- front-end per i dizionari di Babylon (babytrans, ...) che traducono singole parole;

a trados. Però, non sono ancora riuscito a provarlo.

Ciao Corrado,

ci stiamo incamminando nella direzione giusta. Vedi l'output di echo $PS1
(\s-\v\$) ? Bene.

E' possibile sapere cosa passa su quella porta?
Inoltre è possibile chiudere selettivamente una porta, senza sapere quale

Right-clicking bought up a menu of some basic apps and a few did work but
it was nothing like looking/using KDE within the window. Being very
unfamiliar with fully using a console for everything this doesn't help me
much. If I sit infront of KDE screen and use a VNC window to look at the
Winblowz laptop running ME it appears fine and functions as if you were
sitting infront of the laptop. Getting it to view another linux box using
KDE is a different beast though and nothing achieved yet.

You're most likely getting mwm or twm as the window manager - so you're
going to have to double check all your configurations so that KDE is the
default wm - for both the regular system AND for VNC.

KDE is the default on all 6 machines. I never run any other wm here so I can't
see why it won't use KDE when it's added to the VNC config file. If I follow
the example config files as shown on the VNC site and in the readme file to
the letter, VNC still defaults to twm. Are the settings in this config file
copied to another part of the system on the first running of VNC and have
subsequently been over-riding the config file after I have changed it, and if
so, doesn't that defeat the object of having a config file? I made the
changes to the file, saved it and even tried a complete power-down of the
system but still end up with twm.

 Hi Anne,
Here's the article. NYTIMES is a free registration, but I realize

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks for that, Mike. It is very interesting, and, I think, has some very
fair insights. A short while ago I took a part-time MSc in Information
Systems at the local university. There were not a high proportion of girls
there, but the makeup of the group is interesting. There were 3 or 4 women
past their first youth (and you could say that again for me g) and the
rest were young Asian girls. I know the recent climate of grants from Europe
to certain areas made it a cheaper option for Asian girls than for most
English girls, but I don't think finance was the option. The older white
English women were for the main looking a either a career change or a career
advancement. Presumably the young Asian girls had specific goals also. I
think it is true to say that on the whole women undertake serious study for a
particular end.

One module that was compulsory in my course was Networks. I really looked
forward to this. I had built the home lan and administered a Novell Netware
lan at work, and hoped to gain a great deal more insight into networks
generally. Stupidly, I had even thought that there would be some practical
work involved. Instead there was a series of lectures that quoted verbatim
from the prescribed reference book, going into great detail on layers of
transport protocol. Now this is the sort of thing that I am interested to
read about, to get an idea of how it works, but in truth could see no reason
for the stress upon it. Yes, it aids understanding, but it appears to have
no practical application in my life.

Perhaps this is a key to getting girls more interested. Show them an
application that they would enjoy, then tell them that with a little help and
a day or so set aside, they too could have that. Show a teenage girl that
she could easily burn her own compilation CD - all her favourite tracks on
one CD - if only she had a cd burner on her computer. When you've got her
interested, put the screwdriver in her hand. DO NOT do it for her. Talk her
through, both what she is doing and why. Talking of master and slave drives
will not be more than she can understand, yet it would bore her to tears if
she had to hear about it in a classroom.

Girls tackle technical issues with a stuborn zeal if they can see something in
it that they want to achieve, but why bother if it doesn't do anything for
them? So they have to be shown that they can have positive benefits from
learning. It isn't 'cool' to be an egghead, but it's cool to have your own
compilation cd.

Just my thoughts.

I seem to have lost Stephen's original post on this, so perhaps he'd post
  the
link again. Anyway, I did read it, and interesting reading it made. For
those who didn't see it, it concerns the reasons for the lack of women in
computing in general and linux in particular, and what can be done about
it. This group is unusual in not falling into just about every trap on
  the list.

Two things that have really bugged me from time to time -

My husband, being totally uninterested in computing but kind hearted,
from time to time has taken me to computer shows - where I was usually
looking from the point of view of our small business. I would ask a
serious question, and the rep would immediately turn to David to answer.
  This is not
an isolated example, it happened over and over again.

The other thing is that, womanlike, when I have a problem I want to
discuss it. By verbalising it I often see the way out of the problem,
but if I don't, I want further discussion that will help me learn. I am
sure it is with the best of intentions, but the truth is that if this is
in front of a computer the man (and it is always a man - because there
are so few women interested g) takes over the keyboard and just does
it. I have learned nothing, because it happened quickly and without
  explanation. With no prior
unix experience I tried to learn linux about three years ago, thinking my
son-in-law could help me, but I soon gave up, largely because of this.

I think I would probably have given up again, if it were not for this
list - so thanks, folks, for your patient explanations, even when it has
taken two or three goes to make me understand what's happening.

  Anne

the most intresting thing is, in business, I am willing to bet, that more
Females spend more time in front of computers (inputing data) than men.
Assomeone that started BBS chatting in 1992, I found back then that there
were more women than men that could type fast enough to chat with. By the
time the WEB had come around to everyone, the balance had changed, more
guys (and perves) had found their way to the keyboard. I still think that
women make up the bulk of computer USERS.

I think you're right there. But again, it comes down to the fact that women
use computers to achieve a particular end. There are fewer women who, like
me, have a fascination for the whole business of computing. So if we want
more women in computing we have to tie it in to personal satisfaction.

OK got beta 1 installed on here and trying it out. Found a bug in the

report the
bug but i get:

Software error:

Bugzilla is currently broken. Please try again later. If the problem
persists,
please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] The error you should quote is: Can't

For help, please send mail to the webmaster ([EMAIL PROTECTED]),
giving
this error message and the time and date of the error.

SO. how fun is that? LOL. I'll try back later. Anyone else
have a
problem with drakx? I found that the dark blue box on the right side of
the
screen where everything happens was either too small, or the font they
were
using for it was too large because the bottom of it got cut off.
(couldn't
see the OK / Cancel buttons on some of the screens because they were
down too
far, the package selection list didn't fit in the box, etc). I've
installed
mdk enough times to know where everything was, luckily. So far, though,
the
prospects seem good as far as installation goes. It seems to have
detected
all my hardware correctly but time and experience will tell.

Hope y'all have fun with it.

Thanks, Tod.

I've installed 0.8.8 but can't see a lot of difference: one problem I

X-CDRoast (0.98alpha13), and on the fly, can only copy data cds. Copying

 From: usr/share/doc/xcdroast-0.98alpha13/FAQ

 12. What about audio-quick copy?
Currently quick-copy (copying without buffering any tracks on harddrive)
only works for pure data-CDs. We are working on audio-quick copy, so
that the final version of X-CD-Roast 0.98 should offer this feature.
(The real problem is, that the cdrtools do not yet support that feature,
 so X-CD-Roast can't utilize it.)

You can try with k3b. (I don't have tested it.)

   Suerte.

K3b works just great for me. It is also a lot more intiutive to use IMO than

all I could get was a window with a blue background and a white
background X console window up. I believe this is the default desktop
setting VNC comes with. Right-clicking bought up a menu of some basic
apps and a few did work but it was nothing like looking/using KDE
within the window. Being very unfamiliar with fully using a console for
everything this doesn't help me much. If I sit infront of KDE screen
and use a VNC window to look at the Winblowz laptop running ME it
appears fine and functions as if you were sitting infront of the
laptop. Getting it to view another linux box using KDE is a different
beast though and nothing achieved yet.

You're most likely getting mwm or twm as the window manager - so you're
going to have to double check all your configurations so that KDE is the
default wm - for both the regular system AND for VNC.

KDE is the default on all 6 machines. I never run any other wm here so I
can't see why it won't use KDE when it's added to the VNC config file. If I
follow the example config files as shown on the VNC site and in the readme
file to the letter, VNC still defaults to twm. Are the settings in this
config file copied to another part of the system on the first running of
VNC and have subsequently been over-riding the config file after I have
changed it, and if so, doesn't that defeat the object of having a config
file? I made the changes to the file, saved it and even tried a complete
power-down of the system but still end up with twm.

I'm coming into this thread a bit late so apologies if this has already been
suggested.

VNC server will start the window manager declared in the ~/.vnc/xstartup of
the user the vncserver was started from. (You are editing the correct
xstartup file are you?)

If the last line in the file is
/usr/bin/startkde
then KDE will be the desktop used. Works for me anyway.

Re: [newbie] Mozilla locks my machine during downloads

Set the Primary DNS to the XP machine, the secondary DNS to your ISP's
primary DNS, put the IP of the XP machine in your /etc/hosts file, set
Mozilla/Netscape (Under ADVANCED / HTTP NETWORKING) to Enable Keep-Alive
and Enable Pipelining (under the Direct Connection Options).

This saga keeps going.

Today, when receiving my emails (only Evolution was connected), the
connection to the LAN was lost. For a couple of minutes I couldn't even
ping the gateway.

I tried a few times with the same outcome: I couldn't get the mails and
needed to start all over. I realized that the only way to get the
connection back was by pinging the gateway. It took 2 or 3 minutes of
pinging to get it back.

So I decided to hook the Linux laptop directly to the ADSL modem,
without firewall or NAT. No protection whatsoever. I thought it might be
a faulty network cable or even the hub.

But then again, the same problem. And again, I needed to ping the
default gateway provided by the ISP to get the connection back.

So I suppose there must be some faulty interaction between Mandrake and
the laptop NIC.

Just came up to my mind to try this running Linux within VMWare in a XP
box. It might me the NIC driver. I will report tonight. I got some
business meetings now.

That's exactly my case. So, to avoid this problem, mobile workers

Actually it is the other way round. Running a mail server can help you when
you are mobile.
If you try to send a mail via your ISPs mail server when you are not connected
directly to their network, it will usually not work because the ISPs mail
server will reject attempts to relay mails from outside their network
(another anti spam measure)

However if you have a mail server at home you can configure it to accept
mails from your mobile computer no matter where you are (with adequate
security such as SMTP over SASL), and then your mails can be forwarded to
your ISPs mail server.

RE: [newbie] adding Creative cd-writer

2003-01-13 Per discussione Tony S. Sykes
I had this recently and Anne helped me out. Here is what you need.
You need to change your /etc/lilo.conf. Where you have append in your
main image

image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hda1
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append=quiet devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi

include the hdc=ide-scsi as in mine. Next it is your fstab.

Change you /dev/hdc to /dev/scd0 and then reboot.
This is what I did and it did eventually work. There may be an easier or
better way, but this worked for me.

Tony.

Subject: [newbie] adding Creative cd-writer

Hi Listers !

I have added a cd-writer to my computer, which is running ML9.
The problem is that I can't get cdrecord to see my cd-writer.Here's my
last
attempt:
[root@localhost root]# cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord 1.11a32 (i586-mandrake-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg
Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot open
SCSI
driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you
are
root.

I can see it labelled 'cd-burner' in the Mandrake Control Center- Mount
points.

Here's what cat/etc/fstab shows:

[root@localhost root]# cat /etc/fstab
/dev/hda6 / ext3 defaults 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
none /mnt/cdrom supermount
dev=/dev/hdd,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0
none /mnt/cdrw supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=auto,ro,--,umask=0 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount
dev=/dev/fd0,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,umask=0 0

/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

The Creative CD-Writer is as Master and the CD-Rom as slave.

Kscd is not playing cd's anymore. I don't know how to change to symbolic
link
so that it can play music cd's.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I'm running ML9.0 on an SV24 with a DVD-rom and Hauppage WinTV card as an entertainment system.
I've put 512MB and a 1.1GHz Celeron in it.

It's more than adequate for replacing my TV, tuner, CD Player and adding DVD playback to the living room.

My wife runs Star Office in her Windows PC and prefers it on the SV24 under Linux as it's much stabler and faster (on comparable equipment)

Mandrake figured out everything including the TV/Tuner card on the first go.

Some bumbling operator (me) messed up the install by trying to test too many DVD playback and AVI recording and sound-processing applications at the same time, but my wife bought me my own SV25 to play with so I'd leave the (her) entertainment system alone.

I've been recommending the system to anyone who wants a good small system.

Josenildo, here's some additional advice that I copied from
my *tips'n'tricks list* ( thanks to Derek for this !) :

This is a common problem. You need to ensure that your
user, the cdwriter,
and all the cd applications have the same group
permissions.

1/Create a group called 'cdwriter' using Userdrake and put
any users who are
to burn CD's in that group. (It may already exist)

2/ You then need to give cdwriter group privileges for the
following
applications (all in /usr/bin) If any of these apps are
missing install them
from RPM.
cdrecord
cdda2wav
cdparanoia
mkisofs
readcd
You can do this using konqueror. Just open
KmenuApplicationFileToolsFileManager(SuperUserMode)
Find the files you want to change the permissions of, right
click, select
'Permissions' and set the group name to be cdwriter

3/ Put the CD-RW in the cdwriter group by editing the
permissions of /dev/scd0

You can test your cd burner by opening a user terminal and
typing
cdrecord --scanbus
If it finds your CD writer then cd burning should work.

Anyone have an idea on how I can open Netscape without closing all

Hi Mike,

Both Netscape and Mozilla use the same user directory, .mozilla, to do their
thing when they're running. ergo, when you had Mozilla running and started
Netscape it appeared as though another instance of Mozilla was running.
When, in fact, it was actually Netscape.

The way to get around this is to setup a seperate profile for Netscape so that
it isn't looking at your Mozilla dir, or the files contained therein. Once
you've done this you shouldn't have this problem again.

Thanks for the reply, Mark. Actually, I already had a separate identity
for Netscape, but never got a chance to select it. I open a Mozilla
browser using the menu and select the Mike-Mz identity. In another
desktop I then try to open Netscape from the menu. No chance to choose
Mike-Ns identity because a new Mozilla window opens immediately. If I
go back to the menu and select Mozilla to open a second browser a dialog
box opens saying that Mike-Mz is in use and to select another identity.
I then choose Mike-Ns and something strange happens. The new browser
opened is Mozilla 1.2.1(checked under HelpAbout Mozilla), _but_ it has
a _modern_ theme, not the classic which I use with Mozilla. What is
that all about?

I see that both identities are in /home/mike/.mozilla and the only thing
under /home/mike/.netscape is an empty plugins folder.

Any other thoughts?

Mike

[newbie] xawtv fractured screen

Does anyone else have this problem? After watchting TV (happens randomly) in
full screen, switching back to windowed shows the desktop as a bunch of long,
horizontal rectangles. I can still follow the mouse around and read a single
line of text if I find the top of a window and move it around.

Logging out (CTRL-ALT-BKSP) and restarting x sometimes works, but most of the
time, my consoles don't work anymore and the only solution is to shutdown or
hit the reset button.

I have a nVidia GeForce2 MX 400 AGP card and Mandrake 9.0
I'm running Mandrake's nv driver since xawtv doesn't work with nVidia's

Not yet, bit afraid of loosing what I already have :)

If you can not get it done any other way stick CD1 in and rerun the
 Mdk installation as an expert/upgrade.
You do not need to select any pkgs and can skip network and printer
 set-up.
You can then let the installer configure and set your card.
The whole process takes about 15 min.

Is this definately safe? I dont want to loose any data. I suppose I just don't

This might call for a kernel recompile so as to ensure that the SCSI

either a recompile of the kernel, or a reinstall of the OS, it worked

It' safe I used it when switching between nvidia a ati cards, though you

It wouldn't. You need a user account on your host machine, with login and

users set up as samba users, again making sure that the password is identical
to the windows password - and don't forget that it's case sensitive.

Anne if Flash is working in konq but not mozilla/Netscape then it simply means
you do not have the Flash plugin and class file installed in your
/usr/lib/mozilla-1.1/plugins folder (or whichever folder Netscape uses) just
copy the libflashplayer.so and ShockwaveFlash.class files into the plugins
folder and restart mozilla/netscape

You're going to want to modify your lib path statement to include the

then run ldconfig to rebuild the cache...that should work for ya then.

[newbie] M9.1beta1 install

2003-01-13 Per discussione John Richard Smith
I've just had a very trying experience trying to install this.

1) ps2 mouse scrole wheel not detected at all, hardly important though.

2) no /swap partition detected

3) Bootloader refused non install , insisted on being installed

4) refused opportunity to create boot disc

5) upon reboot , found lilo had not been installed after all, though
it certainlyleft you the impression it had.

6) upon reboot old M9.0 lilo and /etc/lilo.conf presents for booting, but,

7) fsck M9.0 completed, but,

8) fsck M91beta1 fails, with error message,

repair filesystem 2# fsck /dev/hda7 (M91beta)
fsck ext2:filesystem unsupported feature(s) (/dev/hda7)
e2fsck:get newer version of e2fsck ,
repair system : yes enter
y
y
y
y
y
etc etc

have to do , Alt-SysRq -b to get it to reboot,

first I try reinstalling M9.0's lilo again, no luck, same result,

so eventually after trying failsafea, nonfb, and many such efforts,
I resirt to and f1 job on M9.0 cd1 and after getting root privelages
I format /dev/hda7 , and she reboots normally.

So what's with this e2fsck:get newer version of e2fsck ,

and what should I try next ?

I'm back on M9.0 desktop, with a formatted /dev/hda7

Anne if Flash is working in konq but not mozilla/Netscape then it simply

just copy the libflashplayer.so and ShockwaveFlash.class files into the

No go, Derek. I found the plugins in /usr/local/netscape/plugins, so I copied

The users have those nice processor and network interface monitoring
tools. Where does one find those for KDE/Gnome/Fluxbox (since I can't
make up my mind, and I am still trying to figure out how to configure
fluxbox). Along with location, could you also provide the location of
the installation and configuration of the tools.

Mine is gkrellm--it should be on your cd's. I start mine using the
command gkrellm -w. The -w puts it in the slit or dock as it's
called in Window Maker. I have it start automatically when Fluxbox loads,
sorry but I don't know how to do that in KDE or Gnome.

To configure, just right-click the top/near the border or hit F1.

I believe Derek's are dock apps--and they should be on the cd's as well.
Or, check dockapp warehouse: http://www.bensinclair.com/dockapp/.

 Todd,

how did you get past the glibc problem?

Funny you should ask, Mark. I hosed my system once trying to
upgrade all those packages. I'm running an old version of ROX (1.2.1).
Getting the latest version is really what's calling me to move to 9.0,
but I'm thinking I can hold out until 9.1

 Hi Todd,

A funny thing happened today. just shortly after I sent that message I
finished downloading the last of the packages I needed to satisfy those
dependencies from cooker, and the install went flawlessly. glibc and
all. first time I've ever seen that happen. And it was on a laptop to
 boot!

Mark,

You did that on 8.2? Did you upgrade to GTK2.0+ too?

[newbie] mplayer gui

2003-01-13 Per discussione Len Lawrence
Have now got xine, ogle and mplayer installed and running under 8.2 on
my Athlon 2200 with G-Force 2 card, thanks to urpmi and PLF (urpmi
really rocks!), the first time ever for mplayer. One problem, which
may have been discussed in the list already, is a slight jerkiness in
the display, which I assume has something to do with using the generic
video driver rather than Nvidia's own. It happens with all three
programs whereas xine and ogle have always run very smoothly on my old
500 MHz Pentium III with the Voodoo 3 2000 card and Mandrake 8.1.

Anyway, that is not the question. Does the mplayer gui work for
anybody? It blows up my computer; a nasty clunk from the hard drive,
a BSOD, and an empty error box, then nada. Forced to reboot at that
stage. Tried gmplayer and gui=yes in the config file. Both cause a
problem.

Yes, it works here under LM 9.0, and worked before with 8.2, 8.0 and
even before that if I can remember correctly. I don't personally se it
though, but my girlfriend does...

Maybe the difference is that I build it myself, instead of installing
pre-compiled binaries which aren't suited to my system. There are long
and large warnings all over mplayer about binaries, and although they do
have a link now to some rpm's now, they still advise everyone to compile
it themselves. I would suggest this too. MPlayer is just too
system-sensitive, but in a good way as it provides a great, stable, fast
running media player;-)

I have a P3 800mh/z, but even on my P1 233mh/s I was sort-of able to
watch a DivX file ... without too my audio delay and stuttering frames.
Yeah it wasn't what I call a success, but it ran well still.

Tried gmplayer and gui=yes in the config file. Both cause a problem.

I don't think this is your problem. If you start from a console with
`gmplayer` .. read the warnings if there are any, it may just help you.

Do you have your codecs installed? If the binary of yours built using
libavcodec? libavcodec provides a great decoder / encoder for many
formats, much faster than the win32 codecs.

Just some ideas,
Ralph

[newbie] safari browser

2003-01-13 Per discussione Richard Babcock
I came across this article on the safari browser but don't understand how it
can be touted as fast. I thought KDE and Konqueror were both rather bulky
(by comparison to something like IceWM and Mozilla) in order to appear
Windows like. If safari is based on this code, how can it be 'fast?'
jus wondering

Go into your BIOS settings, and make sure it's set for NON-PNP OS -
then
 try the installation again.

What KIND of CDROM is it that you're installing - and are the jumpers on
the CDROM set properly? (Just asking - just to be sure)

I used expert install on my second harddrive with cdrom as secondary slave and
ide0 disabled. Install was flawless, except I couldn't get kmail to work
(might have been firewall problem if I could find the firewall) sound card is
recognized but can't find the volume control,

the only volume control ap i could see was gnome-volume-control
aumix won't compile actally LOTS of thing won't compile...but it is a 1cd distro
after all

it is very sparse for apps with
only one cd. Oh yeah, I forgot that I had hdc mounted on my main hda and so
when it changed the partitions with the OS install on hdc my hda boot up
install failed on errors on /dev/hdc1, couldn't get a recovery so had to
reinstall and wipe /usr and the /hdc1 and /hdc6 partitions to get hda back.
Dumb mistake. Any hoo, I am not thrilled with the default KDE icons colors
etc and wish I knew why kmail can recieve but not send. Said that senders
address was missing a ? can't remember. Will try again on beta 2. Charge on,

I had the same problem with kmail.

i had problems with the gui when building from source, but when using the plf rpm's
gmplayer worked fine. on 8.2 the only way i could get it to work was by upgrading my
gtk+ to 2.0x (along with atk, pango, and a couple other deps all supplied at gtk.org)
You might try that. Best of luck... mplayer a nice little ap, even without the gui
but that does make it much easier to deal with for windoze expats.
