Subject: [newbie] Weird Networking Problem!!

  Hey everyone!

  OK, heres my weird story:

I have a home network, with windowz NT as a domain controller. I was
always able to get linux up and running on the network, using "linuxconf".
Well i had to re-install NT. This happened the day before my Mandrake 7
arrived in the mail. I get NT up and goin, and now I go to install Linux.
I
set up the network stuff, and low and behold, no network!! I cant even
ping
other computers, and they cant ping the linux box. So i figure, "Hey, it
must be Linux's fault", so i put redhat 6.1 on, and still get the same
problem.

This has me sooo confused!! Is Linux or NT the problem??

  Please help!!!

  Thanks alot in advance!

2000-03-17 Thread Rial Juan

$HOME and ~ are the same, it's the location of your homedir (in my
case: /home/nighty/). So copying XF86Config to ~ means to copy it into your
homedir.

However, what Jon suggests doesn't work. It only works for users with uid=0, in
other words: root. It does not work for regular users. So I guess you must find
another workaround, or work as root all the time. Working as root all the time
is highly discouraged for security reasons, but it's up to you.

But just out of curiosity: does the mouse work correct in a console? Perhaps you
have gpm using one type of mouse, and have defined another one for X. Don't know
if this can cause trouble or not, but it's not unlikely. You can manually edit
the mouseconfig in /etc/sysconfig/mouse, or fire up a linuxconf and set the
right mousetype in there. If you're not used to meddling with config files, go
with linuxconf. ;-)

[newbie] Basic Help

2000-03-17 Thread Ronald Brown

Hello Group,

In the install process, it asks the following
question.

What partition and directory on that partition
holds the Mandrake/RPMS and Mandrake/base directory?

If you remember from my post yesterday, all my
files are on my hard drive. Actually: C:\7.0
I have tried everything I could think of and there
is no docs on this part of the install. I guess I am just to old and used to a
Windows enviroment. If you can help, that would be great.

Thanks
Ron

2000-03-17 Thread Rial Juan

Sure it's possible, just use kde control center in your kde start-menu.

As for the second problem: remove them as root. If you can't do it from within
kde, then locate the themes in a console, and delete them from the command line.

Can anyone confirm that last bit, please? I didn't try removing the themes, so I
don't know if it won't break anything, although I doubt it. But best to make
sure.

Take a look at your Adapter (In my case Novell 2000
Adapter).
You are interested in IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default
Gateway, DHCP Enabled (yes or no), DNS Servers (at the top).

Okay, now open your browser and look for proxy info, if you
find any copy it down.
(Netscape is under edit, preferences,advanced,proxies,
Manual proxy configuration (on mine))
(In Internet Exploder I will not even try to suggest where
it might be, they change location like I change my sox)

Open your email client now and look for name of mail server
(Something like mail.home.net)
Open a command window again and ping the name they give,
write the name and number down!
example: ping mail
 reply from 192.168.0.50
  ping news
  reply from 192.168.0.51

If your mail server is named mail and not
mail.something.somethingelse then your provider has an ALIAS
on his DNS server and you either must use his DNS numbers or
manually put in the ip number for "mail" yourself. I
suggest you use his DNS numbers because they may change the
numbers for the alias "mail" and then your mail will stop
working. Reasons they might have to change number? Server
crash, load balancing, just because they can...

Same kinda thing goes for news.
Remember, if this alias exists it is not a real address. If
you go to another machine and try to get your mail you will
have to put the numbers in manually.

Ok, now that you have all this info boot up linux and put
all those settings into linuxconf.

If DHCP Enabled said yes then use it in linuxconf, probably
not a good idea to static your address if under Windoze it
was dynamic.

After close of linuxconf you should be able to ping your
mail and news servers by name. If not, try by number. If
you can ping by number but not by name then go back into
linuxconf and fix the DNS entries. If you can't by number
either then ping your "Default Gateway", Still no joy? Do
ifconfig and check numbers for card.

Open up netscape and input proxy server settings if any.

If you are going to use Netscape for mail and news you can
set up the servers now. If you want you can edit /etc/hosts
to make your own alias to mail and news.

192.168.0.50mailmail.home.net
192.168.0.51newsnews.home.net

Since Netscape will not let you remove the default of "news"
you might as well use it for your news servers name.

Hopefully this got it for you. You now know more then many
1st tier Tech Support people. (The ones YOU get to talk to)
Usually He/She has a database of common problems dealing
with M$ Windoze and very little knowledge of his/her own to
work with. If they are asked a question not in the database
they might call 2nd tier, who knows a little more, etc.

[newbie] ADSL and pptp and Linux (Mandrake)

2000-03-17 Thread decouxv

Hello,
I'm using Linux Mandrake (6.1 I believe) on a PC with an Ethernet card
to connect myself to the Internet using ADSL.
Up to 2 weeks ago, that worked fine. I used PAP identification and
everything was OK. Recently, the system changed from PAP to CHAP.
I updated the chap-secrets file, and now I can connect again to
the Internet (ifconfig says ppp0 is up, I can ping a machine), but
- I can't get even a local web page (local = on the ISP's server) to load
- I can't load more than 10 or 15 mails in my mailbox from the pop
server of the ISP : it looks as though some traffic comes from the
ISP and suddenly it's restricted and going down to zero.

Does anyone around have an idea as to what I might have misconfigured ?
Do I need a special configuration for HTTP access that I might have
had by default before, and that might have changed since then whithout
my noting it ?

Thanks if you can provide me with any help at all since I'm completely
deadlocked.
Cheers

write count to a global variable before you exit the loop

 Subject: [newbie] shell programming question

 Hi-

I am attempting to write a shell program for a school class that
uses finger to find users who have never logged on. It is a
 Bourne shell program, nothing fancy.

Here is the code. It is pretty short:

 #/bin/sh
 export count=0
 cat /etc/passwd | cut -d: -f1,5 | tr ":" " " | tr "," " " |
 while read userid username
 do
if finger $userid | grep "Never logged in." 1 /dev/null
   then
   echo "$userid ( $username ) has never logged on."
   count=`expr $count + 1`
   fi
 done

This program works. Only problem is that it is required to count
the number of users who have not logged on. The variable count
is exported so that the loop can use it. Of course the loop is
executed inside a subshell, so getting the new value out of the
 loop is...well...not obvious.

Can anyone tell me how to get the new value of the variable out
of the subshell and back to the original shell???

 TIA,
   Dan

Java(tm) Binary Kernel Support for Linux v1.02

--

Linux beats them ALL! While all other OS's are TALKING about direct
support of Java Binaries in the OS, Linux is doing it!

You can execute Java applications and Java Applets just like any
other program after you have done the following:

1) You MUST FIRST install the Java Developers Kit for Linux.
The Java on Linux HOWTO gives the details on getting
and
installing this. This HOWTO can be found at:

ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/Java-HOWTO

You should also set up a reasonable CLASSPATH
environment
variable to use Java applications that make use of any
nonstandard classes (not included in the same
directory
 as the application itself).

2) You have to compile BINFMT_MISC either as a module or into
the kernel (CONFIG_BINFMT_MISC) and set it up
properly.
If you choose to compile it as a module, you will have
to insert it manually with modprobe/insmod, as kerneld
can not easy be supported with binfmt_misc.
Read the file 'binfmt_misc.txt' in this directory to
know
 more about the configuration process.

3) Add the following configuration items to binfmt_misc
(you should really have read binfmt_misc.txt now):
 support for Java applications:

':Java:M::\xca\xfe\xba\xbe::/usr/local/java/bin/javawrapper:'
 support for Java Applets:

':Applet:E::html::/usr/local/java/bin/appletviewer:'
or the following, if you want to be more selective:

':Applet:M::!--applet::/usr/local/java/bin/appletviewer:'

Of cause you have to fix the path names, if you installed
the JDK
 at another place than /usr/local/java.

Note, that for the more selective applet support you have to
modify
existing html-files to contain !--applet-- in the
first line
('' has to be the first character!) to let this
work!

For the compiled Java programs you need a wrapper script
like the
following (this is because Java is broken in case of the
filename
handling), again fix the path names, both in the script and
in the
 above given configuration string:

== Cut here ===
#!/bin/bash
# /usr/local/java/bin/javawrapper - the wrapper for
binfmt_misc/java
CLASS=$1

# if classname is a link, we follow it (this could be done easier -
how?)
if [ -L $1 ] ; then
 CLASS=`ls --color=no -l $1 |
tr -s '\t ' ' ' | cut -d ' ' -f 11`
fi
CLASSN=`basename $CLASS .class`
CLASSP=`dirname $CLASS`

FOO=$PATH
PATH=$CLASSPATH
if [ -z `type -p -a $CLASSN.class` ] ; then
 # class is not in
CLASSPATH
 if [ -e
$CLASSP/$CLASSN.class ] ; then

# append dir of class to CLASSPATH

if [ -z ${CLASSPATH} ] ; then

export CLASSPATH=$CLASSP

else

export CLASSPATH=$CLASSP:$CLASSPATH

fi
 else

# uh! now we would have to create a symbolic link - really

# ugly, i.e. print a message that one has to change the setup

echo Hey! This is not a good setup to run $1 !

exit 1
 fi
fi
PATH=$FOO

shift
/usr/local/java/bin/java $CLASSN $@
== Cut here ===

Now simply chmod +x the .class and/or .html files you want to
execute.
To add a Java program to your path best put a symbolic link to the
main
.class file into /usr/bin (or another place you like) omitting the
.class
extension. The directory containing the original .class file will
be
added to your CLASSPATH during execution.

To test your new setup, enter in the following simple Java app, and
name
it HelloWorld.java:

class
HelloWorld {
public
static void main(String args[]) {
System.out.println(Hello
World!);
}
}

Now compile the application with:
javac
HelloWorld.java

Set the executable permissions of the binary file, with:
chmod 755
HelloWorld.class

And then execute it:
./HelloWorld.class

To execute Java Applets, simple chmod the *.html files to include
the execution bit, then just do
./Applet.html

The Roadrunner service that I am using (midsouth.rr.com) does not require
me to log-in except to check e-mail. The way it works is it verifies me by
the Mac address of the ethernet card that they supplied me. It is all done
via DHCP.
You don't need to run a proxy server which in Linux is IP masquerade
unless you are trying to connect two or more PC's to the internet.
Here is a link that will tell you more than you want to know about
setting up a cable modem and firewalls and IP Masquerading, etc. It also has

Yeah, tons of people. I wonder if someone's keeping a counter on this
topic... ;)

Solution is simple: see the append lines in /etc/lilo.conf? Edit them like this:

append = "mem=128M"

That should do the trick.

Before you want to do this, you might try booting linux this way at the lilo
prompt (just to make sure you don't screw things up if it don't work) :

linux mem=128M

Not sure if it needs quotes around the mem=128M part; don't think so.
If the system boots OK, then put the append line in /etc/lilo.conf

Okay,

I ran top to look at the processes. There really didn't seem to be any real
bottleneck. In terms of CPU usage, top itself and my terminal emulator used
up the most (not much). When I moved a window around, X jumped up to about
80%, but that is to be expected, I think. As for memory usage, X uses the
most, but only about 12%.

The memory statistics are strange, though. Of my 64 M of RAM, only 9212 K
of it is free, but I'm not running very much at all (besides the root
processes, like kwm, kdm, etc.). And although I have 72 M of swap space,
none of it is being used at all! All of the swap space is free. Is this
normal?

Thanks,

Try this command in a terminal/console: top

It lists all running processes. Use shift-P to sort on CPU-usage, and
shift-M to
sort on memory usage. Also have a look at the main cpu/mem statistics at
that
come before the list; this will help you figure out where the bottleneck
lies.

Oh yeah, pressing q exits top. See the man-page for more details.

are extremely limited. In 6.1 they run many more services.

And I'm pretty sure you have to stop the service before ejecting the card.

The install hangs when it comes to the partitioning sectiona nd says that

partition with nothing on it. Is there a certain format the partition
should be in for the install to recognize it??

I even looked at the commercial driver... I don't exactly remember the
details but I remembered it being a better choice to get the
new card. I spent around $50 for an AGP card with 16MegRam and it was
good the first attempt. I'm guessing that you have 8Mb on
yours. So that's a bit of an upgrade. Goodluck.

Yes, thanks...I'd love to see anything that might help. I'm at a loss as
to
what to do next, and Mandrake tech support doesn't have much to say about
 it...

When will a new version of Xfree86 be out? Will support be in a full
release, or in one of the smaller pre-releases?

Also, does anyone know anything about the commercial driver I heard
mentioned? I'm wondering if that might be a better option than buying a
new
 video card.

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone - I appreciate it.

Ron,

From what you are saying it looks to me you have used 'Lnx4Win' to
install. If so then I would suggest you remove that setup and go with
the 'lilo', it is much faster. If Ole' Windows crashes on you 'Linux'
will be lost and require a reinstall. What Lnx4Win does is creates your
Linux Part in a Windows Dir from what I have understood and that is NOT
GOOD.

I am going to assume you have a minimal Win95/98 that you are using now . OK
then look for a utility called Ranish Partition Manager to donwload (free)
defrag your drive, and to simplify things create a 120mb swap and an
/partition into which mandrake will sort itself out, like many you will
probably rearrange everything several times as you learn more!!

[newbie] Mandrake 7.0 - Installation screams 'error not enough space in partition /

2000-03-17 Thread kiriakos

Hello all,

I just got a Mandrake 7.0 distribution from a computer magazine. It all
goes well up to the point that it asks me for the packages I want to
install.

I had the disk auto-allocated, which gives me around 1409 Megs for the /
partition. I chose "expert" installation (I'm not an expert, just a
freak, hehe) and development type. After that point, the installation
gives me an error saying more or less that the packages I chose are 1180
Megs in size and there's no space for all of them (like 1180 1409?)
but I could go on anyway, just I won't get all packages installed. I OK
this, to go on, and then I get a menu of package choices (Server,
Development, Games, etc.) I choose the absolute minimum, which is 1180
Megs, and when I OK this too, I get an error that the .rpms could not be
installed because of no space in / partition.

This is weird cause I restarted after I partitioned, so there shouldn't
be a problem for the installation to see the allocated space.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

It is 7.0, but do you know for sure that this bug has been fixed in
7.0-2? Because I would like to have 7.0 running and upgrade it from
there. Or else I'd have to download the update I guess, and I don't know
what I should do in that case. I mean, where do I find and where do I
save the update, since my medium is a CD.

And (attn: guy named root) how do I list a partition empty? I would

Yes it's probably bad

RTFM for details, but here's the jist of it: there's a program called
rawrite on the cd and an image file of a boot disk. I know for a facrt
there's at least a readme if you casnt find the manual.

Funny story when I bought 6.0: The packing list said there was supposed
to be a boot disk, and I didn't get one. It was shoortly before the
store closed so I rushed back to exchange it. I decided to make sure
the next one I grabbed had the disk with it...none in the stock did, and
I _really_ pissed off best buy security while checking every one. I
then decided to take one home anyway figuring I could find a way to
install. I felt mighty stupid after I saw the boot disk image! On
second thought, I think this was redhat 5.0 because I had windows on
that computer for a short time before I got redhat 5.0.

(the only reason I had windows on it was because it was on it when it
got passed down to me, and the only linux I had was an archaic one on my
486 with no install disks. Other than that Ive been M$ free since
93/94, until I recently installed vmware) Once you start using linux
it's hard to go back to windows! I aways have this small partition free
where I plan on installing windows but never get around to it...

Ok, to keep this on topic, I'm thinking about adding a graphic to my

do this as well?

I'm going to be playing around with this, if anyone has some hints
please post. If I figure it out I will post how here. Or, better yet,
is it possible to make my console login prompt a graphic? (no, not PC

GGthere is a link on the mandrake website that has all of
the updated .img files from the 7.0-2 release. If you make a
floppy boot disc from one of these .img files and boot the
system from it instead of from the 7.0 cd itself, then the
install will proceed as if you had used the 7.0-2 cd.

What, you don't want to use only 14% of the drive? Neither would I...

Did it come with software (labelled as being for DOS) such as OnTrack?
You do need this and you MAY be able to get it to work with linux.

If your BIOS only supports a 2 gig drive you are SOL unless you have
such a program. I've set up 2 antique computers over the years using
larger than supported hard drives AND linux. And was successful at it
too, although ripped my hair out at times. I might be able to give you
some hints if you have such software. (Hope it's Ontrack, but I never
owned a Fujitsu)

It can be tricky, I'm warning you now.

Perhaps the problem is with the name server? If your site must
use a non-root name server, you will need to set the$SOCKS_NS environment

necessary to set this variable, or the SOCKS host preference, to the ip address
