[newbie] hard drive CD ROM not found on bootup

2000-10-29 Thread nomad creaktop

Hi all

I hope you can help me ... When I boot up Linux-Mandrake 7.1 it naturally
looks for both my hard drive and CD ROM, but it can't find them, so it
starts Kudzo. (Which it also does when my external modem is switched off -
that's a real nuicance!) There it gives me the three options: remove driver
; keep driver ; do nothing. Whichever one I choose, It just dumps me at the
command line ( well, it looks like it but I can't execute any commands
except ctrlaltdel ) after saying that I should run e2fsck. But i
can't give any commands, so I have to reboot.
The windows partition still works fine (as good as windows can ) So I
really don't know what to do... please help, I'm going to order 7.2 through
cheapbytes (anyone know of a cheaper place? - once I saw 7.1 advertised as
$2), but I really want to get this working as I can't stand Windows anymore.

TIA...

After you unzip it, check to see if it contained a text file of

If it is source code, you may have to cd to the dir that you unzipped

Sure...but that's going to require, pretty much, a complete download

Re: [newbie] what [FAILED], What's a *.GZ

2000-10-29 Thread Greg Stewart

OK, usually, .gz files are also what are called "tarballs". If after the
gunzip, you are left with a *.tar file, you need to untar the file package.
Use: tar -xvf filename

Tar is a utility to package a folder or combination of files into a single
file. It does this withouth compression. gzip does the compression. You can
read about tar by typing: man tar (use ':q' to exit)

the tar utility will extract the files to a directory, usually called
something almost exactly like the name of the file. Whe you type ls it
should appear in blue, as a directory (white is a standard/non-executable
file, red is an rpm package, green is an executable file, light blue is a
link, etc...)

cd to the new directory and there should be one or both of README and
INSTALL. Use whichever text editor you like to view these (vi is always
present in an installation, although some don't like it--it's the only one
*I* use). Type: vi README, or vi INSTALL. use the arrow keys to navigate,
and the same colon-q (:q) to quit.

Follow the directions in the two files.

For the ppp problem, you may have configured the ISP information
incorrectly. In terminal, su to root (type su and enter root's
passwrod--of course I'm assuming you do the right thing and avoid logging in
as root all the time)

Type linuxconf and under networking|basic host information|ppp/slip/plip
enter all your information: phone # username, password (secret) DNS IP
addresses, etc. click quit|quit|activate changes, and you should be done.

Let me know what you had done previously to configure your ISP info, and
I'll be better prepared to tell you what is lacking or incorrect.

Um... if he/she can't log in, I'm not sure this will fly... :-)

At theboot: prompt (if you have used lilo as the boot loader) try the

You may also type:linux 1

If this logs you into a command line prompt, try typing:passwd root
if it asks you for the old password, you will need to re-install linux, and
make sure to remember your root password this time. If it simply asks for a
new password (which I don't expect it will) then just type the new password
and confirm it.

Linux is a secure OS, unlike windows (including NT) you MUST have 'root'
(administrator) account and a valid password for it. You should also create
user accounts as you should never log in as root unless you are making
system changes.

Re: [newbie] what [FAILED], What's a *.GZ

I have a VIA sound card that has a (Red Hat) Linux driver on the CD. It's a
*.gz file. I tried to use gunzip to unzip it, but then I don't know what to
  do with it after that.

*.gz doesn't really help much here - you should really post more of the
filename

But: if the file is named something like "via-2.7.98.tar.gz" your
command
from a terminal/console/plaintext screen should be as follows:

'tar -zxvf via-2.7.98.tar.gz' (without the quotes).

Running this commandline will extract (in most cases) the files within
the archive to a subdirectory within the directory from which you gave
the command. In the example above, the subdirectory would be named
 'via-2.7.98' (again without the quotes)

Normally you would 'cd via-2.7.98' to change into that directory.

Now the REALLY IMPORTANT PART Within that directory there _should_
be a file called 'README' along with a bunch of other files. You should
read and understand the content of the README before proceeding because
it
will(should) explain the next few steps for you.

Usually however you'll execute a series of instructions which are as
follows:
'./configure'
'make'
become superuser (type 'su' tap enter, type the superuser password and
tap
enter again and then
'make install'

That should be enough to get you really asking questions!!! I'll see
what
pops up eh?

I noticed recently during the boot up process that I see a RED [Failed] go
by. Most of what I see says [Passed]. I believe it has something to do
with a sound card device failing, but it goes by too fast. (Is there any
way to slow this down, or view a text file that shows the order in which
things are executed, mounted, whatever, during the boot up process)

Those messages are recorded during each bootup in the file
/var/log/dmesg
you can look at those messages by executing 'dmesg' (Without Quotes).

The next step is dependant on what particular step is failing.

I recently found out that my modem is obviously already configured for
Linux. I configured a PPP connection that causes it to dial. I hear it

We need rather more info that you've given us here.
How/where did you make the configuration?
Are you using Dial-on-demand?

Netscape should be configured with your ISP's details in the Edit -
Prefs
menu - of which the very minimum is the address of a homepage - although
you may not even have to do that in some cases.

Any help with any of these would be greately appreciated. If anyone has any
useful information from when they were learning Linux, I'm all ears.

How did you set up your windows dialer? Was it already done when you
took
possession of the machine? Netscape and Internet Explorer are not that
different when it comes to functions.

Cheers

Linux is a secure OS, unlike windows (including NT) you MUST have 'root'
(administrator) account and a valid password for it. You should also create
user accounts as you should never log in as root unless you are making
system changes.

start linux in single user mode, i think failsafe may do it, if not edit

when it loads you should still be on the command prompt, type linuxconf,
whaen this program loads you will be able to change root password, should
be

you should be able to use the new password as root,

I juts ran a fdisk /MBR. Hopefully, that will fix it. However, I going to buy

Re: [newbie] Can't Connect To Internet

2000-10-29 Thread Greg Stewart

Here's something I ranted about approximately a year ago...

Try the following link--it is a BBS/Message board that deals with free ISPs.
Sift through the mesages, and visit the providers' web pages to find a
couple that are in your area. When you find some you like, you can apply for
accounts.

Set up your Linux dial-up (and, actually your Windows dial-up) for one or
more of these accounts, according to the information from the message board.
Dial in using each of the ones you've chosen to make sure you've set things
up correctly.

When you're comfortable that you have a dial-up connection that is fairly
reliable (and you may need to check occasionally for other free ISPs), then
you can call AOL and have them reduce your monthly charge from what, $23?,
to $9.95. In windows, you would dial up using the free ISP account(s), and
then start AOL, enter the Setup windows, and change the connection type to
TCP/IP. You won't use AOL to dial the internet anymore, but you will have
full access to their services and avoid paying their redicoulously
over-priced monthly fees. (I pay only $5-$7 more per month for a +/- 1Mbps
cable connection--so paying to dial into AOL at 56Kbps or less just seems
absurd to me).

[newbie] 7.2 Impressions

2000-10-29 Thread Anthony

Thanks to the wonders of a cable modem, I installed Mandrake 7.2 early Sunday
morning.

So far it seems quite a bit like 7.1, the only major differences being a nice
graphical bootup, and a nicer Kmail and Quanta (HTML editor for KDE). Now 7.2
does include KDE2, but I"m a Gnome person and Gnome hasn't changed much
between versions. I also haven't seen too much of a difference between
running X 4.0.1 and X 3.3.6. The printing is a lot better though with CUPS. A
month or so ago I had sent an email asking why printing looked really light
on the paper. But now it looks just like normal with 7.2. Also you now have
the option of directly booting into a desktop as a user, similar to the way
Windows does. So if you are the only one that uses your computer, then you
don't have to go login anymore when you boot up. Plus there are numerous
extra programs and configuration tools to play around with.

I did have a couple of problems installing it. The first time through the
instllation program hanged when I asked it to check for bad blocks on my
harddrive when it formatted. So the second time through I just formatted it
regularly and it worked. Then it told me my lpr, XFree86, and some other
package was corrupted and wouldn't install. So I went back to the package
select screen, reselected all the packages I wanted, tried it again, and it
worked. Where is that bug report thing for Mandrake at?

The other major problem I had when I finally booted it up, was that all the
Kmail messages I'd been deleting for the past 3 months suddenly appeared. So
I had over 10,000 emails sitting in the various folders in kmail. So I had to
get rid of most all the Newbie emails I'd saved over the last 3 months
because I didn't feel like going through 8,000 emails to find the 100 I
wanted. Reading through the help file on that problem, I discovered you have
to "Compact" the folder or something for it to "really" delete the emails off
your harddrive.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend spending hours downloading this, as it's not
that much of an improvement over 7.1. If you have a high-speed connection,
then maybe do it or use Cheapbytes, but I wouldn't pay the $30 or whatever
for the full upgrade at retail.

Uhm...there's a failsafe (simple) mode set up with LILO as well. I guess
I'm confused as you guys talk as though you don't understand the idea of
passwords. If you can get into your Linux box by simply booting and
selecting failsafe without a password, what's the point of passwords at all?

The other major problem I had when I finally booted it up, was that all
the
Kmail messages I'd been deleting for the past 3 months suddenly appeared.
So
I had over 10,000 emails sitting in the various folders in kmail.

That is interesting because, still in 7.1, from within NT using explore2fs I
looked at my kmail inbox folder and found numerous messages that I had also
deleted but were still there even though they do not show as present within
kmail. I suspect they will dissappear when I "pack" the folders which I
have not done for a while.

I like kde so when things calm down I will probably go to Mandrake 7.2 for
the new kde features.

I'm a complete newbie to Linux, so this may seem a little lame to most of
you. I've been following these messages for some time looking for
information on how to configure, install, and use my sound card and
modem.

I have a VIA sound card that has a (Red Hat) Linux driver on the CD.
It's
 a
*.gz file. I tried to use gunzip to unzip it, but then I don't know what
 to
  do with it after that.

I noticed recently during the boot up process that I see a RED [Failed]
go
by. Most of what I see says [Passed]. I believe it has something to do
with a sound card device failing, but it goes by too fast. (Is there any
way to slow this down, or view a text file that shows the order in which
things are executed, mounted, whatever, during the boot up process)

I recently found out that my modem is obviously already configured for
Linux. I configured a PPP connection that causes it to dial. I hear it
dialing, I hear it connecting, but I have no way to check anything else.
 It
will keep dialing and connecting about every 10 minutes, but I have no
 idea
how to use that connection. Netscape doesn't show any way in it's GUI to
configure it to use a specific PPP connection, and I can't get Netscape
to
  navigate even when I'm connected.

Any help with any of these would be greately appreciated. If anyone has
 any
useful information from when they were learning Linux, I'm all ears.

a little bug in lillo and grub you have to add the line in lillo mem: 128mb
i think thats how it goes im sure someone will correct me, for some reason
lillo and grub will not detect over 64mb so this line was added to help
correct the reporting feature to the linux kernel on bootup, when i get my

Re: [newbie] Password

2000-10-29 Thread Greg Stewart

Before changing lilo to reflect any memory config, in a terminal window,
type: cat /proc/meminfo
If the mem total indicates less RAM than you have installed, than you need
to edit lilo. If the mem total reflects the correct amount of memory, don't
touch anything.

If you do need to edit lilo, use your choice terminal editor, vi work fine.
The file is: /etc/lilo.conf

insert, at the very beginning, the following line, including the quotation
marks:

append="mem=128M"

Save the file, exit, and typr /sbin/lilo
You should see at least one line, possibly more:

Added linux*
Added failsafe

The asterisk indicates the default boot option.

Also, which programs are you referring to? Did you configure a swap
partition? How much video ram is there? What services are running (in
terminal type: top to view the system resource usage--it will tell you at
the top of the list which services are hogging memory and cpu time--there
are also GUI apps, but I use gnome, not KDE and don't what the heck it's
called for KDE).

Hi there, Joan! Well, I had the same problem, so I went into /etc/X11 as su,
and did a "mv X86Config X86Config.current". I ran XF86Setup, and only picked
the following modeselections:

640x480
8bit (256 color)

I left everything else the same (I picked use current configs at the start).

Then, I startx with this file, and I get an (ugly) 256 color, 640x480 desktop
that runs Starcraft perfectly! (even pretty fast - very playable). Now, when I
quit playing and am ready for my normal 32-bit/1024x768 desktop, I go back into
/etc/X11 (again, as su), and "mv XF86Config XF86Config.VGA-256", and "mv
XF86Config.current XF86Config". Restart X and you're back to your normal
desktop. I know this seems a little drawn out, just to play a game but it does
work. There is a script that is supposed to be able to use that specific
X86Config file we created for Starcraft, but I've not been able to get it to
work correctly (without going through the changes I did) but I've not been able
to get it to work correctly. ;-(

Hope this helps!

[newbie] harddisk install

2000-10-29 Thread Ashley Moore

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to perform a harddisk install.

I have a Compaq Contura 410c - 486 DX2 50 / 8 Mb RAM / 2 GB HDD / Color
VGA.
No internal CDROM. So I connect an external CDROM thru the paralled port on
an Onspec controller. I download and burnt the 'AIR-486' image. The 2 BG is
partitioned as 650 MB FAT, remaining blank for LM install. I copied the
contents of the /Mandrake/Base and Mandrake/RPMS directories into
appropriate directories on the FAT partition thru DOS. I found
'harddisk.bat' in the /dosutils/autoboot directory of the cd. When I run
this from the HD, I am asked to specify where the Mandrake/base and
Mandrake/RPMS directories are. After this I get a 'Stage 2 failed' message.

I don't know if I'm doing the right thing. Has anyone performed a HD
install of this version, that can guide me thru the initial details.
I also tried running the 'autoboot.bat' off the CD. It copies a couple of
files and then exits into 'c:\Mandrake'. On examinzation of the batch file
I found it was trying to invoke 'cdrom.bat', which I guess fails as the
CDROM is on the parallel port.

Also does anyone know of a 'paride.img' which I had found on a site (can't
remeber where), but that was for RH 5.2. That image gives the option of
selecting a parallel port cd for install media.

Ashley Moore.

[newbie] XFree86 driver Settings for SiS 620

2000-10-29 Thread Ot Ratsaphong

Greetings from Australia,

I'm hoping someone can help or point me in the right direction.

I have just installed L-MDK 7.2b3. The install was very smooth.

My Hardware configuration:
Motherboard: PCChips100 - M748LMRT
Onboard Video Chip: SiS 620
CPU: Celeron 400
SDRAM: 64Mb
Video RAM: 2Mb (I have tried setting Video RAM to 4MB)
Screen Resolution: 1024 x 778, 16bit colour

The problem/challenge that I've got:

Once the X login screen comes up, I notice vertical streaks on the screen.
When I've logged in I get vertical streaks at set intervals on the screen.

On the left edge of the screen, there is a thin vertical area where I can
see a part of what is in the main screen. This happens with all Windows
Managers that I've tried (KDE, Gnome and Sawfish). So this suggests that the
problem may be something to do with the X server settings.

I have checked the XFree86 website and the X 4.01 supports my video driver.

I have not experienced this problem with L-MDK 7.0 and XFree86 3.3.6. SVGA
driver.

The problem is not critical, an annoyance more than anything. I like Linux
and am keen to use it as my main desktop but little thing like this make
Linux look really flaky.

Alternative, would someone please tell me how I can revert back to X 3.3.6.

Thanks,
Ot Ratsaphong

OK, thanks for the /usr tip. Will untar the JDK 2.1.3 there and see

After putting JDk there, all I had to do was open SO and check the
Java Setup under the Bookmarks. If all is well, it will show
Java
Development Software already installed. The bottom of the screen
will show "Java Home=/usr/jdk118_v3". I clicked OK and another
screen popped up saying that it would be enabled the next time I
opened SO. You should be good to go Benjamin.

Benjamin,
Look in your home directory under

/office52/usr/config/
You should find a file 'javarc'.
Mine looked like this before the Java Setup updated:

If you are missing it, create one like it and re run SO and the setup.

Re: [newbie] UsRobotics PCI Modem

2000-10-29 Thread Carroll Grigsby

Javier:
Are you are certain that it is not a winmodem? Although not all PCI
modems are winmodems, most are.
USR makes both kinds. The best place to settle the question is
www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html. It contains a very long list of
modems (sorted by manufacturer), and tells you if it is a real modem
(good news - although you've still got a problem, it's probably
solvable, a winmodem (bad news- probably won't work), or a linmodem --
that's a winmodem for which a Linux driver has been written. The site
also has a lot of links to other sites dedicated to modems. If you do
have a real modem, then the problem may be with
Plug-and-(sometimes)Play. I had this problem with my Zoom modem, and I
got around it be changing the jumpers on the card from pnp to com
whatever. If you do decide to go to the above site, it would be a good
idea to know the FCC ID number for your modem, as that is the primary
means of identification. The FCC ID is usually written on a white paper
tag on the card, which means that you have to look inside the box, and
that's something that may be inconvenient while you're on line.
Hope this helps,
