- con Mandrake, da DOS non vedo il CD ROM, quindi niente da fare;
- con CAldera, sembra partire tutto, ma poi l'istallazione mi si ferma dopo la prima

[newbie] video resolution

1999-12-29 Thread Greg and Crissy

Hello!

I just installed Linux 6.5
OS on my PC. I had problems configuring my video card and monitor.
The entire desktop is off centered by about 1 inch, and at the default
resolution. Do I have to make this adjustment through my monitor to center
the desktop ? And also how do I adjust the resolution ? I configured
it through Xconfigurator to display many different res. rates but am unable to
locate any menu's to adjust it ???

Any help would be greatly
appreciated!

Thanks,

Sounds like a known bug. There is a conflict between the kcmclock and kdelibs
packages. To work around this problem, remove the kcmclock package, then
re-install the kdelibs package. You can use either the command line rpm
utility, or kpackage in the KDE desktop to complete this task.

IIRC the command to remove kcmclock would be

rpm -e kcmclock

rpm -Uvh /CD-mount-folder/Mandrake/RPMS/kdelibs-version-numbermdk.i586.rpm

Not quite that simple. You have to tell Linux where to mount any new
partition(s) on the filesystem. Simply create a new folder using the name of
your choice, perhaps "storage" (No Quotes). Then mount the partition with the
mount command as "mount -t ext2 /storage" (No Quotes). You can set up the mount
in fstab if you wish, or you can use linuxconf to do the fstab edit.

If you want to use the new partition(s) for existing elements of the
filesystem, then you have to mount the new partition on a temporary folder,
copy any existing data or files to the new partition from the intended
filesystem branch, unmount the new partition, delete the original data and
folder(s) (not the top level folder which will still be used as the mount point
for the new partition), then re-mount the new partition(s) using the permanent
mount points you just cleaned out. Now you can use linuxconf to set up the
mounts at startup, and all should be well. Note: Be very carefull to duplicate
any original file/folder structure onto the new partition if the chosen mount
point is an existing branch of the filesystem.

rpm is the RedHat Package Manager and it is included with Mandrake. To
learn
about rpm, read the rpm HOW-TO, or use "man rpm" from a command line (No
 Quotes).

I've been reading all I could get in teh HOW-TO sections for the last 3
months. It's been a struggle with this small monitor I have (my real 17"
monitor is in the shop under warranty repair).

 IIRC the command line is

 rpm -Uvh filename.rpm.

U=update package - installes or updates packages
v=verbose output - more detailed explanations
h=use 50 hash marks to indicate install/update progress

AH HAH!!! Somebody finally explained the switches. Thank you.thank you.
I couldn't find the syntax explained in anything I've read yet.

You need to have the CD-ROM mounted when you try to use rpm with the files
on
 the CD.

FYI, the folder on the CD should be

 /CD mount folder/Mandrake/RPMS/filename.rpm.

You will neen to include the path information so rpm can locate the file
to be
 installed.

Something else I've missed in all my reading or maybe I read it and haven't
gotten it pounded into my brain enough...just how do you know which is an
executable and which are accessory files to the executable? In dos/win there
is .exe, .dll, .txt etc. and it is easy to tell which does which.

I didn't catch your last sentence, but other than that, it sounds like
you're asking for reasons to use Mandrake. If you're happy with SuSE, then
don't! There should be only minor differences between the two, like setup
tools (Yast vs. linuxconf, for example).

Your problem with X11amp is probably due a bug in one of two things: the
kernel module for your soundcard, or X11amp. To fix it, try upgrading
your kernel and getting the latest version of XMMS (new name for X11amp).

[newbie] epson stylus color 800 and Mandrake 6.1

Hi,

Is anyone using an Epson Stylus Color 800 printer with Mandrake 6.1? I

printtool auto detected the printer on /dev/lp0. I can print ascii
files, but not postscript or other graphics files. I installed
ghostscript 5.50 by compiling the source. Everything seemed to go ok
there. The rpms were created and installed with 'rpm -Uvh' without
errors. But then when I try to print a postscript file, like the
postscript test file in printtool, all I see on the output page is

Unknown device: st800

What do I need to do to get this printer working? Thanks,

I am pretty new to all this, but have downloaded ZZplayer an mpeg player

Is this simply that C++ isn't installed?

Can someone tell me the difference between the 2.2.13-7mdk kernel and

I am asking because I cannot compile a driver for the smp kernel for my

I downloaded the latest driver from creatives ftp site. When I modify

Just wondering if anyone knew.

Re: [newbie] Root Password Problem

Hi Ron,

Well, for the moment I've got it set so shouldn't run out of space too soon.
While fixing this up and continuing to learn, my Windows 98 system crashed. I
logged off the net, went to bed and this morning, screen was in standby mode.
Not set for that is software or BIOS, and wound up with both FAT tables
corrupted. Fortunately, my emergency stuff worked, (this time anyway). LINUX
box is so stable that to get it to act similarly it has to run out of disk
space or I have to take a hammer to it. Now why Microsoft can't/ won't do the
same is almost criminal. (My opinion is they've discovered folks will purchase
something several times for minor fixes so they intentionally don't give us a
finished product right off.)

Well, anyway, I found some text on what you said about partitioning which went
contrary to what I had used originally. Guess the gurus knowledge depends on
the guru. (Actually I think the first thing I read was very old and drives up
to 1 Gb were considered extreme at that time.)

I'm going to have to exit this list and the expert one too and just go to the
archives. I'm getting a couple of hundred emails a day and simply can't keep
up. I hate that 'cuz I get so much good information not in the books and
manuals. Well, that's what the archives are for. But I will keep the group
address in my local address book.

/usr and /var even /home (if you hae users) will tend to grow faster than /

/usr holds the rpm database and most generaly (not in ALL cases) all

/var houses your logfiles (that grow and grow and grow (especialy if you
have loggng in your ipchains or firewall))
/home well thats a bit obvious, got users they got files and most users

The directories under root are pretty static in terms of size. I would

[newbie] xfm crashing after generating ttf fonts

1999-12-29 Thread Peter Heckert

Hi all,

I copied some ttf fonts from Windows to
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ttfonts

Then I did as root:

[root@hal1 ttfonts]# ttmkfdir -o fonts.scale
Then these messages appeared:
unknown font foundry code
unknown font foundry code FROG
unknown font foundry code SFT
I ignored them.

then I did: #mkfontdir

as i have read in the Font-Deuglification-Howto.
I also restarted xfs and X

Then X refused to start,it couldnt access the font server.
I got messages about broken Sockets, and xfs didnt run anymore.
I think xfs crashed.

Then I removed all added fonts and repeated the ttmkfdir and
mkfontdir commands.

I still got the above error messages "unknown font foundry code..."
and X wouldnt start.

Then I disabled the /ttfontdir directory in the configuration
file of xfs.
Now X starts again, and therefore I'm sure, there is an error with
my true type fonts.

Now I dont know how to proceed with this.
Maybe something is missing or wrong.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Peter

You might want to check the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

Re: [newbie] smp kernel 2.2.13-7mdk and modules

1999-12-29 Thread Hidong Kim

Hi, Gary,

Yes, I do have a dual Pentium II machine. smp was working fine when I
was running mandrake 5.3 kernel 2.2.9. I think much of my difficulties
here are due to my unfamiliarity with recompiling kernels from rpms. I
had always compiled kernels from tar.gz. On the mandrake 6.1
installation cd, there are several kernel rpms, like kernel,
kernel-source, kernel-headers, etc. Which of these packages are needed
for compiling an smp kernel? From the mandrake web site documentation,
it seems like kernel-source and kernel-headers are all that you need.
But then what about kernel-smp and kernel-smp-fb? I tried recompiling
an smp kernel with all of these packages installed, and still no success
getting a bootable smp 2.2.13-7mdk kernel. For all of the people at
mandrakesoft, is there a tar.gz of 2.2.13-7mdk? Right now, a tar.gz of
the 2.2.13-7mdk kernel source is more to be desired than gold by me.
Thanks,

Hidong

Re: [[newbie] Thanks for RAM help]

1999-12-29 Thread Payne Stanifer

To get Caldera, and every other Linux I assume, you add append = "mem=128M"
to you lilo.conf witch is probably in your /etc directory, then go to a
terminal window and typr /sbin/lilo , and finally reboot. If you already
have an append statement, just put a space between the last thin in quotes
and you mem=128M.

[newbie] x-server problem

1999-12-29 Thread chris wakefield

Hi all:
I'm arbitrarily out of linux for the moment. My Distro's mc or bash#
won't see my DOS partition. Has unformatted "empty space" on the drive
at the moment (maybe that's why?) Had to use windoze to download
xsis.tgz from suSE site to get my distro up and running. Can't get
xf86config (or XF86Setup for that matter) to set up my x-server. I think
the commands are:
#tar xzvf /dir/filename -C/usr/X11R6
The problem:
xsis.tgz is in DOS
tried:
#tar xzvf /DOS/xsis.tgz -C/usr/X11R6 and won't recognize DOS.
Any help would be appreaciated, Chris.

[newbie] [Fwd: [Fwd: Need help - install hangs/crashes on ASUS P3B-F based system]]

1999-12-29 Thread Morris Walton

Does anybody know what might be going on here?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have seen the installer keep running even when
there is register dump text in the 'background.' I still have not completed an
install, but I haven't tried the 'patches' either I'll work on doing that,
but I wonder how I will do it since my system is spanking new (how to apply the
patch?).

I have seen alot of postings on the asus newsgroup about ps2 and power
settings, but all of that was for windows I think. What thread(s) are you
looking at that describe our problem?

I was able to install windows98, but I don't want that on my disk. So, you and
I seem to reach the same conclusion that it is not faulty hardware.

I keep thinking it might have something to do with bios settings and/or linux
drivers for mobo. i am using the default settings.

I will have to investigate which patches I will need to get, since one extra
twist is that I am trying to install Mandrake 6.1, based off of red hat.

Thanks again for the reply. I'll keep you posted and hopefully likewise.

I finally got RH 6.1 installed last night but even then
it wasn't smooth sailing - for some reason a register
dump appeared on the screen while the text based
installer was installing the packages. It kind of messed
up the display but the install kept chugging along and
it actually appears to have completed successfully.
I can now boot Linux and it seems to work okay
but I'm not sure I trust it because of the register dump
that occurred during install. Time will tell.

I've seen LOTS of postings from people with the same
or similar problems as mine so I don't think that these
problems are specific to the ASUS P3B-F (at least
I hope not). Some people on the ASUS newsgroup
said they had problems with RH 6.1 and a PS/2
mouse so I switched to a serial mouse but it didn't
 help me.

I have Windows 98 and NT on this machine as well
so I know that the hardware is okay because both of
those OS's installed and run okay.

Note that there are some patches available from
RedHat which are supposed to fix several install
problems so you may want to try grabbing them
and see how it goes. I had tried them without any
success until I saw a posting from someone indicating
that you have to use the ones dated Nov. NOT Oct.
so I grabbed the Nov. ones and those are the ones
I used last night when I finally got it installed. I'm not sure
if that really was the answer or just a coincidence - the fact
that it worked may have been a pure fluke.

Good luck and let me know if you find out more.

I am experiencing something similar trying to
install Mandrake 6.1. I have an adaptec 2940-

a kernel panic, sometimes not. Keep me posted

Until then, I'm going to see if I can successfully install Windows. I
don't plan on keeping Windows on there, but it might help eliminate
faulty hardware as being the potential cause.

  Suggestions?

  Thanks,
