Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 10?

2022-01-24 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
There will be links to the images. As long as you don’t move your images
that are linked to Legacy, RootsMagic will find them, once you import your
DEDCOM into RootsMagic. This is assuming you are installing RootsMagic on
the same computer hard drive where your Legacy resides.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 10?

2022-01-24 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
If RootsMagic is installed on the same computer and your images linked in
Legacy remain where they are, there will be links included in your GEDCOM
file used to move your Legacy data. Once imported into RootsMagic, this
program will find the images, based on the links. If you then, at some
point, move or rename these linked images, you will encounter the same
situation as you would in Legacy. RootsMagic, like Legacy, only links to
the images.

Re: [LegacyUG] Pictures Not Showing in Reports

Are you using the Descendant Report or the Descendant Book Report? If the
Descendant Report, I think you need to turn off compacting information on
one line. Including photos in this report requires individual information
to use four lines. I don’t remember the exact wording but you will see what
I’m referencing when you look at the various options.

Please provide a bit more information as to your Legacy version and build.

Re: [LegacyUG] Resizing Windows

Martha, I don't know if this is the file(s) you're asking about but the
following info is from a note I saved from an earlier discussion. I've never
experienced this resize problem so unable to verify this information. Maybe
you will recognize and know if it is the file you're asking about. Good
luck Mary

Legacy Screen Size reset:

Screen can be difficult to resize sometimes and why that is, is unknown.

If windows are opening in a different place, you probably need to delete
Legacy2.usr and perhaps some of the other Legacy#.usr to reset to defaults.
You'll find them in ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\usr\ folder

Re: [LegacyUG] Finding last visited families

2017-09-18 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Jennifer, I think you are referencing the History Icons you can place on the
shortcuts toolbar found under the 'My Toolbar' tab.

If so, and if your 'My Toolbar' menu bar is lacking these icons, in Legacy 9
you can add them by clicking on the little tiny arrow in the far right lower
corner of the shortcuts toolbar. This will bring up the window displaying
all of the available function Icons you can add to your 'My Toolbar'. I
think the BACK Icon might be present as the default under the 'My Toolbar'
tab.

There are three icons you can use for history; BACK FORWARD and the
HISTORY icon which will open a small window showing a long list of the last
visited families. In this HISTORY window, you can choose to move quickly to
a recently visited family.

If I've misunderstood your question, please let us know and we will try
again.

In version 7.5 there was a down arrow somewhere on the toolbar I could click
on and it brought up the last visited individuals or families. I can't see
it in version 9. Was it removed?

Re[2]: [LegacyUG] Descendant Narrative Wording Option

2015-10-02 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Stan,

I’ve just now tried this by setting up a test family with a single mother named
‘Mom delete’ and a child named ‘daughter delete’ and I have no problem with
creating a report with the correct wording.

I realize you are not getting this same result so we just have to figure out
why.

To test in Legacy 8, I added a mother (named: Mom delete) then right clicked on
her and added a daughter (named: daughter delete). Then I went to the marriage
information screen, clicked on ‘this couple did not marry’, then on the
‘wording options screen’, I used Male and Female for the labels and for the
override, used ‘had a relationship with someone’. At the very bottom, under
‘Other word substitutes for this marriage: I use Spouse: SpouseMarriage:
Partnership

Back to the family view, I notice there is nothing showing in the Male side …
where a name would be inserted, it simply indicates ‘click to add Person’. If I
right click on Mom and click on unlink, I am offered the opportunity to unlink
from husband, but nothing is showing for him on the family view.

While in the family view, I highlight the Female Mom delete and click create
Descendant Narrative report.

It Reads:

Descendants of Mom delete

1. Mom delete.

  Mom had a child.

  Her known child was:
 F i. daughter delete.

It Reads:

Am I understanding you to say that an attached image file will print in a
report so that it can actually be read, not just print as a tiny image? If
attached to a source, it will upload and be readable on a Legacy generated web
site, if media is selected to be included on the web site? Have I understood

What if the image contains 8 pages of records, how does one read all eight

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] unsupported file format

A PDF is NOT an image. It is a proprietary file format from Adobe for a
“container” that will contain encrypted text, images, spreadsheet data, and
other types of data. Even if the PDF contains multiple images or nothing more
than a single image, no one can see those images except through the use of a
PDF reader program (free from Adobe or other 3rd party suppliers).

As mentioned in some other posts, there are multiple ways of converting a PDF
to that you can end up with standalone text files or standalone images files.

If you use a PDF as a source media in Legacy, then the only thing that will
show in any report you create or web pages you create is a reference to that
certain PDF file which probably sits on your computer at home.

If you use a “real image” file such as a JPEG, GIF, or TIFF image, then those
images can be included with a report created by Legacy and can be seen by
anyone viewing the report (either via an emailed report or a printed report),
or they can be seen on web pages created by Legacy (provided the user uploads
the web pages and the images files to a web server.)

So if you plan on doing nothing other than keeping your Legacy family data
right at home on a computer, then you or anyone you invite over to your house
can easily view any PDF documents you may have attached to your sources. But if
you have a friend that lives far away and you want to mail him/her a Legacy
printed report about your ancestors, such a report can include the “real
images” printed right in the report if you so choose but the PDF document will
not be included as part of the report. Let’s say your friend is an elderly
person that does not have a computer. He would be able to see all the “real
images” printed on the report but would never be able to view the PDF file even
if that PDF file had nothing in it other than one single image (such as the
Death Certificate mentioned in your original post).

Quite frankly, I personally do not see why Legacy even bothers with support of
PDF files. I suppose a few years ago lots of users demanded it as it the thing
to do but now with so many free choices of PDF converters which can create text
files or “real images”, I should think it would be better if they converted any
PDF document they come across and use only the real text or the real image. In
my opinion, the allowed use of PDFs in Legacy is only so they can claim
bragging rights that it supports PDF. But to me it’s sort of like Legacy also
claiming they support these image file formats also: XPM-X, RAST, and TARGA
(which they actually still continue to support !). But when was the last time
you ever heard of anyone using any of those formats? I can remember using TARGA
when I did digital image restoration on a Targa Machine but it was so long ago,
I think it was when DOS was still king.

Brian, I am rereading this email string and am not sure of your preference when
you say (in the 2nd message in the string from the top) “I somewhat support
this question about using PDFs when the real image might be better/easier …” I
take this to mean that you are advocating the jpeg over the pdf. What are the
practical consequences of using the one over the other? I did not really get a
clear sense of that from this discussion. Perhaps I am missing something.
Isn’t any Media image something that’s just useful for viewing in the actual
Legacy software? If you concert the Legacy file to a gedcom or you upload
Legacy pages to the web, it doesn’t take the Media files with it, right? So
does it make a difference if you upload a jpeg or a pdf?

I’m assuming that you’ve read the other replies about the use of JPEGS vs.

representation of the image. Your PDF document (notice the keyword “document”)
may contain text, images, or other digital objects. A PDF cannot be viewed

Barton, I don’t know which version of windows you use but for windows 7, from
your desktop you could click on Start in the lower left hand corner, then in
the search box (where it says search programs and files), type in the name of
your Legacy file with the extension, then click on the little search icon and
let windows search for other copies of this file. Perhaps you inadvertently
saved it to a different location. It’s worth the few seconds it will take to
let windows look for another copy, just to be sure you haven’t lost all of your

That's probably good advice, Cathy (learning how to restore backups as soon as
you purchase software), but let's say you don't need to use that information
until a year down the road, or longer. It would be nice if Legacy's Help
feature on how to perform this very important operation worked. The link is
broken to James Terry's article. Fortunately, I was able to find it on the web.

I only have one uniquely named version of my Legacy database. I can't imagine
how this data was lost -- that involving only the descendants of this one
particular ancestor. But it makes me very nervous.

RE: [LegacyUG] How to Delete a Master Event Definition

2015-07-31 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
While this doesn’t help Brian, another suggestion is to import a GEDCOM into a
new Legacy file first and go through and clean it up to your standards before
importing into your primary file.

Also, if the deed is already done and you find yourself with an unwanted EVENT,
you can set the EVENT to PRIVATE while working on removing it, so that it does
not print in your reports.

Mary

---
So as it stands right now, Legacy has no means of deleting a Master Event
Definition (that is in use) in just a few mouse clicks. That tells me one has
to be very careful about importing any GEDCOM files from other programs which
may have events names that you don’t want to appear as an event name.

You didn’t say what General Release Legacy build you are using and I don’t know

RE: [LegacyUG] Descendant reports

2015-04-16 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Both are narrative reports. I guess it is just the way Legacy decided to name
and differentiate between these two reports.

Personally, I would describe the Descendant Book Report as what some
genealogists refer to as a register report.

The Descendant Narrative Report shows each child of the focus couple in an
indented descending group, (based on the number of generations you select) then
moves on to the next child and displays all of their descendants, then on to
the next child, etc.

Select a focus person and create each of these reports with three generations.
This will display the difference for you.

RE: [LegacyUG] Window Size

2015-03-09 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Brian,

Manually resized the Legacy window to about ½ of the monitor screen. My window
size remains the same size, following a close and reopen.

The only place I can find where a setting might dictate the Legacy screen size
was where you can set Legacy to display two open files side by side, not
something that would likely apply to your situation.

Windows 7 pro
Legacy beta build 8.0.0.473

From: Brian L. Lightfoot [mailto:br...@the-lightfoots.com]

Subject: [LegacyUG] Window Size

This is mostly an irritating matter but it involves the main Legacy window
remembering the last window size when the program is re-opened. It may not
appear to most users who routinely view the Legacy program in a maximized
window but in my case, with a very large monitor, I use Legacy on the left half
of the screen while on the right half, I have a browser open with multiple tabs
to various online research sites. Thus my Legacy program is almost always at a
half-screen size. Only recently (in the past two weeks) have I noticed that if
I exit Legacy, and then later re-open it, Legacy opens to a very small default
window size (probably less than ¼ screen). I’m not sure if that was something
that happened only since the last update because prior to that, I tended to
have the same window open on the computer 24/7. Recent suggestions by Legacy
support have indicated that could be a bad practice because of automatic
Windows updates that could happen late at night.

I can’t find any option within Legacy to “remember last window size” (maybe
I’ve overlooked it) but I know that most Windows programs tend to always reopen
their window to the last used size. Legacy seems to be an exception to this
programmer’s rule of etiquette. Can anyone else confirm this behavior or is it
just some strange setting in my Legacy or Windows setup that I need to discover
and reset. Try re-sizing Legacy to half a screen size, then exit the program.
Re-open the program and see if it reopens to the same exact half-size or
something else.

RE: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report - in Word, etc. ?

2015-03-04 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Priscilla,

Another suggestion is to download the little free utility, Nemo PDF to Word.

http://www.nemopdf.com/pdf-to-word.html

It will convert your Legacy PDF reports to Word. I haven’t tried it with a
chart but the report conversions turned out very well. I use a lot of photos in
my database and all of the photos in my reports were converted to Word,
perfectly placed. I was amazed! I tried some editing and the formatting held,
which was another surprise. This might be another option for you.

For a free utility, it is worth every cent! J

Hi Priscilla,

You can save any of the book reports to .rtf which is rich text format which
will open in any word processor.

However, it sounds like you want a Descendant Chart with the option chosen to
pack information on one line.
This can be saved to either html or txt. Both can be opened in Word.
The Descendant Chart with the option to include marriage date and spouse's
parents, with format - pack information on one line is a great report.

These choices to save in other formats are below the Preview/Print button and
are made before you click the Preview button and then the Print button changes
into a Create button.

of the formats I see end up in a pdf, so that when I send it to my
cousin, she cannot add to it or subtract from it. If it were in Word
or some sort of format like that, she could add to it when children

Could someone please walk me through a way to do this?

RE: [LegacyUG] How to Add Unknown Children

2015-02-24 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
I don’t know about best way but if I wanted to add them to the family, I’d add
as gender unknown (which will show up as a different color) and use Infant
Surname as their names placeholder. Generally I add in double brackets in the
SUFFIX area the name of the dad. This info in double brackets won’t print
anywhere but it ID’s the infant for me in the name index.

You could otherwise add the information in the couple’s marriage notes but it
probably wouldn’t be as obvious to you there if your main purpose is to be
reminded to search for these children.

RE: [LegacyUG] Cleaning up Location list

2014-12-30 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Jane,

I ALWAYS enter my locations with city, county, state so my example may not work
as well for you but I used 'Search and Replace' to add USA to the end of a
particular state and it worked perfectly. Since there are only 50 states, it
wouldn't take but a few minutes to add USA to the end of each state. Plus, it
is unlikely you have entries for all 50 states so it should go even faster! :-)

We can't attach images to the list or I'd attach a screen shot of the Search
and Replace Window so you could see the settings but the following will
hopefully describe what I did once the 'Search and Replace' window was open:

Open 'Search and Replace'

Find Where: Lists-Location

Find What: Arkansas

Replacement text: Arkansas, USA

How to Find:

Find whole word only .. ... is ticked
Match case is ticked
Anywhere in field .. is ticked

How to Replace:

Replace only found text with replacement text . is ticked

Another easy way to help in cleaning up your location list is to 'combine'
locations where appropriate. That can be quicker and easier than editing each
location. Just be certain both locations are/should be IDENTICAL except for
spelling.

From the Menu Bar, Go to: View Master Lists Location

Yell Co, Ark
Yell CO, AR
Yell County, Arkansas

All three instances could be combined to use Yell County, Arkansas. Of course,
you can only combine one into one other location with each instance, but in the
example I showed, it could be done by using Combine two times in order to reach
the desired result. Very simple to do. Just be CERTAIN the locations are
identical.

In my example, I would HIGHLIGHT Yell County, Ark in my location list, then
click on 'Combine' then I'd locate and HIGHLIGHT Yell County, Arkansas and
click on 'Combine With' and everywhere Yell County, Ark was used in my database
would now be Yell County, Arkansas.

Next I would go to Yell CO, AR in my location list, highlight it and follow the
same instructions. In a matter of seconds, all Yell County, Arkansas locations
are spelled the way I want them to be spelled.

Not every version of a location can be handled this way, but for those that
qualify, it is a quick and clean process.

Rob,

I’m afraid I’m at a loss. Perhaps now that you’ve described your problem with
more detail, someone else will recognize this oddity and can offer a suggestion.

If it were me, I would look to the specific photo. It sounds like it must be
something odd about this photo. Perhaps remove it, then re attach to this
individual. Before re attaching, re name the photo. Now try creating your html
pages and see if it shows up.

Is this a recently added photo to your database?

What style of internet pages are you attempting to create? Maybe this would
help other Legacy users to offer suggestions.

MEL,

thanks for thinking with me. I did all you suggested. Upgraded to the latest
version of 7.5 and checked all you mentioned. But no solution

It is the descendants report where the problem is. When I generate it as an RTF
report, no problem. When I generate it as an HTML report, no problem. But when
I generate it as Internetpages then the picture is not included in the pics
directory. Checking the HTML-source it also shows that the needed HTML code is
not included. No HTML code what so ever for this particular individual. However
pictures from an event from him are included, as the picture for his wife.

This individual has died, so not an issue with privacy. And when I look in the
media overview, his picture is checked and there are no other personal pictures
on him. Only pictures linked to events.

I do not know what to do anymore..

Again, thanks for your support,

Rob

RE: [LegacyUG] Source clean up problem

2014-12-07 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Barbara,

Can you duplicate each basic source in Source Writer to get the look you want
when used in a report, then figure out how to edit and paste the formatted info
into your basic source that will closely achieve the same style? Once done,
when you save the edit, it will ask if it should be applied to all uses of the
source or to create a new source. If applied to all instances of this source,
then it would give you the same result as if combining, except it would still
be recognized as a basic source in Legacy. This might take a little thought but
would at least get the source style updated. Might this act as a work around?

Then set your preferences to use Source writer for all new sources entered and
move forward with your research.

RE: [LegacyUG] Attaching Media (Specifically, Copies of Documents)

2014-12-06 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Hi Dennis,

Another idea to consider while you’re working with a particular item of media,
you might want to link a copy to your individual as well. I link copies of
death certificates, birth certificates, military records, a register report
I’ve come across on line that I might want to refer to for tips, etc. to the
individual by attaching them in the individual’s media gallery. This way I can
open the gallery, open the particular item and easily study if questions arise.
It is also a quick way to see how I’ve named the file, which allows me to
quickly locate the item if I want to share a copy with another researcher.

If you don’t want them to print in an album, attach records as a pdf file. They
will be ignored if you print an individual’s album.

So nice to see you feeling up to working with your genealogy again.

It sounds like you might have clicked on the shortcut for Legacy v7.5. There

Look for a shortcut of a bright blue icon with a white L in the center. Legacy

folder in your documents folder. To my knowledge, it doesn’t overwrite Legacy

I’m not certain why you might be getting an error message if you have indeed,

person 'might' belong. If you find the person doesn't belong to the family

they do belong but should be entered with another family, unlink from parents,

Kathy,

The Relationship Calculator can create simple charts. To get what I think
you’re asking about, you first would set the relationships by using you as the
focus person. Go to Tools set relationships with you as the focus person.

Then you use the Relationship Calculator to get the simple line chart by
selecting your g grandfather as the left hand person. The relationship
calculator will then calculate the relationship for you. You can fancy it up
and print it to a pdf file or to a simple text file that can be copied and
pasted into an email. You can use this same method to even show how you’re
related to some distant relative or even how you might be related by marriages
to a non relative.

If this is something that will suit your needs and you need more step by step

2014-08-14 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Following the problems Cheryl was having trying to figure out how to tag a
family line in order to create Name Tags for a family reunion, I took a
first look at the process.

I must admit this is a very neat feature of Legacy v8. To be able to include
a photo of the named person on the Name Tag, to include a small descendant
chart of the person in relation to their place in the family and to be able
to add the name of the Family Reunion really makes the Name Tags personal to
each recipient! To be able to create these printed Name Tags from your
database with a few clicks of the mouse is a real time saver and makes a
great contribution to a family reunion.

Well done, Legacy!

Thanks, Cheryl, for bringing this feature to my attention.

RE: [LegacyUG] Switch From FTM 2014

2014-07-30 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
I’m a bit late to this thread so it’s possible I’ve completely misunderstood
the problem. If I’ve understood correctly, would this help? Import the gedcom
again, but use a different name for the file, and use the setting that will
result in clean notes. Then you could tag everyone who has a note, then open
the two files side by side and copy and paste the properly formatted note to
replace the goofed up note. As you finish a copy and paste, untag the person
and go to the next tagged person and repeat. Use the individual tag box in the
lower right hand part of the screen; this will move you from tagged person to
tagged person quickly.

This might at least speed up the process by allowing you to copy and paste
quickly. It would certainly be quicker than correcting each note individually.

If I’m out in left field, please take into account my advanced age! J

This is so TRUE.

And it would work.

If you could just get the spell checker to review each note for errors and
prompt you to review those for corrections.

Even better is to have a 'switch' that knows you are repairing broken words and
when it finds a mis-spelled word it automatically checks to see if removing the
space before or after solves the issue.

With that type of tool, I could fix all my issues in an hour!

What Legacy needs is a simple (?) addition to the search/replace mechanism.

a) Search any Notes field
b) For a spelling mistake
c) When found, pop up the standard spellcheck screen

Jane,

I love the style and content of this report and feel it would be a wonderful
addition to the Legacy Reports. The old Family Origins Genealogy software
allowed one to select the individual facts/events to be included in a given
report. It was a nice option.

I hope you've already sent in a request to Legacy requesting this report style.

we could control which facts we would include in the text.

It is just one direct line between a person and his/her ancestor and the

RE: [LegacyUG] Entering Unknown People

2014-02-24 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Susan,

I don’t know what might be considered the correct way but my personal
preference is to use (_) for an unknown name. I enter everything based
on the way it reads in the narrative descendant report and I like to have the
reader see immediately where a name is unknown. Sometimes I get unexpected help
because their eye is drawn to the ‘hole’ in the report.

Whatever you decide to use, if anything, if you’re consistent, you can use a
search and replace, should you ever decide on a different style of placeholder.
This is the only unknown/ missing information that I identify with a
placeholder.

I think there are a few users on this list who have one name studies who can
hopefully address your questions.

If these people in your file aren’t linked, I don’t know what options you have
for reports other than an individual report or a customized report based on the
Index. Have you checked the Options under the Index tab to see if you can
include the information you require for your report. For an Event, click on the
Event, which will open a sub menu where you can select an individual event to
be shown in a column.

It might be helpful if you could tell us what types of information you feel
you’d want to see in your reports.

in 720P. If it doesn't switch automatically to 720P, you can make this
change under settings on the YouTube viewing screen. I hope this might be
helpful to Legacy users who recently asked about changing the colors of

All options were global in Legacy 7 and earlier. I can not find a good reason
why some settings are now only effective for each family file. When I select
certain settings, I want those to apply to every database that I open so that I
see the same effect with each one. It is frustrating to get the settings just
right and then open another database only to find that the preferred settings
are not still set.

Is there at least a method of copying all settings for one database such that
they will be the same for another database? Please describe how that might be
done with Legacy 8. Even with an Export to new Legacy Family File the
settings from the source file are not effective in the exported file.

Another possibility would be to have a table of the settings where the user
could determine which ones should be global and which should be family file
linked instead of having it hard-coded in the program.

import/convert that, rather than attempting to export/import a GEDCOM (if I've

RE: [LegacyUG] Listing children in Descendant Narrative Report

2013-10-15 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Fred,

Are you referring to the Descendant Book Report (Register Report)? If so, you
can change the wording for Married Couple under the Wording 1 tab to read:
‘children of this family’ or wording of your choice. Would this work for you?
Whatever you change it to will be reflected for all family groupings so it
can’t be too specific.

If this might work for you, you can also link each child to this mom-dad family
grouping, then designate each child as biological for Dad and stepmom for the
mother of this family group. Then under Report Options tick show child-parent
relationship in the report options and the status clarification will print
following each child. Please see example below (I don’t know if the minimum
formatting will hold when I post this message)

Children of this family:

2 M i. Joseph Doe2 was born on 10 Jun 1992 in

Alaska.1 (Relationship to Father: Step, Relationship to

Mother: Biological)

…. Or handle it in the notes of each child.

Joseph is Michael’s step-son.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Listing children in Descendant Narrative Report

I am trying to list all 5 children in a Descendant Narrative Report. But here
is the catch I'm having.

Janet H. is the blood line of the family I am reporting on.

Janet's 1st marriage to William H. They had 2 children, (I'll refer to them as
WRH and CRH) Marriage ended in divorce. So far so good in the report.

Now Janet's 2nd. marries Nick L. From a previous marriage, Nick L. had 3
children. (I'll refer to these children as MJL, MLL,and MAL) Nick and Janet did
not have children from this marriage.

Neither Janet nor Nick did any adoptions, all 5 children have their biological
fathers last name.

I realize that Nick L.'s children aren't bloodline as descendants in Janet's
family. However, both Janet and Nick raised all 5 children as one family, they
wish to show all 5 children in the Descendant Narrative report.

The report shows Janet's 1st husband and 2 children correctly. Then it shows
she marries Nick L. but no children lists. ( I have given Nick L. an Unknown
wife for his 1st. marriage showing they had children MJL, MLL and MAL)

So my question is...Is there a way, or how can I change the records so MJL, MLL
and MAL will also show up on the Descendant Narrative report. (and not show
Janet and Nick as having 3 children.)

Thanks to all who might be able to help me with this.

Fred H.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Standard Edition

2013-09-23 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
This is how I would do it …

Go to the Legacy website and download the installation file to each computer,
then run it to install.

If this isn’t practical, download the file to one computer, copy the install
file to a CD or flash drive, then go to each computer and install it from the
downloaded file.

I’m not certain what you mean by having the information identical on each
computer. Are you referring to the program or to genealogical data?

If the data, copy the same data file to each of the installed Legacy programs
by placing it in the Data folder inside the Legacy folder and then open Legacy,
go to fileopen family file, highlight your data file and click open.

If data is yet to be entered, if it were me, I’d enter the data on the master
computer, then copy the data file to the other computers on a regular basis to
maintain consistency. Maintain the same file name and just add a new date to
the end of the data file name each time you update the secondary computers so
you know what file is always in use and can see they are consistent among all
the computers.

I ‘think’ Legacy v7.5 defaults to the root of C: so you would look for the
program on the root of the local hard drive, unless you elect to install it
under C: program files (x86)

If you have more questions, just ask. There are lots of knowledgeable people

RE: [LegacyUG] Reports - Event Formatting

2013-09-07 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Kathy,

You can get something like what you want by altering ONE event sentence for the
event.

The example I used was the Immigration Event and the entered information will
read in the order you requested …

Event Name - Date - Location - Description

I altered one sentence definition for “if only date and place entered”

…by removing the default fields and entering

[EventName] - [Date] - [Place] - [Notes] [Sources]

When the information is entered in the sequence you requested, it would read
in your report as:

Immigration - 1 Jan 1932 - New York - by ship

The key here is to NOT fill in the Description field in the Event but to move
the Description to the notes.

If you thought it might be difficult to remember just how you set it up, you
could even save this event to a new name such as Immigration Summary, leaving
the default Immigration event intact in case you ever wanted to use it with
full features. If you saved it to a new name, just turn off the Description
Box, which would force you to remember to put your description in the notes.

Is there any way of re-organising the order in which the List Style formatting
of the Events displays in the reports?

At the moment it displays in columns

Event Name - Description - Date - Location

I'd like to be able to move Description after Location so that I have

Event Name - Date - Location - Description

Is this possible? If so, where am I missing the (probably obvious) settings for
this to happen?

Jay,

Did you add each burial site as a child of the cemetery? I would think, if the
burial sites were entered this way, a FGS report (it would be very longJ) could
then include each entrant and headstone photo. If not, I wonder if there is a
simple way to make all the entries a child of the parent ‘cemetery’? Even
linking individually, it shouldn’t take too long.

I have finished transcribing and adding an entire cemetery to a legacy database
file. How can I create a report for the 500 images that are linked to their
respective owners?

I know I can tag all of the persons listed as buried at that cemetery place,
but not sure what kind of report will allow me to simply print those results
with the images showing as well?

Any suggestions?

Kay, I'm so sorry you're having to go through all of this work again. I don't
really have a suggestion other than to maintain the exact folder structure. If
doing that, I'd expect you could just open each folder and have Legacy
recognize the photos and files again but I can't confirm this behavior with
Legacy.

Actually, in my Legacy photo albums, if I attach a pdf file in the album by
clicking on 'file', I can see an icon (the video icon is what is attached to
the pdf file) in the album and if I click on the icon, the pdf file will open.
I can't speak to a rtf file and how it would display in the album on the
computer screen as I've never attempted to attach this file format. I'd expect
it would display on screen like a pdf file. I think the only files that will be
included and PRINT in a photo album are the photos. I'm using the 7.5 deluxe
version of Legacy.

PDF and RTF files can be attached in the Picture Gallery using the File
button in the Deluxe Edition or a Sound or Video button in the Standard Edition.

Only pictures will show in a Photo Album or Scrapbook although all multimedia
files will be included in the Multimedia List created through View Scrapbook.

RE: [LegacyUG] Another wish

2013-06-30 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Mary,

To add to Jenny’s helpful reply:

A suggestion would be to enter the beginning double bracket in the Event name
without a space, following the Event Name.

Example: Living[[…]] as opposed to: Living [[…]]

When you type in the name of the event to bring it up, type a privacy bracket
immediately following the event name. If you’ve saved an ‘edited event’ with
the privacy brackets to alert you, typing the first bracket following the Event
name will bring up the edited Event. If nothing shows up beyond the name of the
event you’re wanting to use, no edited version has been saved. The privacy
brackets option is one of the best features of Legacy, in my opinion.

If you like to frequently change things around, using the same event, you can
also still use and show the fields in your event list, but by taking out the
canned sentences and just using [Notes][Sources] in the sentence definitions,
you can enter/format the information in any way you wish in the notes section,
which I tend to favor, as it reads easier in the narrative reports. Or you can
pick and choose for a specific Event, depending on the fields filled in, which
ones are free flowing and which ones are canned.

Ticking show the 3 fields will only mean they will display and show any ‘filled
in’ information in your Events list. The sentence definitions is what
determines what is printed in the reports.

Goof around until you arrive at what works best for you.

RE: [LegacyUG] Obituary Event

2012-11-16 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Marg,

You aren’t the only one; I have some of those clippings, too! For these, I use
as a lead in for the obituary transcription in the Obituary Event notes:

… he (or she) was remembered in a published obituary

And then I type in the obituary transcription

If we have a clipping, we ‘know’ it was published somewhere, even if we don’t
know the particulars. As a suggestion, if you want to source the clipping,
create a generic ‘Newspaper Clipping’ and explain in the source detail how you
came to have the clipping.

I also prefer to use the full text of the obituaries in the Obituary Event
notes and have it print out in the narrative reports. My intent is for the
interest of the family reader, mostly elderly, and they like to read the
obituaries. If you aren’t going to publish, format your family history to
please your family and yourself. Legacy allows us a lot of leeway to
personalize our reports.J

Mary

From: Marg Strong [mailto:tiny...@yahoo.com]

Am I the only person who has inherited news clippings without any publication
info? Not even a date or newspaper? Not much source there, I'm afraid. When I
source the event with the clipping, it's really dry. Unknown newspaper,
unknown date, unknown place. If I pick facts from the obit to add to events,
such as occupation, residence, etc (mostly because the timetable is important
to me), they will sometimes be events using that same source. The content of
the obit holds events in it. The source is definitely what information one has
about it's source. Hope that makes sense!

RE: [LegacyUG] How to source Find A Grave

2012-08-03 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
I use the URL as a generic source, then simply paste the copied memorial number
in the citation text that pops up;

Example: Find A Grave Memorial# 50043453

Example of how the source could look in the sources Index at the end of the
report:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi, 'Find A Grave', Find A Grave
Memorial# 50043453.

… or (a different way of formatting the source)

'Find A Grave' - http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi, Find A Grave
Memorial# 50043453.

When you go to the Find A Grave website search page, simply copy and paste the
memorial number …. 50043453 … into the spot for the memorial number, click
on search and you’re taken directly to the sourced memorial. Each FAG memorial
is assigned a unique number and there is a spot on the search page to insert
this number, if known. This number is found in the very last line of each
memorial, under the contributors name and date the memorial was created.

Quick and easy way to locate the sourced memorial at “Find A Grave”.

Oops, just read the original question. I don’t use the new source writer; still
use the basic sources for formatting my sources. Will go ahead and post this,
as it might help someone like me who still uses the original Legacy basic
source formatting.

The problem that I see with that is that many of FAG memorials do not have any
of these, they only have name, date/dates and place of burial. Since I prefer
to lump sources together I want one source for FAG. I use the generic source,
title it Burial Records-findagrave with the URL as http://www.findagrave.com/ .
I add it to the source to the clipboard, then when I'm ready to add FAG
records, I create the Event Burial Records-findagrave I add the
information that's available, such as family links, personal /or tombstone
photo/photos, and who submitted it and when. With the Edit

One suggestion would be to expand the photo canvas on the bottom, then add the
date (or name and date or whatever information you wish to add) by adding the
info into a text box. I usually ‘save as’ and give the edited photo a new name,
just so I can keep the original. This process is easy to do by using the free
FastStone Image viewer software utility at http://www.faststone.org/

I’m sure other photo editing software offers the same type of option. It sounds
like this process might be complicated but it only takes a minute to complete
once you know the few steps to take. Even though I own several full featured
software editing packages, a small utility that works well and fast is usually
what I reach for when this type of change or addition is needed.

the labels for the various Notes can be removed so they don’t print in the

Go to the Book Reports, click on the Narrative Report or other style book

delete. You can add them back if you later decide you want them to print.

something) and type this each time for these characters.

[LegacyUG] Flip-Pal Scanner question

May I ask a favor of a Flip Pal scanner user . would you send an example of
a small newspaper article scan to me via email? I would like to order this
little scanner from the Legacy Store before the discount ends but I don't
know anyone personally who uses this scanner so am begging on bended knee
for a sample scan. :-)

My thanks for your consideration.

2011-12-02 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
A big thanks, Jenny. I didn't know that had been included as an option for the
book reports so I've learned something new about Legacy this morning. After
taking a look, I see each item of information is preceded by a label, which I
don't care for. However, for those users who prefer the list type of
information, this would work well. For anyone who uses this option, please
check to see if they can be searched (if searching is important to you) before
you make a big commitment to use them.

Very helpful discussion. Thanks again, Jenny, for sharing your knowledge of
Legacy.

Tony, so sorry for the misinformation.:-(

That's what I thought you were referring to.

If you look at Report OptionsInclude tab, bottom right hand corner is
headed Notes and there is a tick box for including Birth, christening,
death, burial.

RE: [LegacyUG] Cemeteries, Hospitals in Event Fields - Was: Locations

2011-12-02 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
I primarily use the narrative book reports so my data is entered based on how
it is displayed in those reports. For the family group sheets, yes, each event
has a line that separates the text of event notes. That appears to be hard
coded and cannot be removed. I don’t use the FGS but I see the events do still
follow my Events List so the text still flows as I’ve entered it.

I’d be happy to send a PDF example by email if you’d like to see how identical
data is printed in a narrative register report versus the FGS.

Very interesting approach, Mary. Which reports do you use? On the Family
Group Report I have a line that separates each event. I don't see how that can
be removed. Am I missing something?

First, I don't think the information in the vitals notes prints anywhere.

If you put the burial notes in an Event note, you can have it placed exactly
where you want it to read in the narrative reports. The individual events can
be moved up and down in the 'List of Events', depending on what information you
have for the person. A simple example below shows two events that follow the
block of vitals in a Legacy Descendant Book report for Ada. If I wanted to have
the burial note read below the obituary, I'd just highlight it and move it
under the Obituary event in the 'List of Events'. As you can see, for the
burial location, I add the Cemetery Name in (...) following the city. This way,
I can search and create a list of burials in each cemetery and they also sort
well in the location list. I don't enter anything in the 'general notes' or any
of the vitals notes. I created an event called 'Notes' instead so I can arrange
my narrative to read the way I want. You can't tell by this example, but I can
attach a photo of Ada's headstone to the first note following the block of
vitals and the photo will be included in the report. Another bonus is each
Notes Event can be sourced. The cemetery address, phone number, directions,
etc. I add to the location notes for each cemetery and it prints in the
Locations Index. My goal is to try to produce interesting Narrative reports for
my family. If you haven't gotten too far along with your data input, try a few
different things, with an eye toward what is important to you. Legacy is very
flexible. My suggestion would be to try and settle on your style of data input
and then be consistent.

Malcolm,

I am now considering the iPhone 4s or iPad 2 and would like to use Families for
ONLY viewing my Legacy database on the iPhone or iPad.

I would not wish to do any editing. Is it possible to use your app in this

then occasionally update TO the iPhone 4s or iPad2, _NEVER_ FROM the iPhone

Is this possible?

Olwyn,

I really do wish that I shared your confidence that the printing of ‘unknown’
would be corrected. The bur, and that is what it is, arose very shortly after
version 7 was released and nothing has been done about it to date.

The only work-around is to use a word processor and delete all instances of “
and unknown”, “ unknown and“ (note the space at the start of both and then
“unknown”. A total pain in the neck!

Olwyn,

For the ‘Had No Children’, go to the report options and under Include, tick the

For the word Unknown, go to Options Customize Data Format and look to the

your descendant report.

When I print the descendant's report I would like to include a line to indicate
the couple had no children. Just the same as in the screen reference Had no
children. Is it possible? Also I would like to exclude the word Unknown for
printing when I do not have the father's name in the report. I'm would rather
a blank space or another description e.g +..My older sister's
father is unknown (my mother won't tell and refuses to discuss ) I just
don't feel comfortable when I show my sister the tree and this word is there.
If there is an in place solution would appreciate a heads up.

RE: [LegacyUG] Adding Pictures

Joan,

If you have a ton of these attached as graphic images, then my suggestion might
not have value but if you have only a limited number, I would suggest using the
free graphic viewer from Faststone to convert your graphic images of
certificates into PDF files, then reattach as a file. This will avoid attached
documents being displayed on your family view as a photo.

I've used this utility for several years and convert all of my genealogy
certificate images to PDF files before attaching. After this, one click in
Legacy and the PDF file will open into Adobe Reader, where you can easily study
the document. About the only images I regularly attach in Legacy that are
graphic files are people photos and tombstone photos.

One image this works beautifully with are the Texas Death Certificates, offered
online as a graphic file. I just convert them to PDF files and attach. So easy
to go back and review them, or email a copy to another researcher. In Adobe
Reader, you can increase the size on screen, to bring up close, details on the
certificate.

To convert, just open your image in the viewer, do a 'save as' and select PDF.
Your original image is untouched, leaving you with the graphic image of the
document plus the same document in PDF format.

RE: [LegacyUG] Adding Pictures

2011-08-21 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
No Kim, it doesn’t. I attach all PDF documents to each individual person for
whom the documents apply. This way, they show up all in a row when I click on
the photo icon, making it easy for me to see what I have collected. Go to one
of your entries that has a person photo attached. Pretend you are going to
attach another photo for this person but Click on FILE instead, then browse to
a pdf file somewhere on your hard drive and click on it to SELECT it. (it
won’t matter what the pdf file is as you will remove the attachment as soon as
your experiment is over)

Now choose OPEN, and when the next screen opens, you can add a caption, etc. if
wanted. I usually put in Death Certificate, Marriage Certificate or something
that will quickly indicate to me what the file contains. Now click on OK. You
will see the little file icon in a slot in the Picture Gallery. Now click on
“Print Photo Album” and then click on Preview. On screen, you will see that the
only thing that prints in the photo album are the photos.

Now simply highlight the file icon of the PDF file you just attached and click
on Remove. All is back to where you began.

For me, to see the documents quickly and easily and to be able to attach a copy
of the PDF document to email and send to another researcher, right from Legacy,
is a big plus and time saver for me.

RE: [LegacyUG] Using Source Clipboard

2011-07-26 Thread Mary Fowler Leek

Well, then, double shame on me :-) Goes to show the truth of what my husband
used to tell me, you know what happens when you assume.

I've gone back and checked some of my entries and find events that do not carry
the same source citation as the vital events so I must have used it correctly
at least some of the time. Still doesn't ease my pain, though, as I'm certain I
also used it incorrectly many times. :-(

Anyway, my thanks for the tip, going forward. My bad; I certainly should have
known, I didn't, but do now.

RE: [LegacyUG] Copying Text into a Legacy Note

2010-12-11 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
There is a little utility called ABBYY Screenshot Reader that will read your
scanned text from your computer screen and convert it to text, which can be
then pasted into the notes of Legacy. It costs $10 and is one of the best ten
dollars I've ever spent. I own and use Abbyy OCR software and Adobe Acrobat 9
Pro Extended but this little utility does things so simply and fast, that I use
it for anything I can see on screen and want to quickly convert to text. As
with all OCR software, it usually isn't 100% but comes pretty close and is far
faster than re typing. I always paste the text into TextPad and check it over
before pasting into my Legacy notes.

Here is a link to the Abbyy website and to the utility. You can download and
try for free for 15 days to see if it is something that would work well for
you. I've used Abbyy products for several years now and have been extremely
pleased with their products and their support.

(I can't remember if Photo was a Legacy Master Event or if I created

Re: [LegacyUG] reports/books

2010-07-27 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Kathy,

Unless there's a big 'something' I haven't thought of, I've decided to use
Legacy for creating my reports and charts to a book in Publishing Center,
saved to a pdf file and then finishing my 'books' in Adobe Acrobat.
KISS is what I'm looking for (Keep It Simple, Stupid). :-)

Most programs can now save files to PDF format and of course, PDF files can
be read easily on any computer. You can create pages of photos in a
wordprocessor or a publishing program, saved to PDF or scan pages of photos
or documents to PDF file(s), that can then be inserted in the properly
titled placeholder in your Legacy 'book'. I believe the finished PDF file
can be printed at a commercial site (Kinko's, Staples or Office Depot) to a
hard copy, retaining all of the formatting styles. Titled placeholders will
be included in the Table of Contents. For instance, you could have pages of
family photos titled Frank Smith family, Jeff Smith family and if you
wish to include copies of documents, those could be titled Documents or be
more specific with types or which family they belong to. The table of
contents would reflect the titled placeholders and their location in the
book. If you share your book in pdf format with computer literate family
members, you can also quickly set and use bookmarks to navigate through your
book if it's going to be read on a computer screen.

If you don't own Adobe Acrobat, you can usually pick up an older version of
Adobe Acrobat on eBay for much less than the latest version and they work
just fine for combining and saving groupings of PDF files.

For now, this is my plan. I have no interest in publishing a book for anyone
other than family so cannot comment on what would work well for a
professional project. I've always entered my information with an eye on how
it looks and reads in one of the narrative reports, so other than my book
extras, my reports read fairly well without any additional editing.

I quickly threw some titles and reports into a 'Book' in Legacy Publishing
Center and saved the Table of Contents. If the formatting holds at all, this
should give you some idea of what you could expect.

Has anyone used Legacy to create a book? I have put this project off
for quite awhile, not wanting to duplicate my efforts due to an
insufficient program. I need to create some sort of book for about 5
different lines for different people and I want to include all the
usual information - pedigree, timeline, photographs, documents and
more personal notes and details about the individuals, families the
areas lives they lived. I don't know if I can use Legacy for the
entire project, or if I should use it partially and paste pages into
another program or if I should import Legacy data somewhere else for
this type of project. I have a lot of pictures that I wouldn't
necessarily import into Legacy but might use in a book; then again,
maybe I should? I might have dozens or more pictures of a particular
individual or family that would be nice in a scrapbook/album type
format.

Thank you for your comments suggestions, Kathy

I use and have done so for a long time, (_) in place of an unknown
name when I am entering a new person. This way it prints out in my reports
like the example below. I don't have to do anything more unless I discover
the missing name. It is easy to edit and type in the name, once known. This
provides a quick reminder to anyone reading the report that the name is
unknown and for many of my family, encourages them to help by providing the
missing information, if known. It isn't ideal but for me, I prefer it to any
other visual for showing/displaying a missing or unknown name. ... Mary

Wow .. sorry for the typos down there !!! Let me repost this. The
first paragraph was a mess.

This is better:

Yes, Legacy's format is D-M-S. You can use the coordinates calculator
to convert to D-M-S if need be, or you can calculate yourself,
multiplying or dividing by 60 as appropriate.

For example, GPS devices often use Degrees-Minutes and fractions of
minutes rather than seconds. A latitude reading of 40 35.202 (40
degrees, 35.202 minutes) would convert to 40-35-12.12 in D-M-S format
 (.202 x 60 = 12.12).

Sites like Epodunk use decimal degress only, for example 40.5867
degrees. To convert to D-M-S, multiple the decimals by 60, and repeat
 = 40 degrees plus .5867 x 60 = 35.202 minutes plus .202 x 60 = 12.12
 seconds, or 40d 35m 12.12s.

 Make sense?

2010-01-05 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Bob,

I may be misunderstanding your comment below regarding the data being removed
from the individual but if the Notes event is attached to the individual, it
prints with the individual. If it is attached to the marriage, it reads in the
marriage information. It is the same as placing the information in the General
or Marriage Notes, you just have more control over where it shows up in the
narrative plus you can attach a photo as well as separately source information
to each Notes event.

A personally created event is used just like the included Named events would be
with an individual or a marriage to attach/ include information for the family
group.

I experimented with Mary's suggestion and with an event 'Notes', you can move
the data to any spot in the End notes. However, it sort of loses appeal to me
when the data is not with the individual in a book narrative. If you have a
500 page book, the individual note (now an event) is listed on page 385
(example only) and seems to remove the 'history' from the immediate individual.
Guess it is all in one's preference, but it is an interesting concept. -

Cathy,

In order to organize your report with the notes at the beginning,
just
create a new 'event' titled Notes and copy and paste your hard
coded notes
into the event titled Notes. After that is done and you're sure you
have the
notes section all copied, then delete the identical information
from the
section of hard coded notes. This way, you can shift this new event
all
around among the events so it will read and print as and where
you'd like it
to within the report. With an event, you can also add in (attach) a
photo.
While the photos usually are quite small (maybe someday we'll be
allowed to
size them as we'd like) at least they add some interest to the
events.

If you'd like to see a report that I can produce using an event
titled
notes, as well as some of the original named events, rather than
using the
hard coded Notes, I'll create a short one in a pdf file, attach to
an email
and send to you so you can see how I've used an event titled
'notes' to
write up some of my family history. This report can now be created
in a
second or two and I can shift and edit to my hearts content, should
I come
across more information or photo's I'd like to add to this family's
history.

I have Microsoft Word but .rtf loses the event pictures and .txt
loses all pictures + formatting.

The reasoning for moving the Notes to the top is I've used that
section to write a Family Biography (a story-type summary of the full
history of the husband and wife and their life together with family
stories and remembrances and descriptions of the personalities of the
people--kinda like you would seen in a biography book). I'd like the
flow to be the overall summary of the people followed by the facts
and events for the husband followed by the facts and events for
the wife followed by the facts and events for the marriage. A
reader can just read the overall summary or can get into more detail
by reading the facts with the detail of the Census', occupation (some
with pictures like the store they owned or an ad they ran),
residences with pictures of the house they lived in, etc.

I'm guessing what I want to do can't be done but thought I'd ask.

I'm preparing for a family reunion and have books with sections for
each marriage/family and would like the sections to begin with this
report followed by the photos and all documents for the couple.

I was going to mention PDF, but you said you can't change it to
OCR. Adobe Acrobat (not the PDF Reader) has OCR capabilities within
the program, but usually only for images that contain text. Sending
a Legacy report to PDF should be all text anyway so no OCR needed
for that and should retain all fonts. I don't know about PDF
knockoff programs. I know Acrobat is a bit pricey though.

The only other alternative is to use a word processor. If you don't
have one, you can always download OpenOffice.org which is free and a
full suite of office programs. Then to retain any special fonts and
formatting, you can export it to PDF.

I've found one of the best programs to have for genealogy is the
full version of Acrobat because you can scan everything into PDFs
and attach them to sources in Legacy.

I don't really understand the reasoning for moving the notes section
to the top. You mention it contains graphics. Are these source
graphics? Are the notes Footnotes/Endnotes? Are you trying to make
the report accessible by others so they can make their own changes?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Family Group Report with Editable Text and Pictures

Is there a way to create a Family Group Report that retains the
formatting and the individual event pictures but has the ability to
move the Notes to the beginning of the report?

I tried .txt but that loses the pictures and the bold headlines and
text (I know I can manually add the photos and change each headline
and other text to bold but that's very time consuming for how many
families I have).

I tried .pdf but it can't be changed to OCR which is required for me
to move the Notes section to the beginning of the report (I assume
because there's pictures which are graphics?).

I tried .html but I can't move the Notes section.

If I copy it to the clipboard, it's a graphic of the report and I
can't move the Notes section.

I tried sending the Descendant and Descendant Narrative reports to
.rtf but they do not contain the event pictures.

If there's no way to do it, I'll use the Descendant Narrative in

I just sent message with a large attachment to the LUG instead of the
individual requesting it. I so hope the new server blocks attachments or you
are all going to want to throw me off the the user list! I'm so very sorry
for not paying more attention. I should stick to being a lurker!
