Re: [newbie] Mounting USB mass storage devices
Think this is a cross between a hotplug error and a removable source being treated as a harddisk You shouldn't need to run diskdrake each time, hotplug should do it all automatically. Prolem is hotplug doesn't relise anything has changed until the whole device is removed and reinsterted. People with proper USB harddisks / Pen Disks (or whatever) won't have this problem. It's a bit like a disk in a floppy drive bing treated as a harddisk. Your having to change the whole drive to change 1 disk. Re: [newbie] Mounting USB mass storage devices
I have a 6 in 1 card reader (well it has 4 slots init) sda, sdb, sdc and sdd are the devices the extra number on the end is the partition on the disk. Since all card reader use the scsi module they are treated as hard disks. The problem is we can remove the card without removing the whole drive and nothing seems to be set up to deal with this. It's very annoying, and to be honest having to type in options scsi-mod max_scsi_luns=255 into my modules.conf very annoying. Why can't harddrake do this for me? It is a very worrying state of affairs when somehing works better under windows than in linux. Especally in something so simple. I'd be interested to know how apple implemented it as they use some form of BSD underneath the pretty pictures. And it works great on the mac Mike Anne Wilson wrote: On Wednesday 10 Sep 2003 3:50 pm, RichardA wrote: On Tue, 9 Sep 2003 15:12:48 +0100, Anne Wilson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It certainly sounds ok. If this is the state of the art for usb removable storage, in 2003, then Linux is NOT ready for the desktop. I don't know the answer to that Richard. I don't use an sdram cardreader. I guess that part of the problem is the huge range of hardware we use for removable storage, so we don't always find someone else with experience of the problem. Re: [newbie] Request Motherboard and CPU suggestions
Your best bet is going to be a motherboard that uses a via chipset (as apposed to an nvidea one) As these are very well supported under linux. Maybe your best going for a KT400 instead of the newer KT600 as linux is always a little behind in supporting new features. As most motherboard manufacturers stick to the standard chipset from via and don't substitute them for others everything should work out the box. It's only when the manufacturer decides that sticking some cheep network/sound/name_of_device_here chip instead that people have problems in linux. Also people can have trouble with Nvideas stuff as they require drivers which aren't GPLd (IFAIK) which means if you try and change your kernel without setting up your drivers again linux won't boot up :( I think that was everything. In short buy a very popular board that uses a via chipset as more linux people will use them and write drivers for them. ;) Mike [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: 09/07/03 Hello All, The first time I installed MDK 9.1, it was in a dual-boot with Win95B and I put the files on the slave drive. For Intel cpu's, you're on your own. IMO, there hasn't been a decent chipset for Intel processors since the good ol' 440BX. Type in lilo (as root) so it updates your lilo stuff so at boot up you can select you new kernel. I've tried both the 2.6 kernel and the tmb kernel. I found aproximative figures .. do you by any chance know an exact date when the final 9.2 will come out? which should be out today and then use urpmi to install the test kernel or dl the kernel.src.rpm and rebuild it for your current system. This would be a browser feature. Maybe bring up the cached version then check periodically for a newer version on both the proxy and via Direct Conection if it finds something new trigger a refresh perhaps? This could probably be done in mozilla/firebird as an addin (like the spellchecker and popup suppressor are) I however have no experience in this so get someone who has a clue to make it for ya Mike ;-) I think he's asking for a program that will throw the cached version of the website up on the screen immediately while in the background the caching program checks to see if the page is current. If it finds that the cached version is out of date it downloads the new page and automatically makes the browser refresh the page. If the page is current-- you're set. If not-- you get the auto-refresh. Not a bad idea if you don't mind running the risk of looking at stale data for a second or two. Ok if you were to get ADSL ou wouldn't get a modem each. You would get one modem (for as little as £30) for the computer that is most likely to be on for most of the time You buy 1 network card for each computer (as cheep as £10 each) making sure it works in Linux first And a cheap hub. Use the internet conection sharing wizard to tel linux yiu want to share the conection Then everyone in your house can share the ADSL conection. You can get ADSL for less than £20 per month. This is the setup I'm using here I got a Network Startup Kit for £30 which was a hub and 2 network cards. I assure it is worth it and makes life a lot easier (it also works with windows if anyone's actually silly enough to use it) I'm also sure if you search arround on ebay.co.uk you;ll find an even cheeper solution. Well I'm with freeserve and no problems here Mozilla wouldn't touch your dial up any security would go over tcp/ip and would have nothing do with the physical conection Aslo when your on the phone do you get a lot of static or noise? Also does that mean you live outside an ADSL exchange? Mike John Richard Smith wrote: Personally , I think it's mostly due to a lack of equipement to cater for demand by my ISP, , Freeserve anytime, but I have to be aware of the possibilities of problems with my end. First they blamed it on BT, said the line was faulty, so then I get BT to carry out line tests, they report a good line , no problems. Then when I report that to Freeserve they say, it's due to my modem, which in fairness was very hot due to the weather, but I still have doubts about that accusation, for one thing the fall in the quality of service predates the heatwave, plus I've now rigged a temporary 8cm case fan straight onto the chips and they are now cool enough, and still no improvement. Then it occures to me that it might be something to do with my ISP rejecting my connection due to some sort of security increase due to me installing Mozilla1.4 with all it's increase security packages.I'm not really confident about it, but I have to explore the possibility , that is all. I'm affraid there are no cheap broadband packages available to me. I shall have to put up with dialup. I can switch to another ISP, and may well do so, but I want to be sure first that it is my ISP lack of equipement to service the demand that really is the problem. Hmm Royal Observatory Edinburgh? Do you know George Sherrifs undergrad or Meric who works there? Mike CVS - The VS stands for versioning system I think - the C might be coordinated or cooperative. It is something we used up at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh for software development projects under UNIX. Never really got the hang of it. It is supposed to provide a standardized way for members of a group to maintain, synchronize, and backup their efforts. The system may hold several snapshots of the programmers' work, including documentation, with all the roots and branches, making it possible to recover a complete version at any stage or even summarize the history of the project.
