[info-tech] Skills Iowa not a lightspeed problem

2010-10-22 Thread Murray Gafkjen
While working with a teacher, I saw it came back to the way IE 8 handles
pop-ups. Even though we had them turned off for the site, after we typed in the
code for taking OCT assessment, it would return to the same page. On one
machine we had a message about pressing the control key, so after typing the
code id, pressing the Control key (keeping it down while the next page came),
it allowed the testing to start. During this we also added the site to the
trusted websites, I don't know if this was needed. We did the same on another
machine, with an earlier version of IE8, it worked as well, but we did not get
the message about using the control key, even though it needed the control key
to be pressed.

All for now,

Have a great weekend.

Before we get into this, understand this is an honest no holds barred
review. I will use some rough and possibly insulting language, but if
you read it with an open mind, I think there is some valuable
information, even if it is presented rather vividly. I will likely be
submitting this same review word for word to Amazon and some other
sites.

A few years back, there was a kid who was about 14 who had an IQ of
about 40, but he could listen to a piece of music once and be able to
play it on a piano note for note. This ability really made him kind of
cool, but at the end of the day, you just can't escape that he's still
retarded.

That's the Ipad in a nutshell.

Despite that, I am giving this a solid buy recommendation for schools.
If that makes no sense, read on, and it will.

If I try to compare this to windows 7, and I will, it's kinda worthless.
The HP Slate is coming out in a couple months, and it will do everything
that an IPad does, and everything that a windows 7 laptop does, and
costs less, or about the same actually. If you are a computer geek, like
me, then the slate is a much better product.

But we use the Kindle here a lot. Mainly the kindle is used is remedial
reading and special-ed because the kindle will read aloud to a student,
showing them the word being pronounced. Like most programs of this
nature, it's got it's problems, most notably lousy inflection and
pacing. But it's no worse than anything out there, and allows virtually
any book to be used without additional processing.

The Ipad has a Kindle app, and though I haven't fully tested it, I have
no reason to think it functions any different.

Now don't get me wrong, I like the kindle, for me. But I'm not buying
for me. Sure, the battery life rocks. Two weeks of a single charge, that
is just awesome, the ability to buy through the cellular network without
buying another account? Priceless.

But the weak point on a kindle has always been it's administration.
Basically, if it's on there, the kid has access to it. That includes
google searches for porn.

On the Ipad, if I don't want a kid to surf the internet, they don't. If
I don't want them to load apps, they don't. You tube? Email? Whatever,
they don't, or should I say they can't. As you all know, keeping kids
out of where they do not belong is always a losing battle, special-ed is
even more of a challenge than the other students.

That's the cool part as far as actually useful stuff goes. Sure, there
are a lot of educational apps, great, great. The predictive text feature
is awful from what I've seen of it, I'm working on installing an app
that is supposed to be much better. But really, that's the business end
of the review.

Now there's the fun stuff, or thing I should say.

Google Maps is included with the Ipad, and for a damn good reason. It
takes total advantage of the multitouch interface. This is beyond
ubercool. This one goes straight to Geek Nirvana. I fell in lust with
Google Maps, and once I showed it to my girlfriend and her daughter,
they proceeded to fight over it for an hour. If you have not tried this,
there is just no explaining how awesome this feature is. If I could plug
in GPS, it would probably throw me into a transcendental state where I
spent he next 20 years in a darkened room playing with the user
interface and creating the Church of Jobs.

Or at least until the battery died.

Ok, so here's the summary.

This is a niche market thing. It's great for schools and especially
special-ed. But if you are looking for a productive device, wait for the
HP Slate.

[info-tech] neat game on change

2010-04-19 Thread Murray Gafkjen
Came across this video by chance this morning, shared it with a group of
students, then realized it was a gold mine.
http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/jane_mcgonigal_gaming_can_make_a_better_world.html

She will speak about a game site on global social change,
www.urgentevoke.comhttp://www.urgentevoke.com/ which uses gaming technique to
provide problem solving skills via web 2.0-3.0, don't really know the full
extent of the gaming tools. (Don't know if a Red Dragon will emerge) A quick
read made me think about how to apply some of the suggestions locally to the
school technology, these ideas haven't jelled yet.. It uses Graphic Novels to
set the mission for the students (staff) to wander on the mission. If gaming is
not an interest, it's worth listening to the Ted video to see what some of our
students are doing. (And a 1:1 won't increase this?)
 Game expires May 12th.
Didn't think this would fit on a tweet.

Lance is correct. Depending on the unit the mic plug is a RJ45 or an RJ45 with
an offset release clip.

The only way I think it woul work would be to connect the polycom to the
computer with a RCA to 1/8 mini plug. The drawback is that you have to use the
whole polycom to get the audio.

longer have it integrated into our network nor do we have a compatible polycom

[info-tech] polycom

2010-03-12 Thread Murray Gafkjen
Brought the Polycom home, my daughter enjoyed seeing herself on the TV. I was
able to figure out how to run the sound from the laptop through the system.
(nice sound for a laptop-selected VCR in the camera setting), but was not able
to figure out how to control the microphone from the laptop, I'm guessing it
not possible. Scott only mentioned the sound in his posting. I was able to see
the Polycom lobby in Austin, some dark room in Ft. Dodge (Jeremy's closet???),
but beyond that, not much more.

This begs the question, how can this expensive hardware be used to further
Life, Liberty, and the American Way.

Been looking at the material for Microsoft's l...@edu offering. What the
addition of Sharepoint Live for next year, it's a tempting offer. We have a
.com we use for our school's web site, so we would not have to entangle our
k12.ia.us with the routing. They say it's free, and will remain free, but it is
still Microsoft. They have an easy feature to turn off chat, (with google, it
is still a struggle). Just throwing this out there...

The video I saw talked about the controls the admin would have. It gave me the
impression one could make it a intranet in relation to email (only allowing
email from within the created groups). You've taken steps beyond what I have
done. I would actually try the support (24/7) they banter about, and see what
happens.

We have an open policy on student email, but it would be interesting to see if
it could be limited. They said you could shut down IM, and only have mail.
Don't know if they means we would be using our own tools for that or if it
would be within their system.

Thanks for the input, and testing their stuff.

Hey all,
We are trying to use l...@edu accounts for email with about 65 students.
We have the site setup, however, the way Microsoft is doing this, if I open up
the live accounts, I am also opening up the ability for students to check
Hotmail and msn mail, etc. I don’t want kids to check their hotmail, I just
want the email account I’m giving them to be accessible.
Google mail keeps these things separate.
We are using lightspeed for filtering, any ideas out there?

Nope, I guessing it will be a part of the Office2010 roll-out. Somehow
Dreamspeak is also a part of this, which has trial software and training. I
think I heard the live versions will be free to schools. Don’t know how “rich”
of an application these will be. Haven’t looked at googled docs to have a good
comparions. Guess I need to do some more homework on the next snow day.
Speaking of such, we still have a few more loads left…

They currently have something called workspaces which sharepoint will replace

Been looking at the material for Microsoft’s l...@edu offering. What the
addition of Sharepoint Live for next year, it’s a tempting offer. We have a
.com we use for our school’s web site, so we would not have to entangle our
k12.ia.us with the routing. They say it’s free, and will remain free, but it is
still Microsoft. They have an easy feature to turn off chat, (with google, it
is still a struggle). Just throwing this out there…

Now we need to add a new test to the pot, instead of just adding a supplement
to the spring. I'm guessing someone's agenda is showing, I'm not happy.(But
then I was once told we were not put in this world to be happy...) Iowa Skills
assessment (which has a fall/Spring component) was also turned down on the
grounds it didn't have national norms. (I didn't know the MAP or IEOC did)

As for Pearson, I'm just trying to take the high road and redirect my

again. ( I wonder if we can exchange snow days for testing days)

The last ICN meeting I went to on December 16th stated that ITEDs
we not going to be acceptable. They also made a change and said you could
either do fall or spring testing with ITBS. Before, it was spring only.

What I haven't heard for sure yet is if you can pay for your
additional tested with your grant money that we should be using to better our
education, not the testing of it. Has that been said yet?

As for Drew Pearson, not sure that I have enough information to

RE: [info-tech] 1:1 Question

2009-10-26 Thread Murray Gafkjen
We're entering our 5th year, with the second roll-out of new laptops
this fall. We went with Lenovo laptops, the first go-around was with Gateway
tablets. I wish I could say that the time just flew by, but there were too
many lumps along the way. Listening to George, he's on the right track
again. Keeping it simple, if possible, but we know tech isn't, nor is the
network a simple VCR.
If price is no object, consider the Macs. When they can control the
both software/hardware solution, one would hope there would be less bugs in
the system. When we started the 1:1, the district was 50-50 in the labs with
the servers tilting towards Windows. Price, my experience and the
superintendent's leanings had us go with PCs. The highschool teachers had pc
desktops, so I didn't want to throw their experience under the bus.
Besides platform, daily applications, the next biggie is the
network. Biggest complaint is, I can't get on the network. Teachers are
less likely to try new things if a few student can't join the group.
Sometimes that's self inflicted, but it still hinders teachers. They are
less likely to try it again. Dynno, NetOps, Schoolvue are great programs,
but when it's only working 99% of the time with 99% of the students, you
will hear about it.
Ubiquitous 1:1, my true feelings will be share in person, since this
listserv can be Googled and I need my job. So see ya Thursday if not before.

RE: [info-tech] Teacher Websites/Sharepoint?

2009-09-15 Thread Murray Gafkjen
Been trying to create a site for the high school over the summer with
Sharepoint with the addition of an application called sharepoint learning
kit. This app provides the framework for a cookbook approach to making the
site. Unfortunately it's open source, (with limited support from MS) and it
has been a tough go. I'll be sharing it on the 22nd at the Heartland get
together, I'll gladly share it on the 24th in Ft. Dodge. This is using
Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 07, Jeremy's solution is much cheaper
(free) which is referred to as wss 3.0 and as he said, is a service that you
can enable from the server features. I think both provide the ability to run
SCORM packages. (In Theory.)

Well, After many redos of building the server from scratch, I'm at the
point of adding data bases for additional pages. Each student will have
their own webpages which will reflect class assignments, documents for
class, dropbox. One of the key components is the ability to run SCORM
packages made by authoring tools. This would allow the student to take
online assignments (multiple choice, matching, short essay, besides other
methods) and submit them.

I have a very limited web background, so those of you that have messed
with these things before, should have an easier go at it. It's similar to
moodle.

Enough, have a good evening.

Hi,

Is anyone using sharepoint for teachers website/posting documents, etc.?
Some of our staff members are asking for sharepoint type abilities to post
documents, etc. Do you have a link to a teachers site that does a good job
with it that you can send me? Thanks for any suggestions/advice. Needs to be
very easy to use with little or no HTML coding, etc. Thanks!

[info-tech] sql permissions

2009-09-06 Thread Murray Gafkjen
I've been trying to add a sharepoint 07 database to sql 05. Been getting
login failed for user nt authority/network service running on Window Serv
08. I'm guessing the service account didn't have enough privilege to get the
job done.

I've looked at the Component Services gui, and found where in my computer
properties I can add permissions for access and launching, but don't know
enough to take . Any suggestions.

Hope you're having a great weekend.

RE: [info-tech] Macintosh to Win 03

I went back to the Computer manager, and saw new tasks, so I followed the
wizard. (I set up the folder manually the first time, so I unshared it.) It
gave a window that referred to the mac share which was not available manually.
Simple solution, but sure took a lot of head scratching. I wonder if I'll
remember this the next time I have to do it. I'll guess I'll just have to
follow the wizard.

Had to rebuild a window 03 server which had services for Mac on it. Upon the
rebuild, can’t remember the trick for it to see the uam volume.

1. I’ve added services through the control panel

2. I’ve published it through the server manager, (there wasn’t a special
section for macs)

3. I’ve added the guest account to the volume (enabled it in the active
directory)

4. This machine is not a domain controller, could that be a factor???

5. The client is running 10.2.6

Thanks for any input. Currently the machines can not see any servers…

Do you know if a lot of schools in Iowa use the Lightspeed product? If so the

RE: [info-tech] Filtering and IEP students

2009-04-09 Thread Murray Gafkjen
Don't remember if you have lightspeed? They have a product for parents (if
their district is using it) to provide filtering at home on a per user
bases-this is slightly different from their lightspeed guide which would
blanket the entire district. (no, I don't get a commission)

Ok I was just told that I need to have laptops for two students to
take home, due to their IEP.. Ok fine. There needs to be a filter on
their internet traffic when they are not at school... Not so fine. I
need to have the laptop ready for Wednesday at the latest. Oh yeah, it
needs to be free. Ideas?
Laptops are MacBooks running 10.5

any drive up to 500mb.

Once again this year during Earth Week, April 20th thru April 24th Phoenix
E-Waste Solutions LLC in Marshalltown Iowa will be holding an E-Cycling Drive
for Schools located throughout all of Iowa. This E-Cycling drive is geared
towards reducing and diverting toxic wastes from area landfills.

Recycling Fee Schedule:

CRT Computer Monitors: $6.00 Each
Flat Pannel Computer Monitors: $5.00 each
Desktop Printers: $2.00 each
PC's, Miscellanious items such as: Keyboards, mice, speakers, cables, overhead
projectors are accepted at no charge.

Collection will take place during the week of April 20th. Items must be
palletized and wrapped for trucking. Please contact Brett or Mike with Phoenix
E-Waste at 1-641-753-7200 or e-mail us at
pesoluti...@iowatelecom.netmailto:pesoluti...@iowatelecom.net to schedule a
pickup or for further questions.

I'm sure a few of you will have questions concerning e-waste recycled through
us. Hopefully I can cover them all in this short E-Mail

Q. What happens to our 'stuff' once it has arrived at your facility?
A. We break everything down into roughly 8 categories-
Computers
Computer Monitors
TV's
Printers
Miscellaneous Items (VCR's, Radio's, Recording Device's, typewriters, things
like this)
Keyboards
Mice
Flat Screen Monitors

From there, each category is once again broke down completely by
de-manufacturing everything in house. By the time we are done, we have
roughly 16 commodities ready for shredding/smelting or re-use.

Q. I am concerned with the information that may be left on the hard drives even
though we did a complete wipe, what do you do to insure me that my information
is safe?

A. We take this very seriously. We start by using our in house Veridan Hard
drive de-gausser. This unit will 'fry' a hard drive in roughly 5 seconds, and
any drive up to 500mb. This physically destroys the media disk located inside
the drive. This deems the drive inoperable and unusable. From there, we cage
drives up and transport to an undisclosed shredding facility right here in
Iowa. We then recover the aluminum scrap for breakage.

Q. What happens to our CRT Glass? Do you recycle it on site, and are you
permitted to recycle these items?

A. As I noted before, we de-manufacture everything in house. CRT Tubes are
binned, weighed, and shipped to Doe Run, St Louis Mo for crushing and lead
extraction. We call this Glass-to-Glass recycling.

Is there wireless software on them, like Belkin (?), or something that is
taking control of the wireless instead of the Windows administration of the
wireless? We ran into that here. All I did was either remove or disable that
software, and then Windows took over control of the wireless, and I had no more

[info-tech] ramblings from the meeting at Pokey

2009-03-20 Thread Murray Gafkjen
The head cold medication had me in a bit of a fog as I spoke yesterday. Don't
know if I made much sense about how we do the yearbook at CCE. I'm sure the
pundits are salivating with the first sentence. Here it goes.

Last year with a commercial yearbook provider, yearbook cost just under $7000
for 100 book with 100 pages(with 6 pages of color). At that time I asked what a
full color book would cost (at 2003 prices it would have been over $12,000).

For the last five years, we have been using the AEA to print the book (about
100 page for about $10) and having a second company (currently
http://www.dilleymfg.com/) to bind and put on a hardback cover.(for about $20
per book)

A neighboring school has recently been given a quote from a commercial
publishing at $ 6,000 for setup and $40 per book, which would make ours at
about $ 10,000. That's a savings of $7,000 of general fund money and less
stress in seeking ads for the book. We sell the book for $30, thus breaking
even in the process.

We've reduced the cost of our ads, but still bring in about $3,000 to be used
towards software, hardware, and training materials. Again, not using general
funds.

We used CS 3 from Adobe for all phases of its creation. The AEA
(bmclar...@aea8.k12.ia.usmailto:bmclar...@aea8.k12.ia.us) has provided us
with a template which in the end is exported to a pdf.

The cover for the book is also made into a pdf. They too, provided a template
for sizing based upon the number of pages in the book.

I do have a few samples left that I can route your way on the van. If you have
more questions, I'll gladly work with you. Just drop me a line.

That's about it, time to take another dose of cold medication.

At CCE we're not on the icn's grid (we get ours from Fred and his mobile

don't have a good system to buffer their material. Haven't tried other places.

Do you see a pattern of site names? It could be one of the major routers taking

[info-tech] Is it Windows 7 or KDE 4?: Insight - Software - ZDNet Australia

http://www.zdnet.com.au/insight/software/soa/Is-it-Windows-7-or-KDE-4-/0,139023769,339294810,00.htm

More fuel for the open source gang, sure would be tempting to switch but having
teachers change, that's another story. I think the kids would be more willing.
If KD4 could work within its typical framework (smaller OS, quicker, needs less
memory), this would be interesting to test with a few groups of students. One
could ask for volunteers from the students to see who would be interested. (The
bigger hassle would be keeping these Gateway laptops alive)

I think LightSpeed is even working on a client for such...

Have a good Friday and enjoy the video from DownUnder.

Thanks for all who shared today, we too have JMC but yet haven't seen the
problem since we just started using period attendance. What I've noticed are
the teachers leaving the CAE open on their desktop, then everything else
takes a performance hit.

Sharepoint Exchange 07- been struggling to run it on the same box (owa
issues) only to find out they weren't made to be that way. Now I'll be
moving Sharepoint 2007 to something new. Used the Sharepoint Learning Kit
(SLK) Microsoft Learning Gateway (LG) for the templates, buggie, but
learning to make it work. I hope to provide a demo user once it is flying.

Again thanks for the dialogue, spent the day home with my daughter watching

can hang out with the kindergarten gang.

another Tech Coord. out there that I could give a call to to talk with
them about the questions. Example question:

A description of how the applicant will encourage the development and
utilization of innovative strategies for the delivery of specialized
or rigorous academic courses and curricula through the use of
technology, including distance learning technologies, particularly for
those area that would not otherwise have access to such courses and

Title II, Part D, Section 2414(b)8)

I did some checking and Title II Part D is E2T2 which SH does not

Were do you folks get raceway for hiding cables running up and down
the walls? It would be cheaper just to have the cables hanging down
the wall, but it looks very tacky.

A few months ago I asked the question at a tech meeting about anyone seeing

I have an invitation from Texas Instruments to attend DLP University in
Plano Tx sometime this year. It is a 1 day free training class. They can
take as many as 30 people in a class. Is anyone interested in attending?

My thoughts are we would drive there and back, so your only cost would be
meals in transit, and split the cost of fuel. This will be a 3 day trip, 1
day down, 1 day training, and 1 day back. There is not a set date yet but
there are options in April, May, and August for sure and I expect other
times would work as well. It sounds like class is on Tuesday so it will be
a Mon-Wed trip.

Please let me know if you are interested and when you could or could not go.

Thanks.

RE: [info-tech] more standardization

2008-01-31 Thread Murray Gafkjen
ViewSonic product (NextVision N4 I think it’s called) is no longer
available, most of our classrooms have one. We’ve standardized a mounted
viewsonic PJ656 (Current number is now PJ658) projector. The janitors clean
the filters every quarter, haven’t had an issue with the lamps. (yet) We
have come across 50 ft. vga cables to give the teachers some flexibility.
(They don’t complain too much about the backpack rack we made for them-reels
out like a garden hose) Seriously though, mounting them on the ceiling is
the way to go, plus it keeps students away from them. Haven’t tried this,
but I’ve been told that video works poorly with wireless setups.

All for now,

We are trying to standardize on a projector to put in classrooms.

· I have gotten opinions from some teachers around our district, but
for the most part, they aren’t picky, they just want the bulbs to last
forever.

· It seems to me that 2 video inputs is a very nice feature, for
switching between computer and doc. cam or other source.

· A VGA video input is nice as well as Svideo (although I’ve never
seen it used) for DVD/VCR or video cameras

· What other features do you folks look at when purchasing
projectors? For the most part, they won’t be mounted. Is there a specific
brand that bulbs are more reasonable on?

· Is anyone using wireless connections to projectors successfully?
We have a few, but the wireless network (internet) connection is given up
when connecting to the wireless proj. Teachers don’t like that.

· As always, price is a factor, but it seems that most of these
manufacturers are making money on the bulbs, warranties and not the
projector itself.

Vicki,

we use the JMC module. Immunizations and other stuff (that is a technical
definition by the way) are input by our School Nurse. She is awesome by the
way and she once diagnosed my eye ulcer.

Eye ulcers are very painful things. If you have never had one, I hope that
you never get one. IT is all better now, however my ears are still ringing
from the concert I attended on Monday night. Velvet Revolver is for now,
the loudest concert I have ever attended.

So how about those Patriots, I truly think that there is no comparison
between them and the 76 Dolphins. I mean come on Larry Csonka weighed in at
what 175 and the Linebackers then were about 215. IT is no comparison to
the athleticism of today's NFL athletes. To go undefeated in the NFL today
is a much greater feat than to have done so in 76.

But I digress. Vicki, we use JMC Health Module, and we like it.
