So you remember the story a while back where I went to ER because it

felt like I had skipped heart beats, tightness in the chest etc. That
prompted a referral to cardiologist. They put me on a monitor for a couple
of days that I wore around, which found noting. Of course all of this led
me to cutting carbs to lose weight. So anyway they then set me up for a
stress test which I did last week. Today was my follow up. It came up
positive. There was some irregularity which long story short, I have any
appointment next week for a cath, or whatever they call it. The will see if
they find any blockage and fix it if they do. This is just great. I am way
too young to be having these sorts of problems.

That sounds like hemp a century ago. Someone said it was 30-percent

fabric, etc. Then maryjane was the name applied to hemp and it became
illegal. Take away 30-percent of an economy sounds good for somebody,

Perhaps, you haven't tried. Low Carb is a good start.
Hopefully you do not believe baloney from anyone.
And how do we know your physician is not speaking baloney?
Your physician is like you - someone pays him, i.e. BigPharma, etc.
Your physician does like you do - you and your physician do what the
boss says or the paycheck does not arrive.
You are led to believe that ignoring it will end in tragedy for you
and R. Not necessarily.
Med-Industrial-Complex has us buffaloed to fear ignoring them. Try
ignoring them - you might like it. After all, you like DIY but the
dealers want you afraid of failure if you do not let them maintain the

My nephew-in-law's father died when he was 42. Stepdad went about five years
ago, and now his mom's dead too. Nephew in law's around 50-51 now and he's had
some heart trouble of his own.

Didn't Curt have stents put in before he was 40?

Uh, no. However, with diet and exercise a lot of ailments can be controlled
and/or reversed. If exercise was a prescription drug with a patent, it would
probably be quashed because it is too beneficial, or it would be the most
expensive drug on the planet, only available to the very wealthy and powerful.

Statins are a breach of the Hippocratic oath. They can be harmful and
offer no real benefit. The alleged "benefits" were derived by
manipulation. Studies NOT paid for by the drug pushers show NO benefit,
but lots of potential bad side effects.

It’s thru the groin they said. I have had a very poor diet all my

prescription ran out about 6 months ago and the dr would not refill it

Hopefully they will do the brachial one (through the wrist) rather than up the
femoral artery. Not fun, but at least you just have a small puncture wound in

They will put in any stents needed while they check you out -- there are
several conditions that can cause reduced blood flow to the heart muscle,
including tears in the artery wall that act just like deteriorated brake line
inner sections. Cured by stents.

If you have eaten large amounts of trans fats earlier in life you could also
have quite a bit of sludge in your arteries, again a stent will fix that along

Re: [MBZ] Carbs

2017-10-15 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
More on carbs:

Try to include more rye vs. wheat. My favorite is a rye or pumpernickel bread
made with 50% whole wheat and 50% rye (plus a bit of gluten added to make up
for the lack in the rye). When I make this bread I do it from freshly milled
flour I do at home. I have a good bread machine recipe if anyone is interested.

The carbohydrates in rye are mostly made up of pentose sugars (5 carbon
molecule) rather than glucose or fructose (6 carbon) . These metabolize more
slowly and also hydrate much more while going through the digestive system,
giving a feeling of fullness. Also, the pentose sugars happen to be important
building blocks of DNA and RNA.

Some people complain that this "binds them up".

Short summary, based on the research and experience of me and
my family. It does not fit what the medical industry
currently touts.

First - eliminate processed sugars. Cane sugar, corn syrup,
high fructose corn syrup, etc. will all mess up the bodies
ability to take care of itself, warp mineral balance and
distort appetite. I think it was Rich that said "sugar should
be classified as a drug". I agree.

Next try to eliminate all highly processed "food", like white
flour, white rice, etc. As much as possible, eat the entire
fruit/grain. Eat an orange rather than drink orange juice.
We have found that whole ground dates (chucks coated in oat
flour to keep it from becoming one big lump) works well as a
sweetener in a lot of baking. Avoid the "fake" sweeteners.
All the ones I've researched are nasty.

Quite likely, that will take care of a lot of divers stuff -
possibly even sleep issues. If that isn't enough to get your
weight where you want it, the next step is to separate the
eating of starch and fats/oils. THM (Trim Healthy Mama) has
popularized this technique. No need to count carbs, limit
service sizes, etc - just keep eat the starch and the
fats/oils at least 4 hours apart.

And drink water. It's really hard to drink too much.

Oh, and get sea salt with lots of trace minerals. Then use as
much as your tongue wants.

There will be a few weeks of sugar withdrawal, but after that it's
not hard - unless you try to eat food made someplace other than
your own kitchen. :)

Diet anything can't be good for you. Ice tea in large quantities is
why you've lost weight, it's just water you've let go as tea is a
dieuretic. Drink water, it's all you really need. Pack your own lunch,
fast food is loaded with salt and expensive. Ranch is just sugar...

If if won't spoil, it is NOT food! Locally grown fats are the best.
Find a local meat locker, dairy etc. BTW, store lard is plastic, don't
use it. Render your own or buy it from a locker that renders their own
and tells you it has to be refrigerated or frozen to keep a while. Try
to avoid meats grown with antibiotics, hormones, etc. Try to avoid
GMO: corn, soybean, canola, cotton seed oil, etc. Grape seed oil or a
few brands of olive oil are ok where you can't use butter or clean
animal fat.

I've seen studies that say you will gain weight drinking diet sodas. If
nothing else, they have zero redeeming nutritional value. Stick to tea -
that you brewed yourself. Pure tea from leaves, not the floor sweepings

There ARE other options to fast food (not really food). You can pack a
lunch, for instance. When we are traveling, we bring a bag of trail mix for
each of us. Homemade trail mix, not the sugar, salt, oil laden stuff from
the store.
Home made whole grain bread (ALL whole grain, no white flour) still has
carbs, but they release slowly and are much better for you.

We have a treadmill here at the house. I did run on it a few years ago and
worked myself up to about 30 minutes. Right now I bet I could not make it 5
minutes at a fairly brisk pace at an incline.

Well I hear you will fell like crap for a few days but after it passes you will
have more energy.

My problem is I'm on the go all day so I have to find things at fast food
places to eat. Yesterday it was Arby's classic with no but and just a touch of
Arby's sauce with a side salad. That was 11 carbs. Today it was a McDonald
quarter pounder with cheese with no bun or Catsup with a side salad. I can have
ranch but their ranch had 11 carbs as opposed to most other ranch that has 1-2.
So that meal ended up being 20 carbs. Dinner will be grilled chicken breast and
green beans with probably a hard boiled egg and maybe a couple is slices of
cheese. Should keep me under 30 which is well under my goal.

I have been sticking with unsweetened tea but am considering trying diet soda.
I have heard mixed reviews on it. Some say it's fine to drink with this sort of
diet, others say it can slow down things even though it has no calories or
carbs. I may try it and see how it goes. I do know several years ago I pretty
much cut out all sugar and drank diet soda and I lost weight just doing that.

Yes.

https://spinning.com

It’s a stationary bicycle with a heavy flywheel on which you control the
resistance. It’s done in groups with an instructor or team leader who gives
you direction on what you should be doing, for instance, standing, climbing a
hill, etc., usually done along with music so you’ve got a beat to follow. A
typical class lasts about 45 minutes including the warm up and cool down.

If you’re spinning regularly you’re using a heart rate monitor to check your
heart rate to have it at the optimum level.

You’ll burn about 400-600 calories in a class once you get acclimated and have
your heart rate established.

and so far today have had about 20 of my 69 I have allowed myself. Down 5 lbs
from yesterday. Of course I know there is daily fluctuations in weight anyway
but maybe we are headed in the right direction. From what I have read you tent
to shed a ton of water weight pretty quick when first starting then it evens
out.

Stereotypical pre heart attack symptoms, on activity I'd get chest pain
radiating down my left arm. Fortunately when I stopped the activity the pain
went away. Buncha tests didn't show anything, finally a cardiac cat scan showed
95% blockage in two arteries feeding my heart.
Just before the stents it had gotten bad, to avoid the pain I had to walk slow,
I couldn't walk and talk, etc...

Re: [MBZ] Carbs

2017-10-12 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Exercise and restrict carbs should work pretty well. Watch the fat calorie
intake, you don't want to over-do the calories -- eat lots of veggies and
salads with non sweetened dressings. Sugar, it turns out, causes all sorts of
problems, including coronary artery disease, high cholesterol, and diabetes
along with severe weight gain. Starch (which is all glucose) isn't as bad,
although you can overdose on that too. The problem is the fructose, which is
not normally found in large amounts in nature except in ripe fruit, which
digests slowly. High fructose corn syrup is the worst, by far, but white sugar
isn't good for you either.

There is no evidence that I know of that indicates people without coronary
artery disease benefit from statins, and certainly none that indicates statins
AND changes in diet and exercise reduce heart disease more than diet/exercise
changes alone. They do appear to help when there is evidence of coronary
artery disease and high LDL, but since there is, at least as far as I know at
the moment, no defined mechanism by which high LDL cholesterol CAUSES heart
disease, I'd not take them. Too many very serious side effects for no known
benefit. I believe, as does a goodly portion of the scientific community, that
coronary artery disease is an inflammation problem made worse by high
cholesterol. not caused by it. I suspect trans fats are a much worse problem.

My father died at 51 from a coronary infarct (heart attack) following
congestive heart failure from decades of high blood pressure in 1976. No
stents, no significant beta blockers, no high blood pressure meds, etc.
Terrible coronary artery disease, again probably from a lifetime of eating
trans fats. Mom fixed everything from natural sources (lard instead of Crisco,
for instance) and other than margarine when I lived at home, I've stayed away
from hydrogenated fats since I was an undergrad -- the Doctoral student in my
research lab was convinced that trans fats were poison as they cannot be
metabolized -- she was a lipid scientist, and I firmly believe she is right.

I had some severe congestive heart failure a couple years ago due to some kind
of viral infection, but have zero coronary artery disease, high but not
treatable triglyderides and cholesterol (unchanged from 1983) and BP that runs
around 150/90. According to my cardiologist, I should live forever.

Lose the 40 lbs, you will breathe MUCH better, feel much better, and sleep
better. I dropped 20 over the last couple years, and need to get serious about
getting another 20 or so off, it's mostly internal belly fat, the worst kind
and the stuff that interferes with breathing. Sadly, I lost most of mine when
I had a broken ankle in Dec, and was incapacitated for four weeks, had to
depend on my 93 year old mother to get meals during the day. She fed me a lot
less than I normally eat, it was a good thing. Now that my ankle will tolerate
normal activities, I need to get out and get moving, probably need to walk 30
min a day or so.

Re: [MBZ] Carbs

2017-10-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I think portion control is one of the major concerns when one is looking to
lose weight/eat healthy. A while ago I did the “cut everything in half and
only eat half” approach and it definitely had a positive effect on me. My
typical daily routine is a tall glass of “crappaccino” (Lots of milk with
espresso) for breakfast, a yogurt for lunch, and a good dinner.

I might swap that around for a good lunch and yogurt or something very light
for “dinner”.

Weight/health is a concern due to my job being relatively sedentary. I do get
up and walk every morning, lunch and afternoon for about 6-8 blocks each time
unless the weather is really lousy. I also take the stairs between floors when
possible.

I try to keep carbs down to a reasonable level. One way that works for me is to
think of veggies. An example is cauliflower rice. I get the big bag of this
fresh at Costco. I use this instead of rice for a stir fry. It has the texture
of rice and works well to absorb a sauce or gravy. I've lost about 35 lbs.
without going crazy just by cutting down on carbs and making sure I have a big
portion of veggies with dinner to fill me up. Exercise bike and walks help too.

So I have realized I am probably at least 40lbs overweight. Sunday night I
thought I might be having a heart attack so went to the er where everything
came back good. My blood pressure was way too high at about 180/80 when I came
in but was down to about 150/80. They did not seem concerned. So they sent me
to get monitor put on that I wore for the last 2 days. Did not really have any
problems so I don't except they will get anything off that. I think I may have
just had a panic attack or something. Thinking about being too fat, thinking
about a coworker who is my age who had a heart attack last year, and thinking
about how I am already probably at risk due to my father who has heart problems
and my grandfather had heart problems.  I also think it could have something to
do with the Cpap. Since I have started using it I seem to sometimes had a weird
feeling almost like a lung issue or just muscular soreness in my diaphragm.

I have high cholesterol and the dr had me on a statin which I am really not
sure about. I have not taken in for about 6 months because the refills ran out
and they won't refill them until I come can in. Earliest appointment is next
month, which I set several months ago.

So anyway I have decided to cut out all sugar and most cards, trying to stay
around 20 carbs a day but at least under 50. Maybe a sort of extreme keto or
whatever they call it diet. Anybody btdt?

Mao is correct. I did my due diligence and was not pleased with what I found.
Doctor concurred, but played it as a "which is worse" kind of scenario and
gladly accepted my willingness to take a healthier approach.

Unfortunately, I haven't kept up with spinning due to things beyond my control,

I was up to 200 when we bought our current house. Wife and I replaced the
floor and painted the whole thing (inside) before we moved in. I lost 20
lbs. just from that increased activity. I've since reduced the portions
that I eat, and have reduced the red meat (though not eliminated at all)
and increased veggies, fruits, and nuts. that plus walking 2 miles a day
(in 28 minutes) and I'm down to 172 this morning.
My blood pressure has been borderline high - I started drinking 3 - 5 cups
of hibiscus tea a day - brought it down between 5 and 10 points (depending
on the day). This was before the increased exercise).
The hibiscus is the pure stuff, not the crap in bags with all kinds of
other stuff: http://www.sfherb.com/Hibiscus-Flowers-Cut--1-Lb_p_13.html
My wife doesn't have blood pressure issues, but drinks a couple of cups a
day just because she likes it . . .

Eat anything you want, any time you want.. as long as you walk 5 miles to
eat it, and 5 miles back home..

You'll be good.

As a alternate to statins, try 100% Salmon Oil, Don't buy the fake stuff..
any decent health food place will have the "good stuff". 2,000 units per
day should get you sorted out. It has a cumulative effect, so take it every
day. One pill is 1,000 units.. so one in morn, one at evening. No side
effects.

Re: [MBZ] Carbs

2017-10-12 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
If you're not diabetic I wouldn't focus on carbs, focus on all calories but be
sure to keep sufficient protein in your diet. My Fitness Buddy app is what I
used, lost about 20 lbs over a year. I also added some easy exercise (walking)
which I do every day and twice on Sunday.

Starting and keeping to a diet is hard but the app tracks your weight and waist
measurement over time and charts them; watching the steady progress toward your
goal is motivating. Key is making changes to your life that are easy to do
forever, that won't become a chore that you are then going to be tempted to
avoid.

This "Dan" said "No" to statins ten years ago also. Some people do
well with statins but there is much out there that speaks against
statins, also.

Exactly a year ago for various reasons I decided to make some life changes
which included drinking much less alcohol (no problem with it, I just enjoy my
home brews, decent wines, and a nightcap of interesting grain-based products!)
and eating much less meat and a lot more veg, fish mostly when I eat meat, and
less carb. And an occasional dessert. I have vegan/vegetarian friends who ride
my ass too, and the farmstand is at the end of my driveway which makes it very
easy to get wonderful fresh veg any time.

It took a few weeks to get into a “new normal “ but I did and I don’t really
miss all that stuff much now. And if I do eat red meat or have more than a beer
or wine or two I don’t feel quite well. I still have some if I feel like it,
but I don’t feel like it that much. So my body has adapted to the “new normal “
and I kinda like it. I ride my bike when I can but not near as much as I want.
If I eat out I try to get stuff that is not meat, salt, fat , sugar etc.

Scale this morning shows -24lb from 202 in about 10 months, with no massive
crash effort, and my older clothes fit now! I actually feel better too, and I
think sleep better, and less than I used to. Oh, and the system flow is quite
regular and easy!

You might also want to get your thyroid checked, if low output you can gain
weight, low energy, poor sleep, etc. it’s easy to fix, one little pill a day.

Good luck! If you need help or reassurance or support feel free to reach out.

Re: [MBZ] Carbs

2017-10-12 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes

Internist tried putting me on statins about ten years ago. I told her "No".

I started working out by spinning (hard core stationary bike) four times a
week. My numbers dropped significantly, and I didn't change a thing when it
came to diet.

Your work situation doesn't lend itself to regularly scheduled workouts, but
maybe you can try walking or biking as often as possible?

[MBZ] Carbs

2017-10-12 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
