RE: MD: Audiophase MD Player On Sale for $99 at Best Buy
I took a look at the MDP1 and the problem is I couldn't find any specs for it. How long is the battery life? How many seconds of shock protection? How good is the sound quality?(Paul Johnson) When I displayed it, I took a look at the manual, and I believe it said that the battery life of the included NIMH was 6 hours, whereas an ordinary AA would be only 4 or 5. You'd think it would be other way around, so perhaps it was a misprint, or I misread it. I didn't look for any specs regarding the shock protection. I couldn't tell you anything about the sound quality, as I did not try to play an MD in it. Does anyone have a web site for Audiophase? When I do a search on it all I seem to find is the Best Buy web site, my own web site and a couple of others, but not audiophase.(J. Coon) Audiophase's website is evidently www.audiophase.com, and it is in construction. From the looks of it, it's a Kenwood DMC J3 clone. The NiMH AA cell and the fact someone else does a cheapo version of it ( Goodmans, UK), confirms this. MDCP says the Kenwood's unit is their own design, so it's not a Sony based design.(Richard) Well, just because that is what the MDCP says, doesn't mean that it is right. Not all of the Kenwoods appear to be original in design. The chip may be their own, but I have my doubts about some of their physical designs. Anyway, aside from the similarity in battery compartments (a similarity both models share with the Sony MZ-E33), the MDP1 really doesn't look like the DMC J3. Note that the MDP1 has no controls on the top. It really looks more like a Sony design. Compare even the X design on the Audiophase with the X design on the EP11 and E44. The transport mechanism, moreover, looks very much like that of a Sony's (although it has more plastic components). Furthermore, the remote resembles an older Sony 'quarter-sized' remote, and the included headphones look very much like a pair of Sony headphones. MD: MR100, Sony R90 or Sharp 831?
Hi Everyone, I would really appreciate you input on this one. Ok, I will be in HK from 29th Sep - 9 October. I am looking to upgrade my MZ-R50. So, what should I do? I am interested in the Panasonic MR100 and (to a lesser extent) a Sharp 831/832, both of which I can purchase at a good price while in HK. But I am really interested in one of those great Silver Sony MZ-R90s, which I would have to mail-order from Japan/HK to Australia So what should I do?!?!??! Help :) Thanks All, LW. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: MD on UK's 'Taggart' show
On last night's 'Taggart', they had a better advert for MD than Sony have produced in 6 years of marketing! There were at least 3 references to it throughout the two-hour show. The first MD 'scene' consisted of one guy showing another his MD portie. The other guy asks what is it, and the first one says "It's Minidisc, which allows you to make your own recordings of CD quality music". He then lends his phones to the second guy who listens for a mo says "It's great, could you get me one?" Later on we see the guy taking stack of MD boxes from a warehouse (I think they said 'Aiwa' on them, but can't be sure). Later, the chief detective is pictured looking at a portie saying "That's neat, I think I'll get one". Roll on more shows with MD friendly script writers NB: For those of you not familiar with 'Taggart' it is a Glasgow-based detective series which has sadly gone downhill since the actor who played the gritty character after whom the show is named passed away a few years back. I think it was exported for a while to the States where the Glaswegian accents had to be subtitled ;-) All quotes are approximate. Re: MD: R90 and end search
I think we all have it wrong. I think Sony uses the END SEARCH button like a politician. It gives people something to talk about Sony and keeps their name in the public eye. Good or bad it is still there. Another reason is to sell prerecorded minidisks because you can't mess those up by inadvertently pressing record and not using END SEARCH. G Shawn R. RE: MD: R90 and end search
Dear All, In general it strikes me that ES is not such a smart idea, it doesn't add any functionality that other portables don't have as you can over record on other units if you want to. It does mean that users (with good memories or no) can more easily make a mistake. I'm no expert in the design of consumer products, but I would imagine that it is a good design principle to make the machine smart rather than assuming that the user will be. HOWEVER if a few users like end search for whatever reason, wouldn't it make sense for Sony to at least give users the ability to turn the "feature" on or off, rather like the auto start feature on Sharp portables can be turned on or off? I do find it pretty strange that Sony decks behave like CD players in terms of operation but there portables seem to behave like tape. Its either a good idea or its not and if its good enough (bad enough) for one range, why not the other? RE: MD: R90 and end search
Hi, I always thought that ES was a dumb idea. I had read all this thread and it made me think about why sony did this and why we don't saw what the point of ES. Every one of us use his/her portie to record CD or music from other audio sources. Maybe Sony thought that most users will use their MD to record voice (conference, lecture or their own voices) like a dictaphone. In this case you use MD like an audio tape, erasing what you don't need by overwritting by new material. It explain why home deck don't have this feature. Remember that Sony is selling music en MD so i think they prefer that people buy prerecorded MD. And one explaination for the difficult take-off of MD's is the non-avaibility of a wide prerecorded MD catalogue. But who cares, I think most people bougth their MD portie for recording CD. Maybe the rigth solution is to offer ES as an option. MD: : Re: Digital Recording: why is volume low?
When digital dubbing, it's important not to record the signal any higher than the "0" mark or you'll get clipping and distortion (when making a digital recording--analog things like cassette decks let you go over the "0" a tad before you start to hear distortion). Whilst I agree with this statement totally, in principle, it does seem that somehow the Sony engineers have allowed for accidental excursions over the 0dB mark. "0" indicates the largest number that can be expressed, and the "over" indicator means that you've exceeded that number, so clipping *will* occur. In all but the most stringent listening environments, occasional clipped peaks are almost impossible to detect. Most would have a difficult time hearing even moderate clipping on a portable unit with "fold-up" headphones or ear buds. But be aware that clipping *does* occur every time the "over" indicator lights, so one should consider whether the resulting distortion will be masked by noise and distortion in the source material or playback environment. Solutions to the problem of not-enough-headphone-level include outboard amplifiers, changing to a unit that has higher output voltage (usually one with more available battery voltage) and changing to more sensitive headphones. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thats right - it will "rip" tracks at 4x (depended on CD quality / errors) Anyone else know about this (or did I miss the discussion?) Don't know about the Sony, but Sharp have a bookshelf system out (the MD-M3H) which can copy from CD to MD faster than realtime. I believe it's about 2x faster than normal. It sells for ~350 UKP, there's a review of it in the October What Hifi? I looked at this unit in Best Buy and didn't see any stop/play/track controls on the unit itself. I expected them to be on the bottom like the Sony units, but didn't see any. Of course, it was hard to get a good look at it because of those cages Best Buy keeps them in. Does this mean you can operate it only with the remote (which looked kind of cheap and easily breakable)? Or did I just miss the controls somewhere? MD: tapers experience with SONY-MD and CSB mics
hi all, i was thinking of getting myself a taping set-up. for microphones i want to use the CSB (core-sounds binaureal) mics (the standard version, not low or high end). also, i first thought of getting a DAT recorder, but because of the price i have decided to go for MD after all. now, before i really purchase this, i really would like to know if any1 here already has experience with this set-up, and if so, is it any good? the equipment i was thinking of buying was (as mentioned) the CSB and a SONY MZ-R50. i'm not really a crack on MD equipment, so maybe someone could suggest a better deck than the MZ-R50? what's the exact difference between the R35 and the R50 anyway, besides the fact that the 50 is smaller? looking at the manual, the 50 also has less recording/play time... so, if you know a better deck (size is not the main issue with the deck., as long as it's a portable:-), i.e. it won't do if i have to carry a suitcase to transport the thing.. the quality matters, and the features.) then i'd really appreciate all the help i can get. thanx matthias - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

They also have Automatic record level control, which is very handy if you want to record something and not have to worry about setting levels. You can override this function and set level manually if you want. I copied them to the computer, and edited them, converted them to MP3 and posted to a web site. I used the Demo version of Cool Edit to work with the files on the computer. I recorded from the analog line out because portables don't have a digital out. I used a Sound Blaster Live Value sound card. I haven't had a chance to try the digital out form the Hoontech card. http://members.tripod.com/Liteways/index.html There is also a link to the mike construction project. There is also a link to Sound Professionals in case you want to buy a stereo mike. I am not familiar with the Mac computer. this is what I really want it to do: 1)To record live audio using a Stereo Mic (that is another thing I could use suggestions on...) 2)Load this audio onto my mac into Digital Performer and other audio programs for edit/additions. I have a mac G3 with firewire and USB connections, so I want to try to get a digital out. I haven't yet seen a portable with optical out. Even if I do, will this work with my computer? I have a decend amount of experience with general audio and computer audio, but this is my first minidisk endeavor. Any help would be greatly appreciated and welcomed. :) Nice to be here... -=James Cool name. -- Jim Coon Not just another pretty mandolin picker mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] If Gibson made cars, would they sound so sweet? Re: MD: V2 Boycott and V2's deception.
I had said previously about the post of V2's message to the MiniDiscusion boards, Why did the post come from somewhere else? My guess is that someone who received it in email posted it, and it was not posted by anyone at V2. Mark has said since, | ... it seems obvious that the policy did not come directly from V2. Once | again why is this. Probably the person who received it in email and posted it to the MiniDiscussion boards felt (s)he was doing a service, and was also trying to do his/her view of the honest thing by duplicating the email address and name from the emailed message onto the post. Whoever it was probably did not understand the important difference in this specific situation between V2's saying it privately and their stating it publicly. V2's actions remind me of King Saul when he violated the ban on the Amalekite spoils ... | Very well said. OK - so I saw the add in a comic book (Hitman if you must know) It seem Sony has a new unit that has a CD player and a MD deck. The photo looked like a MXD-D1 http://www.connact.com/~eaw/minidisc/part_Sony_MXD-D1.html But most interesting was the 4x claim. Thats right - it will "rip" tracks at 4x (depended on CD quality / errors) Anyone else know about this (or did I miss the discussion?) Never mind - surfing hte MD list(new location) yeilds http://www.europe.sony.com/forum/ifa99_20.html which is for the MXD-D3 model. Now - is this avail in the states and how much? It would make my mixes faster as I currently do CD to MD in real time with a mixer. With a 4x ripper I could do the MD "compilation" and then burn the CD from the MD (which is what I do now anyway). Oh - pro MD unit and Pro CDR stand alone means I dont worry about SCMS. And I *own* the source material (its for DJ work). EWong EWong, Sony is set to release the MXD-D1 4X unit here in the states in the fall (October-November) time frame. I work for Sony and we received the info on this piece awhile ago. It does indeed do UP TO 4X dubbing depending on the CD itself with no loss. It is a killer unit and it will retail for $399. Using references to hip-hop, guns and drugs to drive his points home, Ali's interviews with a series of establishment figures - everyone from the director of the Royal Nation Opera to the leading protagonists in the debate over Northern Islands future - have created one of the fastest growing comedy cults since Alan Partridge made his radio debut." Re: MD: Hoax: 9999999 (was: Y2K compliance Hoax)
When I wrote code back in the 60's and 70's using FORTRAN, we would read the data, then check for 99 and if that apeared, we interpreted it as End Of File and the program then processed the apropriate code to stop reading the data and do the calculations and print the report. When you read a record with FORTRAN, the read statement tells what the numbers mean by the position of the numbers. I doubt that any of that code still is running except on the ancient machines we still have at work, a Buroughs B 1900 and Control Data 1700 series mainframes. They run FORTRAN and COBOL, I will let you know if they crash tomorrow. :) Alexander Dietrich wrote: Could you explain that ? Re: MD: Bad recording with binaural mics. Help???
You don't give the whole picture. What you are discribing tells me that you have the record level set too high and the sound is clipping when it gets too loud. If you have a Sony, change the mike sensitivity to low instead of high, and press END SEARCH. If you have a Sharp or other brand, reduce the record level and be sure to watch to see if you are hitting the peaks too often. When you over drive the input and the VU meter show it is over the limit, it will sound bad. rbetcher wrote: Hi, If anyone has experience with recording live show with Core's cheap binaural's I am looking for some help. You could be overloading the mic input stage - no amount of level setting will correct this as the level control comes after the mic input stages. I'm not sure that even setting any mic sensitivity switch will fix it - you might need to attenuate the mic output GB - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: recording safety?
Is it safe to leave a unit in 'record mode' for any amount of time? I am using a Sharp 722 to record a bunch of MP3s with different volumes, and I need to press record to hear the output through the MD headphones. Is the record head burning a groove in my disks or is this harmless? advTHANXance ~S~ - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You don't seem to understand that these threads go on for a very long time (a lot longer than they need to be, so much so that people actually ask for the thread to end!), are not productive by any means and is repetitious. Let's face it, it's déjà vu, only more annoying. So I strongly suggest that you deal with the facts. From: Tony Antoniou You don't seem to understand that these threads go on for a very long time are not productive by any means and is repetitious. Not at all correct. I've seen many many threads like this over the years. What I've observed is that they all eventually die out and that complaining about them has no effect whatsoever ... unless you're the moderator. All it does is add even worse noise because it's got nothing at all to do with the area's topic. Even worse, calling for the end of a topical thread with an non-topical message is questionable at best. I've also learned that the subject is an ideal way to avoid topics you don't like. Unless your mailreader doesn't allow it (and I haven't seen one like that), messages can be deleted without reading them. MD: personal update (totally MD related!!!)
hi all! it's been awhile since i've posted so i thought i'd update... i'm a professional dj and i use MD 95% of the time @ work and at home/car it's MD all the way(except for the am traffic reports) i've had the Denon DN-M2300R for two weeks now and it rocks! http://st4.yahoo.com/djtools/dendndualmin.html (great price/service!) she's rackmounted vertically in a calzone case which i prop up on two milk crates and it's just the right level - i'm 5'11" btw i definately need to go to radio shack tomorrow and pick up one of those mini-fans to cool it down.it does get quite hot!! as for the syncro-dubbing feature it's quite handy as i do program music for several bars in NYC - pop it in and walk away!! for you dj's the hot start feature as well as the pitch/bend functions are key for the club enviroment!! i used to be able to catch the beats w/ the je-500's but the denon is kill! (sorry about the excitement!) the editing features are pretty much laid out, i'm still getting used to it's many functions (you can undo the last two edits!) i've worked w/ denon equipment in the past and they're NOTORIOUS for breaking down (but in a club enviroment w/ many dj's who don't care..?) so i'm going to look into extending my warranty - just in case! as for my other equipment... sony mz-r3: plays fine but won't record/edit (utoc error - zaps disc!) sharp 702: dropped once same deal as the sonyyou edit - you zap! aiwa am-f70(minidisco import): another zapper but love the display!! (hey, who needs to edit while they drive anyway?) sony mds-jb920 - groovy, except for the occasional disc error bug sony mds-je500(2) - both f/u recorders, but playback functions work sony mds-je510 - works great except one channel(r) cuts out... that's all for now! patrick (who wishes he had a working portable to record the lenny kravitz show he saw at madison square garden tonite!!) - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
