[newbie] java path for Konquerer
what should be the correct path to java for Konqueror web browser be so I can use chat rooms? mine is currently:/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03/lib/i386/libjava.so which only gives me a 'applet loading' screen for days. I know it's in the /lib/i386/ folder because thats the directory I set for Opera, and it works. Opera only needs the directory java is in , Konqueror requires you t point to the exact file which obviously isn't /libjava.so. I'd use Opera but I hate it. so please tell me which file I should point to in the /i386/ directory. There is a executive file named aw_robot or something but that doesn't seem to work, there are a bunch of .so files, I imagine it's one of them , but which one? It works flawlessly this way, and also keeps from getting the bootloader stuff already on the hard disk all messed up. It explains a bit more as to whats going on. In brief, if the firewall is turned off, then the inet connections become inoperable. When it is turned on things work. Thats a feature and "not" a bug. If this is a workstation behind an already configured firewall, then just allow everything. If not, then you'll have to configure some sort of rudamentary firewall. If you've got no services running other then maybe ssh to this machine, then when you turn the firewall on open the ports for the service you're running. Thats really all there is to it. I would suggest reading up on IP Tables a bit so you've got some idea of whats going on as opposed to relying solely a GUI config wizard. If you can find the packages try installing Bastille on your system. Its probably the easiest out there to configure, and once its done you just let it alone. -- Mark "If you have found a very wise man, then you've found a man that at one time was an idiot and lived long enough to learn from his own stupidity." If there's aren't any services being run on this machine then it doesn't matter. The firewall has to be at least enabled in some fashion in order for the inet connections to function correctly. Which is why the poster notices functionality when the firewall is turned on, and no functionality when the firewall is turned off. By far the easiest and least troublesome firewall app I've seen and have been using now since Mandrake 8.2 is Bastille. I've seen Shorewall, and a bunch of the others; and have in fact tried them out. I always came back to Bastille. The temp directory that I had specified was in a subdirectory under the system /tmp partition, but it's woefully low on space, at least to hold a DVD's worth of data (3.2Gb). Changing it to another partition, with more space, hasn't helped any, though. The puzzling thing here is that the new directory is reflected in K3b's configuration file, but the old directory is reflected in the growisofs section of the K3b debug output. [newbie] A few ACPI problems.
Okay, so I'm suddenly having a few problems with ACPI on my Compaq Presario 2190US notebook. It's worked fine before, except for the second problem. 1. My KDE battery meter is gone. I looked for the config GUI in the KDE settings, but it's not there. I then tried kacpi, thinking it was the same thing, but it was completely different, and didn't show in the system tray. How do I get this back? It worked fine up until yesterday when it suddenly disappeared. 2. I have no control over the fan. It's always running, and is quite loud. I looked in /proc/acpi/fan, but there are no files. Is there anything I can do about this? In Windows, the fan will stop usually. In Linux, it just keeps going. [newbie] Mandrake 10.0 Data DVD
Well, the Wrong medium type error is gone now, not sure exactly how that happened but it is certainly welcome. Has anyone else had a similar problem. I suspect that it has something to do with trying to mount a regular data CD first before trying to mount DVD media but I will experiment with it more to try to figure it out. I do love the new version though, I had an old DVD+RW that was unwritable for some strange reason, both under Windows and under Linux previously. Just for grins, I popped it in and tried to burn a backup to it. For stuff such as Mandrake 10 Community Editionwll not so much. (-: Just how long do you plan to live my friend? Theoretically you could use bit torrent on a dial up connection; but remember the size of the (for example) complete torrent for Mandrake 10 Community. 2.0 Giga Bytes. How long do you think that would take at a (theoretical) maximum download speed of 5 KB per second? On the other hand you can achieve the same effect (having the ISOs) using rsync instead, and with less pain involved. If you still have the ISOs from a previous version just copy and rename them to what you see here: ftp://sunsite.uio.no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrake/Mandrake/iso or here: ftp://ftp.rediris.es/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/iso Then open a terminal and run rsync against a mirror that supports it. The following is the command I use as me, not root. Change the directory path (the part after the space between /Mandrake/iso/ and /archive/backup and so on) to suit your own local environment: rsync -avrt --progress --delete --exclude MandrakeMove-i586.iso ftp.uninett.no::Mandrake/Mandrake/iso/ /archive/backup/nanook/downloads/Mandrakelinux-10.0-Community/ That's all one line. The reason the --exclude flag is in there is probably obvious, you don't need MandrakeMove. Or the md5sum.asc for it but I'm leaving the reader something to do for themselves. The reason(s) for using rsync instead of anything else are IMHO: you only actually download the differences between the files, so less (much) bandwidth and less (much) time involved; it's one way, download only. Sort of anyway, rsync reads everything on both ends but only downloads what's required to synchronize the directories. Rather than upload and download as with bit torrent. Again less bandwidth; Less chance of file corruption due to restarts. Maybe. [newbie] mono to stereo
I wanted to turn some mp3 files to .wav and then burn them, but I got an error when trying to burn the .wav files. Then I came to understand the reason why it happened: the .wav files were mono files. After a bit of googling I found what I was looking for $ sox monofile.wav -r 44100 -c 2 stereofile.wav I tried to create an alias, but it didn't work. Then I created my first script -- if it could be called a script. It is very simple, but it works. #!/bin/bash echo please enter the filename read name sox $name -r 44100 -c 2 stereofile.wav I hope someone will find this useful. Hello Charlie. Thanks for your suggestions, and sorry for the delay in replying. Things have been rather (no, VERY!) hectic here lately, and I haven't had time to do any further tests. I have now been able to have another look at it, and the best I can do is to have the Configuration/KDE/components/Spell checking set to: Dictionary: Aspell default Encoding: ISO8859-15 Client: Aspell and the KWord spell checking set to: Dictionary: Aspell default Encoding: ISO8859-15 Client: International Ispell. (If I change it to Aspell, it immediately goes back to Ispell). With these settings, I can spell check and incorrectly spelt words are corrected. However! Although American spellings are marked, the dictionary ignores them. (So, both color and colour are accepted). It's not perfect, but isn't too bad. I think I will leave it at this for the time being, as I don't know what else to try. If you come up with anything else, I'd like to hear about it. Many thanks again to you and Anne. CD 4 is only available as an ISO to club members. it does contain some important packages (internationalization, docs, devel packages, kernel source etc.) you can get the packages from ftp mirrors. if you want you can download them all and build the 4th cd yourself (or you could get a club membership) urpmq --media Installation\ CD\ 4\ \(x86\) --list -f | \ awk '{print $0 ".rpm"}' will give you a list of filenames you need to download. cheers, Alaa - -- ultimate_answer_t deep_thought(void) { sleep(years2secs(750)); return 42; } -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAVcC4vQ4s8A97qKQRAky0AJ4m/E8msXBCZyUsQut56B2IwzbYkACgmBgs 0BrwBrG1LaOcYYlH28JeuEw= =NPK5 -END PGP SIGNATURE- Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
