[newbie] still can't use usercfg!

1999-08-10 Thread brandon

I asked about why I can't use usercfg - it gives error message saying it
doesn't recognize the command.

someone suggestted I type in: rpm -i /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RMS/usercfg*

I tried that, it doesn't recognize this command either. What do I have
to do to get usercfg working?
If the command above is correct, WHAT SHOULD I HAVE DONE BEFORE TYPING
THAT COMMAND IN? Let me remind you that I am NEW to Linux. Please make
no assumptions.

Thanks,

brandon

You may try to reinstall your modem on COM2 or COM1 IRQ3 or IRQ4.
in Windows95.
Then, use ttys1(COM1) or ttys2(COM2) at kppp.

When you say "it doesn't recognize this command," what exactly _does_
it do? If it can't find the rpm command, IMO, that would be a Very Bad
Thing. Perhaps your path is messed up, but I'm not sure how that would
have happened. If it gives a different error, then of course the course
of action would change. That command looks correct to install any
package starting with usercfg.

When I tried to use..

I would get a message back from BASH saying something like..

"unknown command - unmount"

I tried as both user and SU, and could not get the CD to open... :-/

If I tried to click on the desktop icon, and right click to unmount..
it said "device is busy" or some such error.

What am I doing wrongas I eventually wound up rebooting and then

to get the extra resolution, you could try hitting CTRL-ALT-KEYPAD+ on your
keyboard. To get the extra colour depth, you'll have to pass an extra
parameter to the startx script:

startx -- -bpp 24

I'm sure there's a script switch that sets the resolution too but I'm not
familiar with it.

Bit busy at the moment - but do you have the linux mod's (drivers in Windows
terms) for the V3. The location to get them from is mentioned on 3DFXs web
site under Linux Drivers.

You should have 3 RPMs. Put them in their own directory and then do (as
root) an 'rpm -Uvh *rpm'

After that run (again as root) 'XF86Setup' - you might as well say no to
using your existing config as defaults as that's wrong anyway.

Although the standard SVGA server 'supports' the V3, you need the custom
server mentioned above to get it working properly (ie at a decent
resolution/color depth).

Do you have the installation manuals handy? If so, please read them. The
first partion you are going to boot from must be '/', ignoring the quotes.
All subsequent partitions are '/somename'.

Linux does not understand the drive-colon world of Mr. Gates. It uses
devices and partitions to do it's file management, i.e., your first hard
drive would be hda, its partitions would be hda1, hda2, etc.

It appears you're coming from the Windows world. May I suggest going to a
bookstore and getting any book on Linux you can find, just make sure it has
some material in it on installation and file system management.

Well, the reason you're not finding a program or package called usercfg is
because there ISN'T a package or program called usercfg. Someone else can
correct me if I'm wrong, but I just did a:
rpm -qlp /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/*rpm | grep usercfg

Brandon, perhaps you can tell us what you're trying to do and we can point you

It's for Mandrake upgrades.

upgrades? I normally run in Gnome but I wouldn't mind firing the

No need to switch window managers; the icon just points to a program called
MandrakeUpdate, which you can run just as easily by typing 'MandrakeUpdate' in
an xterm from any window manager.

It's really not much harder to just find a mirror site listed on Mandrake's
page and download all the updates from it, then install them with rpm -Uvh. Or
if you don't want to keep the rpm files on your HD, you can put the URL in the
rpm command, e.g.

rpm -Uvh ftp://some.mandrake.mirror/updates/blah-5mdk.rpm

Or you could replace the package name with '*rpm' to do every package in the
directory with a single command, but unless I had a really fast connection I'd
feel safer downloading first and then installing.

Does this do the kernal upgrades too? Once you have used the KDE

Yes.

updates icon with a kernal upgrade is there anything else you need to
 do?

I'm not SURE since I haven't upgraded a kernel with an RPM package (I did a
fresh install from an updated CDR), but I believe after installing the new
kernel package, you would need to edit /etc/lilo.conf so that it points to the
new kernel, then run lilo to write the new lilo configuration to the MBR.

get errors that say "modem is busy". I have tried all the possible devices
(/dev/ttyS0, S1, S2, .) to see if that would work. I tried changing the
IRQ (setserial /dev/ttyS2 IRQ :1, 2, 3, and so on..) and Still nothing.

I was using Mandrake 5.3 for the past few months on this same machine until
last night without a problem. All I did was put the CD in and installed.
The modem worked on the first try. And Windows 98 has no problem too.

This is not an upgrade that I did. I slicked the partition and installed
Mandrake 6.0 from scratch. I don't see a whole lot of troubleshooting
documentation about this problem (online or offline). Can anyone point me
in the right direction? What do I do?

I just installed Madrake 6.0, running KDE, I used kdeppp and tried to
setup my modem, which is a U.S. Robotics 56k Internal Fax Modem, on COM3,

Does anyone know what settings I should use for the modem? Or if I have

I had this happen once. If you made the custom boot disk when it
prompted you, try booting with it, and then running 'lilo' at the prompt
after you log in. Depending on the results you get from that, you may
have to edit '/etc/lilo.conf' to get it working.

Now tho when I try to "mount" the floppy..

You'd use -t ext2 for a Linux filesystem and -t vfat for a DOS/Windows
filesystem, or if you use -t auto the mount command will figure it out on its
own. e.g.

mount -t ext2 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

On 10-Aug-99 Alan Schussman wrote:
I sent this a couple of days ago, but never saw it show up on the list.
Perhaps it got burped out somewhere.

On my new PC, mandrake 6.0 has worked really well -- even kppp is working
flawlessly! But when I tried to compile some downloaded software the other
day, I hit a wall of errors. First, make was missing, and I had to install
it from an RPM. The second error I'm now getting is that all the .h files
that I expected were standard (stdio.h, string.h, math.h, etc) are also
missing. I can't find them anywhere. After installing gcc and all the
libraries I came across on the RPM CD, they're still nowhere to be found.

I'm inclined to think that since make was originally missing, I must have
mistakenly not installed some things when I made the initial installation.
Any suggestions for ensuring that I have all the proper packages
 installed to fix this one?

Most of the packages you need for compiling source code are grouped in the
'development' categories during install, which aren't selected by default
during a Custom install. Make sure to select those next time you do an install.

Aside from make and pgcc (and pgcc-c++), some other packages you may need are:

glibc-devel -- for C programs (this is what has those .h files)
libstdc++-devel -- like glibc-devel, but for C++ programs
XFree86-devel -- for X-based programs
gtk+-devel -- for programs that use gtk+
qt-devel-- for programs that use qt

That's not an exhaustive list, just the ones that come to my mind off the top
of my head... should be enough for most programs though. If you need any more,
you should be able to figure out what you need by browsing through the RPMS
directory on your CD.

[newbie] [newboe] Parallel Port Zip Drive

1999-08-10 Thread Manny Styles

I recently upgraded my system to 6.0 (again) from 5.3, and my zip drive is
no longer recognized ... not even during the install. In 5.3, it was
recognized as a SCSI device during install, and as /dev/sda4 after
installation. The 6.0 installation could not recognize the drive, and when
I try to mount it, I get the following error:

# mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/sda4 as a block device
(maybe `insmod driver'?)

I use /mnt/zip as the mounting point. Does anyone know how I can get the
zip drive recognized again?

[newbie] kppp and procmail

1999-08-10 Thread James Stewart

Not having been able to resolve my problems with fetchmail and sendmail
I'm now trying to use procmail as my mta rather than sendmail.

I'm connecting using kppp to an isp which allocates dynamic IP addresses.
I have my ISP's two nameservers entered in my kppp set-up, but have
deselected the "disable local nameservers" option.

My /etc/resolv.conf file normally says "search localdomain"
My /etc/hosts file contains the line:

"127.0.0.1 britlinks.co.uk www.britlinks.co.uk britlinks localhost"

If my /etc/procmailrc file says:

0:
*^X-SMTP-Envelope: *.lists@
!james@localhost

for some reason the address is expanded to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and sent
to the mail queue where it is sent out of the machine by sendmail.

If I change it to say something like:

0:
*^X-SMTP-Envelope: *.lists@
/var/spool/mail/james

then that is delivered okay, providing I'm logged in as james. If I
deliver it to another user's mailbox, the mail arrives in the box, but
neither pine nor mail list it in their index of that mailbox.

Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong which is causing the
forwarding to go straight out of the machine?

Cheers. James.

Switch the two sections in /etc/lilo.conf. Here's my normal setup:

other=/dev/hda1

whichever one is listed first will be your default. So, to make Windows
the default switch them to this:

other=/dev/hda1
label=win98
table=/dev/hda
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.5-22
label=linux
root=/dev/hda3
read-only

After making that change, run this:

/sbin/lilo

that will write the changes back out to the drive so they'll take effect
on the next boot.

OK folks:

I've heard the stories of the greatness of Linux so I bought it. It's
completely Greek to me.

It's so Greek I don't know where to begin with the installation. I have
2 hard drives: 1) my primary C drive which has Windows 98 on it and not
enough room to partition it and install Linux as well and 2) a new HD I
bought yesterday just for my new happy Linux system.

I am getting the impression I have to install Linux on my primary drive.
Is this true? Can I just install it on my new 17.6 Gig hard drive which
I have already partitioned into 2 equal sizes? If I can install on my
new drive can I skip using the fips crap and just do a normal install?
Then how do I set up the boot manager to ask me which OS I'd like to use
at startup?

Sorry for all the questions but that's what we're here for right?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I haven't heard of usercfg until your message. As for adding a user, you
type:

#adduser "newusername" (no quotes)
#passwd "newusername"

After typing the second command, it will ask you to enter the new password
twice to confirm it.
Log out, then log in with the new user, and you should have access to the
common programs (things that won't hurt your system if you mess up.)

It is getting better but don't wait for a

primarily for people who

 a) don't like funnelling more billions into some commercial

 b) are tired of somebody else's idea of what they think they
might want out of system and who want to exercise some, if

control over their computing environment.

All that said, don't let this scare you away from Linux. Be aware, however,
that it is a get your hands dirty type of operating system if you really
want to realize its full power. If you are in any way shy about having to

300x240 or something. I couldn't even see the desktop.

Get the file, after install boot into runlevel 3.

( When it says Lilo boot: )

  typelinux 3

This will give you command line. Login as root, find the file. Install.
  Shutdown. Reboot.
  Walla.

Re: [newbie] New Guy here. Where do I start?

1999-08-10 Thread Andy Goth

Already partitioned into two equal sizes? Why?

It's a long story but I wanted to make 3 partitions (2 of about 750 MB
so I can store files there and get them ready to burn to CDR), and then
the 3rd partition as just a separate drive. During the drive install my
mouse was disabled so i was unable to point it to the scroll bar where I
could increase the number of partitions or the sizes. So I was stuck
with 2 of equal size. Should I repartition it later with the Partition
 Magic?

Definitely repartition.

Where'd you get Partition Magic? I used disk druid.

The swap partition is for virtual memory. How much memory do you have?
I've heard that it's a good idea to make it 250% of how much physical
  RAM you have. Guys?

I have 160 MB RAM. So I should make a 400 MB partition?

NO.

That's waaay too much. If you feel like it, go up to 128MB.

Hey. Do you have SCSI drives?

U, I dunno. I just opened up my computer and stuck it in and it
works. :-) I guess it says EIDE on the box.

Okay.

So can you even run the installation program? If you can get your BIOS
to boot from a CD, then simply set it to do that, insert the CD, and
reboot. If not, you can use rawrite (on the CD) to make an installation
floppy. Read the documentation if you can.

I haven't tried the install yet because I wasn't sure where to the
install. I want to put it on my new drive but it looked like it HAD to
be on the primary master drive and not the primary slave.

I have Linux on my slave. It's no problem. The slave is /dev/hdb.

So, I need to install the boot manager or LILO on the original C drive
and then just tell it where Linux is on the D: drive right?

Install LILO to /dev/hda. It's not the D: drive. That's just DOS's
name for it. It's /dev/hdb1. That means the first primary partition on
the slave disk. Understand?

Re: [newbie] Honest opinions on Linux

1999-08-10 Thread Andy Goth

It seems the Linux OS is very complex so far.

And what are you basing this on?

 What is the true advantage
to running this OS rather than a Windows 98 system?

Linux is far more stable, and you have the source code. It appears to
be better supported, too. Does Microsoft have mailing lists that give
out competent answers to Windows newbies? I've never heard of one.

 Believe me I hate
Bill Gates and will be happy when he folds - that is why I am switching
to Linux - but is there really an advantage at this point in the game or
should people wait another few years until the hard parts have been made
easy for the common man with GUI's and such?

There already are GUIs and such. KDE is good, and Gnome looks nice.
