Hi, all! We are updating some printers . . . and I now have HP LaserJets 4000

these, and toner, email me directly.

RE: [info-tech] Provisioning wireless

2010-11-17 Thread Pearson, Jeremy
We have three networks on our official wireless system:

Internal Secure Network - For District equipment only, using WPA
Public Unsecured Network - Filtered currently at our student
level using OpenDNS, completely wide open
Training Network - Filtered for porn only using OpenDNS, using
a different WPA key

How are other tech coordinator's provisioning their wireless? For example just
a district radius SSID and a guest SSID or are you providing additional
specialized SSIDs with more refined access. Just seeking the best course.

I have a question about the google apps domain. I have some students

days to reenter him.

2010-11-15 Thread Jackie Fonley
I purchased the case with them. Currently we don't have enough for a lab set
up scenario (15 as of today -- YEAH!) . . . so they will just be housed in
classrooms and stored by the teachers. I think when we purchased the syncing
stations (suitcase type) there was a more expensive option of a cart. (with the
syncing ability)

re: [info-tech] Skype

2010-11-12 Thread Tim Limbert
We use Skype quite a bit here, and have seen no major problems (technical
ones, anyway). We've never really had any trouble with Skype traffic
getting through, and I'm not sure why, really, because I don't feel like
I've done anything special to make it work. Our firewall setup is simple,
and our content filters are fairly open.

Quick question:

Who uses Skype, and do you have any issues getting the traffic past your
content filter? Our content filter stops it as P2P traffic (which it
really is...). I could get past that if I could use a specific port, but
Skype is all over the place on ports, and you can only set a static inbound
port, not outbound. I am working with the vendor (Deep Nines), but I am
curious what others are doing.

Google Talk anyone?

We have several people using Skype, and have really had no issues, other than a
dropped call here and there and some bad video once in a while. In fact, we
are teaching a class over it to 5 kids somewhere on the east side of the state.
No real big problems. Definitely a program that we could use more of!!!
We are using Lightspeed for content filtering.
Have a great, beautiful weekend!!!

I will expose my naïvety in regard to printers . . . if I am weeding out HP
4000 and 4100 printers -- can they be converted to be wireless? We are
replacing our printers, but I would like to be able to put some on carts with
laptops.

2010-11-09 Thread Timothy A. Limbert
We have some 16 GB and some 32 GB. The 16 holds tons of apps, would only need
more space if you're going to load it up with video.

I am getting the 16GB models iPads (which were the $499 model), which for
purposes now will suffice memory wise. This next shipment of Touches we are
getting will be the 64 GB model, as they will not only be an additional Touch

Right now we have the 16gb iPads paid $499 for them, and 32 GB iPods, not sure
what I paid each for them as it was a bundle of 20 and a case for around $6500

Actually I was not meaning to be political with my comment although it
may have sounded that way. Just more or less relieved that I don't have
a ton of iPods to manage at this point.

I have gone through the set up process with staff. Each elementary
grade level has a set of iPod Touches to use in the classroom, and a
grade level iTunes account. Each elementary building also has one of
the syncing cases to use to sync apps to their iPod Touches. I also
have purchased iTunes gift cards for each grade level so they can
purchase apps. With the home sharing feature in iTunes they can
purchase apps and share them with one another across grade levels. (I
also receive the receipt each time they purchase something -- a must)
Basically, each grade level is responsible for managing their classroom
set of iPod Touches. Currently we have around 70 Touches with another
20 + some iPads on the way.

Below are the apps I have purchased/downloaded to use for demos with
staff. Some of my favorites as well as staff favorites are the ABA
apps, Alien Math, Learn Sight Words (dolche word list practice-- it's
awesome), Spelldown, iWriteWords, US States. Just out of coolness the
Star Walk one is neat for the iPad; my daughter made me download it
after watching the commercial several times. :-) I liked the iScore
Baseball app for keeping softball stats this summer -- coolness for me.

Yes what is the CASPER add-on. Thank god they haven't taken a real
interest in iPods in my district yet but I am sure it is coming.

[info-tech] Hosted Web Servers

2010-11-08 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
The web server had a failed drive in the Array. When replacing the failed
drive a 2nd drive failed in the array causing loss of service. I am going
to run diagnostics on the 2nd failed drive in an attempt to bring the server
back up in it's latest condition. If this does not work I will I will
restore the server from the last backup. I do anticipate web access will be
unavailable for the day.

[info-tech] Webster City Nov. 4th Event

2010-11-02 Thread Murphy, Mark
This is a reminder that Webster City will be hosting a Windows Deployment
Service workshop on Nov. 4th starting at 9:00am. In the morning we will walk
you through installing WDS on your server, tweaking settings on the server and
network, preparing your master image, and actual client deployment. Plus we
will share the tips and tricks we learned while we used WDS this summer.
Additional topics for the day will include KMS licensing, VMware, SAN
infrastructure, and any other interesting side topics that develop.

The workshop will be held at the Webster City High School ICN room. The address
is 1001 Lynx Ave. Construction on the new high school gym is under way so
parking is slightly inconvenient. Parking is available in the main student lot,
on the west side, between the building and the ball fields. Additional parking
is also available in the teacher lot, on the east side, between the building
and the tennis courts. There is a temporary gravel parking lot on the south end
of the building that connects both lots.

The workshop is open to anybody who is interested. So we have an idea of the
number of people coming please RSVP to
mark_mur...@webster-city.k12.ia.us
sometime before 9:00am Nov. 4th. Thank you to all that have already sent in
your RSVP.

We look forward to seeing many of you on Thursday.

[info-tech] Fw: [Iowalib] Printers for Sale and other government surplus

2010-11-01 Thread Harriet Adams

Another source for goods that you might wish to investigate...Harriet

From: "Marie Harms"
Sent: Wednesday, October 27, 2010 9:57 AM
To:
Subject: [Iowalib] Printers for Sale and other government surplus

The State of Iowa has signed up with a nationwide online auction service,
GovDeals.com, to sell state surplus equipment and supplies. The State
Library of Iowa has currently listed several printers, scanners and other
library related items on the website. The website runs similar to EBay and
other online auctions and requires a PayPal account or major credit card
for winning bid payments.

Libraries can pick up some good equipment very cheap! For example, we have
listed several HP LaserJet 1300 printers at the starting bid price of
$15.00! To view these printers and other items for sale, from the
GovDeals.com website home page, select "Search by Zip" in the upper left
section, then enter your zip code on the next page. This will narrow the
search down to within 100 miles of your location. Our printers are
listed under Computers, Parts and Supplies.
This is a national website and most items currently for sale are located
out of state. As more State of Iowa agencies begin using the site, more
items will be locally located. Register today as a bidder with the
following directions:

1.Go to http://www.govdeals.com
2.Select "New Members Register Free"
3.Register as a bidder
4.Registrants are manually verified which may take one to two business
days. You may expedite your registration by calling the GovDeals.com Help

Only 9% of the U.S. population is bilingual, compared with 65% of the world's
population (U.S. Census). The growth of the 21st century economy demands Iowa's
students compete with peers from across the globe. How can our students compete
if they can't communicate?

Due to the immense popularity of the fall IEC purchase, the IEC has negotiated
an extension of the special rate for Rosetta Stone® Classroom licenses. This
special price extension is available until December 15, 2010. Rosetta Stone
Classroom is an approved software product for Microsoft Settlement Funds and
available through the Software Voucher opportunity.

Rosetta Stone® Classroom enables Iowa schools to bring second language skills
to every student in the school with existing teacher headcount.

A Rosetta Stone expert will attend five Area Education Agency meetings
scheduled November 15th - 19th, from 1:00 pm - 4:00pm. The format for these
events will be presentation, demonstration, Q&A starting at 1:00pm and 2:30pm.
We recommend you take advantage of this opportunity or schedule a one-on-one
meeting that week to discuss:

. Best practices in ESL initiatives
. Expanding world language programs with existing headcount
. Professional development
. Creating scalable solutions to suit diverse student populations
. Parent and community outreach
. Choosing the right licensing platform

To Register for Iowa Tour:

Please RSVP to Franklin Moomaw to confirm your seat at one of the events or
schedule a personalized consultation.

Did you know that Promethean interactive whiteboard users can get a free
teacher / student version of Activinspire software?

Go to the Promethean Planet website, www.prometheanplanet.com. Register for a
user name and password. Once you are registered you can go to the Support tab
and under that tab click on ActivInspire. Once it opens you will have the
option to download the personal version of Activinspire. Let me know how it
goes or if you need further assistance.

Jeremy,

We actually have 3 of the Bretford carts with the cable nightmares and I'm
wishing to find a better solution for the 125 laptops that will be coming
my way soon. I'm convinced after lots of searching that I'm just going to
have to design my own cart. I have yet to see a cart for 14"+ laptops that
you can easily take out cords if needed to plug in and yet still have a
place to tuck them away for charging that's not crammed in on top of the
laptops.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Of course, the AV Co-op catalog has several versions of the Bretford and

[info-tech] Skills Iowa not a lightspeed problem

2010-10-22 Thread Murray Gafkjen
While working with a teacher, I saw it came back to the way IE 8 handles
pop-ups. Even though we had them turned off for the site, after we typed in the
code for taking OCT assessment, it would return to the same page. On one
machine we had a message about pressing the control key, so after typing the
code id, pressing the Control key (keeping it down while the next page came),
it allowed the testing to start. During this we also added the site to the
"trusted websites", I don't know if this was needed. We did the same on another
machine, with an earlier version of IE8, it worked as well, but we did not get
the message about using the control key, even though it needed the control key
to be pressed.

All for now,

Have a great weekend.

Spirit Lake has had much trouble with Skills Iowa as well. Their tech support
seems to ALWAYS say it is on our end. Hearing that other districts are having
the same issue makes me wonder if that is indeed the case.

Last year at Okoboji we had the same issues and they always said it must be
something with our system. I come to Spirit Lake this year and it is more of
the same. Hmm...

I had one student not able to take the OCT. reading test. Blockers were
off-it is still a mystery. Ugh. We have had numerous issues. One we have
seen in the classroom is the student answers change. They put in one
answer, and it changes their answer to a wrong answer. I was skeptical, but
the math teacher also noticed this. We had students write down their
answers on paper as well as answer on computer to be sure. I have let
Skills IA know this.

Keith would know more about the issues in elem. level...

First question: I set their passwords, lock them out of changing them, and
keep them on file. This way, I'm not concerned with bad passwords, and it
allows me to easily log in as them, and check out their account if I need
to. I also make sure that parents have a copy of the username and
password.

Second question: We do reference email in the student agreement(s).
School email is for school-related communication only, no harassment,
threats or bullying, and no using the school address to sign up for
personal websites/services.

Subject: [info-tech] Quick Survey - Student Accounts

I would sure appreciate any responses to the following questions
regarding student passwords when you get a chance

1. What is your procedure when a student forgets their logon
password? Who handles this request?
If I don't have the password, I reset one on the server.

2. Do you maintain a list of student passwords, and if so, who do
you share that list with?
I try to keep a list of password in case they forget, or if I have to go
in under their account.

3. How often do you change student passwords?
Only change them when they come to the HS or if they forget.

I am just curious what other districts are doing regarding this problem.
It's not a big deal at this point in the game, but it seems to be an
issue during the first few weeks of school and of course that is when we
are bombarded by a million other things...

I handle the password resets. If a student forgets they come see me in my
office. Or leave me a note.

Just with a list of passwords is all.

3. How often do you change student passwords?

I keep a list (spreadsheet) of all user credentials. I keep a hard copy filed
in the office. If someone forgets their password, they come to me, and I can
print them off a copy of the login sheet they were given at the beginning of
the year. I will generally change their password at this point, just in case.
We change all staff and student passwords at the beginning of the school year
(and any time we're concerned that it may have become compromised).

One way to block https sites without having to decrypt/reencrypt the
traffic (which usually causes issues) is to use OpenDNS as your external

internal service. They also have some nice reporting features for what
it's getting requests for from your site. Only way around it is a proxy

"block non-http traffic to blocked ip addresses"

BUT they will still find a few to proxy throughand these checked can and
