dell'albero.
Questo lavoro veniva fatto automaticamente dall'utility
supermount nelle vecchie Mandrake. Questa utility provvedeva
anche a smontare il CD quando volevi estrarlo.

Adesso devi farlo a mano.

boot seguendo le indicazioni contenute in /etc/fstab.

man mount e man fstab per maggiori dettagli.

Spero che l'amico Max sia riuscito a risolvere i suoi problemi con i CDrom.
Io no

Ho il masterizzatore che non c'è verso di farlo funzionare!!! Già in fase di
installazione (se tento di installare linux dal masterizzatore) me lo
riconosce a mi avvia l'installazione, ma poi... mi chiede di continuare
l'installazione dall'altro lettore CD.

To check if it's working, open a console and type: lpq

[newbie] filesharing and firewalling and ftp services HELP PLEASE!

2001-11-13 Thread Neil R Porter

Hi all

I have LM 8.1 setup with an adsl connection networked and sharing the net
connection to 2 win machines. I'm having problems setting up samba and
firewalling and ftp services properly.

1) How can I tell which processes are running... I have read about samba and
learn that it doesn't necessarily start up auto at boot time.. how can I
tell whether it is running somewhere in the background? Also, when I try to
test it the localhost doesn't seem to be setup correctly.. it's unknown..
omg.. how can localhost be unknown? but it is.. what have I done wrong
here..

2) this relates to number 1 in the sense that I have plenty of ways of
configuring a 'firewall' available to me however I don't know which firewall
is being used (whether more than 1 is actually running?!) etc.. I just
installed the whole of LM with all options ticked when I installed it and
notice that it says starting bastille firewall as it boots up.. again, which
one is being used and how can i tell ? (any suggestions for which firewall
would be best accepted thankfully!)

3) I have full web and ftp services.. and while I'm happy(ish) with the web
hosting (although it hasn't been tested as being crack proof - and no doubt
isn't with current settings!) I am definitely NOT happy with the ftp
setting.. AGAIN, how can I tell which ftp proggy is giving the box the ftp
service? I can ftp in from a remote comp, however, if i use a user account
on the LM box as the login then I can literally go round the whole file
system.. eek.. i don't want this.. instead some way of making it only
present a folder or two of my choosing would be safer..

I know it's a lot to ask of this list.. and it's a long email to read (made
even longer by these few words).. but if i can get some help here it would
be much appreciated as I really want to use linux (apache etc) instead of
IIS spits to one side

Re: [newbie] filesharing and firewalling and ftp services HELP PLEASE!

2001-11-13 Thread Derek Jennings

 Hi all

Hi... You got your ADSL working then ?

I have LM 8.1 setup with an adsl connection networked and sharing the net
connection to 2 win machines. I'm having problems setting up samba and
 firewalling and ftp services properly.

 1) How can I tell which processes are running... I have read about samba
and learn that it doesn't necessarily start up auto at boot time.. how can
I tell whether it is running somewhere in the background? Also, when I try
to test it the localhost doesn't seem to be setup correctly.. it's
unknown.. omg.. how can localhost be unknown? but it is.. what have I done
 wrong here..

From a console type 'top' or for a graphical display
KDE Menu ApplicationsMonitoringKDE System Guard

If you just want to know which services you have defined, and running, and
which will automatically load at boot the go to
Control CenterSystemServices

Local host can indeed be unknown Check your file /etc/hosts The first line
should read something like
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost

If you are trying to get the graphical samba setup facility SWAT running you
must first check that the swat daemon is running (I think it may need the
xinetd daemon as well) Check this in Control Center

 2) this relates to number 1 in the sense that I have plenty of ways of
configuring a 'firewall' available to me however I don't know which
firewall is being used (whether more than 1 is actually running?!) etc.. I
just installed the whole of LM with all options ticked when I installed it
and notice that it says starting bastille firewall as it boots up.. again,
which one is being used and how can i tell ? (any suggestions for which
firewall would be best accepted thankfully!)

All firewall utilities ultimately use the iptables function in the kernel. On
the standard Mandrake install you have a choice of:
TinyFirewall - in the Firewall section of Control Center
BastilleChooser - To set up a basic firewall
InteractiveBastille- A questionaire type interface

I do not like any of them, because it is very difficult for a newbie to work
out if the firewall is active or not, and they all stop Samba from working
without mentioning the fact. The most common difficulty newbies seem to have
with samba is having a firewall in place without realising it.

On the Mandrake Disc is a utility called Guarddog which allows you to set up
your firewall in a simple intuitive way.
My favourite however is Firestarter which has a nice Wizard to set it up
(Linux oldies will cringe at this point) What makes Firestarter good is that
if the firewall is hit you get a visual and audible alert, and you can
dynamically open holes or close them whenever you need to. It is not on the
Mandrake disc, but Texstar has an rpm in his download section at
www.pclinuxonline.com

To guide you in setting up samba check out the guide at mandrakeuser
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/connect/index.html#ss

and if you look at these posts, where I have been guiding a newbie through
setup, you will see some of the simple mistakes
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/mub/viewtopic.php?topic=2189forum=617

 3) I have full web and ftp services.. and while I'm happy(ish) with the web
hosting (although it hasn't been tested as being crack proof - and no
doubt isn't with current settings!) I am definitely NOT happy with the ftp

I'm no expert. but I know all ftp access should be anonymous as they have
passwords in clear text.

HTH
Derek

I know it's a lot to ask of this list.. and it's a long email to read (made
even longer by these few words).. but if i can get some help here it would
be much appreciated as I really want to use linux (apache etc) instead of
 IIS spits to one side

[newbie] Sound Card: Opti PnP

2001-11-13 Thread Hugo Ferreira

Hi,

First and foremost, I would like to apologise for the lengthy mail,
but I am sure those that are willing to help me will find the info.
important. Please note that there may be some incorrections because
I am on another location/machine at the moment and am writing this from
some notes I took at the time.

I am newbie at Linux/Unix and attempted to install Mandrake Liniux 8.1 on a
AMD 200+ with 64 Mbytes of RAM and two volumes (4 and 1.5 Giba
respectivelly).
On volume 1 I had (have?) a:
 a) Dos partition of 100 MBytes (for booting)
 b) FAT 32 w/ Win95 (+/- 2G)
 c) NTFS (a little less than 2G)
On volume 2 is:
 a) Free for Linux (/dev/hdb)

I have had some trouble on boot issues (explained in another e-mail) and am
now
attempting to install my sound card. Just in case this helps: I also
installed a HP Deskject
printer which was correctly set-up and is functioning. The S3 Video card was
correctlly
detected (!!), installed and is running. The monitor (SAMTRON 95P Plus) was
not listed so I
used a high freq. SVGA set-up and this seems to work fine. On install I had
an IOMega Zip
drive connected between the LPT1 and the printer. The install indicated a
detection of an
IMM SCSI and asked if I had any more (answered no because I only have a two
port IDE).
The modem was correctly installed and seems to be working fine. I still need
to configure
the mail clients before all is ok at the network end (hence the need to send
e-mail via another
machine).

Several problems seem to be festering:
1) During the boot-up, some indications of DMA time-out when accessing
/dev/hdb are
showing. The machine seems to react very sluggishly, don't know if it is
this.
2) The modules file (sorry don't recall the /etc/'s file name) shows two
SCSI adapters
(sda1 and sda6) if I remember correctly.
3.) Mandrake's control center shows the detection of 2 unknown devices. This
seems to be
related to the sound card.
4.) The sound card doesn't work.
5.) OpenGL screen savers don't work.

After some reading I am aware that two steps exist to handle installation of
devices:
a) The detection of the devices (PnP and the isapnptools)
b) The instalation of the modules (drivers in win-speak?) with the
{xxx}mode{xxx}
routines like insmod and modeprobe.

What happened:
The install seemd to detect the sound card correctly (OPTi PnP card). When I
launch
Mandrakes control center, the sound cards listed in the hardware section
show two entries:
1) the sound card: vendor unkown, module mad16
2) the MPU401: vendor unkown and modeule unkown.

When I select the card, attempt to alter the IRQ's and DMA as per Win95
configuration,
the configuration application gives the following error:
 modprobe: can't locate module isa-pnp.

The detection seems to have worked fine save for two unkown entries. When I
attempt to
install the modules as follows:
 modprobe -v mad16
I get the follwing error:
hint:insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
IO or IRQ
 parameters.

When I look at the /etc/isapnp.gone file I see all the lines with IRQ and
DMA cahnnel
data commented. The /etc/isapnp.conf seems to be very confusing.

Question: How should I proceed to corrcet the sound card installation?
Should I attempt a new
detection (isapnp?), change parameters (in the /etc/isapnp.conf) or
attempt installing the modules
in a different manner (how?).

TIA.
Hugo

But it's always sound-less. I'm playing w/ xine and I thought it might

the sound... Does anyone know what's going on? Thank you.

Re: [newbie] fat32 vs reiserfs for storage

2001-11-13 Thread Rick [Kitty5]

unless you want to access your file from winows and from your post, you
don't, there is really no point in storing your files on fat32. As far
as the disk usage goes, on a 8 GB partition, the smallest block on a fat
32 partition was 8 kb i think. so a 10 kb file would use up 16 kb on you
fat 32 partition, and a 30 kb file would use up 32 kb of space. the
larger the file the less percentage of space wasted. but since reiserFS
is native to linux you could even store your applications there and run
them from the reiserFS partition. somehow i wasn't able to do this on a
  dos partion.

you can set a 4kb block with partition magic

fat32 has the advantage of being the lowest common denominator, you can have
access to your data with a single win98 boot disk, and you can access the
drive from any PC (should yours die) - Unless you have plenty of Linux
friends, getting at your files stored on a Linux partition could be real
pain.

I have a small drive in a removable bay that I backup all important
documents to (as well as tape) so in the event of something going wrong, I
can quickly take said drive to any other PC and have access to the data.
(unlike my tape backup)

You are on the right track. By fedault, Mandrake creates an fstab entry

it a different name (and thus a different directory under /mnt).

If you have a local area network, 2 or more computers connected, and you
setup the LAN and eth0 during install, there is a bug in 8.1 that seems to
stop the internet connection. Try going to a console and suroot passwd and

Hi tek!

Nope. I'm using the pre-installed version. Btw, shortly after I sent the last
reply, I solved my problems with gui Postgresql Access.

In case you run into the same problem: it took me three days to figure this
one out - I forgot to su to root (and exit after!) for:

bash$ export DISPLAY=hostname:0.0

As soon as I had entered this, of course I could access the db! (A big duhh
here!). I've found that if I plug away at something long enough, I get to
know the program.

I was going to change LM's directory settings, but after reading enough, I
left them alone. I works great! Btw the listing from Konrad Hernblad?? was
mine -- I don't know how that happened!

Now comes the fun stuff -- formatting the table structure. Have fun!

Andre

If you enter the qtcups command instead of the lpr, the cups dialog (same

I guess you have a dns problem. Writing your isp's DNS servers' ips to
/etc/resolv.conf most probably will solve the problem.

say if they are 1.2.3.4 and 1.2.3.5 then write to resolv.conf

nameserver 1.2.3.4
nameserver 1.2.3.5

You can get these numbers from your isp, or if you have windows, use
winipcfg (write it at start -- run ) and note the DNS servers.

Thanks for your detail information.

I used pop3 server and I repeated numerous configuration on Kmail settings
as follows ;
(I skip Sending Mail configuration which has no problem)

INCOMING MAIL

Account Type Pop Account
under General Tab
Host pop.aaa.net (I also tried only aaa.net without pop)
Port 110 (defaut)
X Store POP password in configuration file
(also tried deselect this item)
X Delete mail file from server

Under Security Tab
Under Encryption
- blank all items

Under Authentication method
Tried all items

Each time when I checked mail, following warning pop-up

...
.
I said pass your password
And then the server said
-ERR authorization failed

In another PC running Win ME, I configure Eudora with the same settings and
password. It works fine without problem.

My Mandrake 8.1 was not very stable. I encountered lot of difficulties to
install it from the CDs which were burnt from the ISO Images downloaded
from website (md5sum matched). Now PS/2 port is still not working and I
have to connect the mouse to serial port.

Later I found telnet client command missing from bash and I have RPM
it. But Kmail sitll could not download emails from ISP server with the
same warning pop-up.

From Konsole window I typed telnet pop.aaa.net 110 (also
tried  aaa.net without pop) with same result as follows;

Trying xxx.x.xxx.xxx ...
Connected to smtp01.aaa.net (xxx.x.xxx.xxx)
Escape character is ' ^] '
+ OK [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When I typed either login or password it prompted

_ERR. authorization first.

I tried to locate the log file but could not discover it.

Have you had any recommendation ?

The problem is that each task is performed by different protocols. You need
a SMTP server for sending mails and ussually a POP server for recieving.
And, as long as a passwor is not needed for an SMTP server (whenever it is
an open realy) you will be able to send your mails without problems.

In the other hand, you will need a password to download your messages from
your POP server, and if it doesn't match you'll get an error message.

I recommend you to check your Kmail configuration, and if you are not

Shane, another thing to try, with Earthlink/Mindspring they use contracted
services and I notice my ISP connection changes almost everytime I dial in,
so you might go to the Kpanelconfigurationnetworkingppp, ipx whatever and
enter your IP addresses and password and etc here and then try logging on
again, This may not hold but after you have logged the first time it will or
should continue to work. The Mindspring/Earthlink DNS servers seem to be some
kind of proxy set up or something cause if you look at the logs to see where
you logged in the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx addresses change regularly. HTH

Re: [newbie] Need DVD drive install help

2001-11-13 Thread Miark

I don't think it has to be changed. You may want to

ln -s /dev/hdb /dev/dvd

so that DVD-specific applications, which often look
for DVDs at /dev/dvd, see DVDs using default
settings. But I don't think there's anything you have
to do. DVD drives are basically CD drives that can
read DVDs.

What exactly can't you do?

Printer Samsung ML4500 printing through CUPS.

Well frankly I've never printed multipage documents under Abiword. I always
use Staroffice :)
So I tried it. Apart from some loading problems (Abiword just disappeared on
me ) forcing me to load/open from the commandline--no problems.
On clicking the print button (9 page document) the dialog pops up, I change
lpr to qtcups and press -print-. Then the cups-print dialog pops-up and
that's the normal printqueu for me.
I'd check out the page settings of both dialogs and see if there's something
awry there, if the problem persists.

Yep, seems to happen when a page is loading and you click on bookmarks.
Even worse when a popup (eg. allow cookies) comes up when you have the

I just kill it (CTRL+ALT+ESC) but yep its very annoying. Luckily I very

[newbie] Some Windows hang-ons...

2001-11-13 Thread Johnson, David

Folks,

I'd love to ditch Windows completely, but there is still some good software
that I hang on to that I think is only available for Windows. Somebody
prove me wrong:

Outlook with Exchange server - I run an Exchange server at the house and
want to maintain the Outlook functionality. Is there Linux software to
mimic this?

MS Money - I have grown to love this software over the years for keeping
track of my finances. Is there comparable software out there for Linux?

Turbo Tax - I discovered this gem last year and love the ease with which it
helps me do my taxes every year. Is there tax prep software out there?

Finally, Games - I do quite a bit of LAN gaming with my friends who run
Windows. I know that things like Quake 3 are around, but what about others
like Half-life, Diablo II, etc. Is there anywhere near the selection of
first rate games for Linux as for Windows?

Thanks for any help.

2001-11-13 Thread James R. McKenzie

Stupid question alert!

Are you installing from a CDR/W drive or an old fashioned ROM drive? I've
had no luck what so ever installing from my PLEXTOR 16/10/40a (ATAPI) and
I've tried both LM 8.1 and RH 7.2. My cheezy/generic PINE 52x CD-ROM drive
has very few troubles however. I don't know if this is even vaguely
relevant but even if I could get either to install they wouldn't fully
boot, they'd get to some point and seize and it would be a different point
each time. Tried it with ext2 and ext3 with BOTH distros. Don't know if
this helps hurts or makes no difference one way or another but anyway just
in case my experiences are now on record.

==
Separate issue I still need help with...

BTW I still haven't been able to get my PC-ZIP100 to work with either
distro, it shows on the desktop[s] but I can't access it. I get something
about device unmountable and that I need to specify the file system type.

Mobo= Asus P3V4X revision 1.00, I'm afraid to flash it in case it hurls
HDD = Old Maxtor 8 gig, UDMA 33 family, ,5400RPM spindle
Ribbon Cable = 80 pin type AKA UDMA 66/100
Zip Drive = NEC PC - 100
Linux' I've tried = LM 8.1 (8.0 won't boot, gets to loading Font XServer
and freezes, Red Hat 7.2 ($60 version).

I know I need to send more info, please specify what that is and I will.

 Hello,

This is a problem I haven't been able to solve.

Hi. I'm very new to Linux so I bought the 3 CD pack for Mandrake 8.1
expecting the installation to be pretty much trouble free.
 Unfortuantely,
after the initial setup/ welcome screen using the boot disk and bootable
CD-ROM, the setup said that it couldn't find an installation CD in the
CD-ROM. The error message is as follows:
I can't access a Mandrake-Linux Installation disk in your CDROM Drive.
By looking in the setup log I also saw some of these messages:
4ide0: Drive 1 didn't accept speed setting, Oh well
 4hdb: Status timed-out
 4hdb: DMA Disabled
4hdb: drive not ready for command
 4isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=3.40, iso_blknum=151339
 and other stuff like this

If you guys don't know of any solutions off the top of your heads then I
guess I'll see if we can get it up and runing at the Installfest.
 Thanks.

 /
He has a DFI motherboard with Award BIOS. bios version is current.

CD rom is primary slave, HD is primary master

This problem also occurs when using RedHat 7.2 and Mandrake 8.1 We
 tried
two copies of the installmedia, so the disk wasn't bad.

Demo Linux boots just fine off of the CD-Rom.

 /

First of all, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I built the
computer myself and currently I have Win 98 and Win 2K on two seperate
primary partitions. Then I used PartitionMagic 5.0 to create a Linux
partition. Anyway, the CD-ROM is bootable, but since I was having
 trouble
with just booting off the CD-ROM I tried it again with a bootdisk. I
 think
that I'm using the cdrom.img file if that is what you mean by the image
 file
 - the actual CD is from MandrakeSoft. Also, windows has no trouble
 booting
from the CD-ROM. I got an email from Eric Sandall and I asked him what
 the
situation is with getting rides to the Installfest and what all
 peripherials
we need to bring. I can bring my Mandrake 8.1 CD's, but do I need to
 bring
anything else besides my tower (i.e. monitor, keyboard, mouse)? Anyway,
 thanks for the help.

What you need to do is, burn the ISO file onto a CDR. Then put that
into your cdrom drive and make your system boots off of the CD first.
Then from there the Mandrake CD should boot up. Then just go threw the
steps of the installation. I would do the recommended install. Once
you get to the step where you have to create HDA and stuff, just wipe
the whole thing out and then do a auto allocate. I'm sure you wont be
needing win98 anymore. ;-)

No. KMail does not see a mail until it is already downloaded.
However there is an application called Mailfilter which you can run to
preprocess the mail headers before you download them from your ISP.

when I tried it my computer would hang on unloading usb drivers.

Until a fixed 2.4.8 kernel appears we have no choice but to mount/unmount
manually
I like to keep kwikdisk as an icon in my icon tray to mount/unmount at a
click. It ain't ideal, but heck its just like a mackintosh :-)

Here is my fstab. It works just fine

/dev/hdc/mnt/cdrom auto user,exec,noauto 0 0
/dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2 auto
iocharset=iso8859-1,user,exec,noauto,codepage=850,nodev  0 0
/dev/fd0/mnt/floppy auto
iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,nosuid,exec,user,noauto,nodev,codepage=850,unhide  0
0

This accessing seems extremely temperamental in LM8.1 and is driving me
nuts at the moment. Something as simple as this, that has been sorted
previously, should work fine and dandy in LM8.1!

I am aware that there have been many posts regarding this, but I can't
access them at present! What is the answer? Is there a simple 5 minute
fix that will sort it all out for me? Any help would be much appreciated...

Yeah its annoying, but I've kind of got used to it. kwikdisk is kinda cute,
and I used to be a mac user so its not so different.

What's most annoying is that Mandrake knew about it before release, but for
commercial reasons released it anyway instead of waiting 1 or 2 weeks for a
fix.

also, is there a linux alternative to import ms outlook data (calendar,

re drafting packages on linux, try checking out the below 2:

 -kivio

they're both located under office/graphs from the mandrake menu...

Hi tek!

Without the export DISPLAY statement, I couldn't load the GUI Postgresql

following error messages (since the postmaster wasn't running):

Connection to database 'postgres' failed. connectDB() failed: Is the
postmaster running and accepting connections at 'UNIX Socket' on port '5432'?

or

Wish I had su-ed then typed the command. It would have saved me lots of

From what I've read, and what I've played with, you don't need to make
the Outlook Express mail file anything. You should be able to use it
as is, and then port it to something you can use in *nix.

http://freshmeat.net/projects/mbx2mbox/

I was looking for something to port Eudora Pro mail files to Linux, and
had a bit of frustration and problems and then it didn't really do that
well of a job. But check out that app above. Maybe it will work.

or the external ip(24.x.x.x)but as soon as I try to connect from out side

I am not running a firewall (to my knowledge). Any help would be great.

It definitely sounds like firewalling of some sort. So you can't even ping
the address from outside. If you can actually ping it then that's a start
and you might want to try:
telnet host 80
where host is the address of the machine (and assuming the server is on
port 80).
Also something else to look at, assuming you can ping, is the logs on the
server machine to see if you get anything relating to the connection.

Re: [newbie] web page woe's

2001-11-13 Thread Tim Holmes

24-net... which one? Are you running off a RoadRunner connection?
They closed down port 80 after the CodeRed fiasco. So you'd have to
change the port you use for your webserver in httpd.conf to something
like port 90. That's what most people do. http://name.dns.com:90/ is
how you'd access it.

But make sure you have the processes running. Run these commands.

[root@r2d2 /root]# /etc/init.d/httpd status

Apache is running.
httpd: 1308 19629 19628 19627 19310 19309 19308 19307 1074

Apache-mod_perl is running.
httpd-perl: 1064 1063 1062 1061 1060

Use /etc/init.d/httpd extendedstatus for more information.

[root@r2d2 /root]# /etc/init.d/network status
Configured devices:
lo eth0
/Devices that are down:

Devices with modified configuration:

[root@r2d2 /root]# /etc/init.d/sshd status
sshd (pid 709) is running...

If you get output similar to that, then you should be able to acquire
connections from the outside world.

By default, Mandrake 8.0 does not install Bastille, and even if you do
have iptables installed, there aren't any set up to block certain
traffic.

First thing, make sure you can ping the machine. Can you ping your
work machine? There might be something on your work firewall that's
denying you. So do some testing on both sides to find out where the
problem is.

You must have SCSI emulation support, SCSI generic support, SCSI CD-ROM
support compiled in your kernel or even as modules you can load.
--

I added insmod ide-scsi.o to rc.local and that did load according to lsmod.
The SCSI support is compiled into the kernel, apparently, since my SCSI
CD-ROM works OK. For some reason, I can't get the CDRW to work and Gcombust
can't find it and cdrecord -scanbus can't find it. The CDRW worked in 7.2
but I had sent the CDRW in for repair prior to installing 8.1. I suppose
that the simpler solution is to do a fresh install of 8.1 with the CDRW
installed this time. If that doesn't get it going then I'm going to
reinstall 7.2. I might reinstall 7.2 anyway since I can't get my internet
connection sharing working in 8.1 (worked great in 7.2). I'm beginning to
believe that there are still some major bugs that need to be worked out of 8.1.
