Jim, I've had similar problems with mine. What I found is that if you use
the
cd player to eject your music cd, then; the cd works fine or if it doesn't;
just
keep the cd player on screen and us it to eject the cd's. I know it's

That is pretty strange... have you tried the expert list? It would seem
that you aren't unmounting the drive, but if that's not the case then
I'm not sure what it would be. If it's been removed from the bios, that
would seem to be a loose connection or a bad drive. Have you checked to
make sure that all your wires are connected correctly? Could you
possibly need a bios update? Are you dual booting your machine? If so,
what's the drive look like under the other OS? Maybe try a different
drive in there (if you have a spare on hand).

Well, that's all I can think of off hand, Mike

[newbie] Mandrake 7.0 Install problems ThinkPad 760EL

2000-06-14 Thread R. D. McCallion

Hi all,

I've been trying to install Linux Mandrake 7.0 on my ThinkPad 760EL. The
CD and floppy drives are swappable and can not both be installed at the
same time. As a result I am unable to perform the standard CD install
using a boot floppy. I have tried several other methods, without any
success:

1. HDD install
- After partioning and xcopying all the files to the HDD, the
installer gives 'Error reading second stage RAM disk' and hangs.

2. Running the autoboot.bat from DOS
- Installer gets to 'Initializing CDROM', then hangs.

I have tried variations on the above using different disk images for a HDD
install (pcmcia.img and text_boot.img), in both cases the same Error
occurred.

The system is a P133 with 48 megs of RAM, a 2.1 GB IDE HDD, video
is a Trident TG9660 with 1 meg of memory.

I'd sure love to get this OS up and running, any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Ryan

|
|
|Hi --
|
|Received your message (obviously, I guess), and checked what you
|suggested. I think you're right, that the problem is with
|authentication, but I don't know how to check some of the things
|you suggest.
|
|1. How do I turn off my machine from trying to authenticate
|the ISP? I don't remember turning it off, but I also don't
|remember seeing a place where I COULD turn it off.

This is very easy to do, but not well documented.

under PPP options you type in "noauth" (no quotes) this tells PPP that it is
not to authorize the remote machine... I.E. you are logging into the remote,
but the remote does not have to log into your computer...

|2. Likewise, how do I get a routine/syc "in sync?" The signon
|(at least under windoze) doesn't use a script. (Does this
|mean the authentication is PAP and not CHAT?)

Yes, windows normally uses PAP.

Check your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0 file

'ABORT' 'BUSY'
'ABORT' 'ERROR'
'ABORT' 'NO CARRIER'
'ABORT' 'NO DIALTONE'
'ABORT' 'Invalid Login'
'ABORT' 'Login incorrect'
'' 'ATZ'
'OK' 'ATDTxx'
'CONNECT' ''
'TIMEOUT' '3'

Notice that in my case above I had to reduce the TIMEOUT value. The default
is WAY too high!

What happens is that by default PPP waits 15 seconds for the line to
"stabilize" before dealing with anything being sent by the remote. This
means that it may miss configuration and login PAP requests.

An even smaller timeout might be fine too!

Your best bet is to switch to another console screen... (ALT-F2) login and
type

"tail -f /var/log/messages"

Then switch back to the first screen, launch the dialer, and switch back to
the second screen.

You'll be able to see what is happening this way.

|3. How do I check for half duplex? I don't get double echoing
|to the terminal, so I don't think this is the problem, but at
|this point, I'll try anything!
|

Make sure that your modem INIT command includes a command that enables FULL
duplex. Your modem's default might be set up for HALF duplex... though this
occurs less and less now.

|Thanks for your help.

Re: [newbie] partition magic

2000-06-14 Thread Mike & Tracy Holt

First, with the low cost of drives nowadays, I would get another hard drive.
I'm not sure where you're at, but Hard Drives Northwest has WD 20GB drives
for $129 (www.hdnw.com). If you go that route, you can let windows have the
8 gig and put Linux on the 20! As far as deleting windows; as long as linux
isn't in an extended partition, you should just be able to use your windows
boot floppy and use fdisk to delete the windows partition then reinstall.
After you've done that, Partition magic works quite well for moving
partitions all over the place. From fdisk, just give the size of the
windows partition that you want to end up with, then leave the rest as free
space. When you start Part Magic, you can resize taking up the extra space.

Good luck, Mike
p.s. make sure, as always, back up anything you want to keep!

I'm not sure I understand this. If nothing else, I've installed and
re-installed linux dozens of times w/o problem. You should be able to
initialize your existing linux partitions and go full steam ahead. Are you
selecting "Install" not "Upgrade"? Perhaps have a go at "expert" It doesn't
get much easier than LM, so I'm puzzled. If you had it installed before, I
doubt you have a 1024 limit prob., besides this would only prevent you from
booting your installed system. Perhaps a little more info? Hope I'm not
off-base, I will add that I have installed LM the least amount of times, but
most installs are close to the same.

Yes. You can set up fetchmail to run as a cron job, which will fetch your mail
at a specified interval (which is nice if you telnet into your machine from a
remote location to check your mail).

If you just want to check in when you're logged in locally under X there are
numerous ways to do it. KDE has an applet, but I forget what its called (I use
Gnome). Gnome has a mail check applet that you can add to your taskbar. You can
also run gkrellm (a very nice system monitor) to fetch it for you too.

I have mine set up as a cron job. Create a .fetchmailrc in your normal user's
home directory that will fetch mail from all your accounts, then set up a cron
job to run as that user at a specifed interval. I get lots of mail so my
interval is 4 minutes. Works great...

[expert] 7.1 bug: FTP download mystery -- Solved!

2000-06-14 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Civilme and friends:

I heard today from a member of Mandrakesoft's staff. It was indeed a bug
in the FTP download. It has been fixed and will soon be operational in
all the mirror sites.

Subject: Re: [Notice] 7.1 -- 2-CD download mystery -- How is it done?
Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 15:14:03 +0200 (CEST)
From: Jean-loup Gailly <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: Benjamin Sher <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
References: 1

Benjamin wrote:

Thanks for your report.

Response from Jean-loup Gailly:

"On the ftp site, the directories RPMS and RPMS2 had been merged but
the file hdlists expected them to be separated. I have separated the
directories again. This should be soon reflected in the mirror sites."

Jean-loup Gailly

He further assured me that the FTP floppy download (using network.img)
will now automatically switch from the first CD (RPM) to the second CD
(RPM2) without a hitch. I would suggest waiting a day or so to be sure
that all mirrors are functioning properly.

Personally, I was quite disappointed with the 2-CD version I got from
LinuxLand. It was what I wanted, so I have no right to complain: 2-cd
7.1 burned from their FTP download. I had so many problems and anomalies
that I have decided that from on, no more FTP downloads (except for
individual files, where necessary). I have already ordered the OFFICIAL
Linux-Mandrake PowerPack 7.0 made by Mandrakesoft (not by Macmillain)
from LinuxMall, only $65 overnight delivery (6 CD plus 2 books). Worth
every penny. And when LM PowerPack 7.1 comes out in July, I'll get that
and every PowerPack upgrade in the future. No more anxiety, no more
pulling my hair out, no more wondering whether the FTP download was
really successful, plus 100 days of free email support. It's worth my
peace of mind. I'll have my 7.0 tomorrow morning, and this madness
should finally be over.

Well, I am glad I did help Mandrake troubleshoot the download bug. It
was a real one, and hopefully will help many others dowload their
Mandrake.

And thank you for going out of your way to help. In fact, it was you, I
believe, who diagnosed the "kpppload" problem. I would have never
guessed it. So, you share in the glory of exposing and correcting this
fatal FTP download bug.

I've asked Jean-loup to send a message to the Mandrake lists informing
them of this situation. I hope he does.

On Mandrake 7.1 i think its no Problem when you want to install the 1.6.1,
cause cscmail needs perl-GTK-gnome-07002. I have upgraded this package on
my 7.0 and now my rpmdrake does not corectly work. I tried cscmail now for
about 2 weeks, not with MySQL or Postgres, with the comma separated
format. It is a nice frontend, but very very slow. If you have a lot of
traffic don't use it.
Oh, for installing i used the installer sript from cscmail homepage.

Did you compile it yourself or did you try "rpm --rebuild pack.src.rpm"?

Maybe there is a BAD solution you could try :
make a symlink from /usr/include/xpm.h to /usr/X11R6/include/X11/xpm.h.
This is not nice, but there are chances that it works. But hopefully,
someone will have a better solution.

If you don't get any other answer here, you could also try the expert
mandrake mailing list.

I suppose you tried etherconfig and made sure it is active. Also try to see
if the routes are okay w/ ifconfig -a and get the BIOS right. If that
doesn't work, try and isadump and isapnp to set the thing right. Could be
poor PNP support for ISA card. Also make sure the driver is right.

Out of curiousity (not a flame please don't take it as one) why are you
posting problems that you're having with a Red Hat distro to a Mandrake
list? Yes, mandrake is based off of RedHat, but it's compiled for Pentium
machines (both causing new problems and alleviating RH problems) and
contains many newer versions of various packages than Red Hat does. Yes,
from the command line the two distros look almost the same. you get into
admin tools and mandrake is quite a bit different. You may have better luck
getting your various issues solved in a RedHat forum of some kind.

Good luck getting your problem fixed, if I know I'd help ya out.

Hi everyone. I've got this question that I just cannt figure out.

Is there a way of making the install not recognize that there was a
linux system on the disk? I've tried everything, fdisking a new partion,
re formatting. booting the boot floppy and trying to set the 'initrd'.

I'm at my wits end. I know it has something to do with the 1028

please please please someone help me.

Thanks,
I tried the longer path definition to no avail. I'll admit, I'm using
Redhat 6.0, not a Mandrake distro. There is no /usr/X386 directory.

The wine configure.in file has an entry that is clearly where configure
trips...

dnl *** Check for -lXpm
AC_CHECK_HEADERS(X11/xpm.h)
   [ dnl *** If X11/xpm.h exists...
  AC_CHECK_LIB(Xpm, XpmCreatePixmapFromData,
 [ AC_DEFINE(HAVE_LIBXXPM) X_PRE_LIBS="$X_PRE_LIBS -lXpm"],,
 $X_LIBS -lXext -lXpm -lX11 $X_EXTRA_LIBS
 )
],
and then the text of the error that prints when configure chokes on me.

It seems that $X_LIBS can't be found. How do I identify what the current
state is? Env offers no clue.

Use -I /usr/X11R6/include/X11. The -I path must contain the
full path where
the .h file exists. If the code says:

#include "xpm.h"

You need the path as specified above. If the code says

#include "X11/xpm.h"

/usr/X11R6/include should be enough. If I remember
correctly, all X11 stuff
is supposed to be stored in /usr/X386. In that case, it
*may* be posibble
for you to link like this:

ln -s /usr/X386/include/X11 /usr/X11R6/include

Maybe.

First, upgrade your version of libstdc++. Also, I would upgrade your

Use -I /usr/X11R6/include/X11. The -I path must contain the full path where
the .h file exists. If the code says:

#include "xpm.h"

You need the path as specified above. If the code says

#include "X11/xpm.h"

/usr/X11R6/include should be enough. If I remember correctly, all X11 stuff
is supposed to be stored in /usr/X386. In that case, it *may* be posibble
for you to link like this:

ln -s /usr/X386/include/X11 /usr/X11R6/include

Maybe.

Compiling source, was RE: [newbie] Make errors

2000-06-14 Thread Kaplan, Paul

N-
You seem quite knowledgeable about the rebuilding process so I will put to
you a question that I asked on one of the redhat lists and has yet to be
answered.

I am trying to re-compile a recent wine release from a src.rpm file. The
./configure script trips when it tries to find the file X11/xpm.h, insisting
that I should install xpm and xpm-devel packages, and then quits. The
packages xpm-3.4k-1 and xpm-devel-3.4k-1 are both installed on my system and
the file /usr/X11R6/inlcude/X11/xpm.h exists.

On someone else's suggestion, I tried to CFLAGS ="-I$CFLAGS
/usr/X11R6/include". Then ./configure returns:

checking whether the C compiler (gcc /usr/X11R6/include ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
create executables

I also tried to CFLAGS ="$CFLAGS /usr/X11R6/include"...(without the -I) and
ended up with the same response I initially had.

Any thoughts?

as with most things *nix, the answer is... it depends.

If you are looking for gtk I believe balsa is the current
lead contestant. Supposedly there is an Outlook
(multipurpose communications) knockoff called Evolution
that is on its way from the gnome folks. For now, you have
balsa, and maybe CSCmail

If it doesn't have to be gtk, just easy on the eyes,
mahogany isn't too bad. I had some issues w/ it not
wanting to work for me. YMMV.

Or, you could used mutt in an Eterm. That way you have
mutt's capabilities (pretty much top shelf) w/ clickable
menu's.

Me, I'm going to grit my teeth and use pine (gritting my
teeth because of the lack of threading) and wait and hope
and pray for XPine to get to a more usable state.

It's not the RPM package that's experiencing a problem. Rather it's
likely that you're missing a library or some other resource that the
system is looking for to complete the task that you've assigned it.

Thanks, but this is exactly what I have tried. I am using Mandrake 7.1 which
installs XFree86 3.3.6. The Trio3D and associated chip is marked as an
86C365 chip, but in my IBM 300PL the chip is marked as an 86C366. The Trio3D
driver does not work for this chip.

Re: [newbie] Make errors

2000-06-14 Thread Necrotica

This is a tricky question to answer, because it partially depends on what
you're trying to compile.

Most software cource that you download comes with a script called
configure that checks your system, makes sure you have all the
pre-requisites installed, etc. and creates special directive files to tell
the compiler how to compile the software on your machine. Does this
software have a scipt called configure in it, and did you run it by
typing: ./configure first?

There is something important that you should know before your continue
trying to compile whatever it is that you're trying to compile. Mandrake
is an RPM-based distribution. RPM stands for Redhat Packager Manager. Its
a system where you can download a .RPM file and easily install it by
selecting it from a utility like Kpackage within DrakConf. The nice thing
about it is that you can easily uninstall RPMs if you need to, whereas if
you compile straight source code it can sometimes be a big pain in the
rear to uninstall because files can easily get thrown all over the place
and they can be impossible to track down.

I like compiling my own software too, so I generally download SRPMs, which
are special RPMS that contain the source code. You can compile them by
typing rpm --rebuild --target i586 name.rpm. If there are dependencies
needed, it tells you. Once its built you can install the RPM as you
normally would.

If you are new to Linux, and it sounds like you are, I would strongly
suggest to either download a binary RPM of the software you are trying to
compiler, or downloaded the SRPM and compile it using the above
command. Trust me, it will make your life much easier and m ake it much
easier for you to maintain your system. If the software that you are
trying to compile does not come in RPM format, check
rpmfind.net/linux/mandrake/cooker/ and look in the cooker and contrib
directories to see if someone elese made an RPM for it already. The only
thing that I use that is not in RPM format is WIN, so chances are until
you become more familiar with the Linux environment you should be able to
find everything you need in RPM format.

My humble opinion.

[newbie] Support for Canon Printers...

2000-06-14 Thread mdw1982

Hello,

I'm a newbie to Linux Mandrake, although a seasoned intermediate user of Redhat Linux.
I was wondering if there is support in Linux Mandrake for a Canon BJC 6000. I noticed
that Mandrake supports the BJC 4000 and was hoping that it would also support the BJC
6000. I'm really looking to cut the ties that bind me to Windows Completley. I've got
better things to do than be ever more watchful for bad viruses that Windows is alergic
to.

Thanks in advance,

Try setting on the AOpen P128 card, I believe that is the right designation in the list.  That  is the card I have at home and Mandrake listed it although it did not find it on the install.  When I picked it from the list and use a 16bit color and 800x600 resolution everything works fine. The card is an S3 Trio3D/2X so maybe those settings will work for you.

Re: [newbie] XFree86 Setup Question

2000-06-14 Thread Victor Richardson

Don't feel bad, I have an IBM Netfinity 3000 with the same S3 Trio 3D chip. It
seems that the video card is only supported in VESA/Frame Buffer mode. It took
me six months of 3 am frustration, and umpteen support calls, and endless
postings (check the archives) to get that answer. Finally, last week an IBM tech
support guy sent me an internal memo on how to get the damn thing to work.

I suggest that you subsitute the XFree86-FBDev-3.3.x-x.i386.rpm in the
instructions with whatever version came with your distribution or download the
latest version available and RPM it from whatever directory it is stored.

Here is the exact section from IBM's support:

...Currently, no support exists other than VESA/Frame Buffer for the Accelerated
Graphics Port (AGP) video adapter included with the Netfinity 1000/3000 Server.

(although, this applies to all S3 Trio 3D video cards)***

Appendix B: Installing the VESA/Frame Buffer Server

1. With the system started in command mode, log in as root .
2. Mount the Red Hat Linux 6.1 C D and install the frame buffer server
package as follows:

# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
# cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS
# rpm -ivh XFree86-FBDev-3.3.5-3.i386.rpm

3. Save the current symbolic link by running # mv /etc/X11/X
/etc/X11/X.old .
4. Create a new symbolic link by running # ln -s
../../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_FBDev /etc/X11/X .
5. Edit /etc/lilo.conf to add a new entry for the frame buffer server by
copying the existing entry. Only add a vga=773 line after the image line and
change the label so that it is unique to other entries. The following is an
example of a SMP kernel entry with frame buffer server installed:
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-20smp
vga=773
label=linux-fb
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.12-20smp.img
read-only
root=/dev/sdxx
NOTE : Do not remove the existing entry. Do not make changes to the root
line in the new entry. The default line in /etc/lilo.conf contains the label
of the kernel loaded by default. If there is no default specified, then the
first
kernel entry in etc/lilo.conf is loaded by default. The digits 773 indicate
1024 x 768-pixel density with 8-bit color depth. For more information, see
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt (kernel-source-2.2.12-6.i386.rpm
package).
6. Update the master boot record and the LILO boot loader by running #
lilo -v .
7. Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config to create a new section entry for the frame buffer
server under Screen section. Copy the following example of a Screen entry
and make the necessary changes.
NOTE : and depends upon predefined strings in XF86Config.
Replace with the string following Identifier under Device in the Graphics
device section. Replace with the string following Identifier under Monitor
in the Monitor section.
Section "Screen"
Driver "fbdev"
Device ""
Monitor ""
Subsection "Display"
Modes "default"
EndSubsection
EndSection
8. Reboot the system and remove the media.
9. At the LILO boot prompt, press Tab for the kernel options or press Enter if
the new kernel was set as the default kernel.
10. After the system has restarted in command mode, issue the startx
command to enter the X Window system.

That should do it for you, although it is a little complex if you have never
done this before(like me). Please post this solution to the newsgroup for me,

I have Mandrake 7.1, latest version of Gnome (1.2) - my system is a P2

RE: [newbie] XFree86 Setup Question

2000-06-14 Thread Softec - Javier Matos

Hi Leo:

My video card is a S3 Trio 64 3D. With the help of a fellow of the foro I
configured the video mode.
(I use mandrake Air 7.02 and Xfree 3.3.6)

But not fully, here my explanation:

If I start the Gui with startx y can see the kde grafical user interface,
but if I start with kdm the screen became black.

Trying to introduce the user name and password with the screen blank, if
those are correct then I can see the kde. The same with gdm or xdm.

You could try this. Maybe is your case too.

I hope it works for you.
Good Luck.

I have an IBM 300PL, with integrated Trio3D chip on the motherboard. I
installed XFree86 3.3.6. I have tried the Trio3D, Trio3D/2X, and the 86C365
setting. All these settings don't work. The screen just goes black.
Sometimes I can recover by using ctl-alt-backspace, and other times the
machine is locked up.

The chip says 86C366 on it. There does not seem to be a listing in the
graphic cards for this chip.

Anyone have this working? Do you have an XF86Config file or the needed lines
in the config to make this work?

Thanks for any help

[newbie] XFree86 Setup Question

2000-06-14 Thread Leo Stutzmann

Re: [newbie] NFS Install

2000-06-14 Thread Randy

On my server I mounted my iso image using a loopback device: mount -o loop
.iso /mnt/.
Then I exported the directory containing this mountpoint. On my
Workstation (for testing the mount point) I mounted via NFS the server
export directory. I can access other files in the mounted directory so I
believe the mount is working. But I can't see the loopback mounted iso
image.

I tried the same thing with SMB and I am able to access the mounted iso
images. But I don't believe I can install from a SMB mounted directory.

My permissions remained the same for scd0, it seems to me a new device (sg0)
was linked after installing my sound card.

You can run gtoaster (or at least I was before installing a sound card) as a
user by:

1. add user to /etc/group by tagging the user name after the cdwriters group.
2. chgrp cdwriter /dev/scd0

Re: [newbie] Installation problem with 7.0

2000-06-14 Thread Charles A Edwards

To do a text install of 7.0 you will first need to make a boot floppy.
While running Windows insert your Mandrake install disk. Open it with My
Computer, open the dosutils folder, double click rawrite, this will open a
DOS window. For the image source file name enter
   D:\images\txt_boot.img
(Replace D with your CD-Rom drive letter)
Copy to A and follow the on screen instruction to complete.
Once the boot floppy is completed leave both it and the Mandrake install
CD insertted and restart your comuter.
Very important Enter your BIOS and change first boot device to floppy
instead of CD-ROM, save the settings and exit your BIOS,and allow your
computer to restart.
When the Mandrake boot screen comes up press enter for a normal install.
. You are now installing Linux Mandrake 7.0 in text mode.
   Good luck.

MUO has all kinds of tutorials and 'walk-thru's. This one
will show you what you need and howto extract, compile and install
most all source. There's also a section on .rpm's, but for a more
extensive tutorial try http://www.rpmdp.org/rpmbook/node1.html

On MUO's main page you can also download the whole site in one

RE: [newbie] Tar and .Gz

2000-06-14 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

You should ALWAYS see if the package exists in RPM format FIRST...

http://rpmfind.net

If not then try compiling.

Remember that if you are compiling a gz file, you'll need to have all the
libraries that the package was originally compiled against.

Often you'll also need the developement sources for the related libs and
packages as well.

The fact that your compiler is not working, indicates that you did not
perform a "developement" installation when prompted.

You'll have to go back and install the missing RPM's.

Given that everyone has to compile a program at sometime or another,
Developement should be the minimum install for Linux, in my book, in spite
of the requirements.

Programs don't always get put onto the KDE menu. Sometimes you're just going to
have to run it from the command line. Open up a terminal window (should be one
of the buttons down at the bottom taskbar) and then type in the program name
you want. For instance, if you installed xmms-1.0.1-10mdk.rpm, then you'd type
"xmms" (without the quotes) to run it.

Sadly, installing in Linux still isn't quite that easy in most situations. The
closest thing to a .exe is a .rpm. Read my explaination on .tar.gz's that I
wrote in another post for more information on how to install those things.

And lastly, I have several KDE themes I want to install in GZ

Never used Eudora, but one of the best on Linux is Kmail. There are some newer

RMPS package the application does not appear on my KDE menu. Do I have to
manually install it and if so, how?

---

Normally the answer is yes, you do have to install it manually. But there
are exceptions.

The new GNOME has a feature that can be exploited by the RPM package to
automatically add the appropriate entries in the menu without user
intervention.

Kapp-finder, the applet. Also searches for already installed programs that
it knows about, and adds them to your menu.

Some packages are also KDE aware, and you may find that after re-starting
KDE the entries will appear automatically.

You also might want to enable the Debian and Afterstep menus in KDE & Gnome
so that apps which add entries to those menus get automatically
incorporated.

---

How do you add your own?

Two ways... you can create an "Icon" using KDE and then drop it into the
menu.

You can also use the menu editor for either Gnome or KDE to add the
application.

Both the Gnome and KDE docs have instructions on both.

---

Where does the program get installed?

---

That depends upon the program itself, and how it was compiled originally.

Since most programs are dependant upon finding ancillary resources somewhere
else in the tree where they expect them to be, it is never a good idea to
put the programs elsewhere.

---

I saw nothing that led me to believe I could control where it gets
installed.

---

Using RPM no, it takes care of this for you. There ARE switches to override
the defaults, but this is not a good idea.

If you REALLY feel the need to change the install paths, you should use the
SOURCE RPM's and rebuild them. There are switches that enable alternate
paths for Libs, executables, etc. which you can specify during compilation.

The resulting re-compiled package installs into the new structure you
specify.

Also I am still receiving the error "Can only start executables on local
disks." I am confused by this message as well.

---

Sounds like you are trying to install or execute programs on NFS or other
mounted volumes (such as CD-ROM) but the mount point might not have execute
permission on it.

Normally this is a result of setting your security high.

When installing an application in TAR or GZ format, what file do I typically
look for to
install it?

---

With a TAR or GZ file, you are pretty much on your own.

TAR and GZ files for the most part ASSUME that you know what you are doing,
with exceptions. Most need re-compilation in order to run.

It's like getting a program like WinZip in source format. Now you have to
figure out what to do with it!

Since Mandrake never "finds out" about these applications you can create
many problems for yourself this way.

As a Newbie, your best bet is to use the RPM's. Worst case get the SOURCE
RPM's
which end in .SRC.RPM and you can tell RPM to "rebuild" or recompile them.

Often the latter cause RPM to create a new executable that depends upon what
you have on your system. If you've ever encountered a program that doesn't
seem to run because of a Library conflict, even though it installed,
rebuilding will often cure the problem.

---

(ie, install.exe or setup.exe in Windows, What's the equivalent
in Linux?)

Setup and install in windows are part of installation PACKAGES.

Though most programs have you execute a SETUP.EXE file, all that file does
is utilize Winblow's (let me say that again for you ANTI-MICROSOFT bashing
naysayers... WINBLOWS, WINBLOWS, WINBLOWS) native package installer.

Likewise Mandrake uses Redhat's excellent package installer called RPM.

Thus, grab the package you want... Learn to love http://rpmfind.net and
install it with

rpm -Uvh packagename.ver.i586.RPM

If you get an error, well you've probably grabbed a package that depends
upon other packages being present, which are not installed on your system.

The GNOME and KDE package Managers (DrakRPM is a variant of Gnome's) will
list the dependancies for you...

That said, there is a MUCH better way to do all of this...

Use GNOMERPM and point it to RPMFIND.NET in the configuration section. (THIS
MIGHT ALREADY BE THE DEFAULT...)

Now pay attention class...

GnomeRPM's WEB find feature MIGHT appear not to work... It DOES, you must be
connected to the internet before you start the program. Hit the WEB FIND
button and --WAIT---

After a while you'll be presented with a list of packages you can download
and install.

But it get's better. If you select a package GNOMERPM will DOWNLOAD all the
dependancies as well. You can have it grab and install everything in one
click.

It will also give you a nice description of what the package does, and other
data...

And lastly, I have several KDE themes I want to install in GZ
format. Where do I copy them in
