[newbie] Re: Where's my mail?
There are no junk controls set. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the mozilla companents from the CD's since this problem occured. I have just managed to use my parents Windows machine to read my email via webmail. After reading it, I decided to download the odd 4x messages I had selected to keep. I started kpp, logged on using my fresh install of Mozilla mail and waited to see the messages appear. Alas all I saw was the number received going up but no messages appearing in te Inbox or the subfolders. So now it brings me to a total of 190 unseen messages that I have been unable to read because a 'stable' release of Mozilla Mail supplied on the installation CD's doesn't work like it should!!! Considering I am expecting at least 5 VERY important messages regarding my pending employment, this shit doesn't go down well! I ask the question again, Where ie which folder etc/ether are my UNREAD messages that I have downloaded over the last 2 days? Can they be recovered so that I can read them or should I just give up on something I have supported for over a year, linux, and move onto a more 'stable' and user friendly system like Windows. Where can I find information on what happened to the downloaded messages? sorry for the rant but i am REALLY pissed off with linux/s right now. I am unemployed and really need the work one of those emails could have been about. I cannot afford to have my machine looked at by an 'expert' linux fundi coz I can't afford it, period. Your help is appreciated and I'll try to get the 9.2 release tomorrow hoping it will fix the mail error. Somehow though I don't think so as not even an uninstall and reinstall of the current version helped. -- Hylton Conacher - Licenced ex-Windows user Registered Linux user # 229959 at http://counter.li.org Using Linux Mandrake 9.1 with KDE 3.1 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Whilst I intend to agree with Joe on this with regards to netiquette, I do not mind doing it for a short time and possibly having to resend some emails to the list address as opposed to lanman. With the current slump in world IT budgets, courtesy 9/11, and the huge unemployment rate, I say lanman you keep your reply address as your email address, for a while anyway, just to keep your clients happy. I am sure he could circumvent this problem by using another email address for his email list or having his own email server with two email addresses. With 250 clients it should be affordable, but until he does find a solution or Mandrake forcibly changes his message reply to reflect the list he is replying to, I do not think it is too much for us as list members to put up with for a little while. In short lanman your reply to inability does annoy me, I am pretty sure there is a workable solution to all parties concerned but i am willing to put up with it for commerce sake. -- Hylton Conacher - Licenced ex-Windows user Registered Linux user # 229959 at http://counter.li.org Using Linux Mandrake 9.1 with KDE 3.1 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Mozilla Mail filters
I am using Mozilla 1.3 and was previously using Mozilla 1.0. I created many email filters under 1.0 that where consequently imported the 1.3 install. No problem so far..but I am unable to view/change the details of any of the filters or even add a new one. I can click on new but I cannot add/edit filter criteria, only the rules as to what to do with the message when the criteria are met. I've included a screenshot FYI, but I am not sure if the list will allow it. [newbie] Lilo start entries
Hi, Just wanting to improve my linux knowledge and so When I boot I use LiLo to display as I also have a Win95 OS HDD in one of the IDE chains. Lilo presents me with the following listing: Linux Linux-nonfb failsafe dos floppy I know that selecting the linux entry will boot my normal linux, the dos entry will boot up the Win95 OS HDD and the floppy entry will alllow me to boot off floppy. What about failsafe and linux-nonfb? I would asume that failsafe is very similar to the Windows Safe Mode but the linux-nonfb meaning escapes me. Any ideas and of course what files to edit using a root Kwrite editor? I know I can edit the entries in the MCC but I would prefer to do it via the CLI. The client-side doesn't mind receiving a couple of OT messages but unfortunately the action must be implemented by the sender of the message. If the OT gets too frequent; as it sometimes does on one of the lists I'm subscribed to, I just activate an "OT pop filter" in K-Mail and it never leaves the mail server. Wouldn't that be nice if the POP mail system could do that! In my experience, using Netscape and Mozilla mail, I either download all the messages from the ISP or none. > Usually (once a week or thereabouts) I'll use the ISP's web-mail interface and delete the 'download later' messages after browsing through them for any interesting tidbits. I'd never characterize Anne as any sort of nuisance. The occasional OT on this list is nearly always fun; at least until some "list Nazi" gets a "wild hair across his arse." The 'wild hair' was actually across my brain and wallet when I realized I had just spent a fortune downloading a whole lot of OT messages. Quite. I don't mind people requesting that a discussion should be continued elsewhere, but they should be polite about it, especially when some of the participants have "paid their dues" on this list enough to be allowed to indulge in a little silliness on occasion. Hear ,Hear Total agreement. If I recall rightly, the whole thing started with a question about KDE or GNOME - that is one subject we should definitely ban ;-) CONTINUED discussion needs banning yes, as I mean, how long/many messages can it take to convince someone it is up to personal preference. That was one. Another was a (sort of) reference to a tag at the end of a post mentioning that I was going to see Star Trek Nemesis on opening night. I dropped the subject in deference to others that hadn't seen it yet, but wanted to, so I wouldn't spoil it for them. I am sure some Trekkers are glad you didn't spoil it for them. I haven't seen the archives for months - I never see any link to them and can't remember the url Anne If you use Mozilla or Phoenix (don't know about NS7) and haven't been using custom keyword searching, now's the time to learn. Just go to any site that has a search (like the newbie archives at http://www.mail-archive.com/newbie@linux-mandrake.com/), enter a dummy search phrase like "coffee" (no quotes) and bookmark the results page. Next, go to Bookmarks > Mangage bookmarks, and look at the properties of the bookmark you just made. Locate the word "coffee" in the URL and replace it with "%s" (no quotes). In the keyword field, enter a short phrase you'll remember; I use "newb". Now when I enter "newb boot hang cups" in the address bar I go directly to the results page of a Mandrake newbie search on "boot hang cups". Pretty cool! I also have custom searches for Freshmeat.net, rpmfind.net, m-w.com, sourceforge, amazon.com, LDP, google (web, groups, images, and news) and a few others. [newbie] restarting Dead mice
Hi all, I have two machines, a Win95 and mdk 8.0 machine networked together via UTP cables and sharing a monitor, keyboard and mouse through a switch box. Sometimes, after working on my linux box I need to use I switch on my Windows machine and switch the switch box across to enable the mouse, keyboard and monitor. No problem so far. When I switch the switch box back, as I want to return to linux, the mouse cursor is displayed but cannot move. The keyboard works fine. I wondered if there was a command to issue on a terminal to re-enable/restart the mouse. I have so far found out that by logging off the mouse functionality is restored and I wondered if there was a command to 'reset' the mouse without having to logoff? Solutions appreciated muchly -- === Hylton Conacher - Registered Linux user # 229959 Licenced Windows user Using Linux Mandrake 8.0, KDE 2.1.1 on a 2.4.3-20mdk#1 kernel === Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Workgroups in linux?
Have sort of sorted out a dual PC, 1 dual boot linux and Win and the other linux, connection problems. Both are networked together and provided I am using linux on both machines I get positive feedback from the ping command. On checking the hostname on both machines I can confirm there are no errors there. However if the dualboot system is booted into Win95 and the other box into linux I then cannot access the Windows hard drive. I am thinking that as they both have the same subnet and IP's are 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 perhaps the workgroup 'feature' on Windows is playing a role. How do I configure/view the workgroup under linux? -- === Hylton Conacher - Registered Linux user # 229959 Licenced Windows user Using Linux Mandrake 8.0, KDE 2.1.1 on a 2.4.3-20mdk#1 kernel === Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Linux User Groups
Hi Bill, I am a little far away to attend your LUG being in South Africa but I would like to make some suggestions. I would suggest setting up two mailing lists, one to be a lesson distribution one and the other to be a chat one for the lessons i.e. the students cannot post to the lesson distribution list but can to the chat list. Have a strictly controlled lesson structure and distribute the new lesson for the week once a week. Only those who have requested to join the class will receive the lessons and you can set the term times up so that people wanting to join can submit a request to join and they will then be added into the next running of the course. I know there is a class available at the moment called blt-something but the moderator, Henry White, has banned me from ever joining his class again because I commented on his non-distribution of the lessons i.e. he had a site that students had to go and visit to learn and I cannot afford to be online that long so that is why I asked him to send it via email. Anyway, I would love to be able to learn where Linux stores certain config files and how to install new software etc. You need to make your lessons distribution non-specific as possible but do mention what distro the lessons are made from and therefore what distro you suggest. Personally I'd go with Mandrake as it should be fairly easy for Windows users (I am still a part Windows user and thinker) to use but there are some snafu situations. Next thing is cost. The course would need to be free to internet users but maybe charged for at the LUG as it is hands on personal stuff. My 10c's worth. I look forward to receiving a notification that your free classes are going to start and to sign up via the [newbie] mailing list. -- === Hylton Conacher on KDE 2.1.1 on kernel 2.4.3-20mdk#1 Registered Linux user # 229959 on Mandrake 8 on an i686 (AMD 1 Ghz K7 mobo Licenced Windows user and thinker === Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I hadn't played with Software Manager much and so I ventured into it. I added two source areas, namely ftp://rpmfind.net and /mnt/cdrom. I assumed that with these two added Software Manager would scan the CD I placed in the drive for RPM's and populate the trees. I clicked on rebuild lists and saw that it didn't even go to the CD-ROM to have a look for RPM's so I went back to the list of sources. The two entries I had added had disappeared! [newbie] full Distribution on a floppy disk?
Hi all, I am wanting to find out if there is a distribution available that will fit on a floppy disk but still be able to send email without having to use the host machines MTA i.e. just use the Internet connection but not any software on the machine? Also would a minimalist GUI also be able to be included? I am aware of the root boot disk and have heard of Peanut Linux and I wonder if any of these or others can do what I want? I would basically like to be able to insert the disk into a Windows machine and reboot the machine so that it boots my OS of choice i.e. Linux from the floppy disk. If I need to send myself an email at all then I could use the MTA (Message Transfer Agent) on the floppy as opposed to having to use Microsoft mail. Any suggestions or query strings I could submit to google? Under Mdk Linux you edit a hidden file called .bashrc in your home directory. My .bashrc or .profile for Unix looks like this, so you can see what the command for setting up an alias looks like. # .bashrc # Source global definitions if [ -r /etc/bashrc ]; then . /etc/bashrc alias dir='ls -al|more' fi > Also have a look at this post I got when I was changing my own .bashrc: Here's what to do...in command line mode, you have (or you can create) a file called either ".profile" or ".bashrc"--either will work I think. .profile is standard on ALL Unix systems so I'm just used ot it. This file governs lots of things with your environment basically. You can set environment variables in it etc. Aliases are your "made up" commands that do something. They can just be modification on existing commands or entirely new things. For example, as a DOS user if you wanted a "dir" command to do basically the same thing as "ls -al", you'd put the following line in your .profile-- alias dir='ls -al' save it, log out of console mode, get back in and type "dir" (without the "s in console mode) and tada you should have what you want. For root, I put the following in .profile-- alias rm='rm -i' That's it. Now when I do a "rm" command in root, I get a little confirm message. [newbie] where to configure keyboard mapping?
Hi all, I would like to use 'Shift-Insert' as the paste command as it stems from its use in my Windows days. Where can I find the option to configure key combinations to use for the paste action under KDE? [newbie] Multimedia-v.low sound volume?
Hi all, I am having a very weird problem with my sound running a AMD K7 onboard sound card, the Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI The problem is that even though the volume is at 100% on the controls the audio coming out of the speakers can only just be heard. I have been able to determine that there is nothing wrong with the speakers as they work AOK on my Windy box. I have tried many things with the help of Dave Jones but still have not been able to solve the error. I have tried: Aumix, Timidity, CDPlayer, Arts Builder, KDE Media Player, Midi and Karaoke Player, Midi synth, Sound Mixer, arts control, xmms. I have also tried running the following from a root terminal: sndconfig, kmix, gmix, umix and xmix? Three of the *mix ones commands could not be found and the kmix, I think had a nice GUI with all the levels showing at 80%, all the green lights are on and one red light on. There are three coloured holes on the panel which accept a 3.5mm jack plug namely, a pink one with a mic next to it, a blue one with headphones next to it and a green one with what looks like a speaker next to it. I am using the blue headphones socket. Any ideas where the fault could be or do I need to pack it back in the box and return it to the store and tell them I'm too fffing stupid to own a PC? -- == Hylton Conacher on KDE Registered Linux user # 229959 on Mandrake 8 on an AMD 1 Ghz K7 Licenced Windows 95 user More hardware info on request == Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] modem errors-Solved 'partly'
Thanks to all the people who posted about my modem errors. I am now not receiving errors when I connect up although there are a few things listed at the bottom of this email I would appreciate you looking into, if anyone feels like helping there. The solution was obtained from the cmd 'cat messages' in the /var/log directory. Just before the modem hung up the files said that the username and or password were incorrect and that was stopping me being authenticated. After trying several option I settled on making my username the same as my email address, although it apparently isn't according to my ISP. Darn modem connected up first time and I was able to surf the Net. Items which still need attention are: 1) How I can get modem lights showing my modem is active. I have searched he mdk software manager for most things to do with lights, modems etc. but have not been able to confirm or deny it is or isn't installed. If it was installed, how would I get it to display when the modem is in use? - SOLVED 2) Why does the modem not show up under the Mandrake Control Centre hardware tab under modems? How do I get it to show there? modem is an ISA USR Sportster 56k with no jumpers attached and PnP disabled in the BIOS and running on Mdk 8.0. [newbie] detecting an internal ISA modem
Just enquired on the price of an external USR modem and was quoted about R800. Before I end up having to fork out this dough I wondered how to make the system detect new hardware i.e. the ISA USR modem, eventhough it doesn't display it under the Mandrake Control Centre when I am logged as as either a user or root. Tnx to Ed who suggested I try the command of'/proc/pci|/home/hylton/proc-pci'. Turns out on opening the box that the USR modem is in an ISA slot. I tried to use the command but replace the PCI with ISA and all I got was something about command not found. Before I have to cough dough, please tell me how to get this working. [newbie] conflict between modem and Com 2?
I have recently purchased a new machine and have had to take it back to the store as the modem is giving me hassles. The machine is an AMD Thunderbird 1Ghz with what I believe, or have been told is, a Creative modem 56kb/s in it. I have paid for the machine but feel that as they knew it was going to only have Linux (Mdk 8) on it that they should have made sure the hardware supplied i.e. the modem worked under Linux without having to disable Com 2. Can anyone confirm/deny that the conflict is there? Surely a brand new machine needn't have part of its hardware, Com 2, disabled for it to work with a modem? Is the make of the modem the problem i.e. is it a winmodem or semi winmodem? Comments please as I am due to pick up the machine tomorrow or perhaps later today. OK. Tnx Franki for giving me a smack around the ears for trying to put a monster graphics card in an old machine. Randy, the main reason is that eventhough I am running 800x600 on a 17" monitor and can see the whole screen perfectly, the full graphics under X do not display of the Mandrake Software Manager i.e. the screen doesn't refresh after closing the 'You have not configured a security update source yet' box. I have managed to locally source an 8 Mb SiS PCI card ordered and I wonder if all SiS cards are Mandrake Linux compatible? I sure as hell hope that this video card will do the job as opposed to replacing the motherboard and processor. The postage on overseas mail and the risk of static on the free card will probably cost more in mail fees than the card I am getting anyway for R350 ~ $41. I don't want to take the card that Gary offered as I don't know its compatibility and don't know if I will upgrade to 8.1 when it is released. Thanks all. Franki, wish I was joking. Unfortunately I am unemployed right now and the only machine I have besides a 486 is this P I I got 5 years ago. The software manager is not being displayed completely under this video card and I therefore want to increase my video card. I figured the Voodoo 3 would be a good call but need some advice on the CPU drain on the P I 100 Mhz with 48 Mb of RAM. I cannot afford to buy a new system being out of work so I am looking at increasing the display to the max given the hardware I have. P.S.: A new machine will more than likely set me back R7000 whereas a video card will only be R950 so it is the lesser of the two. > 2. Re: [newbie] USA this and USA that,w here did the newbie list go?
I will agree on the fact that some families will not be complete again and that Linux will still be there but... In the circle of life all life has a lifespan. In this case those people on the planes was their time. No matter how bad it is, shit happens and we will just have to live with it. In my country whenever I drive my car and arrive at a stop street I am unsure whether I will make it to tomorrow as most of the car hijackings leave the original driver dead. When I go and have coffee or drink at a local pub I realize that it could be my last as who knows if a car bomb is going to go off when I walk out. As I said, shit happens and we just have to live each day to the best of our current ability. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] Attention for everybody
On a last and final note I think it is more than likely LA as it is Los Angeles which means, I think, Without Angels. Re: [newbie] Linux not loading
Hylton's 0.02c Make sure Me was installed first as if it is after Linux it will overwrite the MBR and therefore it will not give you Lilo as a bootloader to select Linux. Tell us what distro you are installing as well. > Paul Chandler wrote: > > Hi, > > i have installed linux and winMe at the same time. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Movement of Windows Netscape files to Linux
I have managed to set-up Netscape under Linux and wonder if I start using it if I can add messages to existing folders and more folders by copying them from Windows mnt directory without overwriting the existing contents of the folders that are there i.e. I currently have 26 items in my sent items under windows and perhaps there will be 2 or 3 sent messages in Linux. I would like to 'copy' the items in the Windows Sent items folder without overwriting the existing contents. I am aware that this can be done via a drag and drop approach but I have over 200 Windows folders that may or may not be created under Linux and I do not want to lose any of the email or folders I have created either under Windows or Linux. Any CLI ideas? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://.mandrakestore.com
