[newbie] Strange Behaviour by File Manager (Superuser) - Repost
Hi Y'all, I opened Konqueror as superuserthe other day with the intention of moving some files from my user directory to my windows drive to which the user does not have write permission. When I navigated to my /home/user directory, the window displayed a web page - the UK Mirror Service Homepage even though most of the links displayed on it didn't work. I'm sure this isn't supposed to happen. Anyone ever seen anything like this ? Well, I don't know what happened, but while faffing about trying to configure Gnome 2.2 and Sawfish it all came together. Nautilus is dead, the logout button on the panel now works as intended, the session is saved automatically, and whatever Stephen's reservations are about Gnome 2.2 there doesn't seem to be much that affects the way my desktop is set up. A good point is the accuracy of the save sessions function. Until now it had always been a bit hit or miss. All I have to do now is get it to talk PPP. There was one odd occurrence; somewhere along the line aumix stopped working for lcl, still OK for root. It turned out that all the permissions in /dev/sound were 600 - had to chmod them to 666. OK after that. (Maybe aumix is supposed to be run suid root.) Thanks to everybody for your helpful suggestions and for putting up with my moaning. Will make a note of your suggestions Stephen in case of trouble later. [newbie] UT not accepting connections
I'm using a MDK 9.1 box as a gateway machine for a cable connection with Comcast. It's running Firestarter as a firewall, and I have ports -7781 forwarded to my comp for hosting Unreal Tournament games. Last night I tried to host a game, but my buddy couldn't connect to my machine. I checked Firestarter and it wasn't registering the attempts which means the connection was going through to my box. My box was running UT on Winblows XP. I checked UT's .ini files, and it is set to accept connections on . Why do you think he couldn't make it through to me? (And yes, I could connect to him.) [newbie] 2.6-test kernel rpms available?
Hello! I finally got all the kinks worked out with the conversion of attbi to comcast and everything's finally settled in. It was kinda strange being off the list. I've been trying to keep up by reading the archives while working everything out but I've missed a lot. Good to be back. Re: [newbie] Graphical-Mode Login Session
Follow ed's advice. You will then need to go to the Control Center to Set up your user (Start>Configuration>Other>UserDrake). I am assuming that the only log-in you have now is for "root"?. User "root" is not for everyday use, it is the equiv. of Windows "Administrator" with all of the attendant pivileges. Once your user is set-up, you can check to see if you can log-in as your "username" with your password. If this works you can then set-up to boot directly to the gui log-in by editing (any text editor, KWrite is fine, emacs is better) your /etc/inittab Find the line that says id:3:initdefault: and put a # sign in front of it like this #id:3:initdefault: below it put this line: id:5:initdefault: If what you want is to boot to gui, this is ONE of the ways to make it so. One slow day, he found that he had time to chat with the new entrants. To the first one he asked, "What's your IQ?" The new arrival replied, "190". They discussed Einstein's theory of relativity for hours. When the second new arrival came, Einstein once again inquired as to the newcomer's IQ. The answer this time came "120". To which Einstein replied, "Tell me, how did the Cubs do this year?" and they proceeded to talk for half an hour or so. I can't find it in the current Moz, so perhaps it was a Netscape thing. What I'm using is the 'allow pop-ups' with exceptions, which can be set on a site by site basis. Alternatively you could deny with exceptions. This is found either in Edit > Preferences > Privacy & Security > Popup Windows, or from the Tools menu where you can block or allow from the site you are currently on, and also manage your lists. I haven't bought a writer yet, but would like to at some point. What I would really like to do, though, is to transfer from tape some of the footage that is most unlikely to ever make it to dvd. Some are old- or tv-produced films, many are documentaries. I would say the longest would be 90 minutes, with most around 1 hour. Would they fit on current blanks? And hypothetically, we are told that new technology will enable us to fit several times more on disks that are just around the corner. Does that mean that we are going to be forced to pay for many, many hours of unwanted rubbish stuck on the end every time we buy a film, just to make them bigger than the new standard? 1. Original post was in error (please re-read earlier post)...As I said THEN, it was meant for the OT list, where we have an on-going discussion on this topic. 2. This list has ALWAYS had fun minor diversions...Even BEFORE the OT list. Some of the "minor diversions" have been quite long winded (and heated!) You just missed a long discussion about this. 99% + of bytes are direct Linux I think you can deal with the <1% :) Other lists ALSO have OT off shoots at times. Life is not one dimentional...If you can not handle this, filter, or choose "ignore thread" in your mail reader! If you stick around, you will find lots of fun and creative "thank you" emails and generally fun comments, articles, web sites, recreational tidbits, etc. in the context of each person contributing to the list. Firstly, cdrecord can burn DVD's, thus can most GUI's that are still in development. But, and please note this: your DVD writer cannot burn 1:1 coppies of most film DVD's you buy from the shop. The reason for this is simple. DVD's sold with films have a capacity of well over 6 Gigs, and mostly they are filled over the 6 Gigs, not because the extras are neccissary, or even because "the client is king and wants to see it", but purely because the DVD's you can buy (blank) and burn are limited to I believe 4.3 Gigs. So, to put it simple, you can buy 1.4MB floppes with software, but if you want blank ones, you can only write onto 712KB floppies ;-) What I'm trying to say here is commercial DVD's are specificly produced over the limit of blank DVD's to prevent coppying. The encryption technique has been broken / hacked, and they did know this was bound to happen. If someone makes it, someone will break it. But it's impossible to fit 6 gigs onto 4, that's a fact, unless you start editing the origional DVD cutting out extras, remaking the "toc" and menu system if wanted to run in a commercial DVD player. It is possible, no doubt about that, but it's not easy from what I know. Actually, I read an interesting article about someone who actually took the time and effort to try this, and wrote a detailed description of everything they encountered along the way. He concluded that for single copy of a DVD, he would far rather just buy the origional. It was woth the money (just), but definitely not the full day he was busy with it. Actually in this specific case, he was cheaper buying the origional, as he messed up 2 blanks while trying to get it right. So why are there illegal DVD's around, which have been coppied? Well, because someone takes the time to carefully do all this shit, but not for one copy, but for hundreds. Then, and only really then does it become worth-while. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that, if you bought this DVD writer for the sole purpose of coppying easily DVD's, you were far mislead, as many are. DVD's seem only handy for backups really. This would be for me the only reason why I would ever maybe buy one at it's current restriction. > What I'm really looking for is an easy way (gui or command line) to > create an image of a dvd-disc, put it on my harddisk, and burn it on a > DVD+R or DVD-R. Explained above ;-) I hope this may clear up some facts here. Although you probably should not quote me exactly, what I have written here is fact to a point. Just check yourself. The DVD's you have (blanks) are 4.x Gigs, right. Mount a DVD, and do `df -h` ... unless it's either a documentary where they weren't bothered, or a b-rated film, chances are it's above 6 Gigs. [newbie] Why doesn't msec set directory permissions properly?
I asked this question on the newbie side but received no replies. Maybe it is a question for the experts... Because the machine in question will end being a server connected 24x7 to the Internet, I set its security level to higher (4). However, I want to change the privileges for /usr/share/doc to be world browsable and readable. I used drakeperm to set the directory permissions and when I look at /etc/security/msec/perm.local I see the following line: /usr/share/doc/adm.adm755 I then ran msec but when I checked the permissions on the directory I still see: drwxr-x--- 297 admadm In /var/log/messages I do see that msec is reading the perm.local file. Any idea why is msec ignoring my permissions? Thanks, Avi Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Re: [newbie] mbr question
Hello, You might want to look at the "Linux+Win9x+Grub HOWTO." I have been trying to use a CD that seems to offer the promise of installing Window$ NT (mostly to see if it would work). Since I already have ML9.1 installed and don't really want to mess it up, I decided to carve out a third primary partition at the end of my hard disk, and see what could be done. The HOWTO purports to teach one how to install the Win OS on something other that the beginning of the hard drive, but make GRUB fool it into thinking that it is [with lines such as "map (hd0,2) (hd0,0)." The CD that I have used to install NT writes a bunch of files to disk, then instructs you to reboot, at which point the installation is supposed to continue, but I can't seem to get beyond this point (any suggestions or explanations would be welcome). At any rate, I don't lay claim to any kind of expertise (I don't even know what "BR" means), but this how to, and the grub info page (especially the 'map' commands). The grub info also says, however, that some OAS might use special drivers that would make this mapping irrelevant. Smells like Win to me :^( ) In the hope that this isn't wholly irrelevant, Jim. For those who have not done the kernel upgrade and have a Nvidia video card you will probably need to do the install of the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run package. The way I did it was to start the system with the new kernel, it would not give me an xserver, naturally, so I logged in as my user and the did su and the root password. Then changed directories to where the .run file was and typed the "sh NVIDIA-Linux*" command. It started the run and indicated that the package was not compiled for my kernel, did I want the installer to compile Nvidia for my kernel? I chose OK and so it did. Rebooted when done and my xserver was back on line. Nice feature Nvidia threw in there and I didn't know it could do that. Just a heads up for the Nvidia card crowd. Generally, DO NOT log in as root. For admin tasks, go to a root terminal. When you run "Mandrake Control Center" or other GUI admin type functions you will be prompted for root password. Re: [newbie] Does mandrakeUpdate really work?
Thank you everyone for your help regarding the update of the kernel. It does make sense that the kernel should not be updated but rather be installed as a new package. What made me assume that the new kernel should show up as an update is the following sentence from the advisory (http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/advisories/advisory.php?name=MDKSA- 2003:066-2): "To upgrade automatically, use MandrakeUpdate." which is apparently wrong. Avi Because kernels must not be *upgraded*. They must be *installed*. If you try to upgrade a kernel, it will destroy your system. That's why Mandrake removed the opportunity to *upgrade* kernels via the Control Center. If you want the new kernel, do as follows : Download the kernel-whatsoever.rpm to some directory of your choice, for example /home/avi/downloads. Change into that directory, su into root and then run : urpmi kernel-*whatever*.rpm This will install the new kernel. That done, edit your /etc/lilo.conf to make the new kernel the default one. You can do that from the Command Center under the Boot-option or simply edit it by hand. Remember to run *lilo* (as root) when you have saved the new /etc/lilo.conf. Finally, re-boot and if everything is OK you can simly remove the old kernel entries in /boot, although that's not necessary. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Your software source manager in Mandrake Control Centre will show you a list of defined sources. May I suggest one change to your script. You currently have 'urpmi --auto-select --auto --no-verify-rpms' which is going to automatically install the latest version of any package available on any of the sources. Some of the online sources such as Texstar contain the very latest bleeding edge versions of packages. Occasionally these are 'broken'. So you could wake up one day to discover something important no longer works. I prefer to use urpmi --auto-select --auto --no-verify-rpms --update This will only automatically update packages from sources tagged as 'update media' when you added them. So any official Mandrake update will take place automatically, while new Texstar and PLF packages can wait until I am ready for them. [newbie] GMO foods
In general, we know far too little about them. (i'm far from an expert on this topic)(but DO farm organically) I do know they are not allowed on certified organic farms in the US. They are approved in the U.S. by the FDA (food & drug admin.). BUT... they also approve of certain level of pesticides in people, and that is mostly guess work and a BIG gamble...There is too much we do not know. WE CAN work on drought resistant varieties thru more traditional methods of of plant breeding... In my personal belief, I'm much more inclined to argue for use of NON hybrid's, chiefly because one can use the seeds harvested to plant next years crop...IMO a great help for poor countries as they do not have to import expensive hybrids. In the circles I travel in, there is a growing movement to "heirloom" varities. This year I'm growing a heirloom tomato, called "stripey"...it is yellow with stripes, as supposed to be of SUPERIOR taste...(I'll let you know in a couple of weeks:) Of course, taste will VARY GREATLY, depending on the soil and climate in a given year. [newbie] best way of updating software
this is a long history that I will try to make shorter, but please don't piss me off. Linux is though enough for a brand new linux user like me. Following someone suggestions from de list I added a cron.daily file urpmi.cron, with the content that follows: #!/bin/sh urpmi.update -a urpmi --auto-select --auto --no-verify-rpms I thought I was really smart having this feature in my box when someone in the list wasn't sure that updating from "cooker" was a good idea. Literally to me cooker was a cooking pot, so I didn't even realize what I was going into. OK, after that I was still having the PGP signature problems and I used another tip from this list (Subject: Bad signatures) and I follow that reference: http://www.pclinuxonline.com/gpgkey.html The problem is that I'm still having troubles with bad signatures. My questions, I guess, are: 1) Is it safe to do that urpmi.cron in a box for real work, not for testing? Am I really using cooker in that file? 2) Could anybody give me 2 lines info about cooker and how to stay away from it when updating packages? 3) Are you sure this list is for brand new linux newbiers? I read almost all messages and I feel I'm getting so much partial info that I can see the big picture. Any advice will be apreciated. Rosario Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] update packages
Title: RE: [newbie] update packages I use a directory 'in/RPM' in my home directory to store incomming RPMs. I've added a source in 'Software Sources Manager': Type of sourece: Local Path: /home/msabin/in/RPM Then when I run 'Install Software' I choose to see packages "by repository" and there are my uninstalled downloads waiting to go. Is there a more elegant way? I came up with this scheme while in a hurry, and never bothered to work out another method. --Matthew -Original Message- From: Marco Verheul [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, July 28, 2003 9:50 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] update packages Hi, I downloaded the latest Evolution form Tekstar and i want to update my current version withthe new rpm.
