulled the processor card many more times than

Loading 10.2 on Wallstreet II 512m

2005-12-30 Thread shawn
I can get to the point where it is loading the final stages of disc 1
and my screen goes buggy and does not allow me to continue, either the
screen will wash out or will have funky color changes. I have tried to
use xpostfacto and get even less far (barely goes into the splash
install screen before having a screen issues). I am so frustruated at
this point since I know other people have gotten this to work. I have
zero problems using this laptop under OS9 and have over 2hrs of battery
life and a wonderful colored screen. What gives, I need help in a big
way and am open to any suggestions, or maybe even trade this for an
iBook 500 or higher, just am really frustrated and wish I had never
sold my G3 900 such a fool (but needed money at the time, always listen
to your wife she told me not to)

I believe this video issue is discussed at length on the XPostFacto
forums:

http://forum.macsales.com/

There is an option in the XPostFacto Options menu for using patched
Rage NDRV which I believe addresses this issue?

Good luck! Kris

Re: wallstreet questions

2005-12-29 Thread James Sanderson

Shawn,

I have worked on a couple of WS, both I and II. I would suggest
avoiding OS X.2 altogether. I had sleep and monitor issues on both
machines that were not resolved until I upgraded to Panther installed
using XPostFacto 3. IIRC, there were others on the list had similar
issues. If you want OS X, go to Panther rather than Jaguar.

Re: wallstreet questions

2005-12-29 Thread James Sanderson
I would second this advice. Those old 233MHz processors don't cut
it. Get the second generation processors. I was informed by one on
this list that second generation processors would work on the first
generation machines, not vice versa. If you were to seek an upgrade
path to G4dom, this would allow you that option later down the road.

2005-12-28 Thread themacuser
Not that I know of, but you could try googling it. I only remember
back from when that model was new, as well as it saying in my Apple
Service Source manuals. - something like Screen flickers
intermittently or displays a series of lines: If the display is a
13.3 model and squeezing the left bezel causes it to stop, and if
the model number is between something and something then the part
should be replaced with some part number as a warranty repair.

There was at least one 3rd party CD-R or CD-RW drive made for the
wallstreet and you can find one on Ebay every now and then.

The WS also takes a lower RAM slot stick, just like the Lombard. Low-profile.

Re: Wallstreet hinge replacement by PBParts

2005-12-24 Thread Gary Goldberg

I went for the $69 hinge replacement service (plus $27
shipping) from PB Parts in Scottsdale, Ariz. My Wallstreet
G3 returned today, and it's like a new, usable 'puter. The
screen won't flop forward or back anymore, which means it's
a traveling companion again.

Plus, the PBParts people fixed some tiny things for free!

I doubted whether I should invest another 90-odd dollars in
a 10-year-old G3 Powerbook, but now I am quite glad that I
did. My highest recommendation for PBParts to other users
plagued by the stupid Wallstreet hinge problem.

A note of caution is merited here:

I used PBParts to have my hinges replaced, too. Less than
a year later, the repair failed. I had to pay for shipping to
them, but they admitted it was something we haven't
seen before and send it back quickly overnight at their
expense.

Further, another year later and the hinges are a little wobbly
now: I can't keep the lid at less than a 90-degree angle or
it'll slam shut (I'd prefer to keep it just a bit open, as I have
a 17 monitor behind it which I use instead of the WS's screen).

PBParts thinks it's the screen support (not the hinges itself),
but has agreed to consider it a repair warranty issue if it
needs further work.

So far, it's stayed this way for 5 months with no worsening.

Re: Wallstreet hinge repair

2005-12-08 Thread Sionnach Aisling

--- Andrew in Ann Arbor [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Again, I'll restate here becasue I think it's
important... If your hinges are loose, DO NOT just
continue to use them and see how long it will last.
How long will it last until what?? Until it breaks
completely? Then what happens? It gets more loose?
More play opening and closing and the screen won't
stay in the position you want? Those are the least of
your worries. If that hinge breaks (and they do) and
a sharp portion of the metal pierces a video cable
running through the hinge or some other cable coming
off the mother board it's gong to take out another
component... it could short and take out many more
components and that, I promise you, will be very
costly.

I had the hinges on my wallstreet replaced by
 pbparts for about $70 and
they've been fine since then (3 years).

That doesn't sound like a bad deal. I really want to
think i was able to find the hinges on ebay for around
$50 and do the repair myself. (Though I've been
repairing many models of laptops for years and am very
comfortable with doing so.) If your not
comfortable... that sounds like a good deal.
Likewise, if your going to find them on ebay... make
sure you knwo if it's the left or right hinge and make
sure your getting the hinge for the proper size
display.

Wallstreet hinge repair

2005-12-08 Thread Garry Hamblin
Thanks to all to answered my previous post regarding loose hinges. I
contact PB parts who make/install the steel replacement hinges that
everyone seems to be recommending. This is their response.

We don't recommend doing the screen support repair until the hinges have
actually failed. The main reason we recommend waiting is that the play
you

have described is quite typical, and has little to do with the actual
failure. When screen supports fail, it is usually sudden, and
complete.
Your existing hinges may last several more years. Another thing to
consider
is that we will eliminate most of the play when we do the rebuild, but
it

normally returns in a few months. There is nothing that can be done to
permanently eliminate the play.

PBParts

Got to like a business that doesn't pressure sell. Anyway, I will
leave the hinges for now.

Anybody know of a DVD module that works with OSX?

Re: Got a new Wallstreet and have some questions

2005-12-07 Thread Sionnach Aisling
Garry,

The looseness you feel on the LCD display is in fact a
bad hinge. If you are lucky, it may just be starting
to loosen. If this is the case, simply taking the
machine apart and tightening the hinge will fix the
problem. If you are unlucky like I was the damage
will already be done and the hinge will be physically
broken... Of course, at that point, there is little
you can do but replace the hinge. The hinges, if I
remember correctly, span the height of teh display, so
you need to get not only the right hinge for your
display size, but also know if it's right or left...
they are different.

I believe I finally scored a hinge for mine from ebay
- good guy, but I can't remember his name it's been so
long. I think I just went ahead and replaced both
hinges in lieu of anyhting happening to the other side
as long as I had it open. If I recall... they
weren't easy to find and weren't cheap either. I
think I paid somewhere around $50-$80 for both
hinges...

I do recommend replacing the hinge and not just
letting it stay loose because you want to save the
. A loose hinge can easily pinch and short a
display cable and cause you much more of a problem
than you currently have.

Re: Wallstreet hinge repair

2005-12-07 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

Greetings. I finally managed to score a good deal on a 233/cache, 14.1
Wallstreet off E-bay. It arrived a couple of days ago in better
condition than the E-bay seller advertised. Just goes to show that not
everyone is a crook I suppose.

Anyway, I have some questions.

The display hinges seem kind of 'loose' in that the display has about
an inch of free play when open. Is this a sign of the hinges getting
ready to fail?

If so, where is the best place to get them replaced/repaired?

1 travel seems a bit much but it might work that way for a while yet.
Or it might not.
My father in law's wallstreet has one broken hinge and it's quite
inconvenient.
I had the hinges on my wallstreet replaced by pbparts for about $70 and
they've been fine since then (3 years).

Check here for details:
http://www.pbparts.com/shop?
keywords=hinge+repairsearch_request_button=+Search+
You can also buy new OEM hinges and replace them yourself but I think
it might actually cost more than having PBparts install aftermarket
hinges.

Andrew in Ann Arbor
technology is the answer, what was the question?

Also this PB came with only 32M ram, which I would like to expand. I
understand that it uses SDR Sodimms the same as an early iMac.
Correct? Or can any SDR sodimm be used up to 256m? Anybody tried a
512 sodimm in one of these?

Is there a DVD module available that will work under OSX?

Thanks for your help.

Drive Options for Wallstreet

2005-11-27 Thread Barry Muller

I have managed to lose my CD ROM Drive for my
Wallstreet that I've had since new (I bought the
floppy option at the time - and that is what is in the
bay). I would like to upgrade to OS 9 and give the
book to my parents - so I need the CD Drive.

What are my options now that I need to purchase a new
drive? I'd rather buy a new drive with perhaps the
capacity to burn CDs if the price is about the same.

Of course, if someone on the list really wants an
Apple floppy drive for their Wallstreet I'd consider a
trade for their spare CD ROM drive.

Thanks in advance,

Barry

Replacement cd-rom drives can be had for about $20-$30 on Ebay, shipped. You
could opt for a DVD-rom drive for about $10-$20 dollars more, but you'll need
the DVD PC card for the Wallstreet to show DVD movies.

The Wallstreet's design on the cd/dvd module makes swapping in 3rd party
media drives impossible. VST, I think, used to make a cd-rw module for the
Wallstreet, but they are rare and priced accordingly. The last one I saw went
for
$100+ on Ebay.

Howdy,

If you can wait a couple of weeks (I teach and am in seminary, and will
be up to my eyebrows in work for both until the 16th), I have a DVD
module for the Wallstreet you can have for free. Sorry, I don't have
the required pcmia card you need with it to watch DVD videos, but it
works just ducky for reading CD or DVD format software. I bought it for
a project some time ago, but ended up getting a Pismo, which has a
completely different drive bay.

If you want it, let me know your address, and I'll send it to you.

(ported?) from Red Hat at some point. YDL's package manager (yum), is
available in Fedora, and I remember it being fairly easy to use

Which kernel version? I was thinking maybe an older version would
run better on the older hardware, if I can find one.

If your using it as a laptop on-the-go (as opposed to server), I
think that most of the stuff that you'd probably want (proper sleep,
etc.) will be in the 2.6 kernel, aka the newer one.

Security wise, both 2.4 and 2.6 are kept up-to-date, afaik.

But yeah, in general most of the distro's you've discussed have
fairly good docs. For example, Gentoo's is very good: http://
www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml

So good luck, good googling, and always read the docs.

Wallstreet and Duo

2005-10-28 Thread TVirkkala
I have a Wallstreet I. I used to have a bunch of Duos, before they were
stolen. My Wallstreet runs on a Yo-Yo power adapter. I need another
adapter. And I just found this:

Adapter_W0QQitemZ5823935011QQcategoryZ80064QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It says that the Duos and the Wallstreets use the same power connector.

CAN THIS BE CORRECT?

Is it possible that my Duo power adapters (I've several) can run my
Wallstreet?

Yes, I have run Duos, Wallstreets, and Lombards from
the Duo power adapter. The only problem I have found
is the Duo P/S does not have as high a current
output, so it may not charge your battery while the
computer is awake. It will take longer to charge but
other than that there is no problem.

Completely correct.

The same connector is used on 1400, 3400, Wallstreets, Lombards, Pismos,
Clamshells.

It's the same connector but a lower wattage adapter.

Personally I'd advise getting the correct adapter - but the DUO adapter will
tide you over.

Up to a year ago I had been using a WallStreet as my main machine.
It had a 40Gb drive, 256 Mb RAM, SkyLine wireless card, USB card and

http://www.macsales.com is a good source for the RAM and HD. There
are various wireless cards you can use such as Orinoco Silver or Gold
(not the CardBus models though), Farallon Skyline, Lucent, and
others. You might try http:// www.froogle.com.

I used a Skyline as it has a thin antenna which fits under the USB
card. Yes the Wallstreet is slow but it is definitely serviceable.

i tried looking in the archives, as i am sure this has
been asked before but i don't see an archives page on

Tessa,

Most of the few responses to your inquiry that I've seen so far (I'm in
digest mode) are OK as far as they go, but it seems you need much more
complete info. It sounds like you're pretty much a newbie to wi-fi
with Apple PowerBooks, so I'll try to summarize my experience as
completely as possible.

First, OS 9.2.1 is a great match for the Wallstreet and will not be as
slow as you might fear. If you have a Rev 1 Mainstreet model with no
cache it will be a bit pokey but definitely still usable. Look at the
info plate on the bottom of your WS; if there's no system configuration
summary then you have the cacheless Mainstreet. My Rev 2 PDQ reads:
14.1TFT/233MHz-512K/32MB/2gb HD/4MB video/CD/Modem. For future
reference, if you have a Mainstreet don't even *THINK* about installing
OS X.

Second, the 32 MB of RAM you have now is *NOT* enough; find at least a
128 MB module to add ASAP (there are two RAM slots and one of yours is
empty). If you can afford $40-50 get a 256 MB SO-DIMM -- your
Wallstreet will love you for it.

Third, 802.11b is all the wi-fi you'll ever need; don't be suckered
into buying one of the newer 802.11g because you think newer must be
better. There are a lot of Orinoco 802.11b cards floating around, and
the best place to find cheap Orinoco wi-fi cards is ebay, plain and
simple. You'd have to hunt high and low at online retailers to find a
real deal; they're falling off the trees on ebay. Get a Silver or
Gold, and don't pay over $30 (total including shipping) for one; I paid
$24 shipped for a new-stock Gold about a year ago. (There are maybe a
dozen or more brands of 802.11b wi-fi cards that are actually Orinocos;
mine was an Enterasys RoamAbout, and even Dell sells a couple.) There
are no new software drivers for OS X, but you shouldn't need to worry
about that. Orinoco v7.2 is the latest OS 9 driver; you can Google for
a free download.

Fourth, join the LEM Swaplist ASAP! Lots of helpful Mac folks there,
buying and selling used Mac stuff.

Good luck, and happy Mac-ing!

Re: going wireless with my wallstreet

2005-10-26 Thread Chris Smith
tessa, all...

I have been going online wirelessly with my 64 MB250 Mhz Kanga G3 now
for about a month. It works like a charm, though I want to finish
increasing the resident RAM and getting a bigger hard drive. Took
finding the virtual memory sweetspot to keep it from bombing
periodically and trying out a number of browsers...the most trouble
free browser I found was Internet Explorer 5 for Mac OS 9 with double
the virtual minimum memory selected. But the essential part was
following this fantastic no brainer tutorial (thanks to
penmachine!!!):

http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html

As the article showed I could use an inexpensive Dell Truemobile 1150
80211.b WiFi card and I think it took a one click install to to a link
in the article get online! I bid on eBay for several days and having
little money I won on auction by last minute bid sniping an 1150 for
$9 -- does look humorous seeing a Dell logo sticking out of a
multiclored Apple logo'd G3 laptop, but the desktop shows a 3rd party
Orinoco gold card and there's 4 or 5 green signal strength bars at the
bottom of the screen. Wonderfull

I enjoy using this so much, I am taking the G3 on a low budget dream
trip out of country and will blog it online wirelessly, so no reason
to be satisfied with just email capability. Besides if your Dad can
surf with a 100 Mhz Winblows laptop, then don't quit until you can do
that (and more) with a Wallstreet. For instance, once online I found
an old version of iTunes (version 2.04) and also use Audion, for
Internet radio and CD's/mp3's -- all free. Sweet!

Want to trade half-recognized 256 MB SODIMMs (Wallstreet)

2005-10-17 Thread Robert Gruber
Got two sticks of 256 MB Apple SODIMMs for a good
price, and my Wallstreet sees each as 128.

I rolled the dice, and lost.

Wondering if someone has these sticks that will be
fully seen in mine for the ones which I assume will
work in many other laptops, and some iMacs, if I'm not
mistaken.

I am in the SF Bay area; I'd certainly be willing to
travel a bit to trade one stick or both, and kick in
some monetary consideration.

OWC seems to have the right ones for ~$27; I could
KICK myself.

Alternatively, I would sell and ship these if my dream
transaction doesn't materialize.

Thanks for reading.

The only LCD issue with Wallstreets I have ever noticed is that a 12 FSTN

Re: Need advice and help with wallstreet

2005-10-15 Thread Gary E Davis
Hey guys

Thank you for the replies. This problem started after I dissembled the
unit to paint the case, after putting it back together apparently a
piece of the foil from the bottom case became curled under the sound
card shorting it sometimes. I found it this afternoon when I took it
apart again. This is what caused the unit to power off sometimes when it
was moved or the screen moved.

Gary

Re: Need advice and help with wallstreet

2005-10-15 Thread R. P. Bell
Well, that makes me feel really good, Gary. Apparently, some educated guessing
gave you the motivation to tear into the Wallstreet. However, if you had
mentioned that you had early disassembled the case, I would definitely have
asked you about a misplaced part, shield or other obstruction.

Congratulations.

rb

PS Aren't Macs wonderful; what other notebooks would you tear apart for case
painting or for self-repair?
