[info-tech] Skills Iowa not a lightspeed problem
While working with a teacher, I saw it came back to the way IE 8 handles pop-ups. Even though we had them turned off for the site, after we typed in the code for taking OCT assessment, it would return to the same page. On one machine we had a message about pressing the control key, so after typing the code id, pressing the Control key (keeping it down while the next page came), it allowed the testing to start. During this we also added the site to the trusted websites, I don't know if this was needed. We did the same on another machine, with an earlier version of IE8, it worked as well, but we did not get the message about using the control key, even though it needed the control key to be pressed. All for now, Have a great weekend. Murray Gafkjen CCE

Before we get into this, understand this is an honest no holds barred review. I will use some rough and possibly insulting language, but if you read it with an open mind, I think there is some valuable information, even if it is presented rather vividly. I will likely be submitting this same review word for word to Amazon and some other sites. A few years back, there was a kid who was about 14 who had an IQ of about 40, but he could listen to a piece of music once and be able to play it on a piano note for note. This ability really made him kind of cool, but at the end of the day, you just can't escape that he's still retarded. That's the Ipad in a nutshell. Despite that, I am giving this a solid buy recommendation for schools. If that makes no sense, read on, and it will. If I try to compare this to windows 7, and I will, it's kinda worthless. The HP Slate is coming out in a couple months, and it will do everything that an IPad does, and everything that a windows 7 laptop does, and costs less, or about the same actually. If you are a computer geek, like me, then the slate is a much better product. But we use the Kindle here a lot. Mainly the kindle is used is remedial reading and special-ed because the kindle will read aloud to a student, showing them the word being pronounced. Like most programs of this nature, it's got it's problems, most notably lousy inflection and pacing. But it's no worse than anything out there, and allows virtually any book to be used without additional processing. The Ipad has a Kindle app, and though I haven't fully tested it, I have no reason to think it functions any different. Now don't get me wrong, I like the kindle, for me. But I'm not buying for me. Sure, the battery life rocks. Two weeks of a single charge, that is just awesome, the ability to buy through the cellular network without buying another account? Priceless. But the weak point on a kindle has always been it's administration. Basically, if it's on there, the kid has access to it. That includes google searches for porn. On the Ipad, if I don't want a kid to surf the internet, they don't. If I don't want them to load apps, they don't. You tube? Email? Whatever, they don't, or should I say they can't. As you all know, keeping kids out of where they do not belong is always a losing battle, special-ed is even more of a challenge than the other students. That's the cool part as far as actually useful stuff goes. Sure, there are a lot of educational apps, great, great. The predictive text feature is awful from what I've seen of it, I'm working on installing an app that is supposed to be much better. But really, that's the business end of the review. Now there's the fun stuff, or thing I should say. Google Maps is included with the Ipad, and for a damn good reason. It takes total advantage of the multitouch interface. This is beyond ubercool. This one goes straight to Geek Nirvana. I fell in lust with Google Maps, and once I showed it to my girlfriend and her daughter, they proceeded to fight over it for an hour. If you have not tried this, there is just no explaining how awesome this feature is. If I could plug in GPS, it would probably throw me into a transcendental state where I spent he next 20 years in a darkened room playing with the user interface and creating the Church of Jobs. Or at least until the battery died. Ok, so here's the summary. This is a niche market thing. It's great for schools and especially special-ed. But if you are looking for a productive device, wait for the HP Slate. --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus on the server aea8.k12.ia.us] - Archived messages from this list can be found at: http://www.mail-archive.com/info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us/ - --- [This E-mail scanned for

Just made a phone call (u of I testing) , we (I) can climb down from the tree. The neighboring table was wrong. The IEOC is the same price as the ITED's ($2.50 per student per test), so it would be $5.00 a year per student (20 dollars over the length of the grant). The video I saw talked about the controls the admin would have. It gave me the impression one could make it a intranet in relation to email (only allowing email from within the created groups). You've taken steps beyond what I have done. I would actually try the support (24/7) they banter about, and see what happens. We have an open policy on student email, but it would be interesting to see if it could be limited. They said you could shut down IM, and only have mail. Now we need to add a new test to the pot, instead of just adding a supplement to the spring. I'm guessing someone's agenda is showing, I'm not happy.(But then I was once told we were not put in this world to be happy...) Iowa Skills assessment (which has a fall/Spring component) was also turned down on the grounds it didn't have national norms. RE: [info-tech] 1:1 Question
We're entering our 5th year, with the second roll-out of new laptops this fall. We went with Lenovo laptops, the first go-around was with Gateway tablets. I wish I could say that the time just flew by, but there were too many lumps along the way. Listening to George, he's on the right track again. Keeping it simple, if possible, but we know tech isn't, nor is the network a simple VCR. If price is no object, consider the Macs. When they can control the both software/hardware solution, one would hope there would be less bugs in the system. When we started the 1:1, the district was 50-50 in the labs with the servers tilting towards Windows. Price, my experience and the superintendent's leanings had us go with PCs. The highschool teachers had pc desktops, so I didn't want to throw their experience under the bus. Besides platform, daily applications, the next biggie is the network. Biggest complaint is, I can't get on the network. Teachers are less likely to try new things if a few student can't join the group. Sometimes that's self inflicted, but it still hinders teachers. They are less likely to try it again. Dynno, NetOps, Schoolvue are great programs, but when it's only working 99% of the time with 99% of the students, you will hear about it. Ubiquitous 1:1, my true feelings will be share in person, since this listserv can be Googled and I need my job. So see ya Thursday if not before. RE: [info-tech] Teacher Websites/Sharepoint?
Been trying to create a site for the high school over the summer with Sharepoint with the addition of an application called sharepoint learning kit. This app provides the framework for a cookbook approach to making the site. Unfortunately it's open source, (with limited support from MS) and it has been a tough go. I'll be sharing it on the 22nd at the Heartland get together, I'll gladly share it on the 24th in Ft. Dodge. This is using Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 07, Jeremy's solution is much cheaper (free) which is referred to as wss 3.0 and as he said, is a service that you can enable from the server features. I think both provide the ability to run SCORM packages. (In Theory.) Well, After many redos of building the server from scratch, I'm at the point of adding data bases for additional pages. Each student will have their own webpages which will reflect class assignments, documents for class, dropbox. One of the key components is the ability to run SCORM packages made by authoring tools. This would allow the student to take online assignments (multiple choice, matching, short essay, besides other methods) and submit them. I have a very limited web background, so those of you that have messed with these things before, should have an easier go at it. It's similar to moodle. Enough, have a good evening. I'm sure a few of you will have questions concerning e-waste recycled through us. Hopefully I can cover them all in this short E-Mail Q. What happens to our 'stuff' once it has arrived at your facility? A. We break everything down into roughly 8 categories- Computers Computer Monitors TV's Printers Miscellaneous Items (VCR's, Radio's, Recording Device's, typewriters, things like this) Keyboards Mice Flat Screen Monitors From there, each category is once again broke down completely by de-manufacturing everything in house. By the time we are done, we have roughly 16 commodities ready for shredding/smelting or re-use. Q. I am concerned with the information that may be left on the hard drives even though we did a complete wipe, what do you do to insure me that my information is safe? A. We take this very seriously. We start by using our in house Veridan Hard drive de-gausser. This unit will 'fry' a hard drive in roughly 5 seconds, and any drive up to 500mb. This physically destroys the media disk located inside the drive. This deems the drive inoperable and unusable. From there, we cage drives up and transport to an undisclosed shredding facility right here in Iowa. We then recover the aluminum scrap for breakage. Q. What happens to our CRT Glass? Do you recycle it on site, and are you permitted to recycle these items? A. As I noted before, we de-manufacture everything in house. CRT Tubes are binned, weighed, and shipped to Doe Run, St Louis Mo for crushing and lead extraction. We call this Glass-to-Glass recycling.

[info-tech] ramblings from the meeting at Pokey
The head cold medication had me in a bit of a fog as I spoke yesterday. Don't know if I made much sense about how we do the yearbook at CCE. I'm sure the pundits are salivating with the first sentence. Here it goes. Last year with a commercial yearbook provider, yearbook cost just under $7000 for 100 book with 100 pages(with 6 pages of color). At that time I asked what a full color book would cost (at 2003 prices it would have been over $12,000). For the last five years, we have been using the AEA to print the book (about 100 page for about $10) and having a second company (currently http://www.dilleymfg.com/) to bind and put on a hardback cover.(for about $20 per book) A neighboring school has recently been given a quote from a commercial publishing at $ 6,000 for setup and $40 per book, which would make ours at about $ 10,000. That's a savings of $7,000 of general fund money and less stress in seeking ads for the book. We sell the book for $30, thus breaking even in the process. We've reduced the cost of our ads, but still bring in about $3,000 to be used towards software, hardware, and training materials. Again, not using general funds. We used CS 3 from Adobe for all phases of its creation. The AEA (bmclar...@aea8.k12.ia.usmailto:bmclar...@aea8.k12.ia.us) has provided us with a template which in the end is exported to a pdf. The cover for the book is also made into a pdf. They too, provided a template for sizing based upon the number of pages in the book. I do have a few samples left that I can route your way on the van. If you have more questions, I'll gladly work with you. Just drop me a line. That's about it, time to take another dose of cold medication. Murray Gafkjen Clay Central Everly

RE: [info-tech] Internet Speed
At CCE we're not on the icn's grid (we get ours from Fred and his mobile pickup), Haven't noticed irregularities with the normal website. Video streaming from UnitedStreaming is fine. Ted.com is a little slow, but they don't have a good system to buffer their material. Haven't tried other places. Do you see a pattern of site names? It could be one of the major routers taking a denial of service hit. That happened a few years ago to the S-T router, I think. I think the kids would be more willing. If KD4 could work within its typical framework (smaller OS, quicker, needs less memory), this would be interesting to test with a few groups of students. [info-tech] Good stuff today-Sharepoint
Thanks for all who shared today, we too have JMC but yet haven't seen the problem since we just started using period attendance. What I've noticed are the teachers leaving the CAE open on their desktop, then everything else takes a performance hit. Sharepoint Exchange 07- been struggling to run it on the same box (owa issues) only to find out they weren't made to be that way. Now I'll be moving Sharepoint 2007 to something new. Used the Sharepoint Learning Kit (SLK) Microsoft Learning Gateway (LG) for the templates, buggie, but learning to make it work. I hope to provide a demo user once it is flying. Again thanks for the dialogue, spent the day home with my daughter watching UnitedStreaming, hopefully her barking cough will be gone tomorrow and she can hang out with the kindergarten gang. Example question: A description of how the applicant will encourage the development and utilization of innovative strategies for the delivery of specialized or rigorous academic courses and curricula through the use of technology, including distance learning technologies, particularly for those area that would not otherwise have access to such courses and curricula due to geographical isolation or insufficient recourses. RE: [info-tech] more standardization
ViewSonic product (NextVision N4 I think it’s called) is no longer available, most of our classrooms have one. We’ve standardized a mounted viewsonic PJ656 (Current number is now PJ658) projector. The janitors clean the filters every quarter, haven’t had an issue with the lamps. (yet) We have come across 50 ft. vga cables to give the teachers some flexibility. (They don’t complain too much about the backpack rack we made for them-reels out like a garden hose) Seriously though, mounting them on the ceiling is the way to go, plus it keeps students away from them. Haven’t tried this, but I’ve been told that video works poorly with wireless setups. For the most part, they won’t be mounted. Is there a specific brand that bulbs are more reasonable on? · Is anyone using wireless connections to projectors successfully? We have a few, but the wireless network (internet) connection is given up when connecting to the wireless proj. Teachers don’t like that. · As always, price is a factor, but it seems that most of these manufacturers are making money on the bulbs, warranties and not the projector itself. Layne A.
