Re: [info-tech] Backup Systems/UPS Systems

2010-09-28 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
I have been a long fan of APC ups units, but recently been discouraged by a
large number of failures. I was also under the assumption that the SmartUPS
line was of the Online UPS where the power output was always from the
inverter. The SmartUPS unit supply line power and will condition the output
power when needed.

I have been using the Cyberpower Dual Conversion On-Line UPS units on a couple
of new installations. These units play well with generators and can handle a
large swing in input voltage and frequency. The software that is enclosed
allow you to setup one server directly connected via USB as a master server.
The software then can be loaded on any number of other computers that will
communicate with the Master server. This allows any number of servers to
gracefully shutdown before the UPS batteries give out without the complications
of the SNMP add-ons required by other UPS vendors.

Also someone gave me this URL.
http://www.upsforless.com/

It looks like there prices are very good.

What are others using for UPS Systems and where did you buy them from? If you
could be fairly specific of what kind of battery backup system you have that
would be great.

Thanks in advance.

[info-tech] Requesting help with testing a list alternative

2010-09-14 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]

Hello,

I am exploring the possibility of using Google Groups to host the Info-Tech
email list. I have a test group setup to verify how Google groups will
work.

My expectations are that posting to the list can continue through e-mail
messages. All group members will be sent an email when something is posted
to the list. In addition posting and reading messages can also be done
through a web browser.

If this works as anticipated my goal would be to use Groups for the
Info-Tech list, but also add several new lists such as 1-to-1, Lightspeed,
Apple... So individuals can have a little more flexibility on the type of
messages they receive.

If you would like to help me test please visit the group website at:
http://groups.google.com/a/aea8.k12.ia.us/group/grouptest

and or send an email to:
groupt...@gm.aea8.k12.ia.us

The GroupTest group is only setup for testing purposes and will be deleted
once the testing phase has been completed.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [info-tech] Roll your own wireless

2010-09-03 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
When I first started to work with Xirrus their price structure was such that
this conversation would not be happening. Their prices were lower than what it
would be to install any other system yourself. In the last few years it seems
that they have increased their pricing, making other products able to offer
solutions at a lower cost.

Don't forget to take in account the cost/time for pulling cables to each AP,
and make sure that all components are included when you are pricing equipment.
I worked with one school who after the equipment was installed and setup
discovered the management software they had been using was a time limited trial
software, and after the install was complete had to pay for the management
software.

I have had site surveys done from Xirrus, Aruba and Ruckus so I have a pretty
good handle on where the APs go for 1:1 coverage. They all pegged out pretty
much the same locations. Even Xirrus was a good representation of the same
locations just took less devices.

Our local telco is installing the wireless in our high school and central
office building. They were more expensive than Xirrus, but our Board wanted
the local vendor involved. They are guaranteeing the coverage and
functionality of the system, and when it doesn't work, we just make a phone
call. It is their problem.

If you wanted to look at something to do yourself, one thing you may want to
have done is the site survey, to at least tell you what you need and where to
locate your APs. From that point on, you can do the install, purchase the
equipment spec'd and save some money in those regards. There are too many
variables with wireless, and I know from our site surveys here that I was
amazed at the information that it showed. From there, we could have done
everything ourselves.

Just something to think about. Have a great weekend everyone!!!

[info-tech] Print Shop

2010-07-08 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
Does anyone have a copy of The Print Shop Version 23? I have a yearbook
file created with version 21 that I can not open. I am getting an Out of
Memory error. I did get a copy of PrintShop 2.0, but it was not until I
tried to open the file did I find the small print Can not open previous
versions of PrintShop Files I am assuming it is an application issue as
the machine I have a clean install of PS21 has plenty of free HD and RAM
available even when the Out of Memory error is active.

If you have it installed on a machine I would like to see if the file can be
opened on your hardware. The file is 800Mb+ in size so it may be fastest to
bring the file to you.

BTW, the file is the 2010 Yearbook for one of our districts.

[info-tech] Recycling Program.

2010-05-25 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
I have had 13 districts respond with recycling requests. I am looking to
see if there are any other districts that have equipment they want recycled.

The cost will be $2.50 per CRT monitor (Possible additional charge for
monitors larger than 17) plus transportation costs. All other equipment is
recycled at no charge. Transportation costs will be divided between all
districts that share a truck load. I have been told the transportation
should be less than $200, and will be divided by the percentage of equipment
you send for recycling.

If you want to participate please respond with how much equipment you have
to recycle. I need a count on the number of monitors, and also quantity of
each type of equipment. Also include what timeframe will work for pickup of
equipment.

Please try to have this information to me by Friday so I can move forward.

Thanks.

[info-tech] Fw: computers for districts

2010-05-25 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
Are there any districts who would like up to 5 additional 5 yr old Windows
Computers? If so please read the message below, then send me a request if you
are interested and I will forward your info.

Thanks.

---

Hello, all. I am writing with an interesting request. A member of Senator
Harkin's staff contacted me looking for information on districts to which the
Senator may distribute computers as part of a Senate program. We tried
distributing them based on SES, which we thought would be a good approximation
of need, but many of the districts that were approached turned the offer down.
Our next effort is to try to locate districts that our AEAs know of that need
the computers. The Senator can offer up to five computers per district, and he
has 20 to distribute. The computers are five years old, and they are PCs.

I would really appreciate your help in distributing this request to the other
directors in your AEA and/or to your regional coordinators who might have
knowledge of districts in need of additional computers. Please provide my
contact information, along with a deadline of June 1 for getting back to me
with recommendations.

Thank you so much for your help.

they might want to review their methods of 'covering their tech backsides'
as they are swinging in the breeze with nothing to support them.

As IT professionals we have access to a wealth of information. With access
to all email, web usage logs, surveillance systems, and theft tracking
systems we need to make sure that none of the information is used outside of
school policies.

More than likely your district has a policy on Locker Search, but even
though a locker is property of the district, the content of the locker is
private. I have always recommended that all potentially private
information, like a users home folder or email, be handled no different than
the districts Locker Search policy. The Locker Search Policies I have seen
typically state that there has to be just cause to search and have at
least two people present when the search takes place. If I am correct,
there has to be evidence to support the search, because random locker
searches are not allowed.

If the staff in the webcam incident treated the pictures as personal
property, and as such not reported it, we would not be hearing about it in
the news. That is not to say it is/was OK to just Snoop the pictures
captured by the technology. From the district statement I don't find the
activation of the theft locator service problematic. There was a
semi-reasonable cause. As the Theft Location data was personal information
of the student, the data should not have been shared with anyone outside the
theft recovery process. The only justifiable way to use any of the Theft
Location data would have been if the district could have demonstrated
probable cause with evidence not obtained from private data. If they would
have followed their Locker Search policy, if a data search policy did not
exist, I suspect this would not have made the news.

My best advice would be to assume that you have a For Your Eyes Only
security clearance to the personal data on the networks you maintain. Read
and Follow your district Locker Search policy and or Data privacy policy if
it exists. Never share any data found that may be seen as personal data,
unless you have a school policy that backs you up. Never assume that
because it is on the district equipment that it belongs to the district,
even if you have a signed AUP stating that.

This is just my rant, and personal opinions. The line you need to watch is
not the access of the data, but rather what you do with the data or
knowledge of the data. I am not a lawyer and anything stated above should
not be taken as legal advice, at least not without the approval of an
attorney.

Please RSVP if you are attending or not. Weather permitting we will try to

[info-tech] Summer Recycling

I am checking to see how many districts have equipment they need recycled

Re: [info-tech] problem with a website

2010-04-22 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
You may try to get info back by either a Google Search and clicking on Cache
under the specific search result, or possibly the Wayback Machine may have
captured the data. I tried the Wayback Machine on the
'www.myteachingportfolio.com' and only found data to 2005, but if you put the
teachers url, (I am assuming that each teacher had their own url to access
content) there is a possibility data could be retrieved there as well.

Re: [info-tech] CATV

2010-04-20 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
Not quite cable, but here is a commercial solution

http://www.snapstream.com/enterprise/markets/educationK-12.asp
 Worlds Largest DVR.

If you want to try to Roll your own Myth TV is an option that looks like it
would work, but I have not had time to really dig deep into it.
http://www.mythtv.org/

The basics: You can have one or more Servers or Myth Backend with video
capture cards to record shows. Each server can hold one or more capture cards
as well. The server is a Linux box, but there are several distributions that
allow for a simple guided setup. I also believe there is a Myth Frontend
that is a windows application, and would expect there is a Mac frontend as
well.

So it is not really Cable TV. The big drawback is that watching Live
programming you will be limited to the number of unique channels as you have
capture cards. I believe you could have several frontend computers watching
the same channel, but if you only have one capture card front end options would
be to watch a recorded show, or the channel the capture card is set to.

I would be willing to spend some time at a district this summer if you want to
setup a Myth TV solution. Let me know.

Thanks.

Brought the Polycom home, my daughter enjoyed seeing herself on the TV. I was
able to figure out how to run the sound from the laptop through the system.
(nice sound for a laptop-selected VCR in the camera setting), but was not able
to figure out how to control the microphone from the laptop, I'm guessing it
not possible. Scott only mentioned the sound in his posting. I was able to see
the Polycom lobby in Austin, some dark room in Ft. Dodge (Jeremy's closet???),
but beyond that, not much more.

This begs the question, how can this expensive hardware be used to further

If you had Video in on your laptop you can also use the camera. You are also
correct that I am unaware of a way to remote mute or pan/tilt/zoom the camera
in this configuration. This would only be possible if you connected directly
via H.323 to the Polycom.

Lance is correct. nbsp;Depending on the unit the mic plug is a RJ45 or an RJ45
with an offset release clip.

The only way I think it woul work would be to connect the polycom to the

[info-tech] March 18th Tech Meeting in Pocahontas

2010-03-04 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]

Hello everyone.

Just an FYI: The March Info-Tech meeting will be in Pocahontas on the 18th.
There are two districts I know of that are looking for new
Phone/Intercom/Bell systems. I am in the process of inviting several
vendors to come in and talk about their solutions.

I expect a mix of IP and non-IP phones.

The format will be that each vendor will have time to do a presentation, and
have time for QA.

If you have specific vendors you would like to see please update the Agenda
WIKI at

infotech-agendas.pbworks.com
Click on the March 18th link, then edit the page.

Also if you have specific questions you would like to know from each vendor
please add them to the page as well.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

[info-tech] Quick Survey - Due by 3/11

2010-03-04 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]

Hello Everyone,

I have been charged with the task of confirming which districts allow
non-district devices to connect to the Internet through their network. We
are trying to find the most cost effective way to provide our staff members
access to the Internet while out in the districts so they can access agency
resources.

The link below is to a two question Poll.

The first question is if your district allows non-district machines access
to your network.

The second question relates to a possible solution we are looking at. For
the districts that do not allow non-district machines access to their
network would you be willing to allow Prairie Lakes AEA to install a
wireless NAT router on your network. The wireless NAT router would be
configured so our users would not be able to interact with any of your
network, thus minimizing any chances of viruses or other issues. The NAT
device would be for our staff only and configured to allow only our Agency
computers. There would be no cost to the school if we were to move forward
with this solution. The main goal is to give our staff the ability to
access email and the Web based IEP from their agency provided computers.

Please take the time to fill out this simple two question poll. Just follow
this link.

Re: [info-tech] [REN-ISAC] ** Notification - bots ** - SR 235787 - IP 205.221.206.1

2010-02-03 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
Thanks for the insight.

As this came from a PDF, my recommendation from listening to various sources is
to disable JavaScript in any of your Adobe Acrobat products. Open up Adobe
Acrobat (Reader, Pro) from the edit menu choose Preferences Find the
JavaScript link on the left menu, select it and uncheck Enable JavaScript

My understanding is JavaScript is only used in a handful of custom PDF files.
Disabling the feature should have no impact on your ability to view or create
PDF files. There have been several exploits for Adobe Acrobat the last few
months, Adobe short term solution is to Disable JavaScript. By turning it
off your workstations should be more secure.

FYI,

In response to the message below (far below) and to hopefully help someone else
out that may run into this beast.

I have removed large parts of the original message below to protect the
innocent, but the information that pertains to my network is all there :)

Torpig virus: After talking to ICN and REN-ISAC, I thought I should pass this
along.
This virus starts as MebRoot. It infected my machine (yes, I was the one)
through a supposedly clean PDF. (I was researching a scanner, really!) My AV
scanner picked it up, cleaned the file, and I thought all was well. Turns out
I was wrong. shortly following that, my machine rebooted for no apparent
reason. No AV messages, and yes, my AV engine was running. The reboot IS a
symptom, BTW.

After the reboot, it picked up Torpig. I could not get my email to open, and
IE was hanging up on me, but other than that, no errors. I did not think too
much of it since I managed to mangle IE a few weeks before this and never quite
got it working the way I wanted. Chrome and Firefox worked as well as ever.

I ran MalwareBytes, it found 1 file in the windows /temp folder and cleaned it.
Still could not get email, IE was OK now, but noticed now I could not run a
disk cleanup. No errors, just would not finish... odd,

I will skip about 3 hours of screwing around here... I got irritated,
reformatted my machine and started over. Got the email from Scott today and
thought it was odd circumstance.

So everyone is aware, most AV programs will miss it, or not get it completely.

MebRoot does infect the MBR, so even though you think you might get it clean,
if you did not run FIXMBR from the recovery console, you probably are not
clean. Even then it is a good idea to run mbr.exe from gmer.net.

It runs through port 80, making it hard to pick up if. Snort has a new
signature that will detect it, 2008660. If your content filter uses Snort, you
should be able to add it. There are some reports of false positives, but what
can we do. This will work unitl they change it again. The other way is
through NAT transaction (or translation) logging. Most firewalls have this
capability. Then we just wait for the email and track it in the logs at that
point (they give you the port number, see below). I will be turning this on,
just in case it was another machine on my network. (wish I had it on yesterday)

This is a good one, reminds me of the old boot sector types...

Hopefully this will save someone else a headache in the future...

Re: [info-tech] iPad pro/con

2010-02-01 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
Sorry for the delay in my post.

I do think in concept the iPad is a potential Tool that could be used in a
1-to-1. Would it replace a 1-to-1 Laptop project? If you are going to be
having students doing things like video editing I don't see it.

But thinking Outside the box in concept I see that it could be a lower cost
alternative to a laptop project.

Used in conjunction to Moodle, or similar web based solution the Pad could be
used to work in the class electronically. The pad could be used in a Moodle
course to view/review content, take quiz/tests, and participate in Chat/Forums.
This would become more of a pen/paper replacement than a Computer for the
class.

With electronic rights to Textbooks the students would only have to take home 1
device weighing less than 2 pounds instead of a backpack full of textbooks.

But it does not have., Is it that big of a deal, Just don't think of it as
a Computer or Laptop, but a whole new class of device.

As a Palm Owner since the original units were released I saw it as a great
technology. A device to supplement the computer, allowing me to take the
computer data I use the most with me on a small handheld. It was never
designed to Replace the computer, and I think that was the secret to its
success. Although the Palm is on the verge of extinction I still see the
concept as a good one. The Pad type of device I see as a similar technology.
Not a computer replacement, but a supplement. With technology moving to The
Cloud I guess I don't see a big deal with the lack of USB/SD/Firewire or other
jacks, plugs, or holes in the device. I would think with no moving parts,
maintenance should be minimal compared to a laptop. The cost also would/could
allow you to purchase 2-3 Pads to one Laptop.

Of course the bad news is that a district would probably still have to maintain
traditional computers for higher end processing such as Video/Photo editing,
CAD, and such.

I guess what I am saying is don't look at this as a traditional computer, but
as a new different kind of tool, then think about the problems it could solve.

Kurt,

Yes, I actually agree with you that this is probably not a good 1:1 device, at
least not if you expect students to really be able to create and produce. I
feel the same way about netbooks. They have a place, and are useful for
certain things, but if I'm going to base a full-time take-home 1:1 program
around a device, it would be a real fully-functional laptop. I can see some
educational uses of the iPad (or a netbook, or an iPod touch, or.), but I'm
thinking of certain specific applications, not as general purpose machines.

My feeling is that its main benefit is to push technology in a certain
direction that might really develop into something. I mean, remember the Apple
Newton? It didn't amount to much on its own, but it sure pushed technology in
a direction that's become very important today. I'm looking for these 'slate'
devices to morph quickly into the next generation of handheld computing devices.

So I just got done watching the Apple iPAD video. What do you think it
would take to make it a 1-to-1 device for students?

I don't have a touch, so I may be missing this app. What I did not see were
applications for Word Processing, spread sheets, and presentations.
Although with the web access I suspect that can be accomplished with Google
Docs (Not that it is a real great replacement). This may also be a reason
to make sure you get Digital Rights when (ok IF) you purchase new
textbooks. With 10 hour of battery life, solid state drive, I could see
that it has some potential.

Jason and I have been discussing an education device at the time the Kindles
came out. What the iPAD offers hits most of our discussion points.

Although I am still waiting for the iCAR version that would replace my car
radio/GPS.

We are doing our alerts in-house. I did not have much to do with the setup,
but it does seem to work well.

Our site is
http://resources.aea8.k12.ia.us/alerts

What I know is that it is Wordpress with an add-on to Subscribe by SMS. The
benefit is that when alerts are triggered the server only processes the
subscribers to our alerts. The bad news is that if the server goes down, or we
loose Internet connectivity alerts will not go out. Although our server is on
backup generator and linked to two separate ISPs.

If you want more details let me know and I will see if I can get them on the
list.

You don't need to login to access Intermapper. There is a login on the Joomla

For Intermapper access right now just go to the website

[info-tech] Dell Netbook designed for K12

2009-12-15 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
At the AV Coop Vendor Visit last week we saw the new Dell Latitude 2100
netbook that was specifically designed for K12 usage. Please see this url
for details

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-latitude-2100?c=usl=ens=k12

Watch the video on the page, specifically pay attention to the 'Network
Activity Light' placement on the display, and the charging cart.

The keyboard is larger than most netbooks I have tested (HP and Wind) 90%
full size. It was easy to type and I had no problem pressing the correct
keys. The outside case is about 1/4 inch rubber that can be 3D etched with
the districts name/logo and comes in 5 colors.

The cart will charge up to 24 netbooks. There are no cables to connect,
just slide the netbook into the bay to connect to charger and data. All
netbooks in the cart are Wake on Lan supported so updates can be applied to
all netbooks while they are docked in the cart. My understanding is that
Dell also created or bundled classroom management software with these
netbooks that will aid both teachers and techs in a 1-to-1 deployment.

Cost is between $400-$600 depending on options such as Touch Screen, Web
Cam, Antibacterial keyboard, HD, etc.

Yes I can't imagine not using it now. I originally had it setup for personal

work I now only ring my cell phone. The Voice to SMS lets me keep tabs on
calls when I am at a meeting and can not answer my phone.

When I signed up there were no Iowa phone numbers, so my number is Kansas City

[info-tech] Remote Backup Server Status

2009-10-20 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
I am having some issues currently with our Remote Backup Server. Tonight
when I applied the security updates, just before the server rebooted it
noted a problem with a file and needed to run Scandisk. After Scandisk
completed and found errors the server was not able to boot successfully. It
looks to be a corruption of some of the system files, and I am tracking down
the issues. The actual backup files and application are present and I have
no indication of data loss at this time.

It is possible that it may take a day or so to bring the machine back up,
depending on how I have to recover from the problem. I will send out a
notification when the service is back up and running.

Thanks.

Re: [info-tech] steadystate

2009-10-16 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
I am not sure that group policies can do the same thing as SteadyState. There
are features in SteadyState that I am sure are accessible through Group
Policies, but the actual Hard Drive Locking I believe requires extra software
such as SteadyState.

I have also seen a couple of references to cost. I show SteadyState is Free
with a valid XP or Vista OS license. So the only cost would be time to
administer.

I also agree, if there was a enterprise console this tool would be much more
valuable.

I am thinking that is why Microsoft advised not to use it on a large number of

I have used it in one of our computer labs. It worked as advertised, but I
didn't like the fact that there was no Management Console. Each machine had to
be unfrozen manually to apply updates, patches, etc. Maybe they have improved
it since this was a couple of years ago. If it had a Management Console to
unfreeze all computers in one shot, then it would definitely be worth the
money!! I guess it depends on how often you want to patch and update your
computers. It is a great way to make them oblivious to any changes made during
a day. One reboot and all is well again.

Re: Potential Increase for E-Rate Funding

We wanted to let all of you know that Senator John Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), the
chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee is
proposing that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) raise the 2.25
billion dollar cap on E-Rate.

An increase in E-Rate funding would be a huge help to LEAs and ESAs in these
tough economic times as they struggle to meet the technology needs of today's
students..

At this time Senator Rockefeller is seeking the change through the regulatory
side of the FCC rather than through Congress. (see below)

Please let your Congressional delegation know you support this effort and if
you have contacts at the FCC that you let them know how important raising the
cap is to your LEA and ESA. If you do not have contacts at the FCC you can

Rockefeller Seeks FCC Rule Change To Increase E-Rate Program Funding

By Cheryl Bolen

10/13/09

LINK

Sen. John Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), the chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science,
and Transportation Committee, Oct. 9 sent a letter to the Federal
Communications Commission seeking more funds to connect schools and libraries
to the internet.

Specifically, Rockefeller asked FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski to
expeditiously adjust the commission's rules to address the inflationary
decreases in funding available for the program.

Rockefeller was an original sponsor of the amendment to the 1996
Telecommunications Act that first established the schools and libraries program
as part of the universal service fund. The program is commonly known as the
E-Rate program.

The E-Rate program has been the singularly most effective and powerful of all
of the [FCC's] universal service programs at supporting the expansion of
broadband service, Rockefeller wrote in his letter.

However, when the commission first implemented its rules governing the E-Rate
program, it capped the funds available annually at $2.25 billion, Rockefeller
said.

I am concerned that more than a decade later the strength of this program has
been reduced by the failure of the agency to adjust its rules to accommodate
the impact of inflation, the letter stated. Taking into consideration growth
in the consumer price index, the cap that was put in place in July 1997 has an
equivalent value in August 2009 of $1.68 billion, he stated.

This situation has serious consequences, Rockefeller wrote. While each year
students' need for broadband educational opportunities increases, the real
dollar value of the E-Rate program decreases, he stated.

It also has a detrimental effect on those who use public libraries for internet
access, including an increasing number of low-income, elderly, and unemployed
citizens, the letter stated.

Rockefeller said he knew that the commission understood the great importance of
broadband in this country. As a result, I ask that you expeditiously adjust
commission rules to address the toll that inflation has taken on this important
program, he wrote.

The schools and libraries program of the universal service fund is administered
by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) under the direction of
the FCC. It provides discounts that allow most schools and libraries in the
United States to obtain affordable telecommunications and internet access.

According to USAC, the schools and libraries program disbursed an estimated
$1.8 billion in funding year 2008.

Re: [info-tech] called up to the MAJORS

2009-10-05 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
I am moving to recommending something other than APC for UPS units. The APC
units are Standby (equipment runs on line power and quickly switches to
inverter when needed) UPS. Not that I have had any real issues with them I
like the Idea of On-Line UPS better where the UPS inverter is always
supplying power to the equipment. They are also a little happier when
connected to a back-up generator than Standby UPS units. CyberPower Online
Double Conversion would be my recommendation.

http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems/ups-selector.html

The software included allows for a single machine to connect via USB, then it
will chain to any number of servers via software. So now if you have several
servers on a single UPS all the servers can shut down gracefully in the event
of a UPS low battery.

I have a couple installed and have been very happy with them.

Re: [info-tech] Terminal Services Question

2009-09-23 Thread Scott Fosseen
1) Reset all the student passwords
2) Set the user options to Reset Password at next Login
(Don't use simple passwords such as student ID for permanent password, OK
for password reset, but have students change password. Also setup password
restrictions so they have a stronger password that would be difficult to
guess)
3) Tell the students not to share their passwords.

I have always recommended to districts to tell all users that they will be
held responsible for any activities done with their user account. If they
share their password with other people they run the risk of getting in
trouble for the actions of someone else. Use the analogy: Would you give
anyone access to your savings/checking account?

Subject: [info-tech] projector inputs

Good morning! I have a question regarding some older projectors we have,
and I would Google it if I knew what I was talking about, but alas . . .

I have some older projectors with only 1 input spot. I would like to be
able to connect both the computer and the document camera to the
projector at the same time. Is there anything out there/does anybody use
something that would be an adapter or splitter to allow this to happen?
I would hate to buy new ones if I don't have to and could use the
resources elsewhere . . . but I also wonder how that could work if
people will need to be selecting different input sources.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: [info-tech] projector inputs

2009-09-01 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
I don't recommend the passive VGA splitter below. The few times I used it
the results were poor. Either the video was really dim with two monitors
connected, or one monitor just did not work. There are a few video cards
with enough output power to make it work, but most can not deal with the
current draw of two monitors.

[info-tech] Mail Server Update

2009-08-26 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
Mail should be working correctly again. It just finished processing 26,000
email messages.

If you want the technical details:

The default for the Declude spam processor is to use up to 15 threads to
process incoming email messages. This was to ensure that lower end servers
would not crash with using too many resources. Per recommendations of
Declude this setting has been upgraded to 250 threads, or allowing the
server to process 250 messages at a time. With this setting the mail server
was able to process 26,000 emails in less than 45 Minutes.

I am not sure exactly what started the processing latency, it could be the
service window on Monday, or it could just be that the mail load increased
on the server with the start of school. Regardless of what was the initial
cause, I am confident this issue has been rectified.

I think I found the answer to the problem working off-line with Kurt. The
original version of Usertool was written in a 16 bit DOS environment. In
2006 I updated the program to work within the Windows with a Windows GUI.
If anyone is still using a version of usertool that requires you to create a

Re: [info-tech] User tool...

2009-08-06 Thread Scott Fosseen
I have not had time to see if there is an easy fix. My assumption is that
the old Lan Manager functions have been disabled in 2k8. Usertool does not
interact with Active Directory. You may want to research to see if Lan
Manager compatibility can be enabled and see if that helps.

When I moved I misplaced my programming IDE application and have now
replaced my original development system. Currently I don't have a way to
update Usertool without a $1000 investment.

Another thing I can probably do is see if I can modify an older copy of
UserTool that created batch files. Originally all I did was write batch
files that used the net user command. It may be pretty simple to update the
old version to use the DSMOD command. It is from the old dos version of
Turbo Pascal which I should be able to run without installing. (There are
some things I REALLY like about running DOS.

Are you sure you have the right equipment? From a quick scan these look like
they would connect to an ISP who has the other end of the circuit, and not
necessarily connect to each other. I could be wrong on this, but it does not
look like the other DSL equipment I have seen. The Point to Point DSL
equipment I have worked with has had two different components.

It also looks like your max speed will be a little low as well with these
devices.

At 1000' I would think wireless would be an option if you can get line of site
between buildings. The ideal situation would be to use Fiber to connect the
buildings for the fastest possible connection.

Is your business manager trying to edit the global directory or just send an
email from it?

SmarterMail will auto-complete from all visible address books, so if you
start typing a name in the To box there should be a drop-down with names
that meet the spelling. You can also click on the To, CC', or 'BCC'
links to open your address book. At the bottom of that pop-up there will be
a drop-down to select other address books. There you can check the user or
users you want to send messages to.

A difficult option to find, but an important one IMHO is an external microphone
jack. Almost all consumer recorders have went away from this feature. If you
are trying to record in a noisy area though an external microphone is a must.

I am in a meeting now learning the latest on the E2T2 and ARRA funds.

Here is what to expect

ARRA funds will be 100% competitive grants. Grants will be filled
on-line.
This is still in limbo, but the website is
https://iowagrants.gov

There will also be new E2T2 Grant application as well, but I don't see
that
individual districts will want to go through the hoops to file on their
own.
The Iowa DE current view is to keep the current E2T2 Consortia intact.

E2T2 Funds may still be through the existing Consortia. (Yes I expect
new
schools will be allowed in, but it is too new to know how it will work
now)

Regardless there is a QUARTERLY reporting requirements, and complete
transparency in funds usage. If part of a consortia the reporting will
be
done by the consortia.

IMHO: I don't expect that it will be money that each district can spend
as
they want. The Iowa DE does not have the resources to review 360
reports
four times a year.

The next big question is what is next year E2T2 consortia going to look
like. I can speculate it will continue with reading, but could
transition
to math. The funds will purchase at least 40% Professional Development,
and
some is going to purchase technology for the districts. As the
consortia
the purchases will be determined and applied to all participating
districts.
It could be Hardware, On-Line resource subscription, and/or software.
This
is all VERY new information so no details have been discussed. Once se
know
more info we will send it out.

[info-tech] My Contact Update

2009-05-14 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]

Howdy All,

I have made a change on how our phone system routes calls to me. You can
continue to call the same number(s) you always have used. If I don't answer
my office phone your call will be routed to my cell phone via Google
Voice. The primary benefit to me is that when you leave a message I will
get a TXT message on my cell phone with a transcription of the message.
This way when I am in a meeting and can not answer my phone I can read the
voicemail to determine the priority of the call-back.

What this means to you: When you call me at (515) 574-5500 ext 91, OR (800)
669-2325 ext 91 you will get a short recorded greeting. If I am not in my
office there will be about 10 seconds of silence as our phone system
transfers you to my cell phone via Google Talk. Don't Hang Up, this is
normal. I will then be able to answer your call, or you will go to voice
mail.

Additional Info:
Jason's extension is 92
Internet Response Line is 93
The Internet Response line goes to a voicemail system. I will update the
outgoing message on any known outages as soon as I can get to the line. If
you are having ICN Internet problems please use the extension 93 so I can
focus on correcting any issues.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Re: [info-tech] projectors

2009-05-13 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
I always recommend purchasing from the AV Coop. Twice a year we Shoot-Out
over 50 projectors so each projector has been looked at before it is put on the
Coop catalog.

IMHO:
Currently DLP projectors have a significant lifetime savings vs LCD projectors
as DLP has no filters to clean. LCD projectors recommend filter cleaning
between 100-500 hours of use. This last shoot-out we are seeing a trend that
LCD projectors are going to a one filter cleaning between bulb changes, and I
expect that in the next year or two LCD projectors will only require a filter
clean/change at the time of bulb replacement.

If you look at projectors side by side there is a visual difference between LCD
and DLP. If you looked at each one separately I don't think I would be able to
tell the difference. In previous years DLP a solid yellow block looked brown,
but a year ago most DLP projectors moved to True Color that corrected that
issue.

If price was not an issue my recommendation for the last year is the Hitachi
Ultra Close Focus projector. The projector is mounted 1-2 feet from the
screen. The big benefit is that the teacher does not have to look into the
projector while working at the screen.

[info-tech] Need to borrow a Mac

2009-05-08 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
Would someone out there have a Mac I can borrow for a week or so. I need to
troubleshoot a problem with the AV Coop website. There seems to be a
problem with OS 10.5.x and Safari 3.? The Mac's I have access to only have
10.4 installed.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [info-tech]Looking for some more help

2009-05-06 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
Mitch,

If you want something you don't have to worry about I would recommend Google
Apps for Education. Google maintains the server infrastructure so you don't
have to worry about file corruption, hackers, or even any complex setup. With
the Google Docs portion of Apps teachers will be able to upload, share, and
edit traditional office files. The Google Sites portion will give each user
access to their own website tool. Plus you can control access to Google Chat,
Google Video, and several other components.

There is no Moodle type of offering, but I don't believe you will get that
with Sharepoint either. Google Apps for education much to my disappointment
does not have any true education applications (per March Tech Coordinators
Google Presentation) but licenses are Free to Schools (They do verify all
school accounts). Also there is an option to remove all the adds at no charge
as well.

If you do decide to host something yourself, speaking from experience, you will
want a full understanding of the web server and all components for the site.
Hackers are continually crawling the Internet looking for any sites with holes
they can exploit. My most recent issue is that most of the Moodle sites were
hacked with imbedded URL links to 100's of sites to boost Google rankings. I
have also had sites where I missed locking down a specific folder and the
hackers were able to imbed Trojans on several sites.

The best advice is know the software, keep it patched, verify your file
security settings and keep backup copies of your sites so that when your site
gets hacked you will not loose everything.

Well I downloaded the trail last night so I will spend today working with it.
If I do like it and can get teachers to use it would it be worth the purchase
you think? Also how does that work with licensing? How would I purchase them.

Mitch,

I would recommend you take a look at Atomic Learning. It is free to access for
all Iowa schools and could be a great resource in several areas you have
requested help in.

It is a great resource.

Mitch,

Click on the Column heading (Like 'D') and that should highlight the entire
column. Then do the same thing you did with the cell to change the formatting
of the whole column.

[info-tech] May Info-Tech Meeting

2009-05-06 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
I have the agenda published for the May Info-Tech meeting in Fort Dodge on
the 14th. There is a change in the agenda and the Joomla training day will
be scheduled for another day.

To see the Agenda please visit

www.aea8.k12.ia.us/techmeetings

---
The Joomla Class in April ended up taking 6 hours so it will be best to
schedule a date when the whole day is available for the class. Will May
27th work for the people who still want to take the Joomla Class?
