I had the same problem. You need the kernel header files which I think are on
the installation CD2. Or I think you can use rpmdrake and click on the
development option in the tree view.

It seems it's either one or the other at present whereas I would like them

[newbie] C header files

2003-03-02 Per discussione Andrew Scotchmer
Hi all

Much conventional question this time (sorry about the last one I really didn't
mean to offend or annoy).

Anyway I'm trying to install VMware 3.1 and after installation I get this
message when trying to run:

VMware Workstation Error:
VMware Workstation is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured
for your running kernel. To (re-)configure it, your system administrator
must find and run vmware-config.pl.

After running vmware-config.pl I get this message:

None of VMware Workstation's pre-built vmmon modules is suitable for your
running kernel. Do you want this script to try to build the vmmon module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)?

After choosing yes I receive another message:

Argument gcc (GCC) 3 isn't numeric in numeric ge (=) at
/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl line 1476, STDIN line 1.
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your
running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

Where are these files please they are not in the directory it suggested
[/usr/src/linux/include]. I've tried allsorts but with no luck.

Re: [newbie] Worried

2003-03-02 Per discussione Andrew Scotchmer
Hi all

Can I please state for the record that I am a complete Linux supporter. I
have been with Mandrake since version 6 and although having left the arena,
so to speak, for sometime now I still believe that linux is the best OS
system around and Mandrake the best version.

What my original e-mail was trying to show (and I apologise for not making
this clear) is the average end user perspective. There is much talk here, as
there always has been, of Linux-v-Windows and I was just illustrating, after
my installation of XP, as to what a windows user must think when faced with
Md9 or any other linux version for the first time.

In my opinion too much time and effort is directed towards converting the
windows user to linux and basically I was showing that although linux is by
far the better of the two, XP gives people what they want and damn fast.

Some of you have said that chaning desktops will improve preformance but as I
originally stated I don't want to, again getting my head into a windows users
perspective where KDE or Gnome is the more familiar. Showing some new person
Enlightenment or even ICEwm is not going to impress at all. They want
familiararity, hence my choice of desktop.

I hope this has made my stance clear,

Andrew

[newbie] worried

2003-02-28 Per discussione Andrew Scotchmer
Now don't get me wrong I love linux and have been with Mandrake since v6.0
though I must say in my opinion v9.0 is not one of it's best, perhaps,
sorry, definately a bit hasty with this release!

Anyway the point is I've just upgraded my windows98 to XP and I must admit
in all fairness for the desktop, I know nothing of computers, average
user, XP is better.

Now before I get flamed let me explain. I run a small 500mhz Athlon with
64mg memory but for speed and effeiciency XP is by far the fastest.
My Md9 is a minimal installation (although having most of the HD) but still
pales in comparison to XP even when a large number of apps are working.
With XP I boot and hey-presto I'm logging in with Md9 I can make a brew etc
etc. (well not literally but you get the point)

I beleive that as far as the end user is concerned speed is the most
important factor. Not how much software is free or that linux is more
stable and reliable. The average user wants speed. You click on an icon
and up pops the application IMMEDIATELY!!! With XP even my little 500
acheives this performance but alas (and I mean that with a heavy heart) Md9
is a slow monolith beleiving that placing god knows how many apps into their
installation cd's will convert new customers.

Just my thought

Re: [newbie] Mandrake so slow in a pentium 200

2003-02-26 Per discussione Andrew Scotchmer

. There is no way you can run KDE 3.0 on 32MB of RAM
 - you need 128MB for even tolerable speeds, and 512MB would be necessary
to give full performance. As a comparison, 32MB is barely enough to run
Windows 98, and Mandrake 9.0 is not the equivalent of Win98, it's more
like XP (except that it doesn't give the world access to your computer,
and you don't have to sell your soul to install it).

 Sir Robin

Oh contrare Sir Robin :)
I have installed Md9 along with on a friends cyric 300Mhz 32mbRAM just fine.
A little slow compared to windows but then what can you expect.
Guess what, he also dual boot to Windows98 and that works perfectly.

Maybe these larger chip sizes that companies keep telling us we MUST have
make us forget how useful the older slower ones can still be!

[newbie] Japanese Language Problems

the fact that in windows xp she can input japanese characters in her
applications.

Is there anyway that this can be done in Linux. I can get it to display
Japanese letters in the applications but some still show in english (desktop
icons, application titles and some menu items). I did install the Japanese
character sets and I beleave a program that allows the user to enter
Japanese in KWord but I cann't get it to work proper.

Basically what she would like is when she logs in to her user account it is
for all intents and purposes a Japanese computer.

Hi all,
Whilst helping a friend install mandrake 8.2 we ran into a problem I have
never come up against, maybe some of you have.
On booting from the CD Rom and pressing the enter key, instead of going into
second stage install and loading the main installation dialogue screen the
monitor goes blank and after about 20 seconds both the CD and the hard drive
stop. In other words on pressing enter at the initial welcome screen
everything stops.
Has anyone had a similar experience or any thoughts on what may be the
problem and how to fix it.
His PC spec is: 300Mhz Pentium, 64Mb RAM, two hard drives - a 1Gb original
and an extra 4GB. It is an old machine (about five or six years old) and
the video card is unknown. I was thinking this may be the problem (the
video card) but then why shold the CD and hard drive stop?

Has anyone got sound on their netscape or other browser? I've been

Is there another plugin that can play wav files or can I redirect

It is not WYSIWYG so you'll need to know your html. Also on a downer it is not

This is interesting Andrew. Wonder what you're doing right? When I
stopped using it for email things settled down considerably. I don't know
if that's because of problems with Messenger or just because it was
actually doing something for fewer minutes each day. I no longer keep
Netscape loaded all the time as I'd like. That seems to help. With
all this, Netscape hangs only a couple times a week and I have stopped it
from crashing my system. By contrast, when I was using it for mail it
would die on me several times a day.

Hi Larry

Well for starters I don't use it for e-mail. I prefer Pine or Kmail for that.
As to what I am doing right, I haven't a clue. I'm running an oldish system

[newbie] Linux on Compaq Prosignia P1?

Hi all,

A friend of mine wants to install Linux but is having probs. As I have had no
problems with installation I don't have a clue so maybe someone here can help.

He is trying to load linux onto a Compaq Prosignia P1 with a SCSI CD-ROM with
a smart array controller. He used the 4.60 smartstart CD's to erase the current
setup and prepare his system for Linux for which Linux was a selectable option.

However, whatever he does he cannot seem to boot off the bootable CD. He has
tried Red Hat, SUSE and LM7.1 but they just leave him with a blinking cursor in
the top left hand corner of the monitor and he is forced to reboot.

With Mandrake he gets a little further with Tux being displayed and the options
for auto or manual installation. Both start OK, decompressing the boot
instructions but then a message appears saying: "Boot failed - Please change
disks and start again." Thing is, as he got the distribution from a cover disk
there isn't another to try.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks in advance

[newbie] Telneting

2000-09-28 Per discussione Andrew Scotchmer

Hi

Just a quick question. Does any host allow the telnet function?I live in
the UK and all our servers do not allow users to telnet to them. Infact every
one I try whether here or abroad no longer seems to allow telneting.

I ask as seeing that now I now much about my own system I want to expand my
knowledge but this has become a problem. All the info I read about the
internet ( that is the real internet not just the world wide web ) and how
it works talk of telneting but I can not seem to get anywhere with it.

Grub is a graphical loader, LiLO is the prompt.
However with you mentioning login do you mean after the system has booted?
If this is so (and it is not Grub) then as root edit the /etc/inittab file.
The line you want reads something like:

id:3:initdefault

Simply change the 3 for a 5 and when you reboot (via Grub or LiLo) you will
find the graphical login.

I think you can type linux 5 or something at the LiLo prompt to boot into a
graphical login screen. However it is only for that session and you will
still need to alter the /etc/inittab file once you have booted.

I'm not sure what you want. This only changes the login screen ONCE you have
booted into Linux. LiLo will still remain the same. If it is the LiLo prompt
you want changing then the other suggestions will do this by helping you change
to Grub.

If you are dual booting you can always install boot magic into windows and move
LiLo / Grub to the secondary boot record (it is now in the master boot record.

Boot magic is a totally graphical boot manager that responds to your mouse as
well as your keyboard.

Did you install Lilo on the MBR or secondary boot header?
In saying that how about entering Drak Config and placing the Windows option
on the same partition as Lilo (hda 5 or where-ever) so that it would show when

However my main reason for e-mailing the group is this. How does this new gimp

Obviously I will tell them I use Linuxso no but..etc.

Thats exactly my thoughts Phil.

If Linux became 'Prime-time' and everything was made to run perfectly first

major paradoxes that the Linux distributors, promoters and programmers must
face.

For me Linux has recaptured the days of my youth when, with my ZX81 and later

program from a games magazine or trying to teach myself basic. Then came
Windows and I became a virtual zombie.

Now thanks to Linux, whilst others down tthe local pub are discussing the
finer arts of word processing and how to change their Windows 9x desktop

scripting and trying to teach myself C programing. I'm once again reliving
those distant and hazy days of youth when my world revolved around a spongey
rubber keypad and a 16k RAM pack precariously balanced against a school
textbook.

Linux has provided me with the answer of what can be done on those long cold
wintery nights when all thats keeping me going is a full perculator of coffee
and a sheer willfull desire to have this machine finally configured to my
liking. So what if I'm red eyed and blurry the next day at work at least I can

Would not placing it into /etc/rc.d/rc.local bring up the dial tone before

[newbie] libqt.so.1 prob

2000-07-08 Per discussione Andrew Scotchmer

Hi,

Tried to install 7.0 after stuffing things up in root.
Usually everthing goes like a dream. However this time I can not start X.
I keep getting the error message that reads something like:
libqt.so.1. Can not open shared libraries.
I've never had this before and I have installed it a few times both on my own
computer and on my friends.
Anyone know what the problem is? I've looked through various books but with no
luck.

Thanks in advance

Andrew.

Why the difference and what is their meaning???
My processor is not intel but a Cyric Mll 300.

Can anyone tell me what files, and where they are to setup the
WinTV? I know it is here somewhere, and I have looked everywhere in
the file structure, but to no avail. Where is it, and how to set
up? I am running V7 and KDE. Thanks for your help. So much to
  learn, so little time.

  Gary,
You'll need something like KwinTV that I downloaded from Linuxberg.
You'll also need the drivers for your card. I have hauppauge WinTV
and use the BTTV drivers and you can learn about how to configure
and get it all up an running at the BTTV Howto at www.linuxdoc.org.

[newbie] Probs with Abiword

2000-06-11 Per discussione Andrew Scotchmer

Hi,

Just had a look at Abiword and have come across a problem.
Does anyone else when starting Abiword have half the screen blanked out?
I can only see half the document because of this and the grey area even extends
out of the window and onto the desktop where it stays until I refresh.
It is a shame because I need the word count facility that abiword has and which
I have not been able to find on others.
I have contacted abisource but they have not responded so does anyone here
know of a solution?

Thanks,
Andrew

Roman,
Have a look athttp://goforit.unk.eduThere is a free online course in
Unix there and it recommends using Linux to complete the exercises.
I have found it to be very informative and useful. It covers all areas of
running a Unix system with prompt commands and shell scripting. There is also

[newbie] LILO boot time

2000-05-31 Per discussione Andrew Scotchmer

Hi again,

I have got Linux installed on hda1 after ditching Windoze a couple of months
ago now. When at the lilo prompt I have to wait 5 seconds for it to boot the
kernal or press enter for instant booting.

I know it is petty but how can I configure lilo to boot Linux instantly with
out the prompt. I have looked into /etc/lilo.config and messed about
with the timeout option but it has no effect. Therefore the waiting time
command must be within another file but where?

As I said it is a petty issue but it has become a bit of an obsession with me
now.

[newbie] ~/.profile prodlems

2000-05-30 Per discussione Andrew Scotchmer

Hi

Today I've downloaded qt-2.0.2 as it is needed by the latest version of licq.
To install I have needed to create a file ~/.profile in my home directory
according to the instructions in the INSTALL file (just a case of cut and paste
really).
I have logged out and back in again as instructed to set the new file
but when running ./configure I still get an error saying:

The variable QTDIR is not set correctly. It is currently set to "" but it
should be set to this directory which is "/usr/local/qt".

The problem is that the above mention variable is set to /usr/local/qt.
Do I have to compile this file with gcc or something
Thanks

 Hi,
Well I had this exact problem only a couple of weeks back and thanks to some
usefull suggestions I got it fixed.
Check your Name Server Specifications (DNS) in linux config and make sure
that all the information there is correct ie. server name, ip address, etc. To
be honest i didn't think this had anything to do with it at first and it was
the last thing I tried, but what do you now...it worked!!!

It is a program that allows you to receive and transmit slow scan

 HF (high frequency) radio.
I think I have copied and extracted it (as root) to /usr/local/src/
directory but not sure how to set it up. Couldn't find a setup or
install file so not sure where to proceed from here. Couldn't find any
document files in the extraction to help with the setup either. Don't

help. I am using Mandrake 7.0 Complete install.
 Troy

Hi Troy,

Which site did you download it from and was there no documentation on a page
their? Usually there is some info on configuring the packages to your set up
either on the site our in a file within the package.
Sometimes looking at the unzipped file names can give a hint. Is there a
configure file or a Make file somewhere.
Sorry I can not be more helpful but I'm having one mammoth task trying to
configure the bttv drivers for my wintv card ( I think this is day 4 ).
  Good luck

Nice comments Jim and thats the only way to learn. I beleave that in the

possibly can be.

Though I would like some things to be made easier, most of which have been
mentioned in the Discussion thread, I do feel that to make it too user
friendly would rob Linux of it's unique position and it's marvels. Heck, if it
becomes to user friendly with everything done without a thourght being required
from the user, why don't we just all jack it in and reinstall Windoze

What do you all think out there???

Your problem may not be a "kppp" problem at all. If you can use other

using the site name such as:

 Thanks Altoine,
however I think maybe I did not explain myself fully the first time.
Netscape was only an example. What happens is nothing opens. I click on say
my home directory and nothing happens. I click on the console and nothing
happens. When I go to the menu and choose anything, say a game, nothing
happens, yet using the /sbin/ifup command everything is fine.

It is not only netscape it is the whole desktop that doesn't respond when
connecting with kppp. I've checked my DNS IP configuration and all is fine.

Hi again.

Connected with my last mail I have downloaded the bttv-0.6 driver which can run

Reading all the info after unpacking it I editeda few files as instructed for
my card and did a "make" however I get the reply

/usr/src/linuxRules.make: no such file or directory
No rule to make target /usr/src/linux/Rules.makeStop

It then exists the file and leaves me with the prompt and none the happier.
Anyone know what is going on and what this "/Rules.make" file is?
